Business Excellence Awards Expected to Sell Out Once Again Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The fourth annual Warman Martensville Business Excellence Awards (WMBEXA) will be taking place May 3rd at the North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville.

Each year the spectacular gala seems to gain more and more attention within the region and provides an excellent opportunity for local businesses to showcase themselves as well as network with other businesses within the area.

Award options include; Business of the Year, New Business of the Year, Customer Service, Community Involvement and Non-Profit of the Year.

This year, nominations for WMBEXA were on par with previous years; however, according to Jaimie Malmgren, Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, this year they saw an increase in customers and clients nominating businesses they support. “That is something that we really want to see, getting the entire region involved in nominating those businesses and showing them that they are noticed and appreciated for all of the hard work they do,” Malmgren said.

It seems since the event first began, not only residents within the region, but businesses are becoming more aware of WMBEXA. From nominations, applications, sponsorship and more, the event continues to grow. Currently, there is a waiting list for sponsorship opportunities as businesses have seen the benefit to becoming involved in the event. “We never imagined that this event would become what it has even in the first year. It took us by surprise, but we are thrilled that it has grown to what it is today. Each year, we try to grow it in one way or another to keep building it and continue to make it a really spectacular celebration for businesses within our region. This year is no different as we have some more things up our sleeves that we are looking forward to,” Malmgren explained. The sold-out event will see approximately 350-400 people attend this year.

Prior to Christmas, businesses received an in-person visit from either Malmgren, or a member of the PSCC board to notify them of their nomination. “That is literally my favorite time of the year. The reactions that you get from the businesses are amazing; lots of surprises, big smiles and sometimes even tears,” said Malmgren.

Following the nominations, the application period will take place from January 1st to February 4th. Businesses that have been nominated, or wish to self-nominate can download application forms from the PSCC website.

On January 10th, the PSCC will be hosting a WMBEXA luncheon which will feature the previous year’s winners and provide information on their experience, the application process, the benefits of applying and the value that they see from the event.

“In addition, we have reached out to some of our previous judges and asked for some feedback on what they see from their perspective. The goal is to be able to provide as much information as possible to help the applicants put together the best application they can because there is a lot of competition out there,” added Malmgren. “It is all about what you put into it and spending ten minutes on it won’t earn you a spot as a finalist. It is really a great opportunity to take a step back and look at your business and see if there are things you can be doing differently, what you are doing right and to get some input from your staff and customers as well.”

Malmgren wanted to express how valuable the luncheon is for nominees and encourages all business owners to either attend, or send someone on their behalf. For those that are unable to attend, you can also contact the PSCC for more information. Businesses that have not been nominated, but would still like to submit an application can also attend, or businesses that are not eligible to apply this year can attend to learn more about the process in years to come. “By attending the luncheon, you get an understanding of what a spectacular evening it is. The spotlight really shines on these businesses and you get a ton of visibility and promotion through it. We have found that it has been incredibly valuable to small businesses.”

Additionally, WMBEXA provides an excellent opportunity for businesses to network with one another. “It is a room full of movers and shakers, so if you want to be a part of it, it is better to get your tickets sooner than later because we always sell out!”

The Warman Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received 157 calls for service from December 31, 2018 to January 7, 2019.

Impaired Driver Stopped on Highway 12 January 1, 2019 at 3:00 a.m. Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller advised that the vehicle was swerving on the road and having difficulty staying in the driving lane.

Police attended the scene and arrested a 19 year old male from Cudworth who was driving the vehicle.

He was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. He was released a short time later for an upcoming court date on Impaired driving charges. There were no injuries.

Vanscoy Accident Ends in Tragic Death January 2, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Police received a complaint of a three vehicle accident on Highway 7 near Vanscoy.

Police, EMS and Brad’s towing attended the scene. A male youth passenger in the vehicle from Saskatoon was pronounced deceased at the scene. A female youth driving one of the vehicle’s was transported to hospital by STARS air ambulance for treatment of serious injuries. The drivers of the two other vehicles were not injured.

Cause of the accident is under investigation.

Vehicle Hits Ditch on Highway 12 January 3, 2019 at 7:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 12 near Martensville. The

caller reported seeing a vehicle drive off the exit ramp on Highway 12. Police attended and spoke with the 69 year old male driver. He was not injured. The vehicle was driveable. There were no charges.

Possible Impaired Driver Stopped in Martensville January 5, 2019 at 1:05 a.m.

