Highway 11 and 12 Overpasses Opening a Full Year Ahead of Schedule

On October 26th, the Government of Saskatchewan announced that the overpass project at Martensville and Warman will open to traffic this fall, nearly one year ahead of schedule.

“Martensville and Warman are two of Saskatchewan’s fastest-growing communities and we are thrilled to see the opening of these overpasses to traffic,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Lori Carr said. “This project will get families to work and home safely by improving traffic flow.”

The opening of the overpasses allows drivers to safely travel over the highway on a bridge, and also provides safer access onto the highway in both directions.

Finishing touches will be completed during the next construction season and will include lighting, signage and landscaping.

The Highway 11 project near Warman comprises construction of a new two-lane overpass for Highway 305, on and off ramps, and about 5 km of new four-lane divided highway as well as improvements to the rail crossing and safety upgrades at the Highway 11 and Ferry Road/Central Street intersection.

It also includes construction of about 3 km of new four-lane divided roadway for Highway 12 at Martensville and the new two-lane overpass for Township Road 384 with on and off ramps, which are open to traffic. Further improvements include the reconfiguration of the Centennial Drive and Main Street intersection, and a new Highway 12 exit ramp and signalized intersection at Centennial Drive and Fourth Street.

The Government of Canada is contributing up to 50 per cent of eligible costs through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects, and the Government of Saskatchewan will be responsible for all remaining costs of the project.

“I’m thrilled that the Martensville and Warman Overpass project is on track to be completed so far ahead of schedule,” said Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. “Easing traffic congestion and improving safety along Canada’s major trade routes is a priority for our government. We’re proud to have funded these important improvements to Highway 11 and 12, which will help bring new economic opportunities to the region.”

The $60.6 million project in Martensville and Warman is being overseen by Peter Kiewit Sons ULC.

During the remainder of construction, motorists are reminded to obey signs, be alert and slow down when slower speeds are posted in the work zone.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $8.4 billion in highways and infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 13,000 kilometres of provincial highways.

RCMP Host Town Hall Meeting

A Town Hall meeting was hosted by the RCMP in Martensville October 30th at North Ridge Community Centre. The purpose of this meeting was to invite the public to learn more about the local detachment and provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions. Meetings were also held for the RM of Corman Park, Warman, Delisle and Radisson. The meeting began with Sgt. Rob Eyre providing some information and updates about our detachment and discussed the importance of intelligence led policing, advising those in attendance how important it is for the public to be their eyes and ears because they are unable to be everywhere.

“If you see anything suspicious, please call it in with as much information as possible. We have yet to solve an unreported crime,” Eyre said. Other topics covered included how calls that come in are prioritized, traffic, radar, check stops, RCMP presence within the local schools, community presence, neighborhood watch and more.

Eyre also explained that the local RCMP detachment has two or more members available 24 hours a day and through a municipal contract, the City of Martensville pays for 8 members and the City of Warman pays for 10 members. An update of statistics for the year show that the 2018 calls for service from January to October in Martensville are down approximately 600 from 2017.

Staff Sgt. Greg Abbott of the Saskatoon RCMP then spoke a little bit about how policing has changed in Saskatchewan over the years. There are concerns nowadays that didn’t used to be an issue and police require training in various areas such as on school lockdown measures, conducted energy weapons (CEWS’s), dangerous drugs and more. “These are just some of the challenges that members have. Our laws may not be perfect, but they are

pretty good when compared to the rest of the world,” Abbot stated.

Abbott also discussed the recent legalization of cannabis and how the RCMP is aware that the number of impaired drivers will increase, which will be a focus of theirs. “In my opinion, the biggest threat to public safety is impaired drivers,” Abbott said. Currently there are 900 RCMP members within Saskatchewan, and 100 of them are Drug Recognition trained. Abbott continued to state that for him, cell phones are the second biggest risk to public safety, commenting on the numerous deaths that occur as a result of motorists being on their phones.

From there, the meeting was open to questions from the public with some concerns being raised about speeding within town limits. RCMP plan to host another town hall meeting this spring.

