Local Yoga Instructor Val Bosch Gives Back to Community Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

Val Bosch is a familiar name for many within Martensville, having been a well-known yoga fitness instructor in the community. Bosch, who became Yoga Alliance Certified in 2015, has lived with her husband in Martensville for many years and through her time as a yoga instructor with the City of Martensville and at Soul Power Fitness, has met many people throughout that time.

Bosch, along with her husband Ted have decided to semi-retire making British Columbia their new home. Bosch has plans to continue to teach Yoga part-time and work as a dental hygienist.

Although the couple will be moving, Bosch wanted to give back to her community and chose to do a Yoga-Thon as a fundraiser. This event will be a farewell party for Val and will be held at Soul Power Fitness on Saturday, March 14th.

There is an amazing lineup of yoga classes including special guests; Carla Duval who is a well-known yoga instructor in Saskatchewan and Scott’s Yoga will be leading an acro yoga demonstration where people are welcome to try it as well.

It’s no charge to register with an optional donation at the door with cash or cheque made out to the Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP). 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the MCRP and everyone is welcome to participate.

Protect your Property and Be Ready for Spring Thaw

With prolonged cold temperatures and snow accumulation, and now moving into milder climates, we are expecting a rapid melt. This may lead to seepage of water into basement or water to accumulate on property. We are all responsible to protect our own property and mitigate any potential risks. Provided are some helpful tips and tasks to help prevent water seeping into your basement or accumulating on your property.

1.

Extend downspouts at least two metres (six feet) from your basement walls.

The further the water is from the foundation, the less chance that it will make its way into your basement. Splash pads can help direct the water to a permeable surface, such as a garden or lawn. Clear debris from your eavestroughs (gutters) to prevent them from overflowing. If your eavestroughs or downspouts overflow even when they are clean, install larger ones.

2.

Consider moving snow away from the foundation of your home, to prevent a large degree of melting immediately adjacent to your foundation.

3.

Ensure proper grading around your home and property or build up the ground slope around your home. Soil should slope down from your foundation and window wells for at least two to three metres (about six to ten feet) at a drop of at least 1020 centimetres (about four to eight inches). If water soaks into the ground within the backfill zone, it will accumulate next to your basement walls and floor, where it can leak in or damage the foundation. Check your ground slope annually, because soil, sidewalks, patios, decks and driveways can settle over time. You can find grade elevation information on Martensville.ca 4.

Check the drainage paths on your property. Ensure that storm water flows to the lane or street, not towards your home. It also shouldn’t flow into your neighbour’s yard. Property should be graded to keep water flowing in the right direction. If water pools on your property, consider pumping it to the street.

5.

Fix leaks in basement walls, floors, windows and doors.

6.

If you have protective plumbing, such as backflow valves and sump pumps, make sure they are working properly.

7.

If you are away from your property for a period (2-3 days) have someone check the property to ensure water is not coming into the basement.

8.

Elevate and/or store important equipment and personal items as to avoid damage in case of water seepage.

City crews will ensure streets, catch basins, and drain ways are clear to ensure the spring melt does not back up on city streets and onto properties so we can all enjoy and have a worry-free spring. Council Discusses Communication Plan and MAP Concession

The first City Council meeting of the month was held on Tuesday, March 3rd and with a short agenda, the topics included approving the 2020 Communication Plan, and discussion regarding the Martensville Athletic Pavilion concession services.

The Communication Plan for the City of Martensville is set in place to ensure that residents are being informed about important information within the community. “The primary purpose of the plan is to continue to improve the quality of external communications in an effort to support and encourage an engaged and informed community,” Mayor Kent Muench explained.

Some forms of communication used by the City of Martensville include their website, located at www.martensville.ca, Facebook, community newsletter, the Martensville Messenger, the Guide to Martensville, open houses, online promotional videos and more.

Research done regarding the Communication Plan showed that the most engaged residents are within the 26-40 age group, followed by the age 41-55 age group. It also showed that residents that have lived within the community for ten or more years are more engaged.