Police were on patrols in Martensville when they came across a possible impaired driver in Martensville. The 27 year old male driver from Martensville had consumed alcohol but was not impaired. Their vehicle was seized for 14 days due to a number of previous suspensions. There were no charges.

Police Investigate Mail Box Theft January 3, 2018 at 7:00 a.m.

Police received a complaint of a number of mailbox’s damaged in the RM of Corman Park. The caller advised that someone broke off a number of locks on the mail boxes and taken the mail from inside. Investigation into this matter is ongoing. ***Police have received a number of complaints of damage to mail boxes in rural locations*** Items Stolen From Car in Martensville January 4, 2019 at 6:55 p.m. Police received a complaint of theft from a vehicle in Martensville. The caller reported that they were parked at a business in Martensville for a short period of time when someone broke into their vehicle and stole a number of items.

Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

PEOPLE Minor Injuries Reported in Corman Park Assault January 1, 2019 at 3:15 a.m.

Police received a complaint of an assault at a party in the RM of Corman Park.

The caller reported that they had been assaulted and had minor injuries. Police spoke with a number of witnesses that were at the party. After an investigation, a male youth from Saskatoon was charged with Assault with a weapon. There were minor injuries.

Charges Laid in Martensville Assault January 3, 2019 at 11:10 a.m.

Police received a complaint of an assault at a residence in Martensville. The caller reported that they had been assaulted by a male in the residence. Police attended the residence and arrested the 22 year old male in the residence and released him on documents and conditions for an upcoming court date on Assault charges. The 22 year female in the residence was not injured.

Keeping our Pets Safe this Winter

If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason.

Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable.

Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws. At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

Christmas Tree Collection Site Winter FunFest 2019, February 2nd

A Christmas Tree Collection Site has been set up next to the North Ridge Centennial Community Centre where collected trees will be part of the bonfire and fireworks display during Winter Funfest.

Please Note: Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, string, garland, tree stands and any other decorations. Do not dispose of artificial trees or other yard and household waste (only live Christmas trees will be accepted). Do not bag or wrap your tree (including recyclable tree bags). Please do not deposit any Christmas trees at the Yard Waste Composting Site (10th Ave. S). Please do not stack or place trees in a manner which may cause them to easily topple over, or in an area which impedes vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

Teen Killed in Tragic Highway 7 Accident

Warman RCMP responded to an accident that took place on Wednesday, January 2nd on Highway #7 at the west exit of Vanscoy that claimed the life of a seventeen year old male passenger when a pickup truck collided with a transport truck.

Matthew Stronach, a student at Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon, was in the passenger seat of a pickup truck that was waiting to turn left when the vehicle was struck by a truck with a trailer, which sent the pickup into the eastbound lanes of the highway where it was hit by a double-trailer semi.

His 17-year-old girlfriend, who was the driver of the truck was taken to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon with undetermined injuries.

Police stated that the investigation will continue to determine the cause of the collision and whether any charges will be laid.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures - this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Nancy Heppner Will Not Seek Re-Election

Nancy Heppner, Saskatchewan Party MLA for Martensville-Warman, announced that she will not be seeking re-election for the 2020 Provincial Election. “To my constituents I want to say – thank you. Your support and generosity over the years is truly humbling.”

Heppner stated, “The constituency of Martensville-Warman is a great riding. To the next Saskatchewan Party Candidate, I would say to listen to your constituents. They know what their communities need; go advocate for those things”

Heppner was first elected during a by-election in 2007 for the then constituency of Martensville, taking the seat of her father, the late Ben Heppner. She was successfully re-elected in the 2007, 2011 and 2016 Provincial Elections. In the most recent election, she won her seat with a strong majority at just over 79% of the vote.

“I saw rural Saskatchewan being ignored under the NDP.” Heppner said “I wanted to run to make a difference in the lives of my constituents and advocate for the things that they needed – better/safer roads and more schools. We have achieved that.”

Heppner served in several cabinet roles including as the Minister of Environment, Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Water Corporation, Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and the Water Appeal Board, Minister of Central Services, Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission, Minister responsible for the Lean Initiative, Minister of Highways, Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation, and Minister of Energy and Resources, and Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission.

Heppner stated, “What I’ve enjoyed the most is speaking with school groups. I think it’s important for students to understand that other people make decisions that affect them every day and that it’s important to be educated and involved (regardless of the level of government).”

“I would also like to thank both the former Premier, Brad Wall, and Premier Scott Moe for their confidence in me and giving me the opportunity to serve is so many different roles. It has been an honour to serve under both of these great leaders.”

