SPORTS Wildcats Have Good Year Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger
The Female Bantam Warman Wildcats started slow this year but finished with points in 11 out of 17 games. Coach Lee Morelli stated, “I was told from other league coaches we were the most improved team in the Sask Female Hockey League North Division finishing 6th out of 10 teams.” There were girls from 13 different towns such as; Delisle, Davidson, Viscount, Spiritwood and more. According to Morelli, the girls “all got along great and spent the season as more of a family than a team.” The team played one tournament in Swift Current this season. Although they played well and had a lot of fun, they did not place. This year, three girls from Martensville played with the Wildcats; Kaylee Ayotte, Taelyr Ballard and Dylan Taggart. “The highlight for the season would be beating Hague out in the survivor series playoff to advance to the second round. Also that the girls never gave up, we made plenty of third period comebacks this season,” Morelli added. An awards ceremony was held on April 10, with awards going to:

In the other game seven, Washington and Carolina would need two overtime periods before a winner emerged. Brock McGinn of the Carolina Hurricanes scored 11 minutes into the second overtime to eliminate the defending Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals and move on to play the New York Islanders. Now into the second round of the playoffs Carolina has a 2-0 series lead over New York who were well rested after sweeping Pittsburgh in round one. This series has been a battle of goaltenders so far with the first game ending 1-0 in overtime for the Canes. Carolina fans had a scare in game two though when starting goalie Petr Mrazek went down with an injury in the second period with the Hurricanes down 1-0. Their fear was for nothing though as back-up goalie Curtis McElhinney shut the door and watched Carolina rally for two quick goals in the third and take a 2-1 win and a 2-0 series lead. The series shifts to Carolina on May 1st as the Islanders look to bounce back and avoid going down 3-0 in the series. That was the only series in round two that wasn’t tied 1-1 after the first two games. Colorado and San Jose split their first two games with the Sharks taking game one 5-2 and the Avalanche rebounding in game two with a 4-3 victory. The teams headed to Denver for game three where San Jose came up on top with a win of 4-2 leading the series 2-1. Recently nominated for the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year, goaltender Jordan Binnington has stayed hot and has helped the St. Louis Blues get their 2-1 series lead over the Dallas Stars. The Blues took game one 3-2 at home but Dallas evened the series with a 4-2 win in game two. St. Louis then improved to 4-0 on the road in these playoffs with a 4-3 win in Dallas. The Stars hope to even the series at home in game 4 on May 1st. In what has been the tightest series in the second round both of the first two games have needed overtime. Boston took game one and handed Columbus their first loss of the post-season 3-2 in Boston. The Blue Jackets would then even the series with a 3-2 overtime win of their own in game two. Game three was in Columbus where the fans were absolutely rocking. Columbus held off a late surge by the Bruins and hung on to a 2-1 win and now have a 2-1 series lead with game four in Columbus on May 2nd.

Group Effort Helps Find Three Furry Friends From Mexico New Homes Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
Kristine O’Brien, the owner/operator of Paws Republic Boarding, Training & Grooming Centre in Martensville has an undeniable passion for animals. That is abundantly clear given the career choice that she made; however, O’Brien recently took that passion to a new level while on vacation in Mexico. For the first time in years, O’Brien and her husband packed their bags to head to Los Cabos for a much needed getaway. After five days of sunshine and relaxation, O’Brien found herself falling into old habits. “I started habitually looking into local rescue facilities and I found a website about the Los Cabos Humane Society. As I was looking through the site, I saw that they have worked with rescues out of Canada before, so I thought there might be a potential ABOVE: Mari, one of the dogs brought back from Mexico is still available for to bring a couple of dogs back with us to rescue adoption through Saskatoon Small Dog them,” O’Brien explained. Rescue. The next day, O’Brien and her husband headed to the humane society to take a look at the animals that were available for adoption. “We made a call to