Buster Days Will Include Fun For All Ages Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

One of the most anticipated events in Martensville is taking place this weekend, and it is sure to be a fun-filled weekend for all ages. Buster Days weekend is always chock full of fun activities and events and judging by the schedule of events, this year is sure to be a blast.

“There will be a lot of the usual activities, but they are good old fashioned classics that everyone enjoys. We do have a few new additions that we are really excited about and the goal is always to cater to everyone and ensure everyone has something to do and to ensure there are no barriers for people to participate,” Jessica Loran, City of Martensville Program Coordinator II, said.

Friday, May 31st will be the kick off to the festivities and will include the beginning of the weekend long Slo-Pitch tournament, a Family Swim Night, Youth Swim Night, Family Movie Night, Kinsmen Club Comedy Night and the ever-popular fireworks show in Kinsmen Park.

Saturday will begin with a pancake breakfast and car show at North Ridge Community Centre (NRCC) followed by Fitness in the Park, a road hockey tournament, parade (south side route), fishing derby, food trucks, inflatables, games and many other activities at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP).

On Sunday, there will be a church service from 11am-12pm at NRCC, which will be followed with a family picnic and bingo. Once again, there will be food trucks, inflatables, a petting zoo and games at the MAP, as well as the money pit, which will take place at 1pm and give children the chance to search through a sand pit filled with $300 in change. There will also be fun activities at the Kyle Syrenne Skate Park starting at 2pm.

In previous years, all of the activities took place within Kinsmen Park, but Loran explained that things have changed in recent years. “We decided that it works better to have the inflatables inside because it is impossible to predict Saskatchewan weather. This way, we can ensure that everyone can enjoy them for the entire weekend. We just want everyone to have a good time.”

Buster Days is organized by a group of community volunteers and is possible through the support of numerous sponsors; City of Martensville, Saskatchewan Lotteries, Kinsmen Club, North Ridge Developments, North Prairie Developments, Canadian Tire, Lakeview Insurance, Offroad Exteriors, and FreeWay Delivery Service. Various service groups from Martensville contribute their time to help run the event throughout the weekend, and in return, the Buster Days Committee provides an honorarium for the groups that participated following the event. “By supporting Buster Days, you are helping to support the community because everything made from the event goes directly back into the community. It really does cater to all parts of the community,” Loran explained.

For Loran, it will be her first Buster Days weekend, and the excitement is palpable.

“I have been counting down the days and absolutely cannot wait. It is going to be so much fun and I think everyone should come check it out because there will be so many fun options. This year, we have a new company bringing the inflatables, so those will be all new, we will have an adult version of ‘Hungry, Hungry Hippos’, rideable stuffies that can be raced on the MAP track and much more.”

Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at the MAP until May 30th for $40, a savings of $10. These passes gain you full weekend access to the inflatables, laser tag and gaming truck, rideable stuffed animals and carnival games punch card.

Save Water and Save on Your Utility Bills!

Water Conservation Tips

• Water your lawn deeply, but not more than once a week. During periods of extended rain, water even less frequently.

• Water new lawns every other day until the grass reaches 5 cm; then water less frequently.

• Set a tuna can in each of your sprinkler zones and time how long it takes to fill it with water. That’s how long you should run your sprinkler once a week if your lawn is dry.

• Use drip irrigation and/or sprinkler systems that are timed to turn on and off automatically.

Remember to turn them off if it’s raining.

• Don’t water your lawn during the hottest time of the day. Instead, water early in the morning or in the evening. Don’t water when it’s rainy or windy.

• Check the sprinkler position to make sure you don’t waste water by watering the street, sidewalks or driveway.

• Xeriscape Landscaping – Group plants according to their watering needs. Plant watersaving plants, trees and shrubs. Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. All of this can save 10-35 litres of water per minute.

• When mowing your lawn, only cut the top 1/3 of the grass and leave clippings behind.

They will help the soil retain moisture and provide natural fertilizer.

• Wash your car at the car wash. Washing at home with a hose for ten minutes uses 300 litres of water and sends soap, oil and other chemicals to the river through storm drains.

At a car wash, run-off is captured and disposed of properly.

• Use a broom when cleaning your driveway or walkway. Washing with a hose uses almost 200 litres of water.

Indoor Water Conservation Tips • When you want a drink, don’t let the water run until it is cold. Instead, refrigerate a jug of tap water and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t let the tap run when rinsing dishes or washing fruit and vegetables and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Instead, scrape off food first using a spatula. Soak very dirty pans and dishes before washing.

• Run the dishwasher only when it’s fully loaded and save 70-190 litres of water with each load you eliminate.

• Repair any leaks. Turn faucets off firmly. Check and replace any worn out fixtures, washers, O-rings and hose connections.

• Avoid using garbage disposals. Disposals require lots of water to operate properly.

