The Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon on Thursday, January 10th at the Canalta Hotel in Martensville. The purpose of the event was to provide Warman Martensville Business Excellence Award (WMBEXA) nominees an opportunity to learn more about the application process and about the benefits that past winners have experienced.

Winners from the past year’s WMBEXA gala were in attendance to answer questions.

Martensville Author Dianne Young Begins New Project Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Earlier this year, Martensville resident Dianne Young released the book ‘Dear Me: The Widow Letters’, an anthology of letters written by widows to their newly-widowed selves. Young, who is a widow herself, put a call out to widows asking, “If you could send a letter back in time to your newly-widowed self – that heartbroken and overwhelmed woman – what would you say?” The response Young received was astounding. A total of 20 letters were chosen and included within the book, which Young hoped would not only help newly-widowed women through their grieving process, but also help others to better understand what a widow is going through.

Following the success of ‘The Widow Letters’, Young decided to pursue another project; ‘Dear Me: The Mother Letters’. This book will include letters from mothers that have experienced the loss of a child, this time asking the question; “If you could send a letter back in time to your newly-bereaved self, what would you say?” For women that have experienced such loss, would they write themselves words of comfort; advice; hope; encouragement; warning; all of the above and more?

Young wanted to provide an outlet for mothers to share their experiences with others. “For me, as a widow, ‘Dear Me: The Widow Letters’ was extremely helpful and I learned so much. I found that book to be not only good for widows, but for others that wanted to understand better what a widow goes through. I thought the same would be true for mothers that have experienced the death of a child. I think it would be good for people to see what women would say to themselves and what that situation is like. It is not something you can imagine at all and sometimes people have a hard time understanding what others are feeling, or struggling with,” Young said.

Letters will be accepted until the end of 2019. In January of 2020, she will begin the task of going through each letter and choosing a collection to be included within the book. Letters can be written by mothers that have lost their child at any age. “Whether it is at birth, a young child, a teenager or an adult, no matter the age, your son or daughter is always your child. I think there will be a lot of depth to the book as there will be a lot of different ages, and experiences.”

As letters came in for the first book, Young received much feedback from the women that submitted letters, stating that they had found the process to be quite therapeutic, which Young is hoping will be the same for her upcoming book. “I hope this can be a way to get people opening up and sharing and enlightening people that don’t know what to say or do after someone they love experiences such loss. Hopefully this can be a way to better educate people on a better way to approach women that have lost a child.”

Going through the letters for ‘Dear Me: The Widow Letters’, Young could see similarities in some of the stories, but each one was unique to that person, which she anticipates will be the same for the submissions that come in from mothers. “It is unique because the individual they lost is a unique individual and their relationship with that person is different than anyone else’s.

I suspect it will be the same as a mother that has lost a child.

That connection, no one else has that.” Young said.

“This gave us an opportunity to sit down with all of the members of our group and really focus on our success and it gave us a purpose and a focus to see that what we are doing is great and that it is working,” Reis said of the process that the MCRP went through prior to winning 2018’s Non-Profit of the Year Award.

Joelle Ward of SAS Home & Floral Boutique, the 2018 Business of the Year winners, stated that, “We wrote a business plan before we opened our business and every time we have done awards, we pull out that business plan and follow along. It is really interesting to see how its changed. By doing the application, you can see that you are moving in the right direction and it has been really good to go through and analyze and it is validation that maybe what you are doing is good, and right.”

Applications for the award are due by February 4th and following all submissions, a panel of anonymous judges will scour through each application, applying a point value to each one. On March 14th, five finalists from each of the five categories will be announced. Categories include; Business of the Year, New Business of the Year, Customer Service, Community Involvement and Non-Profit of the Year.

The fourth annual WMBEXA gala will take place May 3rd at the North Ridge Centennial Community Centre in Martensville.

Eventually Young would like to do a book from the men’s perspective on loss; however for the moment, she stated that she is sticking with something she is familiar with. Although she has not lost a child, being a mother, she can relate to that connection that a mother has with her child. “I know the letters will be tough to read, but I think the understanding that I will gain and that others will hopefully gain from reading these letters is going to be so valuable.”

Letters can be submitted until the end of this year and for those that are chosen, writers will receive $50 and a copy of the book. Young is requesting that letters be approximately 500 words and notes that women can choose to use their full names, first name and last initial, or remain anonymous if preferred. For letters that are accepted, Young asks if a photo of your child can be used, along with information about when and how they died, how old you were when they died and how many years into the past you are reaching.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures - this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets.

Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a nonposted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Christmas Tree Collection Site Winter FunFest 2019, February 2nd

A Christmas Tree Collection Site has been set up next to the North Ridge Centennial Community Centre where collected trees will be part of the bonfire and fireworks display during Winter Funfest.

Please Note: Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, string, garland, tree stands and any other decorations. Do not dispose of artificial trees or other yard and household waste (only live Christmas trees will be accepted). Do not bag or wrap your tree (including recyclable tree bags). Please do not deposit any Christmas trees at the Yard Waste Composting Site (10th Ave. S). Please do not stack or place trees in a manner which may cause them to easily topple over, or in an area which impedes vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

Accident on 4th Street Intersection Results in Injuries January 7, 2019 at 3:05 p.m. Police received a complaint of a 3 vehicle accident at the intersection of 4th Street south and Centennial Drive South in Martensville. Police attended along with Martensville Fire and found that a vehicle travelling southbound slid through the intersection and was struck by an eastbound truck. The car was pushed into a third vehicle. One of the vehicles required towing from the scene. There were minor injuries to an occupant of one of the vehicles.

Complaint of Impaired Driver Results in Arrest January 9, 2019 at 12:30 a.m. Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Highway 305 near

Warman. Police conducted patrols and located the vehicle. They spoke with the 38 year old female driver who appeared to have consumed alcohol.

She was arrested and taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample.

She was released a short time later for an upcoming court date on Impaired driving charges. There were no injuries.

PEOPLE Disturbance Reported at Warman Residence January 10, 2019 at 3:35 p.m. Police received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence in Warman.

The caller reported that they had been assaulted by a person in the residence.

Police attended and arrested a 40 year old male.

He was released a short time later for an upcoming court date on Assault charges. The 24 year old female was not injured.

Complaint of Intoxicated Male at Residence Causing Problems January 13, 2019 at 12:15 a.m. Police received a complaint of an intoxicated male causing problems at a residence in Warman. Police attended and found that all was fine in the residence and the 19 year old male had stopped causing problems.

There were no charges or injuries.

Prairie Women on Snowmobiles - Riding For a Cause Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Prairie Women on Snowmobiles will soon be embarking on their 19th journey across the province. A core group of ten riders will set out on February 2nd and make their way through many Saskatchewan communities, ending their mission on February 8th. The purpose of the ride is to raise provincial awareness and focus attention on breast cancer and the recreation of snowmobiling as well as raise funds for breast cancer research. Since inception, PWOS have raised approximately $2.5 million.

Core riders raise a minimum of $3,000 once they are chosen to ride and are required to provide their own snowmobile and gear; however, many riders are able to obtain the use of a snowmobile from a dealer and donated gear.

Once riders are chosen, the route is mapped out and they try to visit as many rider hometowns as possible. Since the map is designed prior to winter, it is impossible to ensure that there will be enough snow to ride. If snow levels are low, the riders are transported via van to each community and continue to make their stops as planned.

The group will be making a stop in the community on February 7th. A steak and chicken dinner will be held at the Adobe Inn and will include a 50/50 draw, Dutch auction and silent auction. The event will be hosted by the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club in cooperation with the Saskatoon Snowmobile Club.

The local Kinsmen Club first became involved with PWOS in 2017 when they were approached by the group. “Another area organization was supposed to be organizing it for them, but unfortunately, they had to back out a month before. The Kinsmen accepted the challenge and organized the banquet for them,” Kinsmen President Arnie Deschner stated.

This year’s event will mark the second banquet the Kinsmen have organized for PWOS and they are looking forward to being a part of such an incredible event. “The Kinsmen’s goal is to serve our communities greatest needs. Breast Cancer touches all members of our community and we are honored to be involved with PWOS as they work to raise awareness of the disease and helping to raise funds toward researching for a cure,” Deschner added.

Martensville resident Gerri Brataschuk-Sametts has been involved with the organization for numerous years, as both a rider and an organizer. Sametts explained that at these stops, the core riders introduce themselves and explain the reason that they became involved with PWOS. “Another neat thing that they do at each stop throughout the ride is their Survivor pins. It is a special PWOS pin that is presented to anyone in the crowd that is a breast cancer survivor or to their family members if they passed away,” Sametts explained.

