Martensville Schools Put Focus on Mental Health Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

According to the World Health Organization’s website, “Mental health is defined as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stress of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” This was one of the main topics discussed during the annual multi-school Student Community Council (SCC) meeting that was held in Martensville on Thursday, February 1st.

Both representatives from the SCC and administration from Venture Heights Elementary School (VHS), Valley Manor Elementary School (VMS), Lake Vista Elementary School (LVS) and Martensville High School (MHS) were in attendance for the meeting. Special guest speakers included School Resource Officer Constable Nave and School Counsellor Patsy Ispolito. The theme for this year’s meeting was around student mental health and student anxiety and what each school can be doing to help students and to educate parents. “These meetings are a great way to come together and find some common fronts and find ways to work together and unite our schools intentionally. We choose not to work in silence, but instead work together,” VHS Principal Ron Biberdorf commented.

“As administrators, we want to work hand and hand with parents outside of school because ultimately, what is going on outside of school comes back to affect us and what we are doing inside of school,” VMS Principal Garth Harrison added.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The meeting kicked off with conversation about fundraising, school goals, parent engagement and how to get them involved and other topics before moving into the main focus, which was on a positive mental health in students. Constable Nave then discussed the impacts of social media and how it can affect children negatively, causing them anxiety and stress. Research has proven that the more time spent on social media, the more likely an individual is to suffer from mental health issues, such as; decreased self-esteem, anxiety, depression/depressive symptoms, addiction, feelings of inferiority and more.

During his presentation, Constable Nave also explained how the creators of software and apps for these devices use human psychology in order to keep users addicted, comparing the “typing awareness indicator” on an iPhone to that of a spinning slot machine, generating anticipation and keeping users interested, which increases the likelihood of one being addicted to a cellphone. Another topic was the stress of Snapchat and the amount of stress caused by the need to ‘keep a streak alive’ with their ‘friends’. “They may have 300 friends on their phone, but how many of those would they share their deepest secrets with? We need to make them aware of these things because students do open themselves up on their phones and it can take them down a bad path and we want to make parents aware of those kinds of things. If we can do that through our SCC, we believe we are providing a service that will in turn benefit us back at the school because we will have mentally healthy kids coming to us each day,” Harrison said.

An additional negative impact of social media is that with such an abundant lack of face to face contact, it is creating a lack of empathy within children and is leading to an inability to read faces, understand body language and pick up on human emotions. Harrison also added that with printed word, things are often misinterpreted, leading to unintended altercations.

Bullying was another subject that was discussed, with focus on how bullying has now taken a turn for the worse through social media. “The reality is that an extremely high amount of bullying goes on in social media and that is where empathy is diminished because people don’t seem to have the empathy that they have on social media that they would have if it was face to face, so the level of things that get written that would be considered bullying is so much farther ahead,” Biberdorf noted.

HOW CAN PARENT’S HELP?

One major piece of advice taken from the meeting by those attending was ensuring that kids do not have access to Wi-Fi, tablets and cellphones at night. Constable Nave shared a story about a Grade 2 student that woke up at 2am and played on a tablet until his father found him at 6am. “How often are things like this happening? They have access to the world at their fingertips and there are a lot of negative and dangerous influences in that,” VHS Vice-Principal Nicole Lacoursiere said.

Nomophobia (no+mobile+phone+phobia), is the irrational fear of being without your mobile phone or being unable to use it, and it is a real issue, facing not only children, but all ages. Phone addiction is a legitimate addiction and it will not be easy for parents to just take it away. It is going to be a fight and it is going to be a struggle; however, the administrators within the schools agreed that if there was one piece of advice to pass along to parents, it would be to limit access to their devices at night.

Additionally, since parents behavior is a model for their child’s behavior, they recommend being cognitive of your own mobile phone usage in front of your child. “If a parent is on their device all the

time, they are modelling for their kids that it is okay for them to be on theirs as well,” Harrison advised.