Instead, start a compost pile.

• Save as much as 10 litres of water per minute with a low-flow showerhead.

• Don’t overfill and fill less than a full bath. Better yet, you’ll save water by taking a short shower instead.

• Replace an old toilet with a water-efficient model and save as much as 14 litres of water per flush and 70 litres per person, per day • Check for leaks in your toilet by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank.

Coloring will appear in the toilet bowl if it’s leaking.

• Run the washing machine only when it’s fully loaded. Each load you eliminate saves 70-190 litres of water.

• Check washing machine hoses for cracks that could result in leaks.

• Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks. Read the water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.

Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce Continues to Gain Exposure in the Region

The Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) has been gaining more and more exposure since the amalgamation between the Martensville and Warman Chambers of Commerce took place in November of 2017, making them the fifth largest Chamber of Commerce within the province.

On April 1st, the PSCC moved into a new office space located at 101 Klassen Street in Warman. “It has been a great move for us, and has really increased our exposure to the region. We are starting to see more walkin traffic, more inquires and more general visibility for the Chamber and what we do,” PSCC Executive Director Jaimie Malmgren said. Currently, the PSCC Board consists of 12 members, and having the new space provides a place for them to meet regularly.

Following the Warman Martensville and Region Business Excellence Awards (WMBEXA), which is the PSCC signature event, the board is already making plans on how to improve upon the popular gala. This year, approximately 350 people attended WMBEXA, which was held in Martensville on May 3rd. This year marked the fourth year for the event, and as they head into the fifth

year, plans are in place to add a new awards category to the event. “We haven’t made any definitive plans yet, but we are excited about some different ideas and things we can do to keep it new and fresh, surprise people and keep them coming back,” stated Malmgren.

On May 30th, the PSCC will be hosting an open house at their new location and are inviting businesses and community members to stop in and also encouraging business members to drop off business cards, as they plan to display their member information. “If people come into the office looking for a specific service or product, we want to help promote our local businesses.”

In order to gain more information on what residents within the region would like to see available to them, the PSCC is currently conducting a Consumer Spending Survery. “We are hoping that anyone that lives within the Warman, Martensville and Osler area will take a few minutes to complete ten short questions and it will help us to understand what gaps there are in our region, better inform businesses as to if there are minor tweaks that can be made when it comes to store hours, products of services they are providing, convenience, and basically

how to better serve the community,” Malmgren explained.

VHS Celebrates Spring

Venture Heights Elementary School hosted their annual Spring Festival on Thursday, May 23 from 4:40pm-7:30pm. The event provided a wide variety of fun for everyone including; a bouncy obstacle course, balloon animals, cake-walk game, Bingo, silent auction items and much more.

A total of 84 parent volunteers helped to ensure the event was a success once again!

All funds raised from the event will be used to help support extra-curricular programming and activities.

VMS Families Donate to Free Pantry

Grade 6 students from Valley Manor Elementary School hosted a Family Movie Night on Thursday, May 16th. Those attending were treated to the movie ‘Spider Man: Into the Spiderverse’ on a big screen in the school gymnasium. Admission to the movie was a donation of one non-perishable food item per person. There was also a concession available selling pop, chips and candy bags for $1.00 each. Proceeds from the concession will be used towards the Grade 6 year-end field trip. A total of eight boxes of food were collected for the Martensville Free Pantry through this event.

Annual Lion’s Dog Walk Continues to Grow Cadderly Kingsbury, Martensville Messenger

From tiny Chihuahuas to not-so-tiny Bulldogs, all types of four-legged friends came out to the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, organized by the Martensville & District Lions Club on Sunday, May 26th. The purpose of the walk is to help raise money to fund the training for dog guides for vision, hearing, seizure response, service, autism assistance and diabetic alert. Funds raised through the country wide event will be used to help support families obtain a much needed dog guide at no cost to the recipient.

The event, which took place in Lion’s Park kicked off with registration at 2pm, followed by the walk at 3pm, with a BBQ held shortly after. Approximately 50 dogs and 100 people gathered to help support this incredible event.

Martensville & District Lions Club Secretary Doug Ward explained that, “We have plans to bring a dog guide to a family in Martensville later this year. It is a hearing dog and we hope that it can happen soon.” The family that Ward noted was in attendance to help support the event.

According to Ward, the Lions Club provided over 200 dogs for families last year and he is hoping to see that number continue to grow. “I understand that the facilities have grown and expanded, so there will be even more dog guides in the future, which is really exciting news.”

This year marked the fifth annual walk in Martensville, and Ward is hopeful that the exposure and support for the event will continue to grow so they can help raise more money each year. With the increase in participants, that looks promising. “It is a great experience to be a part of this. The Lions Club motto is ‘We Serve’ and it means that we help out people that need assistance.