The research showed that Facebook is the number one method residents are using to access information and top areas of interest include community events, recreation facilities, seasonal programs, construction projects and snow removal.

Previously, the concession at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion was run by Pita Pit; however, they will no longer be providing services, and instead JC Concessions has applied to take over. The primary operating hours for the concession will centre on the Martensville High School and run from 8:30am-1:30pm, closing for July and August. The term of the lease will be for one year, with the term ending June 30, 2021 and the option to renew. The concession will be open weekends and evenings for special events when requested.

Another week in the NHL means almost all new standings in the Pacific Division. The Vegas Golden Knights looked like they were pulling away from the pack but now the second place Edmonton Oilers are hot on their heels, just two points back with a game in hand. Edmonton has a record of 35-23-8 which has them 12th in the overall standings.

In the past week the Calgary Flames have jumped into third in the Pacific after collecting seven of a possible 10 points on a tough road trip that included the two of the best teams in the league in Boston and Tampa Bay. Calgary’s record of 34-26-7 has them three points behind the Oilers and just one point ahead of the Vancouver Canucks who hold the top Wild Card spot in the West.

The Canucks have been struggling after the loss of their starting Goalie Jakob Markstrom to injury. Young goalie Thatcher Demko looked to be a high quality back-up and possible starter with a 10-6-2 record. But since being moved to the starting role he has allowed 10 goals in his first three games.

In the crowded Western Conference there is just one point separating four teams for the final Wild Card spot.

Nashville, Winnipeg and Arizona are all tied for the final spot with Minnesota just one point behind.

The Jets have lost four of their last five games and will need to step it up if they want to stay in the race. Over in the East the Toronto Maple Leafs have put some space between them and the Florida Panthers. After a loss to the Hurricanes and their emergency back-up Goalie, the Leafs have won three straight against Tampa Bay, Florida and Vancouver to put them five points ahead of the Panthers for third in the Atlantic Division.

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

Martensville Royals Boys’ Curling Team Win Regionals Martensville Messenger

Sabres, McLurg (Wilkie) Broncs, Waldheim Raiders, Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans, Lloydminster Comp. Barons, and Martensville Royals.

The boys won their first game 9-1 after six ends against Lloydminster. They played the A final game against Spiritwood, winning 9-3 after seven ends.

Spiritwood won the B final, and had to defeat Martensville twice in order to advance to Provincials

Martensville had the hammer in the first and counted one. Spiritwood counted one in the second end, and Martensville counted four in the third to go up 5-1. Spiritwood counted two in the fourth, making it 5-3 after four. There was a steal of one by Spiritwood in the fifth to make it 5-4.

Martensville skip Brayden Grindheim made a draw against four in the sixth end to count one, making the score 6-4.

Spiritwood blanked the seventh end. The eighth end was close and Spiritwood tried a difficult shot for two on their last rock to go to an extra end, but just missed and only counted one, making it a 6-5 win for Martensville.

Brayden Grindheim, Rylan Gabruk & Taylor Warren have played together for three years in high school. Logan & Kleyson are new to the team this year. Brayden & Logan have been rotating between skip and third position.

The team would like to thank the Martensville Curling Club for giving practice ice to the boys and the support they receive from the club and fans in attendance or watching livestream.

Warman Wildcats On To Provincials Submitted

The Warman Wildcats Peewee A girls hockey team started their first run of Provincials against Battleford tieing them 1-1 and then beat them 4-1 to win the series.

They won their first game easily against PA in the second series but lost the next game 6-3.

They will play back in PA on March 8 and then in Warman on March 14th.

Curling Cousins Represent at Provincial Mixed Doubles

The curling cousin duo of Melissa Remeshylo and Dylan Derksen have both been curling for six years with family, and the last several years with the Martensville Curling Club. They have been to the CurlSask Prairieland Curling Camp for the past two summers.

Coached by Scott Remeshylo, they have enjoyed their first year of curling competitively for the two person mixed doubles team in Humboldt this past weekend and have been in two other mixed doubles events this year, the U21 bonspiel held in Martensville, and the U18 Provincials in Nipawin. They also curl competitively with their own boys/girls teams.

