Students Perfecting Characters for Anne Frank Production Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

As opening night for Martensville High School’s production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” nears closer, the ten student cast has been putting in countless hours perfecting their characters. The script comes from a play that was based around the diary of Anne Frank, a young woman who spent two years in Amsterdam hiding in a secret annex from the Nazis with her family during World War II. Anne’s father, Otto Frank, was the only person out of eight living within the walls of the annex that they called home during this time, to survive after being found. Upon the discovery of the diary, the story of their time in hiding was published, becoming an important part of history.

Since September, the students, teachers and parents involved in making the performance a success have been hard at work, ensuring that come opening night, everything is perfect. “I am very pleased with the progress and the actors are doing a wonderful job of coming along in their characters. Here, at the end, as we tighten the screws a bit on what’s remaining, I think their performances here on stage are just getting better and better. I encourage them to not think that they have hit where they should be but to always work to improve and they are doing it,” said Micah Robinson, MHS teacher and director of the play.

The students who, according to Robinson, “have lived and breathed this play for months” have captured each of the characters perfectly. Throughout the many rehearsals and after school practices, the cast has transformed from high school students into Anne Frank, Otto Frank, Peter Van Daan, Mr. Kraler and the rest of the extraordinary characters involved. “I am surprised every year that we can get the performances out of some of these actors to make us believe that they are 30, 40 or 50 year old people. On the flip side of that, they are sometimes playing characters that are younger and just by their movements, and the way they speak, they envelop everything about that character,” Robinson added.

Robinson, who has been directing the annual plays for numerous years, is pleased with where things are currently at and in the upcoming two weeks, the cast will be running several full runs to finalize all of the final details for the sold out show. With an avid interest in theatre, Robinson feels as though the ability to teach classes at MHS, as well as be involved with the annual production, has provided him with the best of both worlds. “I am very passionate about what I teach and I love my job because of what I teach and the kids in my classroom, but I am also very passionate about theatre and this is definitely a great part of my job.” In addition to being able to pursue his passion, Robinson looks forward to the future possibilities many of these actors can have within theatre, whether it be another high school production, in university, community theatre, or elsewhere. “I expect that a number of these fine actors are going to go on and act someplace else, and I really hope that they do.”

In order for the incredible production to be what it is, it takes a wide array of students, teachers, parents, friends and more contributing their time, their talent and their kindness. Robinson wanted to ensure that each and every person involved in this production was aware of how appreciated their contributions are and that without their support, this wouldn’t be possible. “It’s just a massive amount of thank you’s that have to go out there. There have been so many people contributing and it is important to me that those people are recognized for putting this thing together.”

Opening night will take place on February 8th and run until the 10th. In total, there will be three sold out evening performance and five packed matinees.

Increasing Physical Literacy in Martensville

The City of Martensville Recreation Department is collaborating with Saskatchewan In Motion and working to increase physical activity in Martensville youth. This partnership was initially generated by the City of Martensville Recreation Master Plan, with one of the main items being focused on was improving physical literacy in the community.

From here, the City was approached by representatives from In Motion regarding an initiative they wanted to focus on and everything fell into place. “It was absolutely perfect timing and we now have the perfect opportunity to try to increase the physical literacy in Martensville,” City of Martensville Program Coordinator Angie Reddekopp explained. Now, working together, the goal is to weave physical literacy into the community’s very essence with a goal of getting more kids, more active, more often, with their families, while making their vision of a healthy, active community a reality in Martensville.

The first step for this initiative is gathering information from the community

to ensure that this plan is tailored to the community’s needs. “We want to gather data and learn from the residents what are the barriers regarding physical literacy in the community and what do people like.

From there, we can move forward into increasing the opportunities for physical literacy with the results,” Reddekopp added. There are also plans to hold focus groups, as well as a ‘Moving Together’ symposium.

The need for increased physical literacy has become apparent to Reddekopp, especially with her firsthand view of physical activity within the community while working at the MAP. This January, a ‘Sportball’ program was initiated and through this program, there is a huge focus on physical literacy at a young age. “It is all about giving kids the motivation and the confidence to be able to really participate in any sport. This program is helping children feel comfortable, confident and motivated to be able to participate in a variety of different sports as they get older.”

