Love What’s Local This Valentines Day Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) is celebrating Valentine’s Day in a unique way this year. As part of their ‘Love What’s Local’ initiative, they are holding a contest that will run from February 1st to 13th.

“Part of the Love What’s Local initiative is to showcase our local businesses, promote them and encourage people within the region to shop local. We decided to reach out to a variety of our Chamber members to see if they would be interested in donating a minimum of $25 towards a gift card to participate, and anyone that shops at any of the participating businesses throughout the contest and spends a minimum of $25 will have their name entered to win the gift cards that are valued at over $600,” Jaimie Malmgren, PSCC Executive Director, explained.

A total of 24 local businesses will be participating in the contest. All participating businesses are listed on the poster below.

Stop in at any of the participating businesses to enter to win over $600 in gift cards. In the end, one winner will be chosen and will be awarded with a variety of gift cards from stores that offer home décor items, clothing, esthetics, pet items, pharmacy and much more.

“Our local businesses not only employ local people, but they also contribute to a lot of different organizations throughout the region. They are really the lifeline to how strong and vibrant our communities are and it is really important to support our local businesses.

Through this initiative, we hope that people will be able to learn about the wide variety of options that are available within the region,” Malmgren added.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and water valves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

-Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

-Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

-Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks- Crews apply a mixture of salt and sand on our streets and intersections to ensure safer driving conditions. If you are near or behind the sanding truck you are reminded to stay back 15m to allow the truck to disperse materials and to prevent materials from potentially hitting your vehicle.

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Keeping Hydrants Clear of Snow

With the recent snowfall, the City of Martensville and the Martensville Fire Department would like to ask residents for their assistance with keeping the fire hydrants clear of snow, parked vehicles, and other obstructions. Clearing snow from the hydrant helps keep hydrants visible and easily assessable which will save valuable time in the case of an emergency. Property Owners may be subject to fines for burying or obstructing hydrants.

The NHL All-Star festivities came to a close on Saturday after the final 20-minute 3-on-3 game wrapped up but we are going to take it back to when St. Louis Blues Alumni, The Great One, Wayne Gretzky opened the All-Star Skills Competition in St. Louis and the place went absolutely bananas.

The first event in the Skills was the Fastest Skater which most people had their money on Connor McDavid as he was the reigning champ. He went last in the competition and put up a better time than last season at 13.215 seconds which is just insane. However, it wasn’t enough to beat New York Islanders young star Mathew Barzal who put up a time of 13.175 seconds which is just three thousandths of a second away from Dylan Larkin’s NHL record of 13.172 back in 2016.

Next up was the Save Streak where goalies faced shooters from their opposing Division and saw who could stop the most pucks in a row. The fans would once again go nuts as their own goalie Jordan Binnington of the Blues stopped 10-in-a-row to claim the victory. In the Accuracy Shooting Challenge there was a bit of controversy as the old clip-on targets were replaced with an electronic screen that the players had to shoot at and seemed to maybe miss a few of the shots. It was probably the most unexpected win of the night as Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jacob Slavin knocked out all the targets in just 9.505 seconds, beating snipers such as Leon Draisaitl and Mark Scheifele.

The first ever Women’s Elite 3-on-3 game was up next and it was a classic between Canada and the United States with Canada coming out on top 2-1. Following that was the Hardest Shot competition which was predictably won by Shea Weber of the Montreal Canadians with a shot that clocked 106.5 mph.

In the final event on Friday, Patrick Kane embraced the boo’s from the St. Louis fans and beat Mitch Marner in a tie-breaker to become the first winner of the Shooting Stars competition with 24 points.

On Saturday it was time for the All-Star Game. The Metropolitan Division faced off with the Atlantic in game one and fell by a score of 9-5. In game two the Pacific doubled up the Central 10-5 and in the third and final game the Pacific would beat the Atlantic 6-5. Boston Bruins forward (and Team Atlantic Captain) David Pastrnak was named All-Star MVP after putting up six points (4 goals, 2 assists) in the tournament.

Martensville Hosts First Ever Pickleball Tournament Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville hosted its first ever Pickleball tournament at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP) on Saturday, January 25th. The tournament kicked off at 9am, and players of all skills and abilities were invited to participate.

Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

Levels of play for the tournament included Beginner, Intermediate 20015SS1 and Advanced. All teams that participated were guaranteed three games. A total of 34 teams participated, and prizes were awarded to the top teams in the tournament.

“Our first pickleball tournament was a great success.

