Royals Season Ends

The MHS Royals had a great season with a relatively young squad this year. They went 4-2 in regular season play and defeated Esterhazy in the first round of playoffs to earn a home game in the semi final. The Lumsden Devils came to town and opened up the scoring when Aiden Clark ran it in for the first major for Lumsden.

Josh Dyck ran for some good yardage in the next series to set up a quarterback sneak by Ty Guenther for the six points to tie the game.

The defense had difficulty stopping the running game and it was 13-7 after the first. It was all Devils from then on as Lumsden advanced to the provincial final and face Humboldt on Saturday. Coach Evanisky is proud of his squad this year and wished his graduating players good luck. Most of the team will be returning next year so they will have a good base to start the 2019 season.

Special thanks goes out to Patti Rowley, the voice of the Royals for announcing every home game this season. Also to Della Muench, Teresa Koop-Hunter and Myles Loeffler for their behind the scenes work and to the coaching staff for their countless hours dedicated to team development. The Royals will hold their annual awards banquet on Wednesday, November 28. Great season Royals!

Members Petition to Have Directors Removed From Saskatoon Co-op Board

Workers at Saskatoon Co-op locations continue their strike as negotiations between the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) 1400 and the grocery store chain have yet to be settled. The main hurdle in communications lies within Saskatoon Co-op’s plan to initiate a two-tier wage system for new hires, which the union states will lower wages for women and vulnerable members of society.

As of November 1st, more than 900 workers took to the picket line at Saskatoon Co-op food, gas, liquor stores, Agro Centre and home centre locations within Saskatoon, Martensville, Warman, Colonsay and Watrous. Members of the UFCW Local 1400 met with Saskatoon Co-op officials on Friday, November 2nd; however, no agreement was made.

On November 3rd, Saskatoon Co-op released a notice stating that, “Saskatoon Co-op has improved its offer with an even higher wage increase for its employees, but the Union has chosen to walk away from this most recent offer.” Grant Hicks, CEO of Saskatoon Coop, stated that, “Saskatoon Co-op has and will provide generous and fair compensation to our employees and we’ll continue working toward an agreement. To be clear, we’re not reducing the wages of our current employees and we’ve offered industry-leading increases of two per cent per year.”

The release continued to state that adjusted wage scales for new employees are common in the retail industry and that this structure has been used for many years by Saskatoon Co-op’s competitors, many of which are also represented

by UFCW Local 1400. According to the release, the proposed wage for new employees is considerably higher than competitor’s wages and there is gender pay equality.

Noting that staffing consumes 60 per cent of expenses, there is a need to control operating costs in order to be competitive and ensure their longevity. Saskatoon Co-op is one of over 170 businesses that are a part of Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL). “People might see some big numbers coming from FCL and attribute them to Saskatoon Co-op, but our revenues are not FCL’s revenues,” said Wicks. “Saskatoon Co-op is owned and governed by members in our local community and any profits generated are returned to members and the community.”

In response to the release from Saskatoon Co-op, UFCW 1400 states that they did not walk away from the proposed offer and that the employees’ bargaining committee considered the offer and responded by providing the Co-op with alternate proposals. “Co-op had no answer as to why they are offering our new employees $1.67 less than they are paying the new employees at Circle Park Co-op.”

The Co-op grocery store and gas bar located at Circle Drive and 8th Street has not been affected by the strike, as the workers at that location are represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.

Currently, members of the Saskatoon Co-op are collecting signatures to petition to have the current directors removed from their positions and have new ones replace them. A Facebook page called ‘Saskatoon Co-op Members For The Fair Treatment Of Employees’ has been created and a minimum of 300 signatures are required on the petition in order to request a meeting with the board to have a vote on removing and replacing the nine directors.

City Council Discusses New Multi-Purpose Facility and Paving of Township Road 384 Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

The first Martensville City Council meeting of November took place Tuesday, November 6th and featured a presentation by DCG Philanthropic Services, who presented information to Council about a new multipurpose recreational facility in Martensville. “Many of you will know of the great work being done by the members of the Martensville Community Recreation Project, including this weekend’s 80’s cabaret. The MCRP has been actively working together to raise funds and awareness for a multipurpose facility right here in Martensville. The City has also been working on much of the background work needed to make a project like this feasible,” Martensville Mayor Kent Muench stated via Facebook. The City of Martensville has been working alongside DCG to establish more information on what type of facility would be suitable for the community. The DCG representative provided Council with their findings and Council will discuss going forward.