Council Discusses New Zamboni, Snow Removal Agreement and New Education Opportunities at First Meeting of 2019 Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville City Council held the first Committee of the Whole for 2019 on Tuesday, January 8th. The meeting began with information from Leah Bloomquist, Director of Corporate Services regarding a gift acceptance policy for the City. Bloomquist explained that last year, the City contracted with DCG for a feasibility study for a new recreation facility. Currently, the City does have a Donation to Municipal Government Policy in place; however it is limited to projects approved by Council. An updated version was provided that now includes gifts/donations to the City, and is not to be confused with sponsorships. The item will be brought back to next week’s meeting for formal approval.

Next, Ted Schaeffer, Director of Recreation & Community Services spoke to Council regarding the Zamboni at the Martensville Sports Centre. The current one is nearing the end of its life cycle and is no longer reliable or cost effective due to the need for maintenance and repairs. Replacement is scheduled for this year, and Administration recommended a five year lease. When ordered, a new machine will take approximately 8-9 months to be delivered; therefore Schaeffer is recommending that a new Zamboni be approved for this month in order to be available for the 2019-2020 season. The total cost would be $21,000/year. Council will decide on this matter at the January 15th Regular Council Meeting.

Schaeffer also presented Council with information regarding Great Plains College (GPC). GPC contacted the City regarding available space within the Civic Centre for educational programming beginning September, 2019. The proposed schedule would still allow the City to continue utilizing the space for evening programming. The current term would take place from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 for total revenue for the City of $25,200, with the option to renew. This will be brought to next week’s meeting for formal approval by Council.

Two names have been submitted by residents to the City of Martensville as part of the Civic Naming List for streets and parks; Giles Saulnier and Maurice Hyde. For more information about the process, or if you would like to nominate someone, contact Martensville City Hall.

In December, Director of Infrastructure & Planning, Matt Gruza brought information to Council regarding an agreement between the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure (MHI) and the City of Martensville when it came to the sanding and clearing of snow for the new Highway 12 interchange. Currently, the City of Martensville is crossing the interchange in order to maintain one mile of Main Street (Township Rd 384) west of the interchange. Gruza stated that City of Martensville crews will be able to “respond quicker in dealing with snow and ice buildup than MHI crews, as well as periodically monitor conditions throughout the day.” The new agreement would include an increase in Priority 1 roadways to be cleared, which will add time to the overall snow-removal process. If approved, the snow priority map will be posted online at www.martensville.ca.

Council then discussed the Multi Material Stewardship Program. As a municipality, when Martensville reports the quantities of paper products diverted through recycling, a portion of the levies paid by producers comes back to the City. In 2017, the City of Martensville received $38,000 through this program. Council was asked for direction on this matter, which will be brought back for a later date for formal approval.

MLA Report With Nancy Heppner Optimistic Outlook for 2019

A new year is a time for optimism and renewal – and here in Saskatchewan we see encouraging signs that our best days are still to come. Despite the challenges facing our energy sector, people continue to see Saskatchewan as a great place to live, work and invest.

In addition to the 16,000 new jobs over the past year, which gave us the best rate of job growth in western Canada, Saskatchewan grew by 3,841 people in the latest quarter. This represents the 50th consecutive quarter of population growth – the longest sustained period of population growth in Saskatchewan since quarterly records started being kept in 1971.

Saskatchewan’s record growth has strengthened our province and allowed your Saskatchewan Party government to make important investments to improve health, education, infrastructure, and the overall quality of life for all people who call Saskatchewan home.

There is always more to do. For example, we have heard that too many rural areas still have poor cellular coverage and slow internet service – so we’re working to fix that.

Improving Wireless Coverage

The Wireless Saskatchewan initiative is our plan to improve wireless services, with Phase 2 of that plan addressing 100 rural communities that had no cellular coverage or fringe service at best. The deployment of small cellular sites will improve the level of service by next year. High-speed internet and cellular connections are incredibly important to all of us, and this initiative will greatly benefit many residents, farms, and businesses who call rural Saskatchewan home.

The first 50 towers will be completed and operating by March 31, 2019 with remaining new small community towers functioning by March 31, 2020.

Preparing for 2019 Camping Season

At the end of the holiday season, many of us are starting to plan – or at least think about – our summer getaways.

Starting in April, visitors will be able to reserve campsites for in Saskatchewan provincial parks on a new and improved online reservation site. The upgraded site enhances the overall visitor experience and increase online services, such as seasonal bookings.