Political Acrimony Needs To Tone Down

Simmer down. It’s what our teachers used to tell us when we were misbehaving. And it appears it’s what politicians and stakeholders behaving like unmanageable petulance children now need to hear.

Some might argue they’ve always behaved this way, but it sure feels different. It’s gotten really bad. Petty complaints. Nasty name-calling. Ceaseless grievances.

Perpetual outrage. And an arrogant refusal to listen to the other side always deemed to be stupid, immoral or unworthy.

This is not good.

Yes, there’s a sitting minority Parliament in Ottawa and the Saskatchewan legislature resumes this week. That a non-confidence vote could happen any day spurring another nasty federal election and that the Saskatchewan legislature is in its last sitting before the next general election heightens tensions.

But what’s so different is the animosity is no longer confined to our political chambers or our elected politicians.

It seems to be everybody and it sure seems everywhere.It’s pretty much remained at this manic level since the last federal election … or even long before, at least going back to the federal Liberal government implementation of the carbon tax.

About the only thing you can say is today’s childish antics know no political philosophy. Petty politics cuts across party lines. Today Politicians and stakeholders seem to assume that’s how we want to see them do business these days. Far too often, it’s the opposite of what most of us want.

For example, the Saskatchewan NDP recently got back a freedom of information request in what is another episode of childish behaviour on both sides.

It is childish that Saskatchewan Party government has been charging thousands of dollars in FOI costs for basic information on cabinet ministers’ travel and other expenses that should be public without cost. Perhaps the government is doing this because past travel FOI has uncovered somewhat questionable choices.

However, the information Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gord Wyant eventually handed over had very little that would be considered untoward, other that maybe a couple $60 dinners with local Saskatoon MLA David Buckingham. He shouldn’t be paying for MLAs’ suppers. But who would begrudge Wyant submitting a $9.77 coffee receipt for a coffee meeting with his deputy minister? Well, the NDP, that’s who.

“It’s a very small amount but you have to take this in the larger context,” said NDP education critic Carla Beck, bemoaning the stalled negotiations with the provinces teachers who have been known to buy classroom supplies not funded by school board budgets.

Education is underfunded but complaining about $9.77 seems to be a silly and petty way to make that point.

It really doesn’t seem to matter whether the issue is big or small. Complex issues requiring thoughtful consideration are even more likely to be drowned out by angry hollering from side or other.

Consider Teck Frontier’s decision not to go ahead with its massive oilsands project. Yes, it’s about “regulatory uncertainty”, but the company spelled that most of the uncertainty is about the feasibility of heavy oil when investors want greener energy and when oil is at potentially unprofitable $50-plus a barrel.

Or consider some First Nation spokespeople arguing the rail blockades are necessary because “white settlers” don’t understand that nothing has changed in the last 150 years.

Well, some things have changed. Since 1992, Saskatchewan First Nations, alone, have received $1.23 billion in land claim settlements - $952 million from the federal government and $273 million from the province.

Add $2 billion in residential school survivor compensation, federal settlement and apologies for the Sixties Scoop and gaming framework agreements worth hundreds of millions. Sure, more has to be done and it’s not perfect. There are always problems to fix. But maybe if we stopped all the hollering, we’d see things aren’t as broken as we think.

MLA Report With Nancy Heppner Alberta Court Rules Carbon Tax Unconstitutional

The Trudeau Carbon Tax – imposed on a number of provinces including Saskatchewan – is unconstitutional.

In a four to one decision, the Alberta Court of Appeal has ruled that the imposition represents a wholesale takeover of a collection of clear provincial jurisdictions and rights, calling it a “constitutional trojan horse” that ultimately could allow the federal government to exert authority over other areas of provincial jurisdiction.

The court ruled that the federal government cannot simply take over matters that otherwise fall within provincial authority. This supports the minority opinion that was expressed in our own Saskatchewan Court of Appeal and confirms what we have been arguing all along; that the Trudeau government does not have the authority to impose their carbon tax against the will of provincial governments, as they have done.

