Water Meter Conversion Program Update, First Stage Complete - Book Today to Avoid Surcharges

The City of Martensville initiated a program where existing water meters will be replaced with new automated water meters. This is a City-wide program to convert all existing meters* Neptune Technology Group concluded their portion of meter converions, booking for a new meter is now done through City Hall

The Regular Council Meetings are located at Martensville City Hall Council Chambers in Martensville City Hall at 37 Centennial Dr. S. All meetings commence at 5 PM.

Meters that were not converted through the initial phase will be subject to a $50/month surcharge for manual meter reads. Implementation of these surcharges will commence and be announced for future billing periods.

Those wishing to address or do a presentation to Council must be placed on the agenda. To be placed on the agenda please contact the City Clerk’s office at City Hall or visit the website for details.

Lifting of the Public Health Order- What you Should Know

Organics pick-ups resumed on May 6th for the North-side of Martensville and May 13th for the South-side. This service is scheduled on Fridays and alternates between north and south until the end of October. Organics is a subscription based program, to subscribe please contact City Hall

Street Sweeping Season

Let’s Keep our Lanes Clean, Fall Back Lane Clean-up

Placing garbage, materials or waste in our lanes is unsightly, can attract pests, be unsafe and impede maintenance or access to properties.

Property owners along a boulevard or lane are responsible for ensuring these areas are cleaned up. Key points under the Nuisance Abatement Bylaw include: - The owner or occupier of property along a boulevard or lane shall ensure that the portion of the boulevard or lane next to the property, up to the centre line of the lane, is kept free and clear, at all times of weeds, uncontrolled growth of grass, plants and tree/shrub overgrowth.

- Dumping or placing any garden, vegetation, waste materials or tree branches along the boulevard or lane is against the municipal bylaw and subject to enforcement - Use of lanes or boulevards for the dumping of household furniture, building materials or tires is not permitted.

Street Sweeping will be underway now moving into neighbourhoods but still tending to arterial and collector streets as required.

Questions about Boulevard or Lane Maintenance can be referred to City Hall or consult the Nuisance Abatement Bylaw at Martensville.ca

Watch for signs and posts in your neighbourhood. We ask that vehicles be removed from the streets on your ‘sweep’ day, however, tickets will not be issued, nor vehicles towed away.

Police Seek Help in Identifyng Suspect

Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers is helping the Martensville RCMP in identifying an individual that is believed to be involved in fraud over $5000, Identity Theft and Identity Fraud.

If you can identify this man, contact Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers via Facebook or by calling 1-800-222-8477 to leave an anonymous tip. If your tip leads to an arrest or charge, you may be eligible for a reward of up to $2000.

Since inflation rates have gone up, the number of families the Martensville Free Pantry (MFP) has helped has doubled since March, said MFP Coordinator Deseri Adrian.

The Martensville & District Lions Club decided that they wanted to do something to help this amazing cause that helps so many families within the community. In addition to this donation, the Lions Club plans to partner with the MFP later this summer to run a meat raffle to help make additional funds.

Paws Republic Appreciates Community Support Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Paws Republic Centre for Pets in Martensville not only provides daycare, boarding, grooming and training options for our furry friends, but they help return lost pets to their families and find those without homes a new loving family to call their own.

With fostering pets comes added expenses and thanks to a donation from St. Michael Community School of dog food, it helps to lighten the load.

The donation was collected through a unique event. Brittany Brunn, the Indigenous Coordinator for St. Michael Community School explained how they were able to take the opportunity to give back.

“Our school is the Metis School of Excellence in Saskatoon. Every year we host what is called the Metis Voyageur Games. It’s a huge event for Metis people in Saskatchewan. So we brought it to our school and we have seven events which are axe throwing, including plastic axe throwing kit, log tossing, rope winding, relay races, animal calls, jigging and dog food racing,” Brunn said.

The dog food racing consisted of large and small bags of dog food and participants raced with them.

Younger kids carried smaller bags and the older kids had larger bags.

City of Martensville Begins Summer Programming This July Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

If you are looking for something for your kids to do when school is out, The City of Martensville has you covered.

Their School’s Out for Summer Program is for kids aged 6 – 11 and will begin the first week of July. Activities will be offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 – 4pm. The first session runs July 5 – 21 with each week featuring different activities.

Week one will highlight baseball, basketball, and football (July 5-7).

Week two features lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball (July 12-14), and the last week will have hockey, golf, and tennis for activities (July 19-21).

There will be a small break after the 21st with the next session beginning August 9 – 25. Week four activities are as

follows; Music Makers, Awesome Astronomy, and Fun to be Fit (August 9-11), week five is Game on!, Craft & Create, and Splashtopia (Aug 1618), and finally week six will feature Summer Safari, Camp Olympics, and Fun with Nature (Aug 23 – 25).