“The whole experience of joining a mission was amazing; the people, the cause,

the ride itself! There is nothing that compares to this experience. You meet so many amazing people in each community and they were all there because they’ve been touched by this disease in some way,” Sametts said. Some of Sametts most memorable experiences occurred in smaller communities, where they witness an entire town attend. “Some days are tougher than others as you meet a lot of survivors, ladies currently fighting the disease and sadly, some family members of those that passed away.

It is a very emotional week because you are away from your family, physically tired from riding so many kilometers and emotionally tired from all the things you have seen and done.”

For most of the riders, there is a personal connection to breast cancer, which drove them to want to participate in the annual fundraiser. Although recounting their personal experiences each night can be difficult, Sametts says that every single person that rides in a mission says it’s an amazing experience and they would do it again in a heartbeat.

Scams And Frauds Targeting Saskatchewan Residents

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) and the Canadian AntiFraud Centre (CAFC) want to warn residents about common frauds and scams that are occurring in Saskatchewan.

“We are partnering with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre because we have common concerns about frauds happening in the province,” Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority Director of Securities Dean Murrison said.

The most prominent frauds and scams in Saskatchewan by complaint are: • Phishing – Any email falsely claiming to be an established legitimate organization such as a financial institution, business or government agency in an attempt to have the consumer give private and personal information.

• Service scam – Any false, deceptive or misleading promotion of or solicitation for services. These solicitations involve third parties that commonly make offers for telecommunications, and internet finance services.

• Prize scam – Any false, deceptive or misleading solicitation advising victims they have won or have a chance to win something, but are required to purchase something first or pay an advance fee, such as taxes, to receive the prize.

• Sale of fraudulent securities – Sale of investments that do not exist.

• Recovery scam – A victim who lost money in a previous scam, is approached by someone claiming to work for a government agency, private company or consumer organization and told that they can help recover the lost money for a fee.

• Extortion – Any person who unlawfully obtains money, property or services from a person, entity or institution, through coercion.

How to protect yourself: • Be very cautious when speaking to people on the phone you do not know.

• If someone emails, texts or calls asking for personal or banking information, do not provide the information.

• Never wire money to a stranger.

• Never make a cheque payable to a financial advisor personally or to a financial advisor’s personal company, it should only be payable to the registered dealer or issuer of the securities.

• If someone contacts you about an investment opportunity, contact a professional adviser.

• If you are investing money, check and make sure the person you are sending money to is a registered professional (http://aretheyregistered.ca/) with the Canadian Securities Administrators.

Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

Lessons We Can Learn From Protestors

The biggest problem with protests isn’t necessarily the protestors but how we react to them and their message.

This has clearly been the frustration for pipeline protestors, including those at an event last week in front of the Legislature in Regina.

The loss of oil patch jobs because of a downturn in the oil economy made worse by the lack of pipelines is a serious problem. Yet it very much seems the federal Liberal government and Eastern Canada can’t hear the concern. This was Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe’s message last week, when he stood before the protestors in -30 windchill. “We feel like we’ve been left out in the cold,” Moe told 200 or so pro-pipeline protestors. “I know at times it feels like no one is listening to us.”

Moe’s sentiments were echoed by other speakers at this rally, including organizer Cody Battershill who emphasized his group’s message was to be based on “positivity, respective and inclusivity.”

Prior to the event, Battershill made it known that the so-called yellow vest protestors were not welcomed … or at least, they would not be welcomed to wear their yellow vests. The yellow vest movement has come to be associated with violence in Europe. And here in Canada (including rallies in Regina) their messages have also been about antiimmigration and anti-vaccination and images threatening Trudeau’s safety. “Wear your hard hats, wear your work coveralls, but please don’t wear the yellow vests because that’s not what our movement is about,” Battershill told the Leader-Post’s Arthur White-Crummey.

Sometimes, protestors’ messages do get side-tracked, but the far bigger problem is that people often don’t listen, preferring to simply write off all protesters as malcontents or ne’er do wells. Certainly, many, in the federal government and Eastern Canada seem to be doing this pipeline movement because of the fringe.

Admittedly, last week’s protest did have its political leanings, with Moe and other Saskatchewan Party politicians at the podium and federal Conservative politicians like Senator Denise bashing federal Liberals at the microphone.

(That said, this would hardly be the first protest we have seen in front of the Saskatchewan Legislature with a tinge of political partnership.)

