MFD Gearing up to Host Firefit Competition

Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger Members of the Martensville Fire Department are already hard at work planning the Saskatchewan Regional Firefi t Championships that will be held in Martensville during Buster Days weekend June 2nd and 3rd. This will be the fi rst time the event has been held in Saskatchewan in a number of years, so the MFD members are feeling quite honored to have this opportunity. This event, which showcases fi refi ghter’s skills and fi tness levels, is often referred to as the toughest two minutes of any sport. Beginning in 1994 in Vancouver, the event has grown each year and sees active, medically cleared structured fi refi ghters that are 19 and up from Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England and the Middle East. The Championship Finals show is now aired on TSN, OLD & RDS.

There will be 13 locations across the country hosting a competition throughout April up until the Firefi t Nationals & World Championships, which will be held in Spruce Meadows, AB in September 2018. The intense competition can be done as an individual or as a team and consists of a stair climb with a fl ashlight and four foot bundle of hose weighing 42 pounds to the sixth fl oor. From there, participants are required to hoist a 42 pound roll of hose; then descend the tower using proper technique. The next challenge is forcible entry, where fi refi ghters use a nine pound shot mallet to hammer a beam, followed by a 140-foot sprint and a hose advance where they are required to drag a fully charged hoseline 75 feet.

The fi nal challenge is victim rescue where they drag a 165 pound mannequin backwards for a distance of 100 feet. “It is defi nitely something to see. Everyone is competing in their full gear, including our self-contained breathing apparatus. To see how fast some of these members can move is incredible,” MFD Deputy Fire Chief Dean Brooman said.

Currently, the members of the MFD are approaching businesses in Martensville, Saskatoon and surrounding areas seeking sponsorship for the event. “This is a really unique opportunity for some of these businesses because it is not your typical event, so it is a great way to get their names out there and to be recognized in a little bit of a different way,” Brooman stated. There are several sponsorship options available ranging from $5,000 to $500. Businesses sponsoring the event will have the chance to display their logo during the event, as well as numerous other promotional opportunities.

Brooman, who participated in Firefi t early into his fi refi ghting career said, “It was the most brutal physical thing that I have ever done in my life. Way back when I did it, the respected time was under three minutes and now those times are ancient. Some of these members participating, their times are under two minutes and even close to the one minute mark. It is absolutely unbelievable.” Brooman described the feeling of completing the competition was like nothing he had ever felt before and that the personal Photo credit: Firefi t Championships Facebook Page challenge was extremely rewarding. Numerous other members of the MFD were interested in this opportunity, with many having competed in Firefi t at some point throughout their career. “This is something that is recognized throughout North America, if not the world and we knew how great of an opportunity this would be for Martensville to host something like this. It is a perfect tie-in with Buster Days and it will be a huge draw for Martensville and give us a lot of recognition out there,” Brooman added. Cannabis To Be Sold by Private Retailers, Regulated by SLGA

The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) will issue approximately 60 cannabis retail permits to private operators in as many as 40 Saskatchewan municipalities and First Nation communities.

“The federal government has established very aggressive timelines for the legalization of cannabis,” Minister Responsible for SLGA Gene Makowsky said. “Our government is being diligent to ensure the sale and regulation of cannabis in Saskatchewan strikes a balance between public safety and access for consumers. It’s also important to our government that the 40 municipalities and First Nations selected for retail locations have the opportunity to decide whether they want cannabis retail stores in their community.”

The initial allocation of retail store permits will be in municipalities and First Nations with populations of at least 2,500, with larger communities being allocated additional permits.

Eligible First Nations and municipalities will have the option to opt out of having a retail cannabis store in their community if they choose. The fi nal number of retail permits will depend on the number of community leaders that decide to opt out.

Both wholesaling and retailing of cannabis will be conducted by the private sector and regulated by SLGA. Cannabis retailers will be required to establish a standalone storefront operation, with the option to also operate an online store. Stores will be limited to selling cannabis, cannabis accessories and ancillary items. Stores must also have the ability to track and report cannabis inventory to help ensure consumers only have access to safe, legal product from regulated wholesalers.

