Civic Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic - What You Should Know!

City Hall is Open, however with some guidelines currently in place. Continue to utilize online and contactless options when possible. Snow Removal – Safety Reminders

The Snow removal program aims to reduce hazards in the community, ensure roadways for emergency vehicles, and provide access for to goods and services in the community.

-Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

-Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks and Snow Removal Equipment- Sanding and Snow Removal Equipment make frequent stops or may change direction at any time. If you are near or behind the sanding truck or snow removal equipment you are reminded to stay back 15m to ensure heavy machinery can safely operate and sanders can spread materials in intersections without risk to your vehicle.

-Snow Dump Area is Restricted- The snow dump area located along 10th Avenue S, is a restricted area for city crews and contractors to dump and pile snow. This is not a recreational area and we ask that the public remain out of these areas due to potential hazards.

City of Martensville Looks to Have Pumptrack Construction Completed by Summer Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville is quickly moving plans along for the new addition of a pump track, which will be located east of the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark, within the community this year.

For those that are not familiar with what a pump track is – you are not alone. As Martensville’s Director of Recreation & Community Services stated, “pump tracks are a relatively new ABOVE: Once complete, users will be able to utilize bikes, phenomenon.” boards, scooters, blades and more on the pumptrack.

The City of Martensville (Velosolutions) will be working with Progressive Bike Ramps, Canadian Ramp Company, and Velosolutions on this project.

According to Velosolutions, who will be doing the conceptual design – a pumptrack is a course containing hills and berms that are ridden by “pumping” with your arms and legs to propel yourself forward rather than pedaling or pushing. They also note that a typical pumptrack is made of dirt which requires a lot of maintenance and grooming year-round, but the asphalt pumptrack allows for not only good riding conditions rain or shine, but good for all wheels as well.

Once completed the pumptrack will be open to those utilizing bikes, scooters, boards, blades and basically anything else along these lines that has wheels.

Initially, the plan was to construct the pumptrack south of the skatepark; however, after careful consideration, the City decided to move their plan to the east in order to create a larger scale pumptrack with more options. This location will allow for integrated connections between the skatepark and pumptrack as well.

On February 4th, the public will be invited to attend a virtual meeting where Velosolutions will present a potential pump track for the community. “Anyone interested will have access to the meeting where Velosolutions will explain what a pumptrack is, what it can be used for and get information out regarding the design process,” Schaeffer explained.

Following this meeting, a website will go live which will allow people to input their thoughts about what they would like to see included within the pumptrack, such as ramps, corners, etc. “By doing this, it provides users with an opportunity to basically design their own pumptrack. It is all submitted online and then based on that input, a design will be made based on what people want to see on it. It is being built for the community, so we want to know what they want,” Schaeffer said.

The website will be active from February 4-18, allowing a two-week period where people can give their input. After that, a design will be compiled and presented to the public for feedback. Once approved, the City will move forward tendering for construction.

“We are doing it now because we would like to have the final design in early March, so it can be tendered out and have construction begin in the spring. The hope is with spring construction, we will have it ready for community use for the summer.”

A Guide to Post Secondary Education MHC adds Agroecology to program mix Written by the Medicine Hat College

An exciting new program has been added to Medicine Hat College’s academic offering, giving students interested in sustainable agriculture an opportunity to become a registered technologist in Agrology (RTAg), while staying close to home in the southern Prairies.

The two year Agroecology Technician diploma program provides students with the competencies required for producing food, forage, fiber, and fuel using sustainable methods, as well as a range of knowledge in the three E’s: environment, economics, and energy using systems theory.

Learners will engage in experiential learning opportunities to gain real-world experience in designing, monitoring and assessing sustainable agroecological systems, meeting the knowledge, technical skills, and performance competencies required for certification with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists.

“Medicine Hat College is excited to bring this opportunity to learners in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan as the program is well-aligned and serves the needs of our region and communities in terms of offering new streams of employment and alternative ways of doing agriculture,” explains the program’s coordinator, Brent Smith.

This program uniquely teaches a systemsthinking approach to sustainable agriculture and will equip learners with the knowledge and skills required for protecting and conserving natural ecosystems, as well as maximizing production systems that mimic natural systems such as perennial crops, diversity, rotations, limited/no till grazing, and many more.

