The SMBA (Saskatoon Minor Basketball Association) usually runs out of Saskatoon and have divisions for grades 1-12. This year due to COVID they could not run their usual league due to the city school rentals being shut down. They have been fortunate to be able to book some time for two of their six leagues at the amazing Martensville Pavilion (MAP).

This past weekend the Mini league (grade 5 and 6) and Bantam's (grade 7 and 8 boys and girls) were able to have some practices and games at the MAP.

“Being able to rent the MAP has been such an amazing experience and has given our players a place to get the much needed physical activity and a break from the stress of living with COVID. We have 51 teams playing in our league this half of the season and are so excited to be able to operate. We have strict rules in place which do not allow spectators due to COVID but we are able to give kids a sense of normal,” said Randi MacDonald, SMBA Executive Director.

Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce Hosts Virtual Awards Celebration For Local Business Community Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This year, the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) celebrated their 5th anniversary of hosting the Warman, Martensville & Region Business Excellence Awards (WMBEXA). Due to COVID-19, the future of this annual event was up in the air for much of the year; however, the PSCC decided that now, more than ever, the local business community needed something to celebrate.

This past March, the PSCC was two days away from announcing the 2020 WMBEXA finalists, when restrictions were put in place within the province due to COVID. Because of this, the announcement was postponed until this past September.

“I think initially, when COVID first hit, everyone was in panic mode and weren’t in the mindset to celebrate. When they made it through that initial phase and knew that it was going to be okay, then we had people reaching out to us asking if we would still be hosting WMBEXA. These businesses have had a rollercoaster of a year and have seen so many challenges and we have seen businesses do incredible things when it comes to adapting to everything that has been thrown at them. They were craving that moment to come together and celebrate everything that they have overcome this year,” Jaimie Malmgren, PSCC Executive Director, said.

From there, the PSCC decided that they would make this event happen, although, it would look somewhat different this year. On October 29, Malmgren, along with Roger Grona, CEO of Firebird Business Consulting, hosted a virtual WMBEXA celebration.

Although the judging for WMBEXA took place in February, winners of the seven categories did not know the outcome until the live event on October 29th.

This year’s WMBEXA winners were: Community Involvement – Paws Republic, Customer Service – The Medicine Shoppe Martensville, New Business – Upstage Dance Company, Non-Profit of the Year – Warman Collective Garden, Employer of the Year – Aqua Temp, Micro Business of the Year – Team Iron Elles Personal Training and Business of the Year – Warman Small Animal Hospital.

Despite not being held in-person, the event was a success and Malmgren noted that they have had much positive feedback from those that attended. “We knew that this was something that we didn’t want to have to cancel because the businesses had put so much hard work into their applications, so we decided to adapt and re-envision this event.

We reached out to the Chamber network from across Canada and took pieces of other events that we liked to make it our own and it all came together in the end,” Malmgren explained.

A large part of the success that this virtual event had was due to the support from the numerous sponsors that took part. “We were thrown a real curveball this year, but our sponsors were more than willing to adapt their sponsor levels. They never hesitated, never wavered and we would not have had this event without them.”

In previous years, Malmgren stated that the PSCC would normally sell between 350-375 tickets to WMBEXA, and this year, she personally felt that if they were able to sell 100 tickets to the virtual event, that would be a success. That number was quickly surpassed and the PSCC sold just under 300 tickets to this year’s WMBEXA celebration.

One of the things that Malmgren said was missing from holding a virtual event was the ability to see the winners reactions when their name was announced; however, this week, the PSCC will be sharing the acceptance speeches from each of the winners throughout their social media platforms.

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are several things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach, allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean-up any fallen fruit or discarded food items or litter.

• Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours.

How Can You Help Prevent A Sewer Line Backup?

• Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Instead scrape out or pour cooking oil and grease into a container or plastic bag and dispose of it in your kitchen garbage.

• Do not dispose of large absorbent items like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes or feminine products, down the toilet. These are not items that disintegrate like toilet paper will, including “flushable” wipes. These products should be disposed of in your garbage.

• Kitchen garburators increase the amount of organic material in the service lines.

Depending on the condition of the service line, organic material can stick to the lines and over time cause blockages. Compost your organic material instead.