Government Approves Reduced Rate Increase For Saskpower In 2018 Average Rate Increase of 3.5 Per Cent Will be Applied March 1

After a thorough review, the Government of Saskatchewan has decided to accept the recommendation for a 3.5 per cent rate increase for SaskPower, compared to the original request of five per cent. The government thanks the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel for their work.

As planned, the increase will come into effect March 1. This represents an increase of approximately $4 on monthly residential power bills.

“Every year, SaskPower is keeping up with new records of power consumption, while working to keep power rates as low as possible,” Minister Responsible for SaskPower Dustin Duncan said. “They face an important challenge to maintain and grow our power grid. With their revised fiscal forecasts during the rate review period, government agrees with the Rate Review Panel that SaskPower can meet this challenge in 2018 with a lower increase. We will continue to challenge SaskPower, and all government agencies, to do more with less, and without compromising service to Saskatchewan homes and businesses.”

In its rate application, SaskPower outlined the investment of the rate increase in major maintenance and growth projects to reduce the number and duration of power outages; modernize the power grid; meet the growing demand for more power; and help SaskPower reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent from 2005 levels, by 2030.

“It’s a balancing act that we take very seriously,” SaskPower President and CEO Mike Marsh said. “Electricity is vital in all our lives and for our economy. The power has to be on when and where we need it. SaskPower also has to be financially responsible with its operations. That’s why we’ve optimized our processes, reduced administrative costs and we plan to reduce this spending by an additional $142 million in the next three years using various restraint measures. This 3.5 per cent will allow us to continue investing in the grid and we will investigate additional ways to save money to compensate for this lower-thanplanned increase.”

Keeping our Pets Safe During Extreme Cold

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays please have your vehicles off City streets.

Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a nonposted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws.

At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

Parking the Wrong Way- Traffic Bylaw The Bylaw Department regulates and enforces the City’s Traffic Bylaw. Vehicles parking on the wrong side of the road is a violation that has been occurring on a more frequent basis.

The Martensville Traffic Bylaw 17-2015 states: 3e(vii) No person shall park a vehicle on any street to the left of centre (wrong way).

Enforcement of this bylaw will be increased in response to resident complaints. The penalty for parking the wrong way is $120. Please be a responsible and safe driver.

Parking on the wrong side of the road is an unsafe practice, it is also against the law.

Martensville Girl Guides Prepare to Host Tea & Bake Sale Fundraiser

The Martensville Girl Guides will be hosting a Thinking Day Tea & Bake Sale on February 14th at Venture Heights Elementary School. The event will run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm and will have free entry.

According to Krista Mellesmoen with Martensville Guiding, all proceeds raised will go towards supporting Martensville Guiding and the Canadian World Friendship Fund.

Those attending will have the opportunity to purchase tea and a piece of angelfood cake with real whipped cream and fresh strawberries for $3/person, or two for $5. Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation Presents Learning Grant to the Royal Bean

On Tuesday, January 23rd, the Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation (PSSF) presented a Learning Grant for $1514.96 to the Royal Bean; a school based coffee business that is run by students in the Life Skill Program at Martensville High School.

“The Royal Bean provides an authentic environment in which students with intellectual disabilities can learn life and employment skills and has been extremely effective and beneficial to the students. We are very proud to give them money as they have been very self-sufficient and I think it’s been a great program because it encourages learning,” Denise Kendrick, PSSF Fund Development Manager stated.

The purpose of the PSSF is to raise money to use towards supporting innovation in public education. Since its inception in 2014, the Foundation has held numerous fundraisers and worked with several partners in which to raise funds to help with initiatives within Prairie Spirit School Division (PSSD) locations that don’t typically receive funding. The Foundation’s Learning Grants are designed to support students in Prairie Spirit School Division, with an emphasis on student engagement and relevant learning opportunities.

This year, PSSF presented Learning Grants totaling over $36,000 to nine schools within the school division. Between this year and last, a total of over $76,000 was given to PSSD schools.

“Although we are still growing, we feel as though things are ramping up. Our goal is to engage partners in public education to enrich opportunities for the students. We are just really thrilled that we are able to do this for the students and we can’t wait to hear about the impact these grants will have,” Kendrick added.

