Pie in The Face For TeleMiracle at VHS

The pie in the face fundraiser was a great success at Venture Heights school raising almost $400 to go towards Telemiracle.

Students brought in money and put it towards the teacher they wanted to see get pied in the face. Ms. Issit was in the lead for the first two days then Mrs. Thiessen had the lead Thursday morning but by Thursday afternoon the official winner was Mrs. Heit. She was pied in the face on Friday at an assembly.

Thanks for being such a great sport Mrs. Heit and great fundraising Venture Heights. We raised over $1200 for Telemiracle this year with our various fundraisers.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures - this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Water Line Freeze Ups

If you have an interruption of water service to your home you may have a water-line freeze up.

Though there have been no reports of freeze-ups to date, if you experience a waterline freeze-up, or any other interruption in service, please call (306) 931-2166 to report your issue.

If this happens outside of regular business hours, please follow the prompts to be transferred to the emergency after-hours contact. Thank you for your cooperation!

The Warman Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police attended 126 calls and 79 traffic charges were laid during the past week..

TRAFFIC

Complaint of Impaired Driver Leads to Charges On January 28th at 8:20 pm a call was received of a 28 year old male driving in Martensville impaired.

Members made patrols and located the vehicle. The driver was charged with impaired driving.

Two Vehicle Collision on Main Street January 30th at 1:42 pm a two vehicle collision occurred on Main Street in Martensville. Both vehicles were driveable.

Fail to Stop at Intersection Results in DUI Charge On January 31st at 2:30 am members were following a vehicle in Warman which failed to stop at an intersection and slid through. The vehicle was

stopped and the 38 year old female was found to be impaired. Charges have been laid.

No Injuries in Single Vehicle Rollover Near Warman On January 31st at 7:42 am members were called to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 11 just outside of Warman. There were no injuries. Road conditions were a factor in the accident.

38 Year Old Male Taken to Hospital After Overdose On January 29th at 9:30 am members attended to a residence in Martensville where a 38 year old male had overdosed. He was taken by ambulance to hospital in Saskatoon.

31 Year Old Charged with Impairment After Attempting to Steal Vehicle On February 2nd at 1:12 am a call was received of a possible stolen vehicle, leaving the Adobe Inn in Martensville and possibly heading back to Saskatoon.

Members located the vehicle.

The 31 year old male driver of the vehicle was found to be impaired and charged.

Weather Disrupts Annual Winter Fun Fest Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville hosted the annual Winter Fun Fest event on Saturday, February 2nd. With numerous activities planned both indoors and outdoors for all ages, Mother Nature had a different plan in mind. Due to inclement weather conditions, most of the outdoor activities had to be cancelled; however, area residents could still participate in many fun activities inside the North Ridge Centennial Community Centre. “Winter Fun Fest was a success once again this year. Lots of people came out to participate in the indoor activities and it was very encouraging to see so many families come out and enjoy the event,” Karly Russin, City of Martensville Program Coordinator II said. Although the air had a bite to it, the popular tree burning and fireworks continued as scheduled; however few residents braved the cold to attend.

“We would like to thank everyone that came out to take part in Winter Fun Fest and a big thank you to all of our sponsors that contributed to this event. It can be tough relying on the weather to cooperate, but in the end, we had a fun day and look forward to next year’s event,” Russin added. A total of $1200 was raised through donation at the door for the Martensville KidSport program.

Tapping Their Way To TeleMiracle Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

A group of local women are coming together to do their part for the biggest fundraiser in Saskatchewan. TeleMiracle 43 will be taking place this March and at 2:07pm on Sunday, March 3rd, ‘The Ville Tap Troupe’ will be performing on stage.

The Ville Tap Troupe was established in 2017, and consists of a group of women from Martensville and surrounding communities. Initially consisting of 7 dancers, the group has grown in size to now include over 25 members that come together weekly to get out of the house, meet new people, move, dance and just enjoy each other’s company. The ladies meet at Bravo Dance Company (BDC) in Martensville and under the creative direction of BDC owner/operator Meagan Barabash, have tapped their way to the TeleMiracle stage.

