Big Changes Coming for Water Meters

The City of Martensville is initiating a program where existing water meters will be replaced with new automated water meters. Neptune Technology Group will be installing the meters by area and will be contacting homeowners to make appointments for the change-out.

Organics Service is Underway!

Organics pick-ups resumed on May 6th for the North-side of Martensville and May 13th for 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM the South-side. This service is scheduled on Fridays and alternates between north and south (Excluding Statutory Holidays) until the end of October. Organics is a subscription based program, to subscribe please contact City Hall Reminder!- Don’t miss your Pick-up Day! Organics, Garbage or Recycling must be curbside on your pick-up day by 7AM to ensure it is taken. Pick-up times can be fairly regular but are not set and are subject to variation or changes.

Warman RCMP is requesting assistance to identify this female for theft of a package from a mailbox belonging to a business in the Village of Borden, Sk. This incident occurred on May 11th, 2022, at approximately 12:46pm.

Emergency Crews Attend Rollover North of Martensville

On Sunday, May 22nd, the Martensville Fire Department, along with members from Warman Fire Rescue, RCMP and Medavie Health Services West, responded to a single vehicle rollover north of Martensville. Upon tending to the scene, STARS Air Ambulance was called. Martensville Fire Department was pleased to announce that the situation ended with the best possible outcome.

Pharmacists Can Now Prescribe Paxlovid Effective May 19th, Saskatchewan is expanding Paxlovid prescribing authority to approximately 170 select pharmacies across the province, as well as select physicians and nurse practitioners, significantly increasing the ability for residents to access this antiviral treatment for COVID-19.

The medication consists of three tablets taken every 12 hours for five days.

There is no fee to receive Paxlovid treatment.

Not all physicians will be prescribing and not all pharmacies will be providing Paxlovid prescribing and dispensing. To see a list of participating pharmacies and eligibility criteria visit saskatchewan.ca/paxlovid-pharmacies.

The decision to prescribe Paxlovid must consider patient risks, current medications and underlying conditions. Eligibility criteria is fairly strict and residents will be screened by their participating pharmacist, physician, nurse practitioner or through HealthLine 811 to ensure they meet the criteria.

Paxlovid is only recommended for adults over 18 who meet the following conditions: • test positive (PCR or rapid test) with mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms; • do not have any medical conditions that would make treatment inappropriate; • are not taking any medications that may cause potential drug interactions; and • if you are immunocompromised, regardless of vaccination status; • 70 years and older with designated risk factors, regardless of vaccination status or • meet one of the following criteria: - have a medical condition that puts you at high risk and are not fully vaccinated; or - are 55 to 69 years old and not fully vaccinated.

Treatment with Paxlovid must start within five days of symptom onset. It is not a treatment to prevent COVID-19 infection.

If you test positive for COVID-19 on a rapid antigen test or a PCR test and believe you may meet all the criteria for Paxlovid treatment, call a participating pharmacist, HealthLine 811 or a nurse practitioner. Stay home if you are ill and arrange for curbside pickup of medication if possible.

Saskatchewan also provides remdesivir as a COVID-19 treatment. This is an intravenous treatment of at least 60 minutes for three, consecutive days and must start within seven days of symptom onset. You may be assessed for eligibility for Remdesivir through HealthLine 811 only.

Treatment for COVID-19 is Not a Substitute for Vaccination Treatment for COVID-19 does not offer equal protection to vaccination.

Getting your first, second and all recommended booster doses remains the most important intervention to reduce risk of hospitalization and other severe outcomes from COVID-19. Find a vaccination clinic near you.

SUM Theatre Returns to Martensville Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

On Sunday, May 29th, Sum Theatre will be once again bringing Theatre in the Park to Martensville.

The event will take place in Lions Park, located at 415 6th Avenue South, at 7pm and is free for all to attend.

This year marks the tenth anniversary for Theatre in the Park, which is running May and June throughout the Saskatoon area, Regina and communities in northern Saskatchewan, in order to avoid the extreme heat that they ran into during last year’s performances.

Each year, the theme for Theatre in the Park is chosen in response to current issues taking place within the world and this year is no different.

The show this year, wâhkôhtowin, will focus on the kinship between all things, following the COVID pandemic.

Sum Theatre explained this theme by stating, “We have all felt the effects of the past two years.

Connections between relations have become more important to mend or hold close. What happens when the connections break? When the community is fractured? How do we rebuild what’s broken?”