Applications for the Learning Grants were open this past fall, and had a focus on enhancing student engagement by empowering young people to explore their passions and create change in their classrooms, their schools and their community.

Following a rigorous application process, the Foundation approved nine submissions from teachers and administrators and provided funds to schools throughout the Division.

Each year, PSSF hosts a golf classic to raise funds and the group is preparing for their fourth annual event this June. In addition, the PSSF will be hosting a Cocktail Party on March 22nd from 4:30pm to 7:30pm at the Brian King Centre in Warman. Tickets to the event are $25.00 each and sponsorship opportunities are still available. “It is really going to be something special. There will be a lot of students there providing entertainment, preparing appetizers and recipients of the learning grants will be there to do demonstrations,” explained Kendrick.

VHS Band Students Showcase Talent

Venture Heights Elementary School hosted a Band Concert on Tuesday, January 23rd, which showcased the talent of the group of grade 6, 7 and 8 students. The band program began last year with grade 6 and 7 students, and this year, the program was expanded to include grade 8 students as well.

The voluntary program currently consists of 150 students, who performed rehearsed musical pieces for the concert.

Prairie Spirit School Division Band students will be participating in a Band Symposium at Martensville High School on February 13th and 14th. Additionally, the Grade 8 band students from VHS will be travelling to Moose Jaw to participate in a Concert Band Festival, and the Grade 6 and 7 students will be doing a local tour in and around Martensville this year. “I look forward to continuing to grow the VHS Concert Band Program with our students and families,” VHS Teacher Tanya Robertson said.

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

On LOCAL BUSINESS Pup’s Plaground a Welcome Addition to Martensville Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Pup’s Playground is a fairly new addition to the Martensville business community; however, since opening in September 2017, they have seen immense success. Owner Kristen Dubé, along with her partner Lea Wiegers are extremely passionate about the level of care they offer to the dogs that they provide service to. That passion is evident the moment that you walk into the doors and see the joy on their faces and on the faces of all of the pups in the doggy park.

Offering the only large group doggy daycare in the Martensville and Warman area, transparency is one of their key beliefs. Upon walking into Pup’s Playground, you immediately have visibility into the back play area through a ten foot window, giving you full access to the daily activities that take place. "We love sharing pictures and videos everyday on our Facebook page for pup parents to see all the fun their pup is having with us throughout the day!" says Dubé. Additionally, each dog is sent home each day with a report card, which provides the owner information about their day, who their friends are, and more.

In the back indoor park, there are two separate areas, each having access to an overhead door that leads to the massive outdoor play area. The two indoor sections allow each dog to spend time with equal minded and energy level dogs. While one group may be rowdier, the other a bit more gentle, every animal attending daycare gets put into the group that suits them best. The indoor park consists of 3600 square feet, while outside is an incredible 6000 square feet, providing plenty of room for dogs of all sizes to expel their energy. “Daycare is for dogs that love to be with and play with other dogs, especially if they don’t have that opportunity at home. Off-leash parks can be a great way to exercise and socialize your pup but more and more dog owners prefer a more controlled environment where they know the other dogs attending are friendly and vaccinated. A well exercised dog is a happy dog and pups that come in and play one or two times a week are happier at home and have less destructive behavior,” Dubé advised. Dogs at daycare are constantly monitored, with a ratio set in place of one person for every 10 dogs.

The women, who are considered themselves “aunties” to all of the pooches, spend time getting to know each of the dogs. “We are heavily involved with the dogs, we get to know their personalities and they all have special little quirks and neat little ways that they fit into the dynamic of our pup family,” Dubé said. The “pup family” is not taken lightly and each dog that attends daycare goes through an assessment process, ensuring that they are capable of enjoying their experience within a large group daycare. “We want to know how each dog’s social skills are and ensure that they are dog neutral. We don’t want them coming in overly confident, or overly submissive. We want to ensure that it is a positive experience for everyone and that is something that we are really conscious of,” Dubé added. Wiegers explained that although there is an assessment, at Pup’s Playground, there is no breed discrimination. As long as each pooch has the proper social skills, all breeds are welcome.

When asked about their typical day, both women agreed that there is “a lot of cleaning involved.” Ensuring that the environment is clean, safe and healthy is on the top of the priority list! This means that each night, a heavy disinfecting cleaning takes place and all surfaces are sanitized with animal friendly cleaners several times a day.