Nevertheless, one can appreciate Moe’s frustration and the frustration of pipefitters, riggers and others those whose livelihoods are now at stake, but there also is more than a little irony here. It wasn’t so very long ago that Moe and his government encountered a very different kind of protest in front of the Saskatchewan Legislature.

It was the so-called teepee protest that started almost a year ago after Gerald Stanley’s not-guilty verdict after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of Colten Boushie. That protest camp morphed into “Justice for our Stolen Childen”, focusing on past and present problems with Saskatchewan’s child welfare system.

Of considerable controversy was Moe’s decision not to visit the teepee camp or even meet with the protestors.

His stated reason for not doing so is that these “campers” were conducting an “illegal protest”, unlikely last week’s noon hour protest that had permits from the Wascana Centre Authority.

In another irony, Moe found himself apologizing the day before the pipeline protest for the “Sixties Scoop” government policy of adopting children from Metis and First Nations child and raising them in white homes. This was actually a huge part of the very concerns raised by the teepee protestors this summer, which raised both historic wrongs of the Sixties Scoop and ongoing problems with social services.

Those protestors were also very frustrated by a politician that would not meet with them. So maybe the lesson here is that we should all take the time to listen. You never know what side of the protest you will be on.

Heppner Happy With Accomplishments During her Time as MLA

Last week, MLA Nancy Heppner announced that she would not be seeking re-election for the Provincial Election taking place in October of 2020. Heppner has been the MLA for Martensville and Warman since 2007 and within that time, has been a part of many big changes within the region.

Heppner grew up with various levels of government surrounding her, with a history teacher father who sat on Rosthern Town Council for years and later becoming Mayor and a mother who was on the local and district school board. “They led by example about different levels of government, involvement and decision making. It was very much hands on learning in our house when I was growing up. It is literally in my blood,” Heppner explained.

Appreciating the opportunity to learn about government at a young age, Heppner praises teachers that go above and beyond to teach their students about the electoral system. Throughout her time as MLA, one of Heppner’s favorite things to do was to speak with students about government and encourage them, once old enough, to educate themselves and vote. “It is so great that they are learning about it and to be able to plant a seed is so important. So many people think that their vote doesn’t matter, but it absolutely does.”

In 2007, Heppner was elected during a by-election for the then Martensville constituency, taking the seat of her father, the late Ben Heppner. During her campaign, Heppner spoke to many residents within the area and from input from them, she began to create a list of things she felt were important to advocate for within the region. “Due to the extreme population growth, one of the biggest things for me was the overcrowding in our schools. We now have five new schools and a major expansion at Martensville High School, so that was one of the biggest accomplishments for me,” said Heppner.

In addition to the much-needed schools additions in the communities, Heppner also wanted to see changes made to the rural highways and with the reconstruction of Highways 305 and 684, along with the addition of the overpasses to Highways 11 and 12, Heppner is proud of how far things have come.

During her time as MLA, Heppner sat on numerous cabinets within the provincial government and learned many valuable lessons from those that she has worked alongside. Acknowledging that she has a very curious mind, Heppner is grateful for all of the opportunities over the years.

The decision to decline seeking re-election was something that Heppner felt was due. Having accomplished many of the things she had initially set out to do, it is now time to see what is next. “I felt like it was time for fresh eyes and someone new to represent the constituency. I did what I set out to do and together with our communities, we accomplished a lot.”

What’s next for Heppner is still undecided, which she is perfectly fine with. “I have come to realize that my best laid plans don’t work out and life just presents opportunity. Some people need to know what is going to be happening tomorrow, but I don’t so I am ok with it. It has worked out pretty well for me so far!”

“The support that I have seen from the day I announced that I was going to run has been overwhelming, so thank you to all of my constituents and thank you to my Constituency Assistant Whitney Friesen. He has done a great job serving the people in the constituency as well.”

They have also been hosting a drop-in night which have been dubbed ‘Friday Night Family and Friends Fun Night’. Vancouver and Edmonton are still on the outside of the playoffs looking in. The Canucks are sending their rookie sensation Elias Pettersson to the All-Star game while the Oilers will be represented by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who got in as one of the “Last Man In” fan vote.

As for the Ottawa Senators, they are still in the basement of the NHL standings with a 17-24-5 record. They will be sending rookie defenceman Thomas Chabot to the All-Star game as long as he has returned from his upper-body injury. Chabot is third in team scoring with 38 points (10 goals, 28 assists).
