Credit Cards 101 – Tips For Students

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) is offering advice to students about credit card usage to help them responsibly use their first credit card. When used responsibly, a credit card can help build good credit history which is important when it’s time to buy a car or a house. “Making late credit card payments or skipping them will seriously harm your credit rating,” FCAA’s Consumer Credit Division Director Cory Peters said. “It’s important to always make your minimum payment on time. Better yet, if you always pay the full balance on time you can avoid interest charges entirely.”

Keep the following tips in mind when getting a credit card: • Always make your minimum payment on time – At the very least, make the minimum payment by the due date and to avoid interest charges, pay off the full balance on time.

• Don’t share your PIN – If something happens to your account and you’ve given someone your PIN, you are on the hook.

• Avoid cash advances - There often is a fee associated with this and interest is charged immediately.

• Read your statement – Make sure your transactions recorded in the statement are accurate and check for any fraudulent and unauthorized charges. Fraudsters can sometimes gain access to your card without you noticing it.

• It’s not free cash – If you can’t afford to pay it off right away, think twice before buying something with your credit card. Not all credit cards are the same, offering different interest rates, fees and rewards. Make sure to research which one is the right fit for you.

TRAFFIC No Injuries in Highway 12 Accident January 23, 2019 at 9:10 a.m. Police received a complaint of a single vehicle accident on Highway 12 near Martensville.

Police attended the scene and found that the 21 year old female driver of the vehicle from Saskatoon lost control of the vehicle due to strong winds and blowing snow.

The vehicle hit a road sign and went into the ditch.

The driver was not injured.

There were no charges.

Erratic Driver Reported in Warman January 27, 2019 at 4:25 a.m. Police received a complaint of an erratic driver in Warman. The caller reported that the vehicle was driving erratically and threw something from the window of the vehicle.

Police conducted patrols but were unable to locate any vehicles matching the description provided.

There were no further calls received.

Stolen Vehicle Located Near Martensville January 21, 2019 at 5:15 p.m. Police received a Sudoku Answers

complaint of a possible stolen vehicle at a residence near Martensville. The caller reported that the vehicle was left on their property and felt it might be stolen. Police attended and found that the vehicle had been previously reported stolen from Saskatoon. The vehicle was towed to Saskatoon for further investigation by Saskatoon Police Service.

Vehicle Stolen From Calgary Located in Corman Park January 21, 2019 at 4:40 p.m. Police received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle in a field in the RM of Corman Park. Police checked the plate number on the vehicle and found that it had been previously reported stolen from Calgary. The vehicle was towed to Saskatoon for further investigation by the Forensic Identification section.

Police Respond to Possible Break In January 24, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. Police received a complaint of a possible break and enter to a residence in Martensville.

The caller reported that the neighbor’s door was left wide open and felt this was suspicious. Police

attended the residence and found that the door was open, but locked. The residence was checked.

The residence had not been broken into.

Charges Laid in Raddison Armed Robbery January 26, 2019 at 11:10 p.m. Police received a complaint of an armed robbery at a business in Radisson. Police from a number of Detachments responded to the call. A short time later a vehicle that was involved in the robbery was located and 3 males and 3 females from various locations were arrested and held in custody to appear in court on a number of charges.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures - this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

NHL All-Star weekend was once again a great success for the game of hockey. Recapping last week’s festivities in San Jose starts with the first challenge of the NHL All-Star Skills Competition, the fastest skater. For the third year in a row the lightning fast Connor McDavid took home the crown but the biggest surprise of the event was USA National Women’s hockey star Kendall Coyne. She was asked to participate by Nathan McKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche who had injured his foot in the last game before the break. Coyne was the first to participate and finished with a spectacular time of 14.346 seconds which beat young Arizona Coyotes star Clayton Keller and was less than a second away from McDavid’s 13.378 second lap. She wasn’t the only female to surprise at the Skills Competition but I’ll get to that later.

Next up was the puck control in which players had to stick-handle through pucks, weave around pylons and flip the puck through raised targets before firing the puck into the net to stop the clock. For the second year in a row Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames was named the champion after setting a time of 27.045 seconds, narrowly beating out the silky mitts of Chicago’s Patrick Kane who had a tie of 28.61 seconds. Then it was the goaltenders time to shine (which is very rare at an AllStar event) in the save streak competition. Goalies from each division would take breakaways from opposing players while trying to rack up the longest streak of consecutive saves. This time there was not a repeating champion as Marc-Andre Fleury only managed six stops in a row. This year it was the oldest (and probably the best looking) player who took home the prize. The New York Rangers 36-yearold Henrik Lundqvist stopped 12 consecutive shots to beat Tampa’s Andrei Vasalevski who had stopped eight in a row.

