Walking the Wonders of the World

The Saskatoon Council on Aging is once again holding the Senior Globe Walk from January to April. This year’s theme is ‘Walk the Wonders of the World’, where adults aged 50+ can count 1km for every 1300 steps taken, or 2km for every 30 minutes of physical activity. This is the third year that the City of Martensville has participated, and those interested can walk at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion every Tuesday from 1pm-2pm until April 30th.

Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule

Between the months of October and May, the City puts in place an alternating schedule that includes meter reading for half of the City.

The alternating schedule is in place during these months due to extra time required to complete city-wide, month to month meter reads. Changes to seasonal staffing, colder temperatures, inclement weather, higher priority maintenance issues in cooler seasons, are all contributing factors in encouraging residents to provide their own meter reading.

Atom A Martensville Snipers Win B Final Submitted

The Atom A Snipers participated in the George Watson Atom A Classic held in Regina this past weekend at the Cooperators Center. They had a busy weekend playing six games in total and losing only one. This was a three day tournament with 32 teams entered.

They won the B final against the Regina Shamrocks 8-7 scoring the winning goal with 39 seconds left in OT.

This year’s team is coached by Billy Hamilton (head coach), and Assistants Trevor Adamus, Jeff Oblander, Troy Granatier and Hugh Hamilton.

Keeping Hydrants Clear of Snow

With the recent snowfall, the City of Martensville and the Martensville Fire Department would like to ask residents for their assistance with keeping the fire hydrants clear of snow, parked vehicles, and other obstructions. Clearing snow from the hydrant helps keep hydrants visible and easily assessable which will save valuable time in the case of an emergency. Property Owners may be subject to fines for burying or obstructing hydrants.

It’s All-Star weekend in the NHL! The weekend gets going in St. Louis with the Skills Competition Friday night and they have made a couple changes to the events.

They will still have the staples of the Skills Competition including Fastest Skater, Accuracy Shooting, and Hardest Shot along with the new addition from last year the Save Streak.

There are two new events this year though and they are going to be wildly entertaining. The first new event is the Elite Women’s 3-on-3 which will showcase the top female hockey players from Canada and the United States in a 3-on-3 game with two 10-minute periods. Some notable names from Canada are Meghan Agosta, Marie-Philip Poulin, and Natalie Spooner who have a combined 10 Gold Medals and 34 total medals from Olympic and International competition.

The other new addition to the Skills Competition is the Shooting Stars. In this event players will be placed on an elevated platform (about 30 feet tall) behind the goal where they will shoot seven pucks at a variety of targets and will earn points for every target hit.

Then on Saturday at 7pm the 3-on-3 tournament will start with the Metropolitan Division taking on the Atlantic, 20014SS2 followed by the Pacific playing the Central, with the winners then playing each other in the final 20-minute mini game. Players that will be appearing in the All-Star festivities from Canadian teams are Anthony Duclair from the Ottawa Senators, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews, and Frederick Andersen from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Shea Weber from the Montreal Canadiens, Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, Conner McDavid will Captain the Pacific Division along-side Edmonton Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl, Vancouver will be represented by Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, and Jacob Markstrom, and the Calgary Flames will be sending Matthew Tkachuk, Mark Giordano, and David Rittich.

Bingo Night in Martensville Local Business Lends a Helping Hand to Paws in Need Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

There are many animals in rescues and shelters all around the world that are in need of homes, and sometimes, the stars align and without even meaning to, someone falls in love with one of these animals and opens their heart and their home to it. Over the holiday season, Jenny Goodwin, who lives in Ottawa; was sent to the Prince Albert area for work. Rather than be alone over Christmas, she decided to spend some time volunteering at a local humane society. After hearing back from the Battlefords Humane Society, she volunteered four days there and met numerous animals that were being cared for; however, one stuck out.

This particular dog had been found in a dumpster on Christmas Eve and was brought in by the garbage man that discovered him. Radar, who is an approximately 9-month old Shepherd mix, was scared in the new environment and spent much of his time huddled in the back of his kennel. “By the end of my stint I had accidentally fallen for him.

Although I was looking to eventually adopt an older dog, this guy stuck out. I spent time with him and he eventually started to come out of his shell,” Goodwin said.

On January 4th, Radar was officially adopted and was going to be heading to his new home; however, the journey for Radar to get to Ottawa proved to be a difficult one.

