Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule Commencing in October

Between the months of October and May, the City puts in place an alternating schedule that includes meter reading for half of the City. The alternating schedule is in place during these months due to extra time required to complete city-wide, month to month meter reads. Changes to seasonal staffing, colder temperatures, inclement weather, higher priority maintenance issues in cooler seasons, are all contributing factors in encouraging residents to provide their own meter reading.

Why Should you provide your own meter reading?

• Your water bill will be based on actual consumption preventing you from being over billed or under billed • Days of usage may be higher when an estimate is used resulting in higher billing. A water meter read will ensure accuracy.

• Estimates are based on prior usage, including summer months where water usage is typically higher. Actual water use in winter months will likely be lower resulting in a lower actual bill.

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are a number of things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach. Allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean up fallen fruit • Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours.

TRAFFIC Single Vehicle Rollover Results In Woman Taken to Hospital

October 10, 2018 at 3:15 a.m. Police received a complaint of a single vehicle accident on Range Road 3041 in the RM of Corman Park. The caller advised that a family member had called to report they had an accident but didn’t know their location.

Police located the 21 year old female driver.

She was transported to hospital for treatment of her injuries. The vehicle required towing from the scene.

Vehicle Travelling Southbound in Northbound Lane on Hwy 12

October 14, 2018 at 12:25 a.m. Police received a complaint of a vehicle travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller was unable to provide a plate number or description of the vehicle. No further calls were received regarding the vehicle.

PROPERTY Theft of Vehicle Reported in Martensville

October 9, 2018 at 10:20 a.m. Police received a complaint of theft from a vehicle on the 500 block of Klassen crescent in Martensville. The caller reported that someone entered their vehicle through an open window and stole some electronic

devices. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

B&E at Residence Under Construction in Martensville

October 13, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Police received a complaint of a break, enter and theft from a residence under construction in Martensville.

Nothing was taken. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Section 35(3) of the Traffic Safety Act refers: possess driver’s licence not signed in such a manner that the signature cannot be erased. The fine for this infraction is mandatory court appearance.

The MHS girl’s soccer team coached by Breanne Cooper, traveled to Prince Albert for a tournament this past weekend. Sarah Neinaber (intern) and Hannah Brossart are helping Cooper with the coaching duties.

The girls lost to Prince Albert St. Mary’s 0-2 in their first game but came back to defeat Se se wa hum 3-1 in their second game. Ciarra Thiessen scored the hat trick for her team. The girls won the consolation final Saturday against Yorkton Sacred Heart in an exciting round of shoot outs. Emily Mann, Emma Winrow and Desirae Letvinchuk scored during the shoot outs. Net minder, Jodi Bouvier, made some impressive saves. Other teams in the tournament were PA Carlton, Holy Rosary, Holy Cross, and Meadow Lake. The team is gearing up for regional playdowns next Saturday in Humboldt. Warman, Meadow Lake and Humboldt are part of their regional playoff teams.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Well it was another wild week in the CFL and not a great one for my predictions but I’ll get to that later. The week started off good for me with a strong performance from Hamilton QB Jerimiah Masoli who threw four touchdowns and 338 yards against the Toronto Argonauts. The 34-20 win for the Ti-Cats put them in a tie for first place in the East.

Saturday was a triple-header in the CFL and it started off with an absolute thrashing of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Matt Nichols and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers came out flying and put up 31 points in the first half. That is all they would need as the Bombers defense kept the Riders scoreless for the rest of the game for an embarrassing 31-0 loss. The loss erased the small chance of the Riders taking first in the West and boosted the Bombers chance of staying in the West for playoffs. From this point on my predictions were spoiled. The Ottawa RedBlacks were up 16-14 at the half but the Edmonton Eskimos shut them out and put up 20 points in the second half to take a 3416 victory. The win for the Eskies kept them in the hunt for a playoff spot while the RedBlacks’ loss kept them in a tie for first in the East.

The final game of the triple-header on Saturday saw the BC Lions almost blow a 20-4 lead with 2:18 left in the first half. The Stampeders scored two touchdowns in 55 seconds but missed a 2-point conversion that made the score 20-18 at the half. Calgary couldn’t manage much after that, scoring just one field goal compared to the Lions two. Calgary suffered just their third loss of the season and fell to 12-3 on the season.

The playoff picture is starting to take form now as the Stamps need just one win to clinch first in the West, Saskatchewan needs either a win or a BC Lions loss to clinch a home playoff game. After that things get a little blurry with the East in a deadlock and BC and Edmonton just two points behind Winnipeg. It may just come down to the final games to decide who plays who. As for my picks, my record moves to 46-23 after a 2-2 week. This week’s picks are Hamilton, BC, Calgary, and Toronto.