To help prevent a sewer backup, be mindful of what goes down the drain. Your pipes are not built to handle most food items and will almost always cause a blockage in the short or long term. When in doubt, properly dispose of these items by throwing them away.

Civic Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic- What You Should Know!

City Hall is Open, however with some guidelines currently in place. Continue to utilize online and contactless options when possible. Please do not visit City Hall if you are feeling unwell, experiencing flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with someone who is presumptive or tested positive for COVID-19.

Residents and Customers are encouraged to carry out transactions electronically such as online banking, preauthorized payments or TIPPS. Cheques may also be dropped off in the drop slot at City Hall.

Deadline for payment of Property Taxes was October 30th The City had implemented a number of measures to assist property owners and businesses during the pandemic, including extending the Property Tax deadline from July 31st to October 30th. Property Taxes are now due with interest charges on overdue accounts now accruing.

MHS Awards Governor General Medal

The Governor General’s Academic Medal was first awarded in 1873 and has since become one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive. The governor general of Canada continues this tradition of encouraging scholarships across the nation and recognizing outstanding students.

The Governor General Academic Medal is presented to the top student in the school’s graduating class based on his/her grade eleven and twelve final marks.

This year’s recipient is described by her teachers as an independent learner, selfdisciplined, internally motivated, reliable, conscientious, efficient, a quick learner and as having a tireless work ethic. She has a passion for learning and impeccable attention to detail. This year’s recipient was not only a dedicated student in the classroom, but was also a dedicated student in our Martensville High School community. She is currently attending the University of Saskatchewan in the College of Education.

Martensville Civic Election 2020 What You Need to Know

The date for the 2020 election for Martensville City Council is fast approaching. Election day will take place on November 9th at the North Ridge Community Centre at 901 3rd Street North from 8am-8pm.

Voters can also take part in a final advance poll at City Hall Council Chambers, located at 37 Centennial Drive South on November 4th from 3pm-7pm, or vote through a Mail-in Ballot until November 9th.

Mail-in ballots must be received by the Returning Officer at Martensville City Hall before 8pm on November 9th in order to be counted. They can be submitted in-person to Returning Officer Carla Budnick at City Hall, by mail to Carla Budnick at Martensville City Hall – PO Box 970 Martensville, SK S0K 2T0 or by e-mail to cityclerk@martensville.ca. Martensville Mayor Kent Muench has been elected for another four-year term through acclamation, as there were no other candidates running against him.

For City Councillors, there are six seats available, with ten candidates running. Candidates include previous councillors Tyson Chillog, Michael Cox, Darren MacDonald, Jamie Martens and Debbie McGuire, along with new candidates Adam Hartle, Keith Murray, Spencer Nikkel, Travis Sorenson and Matthew Stavenow.

Like many of you, I only moved to Martensville in the last ten

years. But it quickly grabbed my heart as a place to put roots down for myself and my family - the perfect mix between small town community and big city opportunity.

My professional career started in financial planning, before moving to the tech world, where I guide the development of new software as part of one of the companies in Saskatoon’s budding tech community. My combined experience in financial planning and product management means I approach all endeavours with cautious, wellthought-out planning. And my experience with technology and business has taught me to continuously seek innovative solutions to complex problems.

Keeping the balance between small town community while leveraging big city benefits is where Martensville will thrive in the future. Together, we can carve out a path that supports all residents in their personal, professional & community goals.

My wife and I are lifelong residents of Martensville. We love this community so much that we chose to raise our four children here.

I hold a Canadian Investment Manager designation and work as an Associate Portfolio Manager.

I was first elected in 2012 and have spent that time working to make Martensville an even greater community. I am proud of the improvements we have made in the community including having new businesses open, new recreation facilities, a high school expansion, two new elementary schools, a new overpass and skatepark.

We have accomplished a lot but there is still important work to do. It will take prudent fiscal management to ensure we are getting the most value possible out of our tax dollars. 2009. I’ve been a teacher and in-school administrator in Prairie Spirit School Division for 19 years. This fall I began by 10th year as Vice Principal at Valley Manor School.

Buffalo Biggest Problem on Moe’s Horizon

The 2020 election went about as well for the Saskatchewan Party as it possibly could. When you accomplish the rare feat of winning four consecutive majorities — the fourth by a whopping 50-11 margin with recounts and mail-in ballots pending — you have done something historic.