At the time, the airlines had holiday pet embargoes on, so Goodwin reached out to Furry Hobos N Hiway Hero"s Dog Transport, a group in place to assist in the transport of dogs across Canada. Due to a series of events that were out of their control, such as a broken down truck, the transport fell through.

Goodwin was left with three options at this point, which included; find a flight companion to fly with Radar to Ottawa; cargo transport; or fly back to Saskatchewan to get him herself. Thanks to some amazing people coming together, barring any complications; Radar should be in his new home by Sunday.

One of the people to step up and ensure that this dog would be able to get to his new family was Kristine O’Brien, the owner/operator of Paws Republic Boarding, Training & Grooming Centre. O’Brien offered her facility to board Radar at no cost while they were waiting on arrangements. In addition to this, O’Brien will be opening the facility early on Sunday in order to have Radar picked up and on his way to the airport to make his flight.

O’Brien became involved after Ambrosia Varaschin of Martensville, who was driving to pick Radar up, reached out to her in need of a crate for the journey. “Within hours Kristine had sourced us a crate for free. Then she offered to board him overnight because one of my dogs can be aggressive. I insisted on paying for boarding because it’s my dog that’s the complicating problem, but Kristine absolutely refused,” Varaschin explained.

Upon finding out that the flight would be leaving quite early on Sunday morning and Paws Republic doesn’t open until 1pm, Varaschin suggested that she board her dogs and keep Radar at her home to make things easier. “Kristine being Kristine simply said, ‘whatever this little guy needs, and made arrangements to open early that morning,” Varaschin added.

In addition to Paws Republic and Varaschin stepping up to help get Radar to his new home, the community of Martensville also contributed after Varaschin posted a request looking for donations of blankets in order to ensure that Radar would be warm on his journey.

The event was open to all ages and for $15, those participating had the opportunity to play a wide variety of bingo games. Approximately 20 people attended and all funds raised will be used towards the seniors club. Another bingo is planned for January 29th at 7pm.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic Launches Bachelor of Applied Management Program Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Starting in 2020, graduates with a non-business diploma or journeyperson certification can enroll in the Bachelor of Applied Management program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and earn a bachelor’s degree in just two years. The program is unique in Saskatchewan and was developed to assist non-business graduates gain necessary skills to move up in the workforce. This is the third stand-alone degree developed by Sask Polytech in direct response to labour market demand.

“Sask Polytech graduates are driving the economic engine of this province,” says Dr. Larry Rosia, president and CEO. “Diploma graduates and journeypersons applying for this baccalaureate program will bring their knowledge and prior work experience to their studies, will have the opportunity to put into practice what they’ve learned, and will bring their new leadership and management skills to their future workplaces.”

Building on their technical expertise and work experience, students in the Bachelor of Applied Management program will develop administration and leadership skills for management positions. Where the Wild Pigs Roam

In 2013, Ruth Aschim—along with 99.9 per cent of the population—was unaware wild pigs were roaming rural Canada.

Today, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) doctoral candidate is an expert on the animals, where they thrive and the destruction they can cause. But landing a wildlife research position at a university is no easy task, she explained.

“Wildlife research is expensive; you’re using GPS collars and aerial surveys and things like that. A lot of people are interested in it, so it was hard to find a program that would take me.”

Among the academics she approached was USask Associate Professor Ryan Brook, whom she’d heard about as an undergrad.

The wild pig problem emerged from livestock producers’ desire to diversify their herds for export markets. The boars proved more difficult to manage than expected. They rooted under and jumped over fences, while producers also simply opened the gates and let them go. Many thought they would not survive in the wild.

They were wrong. And although there are large numbers of them, they’re not easy to find.

“Because we’re looking at a nocturnal species, an elusive species… we couldn’t use aerial surveys, the conventional wildlife monitoring technique, because we didn’t even know where they were. How were we going to go looking for them?

“I did all my data collection through social science techniques. I spoke with stakeholders and wildlife professionals. I would travel around Saskatchewan going to wildlife-related meetings or events or fundraisers, giving presentations and just talking to people.

“Then I spent three months living out of my

vehicle (in summer 2015) and I camped across Western Canada, talking to conservation officers and biologists.”

