Another very successful Ladies Bonspiel was held in Martensville on February 8-10. There were 18 teams registered that kept the rink a very busy place on the weekend. The Bonspiel consisted of three events with each team guaranteed three games. A banquet served by Country Homestyle Catering out of Radisson was enjoyed on Saturday evening.

This year the theme was “Board Games” so many of the curlers were dressed in a variety of games we enjoyed in our youth. Some teams showed their spirit on the ice and others joined in at the banquet. Royals Wrestling is Back!

After several years away from the sport, MHS Royals Wrestling is up and running in our new facility with a dedicated wrestling room. Coach Loeffler and Coach Salzl are very excited by how well the team is performing for a first-year program!

At the first tournament of the year at Walter Murray in December, the team went 29-15 in matches against long established teams. Finishing first overall were: Ashton K-M., Brody N., Toryn S-B., Brody D. Placing second were: Brooke Z., Christian S., Quinton P. Finishing in third: Cadderly K., Connor L.

In January the team had a great weekend in Warman at the Scratch & Claw Tournament. As a team, our wrestlers’ record was 25 wins and 13 losses in matches wrestled. Wrestlers finishing in first included: Ashton K-M., Tatyana L. (in her first tournament ever), Quinton P., Toryn S-B., and Brooke Z. (who won four matches by pin in a combined time of 56 seconds!). Brody D. and Brody N. both went 3 and 1 to finish second. Third place finishers included Cadderly K., Ryan P., Kaden S., and Christian S. Fourth place went to Arwen C. T h i s past weekend was another good one for the team. 8 out of 10 wrestlers earned medals in Moose Jaw: Gold - Brody N., Quinton P. Silver - Brody D., Brooke Z., Christian S., Tatyana L., Toryn S-B. Bronze Ashton K-M. The future looks bright for the Royals Wrestling team!

They would like to especially thank Snipz Hair Design & Spa and Martensville Pharmacy, who were the major sponsors. A special thanks goes out to the many businesses that provided all the door prizes. They deserve a big thank you as there were enough door prizes that each curler received one. The ice was in great shape thanks to Chris and Wes Guenther. “We could not hold this event and make it so successful without all the volunteers who help out”, commented Burnett.

The finals of each event took place on Sunday at 2:00 P.M. with the Delores Sarota team winning the A Event. The B Event winners were the Ada Lacoursiere team. The C Event was won by the Sharon Martin rink. All in all there was some great curling and lots of enjoyment for both curlers and fans.

Elimination of Water and Sewer Account Deposits Discussed at Committee of the Whole Meeting Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville February 12th Committee of the Whole meeting started with a delegation from Sgt Rob Eyre of the local RCMP detachment. Eyre presented Council with statistics from 2018 as well as a comparison between January 2018 and January of this year. In most areas the numbers saw a decrease, with the final total calls for service in 2018 being 198 and this year’s total sitting at 139. Eyre noted that there have been numerous reports of unlocked vehicles being broken into and added that there will be a new RCMP officer joining the detachment soon.

Next on the agenda was a request for direction regarding a rewrite of the current Water and Wastewater bylaw from Leah Bloomquist, Director of Corporate Services. This had originally been brought to Council in January and has now been updated following a survey to landlords as requested by Council. The City sent out 126 mail surveys to property owners on file that own one or more properties and received 46 completed surveys back.

Bloomquist’s report included a proposed elimination of water and sewer account deposits for residential properties. Survey results showed that the majority of landlords were against the elimination of deposits for renters and requiring owner-only accounts and due to these results, Bloomquist recommended that instead, they eliminate deposits for new owner utility accounts, effective the day after the bylaw passes and also that the connection fee is increased to $50 and desists for renter accounts be maintained.

Carla Budnick, City Clerk, presented Council with two requests for direction regarding the waste bylaw and the water bylaw. With the upcoming infrastructure project for upgrading Martensville’s sewer waste, the City of Martensville has been modifying our bylaws to further reflect those of Saskatoon, who they will be working with on the project.

