City of Martensville Looks Forward to Third Year of Participating in Senior Globe Walk Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Each year, the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA) hosts a Globe Walk adventure where adults ages 50+ can participate and challenge themselves to be more active during the winter months. This year marks the third year that the City of Martensville will be offering local residents a chance to join the local team at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP). “The goal is to get older adults more active and to challenge each other,” Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator, said.

A new theme is created annually, with this year’s being ‘Walk the Wonders of the World’, which will run from January to April 30th.

Those interested in participating in the Globe Walk can register at the MAP for free. When registering they will be required to provide their name, age, address, email and phone number. From there, they keep track of all activity they do whether it be walking, vacuuming at home, shoveling the driveway and more. At the end of each month, they turn in their totals and it gets calculated into how many kilometers they contributed. A total of 1300 steps counts as 1 kilometer, and for those who prefer activities that cannot be measured in steps or distance, you can log 2 kilometers for every 30 minutes of physical activity. SCOA encourages the use of fitness tracking devices, pedometers or cell phone apps to help keep track of your efforts as well as motivate you to reach your goals.

In January, the Globe Walk will begin in Saskatoon, with their first goal to reach the Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza, located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, which is 5577 kms away. “Every team submits their kilometers to SCOA and the goal is that together, we can walk all of the Wonders of the World, which would be a total of 56677 kilometers,” Reddekopp explained. “Our goal, as a team is to walk at least one of the Wonders of the World.”

In 2017, a total of 70 older adults participated in Martensville and in 2018 that number grew to over 100. Reddekopp hopes that this year, they will see an even larger number of people join. “We are really excited to be involved again this year and hope that we can increase our numbers and check out some Wonders of the World!”

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and water valves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

-Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

-Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

-Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks- Crews apply a mixture of salt and sand on our streets and intersections to ensure safer driving conditions. If you are near or behind the sanding truck you are reminded to stay back 15m to allow the truck to disperse materials and to prevent materials from potentially hitting your vehicle.

Our crews strive to delivery excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are several things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach, allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean up fallen fruit • Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours.

Service Dogs in Training at Paws Republic Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Both Kristine O’Brien and Becky Preiner of Paws Republic Boarding, Training & Grooming Centre in Martensville are no strangers to dogs of all breeds. The two women have trained a wide variety of dogs over the years and have recently begun a new adventure in training two Blue Heeler puppies to be service dogs. Lux and Leo were donated to Paws Republic from a breeder that had another set of puppies on the way, and wanted to find a new home for the two males. Typically, Paws Republic does not bring in their own dogs to train from the ground up as service dogs; however, because Blue Heelers are not typically used as service dogs, they were excited for the unique experience.

Lux, who has a big personality, is currently living with Preiner, while Leo, who is a little shyer, is currently staying at Paws Republic in order to spend time socializing with other dogs and with people.

The training process for service dogs at Paws Republic is a minimum of two years. “The first year is making sure they are a respectable member of society. We work on obedience, confidence, manners, basically the things that everyone should be teaching their dogs within the first year. After that we start working on specialized tasks,” Preiner explained. After the first year, the work begins on training the dog’s specific tasks. “We specialize in psychiatric service ABOVE: Leo (LEFT) and Lux (RIGHT) are currently being trained to be service dogs at Paws Republic. work, so dogs for anxiety, depression, autism and things like that. Dogs are (Prairie Pulse Photography) taught tasks that can help to benefit their owner’s specific needs,” Preiner added.

At the age of two, dogs are tested to ensure they do not have issues with the elbows and hips so their bodies are able to hold up for the work. “You can’t get specific tests done until they have matured to that two years point and for us; it is about advocating for the dog. It is part of the standards that we have set for ourselves when it comes to service dog training,” said O’Brien.

In Saskatchewan, there is not a service dog registry, and specialized certification is not required.

