Jimmy’s Cannabis Shop Aiming For October 17th Opening Date Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Jimmy’s Cannabis Shop is working hard to have everything prepared for the October 17th legalization of recreational cannabis. John and David Thomas, brothers from Regina, were awarded four permits to open recreational cannabis locations within the province with locations in Estevan, Moosomin, Battleford and Martensville. Each location will be run by a General Manager, while the two brothers head the operations from Regina. With the legalization date only a week away, the timeframe is a tight one to work within, and if unable to open specifically for the 17th, they will open as close to that date as possible. “Some things are out of our control at this point, and as much as we want to make sure we are open that day, you never know what is going to happen.

If we are unable to be open, it will be based on something that is completely out of our hands,” Martensville Jimmy’s Cannabis Shop General Manager, Julie Vickaryous, explained.

The Saskatchewan based company is working hard to keep their home-province roots and wants to ensure that their locations are somewhere that customers can feel comfortable walking into. The design and layout of the store will be made to be bright and modern, with its own unique appearance. “There is this misconception when it comes to how dispensaries look, but we have found a nice, comfortable, very Saskatchewan feel to our location.”

With the staff consisting of numerous Martensville residents, Vickaryous is looking forward to being able to provide top-notch customer service and education to local residents. “The staff we have is super knowledgeable and very welcoming. That was a priority for us as we want everyone to leave here feeling as though they have everything they need; whether it be education or product,” Vickaryous said.

Customers will have the option to walk in and make purchases, or they are welcome to speak with a staff member in the sitting area over a cup of coffee. With a wide variety of customers expected, from those that consider themselves experienced, or for those that require more information, Vickaryous knows that each staff member will be able to provide the perfect service.

Vickaryous comes with a large amount of knowledge and experience, as she has worked within the medical cannabis industry for numerous years. Prior to the cannabis industry, Vickaryous was professionally trained at a French baking school in Vancouver; however upon being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 20, Vickaryous returned to her home province and following her treatment, decided to enter into the medical cannabis industry. “During my treatment, I took my skills as a chef and integrated cannabis with them. I then did teaching to other cancer patients, and it grew organically from there,” stated Vickaryous. This experience took her across Canada for various teaching opportunities and conferences; however, growing up in an entrepreneurial family in Saskatchewan had Vickaryous yearning for something different. “I had this desire to stick to my roots and stay in my home province. I wanted to stay here because I wanted to make cannabis in Saskatchewan important and integral to our communities, so when the opportunity came up with Jimmy’s, I jumped at it. I know when I wake up in the morning, I am going to work my hardest because at the end of the day, my work is going back into the community and going back to families, so that is what drives me.”

Community is a top priority for the business, as they take much pride in being a Saskatchewan company.

During the interview process, an important question for Vickaryous was asking potential employees how they are involved in the community and if they would be open to being more involved. “I think that is the mark of a good small business; someone who works cohesively with their community,” added Vickaryous. “Being communityminded is so important to us. We want our staff, even outside of work, to feel as though it is their duty to know what they can about everything cannabis related because we are the people that are going to help you through everything and make sure you have a good time and that you are comfortable doing it.”

Once open, Jimmy’s will offer a variety of accessories, cannabis and apparel, and take pride in offering Canadian made items. Although edibles and concentrates will not be legalized until next year, Vickaryous explained that it doesn’t mean that customers don’t have the option to learn to make these items themselves. “If people are interested in making their own, it is absolutely doable. We can help point you in the right direction. It is a learning process, but it is not difficult by any means. If you can bake or cook, then you can do it.

All of the staff will be very well versed in how to help you and ensure you have as great of a time as possible.”

Safety will also be a main priority for everyone at Jimmy’s Cannabis Shop. All customers that enter the store will be required to show ID, and anyone that appears impaired will be asked to leave the premises. The business will meet all SLGA training, health and safety, as well as security rquirements.

Canada has been a worldwide trailblazer when it comes to making recreational cannabis legal throughout the country and Vickaryous is excited to be a part of it.