The group auditioned for a spot on the TeleMiracle stage this past November, and was ecstatic to find out that they made the cut. “There are so many amazing acts that come out to audition, so we thought that we would give it a shot, and if we didn’t make it, then at least we tried. Finding out that we will be performing on the TeleMiracle stage was so exciting for all of us,” Kari Dean of ‘The Ville Dance Troupe’ explained.

Consisting of women in a range of ages and of dance experience, Dean continued to state that since inception, the group has grown immensely in size; however, not all of the women are comfortable performing at TeleMiracle. Those taking to the stage consist of; Allison Adamus, Allison Winchester, Carolynn Chow, Jessica Penner, Jolene Odnokon, Kalicia Chorney, Kari Dean, Lindsay Cockrum, Meagan Barabash, Rachael Strozen, Tammy Sarich and Tina Funk.

Leading up to their big performance, the group is organizing a ‘3D Fundraising Event’ that will be held at BDC Studio at 800 Centennial Drive North on February 10th.

The event will offer a variety of options for those attending to participate in such as macramé, wine/water glass painting, a silent auction, exclusive merchandise, TeleMiracle Helping Hands, fun exercise options, dance and a chance to chat with the dancers. “Group classes might not be for everyone, but there will be other options available for people to contribute. There may be some people that are unable to contribute during TeleMiracle in March, so this is a great way to donate to this amazing cause and it is right in your very own community,” Dean said. TeleMiracle donation boxes are also on-site at Bravo Dance Co. as well as Soul Power Fitness in Martensville.

Both macramé and the glass painting will take place from 7pm-9pm. From 7pm7:50pm, Centergy with Tammy Miazga will be available and from 8pm-8:45pm, you can take part in Kettle Bells with Stacey Tillmans. At 9pm-9:30pm, there will be a Ballet Booty and Event Wrap Up. To register for any of the classes offered, visit ‘The Ville Adult Tap Troupe’ on Facebook and click on the provided links. Prices for the classes range in price from $15 - $30 per class with all proceeds going towards the group’s goal of raising $1000 for TeleMiracle. Each year, Martensville High School puts on a three night dessert theatre that is performed by students and each year, those that are lucky enough to purchase tickets prior to the event being sold out, is astonished at the caliber of talent that takes the stage.

This year’s performance was ‘Little Women’ and once again did not disappoint. The talented cast embraced their roles perfectly in order to portray the beloved characters from the classic novel. The March sisters, played by Katherine Daku (Meg), Grace Flegel (Josephine), Avery Smith (Beth) and Greta Strueby (Amy) came together perfectly to showcase the bond of sisterhood. The audience could feel the love felt between the sisters and the heartbreak that came following the death of their dear sister Beth. Flegel seemed to be at ease as she seamlessly portrayed the immensely independent Jo, who took it upon herself to be the “man” of the house while her father, played by Lucas Silbernagel, was away at war.

Tori Fehr, who portrayed Marmee, the girl’s mother, exuded a natural aura of maternal care for each of her daughters. The love and kindness that came from the entire family unit, including Hannah, the servant of the house played by Kierra Marshall, was obvious. The family looked at Hannah, not just as the help, but as a member of the family that they both loved and respected.

Emma Ens, who played Aunt March brought several bouts of laughter from the audience as she seamlessly portrayed a character far beyond her years. The same can be said for each of the cast members, as they each embraced their roles perfectly and made the audience quickly forget that they were in fact high school students.

The time and care that was put into each element of the performance was apparent from the costumes, the beautiful set, and the delicious dessert that was provided by Della Muench and the Home Economics 30 class.