Council was in favor of the updates to the bylaws and they will be brought back to a future Council meeting for formal approval.

The next Council meeting will take place Tuesday, February 19th at City Hall.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures - this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Though there have been no reports of freeze-ups to date, if you experience a waterline freeze-up, or any other interruption in service, please call (306) 931-2166 to report your issue.

Martensville Shows Amazing Support For Prairie Women on Snowmobiles Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Prairie Women on Snowmobiles (PWOS) rode into Martensville on Thursday, February 7th and thanks to the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club, they had quite the crowd to greet them. A fundraising event was held at the Adobe Inn in Martensville where those attending were treated to a delicious steak or chicken dinner, had the opportunity to take part in a 50/50 draw, raffle prizes or silent auction to help raise money for the PWOS.

PWOS is a non-profit organization that comes together each year to help raise money and awareness about breast cancer and the recreation of snowmobiling. The first mission took place in 2001 after two friends, one a breast cancer survivor, decided they wanted to do something to help raise awareness within the province. A group of ten volunteer snowmobilers are chosen annually to be a part of each mission and then travel across the province on a six day journey that covers approximately 1400kms stopping in various communities along the way. This year marked the 19th mission since inception, and more than $2.5 million has been raised over the years with 100% of the proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society for breast cancer research, or to the Sask Cancer Agency to be used for equipment. This year, a total of $59,808.89 was raised which will be used to support cancer care in the province.

“Without the support from you and from your community, Prairie Women on Snowmobiles would not have achieved such accomplishments and we thank you,” PWOS Rider Brandi Kashuba said.

The Martensville event kicked off with an introduction by Arnie Deschner of the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club who thanked everyone for attending.

Following supper, each of the riders had a chance to share their story of why they chose to participate in PWOS. Many had a close personal connection to friends and family members that have been diagnosed with cancer, some that survived and others that were not as fortunate.

This year’s riders consisted of; Brittany Fox, Kim Hladun, Brandi Kashuba, Shawna Leson, Arlene Lockinger, Kaylee Plamondon, Janis Stanley, Alison Taylor, Nadine WiebeTrapp and Shauna Menzel.

At each of their stops, the women invite anyone in attendance that is either currently living with breast cancer, or is a breast cancer survivor to come to the front and receive a special Prairie Women on Snowmobiles pin that is designed to represent the struggle, courage and hope that women with breast cancer face. A generous donation by Hazel Crosson of two comfort quilts also took place. Crosson, a breast cancer survivor created one of the quilts, and the second was stitched by breast cancer survivors, including Crosson.

The donated quilts will be added to the PWOS collection of eight comfort quilts which are loaned out to provide warmth and comfort to those that are travelling their cancer treatment journeys. Crosson shared the story of her own diagnosis and how a friend brought her a quilt that had been created by former PWOS riders. “That quilt meant the world to me and I slept under it for hours during my recovery. As a quilter myself, I knew how much work had gone into its construction. I have a very deep appreciation for what the quilt also meant to those who made it. That quilt told me that I had a team with me hoping for my recovery,” Crosson explained.

Many people stepped up to support the women on their journey, and PWOS President Kelly Rea spoke a little about how much appreciation the group has for everyone that has helped them throughout the years. “What we have been successful at doing over the last 18 years has been totally dependent on volunteers. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart,” Rea said. Moe Manages to Keep Municipalities Happy

Think back about a dozen years ago when we were in the middle of a pre-election fight over education property tax on farmland. Then Premier Lorne Calvert vowed to remove it, although his NDP government never quite got around to doing it. Instead, his NDP government’s focus in its 2007 budget was free prescription drugs for seniors. The NDP were clobbered in rural seats and lost power to Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Party. It was an important lesson on why governments need to pay attention to municipal funding issues, even issues in areas where you aren’t likely to win many seats.