An independent third party will be engaged to assist SLGA with selecting retail operators using a twophase process. The fi rst phase will be initial screening for fi nancial capacity and the ability for proponents to track and report inventory. Phase two will be a random selection (lottery) of the qualifi ed applicants. Successful proponents will be required to meet ‘good character’ criteria as part of the permitting process.

Specifi c details regarding application criteria, permit licensing fees, application timelines and other associated details will be fi nalized over the coming weeks. A decision on the minimum age for cannabis consumption will be made later this spring.

Wholesaling and retailing of cannabis will be regulated by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) and distributed through private retail outlets.

Communities eligible for cannabis retail sales: Assiniboia, Battleford, Biggar, Canora, Esterhazy, Estevan (2), Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Kindersley, La Loche, La Ronge, Lac La Ronge First Nation, Lloydminster (2), Maple Creek, Martensville, Meadow Lake, Melfort, Melville, Moose Jaw (2), Moosomin, Nipawin, North Battleford (2), Onion Lake First Nation, Outlook, Peter Ballantyne First Nation, Pilot Butte, Prince Albert (2), Regina (6), RM of Corman Park, RM of Edenwold, Rosetown, Saskatoon (7), Shellbrook, Swift Current (2), Tisdale, Unity, Warman (2), Weyburn (2), White City and Yorkton (2).

Cannabis retailers must operate a storefront and may also sell product online.

Cannabis retail stores must be standalone, selling only cannabis, cannabis accessories and ancillary items. Standalone is defi ned as an enclosed business with a separate entrance with separate tills for cannabis sales (if located adjacent to another business).

A two-phase selection process will be used to determine the retail operators in each community.

The process will involve screening for demonstrated fi nancial capacity and the ability to track and report inventory movement through the supply chain. Phase two will be a random selection (lottery) of qualifi ed applicants for each opportunity.

Proponents cannot be selected for more than one retail permit in each community. An independent third party will be engaged to provide oversight to this process.

Government continues to work on other details regarding the impending legalization of cannabis. The retail selection process for cannabis retail permits is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, with the application process beginning later this spring.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has been working with provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as well as Health Canada as they investigate an outbreak of E. coli in romaine lettuce. Although the outbreak is known to be within romaine lettuce, there is still no known cause as to where the contamination originated. So far, approximately 40 people have become ill from E. coli throughout the Canadian Eastern provinces, with romaine lettuce as the believed cause. There has been one death. These individuals range in age from 3 to 85 and 73% of reported cases were among females.

Currently, there is no evidence that provinces in Western Canada will be affected by this outbreak.

The outbreak has been linked to fi ve Eastern Canadian provinces thus far; Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Although no offi cial recall has been issued, it has been recommended that consumers avoid eating romaine lettuce until the cause of the contamination is discovered. Most of the individuals that became sick reported eating romaine lettuce before their illnesses occurred, whether at home or in a restaurant.

A common source of E. coli illness is raw fruits and vegetables that have come in contact with feces from an infected animal. These items can become contaminated in the fi eld by soil, contaminated water, animals or improperly composted manure. Produce can also be contaminated during and after harvest from handling, storing and transportation.

Most strains of E. coli are harmless to humans; however, some varieties can cause illness and can sometimes cause death, although this is rare. The majority of people affected by E. coli will become ill for a few days, and then recover fully. This particular strain is more likely to cause severe illness, especially amongst pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, young children and older adults. Symptoms associated with E. coli illness can include; diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramping, pain or tenderness and nausea and vomiting in some people.

Although it is impossible to know if items have been contaminated by E. coli, some steps can be taken to help avoid the risk:

• Wash hands thoroughly with warm water and soap for approximately 20 seconds, before and after handling produce.

• Unwashed produce, including those sold in sealed bags should be handled and washed thoroughly.

• Avoid cross contamination when preparing foods.

indoor Water Conservation tips • When you want a drink, don’t let the water run until it is cold. Instead, refrigerate a jug of tap water and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t let the tap run when rinsing dishes or washing fruit and vegetables and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Instead, scrape off food fi rst using a spatula. Soak very dirty pans and dishes before washing.

• Run the dishwasher only when it’s fully loaded and save 70-190 litres of water with each load you eliminate.

• Repair any leaks. Turn faucets off fi rmly. Check and replace any worn out fi xtures, washers, O-rings and hose connections.

• Avoid using garbage disposals. Disposals require lots of water to operate properly. Instead, start a compost pile.