“Agriculture is one of southern Alberta’s leading industries, and there is always going to be resources and demand for agriculture because everyone needs to eat,” adds Smith. “This program leverages an important part of our region’s economic sector and prepares students to find meaningful, long-term employment and a future income stream that’s not going to be subject to market forces.”

Employment opportunities that stem from the completion of the Agroecology Technician diploma include agricultural research technician, urban agriculture designer or landscaper, range management consultant or professional, and an environmental consultant.

Graduates will also be equipped with the entrepreneurial knowledge needed to start a business in sustainable agriculture or greenhouse horticulture, or support the takeover of a family agriculture business as a crop or livestock producer.

“An exciting aspect to this program is the innovative and creative opportunities in diversifying current practices and products that will emerge. Students will taught about free food production design systems, low input parks and community spaces, and droughtproofing and water harvesting that all have a profoundly positive impact on the future of our communities and our environment.

“Additionally, there are all kinds of agricultural products that our region is well-suited to produce that we are currently not taking advantage of, and this program can be influential in creating new industry and bringing subsequent jobs in our region,” remarks Smith.

Upon completion of the diploma, the opportunity further exists for students to transfer to universities offering sustainable agriculture programs.

Applications are now open for this program, with the first intake of students to begin their studies in Fall 2021.

Team effort enhances student experience

Sask Polytech Simulation Centre teams up with Addictions Counselling to give students real world experience.

Written by Saskatchewan Polytechnic Ask alumni about their time at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and they’ll probably have a story about one special class. For current students in the Addictions Counselling diploma program, that one class may very well be COUN 155-Addictions Counselling Practice.

“Individual counselling is the cornerstone of an addiction counsellor’s work, and Addictions Counselling Practice gives students the skills they will need in the workplace,” says instructor Joy Friesen. “It’s a lab class where students practice the counselling model with each other, but we thought providing them with simulated clients would be an outstanding experience.”

Simulated clients? Friesen is referring to actors hired by Sask Polytech’s Simulation Centre to portray different clients. Each client had a different presenting problem, level of motivation and way of sharing their story.

“It’s difficult to simulate the dynamic that happens in real life between a client and a counsellor. When students are practicing with their peers or instructors, there’s a degree of comfort because you know it’s not a real client,” Friesen says.

Using live actors to simulate the client-counsellor interaction was designed to give students an opportunity to work through the first stage of the counselling model, while at the same time adapting each client’s defense mechanisms, types of storytelling and process of building rapport.

Students also practiced building cultural safety and being culturally responsive with clients.

COVID-19 prevented students’ from having faceto-face interactions, so Benn Hart and Wendy Wilson, both simulation technicians at Sask Polytech, stepped up to help develop an experience that was as real as possible.

“With COVID, Sask Polytech had to move a lot of things to virtual platforms very quickly, so it’s been really busy in the Simulation Centre,” Hart says. “What we do often looks easy, but there’s a lot we have to do in the background to make it happen.”

The first step was meeting with Friesen to discuss her goals. “This was our first time working with the Addictions Counselling program, so we had a Zoom meeting with Joy to get a clear understanding of what she was looking for,” says Wilson. “We hired actors to fit her scenarios and brought them to our simulation centre in Saskatoon, where we could ensure contact and social distancing guidelines were followed. We worked with the actors on their roles and set up the rooms.”

Friesen met with the actors to brief them on the counselling model and the goals of the clinical lab.

“I also encouraged them to ad lib. I wanted our students to learn to trust themselves, because a counsellor never knows what a client will say or how they will act,” she says.

The simulation rooms were equipped with cameras and the necessary technology to allow remote log in to the virtual counselling sessions.

Wilson and Hart provided onsite technical support, while Friesen and her students logged in from their homes.

followed by feedback from observing students and the actor. Friesen was able to view each session as it happened.

Based on student feedback, the virtual counselling sessions were a big success. “Our students loved having this opportunity,” Friesen says. “They say it really helped them understand the importance of staying grounded, of building the therapeutic alliance and of meeting the client where they are at.

The whole simulation experience was rich in learning and really built their confidence.”