We had seen speed, puck handling and goaltending, but then it was time for the passers to take the stage in what proved to be the most difficult challenge. Now remember that really fast girl I was talking about earlier? Yea she wasn’t the only National women’s star in attendance. USA’s Brianna Decker was also chosen as one of the ladies to “demonstrate” an event. While the Oilers Leon Draisaitl officially won the event with a time of 1 minute and 9 seconds, it turns out that Decker’s “demonstration” was actually faster by three seconds! Each winner of the Skills Competition was awarded $25,000 if they won an event but since Decker wasn’t an official competitor she was not given any prize money.

That is until her sponsor CCM found out and gave her the 25K and then the NHL followed by giving each of the women that were at the competition a $25,000 donation to a charity of their choosing.

There were still two events left for the day including the always popular hardest shot. With the big cannons of Chara, Weber, and Ovechkin out it was a toss-up as to who would take it home. It turned out to be another Capital by the name of John Carlson who registered a shot of 102.8 mph.

Last but not least was the accuracy shooting event where players had to hit light up targets in the four corners of the net and one on the five-hole. Boston Bruins sniper David Pastrnak was given the crown after hitting all the targets in just 11.3 seconds.

That wrapped up Friday night and set the stage for the big game on Saturday. In the first minigame the Central Division hammered the Pacific 10-4 followed by the Metropolitan Division getting by the Atlantic 7-4. The Metro would keep rolling in the final game and beat the Central by a score of 10-5.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had 8 points in the games and was named All-Star MVP.

City of Martensville Hosts Winter Fun Fest This Weekend Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Winter can often feel like it is dragging on forever, and cooler weather makes it difficult to get out and enjoy some fresh air. We often find ourselves going into our own versions of “hibernation”, especially in the January and February stretch.

The City of Martensville hosts Winter Fun Fest each year in order to provide an opportunity for local residents to get out and spend a day participating in some family friendly winter activities. This year, the event will be held on February 2nd from 2pm6:30pm at the North Ridge Community Centre. Admission for the event will be by donation to the local KidSport program.

A wide variety of activities will be offered, both inside and outside. Indoor options include inflatables, balloon fun, crafts, Singing with Sylvia, games, soap carving and more. Outdoor options include skating, street hockey, kick sledding, sleigh rides (weather depending), a hot dog roast and the popular tree burning and fireworks to end the evening.

New this year is Crokicurl, which has been growing in popularity within other communities.

“We thought we would hop on the bandwagon and give it a shot. It is the rules of Crokinole with the game of curling combined. If it goes over well and people are enjoying it, the City plans to bring it back for the entire winter season next year,” Karly Russin, City of Martensville Program Coordinator, explained.

For this year, the Crokicurl rink will be a smaller version to use as a test run, and as Russin explained, if it proves to be a popular addition to the community, a full version will be created for next winter.

For those that are interested in trying out the game, it is located next to the outdoor skating area across from North Ridge Community Centre.

An ‘Incredible’ Opportunity Cadderly Kingsbury, Martensville Messenger

Zac Cross, a 17 year old from Martensville, is living the life that thousands of people only dream of. The Martensville High School student released his first single ‘Incredible’ on January 27, 2019.

“It’s insane having a song that you can call your own on streaming and music store apps. It feels like my work paid off!” Cross said in an interview. “It’s so weird because I’m not used to having people referred to as fans. I never know what’s around the corner, but I can guarantee that I want to continue with music and film.”

For Cross, his musical journey wasn’t a childhood dream, like many others. Cross went through numerous ups and downs until he found the joy of music and singing. “I started vocal lessons about two and a half years after my great grandma died. She was a very musical person and I didn’t really enjoy music until after I realized how much she loved it. She kind of inspired it after she passed away and then, probably a year later, I got into the industry part of it.”

Working with an agency based out of Toronto, Cross received an email from them stating, ‘if you can sing, would you like to skype this music producer?’ The producer they were referencing to was Roy Hamilton III, who has worked with Michael Jackson, *NYSNC, Brittney Spears, and many more popular artists. Hamilton was planning to relocate to Toronto and was on the hunt for talented rising stars. Cross decided to take the leap and did a mini-audition via Skype, which went well and led to a live audition in Toronto. One thing led to another, and before he knew it, Cross was scheduled to record a song. “In the song, though, there were some notes I couldn’t quite hit, so I came back to Martensville and worked with my vocal coach, Danny, and I practiced over and over until I could record it. Everything was done in October, now here we are,” the young musician said.