WHAT ARE SCHOOLS DOING TO HELP?

This school year, VHS initiated a ‘cellphone free’ school, and has seen many positive impacts on students by doing this.

school year. “We are working towards consistency within the schools and taking the device out of their hands to take that stress of social media away during the day and instead providing learning devices. Venture Heights has seen great results in that, thus leading us to where we are going to go next year,” Harrison said.

VHS made the transition to a cellphone free school after visiting MHS for the Grade 8 orientation last year and students were asked to hand their phones in. “From there, we started thinking about how we weren’t really helping the high school by allowing our kids to have cell phones, so we worked with Const. Nave, the SCC and the staff to make this happen. We think it has been a really positive change, and we now see kids talking to each other more, and enjoying each other’s company more,” explained Biberdorf.

With hopes that the increase in real human interaction within the schools will extend outwards into their lives outside of school, the challenge is taking the information learned and sharing it within the student’s homes via social media, newsletters, blogs, media and other outlets.

The annual meetings are not only held to inform the SCC for them to pass information along to parents, but also for the school administrators to learn from and make modifications within their schools for the betterment of the students, parents and community as a whole. “We aren’t here dumping information on the SCC, we are here learning and thank them for sitting beside us and learning with us,” Biberdorf stated, adding that parents have been getting together for decades saying, “kids these days, here’s the problem with them”, and the issue that is affecting children today is anxiety in many different forms.

The amount of knowledge that today’s youth has when it comes to technology is astounding, and often, you will see a toddler with the ability to unlock a device, take pictures, play games, watch movies and more. “Our kids know so much more typically than what the parents do and they know how to navigate the system. I think we are all guilty of saying, “I can’t see my kid doing that” and that is one of the worst things that we can tell ourselves as a parent and if we think that, then we are naïve in thinking that they aren’t curious. Kids are curious, and they are looking and searching, they are facing peer pressure. There are so many factors that come into play,” Lacoursiere said.

HEALTHY MIND PLATTER

During the meeting, School Counsellor Patsy Ispolito shared information on “A Healthy Mind Platter”. On this mind platter, which was created by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, there are seven essential mental activities that can be used to optimize mental health and create an overall well-being. It is recommended that individuals engage in each of these seven areas for a time suitable for them each day. In doing this, it can create a balanced mental health and help to strengthen your brain’s internal connections, as well as your connections with others and with the world around you. The seven areas consist of:

The Healthy Mind Platter for Optimal Brain Matter WHERE TO FIND HELP

“A question a lot of our families ask is when your kids come home and they are struggling with some of these things, what can they do to help, and that was something that was brought up. Our job at school is how do we support our kids and teach our kids and support our families to develop those resiliency skills, those coping skills and that platter of mental health so that they don’t reach a tipping point,” Lacoursiere said. The schools all agree that it is important to provide information to parents on where to access information and to find support locally and to work with students when they are younger, and continue throughout the grades, so that as they get older, they have the skills in place to cope with those anxieties and to ask for help if they need it.

Time In – taking the time to quietly reflect internally, to focus on feelings, thoughts, sensations and more, can help to better integrate the brain.

Down Time – it is healthy to give the mind the time to wander and relax without any specific goal, which allows the brain to recharge.

Play Time – being creative and spontaneous and enjoying experiences helps to make new connections within the brain.

Connecting Time – connecting with others and with the world around us can activate the brains relational circuitry.

The schools each took the advice from the “healthy mind platter” and now plan on using that knowledge to better educate students and parents on how to promote a positive mental health. With plans on taking the information and using it at their next SCC meetings within each individual school and looking at ways to not only build parental knowledge, but how they can provide activities to promote more face-to-face connections. Having activities such as the Christmas Evening and Hot Dog BBQ’s at VMS and the Pancake Breakfasts and Spring Festival at VHS, the community elementary schools are looking at what more they can do to meet the needs of their students and the families of the students.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays please have your vehicles off City streets.

Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a nonposted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Keeping our Pets Safe During Extreme Cold If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws.

At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

Parking the Wrong Way - Traffic Bylaw The Bylaw Department regulates and enforces the City’s Traffic Bylaw. Vehicles parking on the wrong side of the road is a violation that has been occurring on a more frequent basis.

The Martensville Traffic Bylaw 17-2015 states: 3e(vii) No person shall park a vehicle on any street to the left of centre (wrong way).

Enforcement of this bylaw will be increased in response to resident complaints. The penalty for parking the wrong way is $120. Please be a responsible and safe driver.

Parking on the wrong side of the road is an unsafe practice, it is also against the law.

Sasktel Bringing infiNET To Four More Communities In 2018 - The Fastest Network in Saskatchewan with Infinite Potential

Rush Take a Close One Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The Rush played host to Vancouver Stealth on Saturday night after coming home from a 13-10 win Friday against the Colorado Mammoth. The team came directly to the field from the previous night so they needed to find their legs. After coming out with four quick goals, they had a 7-3 lead over the Stealth at the half. They sat back a bit in the third, letting Vancouver back in as they tied it 9-9. The Rush scored one with seconds left in the third and scored the only goal in the fourth to narrowly take the 11-9 win.

The Rush is in first place with a 7-1 record. Tyler Carlson was between the posts as the team gave Evan Kirk the night off. Carlson turned away the first 10 shots he faced tallying 39 saves. Eric Church led the Rush with seven points. He had two goals and five assists. Mark Matthews had two goals and four assists for six points. The two teams will have a rematch next weekend as the Rush travels to Vancouver.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Martensville Messenger story between the NFL’s greatest dynasty and a team that lost their MVP candidate in week 13. The Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz went down with a torn ACL after posting a league best 11-2 record and many thought the Eagles hopes at a Championship were over. Little did they know back-up quarterback Nick Foles was ready to put the team on his back. Foles put up impressive numbers in the Playoffs as he led the team to the Super Bowl.

Many thought the long-time back-up was no match for the 40-year old phenom and possibly the greatest quarterback of all-time, Tom Brady. Brady and the Pats have been a powerhouse ever since he stepped on the field. Since 2001, New England has been to the big game eight times and compiled five championship titles. The game was off to a great start as the Eagles marched the field but only managed a field goal and the Patriots matched them with a field goal of their own. It wasn’t until 2:34 remaining in the first quarter that the Eagles struck first with a 34-yard TD pass to Alshon Jeffery but they missed the point after to make the score 9-3 after one. The second quarter is when teams settled in and traded touchdowns with the Pats making a field goal and the Eagles scoring another TD with 34 seconds left.

Philadelphia took the lead into halftime with a score of 22-12.

Justin Timberlake rocked the halftime show with a tribute to Minneapolis native Prince and the teams got back at it.

The Pats have come back from bigger deficits before. If you remember last year Brady lead New England to the biggest comeback in NFL history after being down 28-3 against Atlanta. They scored early but the Eagles countered five minutes later. Brady hooked up with Chris Hogan for a 26-yard TD to make the score 29-26 for Philly after three quarters.

The Eagles only managed a field goal on their first drive of the final quarter and the Pats responded with a TD to take the lead for the first time in the game. Philly then marched the field and scored a touchdown with 2:21 left in the game but missed the 2-point convert to give the Eagles a 5-point lead but also leaving Brady two minutes to march the field. Brady and the Pats were making their way downfield when Brady was stripped of the ball and Philly recovered. Foles got the Eagles down to the 36-yard line for Philly to seal the win with a field goal. Final score 41-33, and the first Super Bowl in franchise history for the Philadelphia Eagles. Nick Foles was voted Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns.

