On Wednesday, May 26, Steve Cusson, owner/operator of Phobia Auto Care in Martensville and Saskatoon, along with help from his family and his ‘Phobia family’, stocked the pond in Kinsmen Park with fish. Cusson began stocking the pond several years ago in order to provide a recreational activity for local families. This year, due to fish dying off throughout the winter months, Cusson approached Martensville City Council with a suggestion for a windmill aerator to be installed, which will help add oxygen to the water when the ice is frozen.

The aerator will be installed this fall. The trout that were added will require some time to grow before they will be large enough to fish. Cusson noted that this project always requires planning for approximately one year in advance.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

There has been continued progression around the delivery of vaccines with the increase in number of vaccine clinics and eligibility for the public expanding as vaccine becomes administered and available.

The North Ridge Centre opened as an available vaccination centre hosting walk-in or appointment clinics. Please watch announcements regarding upcoming clinic dates and eligibility.

Buster Days 2021: June 4th - 6th Registration for all Buster Days events is still OPEN with spots available for some events.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions around gathering, everyone must register and register each person that will be attending events. Events are being capped at 30.

Police and EMS Warn of Increase in Drug Overdoses After 5 Deaths Within 5 Days

The Saskatoon Police Service and Medavie Health Services West are advising the public of a recent and concerning increase in drug overdoses.

Between Tuesday, May 25th and Sunday, May 30th, police responded to 10 suspected drug overdoses, including five deaths. While toxicology is used to confirm the substances, initial information at some of the scenes indicates the presence of fentanyl.

While Police do not attend to every overdose call, officers have administered Narcan in 13 instances between January and April of this year.

"Police are concerned about this recent upward trend, especially the incidents that result in the death of a member of our community. These numbers though, are not a complete picture," says Superintendent Patrick Nogier, Criminal Investigations. "In addition to Medavie's responses to medical/overdose calls, we also recognize that public awareness campaigns have been successful in equipping businesses and households with Naloxone kits; while beneficial, if used and successful, these overdoses may not be tracked."

Medavie Health Services West has noticed a similar uptick in overdose trends.

“These numbers are very alarming to us, especially having 21 patients in less than a week that required 29 doses of Narcan administered to regain consciousness,” states Troy Davies, Director of Public Affairs for Medavie Health Services West. “To put this into perspective, in May 2019 we had a total of 11 patients for the entire month that received Narcan”.

Police and Medavie wish to remind the public that any drug that is not prescribed by a doctor and dispensed by a pharmacist can result in serious injury or death.

Citizens are also reminded that anyone who is present when another person is experiencing an overdose can call 9-1-1 without fear of criminal charges arising from drug possession. See the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act for more information.

It is also critically important to know the signs of an opioid overdose. Symptoms of an opioid overdose may include: slow or no breathing; gurgling, gasping or snoring; clammy, cool skin; and blue lips or nails. If you suspect someone has overdosed on any drug, call 9-1-1. People can also access Naloxone kits, if they are concerned about experiencing, or witnessing, a drug overdose.

Civic Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic What You Should Know!

City Hall is Open; however, with some guidelines currently in place. Continue to utilize online and contactless options when possible. Please do not visit City Hall if you are feeling unwell, experiencing flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with someone who is presumptive or tested positive for COVID-19.

Residents and Customers are encouraged to carry out transactions electronically such as online banking, preauthorized payments or TIPPS. Cheques may also be dropped off in the drop slot at City Hall.

Use of Masks are Mandatory in Saskatchewan - Residents are required to wear nonmedical masks in indoor public spaces to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This is a Public Health Order and is subject to enforcement and fines.

Health officials strongly recommend wearing a non-medical mask anywhere outside the home.

High School Trio Become Martensville’s Newest Business Owners Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This weekend marks a big weekend for three Martensville High School students. Carson Heuchert (17), Alex Garchinski (16) and Wyatt Strueby are the proud owners of Cones Ice Cream, which will open on June 4th in Martensville’s Kinsmen Park.

The three business partners and long-time friends were brainstorming ideas on how to make some extra money this year and were looking for something outside the typical jobs that you see high school students working in. “We just thought we could do a bit more than what is normal for kids our age and we thought that by opening an ice cream shop, it would be a great experience, we could have some fun and also learn some entrepreneurial skills that could help us later in life,” Garchinski explained.