The last NDP government also had four straight majorities, but its 1999 government was a “coalition” propped up by two Liberals. (As a side note; these were the last Liberal MLAs elected in Saskatchewan. The Liberals only ran three candidates in the 2020 election that garnered slightly more than 300 votes).

When it comes to securing four-in-a-row, unaided majority governments, this is the first time in Saskatchewan history since Tommy Douglas’s Co-operative Commonwealth Federation government from1944 to 1963.

That was a 20-year run. By the time of the next scheduled set-date election in 2024, the Sask. Party will have governed for 17 straight years — also, the longest run since Douglas.

However, this year’s election was historic in national terms, as well. It was the third consecutive election in which the Sask. Party cracked the 60 per-cent barrier when it comes to overall popular vote. The only other dynasty to do that was Joe Smallwood’s Liberals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Finally, this is the sixth consecutive general election for the Sask. Party since it was founded in 1997. In that time, it has never had less seats in the general election than had in the previous election. The Saskatchewan Party has truly lived up to its name, clearly supplanting the NDP for the title of “Saskatchewan’s natural governing”.

Given the historic magnitude of the Sask. Party win, it’s hard to imagine how this 2020 election could have gone much better for Premier Scott Moe. As it stands right now, it even looks like the Sask. Party has knocked off NDP Ryan Meili in his Saskatoon Meewasin seat — the third consecutive NDP leader that has lost his seat in a general election.

This was clearly a goal of the Sask. Party, although some would argue that having Meili in the legislature will create added dissention within the ranks of the NDP that seems uncertain as to where it should go. As it stands right now, the NDP is a party that represents little more than north and inner city ridings in the two major cities.

The Sask. Party government now faces practical problems. Moe promised $849 million in new spending over the next four years in a plan calling for billion-dollar annual deficits that will add to the current $24-billion public debt. The pandemic is bound to have on-going effects on a recovering economy, but politically speaking the Sask.

Party seems in well position in its fourth term … with one possible new, glaring exception of the rise of the Buffalo Party in rural seats that were again all won by the Sask. Party.

While a reflection of public mood, this is a political problem of Moe’s own making. Surprisingly, the Buffalo Party that finished third in the popular vote despite only running 19 candidates. The former Wexit party that touts notion of taking Saskatchewan out of the Canadian confederation even managed to finish second in four ridings.

Sure, Buffalo candidates finished well back of the Sask. Party in its traditionally safe rural seats and are exactly a threat to power.

Throughout our history, we have seen other separatists like the Unionest, the Western Canada Concept and the Independence Party and none of them have every mounted to anything, but noisy Buffaloes demanding attention.

They will cause Moe to further attack Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals and while most here clearly despise the Trudeau/Liberals, Moe needs better co-operation with the federal government to get through this pandemic. In an otherwise amazing election night, Moe has found at least one new problem.

Saskatoon Co-op Provides Information on COVID Positive Employees Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

As COVID numbers continue to rise in Saskatchewan, there are more and more announcements made daily regarding potential exposure sites from communities around the province.

On October 30th, Saskatoon Co-op announced that an employee at the Martensville Food Store had informed them that they had tested positive for COVID-19.

The last date that this employee worked was October 25 from 11am to 7:30pm, and has been self-isolating since, which they will continue to do until November 8th, as instructed by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

Another notice was made on November 2nd that a second employee had tested positive for COVID-19. This employee last worked on October 28 from 7am-3:30pm, October 29 from 7am-9:30am and October 30 from 7am10am. They will be self-isolating until November 11 as per the SHA. Other employees that had close contact with this individual were also asked to self-isolate and seek guidance from the SHA, including testing.

“The health and safety of our team members and our customers is paramount as we provide essential goods to our communities, while we face this challenge together,” the news release stated.

Saskatoon Co-op noted that they will be following the direction of the SHA and continue with health and safety measures that were put in place due to the pandemic such as; increasing cleaning and sanitization procedures, practicing physical distancing, utilizing plexiglass barriers, having employees wear masks and asking team members to stay home is feeling unwell.