Winter FunFest Entertains Despite Frigid Weather Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The annual Martensville Winter FunFest was held Saturday, February 3rd at the North Ridge Community Centre and surrounding outside areas. Although the weather was somewhat frightful, a large number of local residents took advantage of the numerous activities being offered through the event.

Unfortunately, due to the cold weather, the popular sleigh rides were unable to be offered; however, there were a wide array of other options available for both indoor and outdoor fun. Some of the most popular activities included; the bouncy houses, Singing with Sylvia, Kenni the Clown, Elsa & Olaf, Balloon Funn and of course the tree burn and fireworks, which concluded the community event.

Although the event was offered free of charge, donations were being accepted with all proceeds going to Martensville KidSport™. A total of $991.10 was raised, which will be used to help local children who could otherwise not afford to participate, and be able to get involved in sports.

“It was a great Saturday despite the cold weather. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who bundled up and braved the cold to volunteer to help us put this event on. This was my first year running the event, and I am already so excited for next year and have lots of new ideas,” Karly Russin, City of Martensville Program Coordinator II, said.

Parenting - An Opportunity for Growth Written by: Deb Mooney BSW RSW

Traditionally, parenting styles were classified into three categories; Authoritarian, Permissive and Authoritative, and now a fourth has been added, Neglectful or Uninvolved. The style in which we parent typically come from our own experiences growing up. We tend to model the way we were parented, or sometimes we veer so far away from how we were parented we end up on the other side of the spectrum.

Authoritarian can best be described as an approach that requires obedience without question. There may not be a reason for family rules beyond the exercise of control. The focus is on punishment (retribution) rather than discipline (teaching).They can be status oriented and use shaming and withdrawal of love to control their children.

Children growing up this way learn they are not capable of trusting themselves to make appropriate decisions and they can be perfectionists, afraid to fail or make a mistake. They may turn to self-destructive behaviors as teens as they feel they are “good enough.” They may also stuff down the emotional part of themselves as there is no place for emotion or free thinking in an authoritarian household. Attachment issues may be present due to a lack of attunement to the needs of the child as opposed to the needs of the adult.

Neglectful or uninvolved parenting means exactly what it says, neglectful, uninvolved, detached and emotionally disengaged. Children may react with the same behaviors seen with authoritarian parenting as the result of feeling “invisible” and not having a chance to engage as their authentic self with parents, for fear of rejection.

Attachment issues may be present from a lack of attunement as well as a lack of consistent response to a child’s distress.

Permissive parenting is characterized by a lack of rules and expectations. This may be due to not wanting to upset their children or the idea that children learn best through natural interaction of their environment. Permissive parents are commonly very loving, warm and nurturing but may present more as a friend rather than an authority figure. As opposed to shaming their children they may use manipulation or coercion and will stay away from any authoritative direction.

The most balanced approach to parenting is the Authoritative approach. This style encompasses structure and boundaries that are flexible and grow with the age-related needs of the child. There is age appropriate give and take of ideas between parent and child. Clear communication where the child is heard and their emotions and ideas are validated are practiced. There is a gradual shift in the parental role to more of a mentor and guide as children age into their teen and young adult years. This parenting style promotes strong attachments and healthy autonomy in children/youth/adults since its goal is to engage with the child, where they are at developmentally and emotionally.

As previously mentioned this balanced approach is not easy to implement when you were not raised in this style of parenting yourself. If raised in an Authoritarian or uninvolved home how do we celebrate and accept the child we have when we were not allowed to celebrate and accept authentic selves as children? If we can recognize that disconnect, we can choose to do things differently. Again, this is not always easy as we tend to fall back into what we know when we are under stress, are frustrated or feel inadequate ourselves. The biggest gift you can give your child is the gift of acceptance of self and your child. Put away the work and the electronics and take your child’s lead. Listen to your child with interest and without judgment or criticism. Make time not to be busy! Be present. If you are finding yourself struggling, it may be a perfect time for some personal exploration. Sometimes our children can also be our best teachers.