Size Small Dog Rescue in Saskatchewan to see if they would be willing to take the dogs on and find foster homes willing to take them and decided that if we had the support bringing them back, then we would go ahead with the plan,” added O’Brien. The airline required 48 hours notice prior to bringing a dog on the plane, so O’Brien had to move fast and began to get the plan in place. Upon visiting the humane society, O’Brien was shown a group of five pugs that had been rescued from a neglectful home, with some in rough shape. “Their nails were growing into the pads of their feet, some had eye infections, but there were two that stood out to us. They were friendly, they were social with other dogs and their teeth were good; all things to look for when finding an adoptable dog.” One of the two pugs was blind in one eye, but that didn’t slow him down for an instant. An added bonus to the two dogs that were already bonded was that they could both fit into one crate, as the airline charges by crate, not by dog. Additionally, O’Brien noticed Mari, who was a two year old female that had a lot of love to give. Mari was found on the streets of Mexico and has a section of missing hair on her side due to an unknown cause; however, is in great health. All three dogs had been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and treated for fleas and ticks. “The one thing you never know is how they will be with cats and kids, so I relied on my trainer instinct and we narrowed it down to the three dogs. After paying the required fees, purchasing crates and organizing things back home, we were on our way.” On the journey to bring them back to Martensville, O’Brien acknowledged that it could not have happened without the support of numerous volunteers. “It was a lot of people all coming together between the humane society, us coordinating, Size Small Dog Rescue, a fellow trainer friend in Edmonton that kept the dogs for a night and helped assess them before we even brought them home, a volunteer driving them from Edmonton to Saskatoon, foster homes and Paws Republic. It was a group effort and we are so thrilled to have so many amazing people in our lives.” Choco and Kobe, the two pugs, have already been adopted by a family that could not be happier to have the two dogs added to their family. Hazel, one of the new owners, stated that the family has had pugs for years and is therefore familiar with the breed. Following a standard two week waiting period, the family will bring the two pugs into their home for a one week trial period. “I know the trial will not be a problem. We just met Choco and Kobe and are already in love with them. We can’t wait for them to join our family,” Hazel said. “Thank you to everyone that was involved in helping to orchestrate this crazy adventure of mine. My advice to anyone that is travelling anywhere is that there are rescues everywhere you go, and they are all in need of support. You don’t necessarily have to come home with dogs like I did, but even taking a bag of food can go a long way,” said O’Brien. Next time the couple takes a trip, O’Brien said she could see herself bringing dogs home again; however, would prefer to be more prepared. “It was a bit of a whirlwind and it is not cheap to bring them home, but the stars aligned and it all worked out. Seeing the joy that was created through this was such an amazing feeling and I am fully aware that there are many rescues in the province that need support as well, and that is never something that I would discourage. There are dogs that need rescue everywhere, we just decided to take the opportunity as it came and it worked out really well!” Mari is still available for adoption, and more information as well as updates can be found by visiting the ‘Paws Republic Boarding, Training & Grooming Centre’.

Saturday Fundraiser Being Held in Support of Mothers Empowering Mothers
Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
A special event will be taking place in Martensville this weekend at the North Ridge Community Centre. Rosette Events will be hosting ‘Tulips and Water Lilies’, a fundraiser set up to raise money for Mothers Empowering Mothers (MEM), a post-partum support group for Saskatoon and area. The group was formed in 2017 by postpartum professionals to provide support to women experiencing post-partum difficulties such as depression or anxiety, birth trauma, or other disorders related to maternal mental health. The services they provide help give women their village back, and include monthly post-partum support group meetings, post-partum doulas, lactation and breast feeding support, baby wearing education and more.
