Martensville Fire Department Responds to Power Pole Fire

Martensville Fire Department (MFD) responded to a power pole fire on Thursday May 30, 2019 at 00:19 a.m. The fire was located at Lutheran Road and Rg Rd 3053 (10 Ave South).

The fire was contained to two power poles, a ditch and a field. No structures were damaged.

MFD responded with one pumper and one grass truck. First arriving crews found the fire spreading from one power pole to another and advancing into the ditch and open field. Martensville Fire Department waited for Sask Power to turn power off to the power poles and ensure the areas was safe to fight the fire. The fire was called under control at 01:40 a.m.

MFD remained on scene to make sure all hot spots were extinguished.

Probable cause of the fire is an electrical issue with the power pole.

A group of youngsters decided to do their part to help improve one of Martensville’s parks. Throughout Buster Days weekend, the group set up a Treats and Drink stand on the corner of 1st Avenue South and 1st Street South in order to help raise money to be used towards the rejuvenation of Andrea’s Park.

A poster was attached to their stand that explained, “In 1998, the City of Martensville created a beautiful park in memory of 8 year old Andrea Kaminskas; a sweet girl who tragically lost her life at a young age. Families of Martensville and area have been enjoying this play and green space ever since.”

The City of Martensville has plans to renovate the park in 2020, and members of the Kaminskas family and friends of Andrea’s Park are doing their part to ensure this is possible. “The park is now in desperate need of renovation to ensure it remains a safe place for children to play. Together, we hope to rejuvenate this space in Andrea’s loving memory.”

Save Water and Save on Your Utility Bills!

Water Conservation Tips

• Water your lawn deeply, but not more than once a week. During periods of extended rain, water even less frequently.

• Water new lawns every other day until the grass reaches 5 cm; then water less frequently.

• Set a tuna can in each of your sprinkler zones and time how long it takes to fill it with water. That’s how long you should run your sprinkler once a week if your lawn is dry.

• Use drip irrigation and/or sprinkler systems that are timed to turn on and off automatically. Remember to turn them off if it’s raining.

• Don’t water your lawn during the hottest time of the day. Instead, water early in the morning or in the evening. Don’t water when it’s rainy or windy.

• Check the sprinkler position to make sure you don’t waste water by watering the street, sidewalks or driveway.

• Xeriscape Landscaping – Group plants according to their watering needs. Plant water-saving plants, trees and shrubs. Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. All of this can save 10-35 litres of water per minute.

• When mowing your lawn, only cut the top 1/3 of the grass and leave clippings behind. They will help the soil retain moisture and provide natural fertilizer.

• Wash your car at the car wash. Washing at home with a hose for ten minutes uses 300 litres of water and sends soap, oil and other chemicals to the river through storm drains. At a car wash, run-off is captured and disposed of properly.

• Use a broom when cleaning your driveway or walkway. Washing with a hose uses almost 200 litres of water.

Indoor Water Conservation Tips • When you want a drink, don’t let the water run until it is cold. Instead, refrigerate a jug of tap water and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t let the tap run when rinsing dishes or washing fruit and vegetables and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Instead, scrape off food first using a spatula. Soak very dirty pans and dishes before washing.

• Run the dishwasher only when it’s fully loaded and save 70-190 litres of water with each load you eliminate.

• Repair any leaks. Turn faucets off firmly. Check and replace any worn out fixtures, washers, O-rings and hose connections.

• Avoid using garbage disposals. Disposals require lots of water to operate properly.

Instead, start a compost pile.

• Save as much as 10 litres of water per minute with a low-flow showerhead.

• Don’t overfill and fill less than a full bath. Better yet, you’ll save water by taking a short shower instead.

• Replace an old toilet with a water-efficient model and save as much as 14 litres of water per flush and 70 litres per person, per day • Check for leaks in your toilet by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank.

Coloring will appear in the toilet bowl if it’s leaking.

• Run the washing machine only when it’s fully loaded. Each load you eliminate saves 70-190 litres of water.

• Check washing machine hoses for cracks that could result in leaks.

• Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks. Read the water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.

MHS Creates Display to Show Treaty Pride

Martensville Fire Department responded to a grass fire on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 6:06 p.m. located at Lutheran Road and Range Rd 3053. The fire was contained to the field area.

MFD responded with one pumper, two grass trucks and a tanker. First arriving crews found the fire spreading southbound in the field and threatening power poles.

The fire was quickly brought under control.

Martensville Fire remained on scene to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.

Probable cause of the fire was sparking from power lines.

MHS is proudly located on Treaty 6 territory. We recently visually acknowledged this with a new installation in our MHS foyer to show that we are all Treaty people.

