Codie Prevost Performs in Warman in Support of Fundraiser Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger
If you are looking for an evening out to hear an amazing acoustic performance this weekend, then The Cork and Kettle in Warman is the place to be on Saturday, June 19. Martensville and District Kinsmen Club member Rob Spence approached local artist Codie Prevost, to plan a way to get the community together, raise funds for community initiatives, and bring back live events. According to Prevost, he thought the idea was “awesome and exciting.” “Kinsmen in my eyes is one of the most important fundraising organizations in our province. They help so many people in so many communities all across Saskatchewan. I've had the privilege of performing on Telemiracle and at numerous Kinsmen events province wide and I've always been proud to be a part of them,” said Prevost. Prevost is a four-time Canadian Country Music Association nominee and sixtime Saskatchewan Country Music Association ‘Fans Choice Entertainer of the year’ award winner. He is no stranger to the music world sharing the stage with some of country’s top music performers such as Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks and Neal McCoy to name a few. Another up and coming country artist, special guest Carlyne Ray, will be performing for the two show event. The all ages show is from 5-7pm and another from 8-10pm which is for 19+. “Singer/Songwriter Carlyne Ray will be doing a set to kick things off and then I will hit the stage sharing stories and songs for the remainder of the show. I’ll be performing songs from my five albums plus some new ones and I’ll be looking to get the crowd involved in the show,” stated Prevost. Spence reached out to the country artist as he was familiar with her music and thought that the two of them would be an incredible fit. When asking Prevost about the up and coming performer, he stated that one of his favourite things about being involved in music is seeing new artists, and after watching some of her videos he said it will be a great show! The later show is sold out but there are some tickets left for the early show. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.ca and if you use the coupon code “Family25”, you will get 25% off the purchase of your tickets. “It's been a long year and a half for everyone in the community so it brings great joy to be able to get out and do this. We look forward to seeing you and raising funds for the Kinsmen at this well needed evening out,” said Prevost.
Federal Funding to Help With Martensville Road Repairs Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
The City of Martensville has made road repairs and upgrades a priority and will be working on several areas within the community this summer utilizing annual funding from the Federal Gas Tax Program. In order to obtain this funding, the City of Martensville is required to submit project applications, which describes each planned project. This year, there were five separate project applications submitted, with a total cost that came in slightly higher than what was budgeted; however, due to this funding not being fully utilized in 2020, the remaining amount will be taken from reserves. For the five projects, the total funding is $577,000, with the total funding per the 2021 budget sitting at $569,000 and a total of $8,300 being used from 2020 reserves. Projects include: - Repaving 6th Avenue South between 4th Street South and Fehr Crescent ($87,900) - Repaving 8th Avenue South from 4th Street South to 1st Street South ($117,700) - Roadway surface treatment on Main Street from 2nd Avenue to 8th Avenue ($158,700) - Repave Baycroft Drive from 3rd Street North to 5th Street North ($95,700) - Repave 6th Street North from Klassen Crescent to 8th Avenue North ($117,300) These projects were approved by Council at the June 15th meeting and construction is expected to begin in July and be completed by the end of August. For more information about upcoming roadway construction and other community news within Martensville, visit www.martensville.ca, or follow ‘City of Martensville’ on social media.

Focus on Passing Lanes Saving Lives in Saskatchewan Work is progressing on a number of new passing lane projects as part of the Government of Saskatchewan's plan to construct 30 sets of passing lanes over the next two years. This builds on the 27 sets constructed in the last four years. Construction is currently underway on two sets of passing lanes on Highway 2 north of Prince Albert and the last of 13 sets of passing lanes on Highway 39 between Milestone and the U.S. border. All are expected to be complete by late fall of 2021. "Safety is the primary concern of the Ministry of Highways," Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw said. "Passing lanes have proven a reliable way to improve safety on a number of highways, with plenty more to come." The 2020 Fall Tender Plan and the 2021 Spring Tender Plan include passing lane projects on: Highway 3 west of Prince Albert; Highway 5 east of Saskatoon; Highway 7 west of Kindersley; Highway 12 north of Martensville; Highway 14 west of Saskatoon to Asquith; Highway 16 west of Yorkton to Springside; and Highway 16 east of Clavet to Highway 6 junction. Passing lanes are typically a minimum two kilometres in length and are strategically designed to allow vehicles to safely pass slow moving vehicles and heavy trucks such as semi-trailer units. Studies have shown passing lanes can reduce collisions by as much as 25 per cent. Highway 10, the province’s first major passing lanes pilot project, has seen 75 per cent fewer fatal accidents from before the project to five years after its completion. “The passing lanes have ensured there are far fewer vehicle accidents, fatal crashes and injuries, allowing for safer travel and reduced emotional impacts on first responders who arrive at crash scenes,” Balgonie Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dave Campbell said. “Combined with the reduced travel time, the passing lanes have been a significant benefit to local residents and visitors alike.” The Government of Saskatchewan will be improving more than 1,350 km of provincial highways this year, the second of its 10-year Growth Plan goal to build and upgrade 10,000 km of highways. With this year’s projects, the province is ahead of the pace needed to meet this target. There will be $300 million in additional highways stimulus funds that will be invested over several years CALL 306-668-1093 or email in thin-membrane surface upgrades, passing lanes and advertising@martensvillemessenger.ca improvements to municipal roads and airports. The Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $10.6 billion in highways infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 17,100 km of Saskatchewan highways.

