Snow Day After the weekend snowstorm dropped approximately 35cms of snow in the area, schools, along with many businesses were closed on Monday, November 7th due to travel not being recommended on roadways, which resulted in a snow day for many families. City Council Election Results See Five Incumbent Candidates Re-Elected Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Civic Election was held on November 9th, and despite the weather conditions, many local residents made their way to North Ridge Community Centre to vote for the six City Councillors that would be representing Martensville for the next four years.

Martensville Mayor Kent Muench was acclaimed, as there were no other candidates running for Mayor this term.

For City Council, a total of ten candidates were in the running, which included five incumbent candidates: Debbie McGuire, Jamie Martens, Tyson Chillog, Darren MacDonald, and Michael Cox. In addition, another five candidates were running for a position on Council which included: Spencer Nikkel, Matthew Stavenow, Travis Sorenson, Keith Murray and Adam Hartle.

Following the results, the five incumbent candidates were elected for another term on Council, and new candidate Spencer Nikkel was elected for his first term on Martensville City Council.

Nikkel noted that, “The results from this election show strong continued support from the community for the current leadership. All five incumbents have been re-elected, and by fairly high margins. That's a pretty strong mandate to continue in the same general direction, and we have to listen to that as the new council. I'm honoured to be able to join the ranks as the newest council member and I look forward to helping guide our city over what promises to be an exciting four years for Martensville.”

Hope Re-Elected For Fourth Term As Martensville Trustee on Prairie Spirit Board of Education Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

After serving as the Martensville Trustee on the Prairie Spirit Board of Education for the past 11 years, Bonnie Hope decided that she would not be seeking re-election this year; however, as the deadline for second call for nominations was nearing and no one had come forward, Hope was asked to reconsider her decision.

“A strong and experienced voice is important for our community, and so I am in the race again,” Hope stated in a social media post. Following the November 9th election, it was confirmed that Hope was elected and would be serving her fourth term. “Thank you Martensville for entrusting me with ABOVE: Bonnie Hope the responsibility of being your public Incumbent school board representative for another four years. I am so grateful for all of your support,” Incumbent Hope said following the announcement of the results.

Heading into the election, Hope had a number of goals and objectives that she Incumbent would be working towards if re-elected, which included continued work to ensure the Incumbent safety of all students and staff throughout the COVID pandemic. Hope also noted that she will be continuing to be a strong voice for Martensville on the Board of Education while respecting all schools and community needs in the Division.

Throughout her previous terms, Hope was able to see the addition of Lake Vista Public School to the community, as well as the renovation and addition at Martensville High School. With Martensville continuing to grow, Hope is prepared to work towards the needs within the community. “I believe we will continue to see the population of our community grow, and with the expansion planned for the west side of Highway 12, it will be important to work closely with our municipal partners at the City of Martensville and our provincial partners at the Ministry of Education in planning how to best manage this growth for families with children in schools and create the best opportunities to address the educational needs of all Martensville children.”

Another goal that Hope acknowledged was funding within the school division, as Prairie Spirit School Division is the fourth largest in the province. “In 2015 the Province implemented a new funding distribution model which disadvantaged Prairie Spirit in a number of ways. As it had always done, the Board of Education strongly advocated to the government, outlining the impacts this has had on our Division. The Board of Education continues to be a strong voice at the provincial level. As the representative for the community of Martensville, it would be my goal to continue to be a strong voice for our community and our school division at the provincial level.”

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are several things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach, allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal

How Can You Help Prevent A Sewer Line Backup?

• Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Instead scrape out or pour cooking oil and grease into a container or plastic bag and dispose of it in your kitchen garbage.

• Do not dispose of large absorbent items like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes or feminine products, down the toilet. These are not items that disintegrate like toilet paper will, including “flushable” wipes. These products should be disposed of in your garbage.

• Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean-up any fallen fruit or discarded food items or litter.

• Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours.

Civic Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic- What You Should Know!

Theft and Weapons Charges Laid After Arrest of 25-Year-Old Martensville Man Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Thanks to information obtained from the public, RCMP arrested 25-year-old Dayton Gavin of Martensville on November 4th after receiving information regarding an increase in local bicycle thefts. The arrest took place in the 500 block of 1st Street South in Martensville.

Sergeant Curtis Little of the Martensville RCMP stated that the RCMP had received complaints this past October regarding theft of bicycles in the area and through information from the community, they were able to follow leads and in this case, were able to identify someone as a result. Gavin was arrested in mid-October and released on conditions into the community.

RCMP then began receiving more calls regarding additional theft of bicycles in the area and with more information that came forward; they conducted an investigation and were able to identify the same person being responsible for a number of bicycle thefts in and around Martensville.

