SoulPower Celebrates New Location

SoulPower Fitness in Martensville held a Grand Opening on January 11th from 1pm-3pm to celebrate their new location on Rock Ridge Road in Martensville’s southeast corner.

The grand opening included an open house and featured Jess from Nourish Natural Health Food Store who held a mini Health Expo, an opportunity to ask questions where people could learn more about the health benefits of fitness and nourishment, and a chance to win prizes; one of which was a three month membership to SoulPower Fitness.

Rochelle Wotherspoon, owner/ operator of SoulPower Fitness, has been involved in the fitness industry for 16 years instructing classes. Prior to opening SoulPower Fitness, Wotherspoon ran a home based personal training studio/small group fitness for five years upon moving to Martensville.

Following the birth of her second child, Wotherspoon decided to seek out a commercial space to work out of the home.

Her first location was on Centennial Drive North, where they were located for the past three years. Earlier this year, Wotherspoon made the decision to move to a new space, which could offer more opportunity for her clients. “This new space allows us to have two studios and run two classes at prime times, as well as offers lots of parking and class options. Over the past three years, SoulPower Fitness has expanded their drop in classes from 30 per week to 65 per week due to demand from their clients. Additionally, upon opening, they began with an instructor team of ten and now have 27 people teaching classes. “We have tripled our yoga offerings which we are super excited about,” said Wotherspoon. In addition to yoga, classes such as cycle, boot camp and lifting are available, which are available either through a membership, or pass pricing options. A $50 trial month is available for people to sample the 65 weekly drop-in classes available to see what is the best match for them.

Although everyone at SoulPower Fitness loved the previous space, a larger area was required in order to keep up with the demand. The previous space is currently available for sublease.

City Discusses Priorities For RCMP in 2020 Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The first Committee of the Whole meeting for 2020 was held on Tuesday, January 14th. The meeting began with Ted Schaeffer who discussed a request from the Martensville Curling Club (MCC) regarding the expansion that took place in the Martensville Curling Mezzanine. Initially, when this expansion took place, the City of Martensville and the MCC had hoped that there would be opportunity for profit sharing; however, in an email that Clint Dieno, President of the MCC, submitted to Schaeffer, it notes that due to a large number of private rentals, and because the lounge is not in operation on weekends, there has not been a profit. The MCC is asking the City to waive the rental of the space for the 2019/2020 season.

Schaeffer also presented Council with a request from Carlene Tamke, who asked that the City of Martensville reimburse a portion of the rental fee for a volleyball fundraising tournament held on January 4, 2020. The proceeds from the event will be going towards the Hope Cancer Help Centre. The total amount paid for rental fee was $1931.02. Council discussed this and they are working on getting a policy in place so that when requests like this come up, they will have to meet certain criteria.

Dillon Shewchuk, Community Economic Development Manager, provided an update to Council on various site and business inquiries, including visiting a care home in December to discuss the general opportunity around a care home in the community and positive impacts it could bring. Shewchuk also mentioned discussions that took place with a realtor regarding the Retail Liquor Permits that recently closed. Basile & Sons Holdings Ltd. were awarded the permit for Martensville, as well as two other communities within the province.

As part of the RCMP’s annual review of priorities, they have asked the City of Martensville to provide feedback on areas that the City feels are important. All feedback will be taken into consideration by the RCMP as they prepare their plan for the coming year.

Keeping Hydrants Clear of Snow

With the recent snowfall, the City of Martensville and the Martensville Fire Department would like to ask residents for their assistance with keeping the fire hydrants clear of snow, parked vehicles, and other obstructions. Clearing snow from the hydrant helps keep hydrants visible and easily assessable which will save valuable time in the case of an emergency.

Property Owners may be subject to fines for burying or obstructing hydrants.