Coming Together to Create a More Physically Literate Community Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Physical activity is an important part of everyone’s lives, and for the past year, the City of Martensville has been working alongside Saskatchewan In Motion and Partners for Physical Literacy in order to ensure that the community is more Physically Literate. Physical Literacy can be defined in numerous ways; however, is often described as providing children with the opportunity to develop the skills, confidence and love of movement to be physically active for life. For Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator, there are several components involved when it comes to physical literacy; motivation, confidence, competence, knowledge and awareness. “For me, it is all of these things together that defines physical literacy and makes you a physically literate person.”

Throughout the past year, there have been focus groups, surveys and research done and most recently, a ‘Moving Together Symposium’ was held at North Ridge Community Centre. The purpose of all of this is to work together to see what can be done to increase the physical literacy within the community. The symposium ran from 9:00am – 3:30pm and consisted of numerous presentations, guest speakers and a workshop. The workshop was broken down into four main topics; understanding and awareness of physical literacy, schools as a hub, sports and recreation, and outdoor unstructured opportunities. “We broke those four areas down and talked about what we are doing well, where we can see improvements and what changes we can implement,” Reddekopp explained. Approximately 55 people attended the October 25th event, ranging from provincial representatives, regional representatives, community leaders, business owners, students, parents, educators, protective services, service groups and more. “It was so great that we had such a wide spectrum of people in the community come out. The day was amazing and there was so much positive conversation and so many people that really seemed to want to step up and work,” Reddekopp said.

Representatives from Saskatchewan In Motion (SIM) were in attendance for the symposium and are now compiling the results in order to create a community profile for Martensville. From there, they will schedule meetings with some of the informal committees that were created at the symposium and work with members of the community to increase the physical literacy of the community.

As a group of parents, teachers and communities working together, SIM typically works at encouraging children to become more active. “Basically, kids these days don’t move a lot. We have engineered a lot of physical activity out of our lives. We are worried about safety, there is screen time and other issues that are taking away from the physical activity that kids should be getting,” Kim Herperger, Communication Strategist for SIM, stated. Herperger also noted that in Saskatchewan, less than 15% of children are active enough to meet the national guidelines; a fact that many find hard to believe. The partnership with Martensville is a new approach for SIM, and Herperger notes that, “the whole idea of this is that if you as a child don’t learn some of the basic skills and become comfortable in moving your body, you are much less likely to do that as an adult and so throughout life you aren’t going to be as active.”

Not only is being active good for you physically, but it is also good for your brain. It can help you feel more alert, more open to learning and more. Often physical literacy is thought of as something that comes from schools and organized sports; however, encouraging children to be more active outside and to different environments, allowing them to explore and play can be a huge benefit to their physical literacy. “Kids require approximately 60 minutes of movement each day to be healthier and happier, so we have a model that is called 30-30-30; 30 minutes at school, 30 minutes at home and 30 minutes in the community most days. By doing this, they will meet those requirements; however, it is not just up to one person or one organization to encourage that. We all need to work together in order to ensure that our youth is physically active and physically literate.”

Following the symposium, the next step is taking information discussed and implementing it into the community. Beginning this week, there are plans to collaborate with the local schools to evaluate students in Grades 4 to 8 on their physical literacy.

“We are zeroing in on activities that would give you the confidence and competence to participate in any kind of activity as you get older. If you don’t have those basic skills, you aren’t going to feel motivated and confident to do them later in life,” added Reddekopp.

Come May, another evaluation will be done to see if work done throughout the school year has increased their ability to perform tasks such as throwing, catching, balance, hopping, skipping, etc.

Another symposium is set to take place in the spring, and will be open to anyone wishing to attend.

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are a number of things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

TRAFFIC Hit & Run in Warman Business Parking Lot October 23, 2018 at 9:10 a.m. Police received a complaint of a hit & run in a parking lot of a business in Warman. The caller advised that they parked and noticed the damage a short time later. There were no witnesses.

No Injuries in Single Vehicle Roll Over October 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Police received a complaint of a single vehicle roll over on Range Road 3090. Police attended the scene and found that the male youth driving the vehicle from Osler lost control on gravel, entered the ditch and rolled. There were no injuries or charges.

