Martensville Schools Come Together to Host Cross Country Meet Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

On Wednesday, October 2nd Martensville was taken over by approximately 700 students from Prairie Spirit School Division (PSSD). A total of 38 schools participated in a cross country meet that was hosted in collaboration between Venture Heights Elementary School (VHS), Valley Manor Elementary School (VMS), Lake Vista Elementary School (LVS) and Martensville High School (MHS).

For the past two years, the three Martensville elementary schools collaborated on organizing their own Invitational Cross Country meet, which, according to VHS Principal Ron Biberdorf, helped to work out many of the nuts and bolts. Each school had a different responsibility, with VHS taking care of the start-up organization with getting entries, advertising the meet and preparing the track; ABOVE: Cross country coach VMS took care of managing the track, finding volunteers Brent Campbell and runners and running the finish line, and LVS was in charge of Rhea Tillmans and Emery timing, scoring, medals and ribbons. This year, the schools Murfin present a special were asked to run the PSSD District Cross Country meet, present to Marianne Rempel which means that students that competed were able to for her tireless work mapping qualify for provincials, which MHS will be handling. out the cross country route.

“This meet was an excellent way for all four schools to work together collaboratively for one big purpose. Not only did the schools themselves work together, but the School Community Councils also collaborated together to run the concession,” Biberdorf said.

Many people’s contributions helped make this event a success including Constable Sean Nave of the RCMP, Bruce Romanow who was on scene as a Medical First Aid if needed, members of the Martensville & District Kinette Club, SCC Volunteers, City of Martensville employees, and others. Biberdorf noted that Marianne Rempel, who was a former Office Manager at VHS, was the driving force behind the incredible route that was created for the athletes to use. “She put in many hours creating the ‘Rempel Route’ and we could not have done this without her.”

With events like these, hosting communities typically hold the event for three years, so for the next two years, the schools will come together once again in collaboration.

“An event like this is a great shining star for Martensville. It brings many people out and people are really impressed with that field and what the community has to offer,” added Biberdorf.

Congratulations to all of the athletes that competed in the Prairie Spirit School Division District Cross Country Meet.

Prairie Spirit Reports Enrolment Growth

Prairie Spirit School Division is reporting another year of enrolment growth, with an increase of over 100 students this fall. Prairie Spirit has over 11,000 students in its 47 schools, effective September 30, 2019. All school divisions in the province must report their official enrolment numbers to the Ministry of Education at the end of September each year.

This represents over a decade of enrolment growth in the school division. Prairie Spirit’s student enrolment has increased by over 2100 students since the Division was formed through the amalgamation of three school divisions in 2006.

Prairie Spirit School Division serves students in 47 schools and 28 communities surrounding the City of Saskatoon. The school division also includes nine Hutterite colonies and three First Nations communities. The school division covers a wide geographic area: north to Leask, south to Hanley, east to Colonsay and west to Perdue.

How Can You Help Prevent a Sewer Line Backup?

• Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Instead scrape out or pour cooking oil and grease into a container or plastic bag and dispose of it in your kitchen garbage.

• Do not dispose of large absorbent items like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes or feminine products, down the toilet, these are not items that disintegrate like toilet paper will, including “flushable” wipes. These products should be disposed of in your garbage.

• Kitchen garburators increase the amount of organic material in the service lines.

Depending on the condition of the service line, organic material can stick to the lines and over time cause blockages. Compost your organic material instead.

To help prevent a sewer backup, be mindful of what goes down the drain. Your pipes are not built to handle most food items and will almost always cause a blockage in the short or long term. When in doubt, properly dispose of these items by throwing them away.

Dog and Cat Licensing Information

Per the Animal Control Bylaw all dogs and cats must be licensed within the City of Martensville.

-A license enables Animal Control to reunite lost pets with their owners.

-The purchase of a license includes one free ride home for your pet.

-Permanent licenses are available for microchipped pets and are a onetime $25 lifetime fee.

-Owners must update their contact information with Animal Control and their microchip provider when they move or change phone numbers.

Licenses can be purchased at City Hall, Furrific Grooming & Boutique, Affinity Animal Hospital and Paws Republic.

Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule Starting – October 2019- May 2020

Between the months of October and May, the City puts in place an alternating schedule that includes meter reading for half of the City.

The alternating schedule is in place during these months due to extra time required to complete city-wide, month to month meter reads. Changes to seasonal staffing, colder temperatures, inclement weather, higher priority maintenance issues in cooler seasons, are all contributing factors in encouraging residents to provide their own meter reading.

Commencing October- North will have meters estimated, South will be read and residents should submit their readings to City Hall.

November- South Estimated or Submitted, North reads December- South reads, North estimated or submitted January- South estimated or submitted, North reads February- South reads, North estimated or submitted March- South estimated or submitted, North reads April- South reads, North estimated or submitted May- South estimated or submitted, North reads WHY SHOULD YOU PROVIDE US YOUR METER READ? Your water bill will be based on actual consumption preventing you from being over billed or under billed. Days of usage may be higher when an estimate is used resulting in higher billing. A water meter read will ensure accuracy. Estimates are based on prior usage, including summer months where water usage is typically higher. Actual water use in winter months will likely be lower resulting in a lower actual bill.

Police received a report of a theft in the RM of Corman Park. A plate 1000lb tamper and 2 gas water pumps were stolen from a construction site. This is still under investigation.

Damage to Property Reported in Martensville October 4, 2019 at 10:48 a.m. Police received a report of damage to property in Martensville. An unknown person had spray painted

a vehicle. This is still under investigation.

Police received a report on Highway 11 by Warman of a woman walking in the middle of the highway. A 38-year-old female was arrested on outstanding warrants and released at her residence.

Police received a report of shots fired in the RM of Martensville. A 31-yearold male shot a deer close to a residence. The male admitted to shooting the deer from his vehicle.

Police received a report of

an unknown male harassing people at a Martensville business. A 64-year-old male was charged under Alcohol And Gaming Regulation Act.

The CFL was full of blowouts last week and that started on Friday when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats held the Edmonton Eskimos to just one touchdown in a 42-12 beating. Ti-Cats quarterback Dane Evans threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns while his counterpart Logan Kilgore threw one TD and three interceptions in the loss. Hamilton improved to 12-3 on the season and remains in first place in the East. The loss for Edmonton leaves them in fourth and at risk of being overtaken by the BC Lions for the crossover spot.

The Esk’s only need one more win to claim that spot and knock BC out of contention.

On Saturday Calgary and Montreal had the only close game of the week. Despite throwing for 464 yards, Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps were shut out in the second half and fell 21-17 to the Alouettes. Turnovers were maybe the biggest nail in the side of the Stampeders as they threw one interception and fumbled the ball three times in the loss while Montreal didn’t give the ball up once.

Next up in the Saturday triple-header was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders. This game was not exactly an offensive battle with only one touchdown in the entire game. That touchdown came with 2:43 left in the game to seal the deal for Saskatchewan. The 21-6 win combined with the Calgary loss put the Riders at the top of the West with four games to go.

The final game of the week saw the BC Lions win their fourth game in a row in convincing fashion. The Lions stomped all over the Toronto Argonauts 55-8 to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. BC needs to keep winning and Edmonton needs to keep losing in order for the Lions to make the post-season. After a 3-1 week for my picks, I now have a 45-20 record on the season. My picks for week 18 are Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and BC.

The Martensville Fire Department (MFD) is once again gearing up for their annual Fire Prevention Week Open House and BBQ. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 9th from 5pm-7pm and everyone is invited to come out to enjoy supper and get a look at the Martensville Fire Hall and the trucks. Sparky will of course be in attendance!

Fire Prevention Week takes place from Sunday, October 6th through Saturday, October 12th and this year’s theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape”. The purpose of this theme is to remind us how Insurance Claims Accepted small, preventative actions can make a big difference in keeping yourself and others safe from fire. This is a way to encourage families to make a home fire safety escape plan and practice it regularly. In 2018-19, there were 14 deaths caused by fire in Saskatchewan. Thirteen, or 93 per cent, occurred in residential properties. For more information on fire escape planning visit NFPA.org, or talk to a member of the MFD.