Additionally, Council discussed a request from the Rural Municipality of Corman Park regarding the paving of Township Road 384 (Main Street to Highway 11). This road, which is often used as a commute between Martensville and Warman, sees over 600 vehicles utilize it each day. According to a letter from the RM, the road has been established as a long term growth corridor in the P4G Region. “Corman Park would like to undertake a project to pave this roadway in order to provide a higher level of service to users of the road. The current gravel structure is no longer adequate to withstand the traffic levels, with the only solution being to upgrade to a paved road,” the RM stated in a letter to Mayor Muench. With a section consisting of 1.5 miles of gravel, the cost to pave is approximately $3.2 million dollars. The RM of Corman Park has been working diligently and has high hopes of receiving grant funding of $750,000 from the Municipal Roads for the Economy Program and then partnering with Martensville The War Amps and Warman to cover 1/3 of the additional costs each, which would work out to an estimated $816,000.

The project would include widening and paving of the existing roadway. Council The War Amps returns was asked to consider the nearly 13,000 sets of expense when working on lost keys every year! the 2019 City of Martensville budget.

Local Youth Represents Well in World Karate Championship Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Ten year old Kael Zelisko recently participated in the Children’s World Cup, which ran in conjunction with the 2018 World Traditional Karate-Do Championships that took place in St. John’s, Newfoundland from October 22-28. Zelisko, who is a green belt, brought home a bronze and silver medal from the competition.

For Zelisko, the competition was a bit of a challenge, but overall, was a great opportunity and provided him with a chance to meet people ABOVE: Kael Zeliski, a ten-year-old from from all around the world.

Martensville, brought home silver and bronze “Doing karate makes me feel medals from the 2018 WTKF Championships this good on the inside. Karate is past October. (Submitted) not about learning how to fight someone just because you don’t like them or anything like that. Karate is about self-defense. My sensei told me to never attack somebody first,” Zelisko explained.

Having started karate at four years old, Zelisko has never looked back and has plans to become a sensei when he grows up.

The Martensville classes currently consist of approximately 40 students between the ages of 5 and 15. Led by Sensei Don Crowe, the classes focus on self-defense, life skills and physical fitness with emphasis on development of one’s character. As a member of the Saskatchewan Karate Association, the local class provides students with an opportunity to compete at Provincial, National and International Tournaments as well as allows them to participate in seminars and training sessions with instructors from around the world. Crowe, who has been training since January of 2001 and has a 3rd degree black belt, has approximately ten years of international competition experience himself. “Karate is a great way for kids to learn discipline. It is about learning how to show up, try hard, work in a group, show respect to one another and so much more. I am so proud of Kael and all of his classmates were very excited to see his medals and hear about his experience when he got back,” Crowe said.

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are a number of things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach, allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean up fallen fruit • Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours.

Former Martensville Mayor Inducted Into 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame

Having turned 80 years old this past August, Jim Stone has experienced much within his lifetime; however this past Saturday, Stone and his family had an opportunity to create an everlasting memory. Jim, along with numerous other 80+ year olds from across Canada had the honour of being inducted into Canada’s 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame.

The event this Saturday kicked off with a game against a Bantam Girls team out of Saskatoon, and was followed by a game between all of the 80 year olds that were being inducted. “Playing against the girls team, we definitely realized how slow we are, but although we may be a bit slower, we still get out there,” Stone laughed. That evening, a banquet was held at the Western Development Museum, where each of the inductees were honoured, and knighted with Bobby Hull’s hockey stick. The event even included a special message from Don Cherry himself. “The whole thing really meant a lot to me because I never dreamed when I started playing hockey, that I would even play as long as I have, let alone be inducted into the hall of fame.”

The annual celebrations for the 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame is typically held in Gatineau, Quebec; however, due to the large number of Saskatchewan inductees; Saskatoon had the privilege this year. “Hosting it here was a big deal for us. We had a committee come together to do all of the planning, and I think the people from Gatineau were impressed with our organization,” Stone explained.