Students from Venture Heights Elementary School took home the first, second, and third place awards in their recent track meet.

City of Martensville House Fire

Martensville Fire Department responded to an extinguished house fire on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 8:06 p.m. MFD responded with one pumper. The home received extensive damage to the kitchen area along with smoke damage to the remaining parts of the house. There were no injuries as a result of this fire. Martensville Fire remained on scene to do salvage and overhaul of the kitchen area and to make sure all hot spots were extinguished. MFD members also gave oxygen to a dog via a pet oxygen mask who had been exposed to smoke from the fire.

The cause of the fire was due to a pot on the stove being left on and unattended when power was restored after a power outage.

Martensville Fire Department reminds people to make sure that stoves and heating items should be turned off when the power goes out to prevent possible fires when power is restored.

Buster Days Combined With Hot Weather Draws Large Crowds Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Another Buster Days is in the books. The event packed weekend drew crowds from Martensville and the surrounding area to take part in the festivities.

Once again, the event provided something for all ages such as the always popular parade, pancake breakfast, slo-pitch tournament, numerous activities at the MAP, road hockey, a family movie night, church service and much much more.

“We would like to thank everyone that helped make this event a success once again. It takes a lot of hard work, but looking around this weekend and seeing all of the smiling faces let you know that the work was worth it.

It was a ton of fun and we had a lot of people come out to enjoy the activities and the nice weather,” Jessica Loran, City of Martensville Program Coordinator II, said.

May 28, 2019 at 4:20 p.m. Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident on Highway 12 near Martensville. Police attended the scene and found that an SUV attempted to cross Highway 12 when it was struck by a north bound motorcycle.

The 47 year old female driver of the motorcycle received serious injuries in the accident. The 51 year old female driver of the SUV was issued a ticket for proceeding from a stop sign before safe to do so.

Trudeau Aims North to Pull Out Sask. Seat

Can you imagine the federal Liberals emerging from this fall’s national election with more seats in Saskatchewan than they already have? Admittedly, it takes a fair bit of imagination and it will take more than a little luck on the Liberals’ part. But it is possible … even though it’s likely difficult to see from the vantage of rural Saskatchewan.

If you live anywhere in this province, you have had a pretty steady diet of frustrations with the federal Liberal government. It started long-before the boisterous opposition from Premier Scott Moe and federal Opposition leader Andrew Scheer to the carbon tax imposed on April 1 and it certainly won’t end until the federal ballots are in box this October.

One gets that there are elements of this debate driven by politics - the notion that no one likes paying more taxes for anything, but what we can’t forget that we are a resource-based economy, dependent on oil, gas, mining and, of course, agriculture. All of these things are large-scale greenhouse gas emitters. Our electrical needs are currently powered by burning coal.

For however much politics there has been in the opposition to the carbon tax, there is no doubt that it does disproportionally hammer a large GHG emitter like Saskatchewan. Add in other problems like the inability to sell canola into China, arguably, a problem not of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, but one that the Liberals are struggling to solve and there’s more reason not to vote Liberal than there was four years ago and let us remember that Saskatchewan voters weren’t exactly eager to vote Liberal in 2015. Ralph Goodale in Regina Wascana was the Liberals only success.

Given the anger over both Trudeau and his government policies that we now see, there is no guarantee that even Goodale is safe this time, but that Goodale has held on to a Saskatchewan seat nearly for three decades now reminds us that Saskatchewan voters are never completely uniform in their views and not all Saskatchewan voters share the same level of disdain for the current federal administration. This is something that Trudeau and his strategists obviously recognized prior to the Prime Minister’s trip to Saskatchewan late last month to exonerate the Cree leader Chief Poundmaker. It wasn’t so much this ceremony in which Trudeau declared: “The Government of Canada recognizes that Chief Poundmaker was not a criminal, but someone who worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of his people.”

This did seem to be about righting a historical wrong. Moreover, this is the Battlefords-Lloydminster federal riding that has been conservative for 30 years, but after Trudeau left the Poundmaker ceremony, he headed to the spring assembly of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) at the Flying Dust First Nation north of Meadow Lake. Then it was off to a Liberal fundraiser in Meadow Lake for star Desnethe-MissinippiChurchill River candidate Tammy Cook-Searson.

Clearly, Trudeau and the Liberals have identified a political opportunity in Saskatchewan that others might have overlooked. Of course, there’s still the problem of Trudeau’s relationship with First Nations people that has been scarred by unfulfilled promises and the whole Jody Wilson-Raybould affair and it won’t make all that much difference to Saskatchewan’s representation in Ottawa that will still be dominated by a heavy Conservative presence, but in what could be a very close election in which every seat may count, one can’t overlook a seat like DesnetheMissinippi-Churchill River.