Planning for this journey began this past February which saw their initiative take this from just being an idea shared among friends to a reality that an entire community can benefit from. The trio created a business plan, submitted their proposal to the City of Martensville, contacted Foothills Creamery as a supplier and have recently been spending their time cleaning and setting up the Kinsmen Park Ice Cream shack. Although much of the work has been done by the three owners, Garchinski noted that there were many others that have supported them through this, and without their help this dream would not be possible.

Heuchert, Garchinski and Strueby all have fond memories of spending time as children in Kinsmen Park sampling different ice cream flavors and are looking forward to providing an opportunity for local kids to have those same memories. “It was such a good memory for us to have and now to be able to pass it on to others is such a good feeling,” said Strueby.

“Martensville is constantly growing and is starting to feel more like a city but having an ice cream shop in the middle of town just has a small-town feel to it – a place where everyone knows each other and can help bring the community together,” Heuchert added.

Cones Ice Cream will be ran entirely by the three and will be open this Friday from 3pm-9pm, Saturday June 5 from 11am-9pm and Sunday, June 6 from 11am9pm. They will have 16 different flavors, plus two sorbet flavors and will also provide lactose free options. In addition to ice cream, there will also be floats, freezies and water available, with the possibility of more options being added throughout the year.

If successful and the business proves profitable, there are plans in place to continue operating next summer. “We know that we want to do this for a couple of years, but once we are ready to move on, we have talked about the possibility of passing it down to other kids like us that are looking to learn about business as well. It would be nice to see it turn into a tradition where the local ice cream shop is run by kids – that’s not something you see in every city,” Garchinski stated.

To follow the current COVID guidelines, masks will be required when placing an order and sanitizer will be available. Regular sanitizing of the space, as well as physical distancing will also be done.

City Offers Fun Way to Enjoy Martensville’s Parks This June Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This month, the City of Martensville is providing an opportunity for local families to take part in some new activities and sports within the community, all while taking advantage of some of the beautiful park spaces within the city.

The Outdoor Family Park Program is for families within Martensville and is free for everyone, with all the necessary equipment provided by the City. The program will be offered from 6pm-7pm every Wednesday throughout the month of June and each week will feature a new activity at a different park such as pickleball, giant yard games, bouncy house, disc golf, tennis and basketball.

“This program is new to the City and hasn’t been offered in this format before. Throughout this pandemic, providing opportunities for families to get outside and enjoy their time together has been essential and this is just another way we can offer that to our community,” Jamie McCulloch, City of Martensville Program Coordinator, explained.

We recently added pickleball lines to our outdoor courts, and the game of pickleball itself is one that all ages and skill levels can play and enjoy. The basketball and tennis courts are open every day and are great ways to get the family outside. We also have an amazing Disc Golf course in Kinsmen Park that can be used all year round and introducing more people to the sport will increase the usage of the course,” McCulloch said. “The reason why the bouncy house and giant yard games were chosen is because who doesn’t love playing games and jumping in a bouncy house,” McCulloch added.

All Saskatchewan Health Authority and Provincial guidelines will be followed, which includes frequent sanitization, mask usage and contact tracing sign in sheets. All programs will also allow for physical distancing and sanitization between uses.

Investigation Leads to Assault Charges After Toddler Sustains Injuries in Martensville

On February 14, 2021, Warman RCMP received a request to investigate injuries sustained by a one-yearold child in Martensville. The request was made by one of the child’s parents.

The RCMP’s Saskatoon General Investigation Section investigated, with assistance from Warman RCMP and medical personnel. It was determined the child was seriously injured at a Martensville residence on February 12, 2021. The child was taken to hospital for treatment.

As a result of this investigation, officers arrested a 24-year-old male on May 27, 2021 in relation to this incident. The male is known to the victim. His name will not be released publicly by the RCMP as it could identify the injured toddler.

The accused is charged with aggravated assault and has since been released from custody, scheduled to appear in court on July 12, 2021.