“We were seeing an increase in theft, which is one of the reasons why we were paying attention to it. There is always a one-off, but there was a number of thefts in and around Martensville, so we suspected it was a person or persons that were involved in doing this and a greater scale than a one-time situation. That was of concern to us and something that we were paying attention to,” Little said.

Gavin was arrested by Martensville RCMP on November 4th and is currently facing a number of charges including; possession of property obtained by crime – theft under or equal to $5000, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose as well as multiple counts of failure to comply with an undertaking. The suspect was remanded and scheduled to appear in court on November 5th; however, Little did not have information regarding the court outcome at this time.

Little stated that there was another suspect initially involved with the first incident that RCMP are looking into; however, no further information could be provided.

Due to the recent weather conditions, bicycles will likely be stored away until spring, but Little reminds the public to ensure their property is kept safe. “Ensure your property is locked away in a safe location and pay attention out there. If you see people doing things that appear suspicious, call us. We always accept calls like that because quite often in cases like that, it gives us information to look into and can turn up suspects and other investigative leads that help us to solve criminal offences. Thank you to residents for the information they provide us because it is always helpful. It is a partnership in a lot of ways and we appreciate the information that comes forward.”

At this point, Little noted that “There’s nothing I would be able to say that people should be overly concerned about at this point, but they should be paying attention to what is going on around them and that their property is locked away.”

With colder weather settled in now, residents are reminded not to leave their keys in an unlocked running vehicle to help prevent theft.

City Hall is Open, however with some guidelines currently in place. Continue to utilize online and contactless options when possible. Please do not visit City Hall if you are feeling unwell, experiencing flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with someone who is presumptive or tested positive for COVID-19.

Residents and Customers are encouraged to carry out transactions electronically such as online banking, preauthorized payments or TIPPS. Cheques may also be dropped off in the drop slot at City Hall.

Deadline for payment of Property Taxes was October 30th The City had implemented a number of measures to assist property owners and businesses during the pandemic, including extending the Property Tax deadline from July 31st to October 30th. Property Taxes are now due with interest charges on overdue accounts now accruing.

City Crews Hard at Work Clearing Roadways As Quickly As Possible Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Winter is officially here and within a matter of days, Saskatchewan residents went from enjoying warm November weather to digging ourselves out of our homes. With approximately 35cms of snow falling in Saskatoon and surrounding areas, along with strong winds that created drifts up to four feet high in some places, many highways and municipal roads across the province became impassable, including roadways within Martensville.

City of Martensville Public Works crews were out clearing roads on Saturday, November 7 and again on Sunday, November 8 until conditions gave almost zero visibility.

Following suppertime on Sunday, crews were back at it and working late into the night to keep the main roads open.

On Monday, November 9, crews worked a 12-15 hour shift, working as late as possible. In addition, the City of Martensville brought in some contracted trucking and had rental equipment to help get roads cleared as quickly as possible. Tuesday saw another full day of work around the city, and on Remembrance Day, there will be a full crew on hand continuing the hard work of clearing the roadways.

“We are doing as much as we can with what we have and we are hoping to get it all picked up sooner rather than later. Our main goal on Monday was to get every single street at least one passable driving lane for emergency vehicles so they could get to every single house. We realize that people may not have been able to get out of their driveways, but as of right now, we have approximately 80% of roads that have at least some sort of path going through it. We are trying to get passes down some alleys as well so people can get out of their garages,” Scott Loyns, City of Martensville Engineer explained.

With these extraordinary circumstances that we are in, it is important to remember to remain patient and have understanding that these things don’t get cleaned up overnight.

Crews are working tirelessly and can only haul so much snow at a time. “We are trying to work with what we have and do the best we can as fast as we can,” Loyns said.

In order to help expedite this process, Loyns stated that if residents are able to move vehicles off of the streets, it would help immensely. “When the crews are out and about, they are able to get more of the snow off of the street when they don’t have to go around vehicles. They aren’t able to get it all when vehicles are in the way; however we do understand that there are lots of vehicles trapped under snow.”

Additionally when clearing driveways and sidewalks, please try to refrain from moving snow into the streets. “If we have already done a street and people move snow

into it, it increases the amount of time it takes to complete the roads if we need to do them twice. With the amount of snow, it makes it difficult to keep driveways clear and if people add to it, it makes it that much more difficult,” Loyns explained.