The idea behind the business was always a dream of Dubé’s, who spent many summers helping at her aunt’s doggy daycare in Alberta. Dubé also managed a kennel in the Saskatoon area for numerous years as well, providing even more experience in the animal world. After becoming a mother, Dubé decided to pursue a different career path, which led her into finance. “When this facility became available, I knew that it was what I wanted and I also knew that if I was going to do this, I wanted to do it right.

Wiegers, who has been an animal lover her entire life, was thrilled when her next door neighbor and close friend Dubé came to her with the business idea. “It’s personal satisfaction. We do this business because we love it. These dogs are not just numbers, they are our little pup family, and I am so proud and lucky to help see it grow the way it has,” Wiegers said.

Since opening, there have been numerous volunteers offer their time to pitch in with the dogs, including several students from Martensville High School as part of their Work Ed. Program. “We love volunteers here! It gives those interested in learning more about dog behavior a chance to get some firsthand experience,” Dubé said. In addition to doggy daycare, Pup’s Playground offers boarding and has numerous pet food and treat options available. The boarding option is a fairly new addition and all dogs are crated with overnight surveillance and temperature sensors, with future plans to offer condo style boarding. More often than not however; the dogs end up going home with one of their “aunties” for the night. The available food options are similar to what is carried at Critters in Saskatoon, with a wide array of dry, canned, and raw options for dogs and cats as well as treats, chews and accessories. Consensus Won’t Be Easy For New Premier

We have a new Saskatchewan Premier this week, but we also have the same old financial problems. Brad Wall’s successor will have the final say in addressing these matters, but with all the animosity emerging out of this leadership - not to mention differences of opinion on a lot of the key questions - getting policy consensus may be rather difficult.

The wisest move for the new premier would be to adopt the best ideas emerging out of the leadership. But it may also likely require going beyond what was discussed in the leadership debate. However, let’s begin by exploring the biggest financial challenges and what the leadership candidates had to say about them.

Arguably, the most immediate issue will be whether to carry on the plan to have a balanced budget in 2020 or see the plan extended to 2021 or beyond. It is this issue that will determine spending for so many other critical issues.

When asked how they would address the issue, both Alanna Koch and Tina Beaudry-Mellor said they would extend. Beaudry-Mellor argued a $140 million was needed to reinstate the provincial sales tax exemption on insurance.

However, Ken Cheveldayoff (who signed the Canadian Taxpayer Federation’s Protection Pledge committing to a balanced budget in 2019-20) along with Gord Wyant and Scott Moe. (Moe also vowed to reinstate the PST insurance exemption.)

It will be difficult to find compromise for that next provincial budget that should be unveiled in the next couple months. But unless the new premier is able to do so, the longterm issue of dealing with the $20.9 billion public that will increase to $24.6 by 2021 cannot be properly addressed.

On the matter of the debt, Beaudry-Mellor noted Saskatchewan’s “lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the country.”

That said, she, Wyant, Moe, Cheveldayoff and Koch all agree a balanced budget must be a priority.

Koch advocated “efficiencies within government such shared services models and back office consolidation” as a means of lowering public debt. Similarly, all candidates favoured a heritage/sovereign wealth fund for any future natural resource windfalls, but all agreed balanced budgets and debt paydown had to come first.

Asked specifically about proposed 3.5-per-cent rollback of public sector wages and remuneration to get the government’s books in order, all stepped back from Wall budget position of any specific target number.

That said, there was consensus that keeping public sector wages in check - something that didn’t always happen in the Wall government years that saw registered nurses receive a 36-plus-per-cent increase in one four-year contract.

What is clear is none of the candidates really have seen Crown corporation selloffs - either in whole or part - as a wise strategy to balance budgets or reduce debt.

While the Wall government did occasionally toy with the notion, this would be a continuation of the on-going Sask. Party government position of Saskatchewan keeping its Crowns.

It doesn’t seem that any of the candidates see reducing the current 61 seat legislative assembly as part of the solution. Most skirted around that issue, saying it was a matter for the next Electoral Boundaries Commission the new Premier will have to appoint.

Similarly, there is no thought of rural municipal amalgamation - similar to what we’ve seen with health and school boards - to reduce government costs. In fact, cuts to any government service or tax benefits were generally avoided in the five months of leadership debating.