The event will run from 10am-4pm on Saturday, May 4th, and admission will be by donation to MEM. In addition, there will be a raffle with numerous incredible prize options, with all tickets sales being donated to MEM. There will be a variety of family-oriented activities taking place throughout the day such as a Sask Reptile Show at 1:30pm, a visit from Snow White and a Superhero between 1pm and 3pm, a Babywearing Basics with Raising a Little at 11am and Taming Tantrums with Elemental Baby Sleep Consultant at 3pm. There will also be a toddler play area sponsored by Uffda Play and free Mother’s Day photos from Trew Moments Photography available. This is the first year for Tulips and Water Lilies; however, Rosette Events began hosting events last fall as non-profit, third-party fundraising for charities. “I organize and plan the events, securing entertainment and vendors, and include many family-oriented activities,” event organizer Michelle Whalen said. For Whalen, this began when she was a stay-at-home mother, as a way to continue volunteering her time for causes that she was passionate about. “Previously it was conservation and ecology, and after forming my own family, it included

Abortion Issue Haunts Ottenbreit, Sask. Party There are a few things we should all know about Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit, his personal beliefs on abortion and how they may apply to his job. Greg Ottenbreit is truly one of the most gracious, decent people you will meet in politics. He is a devout man and sincere. Sadly, the two don’t always go hand in hand in politics or in life, but in case of the Yorkton MLA, they truly do. Furthermore, if his colleague like Health Minister Jim Reiter suggests that Ottenbreit hasn’t so far allowed his personal beliefs on issues like abortion to get in the way of his duties, we should likely give Ottenbreit the benefit of the doubt. While it’s always better to have a good guy represent you in your riding and in cabinet, it isn’t necessarily enough. It’s critical that an MLA and, especially, one serving as a minister, remember that they are there to represent all people and this is where Ottenbreit has chosen a bad path in the abortion debate, perhaps sending false expectations to the pro-life movement of which he is member. Problems started for Ottenbreit last month because of comments he made at the annual gathering of the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association in his hometown. There remains some question as to whether he was there to bring greetings on behalf of the government representative (which the Saskatchewan Party government says wasn’t the case) or there as a dutiful MLA supporting this cause. Whatever the case, Ottenbreit crossed a “small line”, according to Premier Scott Moe, by suggesting he would “continue to do what I can in my professional capacity” to address the abortion issue. Later, Ottenbreit suggested he was only talking about his “professional capacity” as an MLA representing his constituents, but this answer would seem unsatisfactory. Ottenbreit knows that individual provincial MLAs can do very little in “professional capacity” to address abortion issues. There are many pro-lifers in the Sask. Party government, including Moe, but the official policy of the governing party is that it respects the federal law permitting abortions in this country. What everyone, and especially Ottenbreit, would know full well that any influence in his “professional capacity” would involve very specific matters in the abortion debate controlled by provincial jurisdiction. One such matter would be providing universal coverage for the costs of Mifegymiso - the so-called abortion drug that can terminate pregnancies up to nine weeks. While the Saskatchewan government approved this drug two years ago, this province is one of only two jurisdictions refusing to pay for its public funding medicare. This is a matter that Ottenbreit is now addressing in his “professional capacity”, as the Sask. Party continues to debate covering the $300 cost of the drug. As rural and remote health minister, Ottenbreit would have direct input in this decision. We also know that his hometown Parkland Pro-Life Association is on a very specific letter writing to campaign to stop any public funding of this drug, again, something the province can do, but lest anyone be left with the impression that Pro-Lifers are happy with Ottenbreit and the Sask. Party government, the Yorkton MLA says he now feels he is caught in the middle between the pro-life and pro-choice movements. There is no “small lines” on the abortion question and how displeased pro-lifers may be is evident with talk of them moving their support to the Progressive Conservatives. This isn’t a threat likely to cost Sask. Party MLAs seats, but the pro-life vote was likely a factor in the Sask. Party leadership. Ottenbreit appears to have gotten himself and his governing party in a bit of mess over the abortion issue.