Although the weekend snowstorm created difficult challenges for residents, one thing was made clear through this and that was the fact that people come together to help one another in tough times. Through the blizzard, there were people offering their services to help others that had gotten their vehicles stuck in the snow. On Monday, social media was filled with images and stories about “snow angels” helping clear sidewalks and driveways for their neighbors, proving that we truly are in this together!

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

Local Lions Club Accepting Donations of Bottles and Cans For Dog Guide Program Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This year has created many struggles for people, along with organizations.

With COVID-19 restrictions in place, many local service groups including the Martensville & District Lions Club have been unable to host their usual events that help to raise money throughout the year.

One of the biggest fundraisers that the Martensville & District Lions Club hosts each year is the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, which helps to raise money for a local resident to get a much-needed dog guide at no cost to them. There are several different types of dog guides, including; Canine Vision for people who are blind or visually impaired, Hearing for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Autism Assistance for children who have autism spectrum disorder, Service for people who have a physical or medical disability, Seizure Response for people who have epilepsy, Diabetic Alert for people who have diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness and Facility Support for professional agencies assisting individuals in traumatic situations.

“COVID-19 has crippled most fundraising this year and all fundraising/ raffles have been cancelled locally, as well as provincially and/or nationally. This year, our Dog Guide Walk had to be held virtually and only raised about 30% of normal, which was the same nationwide,” Doug Ward of the local Lions Club stated.

“Our training centre still has all the future dog guides, both puppies and older to train and raise. Hopefully they can keep producing about 300 new dog guides annually and get them to the recipients,” Ward added.

To help raise money that will be used towards the Dog Guide program, the Lions Club will be accepting donations of bottles and cans. Those interested in donating can contact Doug at (306) 494-8914 or Marie at (306) 290-6766 and someone can come pick them up. Plans are in place to also have a Drop & Go account set up at Sarcan later this week.

SPORTS Osczevski Breaks Personal Record At Strongman Competition Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

Aaron Osczevski, formerly of Martensville, competed in the 5th annual Shellshock fundraiser (Shellshock 5), organized by Misfit Powerlifting and Strength owner Caroline Lyonnais in Edmonton, AB. This event helps to raise funds to provide mental health support to military, first responders and front line workers.

In a social media post, Lyonnais explained that, “Shellshock 5 holds one of the biggest Canadian platforms to numerous athlete's around Canada, but it also created the one weekend where numerous Misfit athlete's and our gym members get to step on one platform together from two different sports.”

When speaking to the Martensville Messenger, Osczevski stated that this event is a powerlifting meet and strongman record breaker.

Osczevski competed in the CAASA (Canadian Alliance of Amateur Strength Athletes) record breaker event. The event consisted of three implement lifts: Block Press, Axle Deadlift, and Rolling Thunder Grip challenge.

“Each athlete had three attempts at each implement and I pressed a 100kg block, Deadlifted 302kg, which was a personal record, and pulled a 90kg rolling thunder,” said Osczevski.

This was the second show in Osczevski’s strongman career. He had two years of rehabbing a torn quad, and had a late start in the season due to COVID-19.

Support at home definitely isn’t an issue, as Osczevski’s wife Jackie is not only his coach, but also the number one professional strongwoman in Canada. “Jackie has prepped me for strongman via her personal online programming.” martensville messenger - OCtOBer 1, 2020 - Page 5 Due to COVID-19 restrictions, spectators were not permitted in the building during the competition; however, Jackie volunteered to referee the woman’s side of the strongman competition so she could be allowed in the building.

Moe Wise To Tell Us To Mask Up

The decision to order those in the three biggest cities to mask up was not an easy one. Full marks to Premier Scott Moe and Saskatchewan Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab for making it.

Notwithstanding the delay in making this call that likely could have come sooner, both deserve credit for making the tough call to implement 28-day mask-wearing order in public spaces in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert that went into effect on Friday. Further credit should go to both of them for strongly encouraging mask use everywhere in the province, while refraining from making this a province-wide order. Also, it was wise to reduce household gatherings to 10 people from 15.

Here’s why these measures are important to Saskatchewan right now:

As of Tuesday, November 10th, the total COVID-19 cases hit 3,373 with 842 active cases. Yes, 2,506 have recovered, but 25 have died from a virus for which there is no vaccine. How soon a vaccine will be developed or whether one will be developed at all remains the question.

The problem that Moe and Shabab have in issuing such an order is really two-fold. The first is somewhat of Moe’s own political making in that he did frame additional and more stringent measures imposed by government as viewed as going backwards — something that Moe insisted he would not do.

“We will not have to have an economy-wide shut down. We understand the virus much better,” Moe said near the end of last month’s general election campaign.