Minor Injuries in Two Vehicle Accident near Warman October 24, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident on Highway 305 near Warman. Police attended the scene and found that a vehicle driven by a 43 year old female lost control while attempting

to pass a second vehicle, entered the ditch and rolled. The three passengers in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries on scene. One of the vehicles required towing from the scene. There were no charges.

PROPERTY Reports of Theft from Business Compounds in RM of Corman Park October 23, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Police received a complaint of a theft from a business compound in the RM of Corman Park. The caller reported that someone cut a fence on the property and entered a building and stole a number of items. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

October 24, 2018 at 10:50 a.m. Police received a complaint of a break, enter and theft from a business in the RM of Corman Park. The caller reported that someone entered a locked compound and a building on the property and

stole a number of items from the business. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

B & E at Business in Corman Park October 27, 2018 at 9:50 a.m.

Police received a complaint of a break and enter in progress at a business in the Corman Park Industrial park. Police attended the scene and arrested a 38 year old male from Lang, a 49 year old male from Saskatoon and a 29 year old male from Regina. They were charged with a number of theft related charges.

PEOPLE October 24, 2018 at 11:20 a.m. Police received a complaint of a male sitting in the ditch along Highway 11 near Warman. The caller advised they did not stop to check on the male. Police made patrols of the area, but did not locate anyone sitting in the ditch.

Person Causing Disturbance at Business in Martensville October 26, 2018 at 1:20 p.m. Police received a complaint of a person causing a disturbance at a business in Martensville. The caller reported that the male was scaring employees at the business and wanted police to attend. Police attended, but the male left before police arrival. No further calls were received.

Carbon Tax Still Doesn’t Change Things

Even when it comes to issues as complex as climate change and the carbon tax, there usually is a bottom line and that bottom line is driven by common sense. So here’s the common sense in the wake of the federal Liberal government announcement last week that will return 90 per cent of all the money it collects from its carbon price directly to the Canadians.

If you give people money to compensate them for the extra costs of gas and other things caused by a carbon tax, it’s quite likely they will continue to spend it on those exact behaviours that burn more carbon. For that reason, it seems unlikely that Trudeau’s carbon tax will actually work.

If gas goes up 20 cents a litre, does it necessarily stop you from driving your kids to hockey or shopping?

Maybe if you had to bear the costs yourself, it would cause you to car pool when you take your kids to hockey. Maybe it might get you thinking about being a little more efficient when it comes to shopping trips you make when you drive.

In time, it might even have you thinking about getting a more fuel-efficient vehicle … although in our climate often plagued by ice and snowdrifts for six months of the year, that will remain a tough choice, but what is the incentive to do so if you are getting a cheque back from government to cover the added gas costs? Will the money from Ottawa (an estimated $598 in Saskatchewan) be enough to help buy a new vehicle or make needed home renovations to improve energy efficiency? “Starting next year, it will no longer be free to pollute anywhere in Canada,” Trudeau said in his announcement.

Ottawa will now impose a minimum price on pollution of $20 a tonne of carbon emissions on Jan. 1.

Non-compliant provinces like Saskatchewan (along with Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick) will now have a federal carbon levy on fuels while large industrial emitters will face a cap-and-trade like system imposed on them, starting April 1.

While 90 per cent of the rebates will go back to households, the remaining 10 per cent will go back to small and medium-sized businesses, schools, hospitals and other organizations unable to pass back to consumers. This is all designed to mitigate the impact on the public and others who will see carbon tax costs passed on them, but the Saskatchewan government doesn’t see it that way. “We see it as a cynical vote-buying scheme using your money to buy your vote,” Premier Scott Moe told reporters. In fairness to Trudeau and the federal government, this isn’t exactly as Moe suggests.

Carbon pricing does seem to be at least based on a revenue-neutral premise that takes money from those the federal government deemed to be polluters and giving it back to people to pay the added costs, but, again, does that really address greenhouse gas emissions? Will it necessarily even chance the behaviour of so-called emitters?

After all, if their customers have money in their pockets from the federal government to pay the added carbon taxes that will now be required, how does it really effect how business is done?

Certainly, one can be critical of provincial governments like Saskatchewan doing little other than being critical - always, the easy way out for politicians.

