Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation Credits Success to Local Support Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation (PSSF) will be hosting a Love of Learning Fundraising & Recognition Reception on Thursday, February 13th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Martensville High School. This event, presented by Lakeview Insurance Brokers costs $25 per ticket, or a corporate table for $250.

PSSF was created in 2014 as a way to encourage and facilitate community and corporate support and involvement in public education. “The funds raised through this charitable foundation are used to enhance learning opportunities for the students of Prairie Spirit School Division,” Kari Dean, Fund Development Manager for PSSD, explained.

Numerous events have been held since 2018, all of which are designed to help create awareness, recognize partners and donors, highlight and showcase the success of the students and assist in raising funds for future student learning initiatives.

Not only will this particular event help raise funds, but those attending will also be treated to some student musical performances, refreshments and desserts prepared by students, networking with businesses, students and educators, a keynote presentation by David Conway, silent and live auction items and can hear stories about the Foundation’s impact in the community and on the students.

“David Conway is an elite level mindset coach, mentoring hundreds of people worldwide and impacting thousands of lives through his workshops, webinars, social media platforms, and training programs,” Dean explained. According to information provided by Dean, Conway has studied personal development and mental science for over 17 years and has experienced firsthand the power of study in

supporting his client’s growth and growing his own companies.

Thanks to donations from local business partners, Dean is excited about the live auction items that will be available at the event, which include a personal and private Blissful Restorative Yoga Retreat for up to 30 attendees, which was donated

by SoulPower Fitness in Martensville with snacks and beverages courtesy of Nourish Natural Health Food Store in Warman.

The second live auction item is a one-ofa-kind artwork piece titled “Stay Curious”, which was created by local artist, new business owner and mother of four PSSD students, Roxanne Willems of RW Art. “In addition to these must-have auction items, we will also have a silent auction table with donations from local businesses and community supporters.”

All funds that are raised through this event will be used towards funding innovative student learning opportunities such as the annual Student Learning Grants and The Da Vinci Project. “The Foundation will continue to work closely with the dedicated team at Prairie Spirit School Division to develop additional projects that align with the Division and provide funding to enhance learning opportunities for the students of Prairie Spirit School Division,” said Dean.

Although the PSSF manages the overall design of the event, Dean credits the commitment and involvement of their partners, community members and the Division for the success of events such as this one. “They say it takes a village to raise a child – the support of this event and for the Foundation is proof of this.”

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM What you need to know The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and water valves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

- Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks- Crews apply a mixture of salt and sand on our streets and intersections to ensure safer driving conditions. If you are near or behind the sanding truck you are reminded to stay back 15m to allow the truck to disperse materials and to prevent materials from potentially hitting your vehicle.

Our crews strive to delivery excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Keeping Hydrants Clear of Snow

With the recent snowfall, the City of Martensville and the Martensville Fire Department would like to ask residents for their assistance with keeping the fire hydrants clear of snow, parked vehicles, and other obstructions.

Clearing snow from the hydrant helps keep hydrants visible and easily assessable which will save valuable time in the case of an emergency. Property Owners may be subject to fines for burying or obstructing hydrants.

Winter Fun Fest is February 17th!

Winter Fun Fest is coming and features plenty of indoor and activities. Some of the activities include a bonfire and Hot Dog Roast, Street Hockey, Snowshoeing Sleigh Rides, Inflatable Bouncers, Laser Tag, Crafts, Face Painting and so much more.

Activities are taking place at, and in the area of the Martensville Athletic Pavilion and Kinsmen Park.

Martensville Schools Collaborate on Relay Race Event at MAP

Approximately 100 students from Venture Heights Elementary School, Valley Manor Elementary School and Lake Vista Elementary School participated in relay races at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion on Thursday, January 30th.

The three Prairie Spirit School Division Elementary Schools within the community have collaborated together on numerous activities for the students, with an upcoming Family Literacy Night taking place this spring.

Teams participating in the relay races consisted of four students in grades 4/5/6 and each team was able to run a minimum of three races. “When the kids go to similar races in Saskatoon, they only get one race. We wanted the kids to have a number of tries so they could learn and grow. Some teams also received a fourth playoff race,” Venture Heights Principal Ron Biberdorf explained.

“Thank you to Angie Reddekopp and the City of Martensville for allowing us such flexible use of the MAP,” Biberdorf said.