Director Micah Robinson dedicates countless hours to each annual performance and it seems after each year, it is hard to imagine that it would be possible to maintain such quality; however, the cast, crew and everyone else that contributes, ensure that they bring their A game to the stage.

When our cattle industry was finally showing signs of strength, a cow with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) shows up and we suddenly lose our foreign beef markets.

The U.S. elects a protectionist president and we suddenly have trouble selling our pipeline steel into American markets and we are all too familiar with tariffs on our wheat or potash or the problem with getting our crude oil to tidewater because of a lack of pipelines.

Sometimes it goes beyond international commodity trade. In a world where technology crosses borders faster than any commodity ever could, we are increasingly seeing foreign communication giants integrated into every aspect of our lives.

In fact, we often don’t know how integrated until there is a controversy, which seems the case with SaskTel’s decade-long relationship with China’s Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.

The U.S Department of Justice last week levied charges against Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who had been detained in Vancouver for extradition. Meng, her company and U.S. and Hong Kong subsidiaries have been charged by the Americans on 13 counts that included conspiracy, bank fraud, obstruction of justice and money laundering.

This all came three days after Canadian Ambassador to China, former Federal Liberal Cabinet Minister John McCallum, was fired for suggesting Meng might have a good case against her extradition to the U.S. Allegations, so far, suggests otherwise.

The whole affair became a significant international incident with the Chinese accusing the Canadians of racism and detaining Canadian businessmen in what many see as retaliatory measures; however, it isn’t the first time concerns have been raised about Huawei’s business practices. Richard Fadden, former national security adviser to the prime minister, suggested in a recent Globe and Mail article that “the evidence for banning Huawei from 5G continues to pile up. The article noted previous changes again Huawei in Poland while New Zealand, Australia and Britain were all experiencing reluctance at Huawei’s participation in either next-generation mobile data or core operations.

In Saskatchewan, SaskTel and Huawei have had significant business relations since 2010 when then-SaskTel president Ron Styles and then-premier Brad Wall travelled to China to sign an initial $28-million deal. That deal has led to a seven-year deal for the testing of next-generation wireless broadband technology in rural Saskatchewan.

In fact, the Chinese company has done approximately $200 million with SaskTel and the province since 2010, including a signed 2016 deal with the University of Regina to use the telecom’s technology.

SaskTel chief technology officer Darryl Godfrey has described the relationship as a positive one and argues that ending the business relation would create a “significant competitive disadvantage” in rolling out SaskTel’s 5G networks. This hasn’t placated the concerns of many, including NDP Opposition leader Ryan Meili.

Meili last month wrote to Premier Scott Moe demanding a review of Huawei dealings with SaskTel. “We (don’t) have enough scrutiny being paid to what’s happening right here in Saskatchewan,” Meili said. “It’s important that we ask for a higher level of scrutiny on that relationship.”

Although political opposition is making hay off the Hauwei concerns, it won’t be all that easy for SaskTel to simply cut ties. As small teleco in the highly competition world of telecommunication, SaskTel’s decade-long relationship with Huawei emerged out of a need to find a competitive advantage.

It helped provide services in an area like rural Saskatchewan where others wouldn’t be eager to provide services.

What SaskTel is now left with is a complex mess.

Sometimes, this is simply the reality. We may seem isolated here in Saskatchewan, but it’s difficult to escape messy international trade and business relations.

Helping Saskatchewan Cut Red Tape

Modernizing regulations and cutting the red tape is a priority of the Government of Saskatchewan. Unnecessary regulation and red tape costs business, residents and the governments millions of dollars and thousands of hours in lost time every year.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) recently recognized Saskatchewan for its ongoing leadership in red tape reduction by setting clear targets as well as measuring and reporting the regulatory burden.

In 2017-18, regulatory modernization efforts were forecast to achieve $132.9 million in savings over the next 10 years—across government and Crown corporations.

The Government of Saskatchewan has also introduced the ‘Help Cut Red Tape’ web page, which is an easy, practical way for entrepreneurs to submit their red tape headaches directly to the government and have them addressed.