The ruling confirms that the federal government has no right to impose a carbon tax on some provinces but not others based on how some provinces have chosen to exercise its own legislative jurisdiction, as written under the constitution. This means that Saskatchewan has the full authority to implement our Prairie Resilience Plan to fight climate change, to reduce emissions and to do so without a federal carbon tax.

The Alberta Court of Appeal decision strengthens our resolve as we prepare to move Saskatchewan’s case to the Supreme Court of Canada. And until the Supreme Court rules, we are calling on the federal government to cancel their costly and unconstitutional carbon tax on hard-working Saskatchewan people.

Meanwhile, Ryan Meili and the NDP are not on our side. While advocating for a carbon tax, they have wrongly dismissed our legal case, calling it “a pointless crusade”.

Continued Growth Leads to Greater Investment in Education

The Saskatchewan legislature resumes sitting in March at which time our government will deliver a budget that builds on the goals outlined in the new Growth Plan.

Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan for the Next Decade is a roadmap for a growing province of 1.4 million people and a strong economy with 100,000 more jobs.

Growth affords us the ability to invest in a better quality of life for Saskatchewan families and communities – that is the purpose of growth.

A growing population and a strong Saskatchewan economy provided the means to build 46 new schools and the addition of 1300 teachers to our education system, equal to one new teacher for every eighteen new students enrolled.

Recently, the Government of Saskatchewan announced $6 million in new funding to support growing student enrolment with the purchase of 15 new relocatable classrooms for schools across the province.

An additional $5 million was announced to support the province’s Preventative Maintenance and Renewal program with funds helping school divisions address infrastructure needs in their schools.

Our government is committed to meet the needs in our classrooms, and ensure every student receives the education they deserve. While there is more to do, we know the way to address class size is to keep building classrooms and put teachers in them.

Highway 5 Passing Lanes To Improve Safety And Support Growth

As part of our commitment to safety and growth, the Government of Saskatchewan is upgrading Highway 5.

“Our Growth Plan is designed to increase exports and support sectors, such as manufacturing, agriculture and energy,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “Highway 5 is a key economic corridor in our province, linking the Saskatoon region with the rest of the country. I have personally driven the highway a number of times over the years, and have experienced the safety challenges that can surface from time to time. Whether it be a family driving to hockey practice or farmers moving equipment, I look forward to a more efficient and safer corridor for those in the region.”

A tender for segment one of Highway 5, about 10 km of widening and sight-line improvements through the hills and valleys east of the old Highway 27 to Blucher Road, has been awarded to HJR Asphalt of Saskatoon. Construction on this section is scheduled to begin in the spring and be completed this fall (2020). The total cost of the first phase is about $18.8 million.

This is a multi-year project that will be completed in three phases. Improvements to segment two, a 30 km section of Highway 5 from Blucher Road to Highway 2, passing lanes, widening of the shoulders, resurfacing, grade-line improvements, access consolidation, intersection realignment on the St. Denis access intersection treatments, and culvert replacements. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2021, with completion set for the fall of 2022.

The third and final segment will include twinning of Highway 5 from the existing section east of Saskatoon past Highway 316 to the Old 27 road. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2023. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by 2025.

Currently, traffic volumes range from 2,500 to 4,000 vehicles per day, but that number is expected to increase substantially on the west end of the corridor, which is why twinning is necessary.

The ministry hosted information sessions last summer to provide an overview and gather feedback for the design of phase one. Additional consultations will be held for phases two and three.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $9 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.

284 Impaired Driving Offences Reported In January Distracted Driving Tickets Decline For Third Consecutive Month

Getting arrested for driving impaired is a terrible way to start off the new year, as 284 people found out in January.

The January spotlight found police across the province reporting 231 Criminal Code charges for impaired driving and 53 roadside administrative suspensions.

While many New Year’s resolutions have already fallen by the wayside, it’s important to commit to drive sober or plan a safe ride home when you know you’ll be impaired by drugs or alcohol. Saskatchewan has tough consequences for impaired drivers, and impaired driving is the leading cause of death on Saskatchewan roads.