Stone has been a Martensville resident since 1978 and is known by many throughout the community. Having been a member of Town Council from 1982 to 1994, then Mayor from 1994 to 2003, Stone has witnessed the growth of the community firsthand, and seen major improvements of infrastructure over the years. Having never played hockey before, it was the construction of Martensville’s arena in the 1980’s that first saw Stone joining a Men’s Rec League.

With his daily schedule getting a tad hectic, Stone stepped away from hockey for several years, up until ten years ago, when he decided to join the 60 plus old-timer hockey league out of Saskatoon, and to this day, continues to play games multiple times a week, as well as ref games. With a league of approximately 200 players; 22 whom of which are over 80; the league has their own dressing room at Schroh Arena. “It really is a great organization. Most of the guys have played hockey their entire lives and have a love for the game and just want to keep on playing. It keeps us busy, and active, and we just love it.”

When asked what advice he would pass along to anyone that thinks they might be too old to play, Stone said, “Go for it. There is no reason to not keep going. If you want to play, come on out, no matter the skill level, there is room for you!”

The regular season of the 2018 CFL season is in the books and it came down to the final game of the season to figure out the final standings. The only game that really mattered was the third game of a Saturday tripleheader between the Calgary Stampeders and BC Lions.

The Stampeders needed a win to lock up first place in the West. A loss would be their 4th in a row and send them to the West Semi-Final against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers while the Saskatchewan Roughriders took top spot in the West. Calgary seemed to be back to their old (8-0 to start the season) selves when they jumped out to a 25-0 lead at the half. The second half however, was back to their recent struggles as they managed just one point on a punt single.

The first half success was all they needed to come out with a 26-9 win and claim the best in the west and a bye to the West Final in two weeks.

The rest of the games didn’t matter standings wise but the RedBlacks’ beat Toronto, Edmonton outlasted Winnipeg, and the Montreal Alouettes ended the season on a high note with a win over Hamilton. With playoffs starting this weekend, here’s how things are going to look. The Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Regina for the West Semi-Final, with the winner heading to Calgary for the West Final next week. In the East the BC Lions have crossed over and will head to Hamilton for the East Semi-Final against the Tiger-Cats. The winner of that one will be greeted by the Ottawa RedBlacks in the East Final.

The final week for my regular season picks was almost perfect with a record of 3-1, improving and completing my season record to 53-28 in 2018 (not bad).

Since there are only seven games left this year, here is my bracket for the 2018 Grey Cup Playoffs. In what will (probably) be a chilly yet thrilling game, Saskatchewan will come out on top over Winnipeg in the West Semi’s, and Hamilton will beat BC in the East.

For the division finals, (as much as it hurts me to say this), Saskatchewan will outduel the Stamps and the RedBlacks will take down the Ti-Cats for a Saskatchewan vs Ottawa Grey Cup Final in Edmonton. My final prediction for 2018 will be that the Saskatchewan Roughriders will be crowned the 106th Grey Cup Champions.

The Martensville High School Choir took to the stage November 2nd and 3rd for their production of “Once Upon a Mattress”, a story based on the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea”.

The audience was blown away with the incredible musical abilities and stage performance of the entire cast.

Upon walking in, it was clear that much time and effort had gone into the entire stage display, as well as each and every costume worn by the actors. The play, which featured a number of delightfully catchy musical numbers, saw a wide array of students take to the stage for their first time, while others, returning for their final performance before graduation.

With the aid of Martensville High School teachers Mrs. Beck and Mr. Kaweski, students began working on the play this past spring, and held rehearsals numerous times each week as opening night ebbed closer. Their hard work paid off immensely as all that had the opportunity to see the performance were left feeling very entertained.

The Martensville High School Choir presents a new musical number each fall, and will begin work on next year’s play this spring.

Great job to each and every individual that contributed to “Once Upon a Mattress”!

Martensville Messenger photographer Braden Ottenbreit showcased some of his personal photos during the SaskAmateur Photo Competition. Photos had to be submitted by September 30th and winners were announced on November 1st.

Braden brought home first place in Sports & Events with his photo ‘Flyin High’, as well as third place in the Landscapes category with his photo ‘Electric Railway’.

This is not the first time that Ottenbreit has received accolades for his talent, as he also won ribbons for four photographs during the photography contest at the Saskatoon Exhibition this past summer.