The dog walk is just one of the avenues that we do. We just want to be able to help out the people in our area,” Ward added.

As of May 28th, the event brought in over $16,000 and donations continue to come in. “I am more than pleased and excited about getting future guide dogs in our area. I would like to extend a special thank you to all of my fellow Lions Club members, my family and all who donated or contributed to the walk,” said Ward.

City of Martensville Shows Appreciation For Community Volunteers

The City of Martensville will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Event on Wednesday, June 19th at the North Ridge Community Centre from 5pm-7pm.

In the past, the City has had a Volunteer of the Year program that was done through a nomination process, but this is the first time something has been done to try to recognize all volunteers in the community,” Ted Schaeffer, City of Martensville Recreation & Community Services Director, explained.

The idea behind the event was suggested by Council as a way to celebrate the numerous volunteers that contribute their time to our community. “Volunteers are vital to the community. Their hard work and dedication is critical in the delivery of numerous sports, recreation, cultural and social programs and services throughout the community. They make our community a better place to live,” Schaeffer added.

The event will be open to all volunteers within the community of Martensville and will begin with a speech from Mayor Kent Muench and will then include a come and go set up complete with pulled pork, cake and beverages.

Positive Steel Outcome May Not Happen Elsewhere

We recently received some great trade news on the steel trading front. Now, if only the news could be as good on the canola and oil trading front. Unfortunately, solutions to these issues may take considerably tougher to fix.

The good news is that U.S.’s 25-per-cent duty on Canadian steel and 10-per-cent duty on Canadian steel that was imposed by President Donald Trump nearly a year ago have now been lifted came as welcomed relief. This is very good news right here in Saskatchewan.

While aluminum is more of an issue in Quebec where low hydro electric rates make its production more feasible, steel is an issue that goes well beyond the Hamilton area.

Regina’s Evraz Steel, the old Ipsco that started out as Tommy Douglas Crown Corporation and later became a successful privatized enterprise, has long been a major contributor to Regina’s economy and the Saskatchewan economy as a whole. “It’s a weight lifted off their shoulders,” said Mike Day, president of USW 5890 after hearing of the news of Trump’s lifting of sanctions.

“It’s less stress. Everybody’s smiling.”

This was a hard-fought win that required the federal government to apply retaliatory measures on U.S. steel and aluminum and other key U.S. exports from states that happened to have Republican Senators supportive of Trump.

All it all, it was $16.6-billion in Canadian countermeasures against the Americans, but perhaps the biggest factor was the need for Trump to secure his much-vaunted United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). While the agreement was signed, it was not ratified, largely because of Canada’s legitimate frustrations over these steel tariffs that were applied over the paperthin notion of American national security.

It has been a year-long and often bitter fight with what’s become a very difficult Trump administration.

Truly, dealing with the Americans has not been easy for Canada or any nation, but as tough as it was to get these steel tariffs removed, other problems may be even tougher.

We likely have a bigger problem with China over canola and now other products and then there are the problems of our own making.

As bad as Trump and the protectionist Republicans have been, we are still dealing with a democracy that applies democratic principles to things like trade agreements.

Moreover, with the Canada-U.S. economy as integrated as it is, it was always exceedingly difficult for Americans to separate interests. Evraz, for example, has steel plants on both sides of the border. Steel for vehicles crosses the 49th parallel multiple times before becoming a car is finished.

Dealing with China is far more difficult and complex. As was addressed in this space earlier this month, of the 20.3 million tonnes of canola that Canada grew in 2018, 10.9 million tonnes came from Saskatchewan and about 40 per cent of that canola was exported to China that purchases about 60 per cent of all canola imports throughout the world.

While Premier Scott Moe has called for reciprocal trade action that proved successful in the U.S. steel dispute, there is not really the same opportunity with the Chinese. We have a massive trade deficit with China in the neighbourhood of $49 billion a year.

Let’s give credit where credit is due and respect that the federal Liberal government did a good job of limiting the steel trade war. Notwithstanding Conservative Opposition leader Andrew Scheer’s criticism, it’s hard to imagine how we could have fared much better, but let us also accept the federal government must do more to firm up trade relationships. We must focus on getting all products, including oil and gas, to market. We need to win these battles wherever and whenever we can and smart governments try to win these wars before they start.

SARCAN Recycling Celebrates Deserving Depots With 2019 Customer Service Awards

Each year, secret shoppers visit every SARCAN depot across Saskatchewan and rate the customer experience at those depots. The results create SARCAN’s annual Customer Service Awards. Depots are rated in terms of accuracy, cleanliness and customer service. The four depots with the highest ratings across those three categories are awarded a Depot of the Year award based on depot size, ranging from small to extra-large communities. Additionally, the depots with the highest ratings in the individual categories of accuracy, cleanliness, and customer service also receive an award based on that achievement.