Both municipal politicians and property taxpayers are all too aware of the provincial government’s role in providing adequate funding to keep down local taxes. This takes us to one of the bigger problems Scott Moe has faced since becoming premier a year ago.

Upon taking over from Wall, Moe has had to contend with a reduction in the municipal revenue sharing pool from $271 million in 2016 to $241 million in 2017.

Moreover, after that $30-million cut in the austerity 201718 budget the revenue sharing pool was frozen at $241 million last so that Moe’s government would have a better shot at balancing the budget this year. On top of having to contend with cut and freeze, there was now uncertainty for municipal politicians. The revenue sharing formula

had been based on a simple, clean and predictable formula most quite liked.

Under Wall’s administration, it was decided to give one percentage point of the then-five-per-cent provincial sales tax to fund the municipal revenue sharing pool. Simple.

Easy. Predictable. It was a formula that towns, cities, villages and rural municipalities could easily use to determine what amount of money they could expect in future years. That made budgeting decisions for municipalities, who, unlike the province, cannot run deficits, significantly easier, but then along came that spring 2017 budget that only raised the PST to six per cent but broadening it significantly to things like junk food, restaurant meals and insurance. It was more money for the province that it clearly needed to fight its deficit, but it also threw its revenue-sharing formula out of whack.

Annual provincial sales tax revenue vaulted to close to $2 million, more than $300 million per single percentage point of the now, broader six-per-cent PST. Ideally, Moe could have re-instated the old one-percentagepoint-of-the-PST as the new revenue sharing pool formula and handed over $300-million-plus to the municipalities.

Municipalities surely would have been overjoyed over that, but it wouldn’t have been as helpful to the provincial government’s own deficit fight. The Sask. Party government clearly needs every penny it can get to balance the budget.

So what Moe did instead at last week’s annual Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) is unveil new formula to fund the revenue sharing pool. It is now three-quarters of percentage point of a much broader six-per-cent PST.

In practical terms, that will mean $251 million for the municipal revenue sharing pool in the 2019-20 budget.

That’s a modest $10 million or four-per-cent more than last year, still less than the $271 million in 2016 and a far cry from the $300-million plus it would have been if was a full percentage point.

The NDP and leader Ryan Meili have cried foul, hinting an NDP government could provide a full percentage point and mayors of the big cities, where Moe and the Sask. Party are in for tougher political fights, seem happy with the modest increase and even happier to see a return to stable source of funding and Moe seems to have dealt with a big potential big headache.

Keeping municipal politicians reasonable happy is key.

Trust Your Gut

You always hear people talking about how you should trust your gut and go with your first instinct, but how many of us actually listen to this advice? How many times in your life have you had a feeling and just ignored it? What if that feeling could be the difference between life and death for someone? What if one simple question to someone could mean their life can change for the better?

A common question asked between people often is, “How are you?”. When this question is asked of us, the automatic response for many is just to say “good”, but how many people truly mean it? How many people are battling with their own silent suffering on the inside? How many people are fighting to hold back the tears and instead paste a smile on their face so they don’t worry those around them? What if by digging a little deeper when talking to others, we can show them that they are truly not alone.

There are moments in life that can put things into perspective really quickly. We all have irritations throughout the day, or money concerns, or worry about our kids, our marriage, our families, and more. I just had one of these moments take place this past week. As I worry about a kitchen renovation, or try to manage my time better to get all of the things that I need to do done in a day, in reality, these are minor concerns. I have a roof over my head, I have an amazing support system of incredible people in my life, I have a running vehicle to get me from point A to B, and I am safe.

When we go to Saskatoon, we all see the homeless people living on the streets, and many of us donate and try to help where we can, but what if that was taking place right within our own community? How many people in Martensville are in desperate need of help? One such situation was my moment of clarity last week. A man, who will remain anonymous, was in need of help and was like many of us, and unwilling to ask. Instead, this man was spending his evenings in an unsafe place that provided little shelter from the cold winter nights.