Martensville Author Partners With Famous Cartoonist to Create Children’s Book Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville is a community full of talented individuals, one of which is local author Dianne Young. Young recently had a chance to showcase her latest achievement, a children’s book done in partnership with ‘Pickles’ comic strip creator Brian Crane. On Thursday, November 1st, Young and Crane presented their collaboration to local residents, including Grade 3 and 4 students from Venture Heights Elementary School. The partnership between Crane and Young brought about the book ‘Grampa, will you tell me a story?’ This marks Young’s sixth children’s book, and seventh book overall.

After coming up with the story, Young couldn’t help but be reminded of the characters Earl and Nelson from the ‘Pickles’ comic strip and decided to reach out to Crane.

Sharing her story with the room, Young explained that contacting Crane was something that was out of her comfort zone; but she thought, “What’s the worst that could happen?”

Less than a day later, Young was surprised to see that Crane had replied and requested a copy of the story, which Crane noted he initially did just to be polite; however, a day after that, another reply from Crane came, stating that he had loved the story and the rest is history as they say.

The November 1st event was the first official launch of ‘Grampa, will you tell me a story’, and later that same evening, a launch took place at McNally Robinson in Saskatoon.

Crane, along with his wife made the trip to Martensville from Reno, Nevada, marking the first official in person meeting between the author and illustrator.

Those in attendance had the chance to see Crane in action as he drew some of his famous ‘Pickles’ characters for the room and talked a little bit about his career.

Following the presentation, the floor was open to questions with many hands from the students going up wanting to know more about being a cartoonist and an author. Both Crane and Young shared some of their personal experiences and stories of past struggles; however, the theme in the room was apparent, which was perseverance. “If you don’t try, how will you ever know,” Young said.

Ford May Not Be a Great Moe Ally

When you think about it, the Saskatchewan Party should be “Standing up for Saskatchewan”. After all, the reason for their very existence is pretty much spelled out in their name. Of course, the NDP have always taken umbrage with the fact that the conservative-based party chose to title itself after the province, but this is a rather conservative province … or at least, it’s been more conservative than not.

Since the 20-year, post-Depression, postSecond-World War run of Tommy Douglas’s CCF - a different political party for a different era - ended in 1964, Saskatchewan has seen more days with non-NDP governments than with NDP governments and should current opinion polls showing the Sask. Party substantially ahead hold up until the 2020 vote, the Sask. Party will have a run of majority governments in Saskatchewan only exceeded by the Douglas government.

Moreover, it’s now been 30 years since Saskatchewan has sent a majority of NDP MPs to Ottawa.

Since 2000, this province has only elected three NDP MPs. Standing up for Saskatchewan and it’s rather conservative outlook should be a natural thing for Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe.

So one can only wonder why Moe feels the need to stand up for Saskatchewan alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Admittedly, one would normally expect the Saskatchewan Premier to seek out political allies especially given that this province was standing alone in its opposition to the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax for a considerable time.

As Moe pointed out after returning from his second press conference with Ford in two weeks, Ford was elected with a solid majority earlier this year to fight the carbon tax, but there’s another of way of looking at this - especially in the context of what’s worked well for the Sask. Party in its long run in office and what it needs to avoid.

As you well know, the Sask. Party was formed as a coalition of Progressive Conservatives, Reformers and Liberals as a means of ending the vote split by parties in Saskatchewan right of the NDP. (Really, old Liberals and Progressive Conservatives splitting the vote in this province was the biggest reason why the runs of the CCFNDP Douglas, Allan Blakeney and Roy Romanow-Lorne Calvert governments were extended as long as they were.)

As such, it would seem advisable for the Sask. Party to stay on that coalition track and focus on its successful Saskatchewan-first approach. That clearly worked well in former premier Brad Wall's 2010 national campaign that lobbied the Conservative government stop the BHP Billiton takeover of PotashCorp.

Certainly, one can argue that Moe is still doing the same thing in his "Standing up for Saskatchewan" campaign - the theme of the throne speech that was all about the carbon tax fight. But if you are making a solid argument that this carbon tax fight is all about what’s good for Saskatchewan people and not just a political fight with Trudeau to the benefit of Andrew Scheer’s federal Conservatives, there is a better way to go about than simply aligning yourself with Doug Ford.