Cross met with song writers and numerous other professionals, who, much to his surprise, encouraged him to be creative and wanted his input.

Through the collaboration, a song that Cross is proud to put his name on was created. “We all worked together to try to make something great. My favorite lyric is the opening of the song. The lyrics are kind of about liking somebody, and just thinking they’re incredible and wanting to make someone feel good,” Cross explained.

Using his own experiences and feelings helped Zac add a level of his own personality to the song.

When asked about the struggles of balancing teen life with a music career, Cross acknowledged that it can be a struggle. “It’s overwhelming, honestly, cause I’m usually so busy with work stuff and school stuff, that I have no time for a social life, which really sucks.

School is now a secondary thing, and I used to always put it first.”

To see this kind of success at such a young age, Cross noted that the support from his friends, family and fans have a huge incentive for him. “It’s such great motivation, having people support what I’m doing.”

Provincial Games Slated

The Peewee A Villains, coached by Koby Unser and Matt Hale, will take part in round 1 of provincials, playing against North Battleford. Their first home game will be game #1 of the 2 game series, and will be held on Thursday, February 28th in Martensville. Puck drop will be at 7:30pm.

Game #2 will be held in North Battleford on Saturday, March 2nd at 6:30pm.

The Bantam A Marauder team will take on Warman in round 1 of provincials.

Game 1 will be held in Martensville on Tuesday, Feb 26th at 7:30pm.

Game 2 will be held in Warman at the Diamond arena, on Saturday, March 2nd at 6:30pm.

The Midget A Villains, coached by Dalton Baycroft, also drew North Battleford for round 1 of provincials.

Game #1 will be held in North Battleford on Sunday, Feb 24th at 5:00pm.

Game #2 will be held at home in Martensville on Saturday, March 2nd at 4:30pm.

Maddogs Staying in Shape Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The Maddogs Football program started their winter conditioning that runs from January to March. The tackle players have sessions at the MAP and are also doing sessions at Crossfit.

New to the winter program this year are six sessions at Soul Power.

The coaches are keeping the players active over the winter in a fun non-competitive manor. The Maddog flag players are also taking registration for a winter fun program that will take place until April.

The Maddogs are having a series of three information nights to recruit new players into the program. The first night was held at Venture Heights school on January 25. Information was shared on how to register for the spring and fall programs.

The young players were also taken through a series of fun drills to give them some exposure to the game of football. They also had an opportunity to try on some of the equipment. Marty Maddog was even in attendance.

There are also two more information nights scheduled on January 31 in Waldheim at 7:30 and February 6 in Warman at 7:00 at the Legends. Registration is now open online. Wall’s PAC Involvement Raises Questions

When politicians are done being politicians, should they be done with politics? The obvious answer would seem to be no. Once out of formal public life, they should be like anyone else and get to do whatever they want, but it may be a bit more complicated than that. The reason we have conflict of interest rules for politicians while they are in office is to prevent situations where those we elect start making decisions for their own benefit and we have determined, and rightly so, that such conflict rules should be extended to life immediately after politics.

After all, it would be wrong to have a prime minister, premier or high-ranking cabinet walk out of political life straight into a corporate office or union executive role and exercise on behalf of his or her new employer.

For that reason, we have a cooling off period of about a year for those leaving public office. The only question is whether the cooling off period should be longer.

Finally, let us recognize that there are also direct ties between right-wing parties and corporations and leftwing parties and labour. All one has to do is look at campaign donations to see that, but neither business nor labour ever seems especially satisfied exercising their influence strictly through donations. (And that is something that’s getting harder to do in most provinces other than Saskatchewan where there are no limits to campaign contributions.)

One of the creative solutions is organizations that run parallel to parties that are known as Political Action Committees (PACs). PACs, which have long-existed in U.S. politics don’t exist to exercise direct influence for specific businesses. However, they do exist to play a big role in influencing government policy like lower taxes for businesses. As such, they provide an added advantage to parties by doing things parties can’t afford to do or don’t strategically want to do.

This takes us to what former Saskatchewan Boxer Justin Trudeau is outmatched by Chinese panda Premier Brad Wall has been up to since leaving politics a year ago. He has been travelling from Swift Current to Calgary to work as a special adviser at the law firm of Osler, Hoskins & Harcourt LLP, but Wall has also been giving public speeches opposing the federal carbon tax and Bill C-69 business says will impose strict environmental regulations on pipeline development. Such policies are justifying the feelings of western alienation, Wall is saying in his speeches.

Wall has also helped found and raise money for a Canadian PAC called the Buffalo Project. "[Buffalo Project] was spawned from some thoughts of ex-premier Brad Wall,” Calgary businessman Bill Turnbull, one of six businessmen who helped found Project Buffalo, told the CBC’s Adam Hunter. “There were a group of us in Calgary who were becoming very concerned."