• Save as much as 10 litres of water per minute with a low-fl ow showerhead.

• Don’t overfi ll and fi ll less than a full bath. Better yet, you’ll save water by taking a short shower instead.

• Replace an old toilet with a water-effi cient model and save as much as 14 litres of water per fl ush and 70 litres per person, per day.

• Check for leaks in your toilet by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank. Coloring will appear in the toilet bowl if it’s leaking.

Keeping our Pets safe During extreme Cold If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe. temperature guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside tips for a safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the fl oor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws.

snow Clearing- Pathways and Cul de sacs During this winter season, the City of Martensville asks citizens to refrain from attempting to clear pathways and cul de sacs. There are associated risk of damage to trees and grass adjacent to the pathways as well as potential hazards such as rocks or benches.

City Crews will clear cul de sacs in accordance with snow removal procedures. Removing your own snow from the cul de sac can potentially obstruct right of ways, signage, access to valves and utilities, and garbage pick-up.

January 4, 2017 at 12:30 a.m. Police received a complaint of an erratic driver on Central Street in Warman. The caller reported that the car was travelling at a high rate of speed. Police made patrols of the area, but did not locate any vehicles matching the description provided.

January 4, 2018 at 11:15 p.m. Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on

The caller reported that the vehicle was swerving from ditch to ditch. Police attended the location and spoke with the 31 year old male from Regina who was driving the vehicle. He was arrested and taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. He was released on documents for an upcoming court date on impaired driving charges.

There were no injuires.

Police received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence at the 700 block of Reimer Road in Martensville. Police attended and found that an incident on the highway carried over to the residence.

January 6, 2018 at 11:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of a break and enter to a business south of Martensville. The caller reported that someone entered a locked compound and stole a trailer of items from the compound.

January 7, 2018 at 11:25 a.m. Police received a complaint of a disturbance at a church in Osler. The caller reported that a female was causing problems at the church. She left the church before police arrived. The 34 year old female from Osler was located a short time later and spoken to

The caller requested that members attended a residence and check on the 57 year old female resident. The caller felt the resident may have had health issues. Police checked the residence and spoke with the female who was safe and sound.

Kinsmen Club Serving Our Community's Greatest Needs Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville & District Kinsmen Club are a well-known part of the community, taking part in many of the local events, donating to numerous organizations and always willing to step up and help those in need.

Originally founded in 1920, Kin Canada Clubs have become an integral part of communities across the country. Kin Canada is an all-Canadian service organization that consists of men and women volunteers aged 19 and up. The motto of Kin Canada is “Serving the Community’s Greatest Needs”, which they do through hosting and sponsoring events and community service projects.

In 2017, the Martensville & District Kinsmen donated an incredible $45,000. Donations were made to various organizations and clubs such as; The Children’s Wish Foundation, Dalmeny Fire and Rescue for the purchase of a new fi retruck, the Martensville Free Pantry, Prairie Women on Snowmobiles, the annual Kinsmen High School bursary, the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark, Buster Days, Telemiracle and the 574 “Dakota” Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, and more.

Money that gets donated is raised through the countless hours of volunteer time put in by each of the members each year. “All of our members tally our monthly community hours that we work for the Kinsmen and it works out to be approximately 1200 hours annually,” James Dietrich of the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club stated. Some examples of how the Kinsmen raise money or contribute to their communities is by working numerous pancake breakfasts each year, blood donor clinics, contributing their time to various events within the communities where help is required and much more. The Kinsmen Club have often been contacted to help run drink services, work door prize tables, raffl e tables, etc. at local events in exchange for a donation. “People often look at hiring companies or individuals to come work their events, but we are another option for them. With us, the money that is donated to us will go straight back into the community,” explained Dietrich.

One of the newest and most popular events the Kinsmen do is the annual ‘Chicken and Chuckles’ night, which will be held Saturday, February 17th at the North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville. “This year marks our third year doing this and we have three amazing Saskatchewan comedians coming this year that are defi nitely going to make us laugh,” Dietrich said. Last year, a total of 240 people came out to the annual event, and this year, the Kinsmen are hoping to increase that number to 300. Tickets to the event are $25, which includes one basket of wings and entertainment. Proceeds from the event will go towards TeleMiracle 42, which is one of the main events for the Club. Each year, the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club contributes to TeleMiracle by offering their services for all of the transportation required for everyone involved in the huge Saskatchewan event, whether it is in Regina or Saskatoon.