Parenting is about raising and celebrating the child you have, not the child you thought you’d have. It’s about understanding your child is exactly the person they are supposed to be. And, if we are lucky they might be the teacher who turns you into the person you’re supposed to be too. Until next time...The Counselling Corner.

The Martensville & District Kinsmen Club will be hosting their third annual Chicken & Chuckles event on Saturday, February 17th at the North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville. Since its inception in 2016, Chicken & Chuckles has grown in popularity much to the delight of the Kinsmen Club. Last year, the event brought out 240 attendees, and this year the group is looking to increase that number to 300. Those that have attended in the past are quick to purchase tickets early, knowing that they will be in for an evening full of laughter. “This year marks our third year doing this and we have three amazing Saskatchewan comedians coming this year that are definitely going to make us laugh,” James Dietrich of the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club said.

Tickets for the event are $25 and will include entertainment and the first order of wings. This year, Chicken & Chuckles will be hosted by Clayton Kroeker of CRUZ 96.3, and will include headlines Myles Morrison and Jody Peters.

Proceeds from the event will go towards TeleMiracle 42, which will be taking place March 3rd and 4th at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina. Once again, the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club will be donating their time to provide all transportation services for the event. Each year, the local Kinsmen transport all of the stars, crew and Kin volunteers back and forth from the airport or hotels to the event centre.

In addition, they also do all of the donated food pick-ups and deliver back to the event centre to feed all of the volunteers.

As intriguing as Saskatchewan politics tends to be, exciting leadership races are a rarity. So let’s take one last ballot-by-ballot look at that Saskatchewan Party leadership race that saw Scott Moe beat out Alanna Koch by 1,165 votes on the fifth and final ballot.

First Ballot: Total ballots cast, 17,159. Alanna Koch, 4,529 votes (26.39 per cent); Scott Moe, 4,483 votes (26.13 per cent); Ken Cheveldayoff, 4,177 votes (24.34 per cent); Gord Wyant, 3,696 votes (21.54 per cent); Tina Beaudry-Mellor, 226 votes (1.32 per cent), and; Rob Clarke 48 votes (0.28 per cent).

Less critical than the expected demise of Clarke, who had declared he was out of the race shortly after the ballots were printed, was how this ballot set the stage for the entire race.

Gord Wyant’s healthy 21.5-per-cent total signified it would be a close race with four candidates. But by being fourth on that first ballot and with Clarke’s and BeaudryMellor’s totalling less than the 481-vote difference between Wyant and Cheveldayoff, the die was cast. Wyant would eventually follow Clarke and Beaudry-Mellor off the ballot.

The other critical factors on the first ballot were how close Koch and Moe were (46 vote apart) and how far Cheveldayoff was behind Koch (352 votes) and Moe (398 votes).

Second Ballot: 17,156 votes cast: Koch, 4,533, (26.42 per cent); Moe, 4,495, (26.2 per cent); Cheveldayoff, 4,202, (24.49 per cent); Wyant, 3,698, (21.56 per cent), and; Beaudry-Mellor, 228, (1.33 per cent).

The lion’s share of Clarke votes (25) went to Cheveldayoff - unsurprising, because Clarke endorsed Cheveldayoff before pulling out of the race. Moe got 12 Clarke votes compared with four for Koch, narrowing Koch’s lead to a mere 38 votes. Both Wyant and Beaudry-Mellor got just two Clarke votes, signalling the end to a disappointing run for her. As disappointed was Wyant, who could not gain the momentum he would need to stay in the race.

Third Ballot, total votes cast, 17,143. Koch, 4,598 votes (26.82 per cent); Moe, 4,544 (26.51 per cent); Cheveldayoff, 4,221 (24.62 per cent), and: Wyant, 3,780 (22.05 per cent).

Wyant did get the largest share (82 votes) of Beaudry-Mellor’s 228 votes, but it wasn’t enough to sustain his campaigning.