The leadership hopefuls were divided on whether to maintain public ownership of the Global Transportation Hub. However, there was little admission of how capital expenditures like the $1.9-billion Regina by-pass has added to the province’s financial burden. So successfully addressing the tough financial questions may require the new Premier to go well beyond what was said in the leadership race.

Community Support Key to Success of MCRP Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) is an organization that brings local volunteers together with the unified purpose of raising money for a year-round multi-purpose sports facility in Martensville. These funds are raised through donations from local businesses and organizations as well as through events hosted by the MCRP. Currently, there are five events ran throughout the year; Casino Night, NHL Playoff Draft, TUFF Run, 3-on-3 Hockey Tournament and a Street Hockey Tournament. “With these events, we offer a great opportunity for members of our city to get together, be active and spread the word of our case,” Jesse Reis of the MCRP explained. The next event will be the NHL Playoff Draft, which will take place April 8th at the North Ridge Community Centre. Registration for this event will be available at www.mcrp.ca this month.

The need for a second indoor ice surface was apparent to the members of the MCRP, as Martensville’s population was growing, so was the number of people utilizing the current rink. Reis was excited to share news that the City of Martensville has been working with the design firm AODBT on the initial design of a multi-purpose facility. “This is still very early in the process, but will provide some direction for our City. With this, we understand that to see this facility in our community, it will require some funding from the City in addition to the funds the MCRP is able to generate. This well-deserved nomination took the group by surprise. “When we started this journey, we never thought that we would get nominated for an award like this one, but the committee has put in four years of work and getting something like this really makes our members believe in what they are doing. It is a very lofty goal trying to create a facility for the community, but when you get recognition from those who you are working alongside, it really inspires us to keep pushing forward,” said Reis.

The NHL All-Star festivities came to a close over the weekend in Tampa Bay and what a weekend it was for Vancouver rookie Brock Boeser. The 20-year-old walked away with an extra $551,000 dollars after just two days being an All-Star. Bonuses came from being chosen as an All-Star in his rookie season, winning the Accuracy shooting challenge in the NHL Skills Competition on Saturday, his team winning the 3-on-3 tournament, and Boeser being named All-Star MVP. Let’s recap the whole weekend.

The fun started with the All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday and the first event was one that players didn’t want to participate in because they knew they would be embarrassed by Connor McDavid.

This was correct as McDavid became the first player ever to repeat as the NHL’s Fastest Skater two years in a row with a lap time of 13.4 seconds, narrowly beating out Tampa Bay’s Braden Point who skated a 13.5 second lap. Next up was the Passing Challenge where players had to hit a variety of targets both on and off the ice. St. Louis Blues defenceman Alex Petrangelo completed the course in 46.6 seconds to take the win. Then it was time for the goalies to step into the spotlight in a shootout where the goalie with the longest save streak would get the victory. Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fluery set the record with 14 consecutive saves. Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau took home the honours in the Puck Control relay weaving his soft hands through the course in 24.6 seconds. Once the soft hands were done it was time for the big shots to shine and for the first time in over a decade that the winner would not be named Zdeno Chara or Shea Weber. This was finally Alex Ovechkin’s time to shine and he did just that blasting a 101.3mph shot to take the crown. Last up was the accuracy shooting where rookie Brock Boeser surprised the likes of NHL snipers like Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand by hitting all five targets in 11.1 seconds to make him the winner. Moving on to Sunday where the four divisions competed in a 3-on-3 tournament it was the Pacific taking on the Central in game one. Despite the Central scoring just under two minutes in, the Pacific rolled to a 5-2 win thanks to four assists by Connor McDavid. In game two the Atlantic division lit up Braden Holtby for five goals on route to a 7-4 victory to play the Pacific in the final. Anaheim’s Rickard Rakell tallied two goals for the Pacific as they went on to win 5-2.

Rookie Brock Boeser had two goals and an assist in the tournament and was awarded the All-Star MVP. He is the first rookie to win the Award since Mario Lemieux back in 1985.

Scott Moe Announced as Next Premiere Jordan Twiss, News Editor, Shellbrook Chronicle

It took five months of campaigning, and five ballots. But after all was said and done, RosthernShellbrook MLA and former environment minister, Scott Moe, shocked the province by being selected as the leader of the Saskatchewan Party, and Saskatchewan’s new premier.