Healthy Campus Saskatchewan Supports The Mental Health And Wellbeing Of Post-Secondary Students 21015bb0

The Government of Saskatchewan, in partnership with post-secondary education partners across the province, launched a collaborative initiative today to support student health and wellbeing.

Healthy Campus Saskatchewan brings 19 post-secondary institutions together to provide students with the knowledge, tools and support resources they need to achieve their personal and academic goals.

“Saskatchewan’s post-secondary institutions have made a clear commitment to addressing student mental health and wellness,” Advanced Education Minister Gene Makowsky said. “By working together, we can achieve better outcomes for our students, and for our province.”

“This initiative will lay the groundwork that will help us provide the best support possible to our post-secondary students,” Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health Minister Everett Hindley said. “It is especially appropriate this year, in light of the additional mental wellness challenges faced by our students in adjusting to the pandemic while they continue their education.”

In 2020-21, the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Ministry of Health are providing combined funding of $130,000 to help support this work.

The main areas of focus for Healthy Campus Saskatchewan include mental health, suicide awareness and prevention, sexual violence prevention, substance use, pandemic responses, and inclusive environments.

“The key benefit of this partnership is the ability to share resources, information and ideas,” Healthy Campus Saskatchewan spokesperson Bev Drew said. “Healthy Campus Saskatchewan will work to advance the conversation around student health and wellbeing to help us be more proactive in addressing the evolving needs of students in the province.”

As part of the Healthy Campus Saskatchewan launch, a Launch and Learn event, Better Together: A New Era for Post-Secondary Health and Wellbeing in Saskatchewan, is being hosted today, followed by additional activities this week.

Creative passion becomes profession Written by the Medicine Hat College

From small town Saskatchewan to beautiful British Columbia, education at Medicine Hat College (MHC) helped pave the way to a career of joy and fulfillment for Myron Campbell.

Campbell is a thriving artist and a professor in the division of Visual Arts at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO). His creative journey began in the Visual Communications diploma program at MHC, which has since become Bachelor of Applied Arts – Art and Design.

“Medicine Hat College is a little gem. I first heard about the institution from my junior high art teacher and after high school, I went to the city to visit a friend who was taking the program. I absolutely loved it there,” remarks Campbell.

“Medicine Hat was the perfect size and not too big which was desirable to me having grown up in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The facility had high end equipment and 24 hour access - both were unprecedented at the time. The program was well rounded in that I could pursue my own personal art, as well as client-based work at the same time.

I knew it was the perfect fit for me.”

Campbell acknowledges the program as being influential in shaping him into the artist he is today, crediting the vast array of modalities, skills, and techniques he was exposed to during his time at the college.

“MHC’s program is unique in that it offers a real balance of both fine arts training and design training. It’s pretty rare to get that balance in a program, and the college does a great job of it,” explains Campbell.

“It’s an ideal academic pathway for someone like me who can’t decide what type of artist I am on any given day. I was introduced to every medium possible and then built up my practice to what suited me. I received a real broad training which was so awesome.” Campbell praises a professor he had at MHC as a huge inspiration and driving force behind where he is today, a role he strives to fill for the students he now teaches.

“Teaching creative studies is where I belong. My passion for art and creativity has lead me to a place where I’m forever being fulfilled, inspired, and growing as an artist, designer and practitioner.”

Moe Must Go Beyond Tough Talk

Premier Scott Moe has been talking tough with COVID-19. Some of this tough talk was necessary. But other times, it was little more than talk that will not change much at all.

Where Moe’s tough talk was most necessary and welcomed was his talk about getting tough with individuals and businesses defying the COVID-19 rules the rest of us are. Moe has also talked about how the virus spread might be slowing in Saskatchewan, but the kindest thing one might say about such talk is that it is way too early to know.

Saskatchewan was doing well in the COVID-19 fight in December until “a Christmas bump,” Moe said, adding that the numbers have started to level out. It is fair to say that the province is — at least as of the writing of this column — seeing somewhat steadier daily case counts of around 300 new cases a day.

However, Moe and his Saskatchewan government gloss over the reality that those numbers still translate into the newest cases per capita and most active cases per capita.