The local Kinsmen Club, which currently consists of 16 members, has been in existence for the past 25 years and throughout this time, they have been a huge contributing factor to Martensville and the surrounding communities that they serve, raising and donating a whopping total of $875,000 over the years.

Dietrich, who joined the Kinsmen approximately four years ago, fi rst became interested in joining as his children were growing older and didn’t require as much time. “I needed to do something and I always thought it was something that I would be interested in. I went to my fi rst meeting and I recognized

what these guys do, and I just knew that it was something that I wanted to be involved with.” Approximately half of the current group consists of relatively new members, which creates a nice balance within the service group.

“It is a new, young group and these guys bring in tons of energy and a lot of great ideas,” Dietrich added.

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

THAN Cities Stabilize Provincial Jobs

The age-old Saskatchewan problem of not having a major urban presence hit home quickly in 2018. It’s an all-toofamiliar story.

Sure, Regina and Saskatoon have become two of Canada’s fastest growing cities in the past decade, becoming bigger, more diverse and more cosmopolitan. But as late starters to last century’s urban boom, our cities lag behind most other urban centres.

Many would argue Saskatchewan does just fi ne as a rural, agriculturally-based province whose economy is underpinned by natural resources.

However, what now separates Saskatchewan from Manitoba and even Alberta may very well be the presence of those provinces’ larger Prairie cities like Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton.

For example, the recent economic downturn across the prairies saw all three provinces shed jobs. But by having larger urban centres with less people directly susceptible to the whims of agriculture and the oilpatch, other Prairie provinces have been able to more quickly stabilize economic job losses. And it may be starting to show.

Again, Saskatchewan is facing its age-old dilemma of more people moving out than moving in. (The reason Saskatchewan population grew to 1,168,000 according to the latest Statistics Canada fi gures based on Oct. 1 numbers, was largely because of births exceeding deaths.)

Why people move from smaller communities to larger ones is no secret to those who have lived in rural Saskatchewan.

Larger urban centres provide amenities that offer more jobs. And the larger a community becomes, the more amenities it is likely to have.

For example, one of the big problems Premier Brad Wall and his predecessors have had in either luring or attracting head offi ce jobs to Saskatchewan is the lack of a truly international airport with direct fl ights to other countries and even other cities in Canada.

Such problems become a double-edged sword when it comes to attracting offi ce jobs. The less head offi ce jobs you have, the less need for major legal or accounting fi rms to serve them.

Why the best and brightest from this province have wound up in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto or Vancouver has every reason to aforementioned opportunities larger cities provide.

Moreover, larger cities also afford those working for big companies with a lifestyle that smaller cities and towns can’t provide.

Even businesses directly linked to agriculture or Saskatchewan’s resource-based economy have a strong preference to be located in bigger urban centres. And sometimes no amount of government incentives for locating head offi ce jobs in Saskatchewan work all that well.

The following is worthy of consideration in light of the New Year’s news that Nutrien Ltd. - the company that’s emerged from last year’s merger of Agrium Inc. and Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. - has started trading on the Toronto and New York Stock Exchanges. It was big new business news, as new Nutrien shareholders got .4 shares in the new company for each common share of PotashCorp they owned and 2.23 shares for each Agrium share.

But the even bigger news in the coming year may be whether our 30-year-old legislation - the one enacted when old Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Crown corporation was privatized - holds up wake of this merger. That legislation required PCS head offi ce jobs remain in Saskatchewan. It worked, but never quite as well as government suggested.

The privatized PCS found ways to dance around that law, maintaining what amounted to a head offi ce in Chicago where Bill Doyle and other PCS offi cials were located. And now with the Calgary-based Agrium big presence in this merger, whether Saskatoon will really be Nutrien’s new headquarters is a legitimate question.

It may be farmers and rural people who buy Nutrien’s products. But when it comes to jobs, it may also be the same old story for a rural-based province like Saskatchewan.

A decade of growth has strengthened our province and allowed our government to make important investments in health, education, infrastructure and quality of life for all Saskatchewan people.

