Big Changes Coming for Water Meters

Reminder!- Don’t miss your Pick-up Day! Organics, Garbage or Recycling must be curbside on your pick-up day by 7AM to ensure it is taken. Pick-up times can be fairly regular but are not set and are subject to variation or changes.

The City of Martensville is initiating a program where existing water meters will be replaced with new automated water meters. Neptune Technology Group will be installing the meters by area and will be contacting homeowners to make appointments for the change-out.

POLICE Dalmeny Police Look For Information on Dangerous Driver At approximately 3:30 pm Dalmeny Police Service was made aware of a vehicle attempting to flee from Corman Park Police Service. A DPS member located the vehicle on the Dalmeny Access and attempted to stop the vehicle.

DPS observed the vehicle pickup speed and passed a northbound vehicle almost colliding with a southbound vehicle near the Hwy 305 intersection.

Due to the dangerous situation the DPS member chose not to engage in a pursuit. The vehicle travelled through town and exited onto Powerline Rd from Loeppky Ave. DPS are attempting to identify to driver of the vehicle. Any information can be forwarded to DPS.

Police Charge Drivers For Excessive Speeding

Corman Park Police have charged two drivers under the Traffic Safety Act for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/hr.

On May 8th, shortly after 3pm, Police stopped a driver with two occupants inside the vehicle for travelling at 164km/hr in a 90km/hr zone.

On May 10th, shortly before 10pm, Police

stopped a driver with three occupants inside the vehicle for travelling at 172km/hr in a 110km/hr zone.

Both drivers were issued an offence notice with a voluntary payment or an option to attend court. Each vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Police would like to remind drivers to obey speed limit signs to enhance the safety of all users of the roadway.

On April 19, 2022, Rosthern RCMP received a report of sexual assaults that occurred at a care facility in Hepburn, SK. Investigation has determined that between 1992 and 2009, five adult residents of the facility were sexually assaulted by a male staff member. He has not worked at the facility since 2009.

As a result, Brent Gabona (1969-11-28) of Waldheim, SK was arrested on May 10, 2022 and charged with 5 counts, sexual assault, Section 271, Criminal Code, and 3 counts, sexual exploitation of a person with a disability, Section 153.1(1), Criminal Code (Information 90442860).

Gabona appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on May 13, 2022.

Ron Biberdorf, Principal of Venture Heights school in Martensville, saw a need for an educational, fun program for kindergarten kids that could be available every day of the week. Keeping them in a school like routine, Biberdorf, along with Educational Assistant Jaimie Doell, came up with a program called Sweet N Silly KinderCare.

This program started in the 2021/2022 school year and is an extension of learning that is run full days on the opposite days of kindergarten, allowing continued learning opportunities for little growing minds.

Open to all Kindergarten students in Martensville and surrounding area, it is currently run this year on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. “If I receive enough registration for days opposite of Venture Heights Kindergarten days, we can run Monday through Friday in the 2022/2023 school year,” said Doell.

This fun social building program offers educational activities, library time, sensory play, dress up, and free time play stations. Students also get to take part in small science experiments, crafting, outside exploring and learning.

Sweet N Silly KinderCare is located at Venture Heights School and runs from 8:30am – 3:15 pm. Before and After Care hours are 7:30am – 5pm. They provide supervised outside recess, and indoor body breaks when weather does not co-operate.

Doell stated, “I also host day off care from 7:30am – 5pm for days such as PD days, Days in Lieu, and February/Easter Breaks. This isn’t just for Kindergarten age, this is for ALL K-8 students from anywhere in the Valley. There are limited spots for these days and the cost will be $35 per student.”

Sask Parks 2022 Camping Season Begins Thursday, May 19 After another successful campsite reservation launch, Saskatchewan's provincial parks are ready to welcome campers back to the parks starting this Thursday, May 19.

"The May long weekend has marked the start of a new camping season for many years now in our province," Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said.

"It's the weekend where seasonal campers set up their home away from home for the summer, and the weekend where many families get to enjoy their first campfire of the year together. We are looking forward to another busy but memorable season in the parks."

Campers are reminded that daily and weekly park entry permits can be purchased online and printed at home in advance of their visit. If an annual entry permit has been purchased but hasn't been delivered yet, campers will have received a temporary permit via email that can be printed and displayed in their vehicle until the permit arrives in the mail.

Upon arriving in the park, campers can proceed directly to their campsite with their entry permit displayed and they will be automatically checked-in.