Ottawa has a legitimate point that Saskatchewan’s “Prairie Resilience” - a plan that doesn’t really address coal-fired electrical 'Carbon tax' trick-or-treater not as scary as 'status quo' generation that, arguably, is the province’s biggest single GHG emission issue, but the Sask. Party government’s argument that it’s just not sound to send people cheques to compensate them for the secondary costs, this tax seems to make sense. The bottom line is this carbon tax won’t likely change behaviour.

Response to Details of Federal Carbon Tax

The new session of the legislature opened this week with a Throne Speech focused on our government’s commitment to stand up for Saskatchewan people. This includes our plans to implement our Prairie Resilience Climate Change strategy, improve cellular coverage in rural communities, and deliver a balanced budget for 201920.

While our economy and the province’s finances are showing signs of improvement, we are still facing challenges due to the threat of a damaging federal carbon tax, continued sanctions from the United States on our steel and uranium industries, and a deeply discounted price for our oil caused by a lack of pipelines.

The day before our Throne Speech, politicians from Ottawa made headlines with a new plan to hit Saskatchewan with a carbon tax. This scheme is a shell game where we would all be forced to pay more for basic necessities like fuel, heat and power.

Promising a new rebate for families to offset all of these increasing costs, the Trudeau Liberals are now desperately trying to convince us that we will actually be better off by paying more to gas up our vehicles, heat our homes and keep the lights on.

Most of us here in Saskatchewan have to drive a lot for work, and for our kids. We also have to heat our homes on some very cold days. The Trudeau carbon tax means that all of these things are going to cost a lot more – and those are just the direct costs.

Hockey rinks, rec centres, school divisions, and municipalities are all going to be paying a lot of carbon tax and, at the end of the day, that cost is going to get passed along to us.

Our agriculture sector will be hit hard as well, despite the federal government claiming otherwise. Producers will still pay on inputs such as road and rail transport, as well as natural gas and propane consumption in shops, barns and grain dryers.

Saskatchewan people won’t be fooled. The new Trudeau carbon tax plan is a cynical attempt to buy your vote with your money.

Saskatchewan people know the Trudeau carbon tax is not good environmental or economic policy. An analysis from the University of Regina earlier this year estimated the federal carbon tax would hurt Saskatchewan’s economy by almost $16 billion, with little effect on emissions.

Our government has a plan for the environment and reducing emissions – our Prairie Resilience strategy – which has been accepted by the federal government.

The feds, however, are still choosing to put this punishing tax on Saskatchewan.

We do not believe a carbon tax will be effective in tackling climate change. It will hurt Saskatchewan’s economy and it will hurt Saskatchewan families’ finances.

We will stand up for Saskatchewan people, fight the carbon tax, and this new federal Liberal vote-buying scheme.

Our constitutional court challenge continues and we are repeating our call for the federal government to respect our legal challenge and hold off imposing the carbon tax in Saskatchewan at least until the courts have decided.

Saskatoon Co-op Workers Prepare for Strike

On Monday, October 29th the union for Saskatoon Co-op workers announced that a strike could be occurring as early as 12:01am on Thursday, November 1st. More than 900 workers are members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Canada Local 1400, which represents the workers at grocery stores, gas stations, Agro centre, home centres and liquor stores across the region. The union served the notice on the Co-op and the Minister’s office this past Monday.

According to Rob Gillies, the UFCW Canada Local 1400 Director of Negotiations, the main issue for the workers is the employers’ refusal to bargain the outstanding issues, including the Saskatoon Co-op’s demand to introduce a second-tier wage grid, which would see the Co-op lowering the wages of new employees. “The sole reason given by the CEO of the Saskatoon Co-op for the introduction of the second tier is ‘long term sustainability’ of the Co-op. Saskatoon Co-op noted that they are disappointed that the union walked away from its best and final offer after spending more than a year negotiating a new agreement, stating that this offer provided higher wages and increases than comparable competitors in Saskatoon. “We’ve made an offer that protects our employees’ wages and benefits while ensuring our Co-op can remain competitive in the long-term,” Grant Wicks, Chief Executive Officer of Saskatoon Co-op, stated.

partnership since 1979. “We value the longstanding relationship we have with our union.

Throughout negotiations, we have found common ground on a number of issues. We’re committed to continuing to work together to come to an agreement that’s fair and equitable for both parties,” Wicks added.