“My mom said this is a chance to be a part of history and I think that is very poignant. I told my staff when we first met that this is very important and what we do impacts how this is going to run and how people will perceive this forever. It is an incredible opportunity to be a part of that.”

Council Discusses Drug & Alcohol Policy at October Committee of the Whole Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville October Committee of the Whole meeting was held this past Tuesday, with numerous topics on the agenda. Firstly, members of the RCMP presented a list of up to date statistics for the year to Council. Compared with a report from last year, covering a period from January to October, 2018 numbers are down in the majority of areas. Provincial Traffic Offences went from 757 in 2017 to 457 in 2018, Harassment/Threats dropped from 29 actual offences to 18, Assaults went to 26 from 2017’s total of 53, Property – Theft Under $5,000 is currently at 60 for 2018 compared to 77 in 2017 among others. In total, total calls for service in 2017 were 2089 reported and 2018 actual, while 2018 totals are sitting at 1519 reported with 1455 actual.

City Clerk Carla Budnick then spoke to Council about the upcoming cannabis legalization on October 17th, and the Proposed Drug & Alcohol Policy for the City of Martensville. The previous Alcohol Policy was drafted in 2006, and amended in 2013; however has now required updating to include both alcohol and drug (illegal or legal) use. Since the legalization date announcement several months ago, the City of Martensville has been communicating with other municipalities and reviewed several policies. Budnick noted in her report that, “The City feels they have developed a policy that will ensure the safety and well-being of all employees and general public.” Plans for each department to meet and review the new policy will be set, and each employee will be given their own copy and asked to sign an Employee Consent Form which will be filed in their personnel file. Budnick proposed that a motion be brought forth for formal approval of the Drug & Alcohol Policy report.

The next item on the agenda was a request from the Saskatchewan Health Authority Immunization Department to waive the rental fees at North Ridge Community Centre for a public influenza clinic, which will be held November 1st. Director of Recreation and Community Services, Ted Schaeffer, recommended that Council agree to waive the fees as the initiative would have a positive impact on the health of the community. Council was in favour of this decision and will bring a motion next week for formal approval.

The City of Martensville received an application with a request to allow the development of a two unit dwelling at 775 1st Avenue North. Planner Kevin Ingram advised that his recommendation would be to allow the development of the structure on the condition that the property owner obtain a building permit for the second unit within the principal building.

Bonnie Gorelitza, City of Martensville Planning Manager then spoke to Council regarding the South East Sector Plan Scope Change Requests. Within the Request for Direction, Gorelitza noted that there were two requests for budget changes. First, on the Environmental Presentation which includes wetlands that can provide an opportunity to enhance water discharge from the area, while providing amenity spaces for the community, and wildlife protection. Gorelitza stated that more information is needed to better understand the importance of the wetlands within this Sector Plan. Plans to provide a professional Wetland Scientist and Ecologist to present to stakeholders at an upcoming meeting is in place. Additionally, a Transportation Engineer attended the last workshop and has provided additional resources as necessary to the SE Sector Plan project. This was in addition to the original budget. The remaining budget to complete the Traffic Impact Assessment will not be sufficient without a request for budget adjustment.

Council has requested more information on this.

Community Economic Development Manager Dillon Shewchuk spoke to Council on various items highlighting an update from his department. Shewchuk noted several topics including that work continues on the Seniors project. Shewchuk has been working with New Horizons Senior Centre to establish a date in order to provide a project update, which community members would be invited to. Shewchuk has also been meeting and working with numerous local businesses regarding expansion.

With plans in place to host a Martensville Business Expo on April 5-6, 2019, Shewchuk has met with the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce to discuss layout and ensuring that both attendees and exhibitors can benefit from the event.

Martensville City Council will meet for one final meeting this month on Tuesday, October 16th. Members of the public are invited to attend meetings, and can find the agenda for each meeting at www.martensville.ca.

Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule Commencing in October

Between the months of October and May, the City puts in place an alternating schedule that includes meter reading for half of the City. The alternating schedule is in place during these months due to extra time required to complete city-wide, month to month meter reads. Changes to seasonal staffing, colder temperatures, inclement weather, higher priority maintenance issues in cooler seasons, are all contributing factors in encouraging residents to provide their own meter reading.

Construction Continues on Centennial Drive North Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville residents may have noticed some construction taking place along Centennial Drive North. Contractors are currently working on the area between 3rd Street North and 9th Street North. The work they are doing will include adding a longer turning lane for southbound traffic at 3rd Street North, as well as roadway realignment.

This section of road will also be getting a new asphalt overlay, with patching and repair work carried out on areas where required.

With numerous businesses located along this roadway, the City of Martensville has been working with the contractors to ensure that minimal disruption takes place while this work is being completed. “Throughout the paving process, access to businesses will be maintained using detours. Some of these detours may involve routing traffic through adjacent driveways for businesses with adjoining parking lots,” the City of Martensville stated in a notice.

Plans to have the construction completed by October 15th have been set; however the majority of the paving work will be carried out before that time. “Due to the nature of the work, the schedule will remain weather dependent. It is the desire of the City and the contractor to have the work completed as soon as possible,” the notice added.

Motorists are reminded to pay attention to detours and construction zones throughout this time and watch as these detours and construction areas will be limited in size and will be moving frequently to ensure that access can be maintained to area businesses.

Police Respond To Multiple Erratic Driving Complaints October 1, 2018 at 5:15 p.m. Police received a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller advised that the vehicle was swerving all over the road and nearly caused an accident. Police attended the scene and issued a ticket to the 30 year old female driver from Hague for driving without due care and attention. There were no injuries.

October 3, 2018 at 9:00 p.m. Police received a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller advised that they were cut off on the highway by the vehicle. Police did patrols but were unable to locate any vehicles matching the description provided.

Female Found Behind Wheel Given Impaired Charges October 2, 2018 at 8:40 a.m. Police were conducting patrols when they checked a vehicle that was parked on the side of the road with a female behind the wheel. They spoke with the female who appeared to be intoxicated. The 44 year old female was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. She was released a short time later for an upcoming court date on Impaired care and control charges. There were no injuries.

Motorist in Roll Over Charged With Impaired Driving October 6, 2018 at 7:15 p.m. Police received a complaint of a single vehicle rollover on 3rd Street North in Martensville. Police

attended the scene along with EMS from Saskatoon. The 44 year old female driver of the vehicle from Warman appeared to have consumed alcohol. She was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. She was released a short time later on impaired driving charges. There were no injuries.

Police Issue Ticket to Shop Lifter October 2, 2018 at 7:25 p.m. Police received a complaint of shop lifting from a business in Martensville. Police attended the business and arrested a 38 year old female from Saskatoon and served her with documents to appear in court on theft charges. There were no injuries.

Police Charge Intoxicated Duo October 7, 2018 at 4:50 a.m. Police received a complaint of two intoxicated people outside a residence in Martensville. The caller advised that two people were outside of a vehicle yelling and honking the horn on the vehicle. Police attended the scene and arrested a 30 year old male and a 30 year old female from Saskatoon and charged them with being intoxicated in public.

Celebrate Small Business Week - October 14 to 20 Despite Challenges City of Martensville Experiences Economic Growth in Recent Years Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