This year is the third time Theatre in the Park has visited Martensville, and it is made possible due to local businesses working together. JAGplus and Bravo Dance Co.

both saw the impact Theatre in the Park had on those that attended and wanted to share this experience with the people in their own community.

“Jason, our kids and I attended a few shows a number of years in Saskatoon.

After a show in 2019, we thought it would be great to look into bringing it out to Martensville, so we did! We knew our young vibrant community would enjoy the shows and positive messages Sum Theatre created,” Carrie Rolfes of JAGplus explained.

All that was needed was for sponsors to come on board to help make it possible, so JAGplus approached Bravo Dance Co. and everything moved forward from there.

“Events like this really bring a community together. Sum Theatre incorporates audience participation that is enjoyed by all ages. If you have never been to one of their productions, I highly recommend it and I guarantee you will leave with a smile on your face and possibly a song in your head,” Rolfes added.

Sum Theatre performances all feature original music, along with colourful sets, props and costumes that help bring their story to life and relatable for all ages to enjoy.

Chase Lepage and Brody Dyck, two former Martensville Royals Football Club players, were chosen to play in the Challenge Cup 9-Man A-Side Football Game in Melville on May 23rd against Manitoba.

Lepage played defensive back while Dyck was defensive lineman, contributing to the Team Saskatchewan win 24-16 over Team Manitoba.

The Challenge Cup is an All-Star Game between Manitoba & Saskatchewan that was established in 2019.

Lepage, a defensive back and kicker, had an incredible season with the

Martensville Royals High School Football team, receiving Special Teams Player of the Year for the 2020-2021.

Dyck played defensive and offensive lineman with the Royals and took home the Lineman of the Year Award.

Lepage has signed on to play with the University Team, Holland Hurricanes in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for the upcoming season and will be taking Culinary Arts.

Congratulations to both players on all of your accomplishments!

Maddogs Youth Football Organization Kicks Off Spring Program Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

The Maddogs season is in full swing with a record amount of players registered this year. The program started in May and runs until the end of June.

Devin Hind, Executive Board Director, stated that, “Because of the high numbers, we had to split our Peewee Division into three teams, and the Bantam Division stayed at one team.

Six-A-Side football is a game intended for Grades 5 through 8 football players.

The game is played with fewer players on a smaller field which increases each players opportunity to touch the ball and be involved in the play. Five of the six offensive players are eligible receivers to catch the ball.

Coaches take the time to teach each player a variety of positions in a fun inclusive environment. As an introduction to tackle football the Six-A-Side game allows for a far bigger skill set to be developed for each player. More one on one coaching is available to each player because of fewer players on each team (20).

“Spring season is about having fun and learning the fundamentals of the sport and the players we have are excited and loving every moment they are on the field,” said Hind.

Rave BBQ Rubs Helps Prepare You For Summer Cooking Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Farmer’s Market had their opening day on Wednesday, May 18th and will be running each Wednesday until mid to late September in the Martensville Corner Store parking lot from 4pm to 8pm with a variety of vendors available.

One vendor that will be on-hand each week is Rave BBQ Rubs, which is owned/ operated by Martensville Farmer’s Market Manager Travis Blanchard and offers an array of products to help liven up your summer cooking.

“We are a small batch BBQ spice company that tries to be a little more mindful with our ingredients. We don’t use any M.S.G., preservatives, chemicals or fillers of any kind, all while also bringing the salt content down by about 50% compared to our leading competitors but still having loads of flavor,” Blanchard explained.

MLA Terry Jenson’s Report from the Legislature Spring Session Wrap-Up

Sask. Party Struggle Surprising Twist To Sitting Going into the spring sitting, one thought the story would be another very bad sitting for the NDP Opposition.

They had just lost the safe Athabasca riding, spurring resignation of currently NDP leader Ryan Meili.

Not only would this mean a spring sitting with a lame duck leader but with the uncomfortableness of the NDP’s fourth leadership race in 13 years.

Worse, Regina Lakeview MLA Carla Beck was the only candidate that seemed interested in the race until the late entry of Kaitlyn Harvey. The sharks in the Saskatchewan Party government could smell the blood in the water.

Conversely, while the Sask. Party government was certainly experiencing its share of problems, it certainly appeared the province’s fortunes were back on the rise.

