- Do not plow or pile snow on streets or hydrants – this can block access to manholes, water valves, and access to water in case of fire.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently as well as more clearly see driveways to avoid ridging.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

Help Keep The Area Around Your ‘Touchread Dial’ Clear This Winter…And Have A ‘Clear’ Water Bill Higher than normal snow fall this season has made the touchread dial, ‘black box’ or ‘pucks’ in some areas difficult to access for water meter readers. This slows down the reading schedule and leads to homes not being read. You can help us by keeping areas around the black boxes free of snow or obstacles so meter readers can quickly and easily take a read and move to the next property.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

- Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks - Crews apply a mixture of salt and sand on our streets and intersections to ensure safer driving conditions. If you are near or behind the sanding truck you are reminded to stay back 15m to allow the truck to disperse materials and to prevent materials from potentially hitting your vehicle.

Supporting TeleMiracle Since the 70’s Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Ray Kneeland is a familiar name and face to many residents within Martensville and the surrounding area. For years, Kneeland was the owner/operator of the OK Corral, located just north of Martensville. It was here that countless events were held to help raise money for TeleMiracle. Since the mid 70’s, Kneeland has raised approximately $460,000 for the annual fundraiser through a wide array of fundraisers such as trail rides, rodeos, gymkhanas, raffles and more.

Kneeland currently lives in Saskatoon and had an exciting visit with a familiar face last week. On January 13, Beverley Mahood made the trip to Saskatoon to sit down with Ray and talk about all of his years of contribution to TeleMiracle. Beverley brought a cameraman with her and the interview will be televised on this year’s TeleMiracle, which takes place March 5-6 in Regina. Kneeland’s interview will be shown on Sunday, March 6th around 1pm. Due to COVID, the format of TeleMiracle has changed, so instead of live, on-air presentations, previously recorded interviews will be aired.

For the past 25 years, Mahood has been a key part of TeleMiracle, and during that time, Kneeland and the country music singer/songwriter have formed a close friendship. “She is so down to earth and pleasant to visit with. I have told so many people that over the years and they have said the same thing just by watching her on stage with people. I had the chance to watch her perform at a fundraiser show years ago and it was priceless to watch her interact with the crowd while on stage,” Kneeland said.

It was actually Mahood that helped Kneeland with stage fright when he began making live presentations at TeleMiracle. “When I was younger I didn’t like public speaking because I had such an awful time getting up in front of people to talk. The first time she was on, as we walked on, she turned and said ‘Hello’, and just the way she said it, it mesmerized me and I totally forgot about that crowd. That’s come to help me over the years to learn how to handle talking in front of crowds. That’s just how she is,” Kneeland stated.

In all of the years that Kneeland has been raising money for TeleMiracle, the highest total brought in within one year was an incredible $47,000. Kneeland explained that his passion for the cause came after attending a mini TeleMiracle fundraiser in Martensville. Numerous people shared their stories of how their lives had been changed through TeleMiracle. “After hearing the stories, I just couldn’t resist the urge. There was something so worthwhile to it.”

Kneeland surprised even himself at how successful his fundraising efforts turned out to be, noting that when he was younger, he never thought very highly of himself. “I felt like an underdog as a kid and had that feeling that I wasn’t enough. My dad played a big role in things for me though. He was a dairy farmer and I stayed at home on the farm for 22 years. In those years, I never saw him get mad or run anyone down, so I never grew mean in that way or thinking bad about anything or anyone – except I had a poor opinion of myself. I sort of followed my dads lead and just went about the thinks I needed to do and did it. That’s how I was with TeleMiracle. I came up with ideas, people got on board and it all came together. It was dynamic.”

Although Kneeland was the driving force in the fundraising efforts over the years, he stated that without the help of others, he would not have been near as successful. Through fifteen years of hosting two high school rodeos a year, countless gymkhanas with dine and dances, week-long trail rides, silent auctions, fuel card raffles that raised $10,000 at times, selling chocolate almonds at Agribition in Regina each year and so many more events, Kneeland noted that none of it would have been possible without help from the people in his life supporting his passion for TeleMiracle.