Guided park programs and events will kick off in many provincial parks this weekend with family-friendly activities to explore such as crafts, gnome homebuilding, themed hikes, campfires, night sky-gazing, geocaching, and recreation sports and activities. Self-guided Park Discovery Packs will also be available to borrow daily in most parks starting this weekend. Topics range from astronomy to birds and bugs. The packs include everything needed to complete a craft, explore the park or conduct a science experiment.

Once again, an alcohol and recreational cannabis ban will be in effect for the May long weekend.Cottages, rental cabins and any business facilities serving liquor in licensed establishments in parks are not affected by the ban.

Are You Ready For Buster Days 2022 Buster Days Provides Entertainment For All Ages With Not Only the Return of Popular Events, But New Options Available Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Residents of Martensville haven’t had a full-fledged Buster Days celebration since 2019, but that is about to change this year. Starting June 3rd and running until June 5th, the City of Martensville will be a hub of activity with events for all ages available.

“We are very excited to be back to full capacity and to get back into the community and offer something for everyone to come out and enjoy themselves again,” Buster Days organizer Angela Reddekopp said.

Some of the most popular events from past years will once again be back, including the Saturday morning parade, which will take place at 11am on the South side of the City (4th Street South, 1st Avenue South, and Main Street.)

“We have been getting businesses slowly trickling in, but would love to see some more sign up. I know that some were unsure if it was going to be taking place, but either way, we will have a parade,” Reddekopp added.

Other events that will be coming back consist of the Family Swim Night and Teen Swim night, both taking place Friday night, as well as the Friday night Fireworks that always draws a large crowd. On Saturday, there will be a pancake breakfast hosted by the Martensville Fire Department, inflatables, a gaming truck, laser tag, and all kinds of fun activities available at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion. Sunday will have a family picnic, bingo, a money pit and more. See posters on the left of this page for a full list of events that will be taking place throughout Buster Days.

There are several new options available this year, including Club 55, which is in place to offer something for the older population in Martensville. “Club 55 will be running all weekend and is basically an opportunity for people to come out and try new things. Everything is free due to a grant that we received from the Prairie Central District for Sport Culture and Recreation,” Reddekopp explained. Some options included with Club 55 are: a paint night on Friday at North Ridge Community Centre, Aqua Fit, Yoga and Cardio Salsa on Saturday and an opportunity to learn to play pickleball on Sunday.

“Although these events are free, we ask that people register on the City of Martensville website, so we have an idea of how many people will be coming out. The paint night only has room for 40 people, so be sure to sign up.”

Another new event is the Corgi races, which are taking place Sunday at the Curling Rink. There will also be a teen movie night on Friday Night at North Ridge Community Centre which will feature “Spider-Man – No Way Home”.

“We really try to make Buster Days as inclusive as possible for all age groups and make this event affordable and entertaining for everyone to come out and enjoy.”

Buster Days is made possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Buster Days Committee, which consists of 11 members this year. For anyone interested in getting involved with this popular community event, there is always a need for more members on the committee. For more information about the Buster Days Committee, contact the MAP. In addition to the Buster Days Committee, this event is only possible due to the contributions of volunteers and community organizations. More volunteers are always needed, so if you are interested in getting involved, contact the MAP to see how you can help with Buster Days.

“One of the mandates for Buster Days is to give back to the groups within the community, so different organizations and different service groups have donated their time and by doing that, we provide an honorarium back to their organization to help them out,” Reddekopp said.

Although there will be drop-in options available, Reddekopp recommends for people to pre-register for events online at www.martensville.ca so they have a better idea on how many numbers to expect. There is also an option to purchase wristbands in advance, which can be picked up when you attend Buster Days.

“We can’t wait to have everyone come out to Buster Days. It is one of those all-encompassing community events that not only provides entertainment for everyone, it also supports community intiatives and is one of the biggest events of the year,” Reddekopp added.

The Martensville Farmer’s Market will be kicking off their 2022 season on Wednesday, May 18th and currently has approximately 13 registered vendors to start the year off, which Market M a n a g e r T r a v i s Blanchard is excited about.

“It is pretty awesome to see considering the produce season doesn’t start until the end of June or so,” Blanchard said.

“I am just excited to get the market season rolling again that I actually haven’t had a chance to think of anything to do for the first day other than to just open and see some smiling faces, but I am sure we will be having some special events in the near future,” Blanchard said when asked about any special grand opening celebrations.