It was “Friday Night Lights” at Wilson Field as our MHS Royals hosted the Rosetown Royals at their annual night game on Friday. The MHS Royals were coming into this game with a 3-1 record winning their last two games. They kept their streak going defeating Rosetown 37-14. The stands were full as diehard fans came out to cheer on their hometown Royals despite the rainy and snowy conditions. MHS came out strong and brought the fans into the game early on the first play of the game when Kody Gutek returned the first kick-off for a touchdown. The Royals kept the lead for the rest of the game. Spencer McLeod found the endzone for the Royals second major making it 14-0 in the first. The MHS Royals weren’t done yet in the first quarter as QB Tynan Guenther connected with Kyler Fraser to make it 21-0 going into the second quarter. Kody Gutek would take the handoff and score his second touchdown in the second giving the Royals the 28-0 lead. Ian Frattinger would add to the score with a 34 yard field goal.

Coach Evanisky played his bench in the second half as back-up QB Aiden Kliewor took over at the helm. Late in the fourth Josh Dyck took a handoff and ran the length of the field for the touchdown giving the Royals the 37-0 lead. “I was a bit concerned about the weather for our passing game”, commented coach Evanisky, “ but our O-line did a really good job this game and made it possible for us to run the ball”. The Royals had played them two weeks ago so they had a good idea of what they needed to do to win. “I’m just glad that we had such a strong first half. It was good to get up and be able to get more players the experience of playing under the lights at home”.

There were some key tackles from Dmytro Kramesh and Isaac Dagenais on the defense that kept the Rosetown Business & quarterback, Daniel Wiebe, scrambling. He connected with Professional Mark Hill who scored their first major in the fourth. MFD Hosts Annual Open House

The Martensville Fire Department hosted their annual open house on October 10th in honour of Fire Prevention Week. Each year, the group opens up the doors to the fire hall and invites local families in for a tour of the hall, a chance to take a closer look at the trucks, educational demonstrations and delicious burgers and hot dogs. This year, those attending had the chance to see demonstrations on how to properly use a fire extinguisher, and had the chance to see how an airbag in a vehicle works. This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week was Look, Listen, Learn; meant to help people prepare their homes in case of a fire. Look for possible hazards within your home where fires could start, Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm and ensure they are working properly and Learn two ways out of each room that are easy to access and free of clutter. Sask Government Must Be Vigilant to Protect Existing Jobs

No government should ever be condemned for focusing on jobs. Jobs represent the wellbeing of their constituents, which should be the foremost concern of a local elected official, but jobs are also something that falls within the jurisdiction of local politicians and sticking to what is in your purview is an important and often overlooked aspect of governance.

If you think about it, this is why global warming initiatives are failing. By definition, global warming is a “global issue”, not an issue for local or provincial or even federal politicians to handle. Maybe this is precisely why we are struggling mightily to get a handle on the matter.

So it isn’t surprising that the Saskatchewan Party government is prioritizing good-paying jobs in its fight against the federal carbon tax. Of course, there is also the Sask. Party argument that the federal government’s carbon tax isn’t actually an effective way of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, anyway.

We remain a resource-based economy where the burning of fossil fuel, be it for farming, mining, manufacturing or the oil sector, is a necessity. Pricing carbon might not change our way of life, but it will surely make it more expensive, something that the federal government doesn’t seem to get.

Irritating to many in this sparsely populated, rural, agrarian part of the country, is the fact it’s not simply a case of using more public transportation to reduce our fossil fuel consumption. We still need fuel for the very machinery that drives our economy and a big part of that economy is fossil fuel itself.

Finally, our source of electricity is mostly fueled by coal. Sure, there have been efforts to move away from coal, which is a good thing. One such initiative towards less GHG emission output is SaskPower’s 350-megawatt natural gas Chinook Power Station near Swift Current.

Such initiatives even demonstrate how there may be a few other jobs to found in the economy other than the traditional work in this province, but all this takes us back to the job question … and perhaps the need for the Sask.

Party government to take a look at job issues from a more fulsome perspective.

Let’s accept that the carbon tax fight is about preserving jobs (with, of course, a little politics thrown in, as was evident in the recent visit by Ontario Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford) and let’s also accept this is an important fight, as the monthly job statistics for the province seem to indicate.

The latest Saskatchewan job statistics for September show a slight increase by 3,300 more people working from September 2017. However, that good news was tempered by a rise in unemployment as well, the notion that Alberta seems to recovering more quickly and that the economists for RBC are describing Saskatchewan’s job recovering as “surprisingly weak.”

Given this situation, the Sask. Party government is obligated to do what it can to ensure good-paying jobs are available to workers in this province, but consider this in the context of NDP Opposition concerns that most of the 640 construction workers at the Swift Current Chinook work site seem to be from out of province.

