Big Changes Coming for Water Meters

The City of Martensville is initiating a program where existing water meters will be replaced with new automated water meters. Neptune Technology Group will be installing the meters by area and will be contacting homeowners to make appointments for the change-out.

Organics Service is Underway!

Organics pick-ups resumed on May 6th for the North-side of Martensville and May 13th for 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM the South-side. This service is scheduled on Fridays and alternates between north and south (Excluding Statutory Holidays) until the end of October. Organics is a subscription based program, to subscribe please contact City Hall Reminder!- Don’t miss your Pick-up Day! Organics, Garbage or Recycling must be curbside on your pick-up day by 7AM to ensure it is taken. Pick-up times can be fairly regular but are not set and are subject to variation or changes.

Councilor Jamie Martens Seeks Third-Term With Federation of Canadian Municipalities Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville City Councilor Jamie Martens is currently seeking her third term with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), with the election taking place on June 5th in Regina following the annual FCM Conference. FCM has been a voice for municipal government since 1901 and includes over 2,000 municipalities from across the country.

Since 2012, Martens has been a member of City Council in Martensville, currently serving her third term and through her role on Council, Martens was able to attend an FCM conference, which immediately piqued her interest in seeking a role within the organization in 2020. Each term lasts one year, and Saskatchewan has five available board member positions. Two of these positions are held by Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) and Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM).

Another position is held strictly from the three major Saskatchewan cities; Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert. The two remaining spots are voted upon.

Throughout her past two terms, Martens noted that being a part of the advocacy days in Ottawa was one of the biggest personal highlights. “This took place November 2021 with the board members attending meetings with MP’s as parliament was sitting and having the opportunity to watch as officials walking into the throne speech, as well as meeting multiple individuals with the same determination to better their communities with knowledge gained from each other,” Martens said.

Currently, Martens has a role as Vice Chair of the Rural Caucus, in addition to seven other committees within FCM. “I also hold a position as a governance representative for Canadian Woman in Local Leadership Project, as well as a gender based violence group which only consists of a few municipal leaders in Canada and other organization representatives. In this group, we hold educational sessions and workshops on multiple topics such as online harassment, bringing forward awareness in many areas of politics that need to be addressed,” explained Martens. “The rural caucus, as well as the other municipal committees, are all so important for Canadian municipalities.”

In order to run for a position on the FCM Board, individuals are required to play a role within their municipal government and receive endorsement from Council.

At the May 3, 2022 Council meeting, a motion was passed to endorse Martens’ decision to stand for election on FCM’s Board of Directors.

“Our Mayor has been a great support as well as other Council members are very encouraging. I was happy to hear they unanimously agreed to having me run for the third term. I thank my Mayor and Council for their support, as well as the community. I am truly blessed to be involved in such important areas of politics. The best is to educate others about our great City.”

E-Bikes Becoming a Popular Option Among Rising Gas Prices Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Bernie Funk has been selfemployed for the past ten years, and throughout that time, he has had numerous experiences planning a variety of events, such as the Saskatchewan Pet Expo, selling marriage licenses and other opportunities along the way. Last year, however, Funk found a passion that he wasn’t aware he had and now he is looking to share his knowledge with other residents in the province.

A year ago this month, Funk became an authorized Daymak Distributor for Saskatchewan. Daymak, based out of Toronto since 2010, is the largest E-Bike distributor in Canada and offers a range of options from bikes, scooters, kids toys, mobility scooters, ATV’s and more.

Since he began this journey, Funk has sold 15 units to date, but hopes to help others find joy in the world of E-Bikes, especially with the rising cost of gas.

This passion began after Funk purchased his own E-Bike from the previous dealer in Saskatoon and immediately loved the experience. “He closed his shop, so I decided to open my own because I think this is something people could really benefit from.

These bikes are all electric, so there is absolutely no license required to ride them,” Funk explained.

Legally, the E-Bikes can travel up to 32 km/hr; however, can get to higher speeds. The E-Bikes have pedals, so can be driven in bike lanes and on bike paths like a normal bike can and can be used for errands, as there is cargo space available. For those interested in learning more about E-Bikes, Funk does allow test drives and explained that there is something for everyone so encourages people to come take a look at the products.

Cost for DayMak products varies, depending on what you are looking for, with plain electric bicycles starting around $1800, and a larger item such as the mobility scooter can range from $3400-$7000.

“This is a new concept to Saskatchewan and hasn’t been around very long, so I am excited to share it with people. Daymak has been in other provinces for a few years now, but people hear haven’t really heard of these things. They are so amazing and every time someone buys a bike, it makes me so happy that the word is getting out there more. It really is the way to go and can suit everyone,” Funk said.

Spring Has Sprung in Martensville Theatre in the Park Performance Teaches Importance of Supporting One Another Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Sum Theatre returned to Martensville with their Theatre in the Park performance which took place in Lions Park on Sunday, May 29th at 7pm. This event was free to attend for all and provided not only an important message, but also eye-catching set designs, colourful costumes and songs that you couldn’t help but continue singing after leaving the show.