While Ford did defeat what seemed to be a very bad Ontario Liberal government under Kathleen Wynne, he also came to office with substantial political baggage of his own. And Moe’s strategist might also be a little wary of attaching the Sask. Party to a new Ontario government already running into its fair share of problems because of controversial policies. Maybe it can be argued that Moe can’t fight this carbon tax alone. But recruiting economists and even environmentalists (some of who say the carbon tax won’t work) would be more productive for Moe.

Opposition to the carbon tax has to be about what’s good for Saskatchewan - not what’s good for conservatives.

TRAFFIC October 31, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. Police received a complaint of a traffic hazard on Highway 12 near Martensville.

The caller advised that a house was being moved on the highway and due to the fog it was difficult to see.

The house and it’s pilot vehicles had pulled off to the side of the road until the fog cleared. There were no further calls received regarding the house.

November 2, 2018 at 5:55 p.m. Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller reported that the vehicle was swerving all over the road. Police did patrols of the area, but did not locate any vehicles matching the description provided.

Sold Out Event Honours Former Martensville Student Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville had a packed house on Friday, November 2nd for the ‘Bowties for Logan’ fundraiser. The event was held in honour of Humboldt Broncos Captain Logan Schatz, who was one of 16 that were killed in the tragic accident that took place this past April.

Georjeana Christianson, along with friends and family, organized the event to raise money to be used to provide high school scholarships in Martensville, as well as his hometown of Allan. “Education was really important to Logan.

He really strived to do well in school and we want to do something for him in that regard,” Christianson said.

Schatz spent two seasons living in Martensville while playing for the Beardy’s Blackhawks and had come to love the community, and the people within it. That feeling was abundantly mutual, as people lined up to attend the sold out event Friday evening.

All that attended received a bowtie in honour of Schatz, who was often seen donning one prior to each game. “We wanted to fill the hall with bowties for him. We thought this was a good way to give back to the community where he lived and that he lived,” Christianson added.

Blue Circle Campaign Kicks Off Diabetes Awareness Month Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Diabetes Awareness Month kicked off in Martensville on Thursday November 1st as the Pharmasave location in the community began November’s Blue Circle Campaign. The event took place at 10am, and the campaign will run for the entire month with customer’s having the option to purchase a blue circle. Funds raised will go towards funding “D Camps” for children and youth living with type 1 diabetes. Martensville Mayor Kent Muench was in attendance for the campaign kick-off, being the first to purchase a blue circle.

The blue circle symbol, developed by the International Diabetes Federation, is used to signify the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic. November is Diabetes Awareness Month, with World Diabetes Day taking place on November 14th.

The event began with Diabetes Canada Community Development Account Manager Faith Rowland sharing some information about the impact Diabetes has on Canadians, noting that, “Every 20 minutes, a Canadian dies of a diabetesrelated complication, such as heart attack or stroke.” Rowland also noted that one in three Canadians are currently living with diabetes or prediabetes and that another Canadian is diagnosed every 3 minutes.

Since partnering with Diabetes Canada, central Pharmasave locations have raised over $86,000 to support children newly diagnosed with diabetes and the Diabetes Canada D-Camp program. “Last November, the Pharmasave members and their communities raised $26,000 within Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northwestern Ontario to help send 10 children who live with Type 1 diabetes to the D-Camps

program. These camps are structured to provide the kids with tools and support to empower them in gaining independence in managing their diabetes,” Paul Melnyk, CEO Pharmasave Drugs (Central) Ltd., said.

D-camps are designed to provide children diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, along with their families with the knowledge and confidence to better manage the disease. In Saskatchewan, the Children’s Camp is located at Christopher Lake, north of Prince Albert, and sees over 80 children/youth attend the Summer Camp (ages 7-15) and the Leadership Development Program (ages 16-17) each year.

While at camp, children can participate in activities such as archery, arts and crafts, water sports, and more; however, they will also have the opportunity to work alongside fellow campers with diabetes, doctors, dieticians and nurse educators to learn more about Diabetes and to gain more independence when it comes to the disease.

The cost for a child to attend D-Camp for one week is $3,000, and last year, Martensville Pharmasave was the top-selling store in Saskatchewan for the Blue Circle Campaign. “It’s because the people of Martensville are very generous and they are the reason we have been the top-seller.

This year our goal is $3,000; $1,000 more than last year,” stated Lori Biggs, Front Store Manager for Martensville Pharmasave. Donations to the Blue Circle Campaign can be made at Pharmasave locations, or at diabetes.ca/donate.