The new hours are something that Blanchard, along with the vendors are excited about, as this will provide more opportunity for those working throughout the day to visit the market.

“We had a lot of people mention that they wished the market was open later so that they are still able to shop the market while working a full-time job. We had changed the hours closer to the end of last season and all of the vendors agreed that there was certainly an uptick in traffic and some positive comments shared as well.”

Lions Club Looks to Change Local Lives Through Dog Walk Fundraiser Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville & District Lions Club has been busy preparing for the 8th annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, which will be taking place at the Lions Park at 415 6th Avenue South on Sunday, May 29th. Registration will take place at 1:30pm, with the walk at 2:00pm and a BBQ at 3:00pm.

Project Chairperson Doug Ward of the Lions Club stated that although they won’t know how many walkers will be participating until the day of the event, there have been lots of people stating they will be attending.

“I am hoping for approximately 100 people with about 50 dogs. We have the Saskatoon Lions Club joining us this year, so there could be more and our motto is ‘the more the merrier’,” ABOVE: Doug Ward with his Ward said.

Currently, the local Lions Club is waiting to receive two dog guides for individuals within the community; one Hearing Assistance Dog for a family where both parents are hearing impaired and the previous dog passed away, and another a high school student that requires the assistance of a Special Service Dog. Ward noted that both dogs have been delayed due to Covid restrictions making it difficult to proceed with the rigorous training required for service dogs.

“The Lions Foundation of Canada is expanding their facilities so they can increase the number of dogs they provide to people that need them. They have provided up to 300 service dogs per year and hope to provide more in the future as the need is there, especially for Autism Assistance Guide Dogs,” Ward explained.

Guide dogs provided through the Lions Foundation of Canada are free of charge for individuals, compared to going through a private training group, where these dogs can cost upwards of $25,000 to $35,000. In order to provide Guide Dogs to families in need, Lions Clubs across the country rely on donations throughout the year and through events such as the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides.

Donations of cans and bottles can also be made, which will go towards supporting this event. MLA Terry Jenson’s Report from the Legislature More Jobs, More Investment and More Opportunities

Doing Things Differently May Help Rural Health Care One gets why losing a hospital is hard on a town.

Perhaps even more than the local hockey or curling rink or the coffee shop, the true lifeblood of rural communities in Saskatchewan and most everywhere else has been the hospital.

The local doctors and nurses there provide help and comfort for those that are sick or see our health failing - the latter of which is extremely important in aging rural communities where the prospect of that happening is an increasing reality and when hit with unexpected, traumatic crisis - an accident or even an unpredicted heart attack having a hospital close by always provides peace of mind.

Add to the reality that in most communities, the hospital becomes the best employer in town, but some three decades after all the furor over the closures or conversion of those 52 rural hospitals to “wellness centres” now known as primary care centres, there may be a new and growing awareness that health care be delivered differently in this province.

Sadly, that awareness of this isn’t always evident in the Saskatchewan legislature where debate often didn’t stray much this spring sitting from all-too-familiar themes: We heard the NDP Opposition say there is panic over emergency room closures in the remaining hospitals.

We heard familiar complaints we cannot recruit and retain rural doctors and we heard the Saskatchewan Party government counter that all this can be traced back to the 1993 closure decisions.

Even if some elements of both narratives happen to be true, the on-going political arguments seldom produce solutions. Nor are they all that reflective of the reality that we have been finding solutions over the past three decades to the rural health care dilemma.

In fact, we are still finding solutions. And some of these new ways of doing things have, arguably, been better.

For example, the Sask. Party government’s introduction of STARS ambulance spearheaded by former finance minister and Melfort MLA Rod Gantefoer has been an excellent response to long-standing fears of medical care not getting to accident victims in remote rural locations.

Being able to get severe trauma to the best city hospitals more quickly is something to celebrate, but we should also celebrate less dramatic things being accomplished at the primary health care level.

One of them is the acceptance and better utilization of nurse practitioners like Tara Schmalenberg who works at Raymore's primary care centre.

Raymore is one of those places that lost its hospital 29 years ago. Today, nurse practitioners like Schmalenberg can diagnose, order prescriptions, order diagnostic tests or X-rays or refer to specialists. "There's very little (in primary health care) as a nurse practitioner that I cannot do," she said.

Schmalenberg, who is also president of the Saskatchewan Nurse Practitioners Association, says her work isn’t about replacing doctors. But she argues nurse practitioners aren’t being well utilized now.

