City of Martensville Working Towards Creating Partnerships With Indigenous Communities Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville has been working on an Indigenous Engagement Strategy for the community and although it is in the early stages, Martensville City Clerk Carla Budnick said that the City of Martensville is looking forward to the future of this newest venture. Currently, Mayor Muench, Deputy Mayor Chillog, Councillor Cox and Budnick are members of a Truth and Reconciliation Committee that consists of multiple surrounding communities who meet monthly. “Many of us are unsure of how to incorporate this into our work environments as well as our everyday lives, so we have speakers that come in to educate us and get everyone engaged and on the same track,” Budnick explained.

This past fall, representatives from the City of Martensville met with Derek Rope from M-R Strategies, who is helping provide input and education towards building partnerships between Martensville and indigenous communities. Rope will help to bridge the gap and will offer support on how the City of Martensville can create contacts, what information should be provided to these communities, opportunities that are available in Martensville that can be shared and more. “There are numerous opportunities that we have within our own office even, whether it is through economic development, accounting, infrastructure or other city departments. There is information that we can share that may benefit other communities,” Budnick said.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada created a Calls to Action list which they believe will redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation. There are 94 items listed, with some specifically calling on municipal governments to do their part. In a letter to the City of Martensville, Rope noted that, “Truth and Reconciliation is not simply about creating awareness. It is a call to action for continued commitment of people, communities, organizations and governments to acknowledge our collective past by understanding truth, the need to heal and our shared road to reconciliation.”

Currently, there are no partnerships created; however, the City is working on building conversations about the various opportunities that Martensville has available and learning how to showcase them. The following step would be to create meetings with the indigenous groups in order to let them know that Martensville is open to working with them. An example of how Martensville can contribute to engagement within indigenous communities would be a possible partnership with the athletes training for the North American Indigenous Games, which will be taking place in Canada in 2020. “We could discuss the options of using our facilities for training purposes. It is all about making surrounding communities aware of what our community has to offer and ways that we can work together,” said Budnick.

This fall, Martensville will be hosting the second Truth and Reconciliation education day conference put on by the Regional Reconciliation Committee, the first one was held in Warman on November 7, 2018. The event will be open to the public. “I think that many of us are unfamiliar with the history of Canadian indigenous people and what took place with the treaties and residential schools. This event provides information to those embarking on a Truth and Reconciliation journey, allowing people to hear stories and have questions answered.”

Although Saskatoon has been creating partnerships with indigenous groups for years, not all municipalities have created a way to bridge the gap. Budnick explained that for Martensville, their goal is to continue learning and educating themselves as well as the community so they can get to the point where the partnerships are built and then that connection can begin to incorporate into their every day practices. “We want to make Martensville an inviting community for everyone.”

Through the education that she has already gotten throughout this journey, Budnick has learned much about the living conditions, past experiences and acknowledges that although we all live within the same province, our lives are completely different. “It is history that we need to know. It happened, and there is a lot of stereotyping that takes place within our province. They say that it will take seven generations to get things turned around because a lot of it is learned behavior. It is up to every one of us to help change this behavior,” Budnick commented.

More information about the Indigenous Engagement Strategy will be available once set plans are in place.

Sask Parks Launches New Reservation System

The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport launched a new, upgraded online reservation system today for the 2019 camping season.

“With campsite reservations kicking off in just a couple of weeks, we are excited to offer our customers a new reservation site with a fresh look and feel,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “The new system will provide more online services and a better overall experience when campers are booking their favourite campsites.”

All customers will be required to create a new account with the upgraded system. For a smooth booking process, campers are urged to set up their accounts prior to reservations opening.

It is also suggested that campers take some time to browse the site over the next couple of weeks to become familiar with the new design and features.

Campers can access the reservation site at http://saskparks.goingtocamp.com.

Reservations open April 2 for seasonal sites, April 4 for group camping sites, and April 8 to 18 for nightly sites. For more information, visit www.saskparks.com.