In order to be approved for a service dog, you must have a letter of recommendation from a medical professional, and the dog must be able to perform three tasks. “Whether the owner trains the tasks, or we train the tasks, it doesn’t matter, but we like to provide the service to help people because we have set a standard for our service dog training. We have goals and requirements that we meet, so that when we are working with individuals, that we are comfortable in stating that it is in fact a service dog,” Preiner said.

All of the training for Lux and Leo will be done through Paws Republic, and the plan is that after a year of training, they will look to find a home for the two dogs and continue training while working together with the owners to ensure that each dog can meet the needs of the family.

When it comes to someone requiring a service dog, O’Brien explained that it is hard to put a price on it. Each situation varies as to how involved each client wants the trainers at Paws Republic to be involved. “The first step is to get the letter from a medical professional. From there, we like to sit down and chat about what people can expect such as; medical needs of a service dog, type of dog, talking to your workplace, school and family members about it and things like that. We walk them through the ins and outs of owning a service dog and then discuss what level they want to be involved with in the training,” O’Brien explained.

Both O’Brien and Preiner are grateful for the support that they have received from the community.

Businesses such as Co-op, Canalta Hotel, Adobe Inn and Canadian Tire have provided an opportunity for the service dogs in training to have a chance to work /MO* within a public setting. Additionally, Horizon Dog Food has stepped up to sponsor Lux’s food, offering one free bag a month.

Government Of Saskatchewan Reminds The Public To Pass Snowplows Safely Be Aware, Pass with Care

Each winter, snowplows in Saskatchewan are involved in collisions with drivers. However, the majority of these collisions can be avoided by being aware and passing with care.

“Our snowplow operators are out working, often in poor weather, to provide safe roads for travellers in Saskatchewan,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “At times, our snowplows encounter others on the road that are travelling at speeds or passing in ways that make working conditions risky. We simply ask: be aware, pass with care.”

In recent years, the Government of Saskatchewan implemented clear laws to improve snowplow safety, which allows drivers to pass a moving snowplow when safe. Like any other emergency vehicle or tow truck, travellers must slow to 60 kilometres per hour when passing any highway equipment when warning lights are operating.

Snowplow operator Wendy Koslowski was involved in a serious collision in January of 2019. She was forced off work for several months and the recovery continues. The incident has impacted Wendy and her family.

“It snowed and I was hit from behind and when the car hit me - I hit the brakes and it came back on me,” Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure Snowplow Operator Wendy Koslowski said. “I was hurt pretty good. I was unable to pick up my daughter because of my shoulder.”

Provincial snow plows have flashing amber and blue lights. They use their blue lights when plowing, salting or sanding to increase visibility.

Drivers can help keep roads safe this winter by: slowing to 60 kilometres per hour when highway equipment or other emergency vehicles are stopped with warning lights in operation; staying back and staying safe since snowplows can create mini-blizzards known as the “Snow Zone”; allowing snowplows sufficient time and space since they will pull over about every 10 kilometres or when safe to do so; driving according to weather and road conditions; passing only when safe to do so; and planning ahead by using the Highway Hotline at www. saskatchewan.ca/highwayhotline or calling 511.

“Drive smart because it’s not a race,” Koslowski said. “Drive safe.” Highways are inspected regularly by plow operators to determine if plowing, salt or sand is required for the ice conditions as well as to report conditions to the provincial road information system, the Highway Hotline.

Saying Goodbye to 2019 With a Warm Welcome to 2020 Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

As we start another year, with many of us making New Year’s resolutions to work towards self-improvement, Jocelyn and myself would like to take a moment to express our appreciation to all of our readers and loyal advertisers.

Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to continue doing what we love. We are honoured to be a part of this community and have met so many wonderful people throughout the years.

