MHS Prepares to Portray Classic Story of ‘Little Women’ Cadderly Kingsbury, Martensville Messenger

Martensville High School (MHS) has put together an ambitious, yet classically wonderful play. This year, a female-dominated crew is performing the muchknown novel Little Women, directed by Micah Robinson.

The novel takes place during the Civil War and follows four sisters on their journey of growing up. When they lose their fortune and their father leaves to fight, the girls rely on one another to help them through the struggles of sickness, poverty, love and death.

Robinson says that “good theater is good people”, and that this year, there’s a positive, passionate, excited group of students that really bring this play to life. These talented, young performers continuously work long, hard hours in order to make this play successful.

“They’re people that continue to tighten the screws on something, until the date of the performance, and not just say, ‘I think this is good enough,’ then stop. I like it when you keep raising the bar for yourself and these people are doing that,” Robinson explained. He believes that the cast members are skilled beyond their years, and are able to not only portray a character, but really become them.

The play, that Robinson calls a “timeless classic” has been in the works since each night. Tickets will be available at the Martensville High School Main Office on January September, and everyone on and off set has put in countless hours in order to make 7th and can be reserved by calling (306) 931-2230. The evening shows feature dessert and what this possible. In addition to the wonderful actors that dedicate their time, Robinson is sure to be a fantastic experience for all.

Tragic Death of 11 Year Old Felt Across the Province Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Tragedy struck on Friday, December 21st when a collision took place on Highway #305 and Highway #11 near Warman. At approximately 6:40pm, members of the Warman detachment of the RCMP responded to a report of a head-on two vehicle accident involving a white half-ton truck and a blue half-ton truck.

Upon arrival, two occupants from the white truck were transported to hospital with undetermined injuries, while the third occupant, 11 year-old Sophie Mae Schnurr was pronounced dead at the scene. The adult male driver and lone occupant of the second truck was also transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

A traffic collision analyst was called to the scene and conducted an investigation which saw the closure of Highway 305 until the investigation was completed the next day.

Police noted that they believed that alcohol was a factor in relation to the driver of the blue truck.

Following the accident, an outpouring of support for the Schnurr family was seen on social media, with many encouraging motorists to ensure they do not drive impaired in order to avoid life altering situations such as the one that claimed an innocent 11 year-olds life.

As a way to help the Warman family with funeral expenses, family friend Dustin Riley created a GoFundMe page, which went viral across social media. An initial goal of $10,000 was set and as of Sunday, December 30th, that number had reached almost $27,000. “This accident has hit home to many, but for them it has been a devastating time. We want to ensure they are taken care of and most of all, their other daughter Grace is looked after,” the page stated. Any additional money raised will be donated to a good cause in Sophie’s name.

Sophie, daughter of Sam and Dawn Schnurr was laid to rest on Saturday, December 29th. In her obituary, Sophie was described as “a beautiful girl with so much zest for life and family. Her sweet, caring, funny, intelligent, kind soul touched so many.”

In 2018, new provincial legislation took effect that now sees tougher impaired driving laws including zero-tolerance for drug-impaired driving and stronger penalties for impaired drivers transporting children. Additionally, on December 18th, a new federal law came into force that now enables police to demand a roadside breath sample from any driver who has been lawfully stopped.

SGI has made their January Traffic Spotlight all about impaired driving, noting that impaired driving is the leading cause of death on Saskatchewan roads. “The acceptable number for drivers charged with impairment is zero. The acceptable number for people killed and hurt by impaired driving is zero. Every driver has the responsibility to never get behind the wheel when they’re impaired,” Penny McCune, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund, stated.

SGI noted that the number one cause of death on Saskatchewan roads is a completely preventable one.

Keeping our Pets Safe this Winter

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible:

If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe.

- Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason.

-Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws. At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

-Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

-Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to delivery excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Martensville Hosts Third Annual Senior’s Globe Walk Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville will be entering their third year of being involved with the Saskatoon Council on Aging Inc. (SCOA) Senior’s Globe Walk, which will run from January to April at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion. This year’s theme is “Exploring Canada’s National Parks”, which will encourage teams to collectively gather as many kilometers as possible to travel a map of Canada’s beautiful parks. For walkers, 1300 steps will equal one kilometer, and for other activities, 30 minutes will be the equivalent of two kilometers.

At the end of each month, all totals will be collected by the team captain and applied to the SCOA Globe Walk Coordinator. SCOA encourages participants to utilize fitness tracking devices, pedometers or cell phone apps to help keep track of their efforts as well as to help motivate them to reach their goals.

Last year, a total of 105 participants registered with the program in Martensville, and Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator hopes that this year, they will meet her goal of 130. “It has been great to see this program grow and see more of our older population get involved. We continue to see new faces every winter who continue over the spring, summer and into the fall. It is great to see friendships develop and a renewed spirit for physical activity.”

The partnership between the City of Martensville and SCOA came from community consultations that showed that more older adults had identified the need for more physical activity and social opportunities during the winter months.

The Globe Walk is free to all participants that are 50+ and offers them a warm, comfortable environment to come together and take part in physical activity. Those interested can pick up brochures and registration forms at the MAP front desk.

From January to April, all walkers will keep track of all miles walked and the collective miles for each team will be applied to National Parks map each month. The map and all progress will be published on the SCOA website monthly. Visit https:// scoaglobewalk.net/news/ for updates.

Where in The World - Mad Marrakesh Submitted by Dean Johnston

One of the four original imperial cities of Morocco, Marrakesh holds a special place in the hearts of Moroccans and tourists alike. The official capital of its region and unofficial capital of southern Morocco, Marrakesh has been drawing visitors for centuries with its exotic beauty, exciting street life and ancient architecture.

The beating heart of Marrakesh is its central “medina”. While modern development continues to expand outside its ancient walls, inside the medina traditional Moroccan life carries on, in many ways unchanged for centuries. Crowded, frantic, boisterous, colourful and endlessly fascinating, the experience of visiting the Marrakesh medina is unparalleled (except, possibly, by that of its northern counterpart in Fes). Within these walled fortifications, the streets (a term which I use very loosely) are narrow, busy and hectic. And, while this may sound unappealing to some, the vibrancy, variety and communal atmosphere are somehow compelling. Although it usually smells pretty bad.

There are two main activities that need to be experienced during any visit to Marrakesh. One, a slow, meandering exploration of the “souqs”. This ancient term refers to a market or commercial quarter, common throughout Africa and the Middle East. The medina is divided into many different souqs, each dedicated to a particular industry or product. Don’t be fooled by that vague attempt at organization, however, as the covered walkways still wind confusingly through a maze of shops of all sizes and styles, with seemingly little thought to logic or direction. The shops within sell everything you could possibly imagine - from handcrafted teapots to fresh leatherwork to tourist t-shirts to precarious pyramids of spice to colourful scarves to the ladies underwear that trio of young men leeringly sell in bulk. Whether you plan to buy, in which case I recommend 20-30 hours of online haggling tutorials before you arrive, or simply want to browse, marvel and recoil as the situation warrants, the souqs are an unforgettable adventure. The second activity that shouldn’t be missed – getting hopelessly lost among the souqs. Don’t worry, this one doesn’t require any special preparation.

Surprisingly, though, hidden within all this mess of madness and humanity are hundreds of beautiful “riads”, classic Moroccan homes. Often indistinguishable from the outside, visitors step through a heavy old door, leave all the noise and pandemonium behind and suddenly find themselves amid tranquil beauty, exotic architecture and the shocking green of the central courtyard areas around which the riads are built. be cool, dark and intricately decorated, and the nicer riads often feature a rooftop terrace with views and a lounging pool. Needless to say, staying in a riad in the heart of the medina is a great way to increase your enjoyment during a visit to Marrakesh.