Interestingly, Koch received 65 votes from the only other woman candidate while Moe got 49 BeaudryMellor votes. That actually and temporarily widened Koch’s narrow lead over Moe to 54 votes. Cheveldayoff only got 19 Beaudry-Mellor votes - not surprisingly, because their policies conflicted.

Fourth Ballot, 14,989 votes cast: Moe, 5,980, (36.43 per cent); Koch, 5,591, (34.06 per cent), and; Cheveldayoff, 4,844, (29.51 per cent).

It was this ballot that caused the entire race to change, as Moe’s 54-deficit, third-ballot deficit behind Koch quickly turned into a 390-vote lead. Moe became the first to crack the 30-per-cent barrier in march to the needed-to-win 50-per-cent-plus-one.

Why did this happen? Moe picked up a whoppin’ 1,436 of Wyant’s 3,780 votes. Wyant had signalled during the campaign that he likely worked best with Moe. His voters took heed. Koch did pick up 993 Wyant votes (compared with the 623 votes Cheveldayoff added from his Saskatoon MLA colleague).

But with 728 Wyant votes not redistributed because they only voted for the former justice minister on the preferential ballot, it was enough to turn the tables.

Fifth and final ballot, 14,989 votes cast: Moe, 8,075, (53.87 per cent); Koch, 6,914, (46.13 per cent).

Moe sealed the deal by receiving a massive 2,095 of Cheveldayoff’s 4,844-fourth-ballot votes. This was likely because Chevelayoff and Moe shared some common social conservative views on issues on abortion rights.

Koch only received 1,323 Cheveldayoff votes less than the whopping 1,426 Cheveldayoff that only voted for him, causing their votes not to count on the last ballot.

Saskatchewan’s new Premier, Scott Moe, recently chaired his first Caucus meeting at the legislative building. Under his leadership, our entire team is united, strong, and ready to get to work, stand with Saskatchewan, and secure a second decade of growth.

Over the last 10 years, Saskatchewan welcomed over 160,000 new people. This era of hope, optimism and hard work brought over 60,000 new jobs to our province with our economy, on a per capita basis, growing more than anywhere else in the country.

Saskatchewan is consistently the number one or number two Agri-food exporter among the provinces and the recent grand opening of the new Agri-Food Innovation Centre in Saskatoon will help expand development and commercialization of even more Saskatchewan-made products.

As we look to the future with optimism, we are reminded of how far we’ve come and the reasons why we pursue growth in the first place. We don’t pursue growth for the sake of growth, we pursue it because it allows us to invest in people and a better quality of life for all in Saskatchewan.

When Saskatchewan had good financial fortune, our government chose to make the largest debt repayment, income tax cut and property tax cut in Saskatchewan history. Families have saved thousands and taxpayers have saved over $1.5 billion in interest payments.

Today we have a Aaa credit rating, the highest rating possible, the second-best debt to GDP ratio in Canada and $1 billion less operating debt since 2007.

The dividends of growth have given us the ability to create and enhance new income supports for lowincome seniors and those living with disabilities; to build a new hospital to support those with mental health needs; and to finally build a dedicated Children’s Hospital for Saskatchewan.

Growth has helped build new schools and health facilities and has supported front-line workers by hiring 750 more doctors and 3,400 more nurses. It has also helped us take surgical wait times in Saskatchewan from the longest in Canada to now among the shortest.

In 2012, our government along with community partners, helped bring STARS Air Ambulance to the province. This critical investment was made possible thanks to a strong and growing province that Saskatchewan people have worked hard to build.

Police attended the location and found the vehicle. They spoke with the 54 year old female from Duck Lake who was driving the vehicle. She was not impaired, but was issued a ticket for failing to have a valid drivers license. There were

Drug Pricing Initiative To Provide Millions In Savings For Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan residents will soon benefit from lower prices on generic drugs. A new national generic drug initiative will result in $6 million in savings in the first year and up to $50 million in savings over the next five years for the Saskatchewan Drug Plan.