Nor should we forget that there still is a diversity of views in this province - even when what you mostly hear sounds like unanimity. As we found out in 2015 when Trudeau came from third place to win, elections can be unpredictable affairs.

Canada and Saskatchewan can celebrate after attempts by the B.C. NDP government to block the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and future pipeline projects were recently struck down by the B.C. Court of Appeal.

The unanimous 5-0 decision recognizes and makes clear that B.C. cannot limit oil from another province, and reaffirms that building pipelines and getting our sustainable energy to market is in the national interest.

The B.C. NDP government says it plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan NDP are silent, as they always are when it comes to supporting Saskatchewan’s most important jobs and industries.

The ball is now in the federal government’s court to get Trans Mountain approved right away and send a clear signal that other pipeline projects are possible.

Federal Gov’t Needs to Deliver on Canola Payments

Changes to federal Advance Payment Program to help canola producers announced on May 1st are still not available and producers have been told by federal officials that they may not be in place until months from now. This is way too late for canola producers who are already close to completing seeding.

The federal government needs to make the changes to the Advance Payment Program they committed to. This is critical to agricultural producers who are facing uncertainty in international markets. Your Saskatchewan Party government has reached out and is calling on the federal Agriculture Minister to get this fixed immediately.

Japan Reopening Market to Canadian Beef

Recently, we learned Japan is reopening their doors to Canadian beef over 30 months of age. This restriction has been in place since 2005 with the border closed since 2003. I am pleased to see the government of Japan’s recognition of the quality and safety of Canadian beef of all ages.

We continue to work to open up markets for Saskatchewan products, and will continue to advocate for our Saskatchewan industries at home and around the world.

Nine football players from Martensville ranging in age from 13-15 have been provided with an incredible opportunity. These players have the chance to participate in the Provincial U16 team in a Western Canadian Tournament in Kamloops this July.

Leading up to the event, the North Saskatchewan team and the South Saskatchewan team will be holding games in both Saskatoon and Regina. On Saturday, June 8th, a game will be held at SMF Field at 7pm in Saskatoon, the following Saturday’s game will be held at Leibel Field in Regina. Following these home games, the Provincial U16 team will be created from players on the North Sask and South Sask teams and that team will represent the province in Kamloops.

Players competing from Martensville include; Parker Peterson, Quinton Pike, Chase Wendt, Brody Dyck, Brody Nelson, Toryn Swystun-Berne’s, Caleb Leier, Tristan Scott and Dawson Lennea. All players have competed on local teams including the Martensville Maddogs and the Martensville High School Royals.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

The Stanley Cup finals are all tied up after four games. Boston and St. Louis each won one game at home and one on the road. The Bruins came back from a 2-0 deficit in game one with four straight goals to take a 1-0 series lead with a 4-2 win.

St. Louis tied the series with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win in game two with their next two games being at home. Blues fans were wild in hosting their first Stanley Cup final game in 49 years but the Bruins gave them nothing to cheer about as Boston rolled to a demanding 7-2 win in St. Louis. Blues goaltender, Jordan Binnington, has had a few rough games in these playoffs giving up six goals to Winnipeg in round one, and five goals twice to the San Jose Sharks in the Western finals. Each time Binnington had a rough game though he bounced back with a win and since has a 12-2 record after a loss through the regular season and playoffs. He would improve that record to 13-2 with a 4-2 victory in game four and tie the series as it heads back to Boston for game five on Thursday.

Game six is guaranteed to go on Sunday in St. Louis and if needed, game seven will be on Wednesday, June 12th in Boston.

City Council was approached by Jenna Morgan, Life Coach Strategic Intervention, to develop a Hope & Healing Centre in Martensville at the June 4th Regular Council Meeting.

Statistics show that 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression, and left untreated, it is the #1 cause of suicide and third leading cause of death among teenagers.

According to Morgan, depression is responsible for 850,000 deaths and each year 20% of adolescents will experience mental health problems, most commonly anxiety and depression.

Morgan approached council stating the need for mental health facilities within Canada and has approached the federal and provincial government in this regard. Her request is that they build a 22,000 square foot residential building in Martensville’s Lake Vista area which would allow 20 – 25 people at a time to go through the program where experts would come in to assist individuals through counseling and different forms of therapy. There would be laboratory services, aerobic activities and more. “My goal is to have this type of facility in each province in Canada before I die,” stated Morgan.

She is asking that the city allow this facility to be built in Martensville, that the city donate 10 acres of land, and that one council member would be on the board of this not-forprofit organization.