The true soul of the city, however, is Djemaa elFna. This is the main square, and the place around which all medina life revolves. Surrounded by beautiful old restaurants with terraces overlooking the action, circled by horse-drawn carts called “caleches”, and filled with every type of street hawker known to man, Djemaa el-Fna feels like if you were pulled out of the crowd and forced to participate in a 16th century circus where all the acts involved either an endangered animal or someone lying to you. And then still having to tip. As soon as the sun starts to go down the food stalls are pulled in, coalescing into a dense pack of crowded, raucous, pungent pots and sizzling grills, a constant cloud of smoke lingering overhead while tourists and locals sit shoulder to shoulder eating tajine, couscous and harira. The after-dinner entertainment can include anything from snake charming to traditional dancing to tarot card readings to some old man doing clumsy cartwheels. And that, my friends, is Marrakesh.

1. Some perspective on the affordability of Morocco: most beautiful, timeless Marrakeshi riads cost roughly the same as the beautiful, timeless Motel 6 in Billings, Montana.

2. Not only is Marrakesh one of my all-time favourite cities, it is definitely the first place I go when I need to buy a severed sheep’s head.

3. A souq is like the ancient version of a mall, but with more donkeys.

A lot more.

4.Many young Moroccan men hang out near the most confusing sections of the medina and charge tourists a small fee for directions. They are not particularly concerned with where you are actually trying to go, however.

5. Our riad featured a lethargic turtle with half-closed eyes. Is that something you might be into?

Passing Snowplows With Blue And Amber At Unsafe Speeds May Have You Seeing Blue And Red

The Government of Saskatchewan reminds drivers that new laws designed to improve snowplow safety are in effect.

Drivers must slow to 60 kilometres per hour when passing any highway equipment, emergency vehicle or tow truck that is stopped on a highway with warning lights in operation.

“With winter upon us, snowplow operators are out working to provide safe road conditions for you and your family,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Lori Carr said. “Unfortunately, they sometimes encounter vehicles that are travelling at speeds or passing in ways that make working conditions unsafe. We remind all citizens to drive with caution and to be familiar with the rules of the road.” Snowplows that have their flashing blue lights on are actively engaged in plowing snow, drivers can help keep roads safe this winter by: • slowing to 60 kilometres per hour when highway equipment or other emergency vehicles are stopped with warning lights in operation; • staying back and staying safe, since snowplows can create mini-blizzards known as the “Snow Zone”; • allowing snowplows sufficient time and space, since they will pull over about every ten kilometres or when safe to do so; • driving according to weather and road conditions; • passing only when safe to do so; and • planning ahead by using the Highway Hotline www.saskatchewan.ca/highwayhotline or calling 511.

Moe Has Reason to Be Comfortable in 2019

No politician should ever get too comfortable, especially one that’s barely a year into his new job. Things in politics can change rapidly for a new premier and leader like Scott Moe. Given that he inherited a decade-old government with more than its share of deficit, debt and spending issues included questionable investments in the Global Transportation Hub (GTH) and the Regina bypass there are all that many more reasons for Moe to be cautious.

Finally, one might think that what insecurities Moe might have would be enhanced by the reality he was taking over from the popular Brad Wall, but all that said, there are likely few leaders in Canada right now in a more enviable position than Scott Moe going into 2019.

Here is why: For starters, it’s increasing clear that

Moe’s Sask. Party government does seem to be digging its way out of its deficit/balanced budget mess.

When it presents its 2019-20 budget in March, it is expected to serve notice that it has accomplished that.

Notwithstanding the debt issues, if Moe can demonstrate fiscal competency that seems to have gone missing in the Sask. Party government, it would be a major victory coming at a time when the Saskatchewan economy continues to go through a major downturn.

What’s also to Moe’s advantage is that it won’t have to go the polls in 2019, having set the next election date for Oct. 26, 2020. That affords him additional time to work on a better budget path and hope for an economic turnaround leading into the 2020 election, but the extra time in 2019 before a provincial election may be of great value to Moe for another reason.

Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will go to the polls in 2019 and that affords Moe a few added advantages. It allows Moe to carry on his popular campaign opposing the federal carbon tax against an unpopular Prime Minister in this province. This seems to be a nolose situation.

Should Trudeau’s Liberals pull out another victory, it is likely to reinforce what many in Saskatchewan dislike about his government - much to the benefit of Moe and the Sask. Party. Even should Trudeau lose, Moe stands to bask in both the victory and the honeymoon period of a new Andrew Scheer Conservative government; however,

any success Moe finds in 2019 will likely have more to do with what’s gone on in the past in Saskatchewan politics than what’s likely to happen in the coming year.

One of the sharpest criticism of Moe - fairly or unfairly - has been his penchant to pander to rural voters.

All one has to do is consider the rural vote numbers from the 2016 election to see why.

For example, in the eight rural seats in southeast Saskatchewan, the Sask. Party had 25,725-vote advantage over the NDP - 38,230 votes to 12,505.

In the four rural southeast seats, the Sask. Party held a 20,593 advantage over the NDP - 24,226 votes to 3,633. In the five west central Saskatchewan, the 35,582 Sask. Party votes in 2016 compared with the 7,877 votes gave the governing party a 27,695-vote advantage.

In northeast Saskatchewan’s six seats, the Sask.

Party had 17,305 more votes - 29,189 compared with 11,884 votes for the NDP and in five northwest rural seats, the Sask. Party was 17,230 votes ahead - 23,589 compared with 6,368 for the NDP.

Of course, things could change in the 2020 vote, but, give the massive difference the Sask. Party is almost guaranteed to retake all 29 rural seats.

That would mean the Sask. Party would only need another three more seats for a majority. Maybe it won’t win all 19 urban seats, but it Moe appears to be a rather good position. Nothing is ever guaranteed in politics, but Moe seems to be in as good a position as any politician in 2019.

My name is Cadderly and I have just been added to the Messenger Family! I am currently in Grade 11 at Martensville High, but am going to be attending school for media and journalism next semester. I have always loved writing and got into photography while entering high school. After receiving my first camera, I began charging for photoshoots, and discovering the world of photojournalism. Besides writing and photography, I enjoy soccer, wrestling, reading and drawing. Over the summer, I also work at Skydive Saskatoon, and enjoy being able to pack parachutes, as well as meet other people in our community.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Headed into the year of 2019 here is how things are looking for Canadian teams in the NHL. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the best team on this side of the boarder but they are still 10 points back of the league leading Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto had a small rough patch where they lost four of five games but seem to have things back on track with a 6-3-1 record in their last 10.

The Leafs are second in the NHL and right behind them are the Winnipeg Jets who are also tied with the Calgary Flames for 3rd in the league.

The Flames and Jets met on December 27th and Calgary came out with a 4-1 win but Winnipeg has been the hotter team as of late with a 7-3 record in their last 10. The Flames on the other had have had a tougher last 10 with a 5-3-2 record.

Calgary did finish off 2018 on a high note that saw Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau, and Sean Monahan combine for 13 points in a wild 8-5 win over their Division rival San Jose Sharks on December 31st.

It’s a bit of a drop from the 4th overall Calgary Flames to the next best Canadian team being the 13th overall Montreal Canadiens.

The Habs are currently in the final Wild Card spot in the East but only by one point over the New York Islanders. Montreal has a 6-4 record in their last 10 games. The Vancouver Canucks are on the other side of the playoff picture just 2 points behind Dallas for the final Wild Card spot in the West.

The Canucks have been up and down all season and have a 19-19-4 record which puts them 18th overall in the NHL.

The Edmonton Oilers seemed to have lost their Hitchcock magic and returned to the same nonplayoff contending team they were earlier in the season.

Edmonton has lost their last six games in a row and have allowed four or more goals in each of those losses.

Finally, last of the Canadian teams and last in the NHL are the Ottawa Senators who have lost five in a row and have just two wins in their last 10 games. The Sens currently have a 15-21-4 record and have basically no chance of making the playoffs this year.