For Small Business Week, the City of Martensville is working in partnership with Square One, a company that works with assisting entrepreneurs learn the required steps in starting or expanding a business in Saskatchewan. This event will take place on October 15th from 3pm-4pm at the Canalta Hotel and will invite business representatives to come learn about the opportunities, trends and demographics for the City of Martensville. There will also be a presentation by Meagan Barabash of Bravo Dance Company, who will discuss her experiences of owning a business within Martensville. “The idea of this presentation will be to increase awareness about the smaller centres outside of Saskatoon and what the benefits are of looking at these communities for business versus Saskatoon. We think that having Meagan come in to speak will be very beneficial to potential business owners, as people can get a lot of value from listening to someone who has been through it before and has seen success very quickly,” Dillon Shewchuk, City of Martensville Community Economic Development Manager (CEDM), explained. In his position as CEDM, Shewchuk has experienced firsthand just how important businesses are to the community. “Just broadly speaking, they help improve the quality of life here for our residents. There are many advantages to supporting local businesses and by ensuring that these businesses succeed helps to ensure the success of the entire community. These local businesses are the ones that contribute back to the people of Martensville by supporting the local sports groups and community groups, by providing scholarships for local graduates, providing job opportunities, paying taxes and much more. “Our business community has played a big role in helping to shape the future of the community. I am certainly grateful that we have been able to see growth and more people involved in business within Martensville. Looking back several years, there were many people that thought a business community couldn’t succeed in a community like ours, but we are starting to evolve and change and we are starting to have a very thriving and diverse business community,” Shewchuk explained.

With Martensville’s close proximity to Saskatoon, creating that thriving business community has not always been an easy task, as businesses situated in Martensville are often forced to compete with larger, more established businesses in Saskatoon.

Through research, Shewchuk noted that approximately two thirds of the people that moved to Martensville came from Saskatoon, where they had already settled into consumer patterns and routines. In previous years, the City of Martensville created surveys and asked residents what they would like to see in their local business community and if these options were provided, would they choose to instead shop within Martensville, or would they continue to purchase their goods and services in Saskatoon. “It is an obstacle to ask people to abandon some of their typical patterns and we aren’t quite at a stage where you can get every single thing here in Martensville. Saskatoon has numerous options to offer; however, things have improved here. People can now purchase their basic needs within the community and by doing this, it has made Martensville a better place to live,” explained Shewchuk. By providing more business options, it has not only increased convenience for local residents, but also for a market outside of Martensville. Motorists travelling on Highway 12 now have the option to stop in Martensville to purchase items that they may require, or utilize the local services available.

Local businesses also contribute to commercial taxes, which in turn, help the community to purchase additional items such as recreation and cultural amenities. Celebrate Small Business Week - October 14 to 20 Prairie Sky Chamber Focuses on ‘Think Local’ Campaign

With Small Business Week taking place from October 14-19, the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) wants to use this time to focus on the importance of local businesses to Martensville, Warman and surrounding communities. “We are engaging with local business owners in the region to establish a shop local program that is tailored to our specific needs here. We are gathering input from business owners on what challenges there are, how we can educate the public on the importance of shopping local, and also educate businesses on how they can be the best they can be and serve our community the best they can.

The goal is to meet the needs of the people in our region,” PSCC Executive Director Jaimie Malmgren explained.

Recently, the PSCC established a committee whose goal is to work towards implementing a ‘Think Local’ mindset within the region. Though the group has only met once thus far, through the initial meeting, Malmgren stated that they were able to create a conversation with local business owners about where to begin. One topic discussed was reciprocity, and ensuring that the business community supports one another. “That was a very strong message that was delivered across the board and I think that this could potentially be a part of our shop local program. Having businesses collaborate together and support one another is huge for a community.” Another discussion that took place revolved around working to remind local residents to be more aware of the business community within the region and the options that are available to them. With plans to conduct a survey in the future, the goal is to receive feedback from the consumers themselves on what items they are buying outside of the region that local businesses may be able to provide. “That is one of the main things that I am trying to get out to the local businesses. For people to come and invest in the region by setting up a business is fantastic; but it is their responsibility to do the due diligence to ensure that what they are offering is relevant to the area.”