You can sign up a few days a week, a couple weeks, or the whole summer. All activities will be either at the Map, Heritage Centre and Outdoors with various instructors provided. The cost is $15/day and you can register online at www.martensville.ca. Look for the ‘Program Registrations’ button near the bottom of the page.

Martensville Student Among 100 Students From Across the Province to Receive Sask Youth Apprenticeship Scholarship Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

On Friday, June 24th, a total of 100 high school graduates that plan to pursue a career in the skilled trades, from 66 communities throughout Saskatchewan received Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarships from the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC).

One Martensville graduate, Andie Stuart, was fortunate enough to receive one of these scholarships as they move forward pursuing an apprenticeship as a parts technician.

"Apprentices and skilled tradespeople perform critical work that supports our province's strong economy," Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, congratulations to the 2021-22 scholarship recipients."

This scholarship program was initially launched in 2009, and was created as a way to reward students that are actively pursuing skilled trade careers. Recipients of the $1000 SYA scholarships can redeem them within two years of graduating high school by completing Level 1 apprenticeship technical training, or a pre-employment course in a trade designated with the province. More than 300 schools and nearly 3,700 students are currently registered in the SYA program.

Educators that oversee their respective school’s SYA program are invited to nominate at least one student annually for the scholarship, and then recipients are selected by a committee of SATCC staff members.

SYA participants complete a total of 12 activities, which include things such as; interviewing a journeyperson; researching and writing a report on a designated trade; attending a career fair; and completing the Young Worker Readiness certificate - that raise their awareness of apprenticeship and skilled trade careers.

Any SYA graduate that registers as an apprentice in the province within five years of program completion, will receive significant benefits such as the waiver of their apprenticeship registration fee and Level 1 technical training tuition, as well as 300 trade time hours.

"The SYA Industry Scholarships motivate recipients to go after a career in the skilled trades," SATCC Board Chair Drew Tiefenbach said. "Scholarship recipients realize that careers in the skilled trades are rewarding; skilled tradespeople learn by doing and perform tangible work that contributes to our province's economic growth.

Congratulations to this year's recipients."

Sixty industry sponsors have invested more than $750,000 into the scholarship fund. The Government of Saskatchewan has also invested through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunities Scholarship, bringing total contributions to $1.2 million.

MLA Terry Jenson’s Report from the Legislature Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day

Changing Demographics Bad for NDP

During her run for the NDP leadership, Carla Beck described the biggest division in Saskatchewan as not one between right and left but one between rural and urban. If this is somehow a revelation to the NDP, it surely isn’t to most in rural Saskatchewan living rural/urban divide each day and what the NDP don’t get is how related this divide is to changing politics.

While the Saskatchewan Party has won every rural seat for consecutive elections now, it has also won a majority of urban seats. That includes places like north Regina that used to be NDP bedrock but now sees Trent Wotherspoon as the party’s only MLA north of Dewdney Avenue. There are reasons why.

About 170 unionized workers have already been laid off at Evraz Steel with as many as 300 layoffs expected — surely, one of the biggest private employers in Regina. The problems in the industry are complex, but the lack of pipelines being built is part of it.

This is something new Saskatchewan Energy Minister Jim Reiter has seized upon, saying we need either a change in attitude or a change in the federal government.

Reiter was equally quick to note that NDP leadership is anti-pipeline and has opposed further oil developments.

It's politics but a lot of those unionized laid-off steelworkers — who might have voted NDP at one time — likely agree. This might now be what Beck — the favourite to win her party’s leadership as of this writing of this column — and the NDP want to hear. But the reality is that increased oil and mining wealth and ever-larger farms has made this province considerably more conservative in the past two decades.

Not only is the NDP no longer the province’s natural governing party but also there are questions whether if the NDP is relevant anymore. The answer to that may be better determined by how it emerges out of the weekend’s leadership contest, but the problem for New Democrats is that they can’t rap their heads around not only how politics has changed but also how far they have drifted from their pragmatic roots.

Reaction to another recent federal government development calls that into question. Saskatchewan cattle and pork producers are now facing warning labels on ground beef and pork packaging because of saturated fats.

In fairness, this is from Health Canada so it certainly is not directly political. It can also be further argued that there is nothing inherently wrong with telling people what may not be good for them in the packaging … although why raw ground beef or pork is of equal priority to warning labels on our McDonald’s bag or ice cream cone is rather interesting.

Even more interesting is the reaction from city folks — some with NDP ties — that see legitimate concern over this issue as just (as one old NDP warhorse put in to me in letter) more about “belly-aching” from farmers.

City people in Saskatchewan should know full well that it’s been an incredibly tough winter and spring for cattle producers. They should further understand that what they deem to be just a “health issue” is something else, but it seems some city people — especially those with particular points of view — understand and/or care less and less about rural issues.

Even in the past 15 years since the province rallied behind the beef industry because a few cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crippled the industry, things have changed.

With a shrinking rural population and immigration, most of us aren’t just “one foot off the farm” as we once claimed and once more-pragmatic NDP has changed as well, seemingly moving further left.