Each year, the theme for Theatre in the Park focuses on important issues facing the world, and this year was no different, with the theme, wâhkôhtowin, focusing on the kinship between all things.

This was the third year that Theatre in the Park came to Martensville, and this is made possible thanks to the sponsorship of local businesses JAGplus and Bravo Dance Co., who both wanted to bring arts and culture to the residents of Martensville.

Those that attended were reminded to keep physical distancing in place, but were encouraged to get involved and sing and dance along with the performance.

Saskatchewan-Made Liquor Options Available at Local Farmer’s Market Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Farmer’s Market runs each Wednesday from 4pm-8pm in the parking lot of the Martensville Corner Store and offers a wide variety of locally crafted products each week, including an assortment of liquor options from Smooth 42 Craft Distillery.

Smooth 42 Craft Distillery opened in March of 2018 and operates out of a former hockey rink in the Village of Brownlee.

In previous years, this vendor has attended a couple of the Martensville Farmer’s Markets; however, this year, they are looking forward to being a regular market vendor and sharing their products with local residents.

“Martensville is a great community with a well-attended and very welcoming Farmer’s Market. The new hours is a huge benefit and is definitely a factor in our decision to attend the market on a regular basis,” owner/operator Laura Dombowsky said.

Since opening, they have grown their product line to include numerous Saskatchewan liquor options, such as; Cre8 Eco Vodka, Cre8 Vodka Press, Cre8 Ultra Vodka, Apple Pie Moonshine, Sour Cherry Moonshine, Watermelon Moonshine, Caesar Ready Vodka, Green Coconut Rum Flavoured Liqueur, Not Rum Flavoured Liqueur, Saskatchatoon Schnapps and Pink Lemonade Flavoured Vodka.

“Farmer’s Markets are beneficial in bringing a sense of community to a city. Anyone can attend the markets and find something of interest! The Farmer’s Markets are a great way for us to have some face time with our regular customers and introduce our products to new clientele and educate them on all of our different spirits,” Dombowsky added.

Spring Has Sprung in Martensville Annual Dog Walk Fundraiser Draws Large Crowd Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The 8th annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides took place in Martensville on Sunday, May 29th. This event, organized by the Martensville & District Lions Club, helps to raise money to provide service dogs for families in need. Currently, there are two local families that the Lions Club is working towards providing dogs for; one Hearing Impaired Assistance Dog for a family where both parents are hearing impaired and another for a high school student that requires the assistance of a Special Service Dog. Training of Service Dogs was delayed throughout the pandemic; however, steps are being taken to ensure that those in need will receive dogs as quickly as they can.

The dog walk took place at 2pm and began in Lions Park. Those participating then walked to Kinsmen Park and met at Cones Ice Cream where dogs were treated to pup cups, and then returned to Lions Park for a BBQ at 3pm.

Project Chairperson Doug Ward of the Lions Club was grateful the weather cooperated and stated that the fundraiser brought in over $13,000 so far.

“Thank you to all that came out and participated in this year’s live walk,” Ward said.

Watch for West Nile Virus this Summer

Sask. Also a Victim of Bad Oppositions There is a connection between bad opposition and bad government, although it’s seldom a simple one. What is generally true is bad opposition can lead to bad government that get away with stuff … although it’s here where things immediately get complicated.

What may be perceived by some to be bad government in the day - say big spending and debt needed for infrastructure and to kickstart an economy or tight fiscal management to balance the book - is as easily criticized by oppositions as good policies; however, what may seem like bad policies in the day are what needed to be done and could only be done by a large government with a strong enough mandate to implement them.

During the early1980s in Saskatchewan, there was plenty of added debt often caused by hare-brained investment schemes. Conversely, there was massive austerity measures in early 1990s, presumably to counterbalance the big spending decisions of the 1980s. Like the decisions of the 1980s, it was argued at the time that tough choices were needed to get the province back on track, but as history has often demonstrated, not only the decisions to close a hospital or investment in a supposed job-creating private sector project proved to be the right one.

So the question becomes, why didn’t such projects get more scrutiny at the time? Why weren’t we aware government was making poor spending choices?

Well, the general answer is that we had small, ineffective oppositions that didn’t always provide enough scrutiny … although it quickly gets a bit more complicated than that. It’s also sometimes an issue of an opposition’s focus.

Prior to departing the legislature, NDP leader Meili was asked what advice he had for his successor. Essentially, he warned the next leader not to become their own attack dog that’s always criticizing and not offering a positive alternatives.

This was a problem for Meili, but, again, it was a bit more complicated than that. Meili’s focus was often problematic health delivery equality and socio-economic issues problems that obviously contribute to crime, drug abuse and suicide.

Unfortunately, what he didn’t often recognize is other problems in Saskatchewan. While focussing on the big, most dire concerns plaguing a minority in this province, it was often lost on Meili and his NDP that issues like good paying jobs, rural health care delivery and taxes have remained at the forefront.

Of course, the public recognizes that in a place like Saskatchewan, government can’t always provide everyone with the services and infrastructure and still deliver balanced budgets. In fact, the public here tends to be rather forgiving ... unless government demonstrates why it doesn’t deserve such forgiveness.