Business owners are encouraged to get involved with the “Think Local” group, and if unable to attend meetings, Malmgren suggested that they make arrangements with the Chamber to have a one-on-one conversation. PSCC hosts numerous events throughout the year that provide an opportunity for businesses to network within one another. “We are hosting our AGM in November and have decided to do a Chamber Member meet and greet that night, so it is a casual opportunity for business owners to get to know each other. It makes sense with the amalgamation. Although Martensville and Warman are very close, there are still many of us that don’t know one another, so we want to provide these opportunities for the business community,” Malmgren said. Additionally, the PSCC is involved with numerous opportunities for businesses to increase their visibility in the region such as; Warman’s Open For Business Exhibition (WOBE), which will be held October 12th and 13th at the Legends Centre in Warman; the Martensville Business Expo, which will be held April 5th and 6th at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion,

By supporting local businesses, you are supporting your community and as Malmgren explained, “When you spend money locally, it gets passed along and spent three to four times within your community. I often compare the region to a body and the money that is spent is the blood.

When money is spent outside of the region, that’s a bleed and that impacts the health of your business region and your community, so it is really important to be mindful of your spending.” One or two items can make a large difference to a local business and by shifting spending habits by 5 to 10 percent; there can be a big impact on the overall health of the local business region.

The PSCC will be hosting their bi-annual complimentary breakfast on Wednesday, October 17th at Twinses Café & Catering in Warman from 7:30am-9:00am.

This is an event that is done in partnership between the Chamber, the City of Warman and Great Plains College.

Celebrate Small Business Week - October 14 to 20 Spotters Booth Added To Wilson Field Through Contributions Of Local Businesses And Individuals Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Wilson Field has a new addition for the 2018 season through the help of numerous volunteers and contributors. A new spotters booth, which will be used to house a concession, storage and provide space for the game announcers, has been constructed, proudly donning blue siding to match the Martensville Royals football team colours.

Construction on the project began this past September and was announced as complete on October 2nd, giving the home team a chance to utilize the addition for their game against Meadow Lake on Friday, October 5th. “We all donated our time and wanted to ensure we had it competed before the snow came,” Steve Smith of Martensville Building & Home Supply said.

With a total cost of approximately $36,000, the project was competed thanks to an idea from Lyle Wilson of Venture Construction, whom the field is named after. Wilson approached Martensville Building & Home Supply and supplied a photo of his plan, suggesting that they work together to make this a reality.

Through the contributions of all involved, a plan was put in place to create the building so the team could utilize storage space and a concession on the lower level, with the spotters booth on the top level. Once approved by Prairie Spirit School Division, work began on the structure, which does not include plumbing or electricity; however, through the use of a generator, can be powered.

The Martensville Royals football team would like to extend their thank you to all involved in the project and for the continued support of Lyle Wilson, Martensville Building & Home Supply, and all other local businesses and individuals that contribute to the success of their football program.

We have a trade deal and here in Saskatchewan that is a very big deal. Our livelihoods depend on trade and that especially applies to trade with the United States, which is why the 11th hour United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement to replace the old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was so critical.

In 2017, 55 per of all Saskatchewan exports went to the United States - $15.6 billion out of $28.5 billion.

However, you may be surprised to know that 85 per cent of Saskatchewan imports in 2017 ($9.8 billion out of $11.5 billion) came from the U.S.A. You get the picture.

Trade is one of those issues so critical to us all that politics needs to put aside in its discussions … although that certainly didn’t happen in either the lead up or aftermath of the recent USMCA deal.

Both the federal Conservatives and NDP felt it necessary to chastise Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government for the deal it negotiated - a deal that surely seemed a near impossible one, given the outrageous demands from U.S. Donald Trump’s administration like forcing Canada to end supply management in Canada and eliminating dispute settlement mechanisms like NAFTA’s chapter 19.

In fairness, those of you with long memories will recall that the original Canada-U.S. free trade deal 30 years ago came with adamant Liberal and NDP opposition to Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney’s free trade deal. We fought the 1988 election over this issue. Sadly, some things don’t change enough, but the fact of the matter is trade is as important for both our agriculture and trade-based economy now as it was back then.

So notwithstanding the multiple reasons why Western Canadians have legitimate reason to be angry with the Trudeau government and policies like the carbon tax, we should be happy with what the federal government has accomplished and credit Saskatchewan Party Premier Scott Moe for recognizing the importance of all this.