At the open house, the public can also view a new addition to the MFD. “We now have a propane fueled car fire prop which will be on display on Wednesday. This kind of item is the future of fire training.

Curling Club Prepares for New Season Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Curling Club is looking forward to another exciting season. The first day of curling will take place on October 15th and although registration night has already taken place, they will be accepting names up until then.

Mondays will consist of an Open League, as well as an Open Doubles League, which is a new addition this year and will consist of six weeks. For those that are interested in the Open Doubles League, there will be a night held on October 28th at 9pm to come out and learn more about the rules. “If you think you are interested, but not quite sure, pop in and learn a little more about it and see what it’s all about,” Curling Club President Clint Dieno said. Tuesday nights will be an Open League night; Wednesday is Men’s Night, Thursday is Open League and Friday will be the Friends and Family Fun Drop in League. For the drop in night, you are asked to register on Wednesday’s and the cost is $5 per person. “It is not an instructional night, but there will be someone around to help out a little. It is a great night to come out with your family and friends and throw some rocks,” Dieno added. For those that want to drop in, there is also equipment available for rent if you do not have your own.

Clint Dieno has been involved with the Martensville Curling Club for years, with this year as his first as President. Having spent the past 25 years curling competitively around the world, Dieno has a big passion for the sport.

With their adult leagues staying at a steady number, the local Club has seen a large increase in their Junior League participants. “Last year we had approximately 66 kids come out, which is a very big number.

We have one of the largest Junior programs in the province, which is pretty exciting. It is a great program and we are hoping that it continues to grow.”

In recent years, as a way to help keep membership costs low, the Curling Club began offering sponsorship spots throughout the Curling Rink, both on the ice and with banners on the walls. “We had a really big reception with the advertising opportunities, not just from Martensville businesses, but from the surrounding area as well. We are very appreciative of the support,” stated Dieno.

With a grant that the Club received, they have put some work into the Curling Rink in order to keep things as up to date as possible. Another new addition was the expansion of the mezzanine to now look onto the skating rink side of the Martensville Sports Centre. “We now have an option for people to sit in the mezzanine and watch hockey or skating and stay nice and warm. It has been really nice for the community and it is a great vantage point. So far, it has been utilized quite well.”

If you do not have a team of four, don’t let that discourage you. Dieno noted that there are always teams looking for another player or you can be placed on a spare list. “If you aren’t able to make it on certain days, we have teams composed of 6 to 8 players that rotate through the season so you do not need to be there every single week and it is not as much of a time commitment.”

Trite Issues Dominating Campaign a Frustration

Canada’s first female Prime Minister was pilloried a quarter century ago for saying: “An election is no time to discuss serious issues.” But she was likely right back in 1993. And she may be even more right in 2019.

Consider the two issues you’ve heard the most about during this campaign. One of them would clearly be Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wearing brown face and black face makeup as younger man and a teenager and the other issue would be whether or not Conservative leader Andrew Scheer was forthright about actually having a Saskatchewan Insurance broker’s license - something he has since admitted was not the case, notwithstanding past claims by him and his party.

This is not to suggest we should discount the news value in either - especially in the middle of an election campaign where what’s deemed consequential news widens significantly. In the case of Trudeau’s brownface/blackface, it is news any time a public figure and especially one aspiring to represent us to other nations does something like this.

Moreover, such issues have heightened news value when there is an element of hypocrisy and the Trudeau’s Liberals have had little problems implying that the Conservative Party and especially the People’s Party of Canada have racist elements within their ranks.

Similarly, Scheer and his party embellished the Conservative leader’s resume while the Conservatives are running a campaign against Trudeau under the theme “not as advertised.” Maybe it’s a stretch for the Liberals to now imply Scheer did something illegal by passing himself off as broker. Certainly, there really is no evidence he acted as an independent, licensed broker. But it is surely fair to consider this to be wrong and hypocritical, given the Conservative campaign against Trudeau.

That said, there’s always a lot wrong in election campaigns and we need to keep the focus on what’s most important to our future than what’s simply trite. What’s become the biggest problem during this particular federal campaign is that we aren’t really having a meaningful conversation on those more important issues.