Some clearly interpret mask order as a step backwards. It isn’t. Really, it enhances an economic recovery because many nationwide retailers have a national or international policy on mask use in their premises, it’s required in a lot of stores. What last week’s announcement really does is level the playing field for all retailers, including smaller ones who simply wanted to do the right thing by doing their part to stop the virus spread and let us make no mistake that masks do stop the virus spread.

The second big problem for Moe and Shahab implementing anything related to masks is all the misinformation on mask-use wrapped in a lot of politics.

It is rather easy to wonder the Internet or YouTube and find some bizarre source of pseudoscience or ones that are deliberately false preaching that masks are even ineffective or even contributing to the spread.

Please, talk to a doctor instead. Any family doctor you entrust with your health will tell you differently. Sadly, far too many are more eager to listen to rhetoric generated from south of the border. Some of them eagerly tie it to the federal Liberal government of Justin Trudeau, which is truly bizarre.

There are umpteen legitimate reasons for you to be peeved at Trudeau and the federal Liberals. This isn’t one of them.

We need to instead focus on where we are headed in this fight because the growth in COVID-19 cases suggests we are not in a good place. Perhaps we don’t have the problems of our neighbours in Manitoba that saw total cases quadruple in Manitoba during October or in that they have nine times as many cases despite only four times the population, but our numbers show we have our own problems with rapidly rising cases in this second wave.

It took us until May 6 (54 days to hit 500 cases, until July 22 (67 more days) to hit 1,000 cases, until Aug. 12 (21 more days to hit 1,500 cases and until Oct. 8 (56 more days) to hit 2,000 cases. However it then took only 14 more days to hit 2,500 (Oct 22), and eight more days to hit 3,000 (Oct. 30).

This is not where we need to be. Mask up — not just when you are in the cities but whenever you go out.

Martensville McDonald’s Closes Martensville High Temporarily After Employee School Moves Tests Positive For COVID-19 to Level 4 After

In a release received from McDonald’s Canada, it was stated on November 8, an employee Multiple COVID Cases that from the Martensville McDonald’s location reported that they tested positive for COVID-19.

In a media release sent on Tuesday, November 10th, Prairie Spirit School Division explained that a case of COVID-19 had been reported in an individual within Colonsay School, as well as a number of individuals at Martensville High School (MHS).

It was noted that the school communities had been informed; however to protect privacy, no details would be shared with the public.

Later that same day, a letter was sent to families with students attending MHS that explained that following a consultation with the Medical Health Officer and the Ministry of Education, a decision had been made to move MHS to Level 4 in the Saskatchewan Safe Schools Plan.

Due to this, effective immediately, all in-person classes at MHS will be moving online until November 23.

As of November 23, the school will then move to Level 3, which will continue until the Christmas break.

All plans will depend on further direction and information from the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“We all have a shared responsibility to decrease the risk of COVID-19 entering schools. Our school plans contain many important measures, processes and protocols which add layers of protection for students and staff,” the release stated.

Students and families within the Prairie Spirit School Division are reminded to be diligent in performing the daily health screening, staying home if ill, calling HealthLine 811 if exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, practicing proper hygiene, maintaining physical distancing as much as possible, wearing a mask when appropriate and doing everything possible to keep one another safe.

All crew members who may have been in close contact with the employee have been asked to self-quarantine until further information is available. The employee worked their last shift on November 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

For guests that visited the restaurant on November 4th, McDonald’s Canada recommends following directions from the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“We continue to work with local health authorities to support our people and our guests, and look forward to getting back to serving our community as soon as we can.”

Jack Facca Brings Canadian Music Legacy to Martensville Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Jack Facca moved to Martensville with his family approximately three years ago, and with them, they brought a part of Canada’s music legacy that many Saskatchewan people are likely unaware of.

Fury Guitars was created by Glenn McDougall in 1962 and ran out of his home in Saskatoon until his passing in 2017. McDougall was the first electric guitar manufacturer in Canada.

Music has always been a big part of Jack Facca’s life. It wasn’t something that he found as he got older, instead it was something that he was born into. Growing up in Wiseton, Saskatchewan as the sixth of seven children, Facca watched his older brothers making music and playing gigs from a very young age. By the time he was 16; Facca had his first band and within a couple years, moved to Saskatoon where he was playing with bands as lead guitarist. Facca noted that his biggest gig was opening for Harlequin and Prism at Centennial Auditorium.