The spring budget saw a pleasing reduction in the deficit to one-fifth the previous year’s deficit. And the budget projections for the price of oil of around $75 US a barrel remain considerably lower than today’s $100-plus-abarrel current price make that optimism seem well founded.

Optimism further abounded because of price increases in other commodities like wheat and potash — largely due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Certainly, Premier Scott Moe and his government’s support for Ukrainian refugees wanting to relocate to Canada was welcomed.

Similarly welcomed was an end to COVID-19 restrictions and the re-emergence from two years of pandemic restrictions that limited economic activities. So, it comes as more than a bit of surprise that it’s Moe’s Sask.

Party government that seems to be limping out of this spring sitting.

Again, it probably has less to do with what the NDP did this spring sitting than what the Sask. Party government did to itself.

Perhaps the old adage that governments defeat themselves isn’t quite applicable yet – largely because it remains difficult to see a political party in this province that people see as a viable alternative to run government.

That said, the Sask. Party ran headlong into a lot of discontent this spring … some of it, manifesting into an alternative political party that may now pose as a bigger challenge to the Sask. Party than current NDP Opposition.

Even if NDP politics was more in line with mainstream views — something that seems unlikely to change whether they elected Beck (the more moderate and odds-on favour in the leadership race) or Harvey — it's a party still struggling to get its act together.

That’s obvious in the more evident issues like its inability to attract a relatable leader or candidates. But it’s also obvious in its struggles to get onside with issues that most matter to the public.

For example, as the sitting wound down, we saw the NDP oppose a bill that would allow municipalities — if they wished — permit beer or wine at picnics in public municipal parks. It was an issue that Ryan Meili and the NDP proposed a year ago.

That said, the NDP did score points at the expense of the Sask. Party government on critical issues like longsurgical wait times, closed rural emergency services doctors and nurses leaving the province and perhaps even ongoing COVID-19 deaths that the government has simply tried to downplay in recent months. There is no doubt that people were frustrated by the on-going pandemic that has been the source of so many issues like these.

But polls show a decided frustration with the government over its handling of COVID-19. And rather than rally behind Moe and his government for opening things up, there seems interest in new alternatives from the right like the new United Party backed by former Sask. Party Nadine Wilson and even former agriculture minister Gerry Ritz.

This discontent on the right - even after trying to appease their concerns - was troubling for Moe and company.

Surprisingly, there was a lot this spring that the government found troubling.

As the spring session of the Legislature closed, our government was able to celebrate a number of provincial accomplishments. Our population is growing, the economy is expanding and diversifying, Northern Saskatchewan has renewed investment, and Saskatchewan continues to lead the country in multiple economic indicators.

If you listen to the NDP, none of this is good news. We want to recognize the hard work that Saskatchewan businesses and global investors are doing.

To support that effort, the Government of Saskatchewan remains committed to creating an economic climate that will be sustainable for generations and create new jobs. This is Saskatchewan’s time to shine, and we’re happy with the progress made so far.

In March, the value of building permits increased by 20.2 per cent month-to-month and by 45.7 per cent year-over-year. Merchandise exports increased by 34.4 per cent month-tomonth, 38.5 per cent year over year and 27.6 per cent year-to-date. The value of manufacturing sales increased by 11.1 per cent month-to-month and by 44.6 per cent year-over-year. The value of wholesale trade increased by 28.9 per cent year-over-year.

These key economic indicators cover a wide swath of sectors. The fact Saskatchewan is either leading or near the top in all of them says Saskatchewan’s economy is vibrant, diverse, and strong.

Yet to be fully realized are the economic benefits that four major investment projects for Northern Saskatchewan will bring. Over $1 billion was dedicated to the forestry sector with 2,600 jobs expected. As we continue to advance economic reconciliation and increase Indigenous participation in the economy, our government created the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation. Its goal is to provide support First Nations and Métis businesses owners who want to invest in forestry, mining, oil and gas, energy production and value-added agriculture. These investments create economic diversity, support growing communities and lead to more high-paying jobs.

This spring statistics show the number of Indigenous businesses in the province has been growing by leaps and bounds. With the support of organizations like the Saskatchewan Indigenous Economic Development Network, some areas have seen the number of Indigenous businesses double over the past decade.

Just this week, our government joined with Whitecap Resources and Federated Co-operatives Limited to begin a study that will analyze commercial-scale hydrogen opportunities. Saskatchewan has been at the forefront of carbon capture utilization and storage. This technology allows our province to potentially tap into the blue hydrogen market that uses steam to extract hydrogen from natural gas.