This year, seasonal campsites will be moved to the online reservation system. Due to high demand for seasonal sites, a queuing system will be used to ensure a fair process. For seasonal campsites, customers will only be able to book for one person in one campsite with one payment. Reservations for seasonal campsites will open Tuesday, April 2 at 7:00 a.m.

Group campsites will also be added to the online reservation system this year. Starting on Thursday, April 4, sites can be booked online year-round or through the call centre up until October. School and youth groups will continue to book by calling the parks directly.

Nightly reservations for 2019 campsites will open at 7:00 a.m. Monday, April 8. Staggered launch dates and a queuing system will be implemented again to help provide the best user experience possible during reservations. Explore The Magic Of Winter In Saskatchewan Provincial Parks

This winter, families and friends can explore the cool side of Saskatchewan’s provincial parks, with a night of enchanting holiday lights, hot cocoa around a toastywarm campfire or snowshoeing through forests of frostcovered trees. The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is offering a variety of winter events in provincial parks that the whole family can enjoy.

“Saskatchewan Provincial Parks are beautiful destinations to visit every season of the year and winter is truly no exception,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “These upcoming events are a unique way to experience winter in our parks while enjoying fresh air and perhaps trying something new. I am pleased many local communities and organizations are teaming up to provide these wonderful opportunities in our parks for people of all ages.”

On Saturday, January 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Echo Valley Provincial Park will once again host a Snowshoe in the Park event, with freshly groomed trails and snowshoes provided. Guests can also enjoy a campfire cookout with hotdogs, hot cocoa, coffee and tea in the park’s brand new visitor centre. Fun and educational demonstrations on camping, winter survival and safety will be on site, as well as door prizes and other giveaways. With more than 200 visitors in attendance at last year’s snowshoeing event, this year is expected to be another success with the help and generosity of local businesses.

Families looking for a unique winter experience can visit Last Mountain House Historic Site on Saturday, January 26 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for an afternoon of snowshoeing, fiddlers, furs and trapping, crafts, historic characters and fun interactive demonstrations and activities.

Guests can try their hand at baking bannock over an open fire.

In Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, visitors can experience Winter by the Lake on Saturday, February 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. where staff and guests will set out on a cross country skiing and/or snowshoeing adventure along the trails at Anglin Lake. The afternoon will be complete with hot beverages, a campfire and crafts available in the warm-up shelter.

A starry night candle-lit ski, perfect for couples and families, will take place in Moose Mountain Provincial Park on Friday, February 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests can enjoy cross-country skiing on the 3.2 km Riding Academy Trail, lit with soft candle glow, along with hotdogs and hot cocoa around the campfire.

Carbon Tax a Political Fight in 2019

It didn’t take long for the great carbon tax fight to start in 2019, although it can argue that it never really ended. It has just carried on from 2018 and years previous.

The difference now is 2019 is a federal election and the carbon tax is an issue that both of the major Liberal and Conservative combatants see as a winner for them. So batten down the hatchets, folks. We are in for a lot of politicking on the carbon tax.

The nonsense started rather early on New Year’s Day, with federal Liberal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna tweeting the following: “This year, it will no longer be free to pollute anywhere in Canada, as we put a price on pollution to cut emissions. Our resolution is to stay focused on you, and every Canadian who works hard to make tomorrow better than yesterday, and this year better than the last.”

It was a message filled with as many half-truths as political sanctimony. For starters, if the Environment Minister was so determined to put a cost on pollution, she might start with a federal levy on the city of Montreal for the sewage it is dumping into the St. Lawrence River. At the risk of adding to the already-too-excessive cynicism out there, one doubts federal Liberals are as truly determined

to make polluters as they claim. If they were, logic dictates they wouldn’t quite be so eager to offer Canadian families rebate so they can simply keep their gas tanks filled and, thus, keep polluting.

At the very least, it suggests that Liberals true first priority is re-election. They know that taxing voters without a rebate would put their electoral chances somewhere at the NDP’s unelectable level. Sadly, they also know full well that sacrificing a few Western seats in Alberta and Saskatchewan where the bulk of oilproducing jobs are, is likely to have little impact on Liberal chances of securing a second-term that will be determined by votes down east.

That said, is it any more cynical than what we have heard from Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives who have yet to put forward a discernible plan to combat GHGs because ignoring an issue is always easiest?

