Organics Service is Underway!

Organics pick-ups resumed on May 6th for the North-side of Martensville and May 13th for the South-side. This service is scheduled on Fridays and alternates between north and south until the end of October. Water Meter Conversion Program - Thank you for your Cooperation, Book Today!

The City of Martensville initiated a program where existing water meters will be replaced with new automated water meters. Neptune Technology Group will be installing the meters by area and will be contacting homeowners to make appointments for the change-out. The program is over 75% complete. If you have yet to book your meter change-out it can be done easily online at www.watermeterappt.com or by calling 1-800-667-4387. Bookings can work around your schedule and be made for evenings or weekends. The actual change-out can be completed in about 20 minutes. These meters will provide automated reads on regular intervals ensuring accuracy without the need for manual reads. Lifting of the Public Health Order- What you Should Know

Saskatchewan’s current public health orders have been lifted, effective February 28, 2022. City Hall and all civic facilities are open and available for business with the public. Civic facilities are a ‘mask-friendly’ environment, meaning the City of Martensville respects all individuals’ freedom to don a mask for their comfort and safety.

Let’s keep our Lanes Clean, Fall Back Lane Clean-up

Placing garbage, materials or waste in our lanes is unsightly, can attract pests, be unsafe and impede maintenance or access to properties. The City of Martensville conducts an annual back lane and general clean-up once a year with this year’s dates being: September 12th -16th for the Southside September 19th -23rd for the Northside. Items may be placed for pick-up one week prior to scheduled pick-up. In the interim please utilize the Loraas Landfill. Waste placed in lanes prior to this time regulated under the Nuisance Abatement Bylaw and is subject to enforcement.

Police Look For Assistance in Locating Theft Suspect

Warman RCMP is seeking assistance through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers to identify a male suspect that was involved in a theft from a hardware store in Warman on November 14, 2021. If you can identify this male, contact Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers via Facebook, or by calling call 1-800-2228477 to leave an anonymous tip. If your tip leads to an arrest or charge, you may be eligible for a reward of up to $2000.

Police Advise of Fraudulent Activity The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Section is warning the public of scams victimizing older adults. The scam begins with a computer pop-up window or phone call claiming that the computer or device has been hacked, and that action needs to be taken to stop it. Victims will often speak to someone by phone who claims to be police, or some other authority, who will tell them they need to withdraw or transfer funds in order to protect them from the fictional ‘hackers’. Victims are then directed to make payments to the fraudsters via Bitcoin, pre-paid cards, or bank transfer. The SPS would like to remind the public that scammers use fear and panic to commit their crimes. Take time to consider what’s happening and talk about it with friends or family before sending money anywhere. Scammers will pose as government authorities and use multiple techniques to appear legitimate. Remember, authorities will not demand payment in Bitcoin or gift cards, or direct members of the public to move funds to ‘protect’ them. Any concerns about the security of financial accounts should be discussed with the financial institution prior to removing or transferring funds. Parenteau Brothers Meadworks has been providing a variety of flavours of Honey Wine (Mead) since the Fall of 2017. This year marks their third year at the Martensville Farmer’s Market; however, their primary sales outlet is the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market. From there, they were interested in participating in other local markets in order to expand their customer base. The business was started by Connor Parenteau, who is the main meadmaker, and his father Ian does the selling at the Farmer’s Markets, which include the outdoor open air Martensville Farmer's Market on Wednesdays, Warman Farmer's Market on

Thursdays, Blaine Lake Farmer's Market on Fridays, and indoors at the Saskatoon Farmers Market near the YXE Airport on Saturdays and Sundays year round. “We consider our Honey Wine to be "value added processing of a local agricultural product",” Ian Parenteau explained. “There is a social aspect to customers getting out to meet vendors and talk about their locally made products. Some people have allergies or other health concerns about the foods they consume, and for many it is good to have a direct relationship with the people who are producing your food,” Parenteau added. Martensville Farmer’s Market Sets New Hours