Canada-Wide Warrant Requested For Man In Connection To Human Trafficking Investigation

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a 33-year-old man wanted on several criminal code offences relating to a 15-month long human trafficking investigation by the Saskatoon Police VICE and Human Trafficking Unit.

In July 2019, VICE investigators became aware of a man who was involved in sex trafficking. During the investigation it was learned that an underage victim had been trafficked in Saskatoon. The victim and the accused were known to each other, however investigators believe there may be other victims.

Ahmed Adam (DOB 1988-Jan-2) is charged with Trafficking Persons, Material Benefit resulting from Trafficking in Persons, Material Benefit from Sexual Services, Procuring, Material Benefit from Sexual Services provided by Person under 18, Procuring Person under 18, and Advertising Sexual Services. Impaired Driving Charges Laid at Langham Weigh Scale

A Saskatchewan Highway Patrol Officer stopped a car at Langham weigh scale that entered the scale going the wrong way on the exit ramp.

Driver blew a ‘fail’ when tested for alcohol. The driver was arrested for impaired driving. Open alcohol, untaxed tobacco and other controlled substances found.

Highway 11 Check Stop Leads to Several Charges

On May 24, Corman Park Police Service, along with members of Saskatoon Police Service were joined by volunteers from MADD at a checkstop on Highway 11 at Warman Road to kick off the "Impaired Driver Caught Here" program for the Corman Park Police Service.

Out of approximately 300 vehicles stopped, one was arrested for impaired driving with a BAC over .08, one had their licence suspended for 21 days and one driver had their license suspended for three days after testing positive for cannabis.

Open Alcohol Found After Vehicle Observed Driving on Wrong Side of Highway

On May 27,2021 Corman Park Police observed a SUV driving through a stop sign at approximately 40 km/h on Cartwright Road and Highway 219. The vehicle drove northbound on Highway 219 in the opposite lane of traffic and then drove in the shoulder. A traffic stop was conducted, and a mandatory approved screening device demand was read. After five attempts, the accused failed to provide a sample of his breath into the approved screening device and was arrested. A search of the vehicle was conducted, and open alcohol was found in the driver's golf bag. The driver was released with future court date.

Traffic Stop For Taillight Leads to Criminal Charges

On May 27 Corman Park Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Valley Road near Hodgson Road with no taillights illuminated.

The driver and passenger had outstanding criminal warrants and were arrested. Drug paraphernalia consistent with Crystal Meth use was observed and search of the vehicle was conducted where dog spray, a black handgun (airsoft or BB) and 4g of Crystal Meth were found.

Both occupants were released with a future court date for their warrants and new criminal charges.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said some things last week that were very different in his bluntness.

He spoke to those who aren’t yet vaccinated — especially those who are refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine and are encouraging others not to get it and unlike previous occasions when either he or Health Minister Paul Merriman politely suggested getting vaccinated was a matter of personal choice, the Premier didn’t mince many words.

“We’re not asking you to storm the beaches at Normandy,” Moe said. “All we’re asking you to do is go in and get a tiny needle in your arm.”

Other premiers like Ontario’s Doug Ford and Manitoba’s Brian Pallister have been more blunt. Moe has been more guarded … until now. Admittedly, it was a tad puzzling in the context of the overall message from Moe and Saskatchewan Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab. Both again said vaccinations in this province have been a huge success story. We are at or in the lead among the provinces (the territories are way ahead of the provinces in general) in the percentage of our population vaccinated.

At his most recent briefing, Moe re-emphasized Saskatchewan’s vaccine success that has seen 80-per-centor-more vaccination rates among the 60 years and old age groups and pointed to large weekly percentage increases in younger age categories that have more recently been made eligible for vaccinations.

In fact, Moe said he isn’t especially worried about vaccine hesitancy in specific age groups. His Saskatchewan Party government’s strategy of doling out vaccinations mostly through an age-based system - as opposed to seeking out younger, frontline workers for vaccinations earlier - has drawn criticism, but when it comes to getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, it is a system that has also been effective.

However; judging by Moe’s concerns, there are newfound worries out there about people’s unwillingness - or inability — to get vaccinations. It would seem rather obvious that the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) drive-thru’s are better suited for people with access to vehicles and who have the ability to take time off work to get to those clinics. The success of those drive-thru clinics in Regina and Saskatoon has been somewhat driven by people driving in for hundreds of miles from throughout rural Saskatchewan and willingly waiting in line.