Breast Cancer Survivors Working to Provide Support to Others in Time of Need

The annual C95 Breast Cancer Marathon was held Friday, October 26th and numerous people that have been affected by the disease came together to help raise money that will go towards breast cancer research within the province. The first marathon was held 19 years ago and in that time, over $4.6 million dollars have been raised, with $358,310 coming in this year alone.

With an estimated total of 750 new cases of breast cancer occurring within Saskatchewan in 2018, and approximately 160 deaths from the disease within that same time, research is vital to survival. One in eight women within Canada is expected to develop breast cancer in her lifetime and approximately three Canadian women are diagnosed with breast cancer every hour. This event gives those that are currently diagnosed with breast cancer, or those that have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past, a chance to share their stories and raise awareness.

Deanna Ratlzaff, a former Martensville resident and a C95 Radio Marathon Ambassador, spoke about her experience. Having been diagnosed at the age of 44 on April 30, 2015, Ratzlaff notes that it is a day that is forever seared within her brain. Having gone in for a routine mammogram, expecting to head to work afterwards, Ratlaff was told the news that would forever change her life – she had been diagnosed with stage 2B, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma ER+ PR+. Choosing to have a Bilateral Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, and requiring chemotherapy, Ratlaff noted that a part of her will always be affected by breast cancer.

Martensville resident Kristen Fiolleau, who is also a C95 Radio Marathon Ambassador, took time to share her story as well. Diagnosed in May of 2014 with Triple Negative Breast Cancer and in October of 2014 with Metastatic Breast Cancer, Fiolleau has required treatment including

several regimes of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation.

With a diagnosis of Stage 4 Breast Cancer, which is terminal, Fiolleau knows that the money raised through the C95 Radio Marathon for research could be the difference between life and death for her, noting that the five year survival rate is 22% and that she has made it to year four.

Through their personal experiences with breast cancer, and finding that there was a lack of resources available, Fiolleau and Ratzlaff, along with several other women started Breast Cancer Support Saskatoon. The group started in January 2017, and is a peer led support group.

All of the Facilitators within the group have had training from the Canadian Cancer Society, and offer women of all ages, at varying stages of treatment, newly diagnosed, those undergoing treatment, those with Metastatic Disase and long-term survivors, a place to find support from others that are currently going through, or have gone through in the past a chance to gain support from one another.

Over 2 million Canadians travel to Mexico every year, making it our second-most popular travel destination behind only the United States. Obviously, it’s pretty hard to compete with Pittsburgh’s famous Randyland. But even without a Randyland of their own, Mexico has managed to attract tourists with nothing more than year-round warm weather, fabulous tacos-on-demand and, oh, a few hundred incredible beaches. And if there are two things Canadians love - especially in dead of winter when a starting car sounds like a calving whale and people are afraid to go out too soon after showering for fear their hair will freeze - they are hot weather and beaches. Mexico it is, then. But where? There are dozens of great ocean-front destinations scattered up and down both coasts, each with their own personality, benefits and drawbacks. Hopefully this quick primer can help you narrow down your choices.

Cabo San Lucas - The southern tip of the Baja California has a reasonable selection of affordable choices, especially if you are willing to stay a little outside the most popular areas. Being quite a bit farther north, the nights are noticeably cooler than the other places on this list. The waves are often too strong for children but, on the other hand, you have the unique desert landscape nearby, as well as some amazing wildlife viewing on the Sea of Cortez.

Mazatlán - The king of Mexican tourism back in the 70’s and 80’s, Mazatlán has somehow remained stuck back in that less pretentious era of small, 2-story hotels and basic Corona tank tops. It was long ago surpassed in popularity by the others on this list, which is why it has remained small and manageable. It also has plenty of affordable little hotels and a terrific old town full of unassuming restaurants, and an enticingly authentic Mexican feel. The main issue is finding a decent flight, since it doesn’t get many direct charters.