Keeping to himself and doing the best he could to get through each day, it took two people that trusted their instincts to learn just how dangerous of a situation this individual was in. Had things continued the way they were, and no one took the time to dig deeper, this would be a much different article. It would be a write up included in the weekly police report and it would state that a deceased male had been found and had passed due to exposure.

Instead, this man is safe, warm, fed, clothed and has been shown compassion and kindness.

We all need help sometimes, and it is okay to ask for help, especially when the alternative is that there will not be a tomorrow in which to ask. I am so thankful to have learned about this individual and am humbled at my own day to day “stresses”. I am fortunate and I will do my part to help this individual get back on his own two feet again. I am thankful to live in a community where people take the time to make sure that others are okay. I am thankful to have these incredible people in my life that took the time to not just ask this man how he was, but instead asked if he was okay. I am thankful that when someone is in need, others will help where they can. Two dollars might not be able to get us much in this world anymore, but to someone, that toonie could mean they get to eat today. A small group of people donating $2 could mean that someone could have a warm bed to sleep in, instead of shivering through the cold bite of winter air.

Next time you talk to someone and have a feeling that things might not be okay, don’t just ignore it. Dig a little deeper and show them that you care and you want to know if they are okay.

The Calgary Flames are still the best Canadian team in the league but the Winnipeg Jets have closed the gap dramatically. The Flames have struggled since returning from the All-Star break and their bye week and have won just one of their last four games. Calgary still sits atop the Pacific Division standings with 74 points, just one point ahead of the streaking San Jose Sharks and also one point above the Winnipeg Jets for top spot in the Western Conference.

The Jets are 4-4 since returning from the break and have caught up to the Flames and now have a 35-18-3 record which puts them third overall in the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have recovered from a rough January where they only won 4 games and have already won four of six in the month of February. Toronto is second in the Atlantic Division with 71 points and are a whopping 15 points behind the league leading Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Montreal Canadiens were riding a Carey Price six-game win streak and now sit in the first Wild Card spot in the East, six points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Habs have a 7-1-2 record in their last 10 games.

The Vancouver Canucks have found themselves chasing the Minnesota Wild and the red hot St. Louis Blues who are on a six-game win streak. Vancouver is just two points back of both teams for a spot in the Western Conference Wild Card.

The Edmonton Oilers struggles have continued and have managed only two wins in their last 10 games. Oilers coach Ken Hitchcock was quoted after a 5-2 loss in San Jose saying, “At this time of year, the coaches can’t want it more than the players”. Edmonton is the 6th worst team in the NHL but are still just six points back of a playoff spot. Finally at the bottom of the NHL standings are the Ottawa Senators with a record of 21-29-5.

Aside from the fact they beat the Jets 5-2 last weekend, things have been pretty gloomy for the Sens and with the trade deadline looming it’s unsure how many of their top scorers (Mark Stone, Matt Duchene, and Ryan Dzingel) will finish the season with Ottawa.

In non-Canadian hockey news the Anaheim Ducks have fired head coach Randy Carlyle after the team is in the middle of a brutal slump. The Ducks have just two wins dating all the way back to December 17th. They have a record of 2-15-4 in that span. It’s going to take more than a new coach to get out of a funk that bad for the Anaheim Ducks.

They advanced to the next round and travelled to Hepburn on February 7. Hepburn advanced with the 59-30 win.

The MHS senior boys curling team are on a roll. They travelled to Dalmeny for the CVAV conference playdowns. They defeated RJC 8-4 and Waldheim 9-2 in their second game. They advance to the District playdowns on March 1-2 in Meadow Lake. The team consists of skip Brayden Grindheim, third Rylan Gabruch, second Taylor Warren, and leads Liam Lussier and Tanner Johnston. The team is coached by Neda Wilson and Dean Grindheim.

MFD Respond to Minor Mishap

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.