The Martensville Farmer’s Market kicked off their 2022 season on Wednesday, May 18th, and currently has approximately 13 registered vendors. The Market is located in the Corner Store parking lot, located at 301 Centennial Drive North and run Wednesday’s from 4pm-8pm until September. Vendors include; Karen’s Kitchen, Love It Food & Beauty Inc., Meadworks Meadery, Smooth 42, Special Treats 4 Special feet, The Bag Ladies, BKN Jewellers, Close to Home Greenhouse, Rave BBQ Rubs, Pioneer Meats, with fresh fruits and vegetables arriving this month. Cones Looks To Continue Success As They Prepare For Second Season Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Last year, high school students Carson Heuchert, Alex Garchinski and Wyatt Strueby did something that most kids their age aren’t doing during the summer months; run their own business. The three best friends decided that they wanted to make some extra money and wanted something a little more unique than the typical jobs that most high school students are working throughout the summer, so they decided that they would work for themselves and open an ice cream shop in Martensville – thus began Cones Ice Cream. This year, there are plans to have some more options available such as new ice cream flavors and more non-dairy options for their customers, and the Cones team also plans to make an effort to become more involved in the community as well. “Our goal is to be more than just an ice cream stand and find more outlets for us to reach out and be a bigger part of the community,” Garchinski said. Hours of operation run 3pm-9pm on weekdays and 1pm-9pm on weekends to accommodate school schedules; however, once the school year is done, hours will expand. This year marks the senior year for all three young men, and as of right now, plans for a third season at Cones are unknown; however, they are just looking forward to the upcoming summer at the moment. For all three, the memories of spending time in Kinsmen Park and enjoying ice cream while growing up remain strong and they want to share that with others. “We can’t say for sure what next year holds, but we know for now that we are going to have a blast doing what we love again this summer. Our goal is that we don’t ever want to see Martensville go another summer without an ice cream shack though. Whether it be us, other kids that we can show the ropes to or someone else, it would be nice to see Cones continue as a staple of this community,” Garchinski stated. Additionally, the trio learned about how important community is. “We saw first-hand how something as simple as ice cream can bring people together. Sweet N Silly KinderCare Offers Fun Social Learning for Growing Minds Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

Ron Biberdorf, Principal of Venture Heights school in Martensville, saw a need for an educational, fun program for kindergarten kids that could be available every day of the week. Keeping them in a school like routine, Biberdorf, along with Educational Assistant Jaimie Doell, came up with a program called Sweet N Silly KinderCare. This program started in the 2021/2022 school year and is an extension of learning that is run full days on the opposite days of kindergarten, allowing continued learning opportunities for little growing minds. Open to all Kindergarten students in Martensville and surrounding area, it is currently run this year on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. “If I receive enough registration for days opposite of Venture Heights Kindergarten days, we can run Monday through Friday in the 2022/2023 school year,” said Doell. This fun social building program offers educational activities, library time, sensory play, dress up, and free time play stations. Students also get to take part in small science experiments, crafting, outside exploring and learning. Sweet N Silly KinderCare is located at Venture Heights School and runs from 8:30am – 3:15 pm. Before and After Care hours are 7:30am – 5pm. They provide supervised outside recess, and indoor body breaks when weather does not co-operate. Doell stated, “I also host day off care from 7:30am – 5pm for days such as PD days, Days in Lieu, and February/Easter Breaks. This isn’t just for Kindergarten age, this is for ALL K-8 students from anywhere in the Valley. There are limited spots for these days and the cost will be $35 per student.” Registration is now open for the 2022/2023 year. Buster Days Weekend Draws large crowd Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville Buster Days took place from June 3-5 and offered a wide variety of events and activities throughout the weekend for people of all ages. Currently, the Buster Days committee doesn’t have any final numbers of how many attended events, or how much money was raised; however, one thing they do know, is that there was a lot of people in attendance. “We had so many people come out to take part in Buster Days and are so happy with the end result. The weather thankfully cooperated so everyone could enjoy the weekend and celebrate one of Martensville’s biggest events. It was a very successful weekend from our standpoint,” Buster Days organizer Angie Reddekopp stated. This was the first Buster Days held in Martensville since 2019, and from the looks of things, the community was ready to get out of their homes following

the pandemic. Although some events saw less attendance, such as the Slo-Pitch tournament and the Family Picnic, other events saw record breaking numbers. Reddekopp noted that events such as the Fun for All at the MAP, Swim Night, Corgi Races, Fireworks and the pancake breakfast saw high attendance. “This weekend, I could feel the sense of community when I was out and about and it felt so great. People were out enjoying themselves again with nothing holding them back and you could see our community thriving.” Corgi Races made a debut appearance this year, and when preparing for the event, seating was provided for approximately 50-75 people; however, over 600 people showed up. More than 35 corgis participated in the race and provided great entertainment for the crowd, all for a worthwhile cause. Through these races, approximately $3000 was raised in admission feeds that will all be going to the SPCA.