For me personally, 2019 was a bit of a trying year and I am sure that I am not alone in that. Many of us experienced heartache, financial struggles, the loss of loved ones, health issues and much more. I used to try to kick off the year with some of the standard resolutions such as to quit smoking, or work out more, eat better, etc.; however, this year, I have decided to avoid making a resolution that I will only likely keep for a month or so and then have it slowly fade out. Instead, I choose to embrace life. I choose to take inventory of all of the great people that I have in my life already and instead of looking at things and wishing that they were different, or easier, I choose to appreciate what I do have.

There are certain times in our lives where it almost seems as if we are being tested. That no matter what we say or do; nothing seems to work out. It is easy to feel defeated during these times, and to question what you may have done to deserve such a struggle. I know I have moments like this and it is because of all the good things in my life, that I can instead refocus myself and look at the positives.

Those that know me are aware of how difficult this past year was, but they also know that I worked really hard to ensure that it didn’t break me. Self-improvement of any kind is not easy and nor should it be easy. Anything that is worth it in this world should not be easy. The hard work is what makes it so valuable in the end. How can we even begin to appreciate what we have in our lives if it is handed to us and we do not need to work for it; whether that be material items, relationships, friendships or just working on being a better person. That desire to keep pushing, to set goals and put the work in to accomplish them is what makes reaching our destination so valuable.

For Jocelyn, the year 2019 had several ups and downs. The absolute biggest highlight of her year was the marriage of her daughter Shelby, which took place this past July. Saying that the planning of this wedding kept Jocelyn’s mind occupied would be a huge understatement and in the end, all of the hard work that everyone put in was absolutely worth it as the wedding was perfect and Shelby was the most beautiful bride. This was one of those moments that made Jocelyn take a step back and truly appreciate the most important thing in her life – family. Not to say that she isn’t appreciative every single day, but the sense of pride that came over her as she watched her only daughter say “I Do” to the love of her life was one of the best moments.

The year 2020 will be an exciting one for the Martensville Messenger as we have several changes coming our way.

Since Jocelyn and I took over the Messenger in 2014, there have already been some major modifications in how we deliver the news to the community. Initially, we provided home delivery to all residents in the community; however, based on the results of a Readership Survey that was done in 2017, we decided to put more focus into our online options. This has proven to be a popular move, as we see an increase in our digital subscribers each week.

For this year, we will be moving back into a home based business as of February 1st. This was not an easy decision for us, but in the end, it is the best option. We will still be out and about in the community and nothing will change in how things at the Messenger operate. Instead, we will now have more of an opportunity to be current and efficient with getting information out to the community.

Jocelyn and I truly wish you all the best in 2020 and hope that the year brings you much joy and happiness. Thank you once again for your continued support.

Be Informed As Cannabis Edibles, Extracts And Topicals Become Available

Cannabis edibles, extracts and topicals may soon be available for purchase, under federal and provincial cannabis laws. With these products becoming available, there are important points consumers should keep in mind regarding the retail and consumption of cannabis.

Some other things to keep in mind if you choose to consume cannabis products: • In Saskatchewan, the minimum age for buying and consuming all forms of cannabis, including edibles, is 19 years of age.

• All cannabis products, including edibles that may look like candy, baked goods or other food items, should be stored in a place that cannot be reached by children or pets.

• Possession of any amount of non-medical cannabis by a minor is prohibited.

• Licensed retailers are required to follow specific health and safety guidelines regarding the products they sell. Unsure if you’re buying from a legal source? The list of licensed retailers in Saskatchewan (stores and online) can be found on SLGA’s website at https:// www.slga.com/permits-and-licences/cannabis-permits/cannabis-retailing/cannabisretailers-in-saskatchewan.

• Edible cannabis may take hours longer to take effect than smoking cannabis. The effects of edibles are also generally more intense and last longer than the effects of inhaling cannabis.

• Consuming any form of non-medical cannabis in public spaces is prohibited. Individuals can only carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or equivalent in public.

• Possessing, consuming or distributing any form of cannabis in a vehicle could result in a $300 fine. Cannabis can only be transported from one lawful place (store, home) to another lawful place (home, another’s home). This is consistent with the rules already in place for alcohol and vehicles.