The NDP may be right about the urban-rural split, but they seem incapable of figuring out how it is tied to their own politics.

The summer solstice brought a very special celebration to Saskatchewan as we honoured National Indigenous Peoples Day. Events were held in many of our communities and parks to honour the heritage, diverse cultures, voices, and knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.

At a sombre event at Government House in Regina, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan dedicated a new memorial to the people and families impacted by residential schools. Elders and survivors were involved in every step of the process leading up to the official unveiling of the Saskatchewan Residential School Memorial on June 21st.

Composed of all-natural elements the memorial acknowledges the earth and symbolizes the circle of life. The large central stone holds a map depicting the locations of former residential schools. It also incorporates a ceremonial smudge stone at the base.

With Canada Day celebrations upon us, we’d encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on what it means to be Canadian. A free nation that cares about the world around us. A democratic country that upholds the value of diversity and multiculturalism.

Enjoying Our Provincial Parks

Our Provincial Parks will be busy now that warmer weather has arrived. Last year our parks set a new record for visitation. Well over one million visits were recorded to Saskatchewan Provincial Parks in 2021, breaking the record of visits set in 2020. More than 400,000 camping nights were recorded in 2021, breaking a provincial record set in 2016.

As you explore our parks this year, new experiences and businesses will likely catch your eye. Our government has partnered with local businesses to offer new experiences and services to park visitors. This supports local entrepreneurs while expanding our park services and enhancing the guest experience. Nature walks, paragliding, sailing, a petting zoo and more; it’s worth the time to check out what’s new in our parks this summer.

Congratulations to Grads of 2022

And congratulations to the graduating class of 2022. Your efforts over the last couple of years have been impressive, pivoting to adjust to the pandemic while still focused on your education. Our government is keen to see our graduates stay here in Saskatchewan, helping build our province for the future. The Graduate Retention Program, the most aggressive youth retention program in Canada, continues to provide up to $20,000 in tax credits to post-secondary graduates who remain in Saskatchewan after graduation to start their careers. Canada Day weekend is always a busy one in Martensville, and this year is no different. For a unique experience, residents can head over to the Martensville Speedway where the Saskatoon Kart Racing Club (SKRC) will be hosting the 2022 Rotax Canada Final Championship. This event is a two-round series that is based in Western Canada and will bring upwards of 80 drivers from across Canada and the USA to compete for a chance to win an opportunity to represent Team Canada in the Rotax Grand Finals World Championship, which will be taking place in Portugal.

The Saskatoon Kart Racing Club has had a home in Martensville for the past twenty years on land that is leased from the City of Martensville. During that time, there has been extensive upgrades and improvements made at the track. Just in the past seven years alone, there have been 60 trees planted, a perimeter rail fence installed, racecar storage units installed, a resurfacing of the track and more, with more upgrades planned for the future.

This year, the SKRC has seen large membership numbers with over 90 members at the moment; however, they are always looking for more people to join. People of all ages can participate in kart racing and according to SKRC Past President and current Board Member Jason McCumber, the best way to get involved is to get educated about the sport.

The introductory age for racers is 7 year olds that will be turning 8 the year they want to join, and they have members that are over 60-years-old.

“We get inquiries from all age groups and we encourage people to reach out and ask questions. Our sport is definitely lumped into go-kart racing, but this is not your typical household idea of that. It is that times ten. It is an outdoors sport on a racetrack that is almost a kilometer long with elevation changes and varying speeds. It is the closest a person can get to Formula one Racing at a much more affordable budget, in a family-friendly environment, and is accessible to everyone,” McCumber said.

Speeds for kart racing vary between 60km/hr for introductory levels to approximately 112km/hr for more advanced classes. “There is quite a bit of room for growth and development in this sport which is nice,” McCumber added.

Throughout the season, there are 12 Club races held, along with an annual Sask Series event where the SKRC competes against their sister-club in Regina in a twopart event held in both communities. Races take members to various cities to compete such as Edmonton, Calgary, Chiliwack and even Ontario.

The event this weekend is one that the SKRC has been looking forward to and the Board is excited to see everyone come out. Practice will take place Friday, with the main event happening throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Everyone is invited to attend free of charge and there will be a concession available on-site.

“We don’t charge admission for any of our events.

We are just happy to have people come out and be more exposed to the sport. Come and talk to some of our members and see if this is something you might be interested in getting involved in. It is going to be a great weekend of racing.”

MCRP’s Annual 3-On-3 Tournament 85% Sold Out Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) has become a well-known name within the community through their fundraising efforts to raise funds for a new multi-purpose sports facility in the City of Martensville. Through their fundraising, they have organized numerous events that are held annually, with one of their most popular events coming back to Martensville this August.

The 3-on-3 Hockey Tournament is always a packed house, and judging by things, this year will be no different. Currently, the tournament is 85% sold-out, with limited spots available for both players and goalies in each age division.