“We were caught off guard at how popular that event was, but were so happy to see people enjoying something new to Buster Days,” Reddekopp said. Another new addition to Buster Days was Club 55 events, which was created to provide an opportunity for older adults in the community to take part in activities as well. “We want Buster Days to encompass everyone of all ages and hope that Club 55 will continue to grow in upcoming years,” Reddekopp added. The Buster Days Committee is welcoming suggestions for any activities that people would like to see or do for Club 55 in the future by contacting Angie Reddekopp at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion. “Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped out this year. We wouldn’t be able to do this event without your support and contributions.” The Buster Days Committee is always looking for new members to help with this event. Smokehaus Makes Announcement During Buster Days Parade

Cabinet Shuffles Need to be a Job Hiring Processs You need to apply some caution whenever you hear about how government should be run like a business; however, there are some similarities and common principles when it comes to hiring and promotion. Like in business, we need the right combination of experience, intelligence, talent and enthusiasm when we are hiring our managers in government to run things. This should be the things any premier is thinking about when he shuffles his cabinet, along with who possesses the best people skills. But the added problem is premiers have a talent pool from which to choose that’s limited to those in government caucus. Furthermore, premiers must adhere to regional and gender considerations. With that in mind, pity the limited choices Premier Scott Moe had to make in his comparatively large caucus. Framing his cabinet selection around Saskatchewan’s "never before opportunity” for growth and global exports, Moe stuck with pretty much the same cabinet as he had. Added to cabinet were Jeremy Cockrill (The Battlefords) as highways minister replacing Fred Bradshaw and Dana Skoropad (Arm River) as environment minister replacing Warren Kaeding. Jim Reiter gets the plum Minister of Energy job, replacing Bronwyn Eyre who become the Minister of Justice and Attorney General. Former justice minister Gordon Wyant moves to Advanced Education, while former advanced education minister Gene Makowsky moves to social services minster to replace Lori Carr who becomes Minister of SaskBuilds, Procurement, Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission, and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority. Ten of the remaining 18 ministers stay where they were: Donna Harpauer, Deputy Premier and Finance; Don Morgan, Crown Investments Corporation responsible for SaskEnergy, SGI, SaskPower, SaskTel, SaskGaming and SaskWater plus Labour; Dustin Duncan, Education; Christine Tell, Corrections, Policing and Public Safety; Jeremy Harrison, Trade and Export Development; David Marit, Agriculture; Paul Merriman, Health; Don McMorris; Government Relation and First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs; Laura Ross, Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, and; Everett Hindley, Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health. Meanwhile, 11 backbenchers get added legislative secretarial duties including Lyle Stewart (assigned to the premier and responsible for provincial autonomy); David Buckingham (SaskTel and SGI); Doug Steele (SaskPower and SaskEnergy) Todd Goudy (education); Ken Francis (trade and export); Terry Dennis (Ukraine Relations); Alana Ross (forestry); Daryl Harrison (value-added agriculture and livestock engagement); Jim Lemaigre (mental health addictions seniors ad rural and remote health); Terry Jenson (social services) and; Marvin Friesen (parks, culture and sport). The fact that veterans with cabinet experience like Steven Bonk and Ken Cheveldayoff were left out seems a little strange. Similarly strange is the mandate Moe gave Eyre to “defend Saskatchewan interests" even if that means “we are going to have to use the Constitution to do it we will.” Former Justice Minister Gord Wyant has studied constitutional law and surely has more legal experience. Or is this shuffle about something other than getting the best people in the right positions to do the best job possible? It’s no small coincidence that Moe and this government are taking heat from those supporting Nadine Wilson’s new United Party for not taking the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s federal government to the courts on COVID-19 restrictions. Much of that fight may be over, but it just might be that small parties on the right are beginning to chip away at the Sask. Party base. Also by small coincidence, new cabinet ministers Cockrill and Skoropad represent ridings where right-wing discontent with this Sask. Party government has been very vocal. One would hope cabinet selection would be strictly limited to qualifications, but such hiring sometimes doesn’t work that way in politics. Sometimes, cabinet shuffles are about making a political statement. For Moe, this cabinet shuffle may be one of those times when it’s also about the politics.

The Martensville Free Pantry is currently in need of donations for a variety of food items, including; pasta, pasta sauce, canned vegetables, cereal, pork and beans, tea/coffee, potatoes (whole or boxed), rice, lunch snacks, canned meat, macaroni and cheese, soda crackers and other non-perishable items. Although the MFP is located within the Civic Centre, there are various drop off locations available throughout Martensville where items can be donated. Drop off boxes can be found at City Hall, the MAP and at the Co-op Food Store. If you have a large donation, contact martensvillefreepantry@gmail.com to arrange for someone to meet you at the Civic Centre. Money donations can be made by sending transfers to martensvillefreepantry@gmail.com, and all donations go directly into a pantry business account. Gift cards are also accepted. If you are in need of a food hamper, contact the email address above. Hampers are distributed each Wednesday at 1pm. Track & Field Returns to VHS On June 1st Venture Heights School held their annual Track and Field Day after a long break due to COVID 19. Grades 1-6 participated in events such as; long jump, high jump, hurdles, meter distanced running and ball throw. The event was a huge success with a large turnout, not only for students, but parents as well. “It was a great opportunity to have parent participation and interaction once again in our school,” Charma Mcintyre, VHS Administrative Assistant, stated.