“People used to ask me how I was able to pay for things around my place if I kept giving all of the money away to TeleMiracle, but what started happening was as we were having our events, we started getting people asking us to host weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions and even grad parties.

So the cash was coming in then. I was getting paid back,” Kneeland explained.

Additionally, Kneeland added that as he was making upgrades to the event venues at his place, he would have people donate time and material to help with the projects because they heard about the work he did to raise money for TeleMiracle.

Kneeland has seen the benefit that the TeleMiracle organization can have on people first-hand. Within the next month or two, Kneeland is anticipating another surgery to help get back to a more comfortable existence.

“That’s why TeleMiracle came to mean so much to me. They help the people in this province that really need the help, whether it is big or small.”

When asked about his favorite TeleMiracle memories over the years, Kneeland gave an answer that you can only expect to hear from a real cowboy. “Well shucks, I so enjoyed it all. I just had a real hayday with all of it.”

After sharing a photo of himself with Beverley Mahood that was taken during their January 13th visit, Kneeland was blown away with the likes and comments the picture received. “So many people had such wonderful things to say. It’s a good thing I don’t wear a cowboy hat anymore because I don’t think I would be able to get it on,” Kneeland joked.

People like Ray Kneeland are rare and we could all take a page out of his book to help do for others rather than ourselves. Kneeland has been an inspiration to many and through his hard work and dedication to TeleMiracle, he has made a difference in so many lives. It has been a busy season for the Maven Marlies. In late November, the girls attended a one-day jamboree in Holdfast, SK, where they went undefeated. Additionally, the team attended the Regina Female Challenge from December 10-12, where they were undefeated throughout round robin play, losing to the Saskatoon Comet Warriors in the ‘A’ final by a score of 3-1.

“The team set a goal early last week to take home their own tournament this past weekend. Each and every one of the girls stepped it up to a new level and played their butts off going undefeated in round robin play. They faced the same Saskatoon Comet Warrior team in the 'A' final of their home tournament for a chance at some redemption and rose to the challenge, giving their fans an exciting 'A' final matchup, capturing the Gold Medal Final defeating the Warriors by a score of 6-5,” proud mom Trish Wagner stated.

The next big item on the schedule for the team is the Moose Jaw Maverick Classic All Female Tournament, which will take place at the end of January, followed by the Warman Female Tournament in February. Dr. Nicoelle Wanner has been going to Medicine Hat College (MHC) for as long as she can remember.

She recalls following big footprints through the hallways when she attended early learning programs as a child, singing with the MHC Girls’ Choir as a teen, and studying in the cafeteria for high school finals. More recently, she goes to the college to work as one of the physicians in the campus medical clinic.

“Medicine Hat College has always been here for me,” says Wanner.

When the time came to start her post-secondary education, the decision was a no brainer.

“I could have moved away to another city or another university, but that was never really high on my priority list. I knew that I could get a very good education here with the added logical benefits of cost saving and smaller class sizes,” she explains.

“The college gave me the education and training I needed, in the environment that I needed during that time in my life. I never had to sacrifice anything by staying here.”

After completing two years of university transfer science courses, she went on to finish a Bachelor of Science at the University of Calgary. It was there she had her first real ‘a-ha’ moment about what made a MHC education so special.

“I was sitting in my first big lecture hall with four hundred students and thinking ‘Oh my God, what is happening?’ because that was not what I was used to. At MHC, you just had so much more one-on-one time with your instructors which improved the education for sure, but quite frankly it improved the fun.”

In addition to the solid education she received at MHC, she also had the opportunity to connect with people and develop relationships – skills that have served her well in her career.

Wanner finished her medical degree at the University of Alberta and returned to Medicine Hat for her residency. With strong roots in the community, she established her medical practice, started her family and began building the life she wanted to have. After 13 years, the busy mom of three closed her practice and moved to the MHC campus clinic, allowing her more time for family activities and non-clinical initiatives.

Being back at MHC, Wanner says she has come full circle. "In a way, I see myself in so many of the students that come to see me. Do You Recognize This Man? The Warman RCMP and Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers have teamed up to help locate a suspect they believe to have been involved in a fuel theft from a Warman gas station.