If just one per cent of Saskatchewan adults get their first COVID-19 vaccine shot in the next six days, the province will begin Step Three of its Re-Opening Roadmap on July 11. Currently, 69 per cent of those 18 and older have now received their first dose. If just three per cent of eligible Saskatchewan residents get their first COVID-19 vaccine shot in the next six days, the province will also lift all remaining public health restrictions on July 11. Currently, 67 per cent of those 12 and older have now received their first dose.

All residents 12+ can receive their first dose and second dose vaccinations are open to residents 50+ or anyone who received their first dose on or before April 15. Individuals diagnosed with or being treated for cancer and those who have received solid organ transplants will receive a letter of eligibility in the mail that will allow them priority access to a second dose. Second doses are also available in the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District to all residents 18+, based on the product's recommended interval from their first dose. Eligibility to book for second doses is based on age or date of first dose. Residents who meet at least one of these criteria are eligible for their second dose. When all persons 12 and older become eligible to receive their second doses starting June 24, vaccinations will be provided based on the manufacturer interval. For Moderna, this is 28 days after first dose. For Pfizer, this is 21 days after first dose. Note that residents may receive their second doses up to four months following their first dose but it's highly recommended that you receive your second dose as soon as you are eligible. A limited number of first doses of AstraZeneca have been administered since May 5 to those individuals who have contraindication for mRNA vaccines. If you received AstraZeneca as recommended by your health care provider after May 5, arrangements will be made to administer your second dose based on current, recommended intervals. Remember that while one dose of COVID-19 vaccine provides good protection against transmission, two doses are required for optimal protection, particularly against the Delta variant. Please receive your second dose as soon as you are eligible and maintain all public health measures until at least two weeks after your second dose. Vaccination appointments can be booked through the Saskatchewan Health Authority online at www.saskatchewan.ca/COVID19 or by calling 1-833-SaskVax (1-833-727-5829).

suspects who were driving an allegedly stolen truck from Manitoba. Constable Patton initiated a traffic stop with the truck in the town of Wolseley and during the course of the stop, while outside of his police vehicle, Patton was struck and killed by the truck and died on scene at approximately 8:00am. The truck proceeded to leave the scene and was later located in a rural area northeast of Francis, SK. An adult male and adult female; Alphonse Stanley Traverse, 41, and Marlene Velma Louise Pagee, 42, were located and arrested with the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Services. The suspects are charged with manslaughter for allegedly striking and killing the young Constable, as well as failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death, possession of stolen property, theft of a motor vehicle and breaches. Constable Patton had worked with the Indian Head Detachment since 2015, which consisted of his entire 6 years and four months of service within the RCMP. “This morning I, along with the Indian Head Detachment Commander and Saskatchewan RCMP Chaplain, had to tell Constable Patton’s wife the difficult news that he is not coming home…. I am heartbroken for her and her family. No one should have to wake up and learn their family member died as a result of doing their job and this is what happened today to Constable Patton’s loved ones,” Saskatchewan RCMP Commanding Officer, Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, stated in a release. Blackmore also expressed appreciation to a member of the public for providing medical assistance to Patton until emergency responders could arrive, as well as to farmers within the area who provided assistance to the responding officers who arrested the suspects. On Tuesday, June 15, Constable Patton’s body was brought to a funeral home within Wolseley and the RCMP, along with the town of Wolseley requested that people come show their support by wearing red and lining the streets as the procession traveled through the community.