Puerto Vallarta - Spreading north at a rather alarming rate, PV is firmly one of the Big Two in Mexico these days, along with the Mayan Riviera. And, while it does have a lot of big resorts to choose from, it is also still possible to find something a bit more laid-back if that’s your thing. You can still find 5-peso tacos and quiet plazas in Old Town Puerto Vallarta, and some of the nearby beaches such as Sayulita and Rincon de Guayabitos make great day trips. The beaches are beautiful, the malecón might be the best in all of Mexico and, while the waves are usually pretty big, it does boast the most consistent winter weather and is even with Cancún for the best flights.

Huatulco - Hidden down in the sweltering southwest corner of the country, one of the first things you’ll notice about the Huatulco area is the heat. It is almost always in the 30’s, 4-5 degrees hotter than Puerto Vallarta at any given time, and more humid to boot.

So, you need to decide if blessed warmth is your main priority when escaping another brutal Saskatchewan winter, or if your shirt starts to get damp just thinking about those numbers. Besides that, though, Huatulco has some very nice resorts clustered around nine beautiful bays with relatively small beaches, and the area’s main town of La Crucecita is clean and new (literally, much of it has been built since the 80’s) but still has a vibrant local plaza.

Cancun and the Mayan Riviera - Over on the Caribbean side of the country there are lots of cheap direct flights to Cancún, and then a variety of choices once you get there.

While the city of Cancún itself isn’t great, there are some nice areas nearby. Tiny Isla Mujeres, just off Cancún, is a gem, and heading south along the Mayan Riviera you’ll find

upscale Playa del Carmen, which features plenty of variety but is pretty touristy. Next up is Tulum, which has one of the nicest beaches in all of Mexico, terrific ruins, and worldclass kite-surfing (which, of course means it is often windy). Unfortunately, the Caribbean weather in January and February tends to be much more volatile than the Pacific side.

So, there is your general overview, although there are dozens more excellent options up and down both sides. Wherever you choose, you really can’t go wrong because there will always be two things you can count on – a stunning beach and an impressive selection of overpriced Roughrider ponchos. So, sit back and relax with a cold Pacifíco, and get started working on your next winter getaway.

Foundation Funds $39,000 in Learning Grants For Prairie Spirit Students

$39,000 in Learning Grants from the Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation will support innovative learning opportunities for Prairie Spirit students this year. The Foundation recently announced the recipients of this year’s Learning Grants.

The Foundation’s Learning Grants are designed to support students in Prairie Spirit School Division, with an emphasis on student engagement and relevant learning opportunities.

Applications for Learning Grants opened in June, with a focus on enhancing student engagement by empowering young people to explore their passions and create change in their classrooms, their schools and their community.

Following a rigorous application process, the Foundation approved thirteen submissions from students, teachers and administrators and provided funds to schools throughout the Division.

“We are just thrilled to fund and support new and innovative learning opportunities. Since February 2017, the Foundation has provided over $106,000 to Prairie Spirit schools,” said Denise Kendrick, Fund Development Manager of the Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation.

“We are looking forward to hearing how these grants will impact our students. This is why we exist as a Foundation. Without the support of our partners, sponsors and fundraiser participants, opportunities for our students such as these learning grants would not be possible. With increased and continued donor support, we will be able to fund more grants in the future.” Explained Bonnie Hope, Foundation Board Chair.

The Foundation approved applications where the proposed learning environment supported students to collaborate within and outside the classroom, learning side by side.

The Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation was established in 2014 to engage partners in public education to enrich opportunities for students to become contributing citizens and learners for life. The Foundation encourages and facilitates community and corporate support and involvement in public education.

The Foundation raises funds through a variety of sources, including donations, partnerships, sponsorships, its annual Golf Classic and A Celebration of Learning, which will be held in Warman on January 31, 2019.

MFD Respond to Minor Mishap

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

Royals Move on to Host Provincial Semifinal Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Royals football team is on a roll. Their most recent victory came on October 27th against the Esterhazy Warriors where they came out ahead 47 – 26 in the 3A Nine Man Provincial QuarterFinal.

The game began as a close one for the first half of the game, with the Royals down in the second quarter.

As halftime neared closer, Kody Gutek positioned himself perfectly for an interception which led to a touchdown and gave the Royals the lead.

For the second half of the game, the Royals defence did a great job keeping the Warriors out of the end zone, with the opposing team only scoring once off of an interception.