“Our priority remains to serve our friends and neighbors while keeping our team members and customers safe and healthy.”

Non-Medical Masks Required in Public Spaces Within Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert

On Tuesday, November 3, there were 81 new cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan, with 29 of those cases in Saskatoon. Of the 3,373 reported cases, 842 are considered active, with a total of 2,506 people having recovered.

As of 12:01 am Friday, November 6, the public health orders will be amended, enhancing measures to address increasing COVID-19 case rates in the province of Saskatchewan. Transmission trends in rural and smaller centres has been linked primarily to private gatherings while transmission in the urban areas includes both private gatherings and exposures in public spaces.

One of these enhanced measures include the requirement to wear non-medical masks in indoor spaces within Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert in order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This public health order will be in place for at least 28 days, and then be reviewed by the chief medical health officer.

Currently, the City of Martensville is not included within this order; however, for all communities, health officials do recommend wearing a non-medical mask anywhere outside the home as an additional measure to reduce transmission of COVID-19. They state that non-medical, or cloth masks can play an important role in settings where physical distancing is not possible, or is unpredictable.

Additionally, the maximum allowable gathering size for private gatherings in the home setting will decrease from 15 down to 10. This maximum allowable size includes those household members who ordinarily reside in the dwelling. Any event that occurs in a private dwelling and any outbuildings (garages, etc.) including weddings, religious gatherings and funerals must abide by the 10 person gathering limit. This limit does not apply to households with more than 10 family members residing within the same residence.

Other advice is to have a single member of the household do the grocery shopping and run errands, limit errands to once per week and if working from home, ensure that your workplace will continue to support you to do so.

The Bantam Maddogs ended their season Sunday with a head to head match up in Martensville against the two Maddogs teams. The game was evenly matched with Team Black taking the 20 to 13 lead in the fourth. Team Orange had a last ditch effort to tie the game but turned the ball over on downs conceding the win to team black. Team black brought home the Covid Candy Bowl.

Both coaches, Som Houmphanh and Brian Cook were very pleased with their teams’ performance despite the small rosters. Both the Peewee and Bantam players are getting ready for their awards on November 7.

A Message From Maddogs President Janine Hayward

It is hard to believe that the Maddogs are in their 15th year. It was a small group of parents and friends that were a driving force to make youth football a reality in Martensville and area. I had help from people like Jason Young, Jack Kobussen, Darren Hayward, Monica Tomchuk, David Yee, Karen Decorby and support from the Town as well as many other volunteers I may have missed. Without these people and their dedication this reality would not have happened. It has been such a privilege to be involved with the Maddogs over these years and to see how far it has come because of the dedication and passion for the program from so many. I’m so thankful to have been involved with the many players, parents, coaches and fans who have all become my Maddog family.

This has been a challenging year for our Maddogs, coaches, and parents with the effects of COVID. You have all stepped up to make football safe this year and although it was difficult, we

got football running this season. Our numbers were low because with going to 6 a side, we had to split the teams.

Despite those numbers, our coaches were able to put a team on the field every week and make it work.

We had a wonderful coaching staff for all four teams.

Special thanks to Head Coaches Som Houmphanh, Brian Cook, Grant Currie and Devin Hind and their staff. Your many countless hours are very much appreciated. You taught many valuable lessons to all of the players. It was a challenging year for coaching and you all made it work.

We’d also like to recognize Devin Hind and all the work he did with the flag program to get it up and running.

I’d like to take this opportunity to also say thankyou to Alyshia Hind and Kristin Kohli for all they did as managers to keep four teams running this season. They put in many hours supporting the Maddog program. In saying this, I would also like to wish all of our graduates good luck in their future football careers.

Thank-you to all of the executive, parents, and ABOVE: Janine Hayward with players for all of your work in making this such a great Marty the Maddogs Mascot football organization. There are so many dedicated people from so many communities that come together and we are proud to call ourselves Maddogs. You should be proud to promote football to so many youths.

I’d just like to close by announcing that I am stepping down this year as president. It has been an exciting 15 years and I will always have Maddogs in my heart.

I love this organization and am proud of what the Maddogs have accomplished as a group.

We have brought football to hundreds of youths in this northern area because of all the countless volunteers. I love the game of football and I love the Maddogs.