Despite everyone knowing the set election date of Oct. 21, all sides are getting away with presenting platforms that aren’t properly costed. This shouldn’t happen. As campaigns attempt to buy your votes with things like subsidies to buy your homes, let you go camping or help pay for your kids’ hockey or music lessons, there just hasn’t been enough about much all of this will add to the public debt; however, what’s more unproductively frustrating is that they are not listening to each other - even when it comes to what voters deem to be the most critical issues.

According to University of Saskatchewan poll taken just prior to the start of this campaign, the economy was cited as the most important issue (12 per cent of voters) with the environment closely behind (11 per cent); however, both sides seem frustrated by this.

From those more on the environmental side demanding governments and political parties do more to address the increase in greenhouse gas emissions causing increased global warming, we are hearing frustrations that their views are not being heard, but equally frustrated are those in resource, agriculture and other sectors that drive the economy and create tax revenue we need to run government.

As Dan Cugnet, chair of Valleyview Petroleums Ltd. Argued; "It's not just the carbon tax killing us.”

Combined with a downturn in the world oil market and increased drilling in the U.S., Canadian oil is suffering.

Cugnet said and that directly affects the Canadian and Saskatchewan economy. Yet in this federal campaign about the less consequential matters, you likely haven’t heard enough thoughtful dialogue on these issues. Kim Campbell was likely right. An election seems a poor time to discuss serious issues.

MLA Report With Nancy Heppner Population Growth and Infrastructure Investment Continue

Saskatchewan is still growing strong, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada. Between April 1st and July 1st, 2019, Saskatchewan added 3,435 people bringing our population to an all-time high of 1,174,462.

Our population has now grown in 53 consecutive quarters, increasing by more than 183,000 people during that time.

A growing province creates opportunities and provides the resources needed to support important government services such as education and health care.

This year's budget included an increase of $26.2 million to school operating funding with education infrastructure investment increasing by nearly an additional $20 million.

This year's health budget is up 3.7% ($196 million), much of it focused on mental health and addictions improvements, new long-term care construction and the new costs of operating the new Jim Pattison Children's Hospital.

The growth of our province has provided the means to move forward with 46 brand new or replacement schools and 23 major renovations. It’s also why we’ve been able to add nearly 900 more doctors and over 3,700 more nurses since 2007.

As we get ready to enter the 2020s, our government is planning for another decade of strong growth in Saskatchewan. This fall, we will release a new growth plan for the new decade, with new growth targets and actions we will take to achieve those targets.

Trade Mission to Japan and South Korea

Global market connections are the lifeblood of our growing economy, and Saskatchewan has the food, fuel and fertilizer the world needs. That’s why Saskatchewan is embarking on an eleven-day trade mission to Japan and South Korea with an additional stop in Hong Kong.

Saskatchewan exports to Asian markets have grown by 158 per cent since 2007 to $8.5 billion in 2018. To Japan and South Korea, Saskatchewan sells high quality canola seed, canola oil, wheat, pulse crops and so much more. We will place a high priority on continuing to develop and diversify our existing links but also on establishing new ones.

Asia contains some of the most important and emerging markets for our province. This trade mission will include important conversations to promote Saskatchewan’s sustainable mining sector, our forestry sector, and our valueadded agriculture as well as our agri-food sectors. We will also be establishing educational and exchange partnerships with our post-secondary institutions with strong representation from provincial business and industry stakeholders as well as academic institutions.

October is Agriculture Month

Agriculture has always been and continues to be one of the key drivers of economic growth in Saskatchewan.

Today in Saskatchewan, the agriculture industry provides 50,000 jobs, represents about 10 per cent of our GDP and nearly 40 per cent of our total exports. The industry itself continues to evolve, adopting the best practices leading to higher yields and higher quality products while leading the world in environmental sustainability.

October is Agriculture Month in Saskatchewan – a time to highlight our connection to food and the role agriculture plays in the lives of Saskatchewan people. From primary production and research to processing and technology, there are many stories to share about the care and consideration that goes into producing the healthy, nutritious meals on our plates.

While I know this harvest season has been particularly challenging, I am confident we can get the crop in the bin. Best wishes to all those who are working hard to bring in the harvest, and stay safe!