One thing that may be changing is the growing realization that when most people need some initial primary care, it may not always be a doctor that’s needed.

Consider the work of nurse practitioner Lisa Plank in Balcarres who is heading a pilot project that is designed to improve early mental health assessment and treatment —especially for youth. "It's somewhat like ordering a backhoe when you (initially) need a shovel," Plank said of her work. "I'm the shovel."

When the 52 rural hospitals were closed, mental health issues were something to deal with only when it was severe enough to require institutionalization.

We now know most of us will encounter a mental health issue in our lifetime. Schmalenberg and Plank argue that if nurse practitioners were better utilized, it would likely provide better health care delivery at the primary level. Isn’t it time we looked at new, more efficient ways to address all health issues?

Saskatchewan has re-enforced our place as a world leader in 2022.

Despite the challenges of the last two years, our province has been leading the way in economic expansion and investment. A stable and prosperous economy allows our government to invest that hard work back into public programs and services.

Statistics Canada has reported that our province added over 18,000 new jobs between April 2021 and April 2022. For the 17th consecutive month, off-reserve Indigenous employment was up, with youth employment rising over eight per cent.

Between February 2021 and February 2022, we led the nation in yearover-year retail trade growth. The value of retail trade increased by 13 per cent to a total of over $2 billion. Additionally, our province recorded the secondhighest month-to-month growth in merchandise exports. The good news continued as wholesale trade increased by nearly 37 per cent over 2021, the highest among the provinces. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s manufacturing sector grew by nearly 40 per cent year-over-year, the highest growth in the country. We retained the distinction of being Canada’s best jurisdiction for mining investment. We have also been named the second-best jurisdiction globally, just behind Western Australia. In 2021, Saskatchewan’s mining sector generated $8.6 billion in sales, the second-highest ever recorded. Economic advancements of this nature lead to further private investment in our province, creating more jobs and supporting our growing communities.

While we celebrate the collective achievements as a province, our government is committed to continued, sustainable growth for future generations. With that in mind, we have focused on creating an economic environment that is attractive to investors, resulting in more jobs to support our communities.

One way to assist is by supporting job seekers as they enter the workforce or look for a new opportunity.

Our government has provided $1 million in support for Hospitality Saskatchewan to promote careers in the hospitality and tourism sector. Businesses were impacted by the global pandemic and are working through a labour shortage. The investment will assist in attracting, training and retaining employees. A further $532,000 in one-time funding will provide training and support for Indigenous job seekers to develop skills needed for this industry.

Investing in Northern Saskatchewan is part of our Growth Plan as we promote the vast opportunities our province holds. Global investors are looking to us for the food, fuel, fertilizer and forestry products they need.

Four forestry projects worth $1 billion are underway and will create over 2,600 jobs for Saskatchewan residents, largely in the north.

As we work to advance reconciliation and promote economic development, our government has expanded our support for Indigenous resource development projects. Through discussions with business owners and Indigenous leaders, a lack of access to capital funds was identified as a barrier to investment. In response, legislation will create the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation (SIIF). Loan guarantees are being offered to eligible First Nations and Métis communities and organizations to support investments in forestry, mining, oil and gas, energy production and value-added agriculture. This targeted investment will create more jobs and further strengthen our communities.

Despite claims from the NDP that our confidence in Saskatchewan’s entrepreneurs and businesses is nothing more than political, statistics show the world is investing in Saskatchewan. We have more jobs, more investment and more opportunities in our province every day.

The countdown is on for the 'Street Hockey Fun Day' presented by the MCRP as part of the 2022 Buster Days on Saturday June 4.

This fun event creates an opportunity for everyone to welcome in Summer bringing together dozens of smiling kids and family supporters, and to celebrate being a part of this awesome Martensville community!

Street Hockey Fun Day Event starts at 11:30am and runs until 6pm. It is located at the tennis courts in Kinsmen Park off of 3rd Street North.

The cost per team is $140 which includes a FREE team t-shirt jersey to take home. Each team will be 3 on 3 action and will consist of a maximum of seven players – six players and a goalie.

Government

Each team will get three 24-minute games over the course of the afternoon.

Wins and losses will not be kept track as this event is for FUN! All teams are required to provide a referee for each of their three games.Any penalties called will be served by a penalty shot.

Equipment requirements are a helmet with a cage, gloves, hockey stick, and shin pads are optional.

Goalies are required to supply their own goalie gear.