• There is zero tolerance for all drug-impaired driving in Saskatchewan.

• Penalties for driving under the influence of cannabis may include immediate license suspension, vehicle seizure for up to 60 days, and license suspension for up to five years upon conviction of drug-impaired driving. These laws apply to everyone, including medicinal users of cannabis.

• Penalties in place for provincial cannabis offences range from $200 to $2,250. In more serious instances, individuals could be charged with a provincial offence and face fines ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 and imprisonment of up to six months.

For people who love to travel, nothing beats the freedom and excitement of a thrilling trip to some exotic location trying new things, seeing cool stuff, eating weird stuff. But these trips don’t just happen. They require planning and preparation if you are going to make the most of your time and money. “Winging it” can be an admirable idea but, in our experience, it usually just leads to too much time figuring out logistics, seeking recommendations, overpaying for hotel rooms and waiting at the wrong bus stops. Here is a list of things you can accomplish before leaving home that will help your trip go as smoothly as possible, meaning less time spent dealing with problems and more time taking ill-advised selfies in front of naked statues.

Planning Tips 1.

Research your transportation. Don’t wait until you’re hauling your bag off the carousel before trying to figure out how to get into the city or find your hotel. In case you hadn’t heard, there is a fair bit of info on the internet these days. Make use of it.

2.

Order some local currency. Yes, these days there are many places where you can get by almost exclusively with just a credit card (Visa works best), and if you have a Plus (also the better choice) or Cirrus bank card you should be able to get money from ATMs all over the world.

But they don’t always work quite the way you’d like, especially in developing countries, so it is comforting to have a little cash in your pocket when you arrive to at least get you to your first stop.

3.

Buy travel insurance. No one said this planning stuff had to be fun. But if something every happens to you in a foreign country, knowing you at least have things covered financially is a huge step. Verifying the cleanliness of that Bolivian doctor’s faded rubber gloves is still on you, though.

4.

Unlock your phone. Everywhere we go these days we buy a local SIM card so we can use our phone normally. Unlike the extortionate prices in Canada, this is usually surprisingly affordable (i.e. $C30 for 5 GB of data and unlimited calling and texting for a month anywhere in the EU). Besides always having access to the internet when you need to figure something out, it can also be extremely handy to be able to call your AirBnB host or the airline. On very short trips, however, it might be just as easy to activate your international roaming and pay the fees.

5.

Download offline maps. Even if you expect to have data on your phone during your trip it is wise to save maps ahead. That will allow you to navigate with or without a signal or data. On Google Maps, just click on the menu symbol, choose Offline Maps, then set the area to download.

Most last for at least a month.

6.

Save the location of your hotels and interesting sights. Having all key locations starred in your map makes it quick and easy to find directions while on the go.

7.

Download and update your apps. Think about all the apps you expect to use (Google Maps, Trip Advisor, Accuweather, Chrome, AirBnB, Booking, etc.) and make sure they are up to date while you still have a reliable internet connection. Also, make sure you have the latest version from any airlines you’ll be flying as you often need the app to access the online entertainment and other features.

8.

Pack essentials in your carry-on. Assuming you are checking baggage you should separate your belongings so that all liquids go into cabin baggage and anything you’d rather not live without goes on the plane with you. It always sucks when your bag ends up having different travel plans than you, but at least if you have all the least replaceable items with you (i.e. lip balm, memory stick with The Office re-runs) it won’t feel like quite the disaster it otherwise might.

9.

Backup your phone and/or laptop. Unless you are one of those people who regularly drop expensive electronic devices in the toilet, travelling abroad is the time you are most likely to lose something. While you’re at it, you should clear your cache and passwords and make sure your Find My Phone app is activated.

The most successful trips actually start well before the plane leaves the runway. Putting in a little work before you go can help you spend more time enjoying yourself and less working through annoying inconveniences.