This was a very good thing and has clearly contributed to Saskatchewan’s high vaccination rate.

It also somewhat dispels an “urban myth” that vaccine hesitancy is just a rural problem driven by independent, anti-government rural types. (As one rural resident put it to me: “Those that think that way have never lived in a smaller community where everyone knows everyone else and aren’t shy about saying something.”)

That said, Moe’s remarks last week did also acknowledge newer Canadians and others like some in the First Nations communities (although there have been massively successful vaccination campaigns run by reserves as well) need special attention.

Moe mostly seemed to be addressing those isolated, individual resisters. Cumulatively, they might be adding up to a big problem for all of us in the COVID-19 fight. “You should know and you should be fully aware of the risks,” Moe said. “Covid is not gone. You will continue to be at risk.”

Again, this seems to contrast with the government’s overall message. But, sometimes in government, there are much bigger problems than a little messaging inconsistency. Moe clearly sees resisters as the big problem and appealed to them directly to help end the restrictions he also hates. “I hate it,” the Premier said, of those imposing his restrictions. “I look forward to the day it all ends. But that day can only come when enough of us choose to be vaccinated.”

And right now, Moe’s foremost concern is those who won’t be vaccinated.

FSIN And Province Call For Federal Action To Research Undocumented Deaths And Burials In Residential Schools In Saskatchewan

Following the discovery of the remains of 215 children buried on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on the Tk'emlups te Secwépemc First Nation in British Columbia, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) and the Government of Saskatchewan are issuing a joint call for the Government of Canada to immediately commence research on undocumented deaths and burials in residential schools in Saskatchewan, including radar ground search at residential school sites.

The FSIN has indicated that initial sites for radar ground search should include Muskowekwan Indian Residential School (IRS), Onion Lake St. Anthony's IRS, Beauval IRS, Guy Hill IRS, Lebret IRS and Sturgeon Landing IRS, along with additional sites in consultation with First Nations in Saskatchewan.

"Our First Nations communities and families need closure to begin healing from the traumas forced upon them at these residential schools," FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said. "There are thousands of families across this country and in our Treaty territories that have been waiting for their children to come home. These children deserve the respect and dignity of proper burials and we must follow protocol and work with our Elders to ensure that their souls are at peace. We respectfully ask all First Nations across Canada to join us on this very important healing journey.

We are calling on the Liberal Government, the NDP and Conservative parties to support us in this endeavour."

"Saskatchewan is supporting the call from the FSIN and FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron for the federal government to take immediate action following the tragic discovery of the remains of 215 children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School," Premier Scott Moe said. "With an estimated 20 federal residential schools operated in Saskatchewan, meaningful reconciliation in our province must include research into the estimated hundreds of children that did not return home after attending these institutions, including radar ground search. Saskatchewan is prepared to support this work through the Ministry of First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs in collaboration with the FSIN and First Nations in Saskatchewan."

In commemoration of the 215 children whose remains were discovered on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, flags at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building will be flown at half-mast until further notice.

The residential school system operated in Canada for more than a century.

The province has recently acted to protect cemeteries at residential school sites in Saskatchewan. In 2019, the Battelford Industrial School Cemetery, the resting place for at least 74 children who died while attending the institution, was marked as a Provincial Heritage Property.

Similarly, the Regina Indian Industrial Joint Use School Lake Vista School Cemetery, Holy Mary Catholic Elementary School ElementarySchool the resting place of approximately 36 children, was designated a Provincial Heritage Property in 2017.

Buster Days 2021 June 4th, 5th & 6th Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

The long-anticipated City of Martensville annual Buster Days begins this Friday, June 4, and will run throughout the weekend. Due to COVID, the Buster Days Committee had to rethink their plans when it came to the size of the event, and what activities could be included in order to comply with the current guidelines that are in place. Much time and effort went into planning and coming up with fun, entertaining events for the whole family to take part in.