The three schools also have plans to work together for large badminton and track and field events this year.

Martensville Students Compete in Rosthern Curling Championship

The 2020 CVAC district senior curling championships were held at the Rosthern Curling Club on the weekend of January 31st and February 1st. Fourteen teams competed in modified double knockout boys, girls, and mixed draws, attempting to move on to the regional playoffs later in the month. In the boys’ draw, MHS 1 opened with a solid 9-1 win over Borden while MHS 2 fell 8-2 against Waldheim. MHS 1 then advanced to the championship game against Waldheim with a 10-1 victory against RJC, but MHS 2 was eliminated from further play following an 8-3 loss to Borden on the B side of the draw. The A side final, which CVAC uses to declare its district champion, was an exciting back-and-forth game. MHS 1 jumping out to an early 5-1 lead after four ends only to see Waldheim come back to take a 6-5 lead after six ends. MHS played a strong seventh end, scoring 4 points and hanging on for a 9-8 victory. On the B side, RJC rebounded from their earlier loss to eliminate Borden with a 10-3 win. This matched them against Waldheim for the second qualifier position. Unfortunately, they did not have any answers to the Raiders’ excellent play as Waldheim won 12-1 in seven ends to join MHS as the CVAC reps to regionals.

Get Ready For a Party on the Pond Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This March, the frozen ponds in Martensville will be a hub of activity for a fundraising event, with proceeds going towards the construction of the new recreation facility in the community. Party on the Pond will be a two-day event which will include a wide range of options including a 3-on-3 hockey tournament, a cabaret, entertainment, meals and much more. Party on the Pond will take place March 13th and 14th and will feature entertainment by comedian Kelly Taylor and the band Gong Show. This will be an adults only (19+) event.

The idea for the event came from something similar that was held at Elk Ridge in the past. “A few teams from Martensville, including myself participated in the event and as we were coming up with fundraising ideas, we thought that since we have all of these ponds in Martensville, it could be the perfect opportunity to host something like it in the community,” Jordan Trach, event organizer, explained.

Trach, owner/operator of Trach Power Skating, has sponsored numerous events that the Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) has held in the past and is a member of the Lace ‘Em Up campaign committee – a group dedicated to raising funds and awareness of the need for an additional recreation facility in the community.

“When it comes to building this much-needed facility, instead of relying on people to give a lot; if we can all give a little, then it will be far more possible,” Trach stated.

“Youth learn so much from sports and they can make lifelong friendships through playing. There are so many valuable life lessons that we can teach these young kids that they can carry on into their life as they get older.

Sports have a way of bringing a community together,” added Trach.

The event will begin on Friday, March 13th with the kick-off to the 3-on-3 tournament, indoor beer gardens, followed by a supper, a social and then entertainment by comedian Kelly Taylor. Saturday will consist of teams playing approximately four games each, outdoor beer gardens, lunch, supper, cabaret and entertainment by Gong Show.

Those participating in the tournament will have access to all additional events with the cost of registration; however, those not participating will be able to purchase tickets to the entertainment portion of the event.

Two ponds in Martensville will be utilized to create 15 rinks to play on this year; however, the organizing committee has much bigger plans in mind for upcoming years.

“We would love to see this event grow into something much larger and are reaching out to people provincially and worldwide to make that happen. There is no reason why we can’t make this a well-known event and keep growing each and every year.”

“We are looking for a lot of volunteers because we know that it will take a lot of work to make this event as successful as we want it to be. We already have a great start, but are certainly looking for any and all help that we can get.”

Currently, the event has already had much support from Martensville and area businesses, which Trach noted the organizing committee is extremely grateful for.

Winter Fun Continues In Saskatchewan Provincial Parks!

Sask Parks is offering more winter activities this year than ever before. With ten special events taking place throughout February and March, there is still plenty of opportunity to get out to a park for some winter fun the whole family will enjoy.

“So far this winter, we’ve had hundreds of Saskatchewan residents take part in our winter activities,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “With a variety of events planned around skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and more, there is still plenty of opportunity to get out and discover what winter in the parks is all about.”