Protect your Property and Be Ready for Spring Thaw

With prolonged cold temperatures and snow accumulation, and now moving into milder climates, we are expecting a rapid melt. This may lead to seepage of water into basement or water to accumulate on property. We are all responsible to protect our own property and mitigate any potential risks. Provided are some helpful tips and tasks to help prevent water seeping into your basement or accumulating on your property.

1. Extend downspouts at least two metres (six feet) from your basement walls. The further the water is from the foundation, the less chance that it will make its way into your basement. Splash pads can help direct the water to a permeable surface, such as a garden or lawn. Clear debris from your eavestroughs (gutters) to prevent them from overflowing. If your eavestroughs or downspouts overflow even when they are clean, install larger ones.

2. Consider moving snow away from the foundation of your home, to prevent a large degree of melting immediately adjacent to your foundation.

3. Ensure proper grading around your home and property or build up the ground slope around your home. Soil should slope down from your foundation and window wells for at least two to three metres (about six to ten feet) at a drop of at least 10-20 centimetres (about four to eight inches). If water soaks into the ground within the backfill zone, it will accumulate next to your basement walls and floor, where it can leak in or damage the foundation. Check your ground slope annually, because soil, sidewalks, patios, decks and driveways can settle over time. You can find grade elevation information on Martensville. ca 4. Check the drainage paths on your property. Ensure that storm water flows to the lane or street, not towards your home. It also shouldn’t flow into your neighbour’s yard.

Property should be graded to keep water flowing in the right direction. If water pools on your property, consider pumping it to the street.

5. Fix leaks in basement walls, floors, windows and doors.

6. If you have protective plumbing, such as backflow valves and sump pumps, make sure they are working properly.

7. If you are away from your property for a period (2-3 days) have someone check the property to ensure water is not coming into the basement.

8. Elevate and/or store important equipment and personal items as to avoid damage in case of water seepage.

City crews will ensure streets, catch basins, and drain ways are clear to ensure the spring melt does not back up on city streets and onto properties so we can all enjoy and have a worry-free spring.

The first Canadian NHL team has clinched a spot for the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs and that team is the Calgary Flames. A loss by the Minnesota Wild on Sunday solidified a spot for the Flames in post-season.

Calgary sits first in the Pacific Division, first in the Western Conference, and second overall in the NHL with a 44-21-7 record (95 points) with 10 games remaining. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the next best Canadian team based on points with 91.

Toronto has been struggling lately and has given up 23 goals and won just once in their last four games. The Leafs are firmly in third place in the Atlantic Division and trying to catch the Boston Bruins for home ice advantage when the two meet in the first round of the playoffs.

The Winnipeg Jets are in a battle of their own as they are just one point ahead of the Nashville Predators for top spot in the Central Division. Both the Jets and the Preds have a 5-5-0 record in their last 10 games but Nashville has played two more games than the Jets. That’s it for Canadian teams in the post-season.

The Montreal Canadiens are three points back of the final Wild Card spot in the East and are relying on Carey Price to carry them into the playoffs. Montreal has a 4-6-0 record in their last ten and are going to need more wins than that in their final ten games if they want a shot at the post-season.

Two other Canadian teams have a very slim chance of making playoffs. Edmonton (71 points) and Vancouver (70 points) are at the back of five teams within eight points of the last Wild Card spot in the West. Chicago, Colorado and Minnesota are also vying for the final spot.

SPORTS Hear Those Lions Roar

Last year the Saskatchewan Hockey Association made a new ruling that any girls living outside of Saskatoon would not be allowed to register for Saskatoon minor hockey teams. This included the Comets that accommodated many girls from the northern regions. This did not stop those girls that wanted to continue playing the game they loved. They entered teams based out of Warman, called the Wildcat Lions that consists of girls from Warman, Martensville, Langham, Hague, Delisle, Dundurn and Asquith. They were able to get a Midget AA team, a Bantam and two Pee Wee teams. They also had an all-girl Initiation and Novice team as well.