When I first decided to run the tournament, I had no idea how much I would learn about this exciting sport and the wide variety of players that we would attract. Despite a few issues, with the encouragement and advice from players around Saskatchewan, we had a wonderful tournament.

A big thank you to everyone who came and participated, and congratulations to each team who won their division,” Jessica Loran, Martensville Program Coordinator II, said.

SPORTS Peewee Marauders Set New Tournament Records Submitted

tournament in a row they faced the West Central Wheat Kings in the final. It was a tight game, but West Central came out on top 3-2.

The team had a great weekend and were able to set some new tournament records such as a new record for most goals scored with 50 in total. Kazden Mathies shattered the all-time scoring record with 30 points in six games. Corban Almen was the tournament MVP. Martensville also had four players make the all-star team: Kazden Mathies, Corban Almen, Corben Schnurr and Kaden Shumay.

The Martensville Peewee AA Marauders brought home the silver medal from the prestigious 32 team 28th annual Regina Pats PW Classic tournament this past weekend. They finished pool play with a 3-0 record and advanced to the A side playoffs.

In their first playoff game they took on Winnipeg East Railcats White and came away with a 6-0 victory. They faced the Langley Eagles in the semi-final. It was a tight battle until the third period where they scored six unanswered goals and they breezed to a 10-3 win. For the second

There they took on the Moose JawMessenger Novice B Mavericks Purple and ended regulation time with a three all tie. Going into a shootout, the Marlies were able to come ahead and win the tournament.

“This was especially exciting for us because the tournament was un-tiered, which meant that they beat teams who play in the Novice B Division. It was an extremely exciting weekend and we are super proud of our girls,” Jody Coller, Team Manager, said.

Martensville Care Home Hosts Open House Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

An open house was held on Sunday, January 26th for the newest addition to the community; the Martensville Care Home. This is the first of its kind in Martensville, and owner/operator Alisa Borowsky, is looking forward to being able to provide a new level of care for the area.

As a local resident, Borowsky saw that there was a need for a care home in the area and after seeing her aunt who was in need of a place, struggle to find available beds, she decided to take the next step. Currently finishing her Continuing Care Assistant designation, which will be completed this year, Borowsky began the steps towards opening the Martensville Care Home in January of 2019.

The location at 6-1st Avenue North was purchased in July of 2019, with construction beginning in August.

The finished home has a beautiful, comfortable feeling to it and can house up to 14 people. “We are really proud of this place and we wanted it to have a cozy feeling to it because it is a home where people will be living and they will have their family visiting them. This is something that seems lost on the #wexit crowd … and perhaps a few other enablers who are contributing to the climate of upheaval by griping rather than providing solutions. This does not mean Westerners; especially, those in areas that are underrepresented like rural Saskatchewan; don’t have legitimate concerns.

It can certainly be argued we need to do more in Saskatchewan and Alberta to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and it can be argued that conservative-minded governments have been obstreperous in this regard for reasons that have to do with politics.

Moreover, it can surely be argued the federal Liberal government has demonstrated it does not grasp rural and western concerns regarding why we need to burn fossil fuels to simply exist in the sparse, cold place we call home.

Simply applying a tax on gasoline and other fossil fuels has not been an answer.

The problem, however, is that going back and forth in this debate with neither side giving so much as an inch has gotten us next to nowhere.

What far too often happens is people get set in their ways and simply rule out the possibility of exploring anything else; regardless of how reasonable it might be. This is the criticism that’s rightly been levelled by the west when it comes to the reluctance of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to consider alternatives to the carbon tax, but maybe if we all kept an open mind, we wouldn’t spend so much time spinning our wheels.

For example, one of the things emerging from the West’s frustrations is a push by Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s government for a “Fair Deal for Alberta.” And one of the arguably more practical things Kenney’s United Conservative Party government is exploring is the prospect of Alberta withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and starting up an Alberta Pension Plan.

It’s an idea that’s already been met with a lot of resistance. However, it’s caught the attention of former Saskatchewan Party premier Brad Wall, who recently openly wondered on Twitter whether its time to explore a “Buffalo Pension Plan” involving both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Perhaps Wall was being a bit politically cheeky.

Others offer the less kind assessment that the former politician of making political trouble or doing the bidding of the investment or oil communities that might stand to benefit from this, but instead of accusations maybe we should all ask: Is this feasible, workable and perhaps even a good idea?

Well, the Alberta government is sure making a case for. A study conducted by the Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo) and obtained by the Calgary Herald suggested: "By withdrawing from CPP, Albertans would see 'a substantial benefit' as their costs to contribute to a provincial plan would drop.'