Vaccine Complacency Now the Battle
Vaccines are allowing us to win the COVID-19 fight as Premier Scott Moe hoped and predicted they would. This is very good news. As of the writing of this column, we have just seen the fourth consecutive day of double-digit daily cases, reducing Saskatchewan’s seven-day average to 97 new COVID-19 cases per day. This is the lowest such average since early November when the first of three major waves hit the province. Those waves peaked at 292 average new cases per day on Dec. 12, 321 on Jan. 12 and 287 on April 16. While critics of the Saskatchewan Party government point to massive success of the Atlantic provinces, it is worth noting that Manitoba — with much stricter lockdown measures — spent 46 days this winter with an average daily case counts higher than Saskatchewan’s daily average ever was. It is also noteworthy that Manitoba has had twice the COVID-19 deaths and it’s impossible not to attribute this to success — especially among the more vulnerable older populations — to vaccines. Again as of the writing of this column, 91 per cent of those 80 years and older have received a first dose while 76 per cent have received a second dose. In the 70to 80-years-old category, 90 per cent have received a first dose and 54 per cent per cent have received a second dose. In the 60 to 70 years category, 84 per cent have received a first dose and 19 per cent have received a second dose that has just become eligible for this age group. The tangible result is fewer people dying — only 10 deaths in the first week of June and just 48 deaths in May. That compares with 55 deaths in April, 51 in March, 81 in February, 155 in January and 106 in December. (Up until last December, there had only been 47 deaths in the entire province.) Compare this with an average winter flu season where — after many also line up for vaccines — we usually have about 10 to 15 deaths and handful of hospitalizations. This winter, Regina and Saskatoon hospitals had to re-direct patients elsewhere because they were overrun with COVID-19 cases. Now, we are seeing both active case counts and hospitalizations reduced to levels we haven’t seen since the start of the winter. Given this success, so it’s rather puzzling why the lines for vaccines aren’t longer. While older age brackets have taken up the challenge to get their vaccines, younger generations have been more hesitant … or maybe simply more complacent. In fact, we have had nine straight days now where second doses have out-paced first doses. On the day of the Sask. Party government’s press conference last week, 5, 564 of the 6,742 were second shots. Also as of the writing of this column, about 40,000 of 147, 466 Saskatchewan people 50 to 59-yearsold had not received a shot. Another 50,000 of the 151,896 40 to 49-year-olds were unvaccinated. More than 80,000 of the 184,246 30 to 39-years-old and slightly less than 100,000 of 18 to 29-years were also unvaccinated. Some of this can be attributed to such age groups becoming eligible more recently, but the carefree, invulnerability of youth is clearly a factor and judging by the numbers, it’s appears to another one of those youthful mistakes. While COVID-19 cases are dropping, it’s those that are unvaccinated who are now getting sick. May numbers also reveal 5,296 COVID-19 cases — 92 per cent of which were unvaccinated or those who gotten their first dose within the previous three weeks. "We have an opportunity to basically end the pandemic, the worst aspects of the pandemic, as early as July,” said Saskatchewan Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab last week. “Why wouldn't we take it?" It is a very good question.

Martensville High School (MHS) Grad Parent Committee Requests Help From City Council For 2021 Graduation Celebrations
VMS Celebrates Grade 8 Classes This month VMS celebrates their grade eight classes with various activities, treats and a Come ‘n Go Farewell being held later this month. Congrats to our grade 8’s and all the best to each of you!

For the second year in a row, Martensville High School (MHS) Grade 12 graduates are unable to celebrate as they normally would at this time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. At the June 8 Committee of the Whole meeting, Martensville City Council was asked to approve a request from the MHS Grad Parent Committee to help with celebrations planned for later this month. One of the requests is for a donation of $1500 to be used towards a fireworks display on the evening before their Grad celebration, Thursday, June 24. The Grad Parent Committee are
also asking for council’s approval to allow a parade showcasing the Class of 2021 on graduation day Friday, June 25. The same request was made for the 2020 Graduating class and was approved by Martensville City Council. When discussing this year’s request at the Committee of the Whole meeting, councillors seemed in favour, as money is in the city’s 2021 budget, and they felt it was important to help publicly acknowledge the achievements of the graduates. A final decision was made at the June 15 Regular Council meeting, with Council voting in favor of the request.

Exciting news came from Martensville High School this week as MHS teacher Sandra Labrecque received the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) Female Coach of the Year Award for the Central Valley Athletic Conference. This award comes leading up to Labrecque’s retirement from MHS this year. Myles Loeffler and Rory Bergermann, both MHS teachers, submitted the nomination form recommending Labrecque for this prestigious award, acknowledging her dedication to the students that she has taught throughout the course of her career, both inside and outside of the classroom. Not only is Labrecque respected as a Mathematics teacher, she is also a integral part of the MHS athletic program, coaching a variety of sports, including her contribution to the Track & Field program as both a coach and official, as well as coaching MHS cross-country, basketball and volleyball teams. Labrecque also contributed to many sports tournaments and championships throughout the years. Bergermann, who has coached track & field with Labrecque for 22 years, commented that “Sandra always readily volunteered and took on the jobs that require "heavy-lifting". She handles all of her coaching and volunteer roles with professionalism and competency. I will miss having her on our staff and wish her well in her retirement.” In addition to being heavily involved with coaching at MHS, Labrecque has also played a major role within the Provincial Student Leadership Conference, the Martensville ‘Travel Club’, MHS graduation ceremonies, and more. “Sandra could always be counted on to help out wherever there was a need and you always knew that she would get the job done and get it done right! She was such an important part of the fabric of MHS and providing ABOVE: Sandra Labrecque with the quality opportunities for students and Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association student athletes in so many different (SHSAA) Female Coach of the Year Award for the areas,” Loeffler stated.