Savings for patients and employers are expected to match or exceed those achieved by the provincial government.

Through the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA), provinces and territories have developed a new initiative with the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA) to significantly reduce the price of some of Canada’s most commonly prescribed generic drugs. “We know medicine is expensive, and our government is committed to providing Saskatchewan residents with the best value for the important drugs they rely on,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “In addition to benefitting the public, it benefits the province as well. The savings we realize will help our public drug plan provide coverage for new and innovative drugs, and increase the plan’s sustainability.”

As of April 1, 2018, the prices of nearly 70 generic drugs will be reduced by 25 to 40 per cent, resulting in overall discounts of up to 90 per cent off the price of their brand-name equivalents.

Generic drugs included in the initiative are used to treat a variety of conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression.

The initiative also includes a commitment from generic drug manufacturers to continue bringing new generic drugs to the Canadian market and ensure a stable supply of generic drugs across the country.

People NOT Wearing Seatbelts – How is This Still a Thing?

As hard as it is to believe, there are still some people who don’t wear a seatbelt.

Police reported more than 3,700 offences for failing to wear a seatbelt last year. This is in spite of Saskatchewan’s seatbelt law being 40 years old, countless TV ads with crash test dummies flying through windshields, and vehicles that buzz or ding annoyingly when passengers don’t buckle up.

Seriously. How is this still a thing? Buckling up is the number one thing you can do to protect yourself while behind the wheel. To help drive that point home, February’s Traffic Safety Spotlight is on seatbelts and car seats, and police across Saskatchewan will be looking for people not wearing a seatbelt, wearing one improperly, or not having children properly secured in the vehicle.

“Bucklng up takes only a couple of seconds and dramatically reduces your risk of death or serious injury in a collision,” said Penny McCune, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “Even if you’re driving at non-highway speeds, a collision with another vehicle or object will cause your body to fly forward, directly into the steering wheel, windshield, or another passenger.”

Think you can just brace yourself? You can’t. Coming to a sudden stop at 50 km/h turns a 70 kg person into the equivalent of a 1,400 kg projectile. It’s the same impact as falling from a four-storey building. (To see more excuses for not buckling up debunked, see our backgrounder: “Seatbelt Excuse Smackdown!)

While most people do wear seatbelts, the small amount of people who don’t are highly overrepresented in traffic deaths. In 2016, 27 per cent of people killed in vehicle collisions in Saskatchewan were either not buckled up or improperly restrained.

Drivers are responsible for ensuring that all passengers under the age of 16 are buckled up, and can be ticketed for each unrestrained child in the vehicle. If you're caught not wearing a seatbelt or with an unbelted passenger, you'll face a stiff $175 fine and lose three safety rating points.

You can also be ticketed for wearing a seatbelt improperly. For the seatbelt to protect you as it should, ensure the lap belt is pulled tight over your hips, not your abdomen.

The shoulder belt should fit snugly over the middle of your shoulder and across your chest, and not be tucked behind you.

Have a little one travelling with you? As child safety seats can be complicated, parents and caregivers are invited to attend a free car seat clinic to learn how to properly install the seat into their vehicle and ensure their child is in the appropriate seat for their size and age.

SGI recommends these tips to keep you and yours safe: • Always #BuckleUp before driving or riding in a vehicle.

• Make sure the shoulder belt fits snugly over the middle of your shoulder and across your chest.

• Don’t let children under 12 and under sit in the front seat of a vehicle.

• Put blankets and coats over child seat straps – too much bulk under the straps means the seat can’t work properly.

• Remember that you should only be able to fit one finger between the harness straps and the child’s chest.

• Get the right fit. Visit an SGI car seat clinic or book an appointment with a car seat technician in your community.