MLA Report With Nancy Heppner Federal Assistance Needed for Canola Producers
From fighting the federal carbon tax and fixing Canada’s flawed Equalization program to protecting jobs and ensuring programs and services are sustainable for years to come, your Saskatchewan Party government is standing up for Saskatchewan. This week we sent a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, reiterating our concerns regarding the escalating trade restrictions China has placed on Canadian canola. Saskatchewan has proposed changes to the federally-administered Advance Payments Program to limit the effects of drastic changes in seeding intentions and to cushion producers from a need to sell into an artificially depressed market. While the federal government seemed prepared to act quickly on this proposal, we are no further along today than we were nearly a month ago when it was first proposed. This lack of action from the federal government is concerning when canola producers are facing unprecedented uncertainty ahead of spring seeding. We are repeating our request that changes be made immediately to mitigate the risk to our canola producers in Saskatchewan while the federal government seeks to resolve its issues with China. We have also expressed a willingness to participate in a mission to China to resolve this issue through scientific or diplomatic means. In fact, we have offered any and all assistance to the federal government to resolve this matter. Helping Firefighters Large fires and extremely dry conditions continue to be a concern across the province. In these conditions, cigarette butts, hot ATV exhaust, and even bonfires can easily trigger grassfires that quickly burn out of control. Thank you to all Saskatchewan firefighters and emergency personnel for their response so far. Please pay attention and follow any fire bans issued by your municipality, as they are put in place for everyone's protection. Our province is grateful for the volunteer and professional firefighters and first responders who keep our people, property and communities safe. Recently, we announced that Saskatchewan’s 6,500 volunteer firefighters will soon have easier access to Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) benefits. Volunteer firefighters will have access to the same presumptive coverage as professional firefighters. Expanded presumptive coverage was first introduced for professional firefighters through an amendment to the legislation introduced this past December, which includes six additional cancers – prostate, skin, breast, cervical and ovarian cancer as well as multiple myeloma. Rural Crime Watch Expansion Our government recently announced the expansion of the Rural Crime Advisory Network. Initially launched in southern Saskatchewan earlier this year, the program is a partnership with the RCMP that allows detachment commanders to send text messages, emails or phone calls to residents with information about criminal activity in their area. Since the program was rolled out, people across the province have expressed interest and we’re now proud to announce its expansion to include central and northern Saskatchewan. This allows the RCMP to get information to the residents The Martensville Messenger welcomes letters to the editor for publication. Bicycle Safety Week 2019 The Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has declared the week of May 12-18, 2019 as “Bicycle Safety Week” in Saskatchewan. The objective of Bicycle Safety Week is to help Saskatchewan communities encourage safe cycling behaviours and prevent bicycle-related injuries. Between 2004 and 2013, 539 children and youth under the age of 20 were hospitalized due to cycling-related injuries. (These numbers only include the children who were hospitalized due to cycling-related injuries. Children who were seen in emergency rooms or medical clinics, and those who did not receive medical treatment, are not included in these numbers.) The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute supports local groups, communities, schools, and individuals to plan and promote activities during Bicycle Safety Week. The Prevention Institute’s theme for 2019 is “Build Safe Bikers”. As part of the week, we will be providing over 30,000 free resources to children throughout Saskatchewan, as well as supporting communities to host bicycle safety events throughout the week and in the coming months. For more information about Bicycle Safety Week, visit http://www.saskbikesafety. ca/. Working together, we can help to ensure the health and safety of child and youth cyclists.

Saskatchewan’s 2019 Big Game Draw Opens Online May 1 Saskatchewan’s big game draw opens on May 1 and hunters have until midnight on May 25 to submit their online applications. “Saskatchewan’s big game draw continues to be very popular and remains an important milestone for the hunting community,” Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. “The Ministry of Environment continues to work with stakeholders to improve the process and encourages all hunters to apply early.” Changes to the big game draw pool system were implemented in 2018 when the draw was expanded from four to six priority pools. Beginning this year, all first-time applicants will be placed in the D pool. They will be joined in that pool by all successfully drawn applicants from 2018 in an effort to reduce the number of applicants entering the Super A pool each year. The application process remains unchanged and information regarding the application, priority pools, wildlife management zone (WMZ) quotas and detailed application instructions can be found online at www. saskatchewanlicences.active.com. Apply early and use the online residency verification tool to avoid complications. Draws for several of the species receive a high number of applications compared to the number of licences available. For these species, the odds of being drawn will be low, even for applications in the top priority pool. The big game draw is administered through the Saskatchewan Hunting, Angling and Trapping Licence (HAL) system. Clients can submit, review and update their applications, check pool status history and purchase a draw licence through their HAL accounts. Draw results will be available through the HAL accounts around mid-June, with the exception of pronghorn, which will be available around mid-July. Applicants are responsible for checking their own draw results. Successful applicants will be able to purchase licences through their HAL accounts beginning August 1, 2019. For information on your HAL account or assistance with completing an application, please call 1-888-773-8450. If you have questions about your pool status or hunting in Saskatchewan, call the Ministry of Environment’s Inquiry Line at 1-800-567-4224. Further information about the big game draw is available at www.saskatchewan.ca/hunting.