Jamie McCulloch, City of Martensville Recreation Program Coordinator, stated that to adhere to public gathering numbers and safety measures, they decided early on to eliminate activities that could draw in a large crowd, and anything that discouraged drop in activities. This meant they had to eliminate the parade, shows in the park, petting zoo, and inflatables this year.

“The activities that we chose allowed us to set a limit on the number of people who could attend at once, events that have been popular in previous Buster Days, and activities that are new to Buster Days,” said McCulloch.

The Committee has come up with a lot of great activities for the weekend with main events such as Family Swim Day, drive-in movies, online cooking classes, virtual bingo, and fireworks to name a few.

The weekend kicks off with several free events starting with a Geocache Flower Scramble. Flowers will be hidden along the pond at Kinsmen Park. Find the clues that are hidden in the flowers to unscramble and solve the secret message. Once the secret message is solved you can enter to win some fun prizes. The first clue will be on the Buster Days Facebook page. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 7.

This event will be available all weekend long!

Another free event that will be available all weekend is the animal rock hunt.

Watch for animals on the loose at Kinsmen Park. Find all 15 animals that are painted on rocks within Kinsmen Park.

The Walking Storybook at Kinsmen Park is another free activity where kids can learn all about dinosaurs. They will be featuring the comic book story Prehistoria: Age of Dinosaurs. This book will take you through the life of Edmonsauruses, Sentinels, and a dangerous predator, the Albertosaurus. The author is Martensville's very own Brayden Martens who will be joining the Buster Days festivities at Kinsmen Park from 1-4pm on Saturday June 5th. He will be located at the end of the Walking Storybook to talk about his comics, and there will be copies available for purchase. He will also have issue #4 of Prehistoria: Age of Dinosaurs available with all proceeds going towards the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Friday evening will feature a night at the movies in the Kinsmen Park Diamonds Parking lot. The first feature film is Jumanji: Next Level and it will begin at 9:00pm. The second film is Jurassic World which will begin at 11:30pm. Gates open at 8:30pm for the first show and 11:00pm for the second show. When registering you only need one ticket per vehicle, and you can bring in as many people as there are seatbelts in your car. The cost to attend a single movie is $25 or $40 for the double feature.

Masks will be mandatory when outside your vehicle.

Saturday’s events kick off with three fitness classes happening at different parks from 9:30-10:30 am; Kinsmen Park, Lions Park, and Mini Mountain. There will be three instructors and each person will provide a fun and unique class for all fitness levels!

Family swim day begins at 11am at the Aquatic Centre. There will be four 1.5 hour time slots available for you and your family to come swimming at the pool.

The cost is $5 per person to attend and you must be registered. If a name is not on the attendance list, they will not be able to enter.

There will be food trucks available Saturday from 1-6 pm. Smoke's Poutinerie and Hawaiian Shaved Ice will be located next to the skate park.

Youth Swim Night begins at 7pm at the Aquatic Centre and is designated for the older youth 13 – 18 years of age in the community to come and enjoy the pool with their friends. for those who are 13-18 years old. There will be a DJ, lights, and more for them to enjoy. You must register for this event and the cost is $5 per person.

On Sunday there will be bingo at the MAP from 1-2 and 2:30-3:30, followed by virtual cooking classes and a virtual bingo at 7 pm.

When you register for the virtual cooking class or classes, you will get a recipe with the ingredient list so you can follow the step-by-step process to cook along with your instructor as it is streamed on the Buster Days Facebook Page. The first cooking class will feature Glenda showing how to make cold rolls from the comfort of your home.

The second part of the virtual cooking class will feature Chef Al who will be demonstrating how to make a pasta dish with shrimp, feta, and spinach.

There will be a fireworks display to celebrate the end of Buster Days 2021 at Kinsmen Park beginning at 9:30pm. All Government of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Health Authority's Guidelines and recommendations for this event will be followed.

McCulloch said that most events are by registration and can be done through the city’s website; https://martensville.maxgalaxycanada.net/Home.aspx.

Registration is still open and there are still spots available, but activities like swimming and bingo are filling up quickly!

“Though this year's Buster Days celebration is a little smaller than previous years, it will still be a fun weekend for families to enjoy together. There is something for everyone and we hope the people in our community enjoy it and take full advantage!” said McCulloch.