Valentine’s Day in Sask Parks is sure to be a special one with two popular events taking place. Visitors are invited to Moose Mountain Provincial Park on February 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to take part in a candle-lit cross-country ski through the park followed by a hotdog roast and hot cocoa around the campfire. Guests can bring their own skis or rent a pair at the Kenosee Inn on a first-come, first-serve basis. Also on February 14, a romantic “Skate the Park” evening will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Echo Valley Provincial Park. Visitors can lace up their skates and enjoy an evening skate through Aspen Campground with their loved ones. A bonfire and food truck vendor will also be available throughout the night.

Other events to look forward to this winter include: • Snowshoe Through Time at Last Mountain House Provincial Historic Park, February 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Travel back in time to when this iconic trading post was in its prime. Enjoy snowshoeing, learn about fur trapping, visit with historic characters and more.

• Winter by the Lake at Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, February 1 and March 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Join Sask Parks staff and guests for a cross-country ski and/ or snowshoe adventure along the trails at Anglin Lake followed by a bonfire with hot beverages and cookies.

• Winter Fun Day at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, February 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy a day filled with tobogganing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, plus hot cocoa, marshmallows and hotdogs around the fire.

• Winter Fun Day at Douglas Provincial Park, February 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Take in the frosted beauty of winter on Diefenbaker Lake with guided and self-led snowshoe treks through the park, plus horse-drawn sleigh rides and hotdogs, hot cocoa and marshmallows.

• Winter Carnival at Duck Mountain Provincial Park, March 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Experience winter in the park with an entire day full of fun, including a pancake breakfast, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, skating, tobogganing, downhill tubing, an ice-cube hunt, a perogy supper and more.

• Winter Escape at Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park, March 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Stick it to winter with an afternoon of snowshoeing, quinzee-building and survival skill sessions and warm up around the bonfire with hotdogs and hot cocoa.

• Learn to Ice-Fish at Blackstrap Provincial Park, March 21 at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Learn how to ice-fish on one of the most popular ice-fishing lakes in the province. While the afternoon session is currently full, spots are still available for the morning. Equipment is provided and all participants are required to sign up in advance.

Local Kinette Club Sets Big Goal For TeleMiracle

The Martensville and District Kinette Club are presenting Dueling Pianos; a fundraiser to help raise money for Telemiracle 44. Telemiracle has raised millions of dollars to help the families in Saskatchewan in their greatest time of need.

Although the local Kinette club is a new club, they have set a large goal for themselves for this year’s event. “We would love to be able to present a large cheque for our first Telemiracle,” Jodi Martens, Martensville & District Kinette Club President, said.

Dueling Pianos will take place on February 8th at the Brian King Centre in Warman. Cocktails are at 6pm, supper is at 7pm and the show will start at 8pm. “We have a fantastic supper planned and are able to provide meals for dietary restrictions as well,” Martens added.

Tickets for supper and the show are $55 or $400 for a table of 8. You can also purchase tickets just for the show for $30. Tickets for the show will be available at the door the night of the event.

“We have had great support of the community for some amazing prizes and silent auction items including a pair of Apple Airpods that Sasktel was generous enough to donate.”

Seniors Club Sees Success With Bingo Night Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The seniors group at the New Horizon’s Centre in Martensville is excited to be offering something new to the community. The group is hosting a bingo night from 7pm9pm on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.

Each bingo night consists of numerous games and the cost to play all games is $15, with the option to purchase additional tickets. A 50/50 draw is also available each bingo night. The Bonanza bingo is a guaranteed $100 for the winner, with a new number being drawn each time.

Halfway through the event, there is a short break where those in attendance can purchase coffee and refreshments.

“I am really excited that we are doing this and I am impressed with the turnout that we have had so far. It is a great opportunity to come check out the New Horizon’s Centre and meet some new people,” Bingo night organizer Shirley Deda said.

Bingo night is not just available for seniors, but open to everyone that is 18+ and bingo dabbers are supplied.

Payouts for bingos are dependent on how many people are in attendance, with more people comes bigger payouts for the winners. The previous bingo, which was held on January 29th saw 28 people in attendance. “It is a nice night out and something different to do to get you out of the house and you can have a little fun,” Deda added.

The next bingo night will take place on Wednesday, February 12th at the New Horizon’s Centre located at 106 4th Avenue North in Martensville.

Headway Made on First Nations Relations

The perception by others in this country that Saskatchewan is a racist province has become tiring. Yes, we have our problems. One could argue they likely aren’t that much different than the problems anywhere in this country; especially, in provinces with larger urban centres where close quarters in the inner cities tends to be breed tensions of all sorts.