Saskatchewan’s efforts to modernize regulations and reduce red tape have earned our province the CFIB’s highest A grade in its 2019 Red Tape Report Card.

Effective red tape reduction also means addressing inter-provincial regulatory irritants. Saskatchewan actively participates as a member of the Regulatory Reconciliation and CooperationTable, as part of the Canada FreeTradeAgreement.

Saskatchewan and Ontario are also working with industry to identify opportunities to remove red tape for businesses selling goods or services across Canada.

The NHL is back into the regular season after the All-Star break and back in full swing as a few teams returned from their mandatory bye week. With the season about 2/3 of the way finished here is how the Canadian teams are sitting in the NHL. The Calgary Flames are second in the NHL standings behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Flames have a record of 34-14-5 record for 73 points and sit atop the Western Conference.

The Winnipeg Jets are right behind Calgary, sitting second in the West and third in the overall standings. Winnipeg is on a 3-game win streak and own a 34-16-2 record for 70 points. Next up in the Canadian standings are the Toronto Maple Leafs who sit third in the East and 7th overall. They have been on a slide as of late with a record of 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. The Leafs are just one point ahead of the Montreal Canadians who have 64 points and are in the 8th spot in the league standings. The Habs are on a roll right now with a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games. The final Canadian team sitting in a playoff spot is the Vancouver Canucks. They have a two point lead over the Colorado Avalanche for the last Wild Card spot in the West with a 24-22-6 record, good for 54 points and 18th overall in league standings. The team who is seeing their playoff chances slowly slip away are the Edmonton Oilers who have a 3-5-2 record in their last 10 games and have lost five games in a row. The Oilers recently fired their GM Peter Chairelli in hopes that would turn things around for the team but it just hasn’t happened yet. Edmonton is just three points out of a Wild Card spot but the Oilers will need to completely turn things around in order for them to have a shot at the post-season. Then there are the Ottawa Senators, last in the league, and losers of four in a row. The chances of the Sens making the playoffs are basically gone but they haven’t been officially eliminated from contention.

What has been known as the biggest sporting event in North America took place once again over the weekend. The 53rd Super Bowl was in Atlanta on February 3rd between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick appeared in their 9th Super Bowl in the last 17 years and were looking for their 6th Championship ring. This game however was less than spectacular and was mainly a defensive battle. Jared Goff and the Rams managed just three points in the lowest scoring game in Super Bowl history. The final score was 13-3 for the Patriots with the only touchdown coming in the third quarter on a 2-yard rush from Sony Michel. That play from the two yard line was the only offensive play inside the red-zone (25 yard line or closer) in the entire game. New England receiver Julian Edelman was named the Super Bowl MVP after an outstanding game racking up 141 yards on just 10 catches and all of them coming at desperate times for the Pats. Speculation has begun once again if 41-year-old Tom Brady will return for another season but the G.O.A.T. doesn’t seem like he ever wants to stop playing football.

Martensville Tumblers Bring Home Medals

as Martensville’s Tumblers to six local gymnasts who Martensville Messenger Meet on January 27th. attended the Rosetown Invitational Gymnastics Brynn Franko, Elizabeth Henderson, Brooke McManus, Rebecca Braun-Pederson, Adelyn Janis and Sophia Leu from Tumblers Gymnastics in Martensville competed in the Junior Olympic 1 and 2 categories, kicking off their 2018-2019 competition season. The athletes compete in beam, bars, vault and floor events. All six gymnasts achieved personal bests and came home from the event with medals. Ten gymnasts from Tumblers will compete February 8th to 10th at the Marian Invitational in Saskatoon.

Tumblers Gymnastics is based out of Martensville on Centennial Drive North.

Mark Kurmey is the head coach for the club that is in its fifth season. The club has around 100 members with some taking the recreational route as well as competitive.