Lake Vista students worked together to bring the small screen to the gymnasium this week as students built and then participated in their very own live version of Angry BirdsThe Video Game. Grade 2 students created the characters in class. The Grade 7 and 8 classes then organized the material and volunteered to be group leaders for each Physical Education class. Whale Sharks Around the World Submitted by Dean Johnston

Inhaling deeply, I ducked below the water and frantically pulled myself down the mere few metres I could manage in my severely limited time frame. Levelling myself out and getting turned, rather awkwardly, in the proper direction, I proceeded to stare intently into the murky blue of the ocean. With my mediocre ability to hold my breath already stretched near its limit by the strenuous descent, I briefly wondered if I should start heading back up when, alarmingly, there it was. An enormous shadow floating toward me with menacing grace, impossibly massive, made even more so by the optical distortion of the water.

A sudden twinge of self-preservation began bubbling to the surface of my psyche, as it only now began occurring to me that I had purposely put myself directly in the path of the largest fish in the world. Before I truly had time to panic, however, it was already level with me, silently gliding past my wide eyes and involuntarily air bubbles of fear, completely forgetting everything but this colossal creature passing close by, including the importance of holding my breath.

Swimming with whale sharks is undoubtedly one of the world’s great wildlife experiences, one that can be found on the bucket list of virtually every avid snorkeller, scuba diver and marine life enthusiast on the planet. They are the largest nonmammalian vertebrate in the world, averaging around 10 metres long, but reportedly reaching as large as 18 metres and weighing up to 40 tonnes. Thankfully for us, however, they are essentially harmless, using their mouth filter to feed mainly on plankton.

Of course, considering their mouths can be large enough to swallow a petite family of four and their tail alone could easily be mistaken for a runaway train car, these encounters cannot be considered entirely risk-free. As long as you follow the rules regarding proximity, though, and don’t get carried away angling for an exciting Instagram close-up of their 300 rows of tiny teeth, even puny humans typically have nothing to fear when sharing the water with these gentle giants. There are many different places around the world where it is possible to snorkel with whale sharks, but as they are nomadic you need to find not only the right place, but also the right time. We snorkelled with them in Donsol Bay in the Philippines, where sightings are practically guaranteed during March and April. Between June and September, Isla Holbox near Cancún is the closest place for most Canadians to find a relatively sure thing. However, there are a number of other places around the world that also boast reliable whale shark experiences: The Maldives - year-round, although avoid rainy season from May to September Gladden Spit, Belize - March to June ABOVE: Our Spotter Koh Tao, Thailand - March to May, September to October Ningaloo Reef, Australia - March to June

Most whale shark excursions are limited to swimming and snorkelling, which is certainly awe-inspiring enough, but Mozambique - June to January there are also a few select destinations where certified scuba divers can enhance the experience with more underwater time.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador - June to December Whale shark diving is possible in the Galapagos Islands, Australia, more or less everywhere in the Indian Ocean, and even West Papua, Indonesia - August to October occasionally off the Baja in Mexico. However, most experienced whale shark divers cite Gladden Spit in Belize as the number Mafia Island, Tanzania - October to March one place to spend some quality time underwater with these majestic beasts. Imagine: nothing but silence, tranquility, and the Baja California, Mexico - November to May brief exhilaration of being frightened into accidentally urinating in your rented wetsuit. Fabulous.

Five Things 1. Whale sharks are not whales, simply sharks that look like whales. And, trust me, they quickly get tired of explaining it to people.

2. The riding of whale sharks is strictly forbidden, even if you manage to stay on for the full eight seconds.

3. Whale sharks only eat plankton, which I suppose is why they didn’t seem even remotely tempted when I offered to share half my Snickers bar.

4. If you find yourself accidentally swallowed by a whale shark, the first thing you’ll want to do is have Gepetto help you start a fire because, as we all know, stomach fires lead to life-saving sneezes.

5. To maximize your whale shark experience I recommend training yourself to get by on just five to six really long breaths per day.