For the past 10 years, our government has been focused on a vision for a strong and diverse Saskatchewan economy that can be a national leader. Our growth plan includes competitive taxes and regulations, innovation, infrastructure and engagement with markets around the world.

Saskatchewan people have built a resilient economy, and RBC is now predicting that our province will lead Canada in economic growth over the next two years. Recovering energy, potash, ag investment and key contracts in China and India are among the reasons for this growth.

Through trade missions and engagement, we’ll continue working to open up markets for Saskatchewan products to help build on a strong, diversifi ed and growing economy.

I’m encouraged by new statistics that show Saskatchewan exporters are leading the nation. Our wholesale trade grew 21% last year, the best in Canada. And thanks to our outstanding entrepreneurs, our wholesale trade is up more than 75% over the past 10 years.

The new year brings new incentive for small businesses to hire more workers and invest new capital here in Saskatchewan. Effective January 1, the amount of income up to which small businesses pay tax at the much lower two per cent small business tax rate moved from $500,000 to $600,000.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s 12 per cent corporate income tax rate continues to be competitive and among the lowest in the country, further enhancing our province’s signifi cant advantages when attracting new investment and jobs.

Also in 2018, Saskatchewan residents will benefi t for an entire calendar year from lower provincial Personal Income Tax rates, which dropped half a percentage point effective July 1, 2017. Saskatchewan Personal Income Tax rates will drop by another half point on July 1, 2019.

Provincial Park reservation Dates announced

A bitterly cold holiday season had many of us looking forward to warmer days. Here in Saskatchewan, many of those days are spent visiting our Provincial Parks.

Seasonal camping – which is offered at a discount from the regular nightly camping – provides an opportunity to secure a campsite from mid-May to the end of August, and even into September at some locations. Due to its popularity, sites are allocated via a lottery system.

You can visit www.saskparks.net to apply for a seasonal site by Thursday, February 1, 2018. The draw to award campsites taking place on Monday, February 5, 2018.

Those who are interested in making nightly reservations can do so starting Monday, April 9. As has been the process for several years now, nightly campsite reservations will be staggered with a registration launch taking place over 12 days.

During a decade of growth, the Government of Saskatchewan invested more than $100 million in upgrades and improvements to provincial park infrastructure.

Projects undertaken include the development of two new campgrounds, upgrading or replacement of service centres, extensive campsite electrical expansion and upgrading, water and wastewater system upgrades, new and enhanced boat launches and new campsite furnishings.

Canada Revenue Agency Announces New Tax Filing Option

On Monday, January 8, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced that they would be taking steps to make it easier for Canadians to file their income tax and benefit returns, no matter the method they choose. This new program will allow the approximately 1 million eligible Canadians to file their taxes by phone this year.

The new automated system, “File My Return”, will benefit Canadians with low or fixed income that is unchanged year-to-year. With this system, they will be able to call in and answer a series of questions and provide some personal information. They will not be required to any paperwork or calculations and will still have access to the deductions, benefits and credits that they are entitled to.

Those eligible will receive personalized invitation letters starting mid-February.

The purpose of this system is to make the system easier and encourage people to file. The File My Return service will be available 21 hours a day, from 6am to 3am EST, 7 days a week, throughout the tax-filing season.

Additionally, CRA announced that those that filed taxes via paper tax forms in previous years will receive a tax package by mail. Canadians who use paper guides and forms will not be required to pick up a tax package at Canada Post, Service Canada or Caisse populaire Desjardins outlet.

“Improving service to Canadians is my top priority. We know that Canadians lead busy lives and doing taxes can sometimes be a challenge. This is especially the case for people with reduced mobility, people who live far from service locations and people without Internet access. The CRA is working to make it easier and simpler to find, complete and file a return. The new services we are now providing are more user-friendly and convenient, especially for Canadians with low or fixed income,” The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue said. This will help all those who file using paper forms. However, to ease the transition to this service, limited quantities of guides and forms will still be available in these locations starting February 26, 2018.

Once quantities are no longer available at these locations, individuals can order them by phone or online. Beginning in 2019, documents will only be available from CRA. Documents are also available to be downloaded and printed online at www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/formspublications/tax-packages-years/general-income-tax-benefit-package.html.

By making filing returns easier and simpler, these services will help millions of Canadians do their taxes.