It’s also quite likely that January will see more COVID19-related deaths in Saskatchewan than any month. This follows a record number of Saskatchewan COVID-19related deaths.

Moe should instead, give us straight-forward talk on the entire situation so people will be more accepting of any tough measures that could be needed. It is also here where Moe’s tough talk of clamping down may be most appreciated.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference broadcast provincewide, Moe spoke passionately about getting calls and petitions from frustrated hockey parents over their kids not being able to play as grownups flout the COVID-19 rules by partying it up in bars.

Moe hit a strong note when he suggested that it is some adults who are acting like selfish and immature kids unwilling to take responsibility and that “harsher punishment” might be needed for such adults. Credit Moe for pulling no punches here.

Let’s hope his Saskatchewan Party government is more than talk. Moe is dead right that a few businesses unwilling to follow the rules might be the very reason why other businesses and individuals would be stuck with even tighter restrictions. But it’s all rather meaningless if it’s not followed up by actions.

As they say, talk is cheap and, right now, we aren’t exactly seeing this government put more money towards enforcement to ensure that people are following the rules. In fact, Moe didn’t even explain last week why his government won’t publicly name rule-breaking businesses in the same way it puts out news releases for small businesses that break occupational health and safety rules. Instead, the government seems to be relying on social media to do so.

Nevertheless, someone in the Premier’s chair threatening to get tough is sometimes all that’s needed to get people to fall in line. Maybe this is what’s needed to crack down on local rule breakers. That said, it’s unlikely that tough works with those who are far removed from this jurisdiction.

That would surely be the case of Moe’s tough talk — borrowed from Ontario Premier Doug Ford — about “sticking a firecracker up the ying yang of the chief executive officer of Pfizer to encourage him to get vaccines to this country and his province sooner. Maybe Moe’s frustration was sincere — even if it was just mimicking what Ford said. Clearly, Moe recognizes mass vaccination is key in this fight. It might even be what people really want to hear. But, really, what good does it do?

Pfizer is an international company with $59 billion in annual revenues — four times that of Saskatchewan. Do Moe or Ford think the president of Pfizer is going to be intimidated into getting drugs here fast? Sometimes tough talk is needed. Sometimes, it’s just talk.

The Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation (PSSF) and the Martensville & District Kinette Club have teamed up to help raise funds this winter. “2020 was a different and uncertain year for all of us and we are doing our best in 2021 to continue finding new ways to raise funds for the Foundation’s programs and innovative learning initiatives that benefit and support the students and teachers in the Prairie Spirit School Division,” PSSF Executive Director Kari Dean stated.

The creative new fundraising plan will be a special outdoor event taking place this February with the local Kinette Club, along with support from the City of Martensville. Money raised will go towards both the PSSF 2021 student learning initiatives and TeleMiracle 45 on behalf of the Kinettes.

From February 6-15, ‘Cupid’s Quest’ and ‘Unlock the Love’ will be taking place within the community. Cupid’s Quest will involve participants locating various Cupid’s Arrows throughout Martensville, with a total of 30 available to be found.

All signs will be located outdoors and available for everyone in the community, as well as the general public to find.

“The arrows/signage will contain fun facts and information like: did you know?, can you find?, have you seen?, etc. as they apply to learning more about the Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation, the Martensville & District Kinettes and the City of Martensville. We encourage everyone to join in on the outdoor fun,” Dean explained.

On February 15 from 10am-3pm, everyone can continue with ‘Cupid’s Quest’ in addition to participating in the ‘Unlock the Love’ event. There will be a number of pre-set locations each with a location coordinate. The Start/End station, which will be shared that day, will provide the first location coordinate for the event.

“At each of the locations, participants will ‘unlock’ another letter to eventually form a word.

Participants will use coordinates at each station to take them to the next ‘Unlock the Love’ location until the word is completed. They will then head back to the start/end station to collect a small prize; if they are one of the first 150 participants.”

Currently, the two organizations are looking for local businesses to come on board and help support this fun, family-friendly event with a $200 donation. Donations will be divided equally between the two organizations and supporters will receive a tax receipt. Those interested in getting involved are asked to contact psfoundation@spiritsd.ca by February 2nd.