The provided picture (RIGHT) shows the suspect; however, both the coveralls and truck the suspect was driving at the time were both stolen.

Check Stop Leads to Arrests

On January 17, a Corman Park Police Service member stopped a semi on Beam Road. The semi-truck did not have a permit to be hauling over primary weight, and was weighed at 17,000 kg over the primary weight limit. The semi was issued a ticket and was ordered to obtain proper permits before traveling again.

On January 21, Corman Park Police Service conducted a check stop on Highway 219 and Cartwright Street.

Multiple vehicles were stopped and one driver was suspended for cannabis consumption, and one driver for alcohol.

MLA Terry Jenson’s Report from the Legislature Political Arguing Overtaking Reason in Sask.

Maybe we’d be better off in Saskatchewan if some people stopped looking at this province strictly through their own political filters. This has been longstanding in this province, but its sadly gotten worse during this pandemic.

Far too many see each and every COVID-19 development as some grand opportunity to make a pronouncement regarding their political allegiance.

Yes, pandemic information can often be confusing, contradictory and - depending on the source - quite possibly wrong. Yes, it’s a free country - you get to express your opinions, but some people don’t get that not everything they hear actually supports their core beliefs or that it needs to be spun to support their worldview.

Some of it is just reality - simply matters of fact.

Consider the recent fifth wave regarding the Omicron variant in which we are seeing unprecedented daily case numbers, but, at least so far, less deaths and ICU admissions. This underscores the reality that Omicron, while serious, according to every reasoned medical professional you will talk to, is less serious than the Delta variant that swamped Saskatchewan’s hospitals and ICUs to the point of having to send people out of province. But while a smaller percentage of people who now contact COVID-19 are getting seriously ill right now (largely because of a higher vaccination rate than before) the sheer volume of cases remains a serious threat to swamping our hospitals (largely because we still don’t have enough people vaccinated).

A certain percentage of those hospitalized will wind up in ICUs and one of the added pressures is that health care workers are also now contacting Omicron, meaning there is less of them available to care for the sick. These realities are simply facts that really can’t be debated. We surely all can agree that no one truly wants to see anyone hospitalized or in ICUs. Yet that really isn’t stopping some from twisting and contorting this reality to argue that “Omicron is just a cold” and no precautions are needed or that “vaccines don’t work, so therefore there’s no point in getting one.”

Similarly, it’s troubling to see how some are absolutely gleeful at any tragic sign of increased illness or hospitalizations because the more important thing to them is to be proven right or see the Saskatchewan Party government as proven wrong. Maybe if we were instead truly respectful of the notion that someone else might have a point, we’d be getting through things a lot better, but it isn’t just COVID-19. Consider the very good news coming from Federated Co-operatives Ltd. and AGT Foods and Ingredients that they are proceeding with a $2-billion renewal diesel and canola crushing facility outside of Regina.

With its potential to create $4.5 billion in economic activity and 2,500 jobs during construction and 150 permanent jobs when it opens in 2027, everyone can surely agree this was great news, right?

Heck, this announcement even had the added benefit that it should significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption in Saskatchewan, thus contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Now, consider the stupidity of online comments that Premier Scott Moe is just using this to distract from COVID-19 or, conversely, that this project wouldn’t have been built if we chose socialist NDP government instead of Moe’s Sask. Party administration.

No politician is going to pass up a good news announcement like this that also supports Moe’s suggestions and we do need to be looking past COVID-19. As for it wouldn’t have happened under the NDP that drove away business, it is a project driven by the Federated Co-op that’s run by Scott Banda who ran for the NDP leadership in 2001 and whose dad was an NDP MLA. Maybe we’d just be better off if some would simply put down their partisan political filters.

Another Major Economic Development Project Announced By FCL & AGT Foods Saskatchewan is blessed to have the natural resources to provide the world with the food, fuel, and fertilizer the world needs. We begin the year with tremendous optimism as a multi-billion dollar investment was announced that will bring economic growth for years to come.

Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) has announced they are working on an Integrated Agriculture Complex with AGT Foods for the City of Regina. The partnership between FCL and AGT Foods will ensure Saskatchewan exceeds our 2030 Growth Plan goal of processing 75 per cent of the canola grown inside our borders. Using 1.1 million tonnes of homegrown canola each year, the crushing facility will produce 450,000 tonnes of oil. That same oil will be used to produce renewable diesel at the plant on the same property. This new facility will feature a $2 billion renewable diesel facility and a canola crushing plant.

The development of this integrated facility will create $4.5 billion in direct and indirect economic benefits.

The investment will also mean an estimated 2,500 construction jobs and 150 high-paying operational positions when complete. Creating jobs and investing in new value-added ventures will be key to rebounding quickly from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Agriculture Research & Water Infrastructure Projects Announced Investments are also being made in the livestock and forage sector as a result of partnerships with the federal government. This year, 28 projects will receive over $5 million in support through the province’s Agriculture Development Fund. The research and innovations that will come from this funding will ensure Saskatchewan continues to set the standard for new ideas and approaches to agriculture. Research projects for this year will include the potential for native and tame forage species to enhance carbon sequestration, expanded reproduction diagnostics and improved animal health.

A federal-provincial partnership designed to help farmers and ranchers better prepare for drought has been extended. Due to hardships that many producers faced in 2021, many projects that should have qualified for the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program, were not completed.

Already dealing with the drought and the troubles that a lack of moisture caused, producers found it difficult to source the supplies, materials, and contractors needed to complete projects. Changes made will allow livestock producers, who plan to claim over $50,000 in rebates, to submit their preliminary application by the end of March 2022 to complete their projects and then submit for a rebate by the end of September.

This past year has been a brutal reminder of how precious water resources are. Having a good, reliable source can be make-or-break for producers in Saskatchewan. The Agriculture Development Fund will assist with important planning for the future. Extending the deadline will give producers more time to complete projects such as dugouts, wells or pipelines to ensure a better water supply.

2022 Sask Parks Campsite Reservation Dates Announced Outdoors enthusiasts will start planning for summer excursions this April as Provincial Parks begin accepting reservations for the 2022 season. Coming off a record-setting year in 2021 that saw over a million visitors, parks are preparing for another busy season.

Reservations for all parks participating in the seasonal site program will start on April 18th, 2022. Reservations for nightly camping will open in batches featuring four or five parks from across the province each day. That process will begin April 19th for Saskatchewan Landing, Good Spirit Lake, Candle Lake and Meadow Lake, with more locations to follow.

In preparation for the new season, Sask Parks has created some new system features to assist with the booking process. Campers will be able to compare campsites, create a list of their favourite sites, be added to a waitlist for more popular campgrounds, purchase entry passes, as well as explore the various programs or events held at each campground. Additionally, historic parks will no longer charge individual programming admission, instead only a park entry permit will be needed. For more information, please visit saskparks.com.

Stick It To Covid: Paxlovid Available To Eligible Residents January 26 Paxlovid, the first Health Canada-approved oral antiviral (pill) to treat COVID-19, will be available for eligible residents starting Wednesday, January 26.

Eligibility - Paxlovid is for treatment of symptomatic COVID-19 after a positive test -- not for prevention of COVID-19 infection. It is taken in tablet form twice a day for five days. It stops the virus from multiplying in the body, to help people with lower immunity to COVID-19 overcome the infection and prevent progression to hospitalization.

Paxlovid is only recommended for adults over 18 who: • are symptomatic and within five days of developing symptoms; • test positive (PCR or rapid test) for mild or moderate COVID-19; • do not have any medical conditions that would make treatment inappropriate; and meet one of the following criteria: o are immunocompromised, regardless of vaccine status; o are 55 and older, and not fully vaccinated; or o have a medical condition that puts them at high risk and are not fully vaccinated.

Those who believe they meet the criteria must call HealthLine 811 for further assessment of their eligibility.

Paxlovid is only being provided to eligible patients through referral by HealthLine 811. Do not visit your family physician or pharmacy to request this medication.

Saskatchewan has received a limited quantity (900 courses) from the federal supply but further supplies are expected. The current supply has been distributed to select community pharmacies across the province to be accessible to eligible residents, once they've received a referral. This includes working with Indigenous Services Canada to ensure access for First Nations and Métis communities.