Nowhere was the surprise more palpable than at Saturday’s Sask. Party Leadership Convention, held at Saskatoon’s Praireland Park, where more than 2,000 party members gathered to celebrate, and greet the man or woman who would be selected to lead the Sask. Party into the post-Brad Wall era.

Moe’s victory, which saw him garner 8,075 votes (or 53.9 per cent of the vote), defied the predictions of pollsters, which, in the week leading into the convention, had Moe pegged as a distant third place finisher, behind fellow leadership candidates Ken Cheveldayoff, and Alanna Koch.

It was also a come-from-behind victory, as Moe trailed Koch by fewer than 50 votes after the results of the first ballot were read, with Cheveldayoff a close but unexpected third, Gordon Wyant in fourth place, and Tina Beaudry-Mellor a distant fifth.

However, once Beaudry-Mellor and Wyant were removed from the running after the second and third ballots, respectively, Moe surged into the lead. And Cheveldayoff’s elimination from leadership contention after the fourth ballot results were revealed, gave Moe the push he needed to take the place of the outgoing Premier Wall, who officially retired from politics on Jan. 31.

In the end, Moe topped Koch, who was deputy minister to Premier Wall before taking a leave of absence to run for the Sask. Party leadership, by just 1,161 votes in the fifth and deciding ballot. But while the closeness of the race sparked questions about division within the party, Moe was quick to silence any doubt, and said that he, his fellow candidates, and the party, would be united going forward. “We are stronger and more unified than ever before,” he said in his victory speech. “I am truly humbled to be a part of this team, and by the trust that you have placed in me to lead this party, and this province, into the future.”

Moe launched his bid for the Sask. Party leadership Sept. 1, 2017, with the support of 21 of his fellow MLAs, and a promise to “stand with Saskatchewan” – a promise he reiterated many times throughout the campaign, and at the leadership convention. His platform included promises to balance the budget by 2019, restore PST exemptions on crop, health, and life insurance, and establish a ministry of international trade and exports, which will be responsible for growing Saskatchewan’s presence in markets around the world. However, in a media scrum with reporters following his victory, Moe said his first priority upon returning to Regina would be to get up to speed on budget talks, and look to implement his promise on PST exemptions, and a separate promise to spend $30 million to put 400 educational assistants in classrooms across the province.

Moe added that he’d also be looking at the policy platforms of his fellow candidates, to see if any can be implemented by his government going. Most notable, however, was Moe’s vow to continue leading the province’s stand against the federal carbon tax being imposed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government – even if it means taking the feds to court. “I will fight for this province. I will fight for our economy to ensure that we do not have a carbon tax, “ he said. “Justin Trudeau, if you’re wondering how far I will go, just watch me.”

Wall fires parting shots

Many of Moe’s statements echoed ones made by Premier Wall in his final address to the party at Saturday’s convention. Defiant in his exit as he was in his final years as leader of the Sask. Party, Wall began by imploring the party to unite in the aftermath of the leadership race, and face the challenges that lie ahead.

Namely, the 2020 general election. “It is important that the state of the party be strong tonight because of what lies ahead, because of what we will need to do in the future, and because of what we will need to do on behalf of the province in 2020,” he said.

From there, Wall used his 30-minute address to fire parting shots at the opposition: the opposition NDP in Saskatchewan, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s NDP government, and the federal government.

Taking aim at the feds first, Wall said the Sask. Party would continue its opposition to the federal carbon tax, and that it wouldn’t seek approval from Ottawa on its Made-in-Saskatchewan strategy to combat climate change, or any other policies. “We don’t work for the feds. This party works for the people of Saskatchewan,” he said.

Turning to the Saskatchewan NDP next, Wall denounced the party’s cynicism about the province’s future prospects, and its discomfort with the province’s reliance on the oil and gas, and mining sectors. He added that, going forward, the Sask. Party must continue to be the party of hope and optimism.

“If we come out of this convention today… if we come out humble and hardworking and disciplined, offering a vision and a program worthy of this great province, if we come out of here united behind a leader, well, then hope wins,” he said. “Because this is the new Saskatchewan, and hope wins here.”