As of Tuesday afternoon the Calgary Flames are the hottest Canadian team in the NHL with a 25-18-5 record. Calgary suffered their first loss of the New Year when they were shut out by Carey Price and the Montreal Canadians, but the Flames still lead the jam packed Pacific Division and sit 10th overall with 55 points.

The next four Canadian teams are all separated by just two points (three if you include Calgary). Toronto is officially next on the list due to their 23 regulation or overtime wins compared to Vancouver’s 22. Toronto is 6-2-2 in their last 10 games but have lost three in a row and just received news on Monday that star defenceman Morgan Reilly would be missing at least eight weeks with a fractured foot. The Leafs are holding down third spot in the Atlantic and 12th overall with a 24-16-6 record (54 points) but it wouldn’t take much to see them drop out of a playoff spot.

The Vancouver Canucks also have 54 points which puts them third in the Pacific and 13th overall in the league with a record of 25-17-4. Vancouver was on a seven-game win streak before they lost two in a row on a tough Florida road trip but have gotten back in the win column with back-to-back wins over Buffalo and Minnesota. One point back of the Canucks are the Edmonton Oilers who occupy the final Wild Card spot with a record of 24-18-5.

The Oilers are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games and will need more consistency if they want to hang on to that final playoff spot. Hot on Edmonton’s heels are the Winnipeg Jets who are just one point out of the playoffs with a 24-18-4 record (52 points).

The Martensville Library Board is always looking for new member and new ideas.

Regular Board Meetings are held approximately 5 times per year. Board Members participate in the meetings and also volunteer time to help out with special library events and fundraising.

The Jets are not looking great right now as they have just three wins in their last 10 games. A little bit further down the standings is where you will find the Montreal Canadians who can’t seem to win games unless Carey Price stands on his head.

The Habs had lost eight games in a row before Price found his groove in a 41-save 2-1 OT win against Ottawa and followed that with a 31-save shutout over Calgary. Montreal is seven points back of a playoff spot and will need to rely on more than just Carey Price if they want to make a push for the post-season.

Then there are the Ottawa Senators, currently riding a seven-game winless drought, 15-points out of the playoffs, and have a better record than just two other teams as they sit 29th overall at 16-22-7 (39 points).

The Martensville Maven Marlies hosted a tournament in Dalmeny from January 3-5, where a total of eight teams went head to head. Teams participating in the tournament were: Regina Rebels Red, Regina Rebels Blue, Outlook Ice Hawks, Moose Jaw Yellow Mavericks, Western Prairie Thunder, Saskatoon Comet Sonics, Warman Bearcats and the Martensville Maven Marlies.

The Marlies played a total of four games and wound up victorious in each one.

For the A Final, they went against the Regina Rebels Red, earning the W with a score of 7-0.

“The girls had a great weekend and were undefeated, resulting in them winning the A Final and coming in first place in the tournament,” Team Manager Jody Coller, explained.

Neighborhood Watch Helping Thwart Criminal Activity Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Neighborhood Watch (MNW) has been working closely with the local RCMP detachment in order to deter criminal activity within the community.

“Basically, our role in the community is to be an extra set of eyes and report back to the RCMP if we notice anything suspicious,” Martin Doell, who founded the Martensville Neighborhood Watch with his wife Donna, explained.

Currently approximately six people, including Martin and Donna, make up the MNW, and although the group manages to patrol regularly (weather dependent), Martin noted that they are always looking for more volunteers.

“Ideally, we would like to see ten or more people take part in patrolling, which would be a minimal time commitment for each person. We would be able to get out patrolling the city more often if we had more people,” added Doell.

Some of the more common incidents that the MNW has come across include people leaving garage doors open accidentally, leaving side garage doors unlocked, leaving desirable items in a vehicle which draws criminals in, or leaving vehicle doors unlocked. Doell advises residents to ensure that valuables are taken out of vehicles, or hidden away from sight, and double checking to make sure vehicles are locked. “We have mirror hangers available for vehicles that state that the vehicle has been cleaned out and there is nothing of value inside if people are interested.”