For the moment, let us acknowledge that Saskatchewan people; both urban and rural; have seen their race relations problems. Whether urban or rural, it’s actually one thing all people of this province truly share.

The problem; however, is our race relation problem with First Nations can be a bit of an easy target.

We are a province with a relatively small population and a living history with our indigenous population. Unlike some Eastern provinces where the indigenous population is dwarfed or even driven out centuries ago, Saskatchewan’s relationship with First Nations has been closer and enduring.

It has not always been easy. Saskatchewan has had to deal with many social/economic issues and that has produced both historical and current-day conflict.

In our larger urban centres in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon, the conflict has been a reality. Long before the country heard about Colten Boushie’s death in the Biggar-area farmyard of Gerald Stanley, it heard the names Leo Lachance and Pamela George. Lachance was killed by a bullet fired through the door of a Prince Albert pawnshop run by known white supremacist, Carney Nerland. George was killed by two Regina university students that had solicited her for the purposes of prostitution.

There are other examples of urban racial tension in recent decades; complaints that the Saskatoon police used to use the tactic of abandoning First Nations youth outside the city in the dead of winter or the christening of North Central Regina by Maclean’s magazine as “Mississippi North”. More recently, we witnessed the Gerald Stanley not-guilty verdict that was combined with angry and racist online commentary that simply worsening the matter.

Undoubtedly, we have had our issues and we need to own up to them if we truly want things to get better.

This is the responsibility of all of us, but if things are to get better, we need to acknowledge the people who care and want to make things better and give ourselves credit for the reality that we are making strides.

"There is a sense we are a right-wing people that don't think (about racism)," Justice Minister Don Morgan said in a recent interview. "I don't think it's like that at all.

There is a desire to be understanding and supportive."

It all begins with understanding and while the current government doesn’t get much credit for this, we are witnessing one thing that is a generational change.

Kids in Kindergarten when the Sask. Party was first elected in 2007 are now graduating, having spent their entire elementary and high school not only learning about our treaties with First Nations but also immersed in First Culture that’s applied to every subject area. That doesn’t happen in other provinces.

Such education and awareness has paved its way for things like the Sixties Scoop apology to First Nations and Metis children taken from their parents as past government policy and programming.

We have recently seen Russell Mirasty appointed as Saskatchewan Lieutenant-Governor. Since March 2018, Morgan has seen the appointment of Judges McAuley, Brass, Pelletier and Crooks; with more First Nations judicial appointments expected.

Yes, some of these may seem like small steps that many won’t seem like they are enough. Yes, we’ve had our past issues. Yes, we have more to do, but maybe we need a little credit for who we are and what we have accomplished.

There was a time not long ago when Saskatchewan had the highest number of road fatalities in Canada. In 2019, fewer people were killed on Saskatchewan roads than in any single year since records started being kept in the 1950s.

Our government has taken stricter enforcement measures, introduced targeted legislation and run powerful awareness campaigns – all to reduce road fatalities – because collisions are preventable and even one traffic death is too many.

Thank you to all Saskatchewan residents for working to make our roads safer.

Distracted driving is one of the leading factors in collisions and injuries from automobile crashes in Saskatchewan. In an effort to reduce the number of people driving while distracted, harsher penalties are now being introduced.

Effective February 1, 2020, the cost of a distracted driving ticket for a first offence will more than double, from $280 to $580, plus four demerits.

A second offence, within a year of being convicted of the first, is a $1,400 ticket, plus an additional four demerits, plus an immediate, seven-day vehicle seizure. This penalty does not include the costs associated with towing and impound fees.

A third offence within a year of conviction of the first is a $2,100 ticket, plus four more demerits and another seven-day vehicle seizure.

It is against the law in Saskatchewan to hold, view, use or manipulate electronic communication equipment while driving a motor vehicle, and if you are caught, you will get a ticket under distracted driving legislation.

It’s important to know that an experienced driver can use a hands-free device if it can be activated with voice commands or onetouch, and is mounted on the dashboard or visor in a cradle. But if you’re a new driver in the Graduated Driver Licensing program, even hands-free devices are not acceptable and are illegal to use.

Other forms of distracted driving like eating, using GPS, reading, personal grooming or interacting with pets or passengers are covered under driving without due care and attention legislation. These activities are not considered against the law and won’t automatically result in a ticket. But, if your behaviour poses a risk to road safety, you may be ticketed by police for driving without due care and attention.