The Royals team came together well and had a strong game overall with Josh Dyck, Kyle Fraser and Tynan Guenther all scoring touchdowns. The team will host Lumsden for the 3A Nine Man Provincial Semifinal on Saturday, November 3rd, with kick-off taking place at 1pm.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

We are headed into the final week in the CFL and luckily for the Calgary Stampeders their final game will be in November. October was terrible for the Stamps with their only win coming from a sad 12-6 win against the last place Montreal Alouettes. After starting the season 12-2 through the first 14 games, Calgary has now lost their last three games and are at risk of losing the top spot in the West.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders played their final game of the regular season this past week and thumped the BC Lions 35-16. The win improved the Rider’s record to 12-6 and since they won the season series against Calgary (2-1), the Stampeders need to win in order to be the best in the west.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will stay in the West playoffs with their win over the Stamps while the BC Lions will cross over to the East and play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Ottawa RedBlacks clinched first place in the East with a 30-13 win over Hamilton and will get a bye to the East Final. But there is still one week left in the CFL and only one game has any meaning.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are hoping BC plays all of their starters in the last game of the year against the Calgary Stampeders because if BC wins, Saskatchewan will go straight to the West final.

If Calgary wins then they will head to the West final and the Riders will play Winnipeg in the West Semi-final.

My picks are now 50-27 on the year after a 2-2 week 20. This last week is going to be tough to predict with the possibility of teams not playing their top guys, but my final regular season picks are Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and Hamilton.

Martensville Maddog Alumni Keep Tradition Alive By Gathering for Annual Photo

Former Martensville Maddog players who now have joined the BJM Saints, won the 2018-2019 3A Football city championship with their high school team. They advance to the provincial semi-finals next weekend. If they are successful next weekend they will play in the provincial finals in Regina on November 10th. Each year the former Martensville Maddogs gather for a photo and former Maddog Coach Delahey was there giving them supportive hugs.

Maddogs Host Playoffs Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

Both the Bantam and Peewee Maddogs had stellar seasons with the Bantam team finishing first in league play and the Peewees finishing third. The Bantams got a bye in the first round and hosted their first ever playoff semi-final game in Martensville on Sunday.

It was the Bazaar and Novelty Bowl, as every playoff game is sponsored in the KFL. The weather cooperated once again but the Maddogs lost a heartbreaker 28-27 to the Titans.

The Titans were first to strike off the opening kick-off for the major taking the early 7-0 lead. Both defenses would contain the offense and keep them off of the board for the rest of the quarter as both teams were evenly matched. It would take until early in the second quarter for Quarterback Latrell Brown to handoff to Brody Nelson for the touchdown to tie the game. A few minutes later Brown connected with Nelson once again who ran the 38 yards for his second major taking the 14-7 lead. With only seconds left before half, Titans’ Harmon Waynert stepped in for the interception and ran the field for the touchdown to tie things at half 14-14.

The Maddogs would get back some momentum when David Beauregard recovered a fumble early in the third. Parker Peterson would find the endzone to give the Maddogs the 21-14 lead. The Titans had a short kick-off that backfired for them as Beauregard once again recovered to give the ball back to the Maddogs on the Titan 42-yard line. Peterson would take the hand-off and break three tackles to get some great yardage, but this would be shortlived as it came back on a procedure call. Penalties plagued the Maddogs all afternoon.

Tanner Jansen would tie the game for the Titans at 21 at the end of the third.

At 11:40 in the fourth, Brody Marcinkiw had a big 45-yard run to give the Maddogs the 27-21 lead as the convert was not completed. With only 3:10 left in the game, Eric Quigley found the endzone for the Titans and took the 28- 27 lead. With only five plays left in the game, Nelson had a huge run down to the Titan 10-yard line but once again it was called back on a holding call. The Maddogs gave it a great effort but could not get points on the board and the Titans advance to the final with the 28-27 win.

“This was the most fun coaching I have ever had”, commented head coach Grant Currie. “I couldn’t be more proud of what these players have accomplished this season”.

He had all the players make several goals before the season and they accomplished many of these. Currie isn’t just about the football but tries to teach life lessons to his players.

Congratulations to the all the Maddogs on a great season. The awards day is slated for November 18.