This Lion Peewee team, coached by Todd Lacoursiere, is playing with a lot of heart in the Peewee B division in the SMHA league and were at the top of their division as they headed into playoffs. They were hard to beat in league play and earned a bye in the first round of playoffs after finishing first. Martensville has three players on the Lion’s team; Ella Stow, Alexis Randall, and Bobbi Lightburn. The Peewee Lions dropped their first game in the semi-final playoff game which was their first loss after winning 17 straight and only their second loss this season. They defeated the Wild Stallions 5-1 on Tuesday to advance to the final against the Bobcat Flames. The Lions need to beat the Flames twice for the league Championship.

They are also on a big run in the Female Provincial B playoffs. They faced Northeast in the first round defeating them 6-0 and 6-4 to advance to round two against Turtleford. They continued their momentum in the second-round defeating Turtleford in two games 4-1 and 6-1. They came out as the Northern champions and are playing the Southern Champions - Weyburn, where the winner will become Provincial A Peewee Female champions. Games are slated for the end of March.

One of the accolades the Peewee Lions received this year was bringing home the silver medal in November at the prestigious Wickfest in Calgary. This tournament consisted of 110 female hockey teams from Atom to Midget. The Peewee team had a special visit from Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser which was a highlight. They are competing in a Female March Ice tournament this weekend in Saskatoon.

Lacoursiere is very happy with the Lion’s first year together. It’s not always easy gelling as a unit when you are combining seven communities together. He attributes part of the team’s success this year to the bonding the team has done both on and off the ice. They attend events off the ice as a group such as Blades and Huskie games. “They have become more than team mates, they have become friends and they play for each other out there on the ice,” commented Lacoursiere. “I am very proud of each girl on this team and they make coaching very easy and enjoyable.”

The Martensville Minor Hockey Association is also trying to keep female hockey growing in the area. They are offering all girls Initiation, Novice and Atom teams for the 2020 season. The teams will be called the Martensville Mavens. MMHA is offering ice time on March 23 from 10:4512:00 for any girls interested in trying hockey. Come out for a skate.

Negative Ads Just Need to be Truthful

This week, the Saskatchewan government embarks on what is its most positive advertisement; its annual budget.

Budgets are filled with thinly veiled propaganda where the government of the day, regardless of political stripe, promotes its spending your tax dollars for your benefit.

Actually, that’s a bit of a harsh assessment. We do, after all, select government by virtue of not only how various parties choose to spend our tax dollars but also how many of our tax dollars they choose to collect. While it might seem government and its seemingly limitless ability to hire communication and spend our tax dollars on questionable self-promotion, it’s just as easy for an Opposition to zero in on a budget item, which has the public or even a special interest group rather riled.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, either because scrutiny is what oppositions should be doing. Really, it’s how politics works: You promote yourself with a positive message; you criticize your opponent by dwelling on the negatives in either their policies or promises, and an only expectation is that everyone is relatively truthful about it … although what’s true and what’s not is often in the eyes of the beholder. So it’s a little dangerous for opposition politicians, or any politicians, to start griping about governments portraying them in a negative way through advertisements or otherwise.

Recently, NDP Opposition leader Ryan Meili has been rather vocal that a Sask. Party TV ad about him is negative American-style politics. Well, let’s quickly examine the ad to see what’s inaccurate and what’s fair and reasonable criticism.

We should likely start by noting it seems a bit petty for the Sask. Party to use a grainy black and white image of Meili skateboarding. He does, so it’s accurate. But why is it relevant to anyone?

On the more substantive issues, Meili did say Saskatchewan should “consider a modest carbon tax”. While he does not specifically support the current federal carbon tax that will be $50 a tonne by 2022, what he’s said doesn’t exactly contradict federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna’s plan.

Moreover, he did call the Sask. Party’s Constitutional challenge against the carbon tax “a pointless crusade.” It’s also true he spoke at an anti-pipeline rally with signs saying: “keep it the ground.” However, it should be noted the rally was to protest the Husky oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River, which many communities rightly complained about at the time. And Meili’s speech did not oppose pipelines.

Yes, there was a radical element there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Meili shares their views. That said, Meili has complained about Premier Scott Moe allowing his ministers to attend yellow vest rallies that have also had radicals in their crowds spouting extreme views.