Results showed that wild pigs are the most widespread in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta; smaller populations exist in B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

But despite all the research, it’s still impossible to say how many wild pigs are out there.

But why does establishing the numbers and habitats of wild pigs matter? “Disease is a huge concern with wild pigs,” Aschim said. “They can be transmitted to domestic livestock, wildlife, and humans.

“Then we have environmental issues, which are huge with wild pigs. One of the main problems is the rooting behaviour; they upturn the soil because they like to eat the roots and tubers of vegetation. It’s essentially like a rototiller went through an area.”

Bare soil is open to weeds, erosion and nutrient cycle disturbance, as well as a loss of biodiversity, she said.

Another concern is water quality. Wild pigs wallow in wetlands, causing bank slumping, erosion, water sedimentation and—because of defecation and urination— algae growth and disease transmission.

Furthermore, one would not want to surprise a boar. They’re not aggressive unless threatened, but their four sharp tusks—the top tusks sharpen the bottom ones— can slash someone quite seriously.

Considering the many problems created by wild pigs, Aschim is often asked how she feels about her research subjects.

“I don’t like them,” she tells her questioners, “but I respect them.”

Start your Degree at Medicine Hat College

Dr. Nicoelle Wanner has been going to Medicine Hat College (MHC) for as long as she can remember.

She recalls following big footprints through the hallways when she attended early learning programs as a child, singing with the MHC Girls’ Choir as a teen, and studying in the cafeteria for high school finals. More recently, she goes to the college to work as one of the physicians in the campus medical clinic.

“Medicine Hat College has always been here for me,” says Wanner. When the time came to start her post-secondary education, the decision was a no brainer.

“I could have moved away to another city or another university, but that was never really high on my priority list. I knew that I could get a very good education here with the added logical benefits of cost saving and smaller class sizes,” she explains.

“The college gave me the education and training I needed, in the environment that I needed during that time in my life. I never had to sacrifice anything by staying here.”

After completing two years of university transfer science courses, she went on to finish a Bachelor of Science at the University of Calgary. It was there she had her first real ‘a-ha’ moment about what made a MHC education so special.

“I was sitting in my first big lecture hall with four hundred students and thinking ‘Oh my God, what is happening?’ because that was not what I was used to. At MHC, you just had so much more one-on-one time with your instructors which improved the education for sure, but quite frankly it improved the fun.”

In addition to the solid education she received at MHC, she also had the opportunity to connect with people and develop relationships – skills that have served her well in her career.

Wanner finished her medical degree at the University of Alberta and returned to Medicine Hat for her residency. With strong roots in the community, she established her medical practice, started her family and began building the life she wanted to have.

After 13 years, the busy mom of three closed her practice and moved to the MHC campus clinic, allowing her more time for family activities and non-clinical initiatives.

“The thing I love most about my job is the opportunities it's given me. My training has allowed me to create the job that I want and give me that independence to really tailor my work,” says Wanner, who is also involved with improving pediatric mental health services in Medicine Hat.

Being back at MHC, Wanner says she has come full circle. "In a way, I see myself in so many of the students that come to see me. I know they just want to get to where they're going, but I want to tell them to sit back and take their time. Enjoy the ride - you're going to get there eventually if that's where you're meant to be.”

For the past 12 years, Saskatchewan has been growing. More people, more jobs and more investment in our families and communities. We want to ensure this strong growth continues. Your Saskatchewan Party government has a new Growth Plan for the new decade so everyone continues to benefit from a growing province.

Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan is a roadmap for a growing province of 1.4 million people and a strong economy with 100,000 more jobs. Increasing the number of young people who stay here to start a career and family will help grow the population.

Strong Job Growth Continues

This past year, Saskatchewan saw an increase of 10,400 jobs, or 1.8 per cent, from 2018. More than half of that job growth is due to full-time jobs.

The energy sector is also off to a roaring start in 2020 with 57 of Saskatchewan’s 105 rigs working January 6th, up from 19 rigs just three days earlier. This means that Saskatchewan has a higher rig utilization rate than both Alberta and British Columbia. In spite of external headwinds, the creation of 10,400 jobs last year is an indication that Saskatchewan has a robust, diverse and growing economy and shows that our Growth Plan target is achievable and well on its way to being met.

The interest out here in who gets picked as the next Conservative Party of Canada leader goes beyond the obvious reason.