One of the bands that Facca was playing had him playing alongside Kirt McDougall, who was Glenn McDougall’s son and as he and Kirt became friends, Facca also got to know Glenn. “A number of years before Kirt introduced me to Glenn, I had actually met him as I was looking for a new career change. When I went to see him, I found out that Canada’s first electric guitar manufacturer was a one-man show,” Facca said. That first visit with Glenn ended up being 6.5 hours long and after Jack began playing in a band with Kirt, the friendship between him and Glenn continued to grow over the years. “We really hit it off. We were spending a lot of time in the shop, we would go for coffee and suppers and just talk. I just wish that I had gotten to know him more when I first met him all those years ago.”

In the fall of 2016, Glenn was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away in February of 2017 – only days short of his 80th birthday.

Over the years, Glenn built thousands of guitars with the Fury name. “Glenn was a genius and you don’t meet too many of those in your lifetime. He did it all, he designed them, he built them, and he painted and did all of the buffing and polishing. The thing about him is that he should have been a multi-millionaire, but he decided to be more of an artist than a business man. He did what he loved and he produced a quality instrument every single time,” Facca explained. In addition to creating thousands of guitars over the years, Glenn also made the machines that he used to make the parts for the guitars. “I called him Da Vinci. He was an inventor and a master craftsman.”

In late 2016, Glenn asked Facca to be in a partnership with him; however due to a career change taking place at that time, Facca felt that he wasn’t ready for something like that at the moment. “I thought about it and being very passionate about guitars myself, once Glenn ended up going into the hospital, there was a burning in me that told me if I didn’t tell him that I wanted to build guitars, and if he didn’t hear that from me, I would have regretted it. When I did tell him that that’s what I wanted to do, he lit up like a lightbulb,” Facca stated.

Since Glenn’s passing, Facca has been slowly getting things ready as he prepares to re-open Fury Guitars. The plan is to open the doors to the business on July 1st, 2022, which marks the 60th anniversary for Fury Guitars. Once open, the business will be based out of Martensville.

“I am pretty excited about everything, although those are some really big shoes to fill. I know that I have a lot to learn, but I am confident that I am going to make this work.

There are thousands of guitars out there and the owners have nowhere to get replacement parts because they were all built by one guy. It isn’t something you can just walk into your local store and pick up.”

Once open, Facca plans to start designing his own instruments, as well as finish some of Glenn’s creations that were not quite complete. These guitars will have a special serial number with a GM on them, and anything built by Facca afterwards will include a PGM serial number (Post Glenn McDougall). “This way people will know that they were final assembled after his passing. Anything that I design will look different than what Glenn built. In the future, history will know that Glenn’s work was his and mine will be mine.”

When he isn’t playing music, Facca is a Journeyman Machinist by trade, and nowadays spends his days working as a Quality Inspector. Although his time outside of his full-time job is often spent preparing for the re-opening of Fury Guitars, Facca still finds the time to create music and released an album with his duo partner David Sanders, from their band Slick Gizmo on July 1st of this year. Their album can be found on Spotify, YouTube, etc. “I still want to keep playing music. I won’t be doing the gigs that I used to do because of the business now, but I still want to write and record.”

At this point, the plan is to keep the business small, as Facca said he isn’t trying to take the world by storm, and instead just wants to humbly build guitars and keep the quality and the Fury name alive.

For those that wish to learn more about Glenn McDougall, there is currently a documentary about his legacy being filmed by Lisa Unrau. “I am looking forward to the documentary. Glenn deserves to be on the map. He was a pioneer for his time. There was no internet back then to learn from, he did it all on his own and that first guitar that he made is just as good as any of the guitars you would pick up today.”

“It really is an honour that I had the opportunity to get to know Glenn and become friends with him and that he asked me to do this. I am so thankful to the McDougall family for this opportunity. There is no failure here. It is all about providing a quality instrument for people and hopefully it brings out the best in them, whether it be writing a song, or just having fun. If it makes them want to pick up an instrument and Fury is their choice, that would great!”

Saskatchewan Businesses Not Utilizing Available Federal Funding Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This year, many businesses have undergone various challenges due to COVID-19, whether it be having to close due to restrictions put in place earlier this year, seeing less revenue in sales due to customers having less income, limiting their capacity to follow restrictions after re-opening and many others.

Both the Federal and Provincial governments put multiple options in place to help businesses financially during these uncertain times. Reports from the federal government on the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program indicate that Saskatchewan businesses have only accessed 1.7% of the allocated dollars through the CEWS program alone.

According to information provided by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, our province consists of 3.11% of the Canadian population, which means that Saskatchewan businesses are shorted by approximately $185 million and in some cases, time is running out for access to CEWS and other federal support programs.

With this in mind, the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the experts at MNP to deliver a free step-bystep tutorial that will walk you through the available Federal support programs and how to apply.