Where Meili seems to right about the Sask. Party ad being misleading is the line that states: “When it was time to fight Trudeau’s equalization plan that hurts provinces like Saskatchewan, he didn’t say anything at all.”

About the only thing Meili has ever said on the equalization fight is completely true, that the Sask. Party government could have helped changed equalization a decade ago, but refused to for seemingly partisan political reasons.

Former Premier Brad Wall cancelled a legal challenge against former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper for reneging on his 2006 election promise to remove natural resources from the equalization formula. This promise would have meant an extra $800 million a year for Saskatchewan and was supported by both the NDP and Sask.

Party.

Instead, the Sask. Party is now proposing distributing half the equalization money on a per capita basis - a policy that most benefits Quebec and Ontario and hurts small “havenot” Atlantic provinces.

Police Issue Multiple Suspensions to Intoxicated Drivers March 5, 2019 at 10:40 p.m. Police received a complaint of a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 12 near Martensville.

Police attended the scene and found that the 38 year old female driver appeared to have consumed alcohol. She was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. She was released a short time later on a 72 hour driving suspension.

Charges Laid in Local Business Theft March 4, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. Police received a complaint of theft from a business near Martensville.

The caller reported that someone entered their locked compound and stole a number of items.

Police arrested and charged a 42 year old male from Saskatoon. He was released for an upcoming court date on theft related charges.

Martensville Man Found Safe After Well Being Check March 8, 2019 at 4:55 p.m. Police received a request for a well being check on a person in Martensville. The caller reported that they were unable to contact a family member and were concerned for their well being. Police attended the residence and spoke with the 75 year old male who was safe and sound.

March 8, 2019 at 10:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of a possible intoxicated driver in a vehicle outside a business in Martensville.

Police attended the business and arrested a 39 year old male from Osler. He was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. He was released a short time later on a 72 hour driving suspension.

Investigation Continues in Martensville Vehicle Thefts March 11, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. Police received a complaint of theft of a truck in Martensville. The caller advised that their vehicle was parked in the garage when it went missing. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

March 13, 2019 at 9:10 a.m.

Police received a complaint of theft of a vehicle from a residence in Martensville.

The caller reported that the vehicle was parked outside of the residence when it went missing. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Police Respond to Complaint of Loud Party March 9, 2019 at 11:15 p.m. Police received a complaint of a loud party in Martensville.

Police attended the residence and spoke to the owner of the residence who agreed to shut the party down.

There were no further calls received from the residence. There were no charges.

COFFEE WITH A COP

Warman RCMP are advising residents of Warman that “Coffee with a Cop” will be taking place at the McDonald’s Restaurant in Warman on March 27th at 10:00am and at the Tim Horton’s in Martensville on March 26th at 10am.

RCMP members will be in attendance at both locations and this provides a chance to ask questions and get to know the police officers in your city.

Everyone is invited to attend.

The Kinsmen Football League sponsored a coach’s clinic this past weekend at the new indoor facility at Gordie Howe to teach local coaches some new skills and drills. The Uof S Huskie coaches and players were on hand to put high school students through some drills while coaches observed.

Scott Flory, Head coach of the Huskies, as well as coaches, Friesen, Long, Dmytryshyn, Houle, and Hillis, were part of the coaching crew on hand. Guest coach and Grey Cup champion with the Stampeders and Huskies alumni, Julian Lynch, was also there to assist. The Maddogs sent some coaches to the clinic, as well as Martensville Royals players, Kyler Frasier and Brody Nelson, who were part of the high school students in attendance.

The Huskie Elite Skills clinic focused on defensive backs, QB’s, linebackers, receivers and runningbacks. This is an opportunity for students grades 8-11 to enhance their positional skills for the upcoming season. There were players from all across Saskatchewan and even some from Calgary attending. Nelson won an award for outstanding runningback while Fraser won for the receivers.

There is another camp next weekend, March 24 for offensive and defensive linemen. Just a reminder that Fall Maddog registration opens online May 1, 2019.