Canada is once again at the top of the World Junior podium but last Office at Bay #7 - 301 Centennial week’s win against the Swede’s did not come easy to the Red and White. Martensville Messenger outshot 36-28 in the game and thanks to Hart, they were able to take home the gold. Canadian captain Dillon Dube scored the game’s fi rst goal early in the second period but the fl oodgates didn’t open for Canada as they have in the tournament. They looked to improve on their lead when Sweden got into some penalty trouble but ended up surrendering a short-handed goal to Sweden’s Tim Soderlund just past the midway point of the second. From that point on it was deadlocked and the fans in Buffalo were gearing up for an overtime thriller when Canada’s Tyler Steenbergen tipped in a pass from Conor Timmins with just 1:40 to go in the third. Canada would add a late empty netter to seal the deal and bring home Canada’s second gold medal in the last four years.

Sweden’s heartbreak after their continued dominance in the preliminary round was summed up after the game during the medal presentation when Swedish captain Lias Andersson took off his silver medal and threw it into the stands, later stating that the fan wanted it more that he did. As for the bronze medal game it was a bit of a walkthrough for team USA against the Czech Republic.

The States exploded for a six goal second period in a 9-3 rout of the Czechs.

Wild Card weekend in the NFL was indeed wild as the Tennessee Titans came back from a 21-3 defi cit against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Titans scored three unanswered TD’s in the second half to upset the Chiefs but now move on to play the powerhouse Patriots in New England on Saturday. Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons took care of possible league MVP Todd Gurley and the LA Rams 26-13 to move on and play Philly on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the Carolina Panthers fell short of a comeback and watched the New Orleans Saints move on in the NFC division playoffs with a 31-26 victory.

Next up for the Saints is a date with Case Keenum and the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The fi nal game of Wild Card weekend was not the most exciting by far and was more of a defensive game. The Jacksonville Jaguars snuffed out the Buffalo Bills fi rst playoff appearance in 17 years with an ugly 10-3 win. The Jags will defi nitely need to step up their game this weekend against Big Ben and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

President’s Report

The Junior Program at the Martensville Curling Club has really taken off. We have 40 youngsters registered for this years’ program which is very good to see.

The fi rst night went well with all kids leaving with a big smile on their faces as they learned the fundamentals of the sport. Some of these kids have curled before so they were very good at helping out the younger ones who had their curling shoes on for the fi rst time ever.

As for the other club activities, we are hosting a Men's Bonspiel Jan 19-20 and this will be an "old school" pick a prize spiel. Also, Feb 9-11 the Women's Bonspiel will run. This is always a popular event and a lot of fun. Our last spiel will be the open spiel which is slated for March 10-11.

This one again will be "pick a prize" format.

Our club is also seeing improvements and one area in particular is the lounge. We now have 3 big screen tvs and hi-def programming. Our club has also brought on board a beer sponsor for our evening draws and provided to us a new draft beer system. This has proven to be quite popular and is also seeing others in from around the community who are not even members. Big Al's catering downstairs is also making appetizer platters for everyone upstairs so our lounge is a great place to get together with friends, even if you aren't a curler. We also have free WIFI this year. We are looking to plan a few events on the weekends like Super Bowl and UFC parties. Advertisers in the community have also shown excellent support of our club and this year we have the most advertising banners on the walls and on the ice than we have ever had before. It is nice to see community involvement and it is greatly appreciated.

The Martensville Curling Club is hosting their annual Junior League to start the new year every Sunday night from January 7 to March 18. Dave Zukewich is coordinating the juniors and is very pleased with the turn out. They have reached their capacity of 40 curlers and have a waiting list. The curlers are ages nine and up and vary in ability from beginners to advanced.

The fi rst two weeks they focus on skill development and practising these skills. The next weeks they play mini four end games where they practise skills as well as learn strategies of the game. The last week, they hold a fun skills competition and end off with a pizza party. It’s a fun way to expose these young curlers to the game of curling.

With so many young curlers on the ice, there is a need for many volunteers. The club would like to thank the following volunteers for helping with the junior program. Cara Zukewich, Don Miller, Rocky Marcinkiw, Kathie and Laverne Derksen, Scott Remeshylo, Mike Steckler, and Leigh Solomon.