Doell also advises that people be neighborly and help each other out. “Having your neighbors contact information is helpful and it is always good to see people looking out for one another.

We have forms available for people where they can fill in their neighbors details. It is all about taking care of each other. If people do that and keep an eye out, it does help thwart criminal activity,” Doell said.

Because the MNW is run on donations alone, Doell said that any help from local businesses would be greatly appreciated. “We like to be identified as the Neighborhood Watch, so it would be nice to have clothing with logos on it.

We put in as much of our own money as possible, but help is always a bonus.”

Old Political Assumptions Need Re-Thinking

A killer drone 10,200 kilometres away could have a big impact on the Saskatchewan election still eight months from now. That drone that took out Iranian general, Qassim Suleimani, said to be the second most powerful person in the state that’s long been American’s enemy, could yet have a profound effect on politics in many parts of the world, including here at home.

However, whether how much of an effect it will have and whether it will affect us as much as it might have had are now two big questions. The pleasing thing is we might not be quite as vulnerable to such events as we once were.

Of course, the political turmoil in the Middle East won’t directly effect on Premier Scott Moe’s political fortunes in the Oct. 26 election … or at least, it won’t have the direct impact it might have on U.S. President Donald Trump’s election just eight days later.

Political instability in the Middle East has traditionally had a big effect on something very important to both the Saskatchewan economy and its politics: the price of oil. As of the writing of this column, the West Texas Intermediate price of oil was $62.02 US a barrel; better than both the initial Saskatchewan 2019-20 budget projection ($59.27 US a barrel) and the slightly downgraded mid-year projection ($57.03 US a barrel.)

An increase in the oil price has generally been good for both the Saskatchewan economy and budget revenues, which, in turn, is really good for the political fortunes of the government of the day, but maybe it’s about here where it would be best to be careful about old assumptions. Things are changing in this world and it might even be that the rise and fall of oil prices isn’t quite the big deal it used to be.

To begin with, the oil market instability expected to follow the assassination, and Iran’s retaliatory missile attack hasn’t happened … at least not quite yet. Sure, oil prices increased slightly, but (as of the writing of this) by only a modest 1.5 per cent.

Things could change quickly if oil flow is disrupted; something that could happen if Iran continues its retaliate by things like limiting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persia Gulf. (As suggested earlier, things 10,000 kilometres away have a way of impacting us here.)

But, so far, that’s not been the case and even if it were, there are other factors in play.

For example, if there is a boom in oil prices it will certainly benefit the economy in certain parts of rural Saskatchewan; however, rural Saskatchewan is already firmly supporting the Saskatchewan Party; whether it’s good economic times or not. Politically speaking, it’s unlikely that there will be much effect here.

Of course, the indirect political effect of increasing oil revenue is affording the provincial government the luxury of spending more. That could appease some voters frustrated by 2017 budget cuts, but those frustrated with the Sask. Party administration these past 12 years might not be satisfied by a bit of additional government spending in an election year.

Moreover, an oil windfall isn’t quite the big deal it once was. Much to the credit of Finance Minister Donna Harpauer and the Sask. Party government, the financing of the provincial budget has been rejigged in a more manageable way.

As of the mid-year update of the 2019-20 budget, about half our revenue comes from taxes and only 12 per cent comes from non-renewable resources. Essentially, this has sheltered Saskatchewan taxpayers from things beyond their control, including what’s now going on in the Middle East. After an incident took place on Sunday, January 12th, when the weather outside was incredibly frigid, Kristine O’Brien, the owner/operator of Paws Republic Boarding, Training & Grooming Centre in Martensville, wanted to share information with local residents so if this situation arises again, they know who to call.

The incident that occurred involved a young puppy that had been left outside for hours without any shelter from the elements. A concerned individual felt that due to the cold temperatures, the animal could be in jeopardy.