The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions for the first time in 50 years! For only the fourth time in Super Bowl history the game was tied at half-time with a score of 10-10. In the third quarter it was the San Francisco 49ers that took the lead with another 10 points and shut out the high powered Chiefs offence.

The fourth and final quarter is where great quarterbacks shine their brightest, especially in big games when they are behind. That is exactly what 24 year old Patrick Mahomes did as he marched Kansas City down the field with under 10 minutes to go for two touchdowns and to take the lead. The Chiefs would add some insurance with a rushing TD with just over a minute left to seal the deal. Mahomes became the youngest QB ever to be named Super Bowl MVP while completing 26 passes for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns. This game marked the third straight that Kansas City came back to win after being down at least 10 points.

Moving to the NHL, and, oh, baby the battle of Alberta is the best thing about hockey right now (if you are into wild games, tight standings and fights). The Flames and Oilers met for the second time in just four nights and tempers boiled over early after Edmonton jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 1:05 into the game.

The first fight of the game came with 5 minutes left in the first as recent Calgary call-up Buddy Robinson dropped the mitts with Edmonton’s Jujhar Khaira. After that it seemed like there was a scrum after just about every whistle. It wasn’t until there was 24 seconds left in the second period when the Oilers took one too many pokes at Cam Talbot (who had replaced David Rittich in net) that the wires finally crossed and everyone grabbed a dancing partner.

The main event took a little longer to develop but all previous fights came to a stop when goalies Mike Smith and Cam Talbot dropped the gloves and blockers for a short but spirited tilt at centre ice. When the dust settled both goalies were ejected from the game and that was pretty much it for Calgary. Rittich had already had a rough night and got pulled after allowing 4 goals on 17 shots and then had to go back in for the third period.

The Oilers took it handily 8-3 but Calgary holds the season series at 3-1. Both Edmonton (62 points) and Calgary (60 Points) are still chasing down the Vancouver Canucks who hold the top spot in the Division with 65 points.

Over in the East the Toronto Maple Leafs are one point out of a playoff spot but just lost goalie Freddy Andersen on Monday night to a neck injury. Protect Yourself: Don't Be Scammed Twice

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) is alerting the public that some individuals who have already been impacted by a scam may be targeted again. The “recovery pitch” scam and the “victim list” scam may be happening in the province.

The “recovery pitch” scam involves a consumer or investor that has previously lost money in a fraudulent situation. Scammers will target these individuals with the claim that they will be able to recover all or some of the funds lost in the previous scheme.

Sometimes the caller is the person who scammed the individual in the first place. The scam artist may claim to be a member of law enforcement or other type of authority to gain credibility.

The “victim list” scam involves a list that is shared or sold among various underground scam artists. When a consumer or investor has been scammed and shares money or even personal information with a scam artist, the person’s name is added to a “victim list”. These scammers will contact the individuals on the list with various pitches in the hopes they will fall victim again.

“Be wary of anyone claiming they will be able to recover your money that was lost on a previous investment or scam,” Deputy Director of Enforcement with FCAA Harvey White said.

“Whether someone contacts you directly, or you happen across a recovery website on your own, anyone proposing to get back your money from a previous scam, should be treated with caution.

Typically, it is all but impossible to recover money lost on an investment scam. While it may be tempting to work with these folks, who tend to promise large settlements in exchange for small fees, we urge you to be cautious of such claims. If something sounds too good to be true, it often is.”

Here are some red flags to watch out for; Being contacted out of the blue. Promises that sound too good to be true. Being pressured to act quickly. Unusual payment methods.

Tips to protect yourself; Do not talk to people calling out of the blue claiming they can get your money back. If someone calls, emails or texts asking for your banking information, do not give it to them. Take time to think things through, regardless of what promises they make to try to entice you.

Always be cautious and seek advice from a professional advisor. Never agree to anything you do not understand. Be suspicious if you are asked to pay with gift cards, bitcoin or other digital currency.

The Martensville Curling Club (MCC) hosted their inaugural Junior Mixed Doubles Bonspiel this past weekend. A total of ten teams competed – five in the A pool and five in the B pool.

Also thanks to the Ice Technicians, lounge volunteers and parents who supported this event,” The MCC noted.