“The procurement process is not working as it should," said NDP Leader Ryan Meili. One gets that interprovincial trade agreements like the New West Partnership makes it more difficult for provinces to place restrictions on out-of-province contractors. Remember: A year ago this Sask. Party was eager to tax out-of-province license plates at Saskatchewan job sites in retaliation to unproven allegations that the Alberta government was engaging in similar favoritism. Shouldn’t the Saskatchewan government be as vigilant about protecting existing jobs as it is about losing future jobs to a carbon tax? After all, that’s what provincial politicians are supposed to do.

We would like to thank everyone that supported our family at the #TeamDunville fundraiser.

It was overwhelming to look out at the crowd and see so many people in the hall who gathered together to show us their support. Although Martensvillle has grown to become a city, it sure felt like a small, tight knit community that night. We could feel the love from everyone and our family enjoyed an evening of entertainment and fun, which we desperately needed. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this a success. Thanks to the organizers: Breanne Cooper, Della Muench, Nadine Stewart, Jodi Snell, and Janice Gerhardt, along with all of the MHS staff and students who helped out. Thanks to Smokehaus, A&W, and Vern’s pizza for donating food. Thank you to the Ginger Ninja for putting on the most jaw dropping show and to Sprinkles the Clown and Paige and Brianna Stewart for keeping all the kiddos entertained and face painted!

We will be on our way to Calgary in the next couple of weeks for the next step in Molly’s treatment, a stem cell transplant. The Alberta Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald house will be our home for the next few months. We hope that Molly recovers quickly and smoothly without any setbacks. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

Not only have the students put work into their performances, they have also gained numerous new skills through this opportunity; whether it be teaching others how to dance, learning to work with lighting and sound equipment, how to stitch repairs on their costumes, and many others. Kate Jalbert and Kaelyn Coulthard worked with their fellow cast members on the choreography. Both, who had never taught dance before, were pleased with the progress that was made, and feel proud of the end result. “We really wanted to focus on repetition, because not everyone is a dancer, so our goal was to ensure that everyone felt comfortable before we moved on because we didn’t want to have someone feel unsure of themselves on stage,” Coulthard said. For other students, this experience was one that they were nervous about taking on; however, now that they have, the sense of confidence that this experience has created, leave little room for nerves. “I wasn’t quite sure about joining, but after thinking about it, I decided to jump in with both feet, so I did and I have loved it,” Chelsea Sander stated. “This is my first year participating because other years I was too nervous. Now, being here, it has been a lot of fun and I have made a lot of new friends. It has been such a great experience,” Adrian Skelton added.

As opening night nears closer, some students are already feeling a sense of sadness knowing that the musical will soon have come and gone. Anaya Elias noted that, “I am really excited to perform for everyone, but at the same time, I am sad that it is almost over. At least we can begin to look forward to next year!” Not all students have the option of performing in the high school musical again next year, as Winsorbless Lumapas, who plays Princess Winnifred knows firsthand. Having been in choir since grade 9, there is a sense of sadness knowing that this will be her last performance before graduating this school year. “Throughout the four years that I have been in choir, it has helped me gain more and more confidence every time. I am so proud to be a part of this, and I am really grateful for the experience. We all support one another and accept each other for who we are,” Lumapas explained.

“Once Upon a Mattress” will take place November 2nd and 3rd at 7pm in the Martensville High School Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6.00 for students and can be purchased in the high school office. “Working with the students has been wonderful and they have put so much time and effort into their performances. We know that it is going to be a great show full of energy,” MHS Teacher Mike Kaweski said.

PSSD Invites Community to Attend “Growing Together” Conference Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

On October 20th, Prairie Spirit School Division will be hosting a conference at Martensville High School to encourage engagement between the schools, parents, students and school community councils. “Growing Together” is about building partnerships within the Prairie Spirit Learning communities. “The focus of this conference is about building relationships and to provide an opportunity for School Community Councils, parents, school staffs and communities to connect with one another and build relationships. Prairie Spirit School Division is a large school division with great distances between schools. This is an opportunity to get together, get to know one another, talk, share, ask questions and build a much larger community,” Peggy Mattila-Bains, PSSD Coordinator, explained.

This event is open to all that wish to attend and will feature several key-note speakers and provide an opportunity to work together towards the greater good of the students. Speakers include Corey O’Soup, Saskatchewan’s advocate for Children and Youth and Dr. Debbie Pushor, a University of Saskatchewan Professor in the Department of Curriculum Studies who is also an author on parent engagement. “40 years of research tells us that family engagement is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s success. We want our parents to be engaged partners in student learning,” Mattila-Bains added.

Numerous sessions and interactive panels will also be available such as; early learning; mental health, emotional wellness and traumas; SCC’s, communities and schools engaging and working together; navigating social media with children and teens; transition planning for students with special needs; high school credit and career opportunities in trades; hands on coding and robotics; parenting through adolescence; and much more.

“The sessions at the conference offer something to everyone. The majority of our session leaders and presenters are from Prairie Spirit School Division: teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, facilitators, parents and students.”