This is where we run into problems with oppositions that are small and ineffective. Governments - especially, big governments — get very good at hiding not only the thing that would cause the average voter to question its decisions. If they are a big government, they tend to have to manpower any resources at their disposal to convince us otherwise.

While it did seem Meili was always on the attack, whether his NDP Opposition was always effectively attacking the Sask. Party government for wasting resources was another matter.

It’s rather easy to point out there are too many sick people, too many poor people and too much crime. It’s tougher to show why government is to blame.

That requires a lot of detailed, hard work exploring from every aspect of government spending? Was a foreign trip necessary? What did it cost and how was money spent?

The problem, however, is smaller when oppositions have less dollars and resources available to research and then focus on such details. For years, Saskatchewan has suffered from big government, but it’s also suffered from small, ineffective oppositions.

It's been 20 years since West Nile virus was first detected in Saskatchewan and while the risk has decreased in the last few years, all residents are asked to continue to use best practices to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

"It's a fact of life that prairie summers include mosquitoes but most of those that find us at our campsites, in our yards and in our parks are merely a nuisance," Health Minister Paul Merriman said. "Simple prevention can save you from more than just itchy ankles. Keep West Nile virus in mind when heading outdoors."

"West Nile virus is now considered endemic in Saskatchewan," Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer for Saskatchewan Dr. Julie Kryzanowski said. "While the number of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes detected in Saskatchewan has declined in recent years, taking precautions against mosquito bites is always a good idea."

West Nile virus was confirmed in a dead magpie in Regina in the summer of 2002 with the first human case confirmed in the province the following year. Since 2007, the number of West Nile cases in Saskatchewan has substantially declined. In 2021, there was only one human neuroinvasive disease case and no one has died of West Nile virus in Saskatchewan since 2018.

This summer, the Ministry of Health will transition to a more targeted approach to mosquito surveillance.

Provincial mosquito monitoring will continue in three communities (Saskatoon, Regina and Estevan) and will be used in combination with environmental conditions to approximate the threat of West Nile virus provincially.

Weekly West Nile virus reports will continue to be posted publicly each week beginning in June on the Government of Saskatchewan website at https://www.saskatchewan.ca/residents/health/diseases-and-conditions/ west-nile-virus.

How to Reduce Exposure to Mosquito Bites

• Use appropriate insect repellent when outdoors; • Wear light-coloured, loose fitting, long-sleeved tops and long pants when outdoors; • Reduce the amount of time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when Culex tarsalis mosquitoes are most active; • Maintain door and window screens so they fit tightly and are free of holes; and • Reduce mosquito habitat (standing water) around your home and yard.

Most people who become infected with West Nile virus experience no or mild symptoms. A small number of people may develop a more serious condition known as West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease. If you have been bitten by a mosquito and experience fever, confusion, neck stiffness or an unusually severe headache, seek medical attention.

by Martensville Fire Chief Kurtis Dyck.

Paramedics Week is May 22-28 This year, Paramedic Services Week runs from May 22-28. For the Martensville Fire Department, medical calls account for the majority of their calls for service, which is why every member of MFD is trained to at least the Medical First Responder Level.

The local fire department also has several members trained to the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) level.

On May 19, the 2022 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft was held. Scouts from WHL clubs were sent to watch first-year bantams (players born in 2007) from the start of the minor hockey season and several local players from the Martensville U15AA Marauders were selected.

The WHL holds a draft specifically to allow teams to add bantam players in an orderly manner to their protected lists. This is the first opportunity for teams to select players, although all players still have a chance to become eligible to be listed by teams after the draft is completed. Many are added as spots become available, when a player’s talents improve or are more noticeable at a later day, or at a higher level of hockey.

Martensville U15 AA Marauders had 4 players selected in the draft: Kazden Mathies (Round 2, 38th Overall) – Selected to the Seattle Thunderbirds Carsen Adair (Round 3, 55th Overall) – Selected to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Simon Garchinski (Round 6, 128th Overall) – Selected to the Portland Winterhawks Teigan Semchyshen (Round 7, 146th Overall) – Selected to the Kamloops Blazers In addition to being selected in the WHL Draft, these same players were signed to join the U18 AAA teams for the upcoming 2022-2023 season, including one additional player, Kaden Shumay who was signed to the Yorkton Maulers.

Kazden Mathies signed on with the Warman Wildcats as well as Carsen Adair, Simon Garchinksi joins the Prince Albert Mintos, and Teigan Semchyshen, the Estevan Bears.

Martensville Football Players Set to Play For U16 North Sask Team

Congratulations to the eleven Martensville players, both current and former Maddogs and Royals players that made the U16 North Sask Team; Kyren Houmphanh, Aidan Low, Emilio Rodriguez, Cam Kliewer, Nick Cook, Ethan Douglas, Race Marcinkiw, Treagen GreenEdmonds, Wyatt LaRoche, Chase Ogden and Will Zinterer.

“To the others that tried out and didn’t make it this year, keep working hard and maybe next year will be your shot,” the Maddogs organization stated via social media.