Sean Collins, SARCAN’s Director of Collections said, “Our teams across Saskatchewan work hard to put our customers first,” adding, “These awards are an excellent way for us to recognize and celebrate all of the hard work our depots do every year towards creating a welcoming, clean, and friendly environment for our customers.”

Award recipients vary annually from SARCAN’s network of 72 locations province-wide. The awards were presented at an evening banquet during SARCAN’s annual Leadership Training.

Ladies Night Fundraiser Going Back to the 80’s Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The annual Martensville Ladies Night fundraiser was held on Saturday, May 25th at North Ridge Community Centre. Approximately 180 women attended the event, which was an 80’s theme this year. All money raised from the event will be going to the Saskatchewan Rett Syndrome Association and towards a scholarship for a Martensville High School graduate.

According to organizer Tracey Lengyel, the Ladies Night Fundraiser is the perfect opportunity to raise money for Rett Syndrome, as it is something that mainly affects females. “Rett Syndrome is a ABOVE: Tracey Lengyel and Paula Johnston. genetic error on the X chromosome, which affects all abilities. It is like having cerebral palsy and autism all mixed in, with no speech abilities. It is something you are born with, and it is often misdiagnosed until they get older and different traits become apparent,” Lengyel said. “I really feel that this ladies night fundraiser event is perfect for our girls as Rett Syndrome mainly affects girls and the evening is all about ladies supporting one another and having fun,” added Lengyel.

The Ladies Night Committee, which consists of four mothers of children with Rett Syndrome were happy to raise an estimated $8000 for the Rett Syndrome Association and will be providing a $500 scholarship to a female graduate this year. “This year was a learning year for us, but I think we did great. We had great guidance from past organizer Paula Johnston and we also had some great helpers this year too,” organizer Tracey Lengyel said.

Without the help and support of many individuals and businesses, Lengyel noted that this event would not have been the success that it was. “I would like to thank Bree, Lindsay, Wendy, Paula, Nicole, Tammi, Lexa, the awesome volunteer servers and bartenders. I would also like to thank Saboroso for a fantastic meal and The Gong Show for rocking it out all night with us!” Additionally, the Ladies Night Committee would like to thank West Jet, JP Massage, Mr. Mikes, Affinity Credit Union, Canadian Linen, The Martensville Messenger and for everyone else that contributed to the event. “Without these people, our event would not be successful. It really does take a village.”

The Stanley Cup Finals have FINALLY gotten started. After the St. Louis Blues defeated the San Jose Sharks in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday of last week there was a five day break before the Finals kicked off on Monday. The fans in Boston were buzzing as they had waited 10 full days since their team last played. Many thought that the rest would have a negative effect on the Bruins but that was only the case for the first period and a half. Boston found themselves down 2-0 early in the second period but found their legs and would outshoot the Blues 18-3 in the second period and tied the game going into the third. Five minutes into the final frame, Sean Kuraly would put the Bruins up 3-2 before Brad Marchand potted an empty netter to seal the deal. Boston took game one 4-2 with the second game going on Wednesday in Boston. Games three and four will be in St. Louis on June 1st and 3rd.

Team Canada’s miraculous run at the IIHF World Championships came to a crashing end in the gold medal game. However it almost ended sooner as the Canadians were down 2-1 to the Swiss in the quarter finals. Canada scored with 0.4 seconds left on the clock to send the game into overtime.

It was in the extra time that Mark Stone scored to send the Canadians to the Semi-Finals where they hammered the Czech Republic 5-1.

In the Gold Medal Game Canada was up Head Coach Positions Available in Martensville: against Finland who handed them their only loss of the Bantam and Midget AA Programs preliminary round way back on May 10th in their first game Martensville Minor Hockey is accepting applications for the upcoming of the tournament. The Finns 2019-20 Season: had their number again though Bantam AA Head Coach (1 position available) as they took down Canada 3-1 Midget AA Head Coach (1 position available) to win the Gold Medal.

Martensville Minor Hockey Association is currently accepting applications for the position of Head Coach of our Bantam AA & Midget AA programs for the upcoming 2019-2020 hockey season. Requirements include but are not limited to: - Strong hockey background in coaching, playing and evaluating - Experience coaching AA hockey is preferred but not required - Ability to inspire and motivate others

- Coach Certification as listed by SHA and Hockey Canada - Criminal Record Check The job duties include but are not limited to: - Prepare appropriate plans for each practice and provide appropriate communication to coaching staff prior to practice.

- Coach the team in all games and practices

- Hold tryouts and evaluate players and fill roster - Establish rules for the team and oversee the supervision of the players - Set and enforce standards to foster a positive environment for all players - Time commitment: 1-2 practice/week, 1-3 games/week, plus tournaments and off-ice programming.