“We are pleased with the way the negotiations have come out, to allow us access for our agriculture, manufacturing, our energy industry as well as our mining industry products to flow across North America,” Moe told reporters a press conference last week after the signing of the deal.

Admittedly, Moe and others do have legitimate reasons for misgivings - not the least of which is U.S. President Donald Trump use of Section 232 of his country's Trade Expansion Act to still impose 25-per-cent tariff duties on Canadian steel for, allegedly, reasons of national security.

For Moe, this remains disconcerting because it will be having a big impact on Regina-based Evraz Steel.

However, given the aforementioned imports from the U.S., Moe notes that such tariffs also have potential impact Seed Hawk, Bourgault, Honey Bee and Morris Farm Industries - all, farm implement manufacturers located in rural Saskatchewan that buy specialized steel and sell

their products into U.S. markets. Such trade concerns flow throughout Saskatchewan’s economy.

For example, the Saskatchewan Stock Growers’ Association noted the fall cattle run is just starting and losing duty-free access to the U.S. - always a distinct possibility because it’s something that’s certainly happened in the recent past - is a frightening prospect.

Approximately three quarters of all Canadian beef exports go the United States.

“We’re coming into our busy time of year,” said stockgrowers general manager Chad MacPherson, adding that he has heard of stories of disclaimers in contracts that could have rendered them “null and void” if there was market disruption through a failed trade deal. The main crux of it is that we maintain what we had, and we didn’t lose anything,” MacPherson said. Many are all too aware of how much not having a trade deal could cost us.

Saskatchewan’s population continues to grow, reaching 1,162,062 people as of July 1, 2018, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada. This is an increase of 3,226 people in the past quarter and 11,280 people in the past year.

Saskatchewan’s population has grown for more than 49 consecutive quarters with newcomers to Saskatchewan adding to the strength of our province through their contributions to our communities and our growing provincial economy.

The Government of Saskatchewan is also accepting applications for the Saskatchewan Value-Added Agriculture Incentive. Aimed at improving investment attraction and retention outcomes in the value-added agriculture sector, this incentive offers a non-refundable, non-transferable 15 per cent tax credit on capital costs for newly-constructed or expanded value-added agriculture facilities.

Saskpower Announces Program To Provide Additional Sources Of Energy To Customers

On October 10th, Environment Minister and

Minister Responsible for SaskPower Dustin Duncan announced the new Power Generation Partner Program (PGPP). The new program will provide SaskPower with additional sources of electricity, contribute to the province’s climate change strategy, and offer the province’s industrial and resource sectors another way to reduce their environmental footprint.

“This program will help SaskPower achieve its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2030 by adding up to 105 megawatts of renewable and carbon-neutral electrical generation,” Duncan said. “This is part of our commitment in Prairie Resilience and is another example of real action on climate change without imposing a harmful carbon tax on the people and the industries in Saskatchewan.”

The PGPP allows customers to develop power generation projects to sell electricity to SaskPower. Every year, the PGPP will accept up to 10 megawatts (MW) of renewable generation, like solar, and 25 MW of carbon neutral non-renewable generation, such as flare gas.

Maximum project sizes are now 1 MW for renewable projects, up from 100 kilowatts, and 5 MW for carbon neutral non-renewable technologies, up from 1 MW.

The PGPP is a two-year program, with the option to extend it to three. Applications will be accepted on an annual basis. This year’s application window runs from November 15 to 30. The new program replaces the Small Power Producers program and the Flare Gas Power Generation program.

An updated Net Metering program, where customers can generate renewable electricity to offset their own power use, will be announced later this year.

“We know there is a rapidly growing interest in customer self-generation and we also know that our oil and gas customers are keenly interested in finding ways to harness flare gas and improve their emissions profiles,” SaskPower President and CEO Mike Marsh said. “This is the result of extensive consultations with both the solar and oil and gas industries. I thank everyone who participated for helping us ensure this program better reflects the needs of our customers.”