Police also focused on distracted drivers

The number of reported distracted driving offences continued to trend lower in January after seeing significant drops in both November and December. Police reported 509 tickets issued last month (including 405 for cellphone use).

Remember, distracted driving penalties increased Feb. 1, but police officers were keeping a close eye on distracted drivers long before the change, and will continue to focus on this issue.

In January, police in Saskatchewan also reported the following: • 428 tickets related to seatbelts and car seats and, •

5,563 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving.

February’s Traffic Safety Spotlight continues to be on distracted driving. Avoiding a big ticket (plus demerits, and vehicle impoundment for a repeat offence) is easy. Leave the phone alone, be wary of other behaviours that might distract you, and #JustDrive.

Third SREDA Indigenous Economic Development Scholarship Awarded

The Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA), Saskatchewan First Nations Economic Development Network (SFNEDN) and Great Plains College were proud to award the third SREDA Indigenous Economic Development Scholarship (SIEDS) to Kelly Fiddler at a luncheon on February 28.

The SIEDS scholarship was created in 2018 to recognize leaders in the Indigenous community by offering a scholarship to an Indigenous student who is actively enrolled in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Community Economic Development. The program is offered by Cape Breton University and hosted at Great Plains College Warman Campus.

“Fostering Indigenous economic development is a key pillar of SREDA’s work, and that’s why we’re committed to strengthening the next generation of Indigenous leaders,” said Alex Fallon, President and CEO of SREDA. “We’re proud to lead this initiative, along with Great Plains College and SFNEDN, to support these leaders as they gain new skills and expand their career opportunities.”

This year’s recipient, Kelly Fiddler of Martensville, saw his interest in economic development begin when taking a short tourism planning course through the Meadow Lake Tribal Council. Participating in this course led Kelly to pursue additional educational opportunities including the attainment of a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Arts degree (Native Studies), Certification as an Aboriginal Economic Development Professional through the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers and his current enrolment in the MBA program.

Throughout his previous 15 years of service in the Indigenous economic development field, Kelly has worked with many Saskatchewan organizations including the Ministry of Economy (Enterprise Saskatchewan) and others that have supported economic development and entrepreneurship of First Nation and Métis in the province. These work placements have allowed him to focus on development projects emphasizing Indigenous economic development.

Kelly is looking ahead to the ongoing benefits of the MBA program as it will allow him to add skillsets in Community Economic Development that are much needed in First Nation communities. Upon completion of the MBA program, his goal is to continue assisting First Nations in developing their important projects that will bring economic sovereignty to Indigenous people.

“We are honoured to again present this scholarship to a very deserving candidate who is dedicated to Indigenous economic development, has a history of being active in the community and continues to extend his learning growth through higher educational opportunities,” said David Keast, president and CEO at Great Plains College. “Kelly has had a great impact on the communities and organizations he has been involved with and we look forward to seeing that impact grow as he completes the MBA program.”

Students who qualify for this annual scholarship can receive $5,000 toward their education in the MBA in Community Economic Development program during their first or second year of study. When the scholarship partnership was created in 2018, a total of $20,000 was made available to provide the annual financial assistance during the fouryear agreement. SREDA invested a total of $10,000 to be spread across four academic years and the Government of Saskatchewan matched this $10,000 investment through its Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program.

“The SFNEDN is pleased to extend our congratulations to Kelly Fiddler, the 2020 recipient of the SREDA Indigenous Economic Development Scholarship,” said Charlotte Ross, Co-Chair of the SFNEDN. “I have had the honor of knowing Kelly in his undergraduate studies and can attest to the outstanding contributions he has made over the years toward Indigenous economic development in Saskatchewan.”

The MBA in Community Economic Development is offered on alternate weekends over a two-year period at Great Plains College Warman Campus through Cape Breton University. This program allows students to earn an innovative MBA while working, with a focus on strategic leadership, First Nations economic development and public policy.