With increasing global use, hydrogen projects are in high demand. The study will accelerate the private sector’s interest in our province and the emerging hydrogen market. Last fall, policy commitments were announced to advance opportunities for an infrastructure hub in the Regina-Moose Jaw Industrial Corridor. A hydrogen/ carbon capture hub in this region could allow for the development of an entire, commercial-scale hydrogen supply and demand chain in Saskatchewan.

Those are just some of the projects currently underway in Saskatchewan reflecting the confidence that private investors and multi-national corporations have in our province. They can invest anywhere in the world, but they choose to invest right here.

During this spring sitting, our government presented a budget that highlighted Saskatchewan’s improving finances and provided a clear path to balance. We made key investments in healthcare, education and mental health and addictions. We have crafted policies that will expand the economy, facilitate new investment and allow everyone to benefit.

This summer, we look forward to connecting with you. After two years of emails and phone calls, we’re excited to have more face-to-face conversations again.

Martensville Gardens Plans For Future Growth to Accommodate Waiting List Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This year is the third season that Martensville Gardens, a community garden area located next to the Martensville Speedway on 9th Street North, has been active. For their first season, they began with ten boxes and added another ten boxes for the second season. This year, the group would like to see even more growth and has submitted a proposal to the City of Martensville for assistance in reaching their goals.

Martensville has another community garden plot located within Kinsmen Park; however, the waiting list for space was quite lengthy, which is where this idea came from. So far, 20 individuals have been taken from that wait list and have received a plot within Martensville Gardens; however, there is still over 40 people on the current wait list, which is something Martensville Gardens would like to see accommodated.

To date, the City of Martensville has supported this project by supplying building materials, topsoil, wood mulch and lumber and according to Jason McCumber, a past president and current member of the Saskatoon Kart Racers Board of Directors, the current proposal is a pretty lofty one.

“The City of Martensville has been fantastic to work with thus far and this current proposal is a big one that will have to go to Council for approval. The goal is to satisfy the entire wait list that we have in place right now. We would like to get 40 more boxes built as soon as possible,” McCumber said.

Thanks to the help of members from the Saskatoon Kart Racing Club and members of the garden, all work at the site when it comes to landscaping, constructing the garden boxes and other required projects has been completed due to volunteer support.

“Going forward, we plan to be more proactive in our planning process. We have learned a lot about the process for these things, so now we just need to trust the process and see where it takes us. This request does come from a sincere demand standpoint. We aren’t building it hoping they will come.They are already in line,” McCumber added.

Growing in size means looking at the bigger picture as well, which in this case, means planning ahead for a more sustainable water source. McCumber noted that the “wish list” item for Martensville Gardens would be to have their own municipal water connection. A quote was received for this job and the request to have this addition was included in the proposal to the City of Martensville as well.

“We want to be able to accommodate everyone and the current system of hauling water from the tank isn’t feasible for everyone such as seniors and those with special needs. We want this to be inclusive for everyone and make it something everyone can enjoy by making it more user-friendly.”

For now, McCumber said they will wait to see where things are headed and continue to look towards expanding this vision into something that even more members of the community can enjoy for years to come.

SGI has begun to mail out approximately 603,000 rebate cheques to customers across Saskatchewan.

“World events continue to put pressure on the cost of living, and SGI is proud to provide nearly $90M in relief to customers,” Minister Responsible for SGI Don Morgan said. “Wellperforming investments have brought the Auto Fund’s Rate Stabilization Reserve to a surplus, and now is a good time to put some of that money into the pockets of Saskatchewan people.”

SGI customers will receive a $100 rebate for each vehicle or motorcycle they had actively registered as of March 9, 2022. Nearly all classes of vehicle (private, commercial, farm, etc.) are eligible, while trailers and snowmobiles are not.

Customers do not have to request or apply for the rebate. They should receive a cheque as long as their address is up to date with SGI, and customers are advised to ignore any texts they may receive from scammers saying they need to click a link to apply.

The cheques will be mailed in 10 batches between May 19 and May 30. Cheques will be mailed in an order that is randomly assigned

by SGI’s system, so two customers in the same household may receive their cheques up to two weeks apart.

Customers are asked to be patient while cheques are being delivered. If you haven’t received your cheque by June 21, 2022, or you believe the value of your cheque is inaccurate, please call the SGI Customer Service Centre at 1-844-855-2744.