That could include a "decrease to at least 7.21 per cent from the base levels in the current CPP of 9.9 per cent,” the report said. AIMCo manages more than $115 billion in assets from 31 pensions, endowments and government funds, so it’s not like they don’t know what they are talking about.

Here in Saskatchewan, we have TD Greystone that emerged from Regina-based Greystone Investment; a private pension management fund that got its start 30 years ago as the Investment Corp. of Saskatchewan that used to manage government pension funds.

Of course, there are problems and costs and, in the end, separate provincial funds may prove to be not that great an idea, but shouldn’t we at least consider some of the opportunities that might be emerging from this upheaval?

After all, hasn’t all this upheaval been over the need to consider change and news ideas?

A committee of education stakeholders, parents and business professionals will meet to begin developing recommendations on future development of curriculum and high school graduation requirements in Saskatchewan. The committee includes representatives from teachers, school divisions, parents, post-secondary institutions, chambers of commerce, the workforce, and the Ministry of Education.

It is important that we hear from parents, educators, post-secondary institutions and the business community about what students need to learn in the classroom in order to be successful. By keeping Saskatchewan’s curriculum up to date, we’re ensuring that our children will be well-equipped to succeed in their future.

Formerly known as Ceylon when it was a British colony, the name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972 when they were finally granted independence. In local Sinhalese, “lanka” means island and “sri” resplendent. After spending nearly a month there it seems a fairly fitting name. While sharing many cultural similarities with India, its much smaller size makes exploration a far simpler task. Bus and tuk-tuk transportation are ludicrously cheap (i.e. $2 for a 5-hour trip into th highlands), plenty of basic but comfortable beach accommodation can be found in the $10 to $50 range, and food (particularly seafood and rice/curry) is also a terrific bargain. But Sri Lanka’s greatest draw is its diversity.

Beaches: Great beaches line the coast all the way around the country. Popular surf beaches such as Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna provide beautiful stretches of white sand, consistent waves for all levels of expertise, and are hopping with beach bars and seafood restaurants. What tiny Dalawella lacks in size it more than makes up for with stunning scenery and world-famous Instagram photo spots. For something with a local feel and quiet vibe, check out the surprisingly overlooked strands of Talalla and Dikwella. And for those craving a nostalgic reminder of their backpacker days in Thailand, Hiriketiya’s pretty little cove, thriving beginner surf scene, and comfortable sunset lounges are eerily reminiscent of Koh Pha Ngan in its early days.

Galle: If beaches aren’t your main focus, or if you just crave a few sand-free hours, a day trip to fascinating Galle should fit the bill perfectly. This medieval fortress majestically occupying a small peninsula has seen a crazy mix of conquerors and defenders throughout history, leading to an eclectic architectural mix featuring no less than six different religions within the tiny 10-block radius of its picturesque stone walls.

Highlands: No visit to Sri Lanka would be complete without a visit to its amazing highlands. With rolling green hills, fantastic hiking, and many accessible viewpoints overlooking stunning valleys, expansive plains, and the Indian Ocean, Ella and Haputale are the places to go for a break from the heat. Even the greater likelihood of rain is somewhat offset by the resulting incredible waterfalls. Ella boasts the famous Nine Arch Bridge (another Instagram sensation), Little Adam’s Peak, and Ella Rock, as well as many opportunities to join the locals using the train tracks as a major thoroughfare. Meanwhile, strolling through the lush tea plantations around Haputale was possibly our favourite Sri Lankan experience.

Historic Centre: Every visitor should experience the wonderful train between Ella and historic Kandy, often described as one of the most scenic journeys in the world (as long as you don’t spend much time in the “bathroom”). Former capital Kandy is built around a pleasant lake, is the proud home of one of the world’s largest Buddhas, and has an entire temple dedicated to the alleged tooth of the great enlightened one SASKATCHEWAN himself. Further north, Lion Rock at Sigiriya is an absolute must-see, an unbelievable ruined fortress/ palace balanced precariously atop a massive rock outcropping. We still can’t agree whether the views were better from the top, the entrance, or the comparably impressive Pidurangala hill nearby.

Sri Lanka may be relatively small, but there is a LOT to see. Whether you are intrigued by their unique culture and enthralling history or simply looking for cheap beer and seafood on the beach, the Resplendent Island has you covered.

The Easter Sunday church bombings in 2019 dealt an enormous blow to Sri Lankan tourism, with visitors only starting to trickle back when we visited six months later. However, by all accounts, there is no reason for concern now, and it would be a monumental shame to miss out on this amazing destination.