Turnbull went on to stress Project Buffalo is not a separatist group, but is concerned with the way the Liberal government was driving Western separatist sentiments, something Wall has addressed a lot in in his speeches. "We all thought that the brightest tool in the shed was ex-premier [Wall] to talk about these issues,” Turnbull told Hunter. “We made overtures to him and the Buffalo Project was created. Brad's involvement early on was to help us formulate this. To pull a larger group than the founding group together in hopes to raise some money so that we could make a difference."

Many may find little wrong with this way of doing things and many will agree with the sentiments behind Project Buffalo, but does it raise questions about PACs and what role ex-politicians should play in fronting them? Do we want this in our political system? At the very least, Wall’s new lobbyist job gives us something to ponder.

Young Martensville Entrepreneurs Recognized at Edwards School of Business Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

While summer may seem like it is a long ways away, three young Martensville residents are already hard at work making plans to expand their lawn mowing business. The Grass Barbers is run by cousins; Smith (14) and Hudson (13) Boutin and Ethan Pierce (14), who started the business in 2016. Since inception, the three have proven their entrepreneurial spirit by growing their business each year.

The idea behind the business initially started when the three boys wanted to earn some extra money, so they began cutting grass for family members. At the time, Smith and Hudson’s father Ryan would drive the trio to each of their jobs in order to help them haul their equipment. They saw that there was a demand for their services, and thus, they soon grew from working for relatives, to bringing on new clients.

In 2017 the business was given the name ‘The Grass Barbers’ and the three boys attended the Martensville Community Expo to help spread the word within the community. They created a website, made T-shirts and handed out business cards and flyers while going door-to-door promoting their services.

This proved to be a successful marketing strategy, as they saw immediate growth.

With savings from their 2017 season, The Grass Barbers purchased two trailers for hauling equipment with their bicycles prior to summer 2018. The trailers, which don the business name and logo, have gained much exposure for the young entrepreneurs, as they often have people approaching them asking if they are available.

During their busy season, the three typically work approximately four mornings a week and cut five to six lawns per day. While this keeps them busy, the three have big plans for the future of their company. “We are really happy with the success that we have seen, but it is not where I want it to be yet. We want it to be even bigger, so we are now looking into a franchising option for people. Our plan is to have an online store set up so people can buy trailers, T-shirts, business cards and more from our website and then they would pay us a monthly fee so we can make a profit based on that. It will give other kids a chance to make some extra money as well,” Smith explained. According to Smith’s father, the monthly fees would cover advertising, phone and website costs. Plans for franchising are not set in stone at this time, but plans are in the works for this year.

Through all of their hard work, the boys gained attention from local media and from there, they were contacted by Marlene and Gord Haddock who were organizing the first ever ‘Get a Bigger Wagon Young Entrepreneur Awards’. The trio worked together to create a biography to submit for the awards.

The event was held at the Edwards School of Business where it was announced that The Grass Barbers were the winners of the 13-15 year old category. “Marlene and Gord wanted to start an award for young entrepreneurs who started their own business and give them a reward for being entrepreneurial. This was the first year that the event was held and we were really surprised and happy to hear them call our names,” Ethan said. With their award, the business was provided with $1000 to go towards growth, and also had a plaque with their business name installed at the Edwards School of Business. With the prize money, the cousins plan to purchase more trailers for the franchises, do more marketing and build a store on their website to sell The Grass Barber items.

Since they started the business, Hudson, Ethan and Smith have learned many lessons about being entrepreneurs and have made changes to their business model based on these lessons. Smith noted that some of the things that he has learned over the years is how to talk to customers with confidence and also the dedication that it takes in order to be successful. “With our business, we are always working on some of the nicest days of summer, so there are times that you don’t want to work and want to enjoy the weather, but we made a commitment to our customers, so we make sure that we get out there and get our jobs done,” Smith explained.

For Ethan, he felt as though he has learned much about the marketing aspect of business. “Basically learning how to get the word out to people and how you try to do everything that you can in order to see your business succeed. We did the Expo, went in the parade and did an interview on CTV to work at getting our name out there as much as we can.”

Hudson is grateful for the lesson he learned about how work can actually be fun, especially when you are working with your family members. He also stated that one of the things that stands out most for him is the gratitude that they feel for each of their customers for supporting them. “Getting up and going to work can be really enjoyable and being able to see the faces of our customers who are really happy with the work that we did is really nice. We are really thankful to all of our clients who got us to cut their lawn and helped us grow our business.”