Yet it seems Conservatives have few problems playing footsy with the climate-change deniers who choose not to accept the fact that GHGs are a major cause of manmade warming of the planet? But, like McKenna, Scheer and the Conservatives have wrapped their carbon tax position around the notion of “fighting for the little guy”, the people who control their politicians fate when they go to the polls later this year.

Regina’s Giant Tiger discount grocer and took square aim at the extra 4.65 cents a litre we will be paying on gas when the carbon tax comes into effect in April.

Scheer offered no credence to the Liberal government rebate that will be especially beneficial to the working poor. Some might argue that this is a natural extension from past Conservative arguments of protecting the livelihood of oil-industry workers that Trudeau and the Liberals are roundly ignoring, but there was something cynical about Conservatives driving their Lexuses in the Giant Tiger (a chain in which a Conservative MP’s family owns) for this announcement.

New Democrats, in particular, were already noting the above.

After all, the Conservative record on supporting the working poor hasn’t exactly been great and while Scheer and company do deserve credit for standing up for laid-off oil industry workers, it’s hard not to notice that big, profitable oil companies are still among the biggest financiers of the federal Conservatives. Expect to see a lot more of this, folks. It is an election year.

Martensville Resident Prepares for Debut of ‘Monday Night’ Play Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville resident Todd Devonshire has been hard at work preparing for the debut of his play ‘Monday Night’, which will take place January 10-13 and January 1720 at The Refinery, located at 609 Dufferin Avenue in Saskatoon. Devonshire was chosen

by Live Five Independent Theatre for a spot that is reserved each year for up and coming Saskatchewan playwrights.

Having always had a love for music and sports, ‘Monday Night’ combines Devonshire’s passion for both. The play features the night that music legend John Lennon was killed and the announcement of his death was made during Monday Night Football.

The play will feature nine characters and three intertwining stories about a reporter that was at the hospital that night, musicians that emulate The Beatles and about Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford; the Monday Night Football announcers who shared the news with millions of viewers. “Music and sports for me are the one-two punch, which is what really attracted me to this piece. You have these two worlds of football and music colliding for one of the most dramatic moments in our history,” Devonshire explained.

Not only does the play include a winning combination of sports and music, there is also an element of history as the play takes place in 1980, where compared to nowadays, the speed in which information was made available took much longer.

“That night we lost something powerful. I wanted to do a historical piece that shows that one person can really change the world and when we lose hope of that, we all lose. I think what I really want people to come away with, is that no matter how insignificant you might seem, or how small one action may seem, one person can really change the world and Lennon did that for millions,” said Devonshire.

The NHL has come to its approximate half-way point with every team right around 40-42 games played out of the 82 regular season games. The Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs are currently tied as the top Canadian clubs in the NHL so far this season. Both teams are having incredible years but just can’t keep up with the League-Best Tampa Bay Lighting who have a 10-point cushion on top spot in the NHL.

The Winnipeg Jets are hot on the heels of the Flames and Leafs as they sit just two points behind them as the league’s 5th best team so far this season. Right now those are the only Canadian teams that sit in a playoff spot but with still half the season remaining, there are a few teams on the edge that will have some time to make a playoff push.

Both the Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens are one point out of a wild card playoff spot in their respective conferences. The Habs are 6-4 in their last 10 while the Canucks are 5-5. Both teams are going to need more consistency or at least put together a winning streak down the stretch in order to be a part of the post-season.

The Edmonton Oilers are another team that has kind of disappointed this season but they do still have a very good chance at making the playoffs. They sit just two points back of the final wild card spot in the West and will need to rely on more than just Conner McDavid to take care of their scoring. Especially when their goaltending is as shaky as it is right now. The Oilers haven’t won a game in which their opponents score more than one goal since December 11th. In order to be a playoff team you need to be able to win those high scoring 5-4 type games and can’t rely on your goaltender only allowing one goal.

This league is too good for those things to happen. The Ottawa Senators know exactly how good this league is. The Sens are 11th in the league in goals for with an average of over 3 goals a game! That is a great stat until you see that they are dead last in goals allowed with 172 goals against this season.

Even deeper into that stat is you can’t even really blame the goalies! The team is allowing an NHL worst 37.1 shots per game and their penalty kill is also the worst in the league with Ottawa killing off just 73.8 percent of their penalties. After all that it’s not hard to understand why they have lost eight in a row and sit dead last in the NHL. The team would have to do a complete turnaround to even have the slightest chance of making the playoffs and it just doesn’t seem like that is going to happen.