In situations such as this, Martensville Bylaw can be contacted at (306) 229-6859. If it is after hours or the weekend, Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan can be contacted. “Our local bylaw team is always extremely helpful if there is a concern. They are following up with the people who left the dog out to help educate them,” O’Brien said.

According to the Animal Protection Services website, the Animal Protection Act, 2018 is the law that is in place within the province to protect animals from abuse and distress. This Act states that no person shall cause an animal to be in distress and that no person responsible for an animal shall cause or permit the animal to be or continue to be in distress. Some examples of distress consist of an animal being deprived of food or water sufficient to maintain the animal in a state of good health; deprived of care or shelter; deprived of veterinary care or medical attention; in need of reasonable protection from injurious heat or cold; wounded, ill, in pain, suffering, abused or neglected; kept in conditions that are unsanitary, will significantly impair the animals health or wellbeing over time, cause the animal anxiety or suffering, or contravene the prescribed standards, codes of practice or guidelines; or abandoned by its owner or by a person responsible for the animal in a manner that causes, or is likely to cause distress resulting from any of all of the factors listed.

Some ways to help ensure your pet is comfortable during the bouts of cold weather include not leaving your pet unattended outside. If you do notice signs of distress, bring the animal to a warm place immediately and contact your veterinarian.

If you take your pet with you while you are out and about, do not leave them in your vehicle for long periods. When going for a walk, ensure that your pet is on concrete and asphalt surfaces for short periods of time only and when coming inside, wipe their feet.

Truck Stolen From Local Business January 13, 2020 at 6:03 a.m. RCMP received a call in the RM of Warman of break and enter of a business. A white GMS Sierra 2500 truck was stolen with several tools in it. This is still under investigation.

Saskatoon Police Vehicle Involved in Highway 12 Collision Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Two members of Saskatoon Police Service were involved in a collision at the intersection of Highway 12 and Township Road 380; near Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers; at approximately 3:32am on January 13th. The collision involved a police SUV and a semi-truck and trailer. At the time of the collision, the officers were responding to a report of a stolen vehicle.

The officers were travelling east-bound at the time of the accident and two male officers were transported to hospital with serious but non-threatening injuries. The driver and lone occupant of the semi was not injured.

“We would like to thank everyone for their messages of support and kindness in light of this serious collision,” Saskatoon Police Services posted on their Facebook page.

Later that day, one of the officers involved in the collision was released from the hospital and will be recovering from home, while the other officer remained in the hospital with serious injuries.

Traffic restrictions were in place for several hours as RCMP investigated the cause of the collision and debris was cleared off of the highway.

Excitement is building around Martensville, Saskatoon and surrounding areas for the return of Otowa Restaurant, which will be opening their doors in Martensville this month. The restaurant, which used to be located in downtown Saskatoon from 1995 until last year, will offer a variety of Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and other Asian cuisine.

A definite opening date has not been announced, as renovations are currently taking place; however, owners Mei and Ming Huant are looking forward to serving some unique food options to the community.

The new location for Otowa will be in the location that Pon’s Kitchen used to be located and following some changes, Mei stated that they will be able to sit approximately 40-45 customers and will offer a eat-in or take-out option.

“We decided to move out to Martensville because there are not a lot of Asian restaurants available to local residents. There are no Japansese and sushi restaurants in the community. It is a really nice city and we are excited to bring something new,” Mei said.

Mei is excited to debut a new menu which will offer new items that were not currently offered in their Saskatoon location. The menu will also offer a number of healthy options, and items will be made fresh. “It is a great healthy food option for people to try,” stated Mei. Although Mei is excited about offering new items, the classic favorites will still be available.

“We are hoping that many of our customers from Saskatoon will follow us to Martensville because when we closed down our Saskatoon location, we had a lot of sad people. We invite people to come and check us out after we open and try something new. We just want to be able to satisfy our customers,” added Mei.