“We remain committed to reducing our environmental footprint and this program will help us achieve this goal,” Crescent Point President and CEO Craig Bryksa said. “We believe the PGPP program will enhance the competitiveness of Saskatchewan projects by enabling new revenue streams while also reducing GHG emissions and ensuring we are making the most of our Custom Window Packages available, valuable resources in Saskatchewan.

Highway 11 and 12 Interchange Project 85% Complete

The status of the overall Warman and Martensville Interchanges Project is approximately 85% complete. Crews will continue working on the two interchanges this year.

MFD Respond to Minor Mishap

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

The MHS Royals dominated Wilson Field at home on Thursday when they hosted the Meadow Lake Spartans. The defense kept the Spartans off the board for the first half as they forced many fumbles and turnovers that kept the offense on the field for much of the game. Trysten Towsen ran in the handoff from QB Tynan Guenther for his first touchdown to put the Royals on the board early. Guenther was on the mark to his go-to’s, Kody Gutek and Kyler Frasier, as the offense put a lot of points on the board. Gutek tallied three majors while Frasier had two touchdowns in the first half.

Back-up QB Aidan Kliewer took over at the helm in the second half and looked comfortable as he connected with Connor Hamelin early in the third that set up the Ian Frattinger field goal.

Frattinger would find the uprights three times during the game. Josh Dyck had some great kick-off returns for some big yardage in the second half as well.

Evanisky was very happy with how his whole team played through the whole game. He had the opportunity to use a lot of his bench. “I thought the game was a great opportunity for us to reward the kids that work really hard at practice everyday but don't get a lot of playing time”, commented coach Evanisky. “Everything seemed to be working well for us and I thought we finally played hard for all four quarters.” Defensive coaches Shayne Hayward and Vince Riley were also very pleased with their defense. “It was awesome to see our young guys so hungry for playing time”, commented Hayward. “It was a great opportunity to get some of the grade tens on the field and they held their own”.

Evanisky is getting his team ready for the annual Night Game on Friday when the Rosetown Royals come to town. They came off a win in Rosetown two weeks ago so coach Evanisky is getting his players to watch some film to tweak his offense. Come out and cheer on your Royals at the MHS Royals Friday Night Lights October 12. Kick-off is 7:00pm.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Well the first two games of the Thanksgiving weekend in the CFL were intense high scoring affairs whereas the last two were mainly defensive battles.

The week started off with a wild game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Ottawa RedBlacks. Ottawa came back from a 15 point deficit with two TD’s in the final four minutes of the game to push the game to overtime. The Bombers went to work quickly in the extra series scoring a major with a 2-point convert forcing the RedBlacks to match. Winnipeg’s defence was also ready for OT and were able to strip the ball and recover the fumble to take the victory in a crazy 40-32 finish.

Saturday evening saw the BC Lions score their only touchdown of the six minutes into the first quarter and still managed to pull off a win against Toronto. The Argos fought back with two TD’s in the final 2:30 of the game but it wasn’t enough as BC hung on to a 26-23 final.

The next games of the week were on Thanksgiving Monday and it was possible that the team’s offences may have had a bit too much turkey. The league leading Calgary Stampeders found themselves down 6-0 to the league’s worst Montreal Alouettes after three quarters. The Stamps did muster up enough for a win with one rushing TD, a field goal, and a pair of punt singles in a 12-6 sleeper (perfect for sleeping off that turkey hangover).

The second game on Monday was more of the same with just one touchdown scored between the two teams and that would end up being the difference. The Riders and Eskimos went back and forth trading field goals until Saskatchewan took one of their three interceptions to the house with just over a minute left in the game. The Riders would add another field goal to make the final score 19-12 to improve to 10-5 on the season and strengthen their hopes for a home playoff game.

It wasn’t a pretty week but my picks came out a perfect 4-0 (for the 2nd week in a row) to improve my record to 44-21 on the year. My winners for week 18 are Hamilton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Ottawa.
