Martensville Library Provides Opportunity for Local Youth to Learn About Sphero Robots

The Martensville Library hosted a Sphero Robotics program on Monday, October 22nd. The program is a registered program for kids 10-13 years of age.

Sphero Robots are round robots that can move, change colours and be programmed to do different things. Kids participating in the program worked in teams and learned how to use an app on an iPad to control the robots. “The app can also be used to make the programs with simple codes to direct the robot to do different things. At our program, the kids learn how to drive the Sphero Robot and change its colours. After everyone has a chance to learn how to move them, the kids make an obstacle course out of recycled materials and race the robots,” Martensville Librarian Marla Skomar explained.

Bringing the Sphero Robots in are part of the library’s initiative to have Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programming into the community. “The Martensville Library is able to have access to the robots from programming kits provided by the Wheatland Regional Library head office. We are able to book the kits for programs in our branch and present them to our community,” Skomar said. Wheatland Regional Library also has program kits for Cubelets, Ozobots and Hydraulic Builders that the Martensville Library uses for their programming.

Free Flu Vaccine Available Across The Province Starting October 22

Saskatchewan residents can get their free flu shot starting October 22 at public health clinics, local pharmacies, and some physician and Nurse Practitioner offices.

“Influenza can cause serious illness and may lead to complications, hospitalization and even death,” Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said. “Don’t wait. Get your flu shot early in the season to protect yourself, your family and those to whom you provide care.”

Flu shots are recommended for those at higher risk, including seniors, people with underlying chronic health conditions, children under five, and pregnant women. Seniors often have chronic health conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes and weaker immune systems, which makes them particularly vulnerable to complications from influenza.

Saskatchewan’s publicly-funded flu vaccination program offers the injectable vaccine, which provides protection against four different flu virus strains most likely to circulate this season.

This year the province is providing Fluzone® High Dose vaccine for long-termcare residents 65 and older. This vaccine offers improved protection for seniors, especially the elderly. Also, starting this year the role of pharmacists has been expanded to allow them to administer the free flu shot to residents five years and older, during home visits, and in congregate living settings.

Children under five and non-Saskatchewan residents can be vaccinated at a public health clinic. To find out where and when to get a flu shot, call your public health office or HealthLine 811, or visit www.4flu.ca for a complete listing and schedule of public flu clinics.

For a list of pharmacies that provide the free flu shot, check the Pharmacy Association of Saskatchewan website at www.skpharmacists.ca/patients/flu-shots or ask your local pharmacy if they offer it.

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are a number of things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach. Allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean up fallen fruit • Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours.

Cudworth/Wakaw Fire Department Donate Saskatchewan’s First Fire Truck to Firefighters Without Borders Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

We are taught as young children that if we are in an emergency situation, we call 9-1-1 and help will come. If there is smoke in the house, and the call is made, it doesn’t take long before you hear the sound of the firetruck siren making its way to the scene. That familiar red truck pulls up and a group of highly trained individuals decked out in their gear quickly moves into action to extinguish the blaze. What if that wasn’t the case? What if there wasn’t a truck, or gear, or highly trained firefighters that responded to the call?

Sadly, that is a reality for many people throughout the world, which is why the charitable organization Firefighters Without Borders exists. The purpose of this program is to collect used equipment that is still in good working order from Canadian fire departments and ship the gear to countries that don’t have access to these items.

Captain Norm Hydamacka of the Martensville Fire Department (MFD) has been the Saskatchewan Regional Representative for Firefighters Without Borders Canada (FWBC) for the past five years and within that time, has seen some considerable donations made – over $1 million in fact. Nothing could prepare him for the incredible donation of a 1974 Dodge front-mount pumper firetruck made by the RM of Hoodoo – Cudworth & Wakaw Fire Department.

When Hydamacka first became involved with FWBC, it was because the MFD had some older equipment that they were disposing of, and after doing some research, came across the organization. “We contacted them and said that we had some gear to be donated. From there, we sent it off to them and then they came back and said that they needed a person in Saskatchewan to be their contact and asked if I would be interested.

That’s where it all started,” Hydamacka explained. In his new volunteer position, Hydamacka sent emails out to all of the fire departments within the province informing them that any old equipment and gear could be donated, and to contact him if they were interested. “We have received a little bit of everything. Basically anything inside of a fire hall has been donated; jackets, pants, helmets, hoses, flashlights, radios, computers, anything. It has been going really good, but getting a truck donated, that was something I had always hoped would happen, but never expected.”

Offers made on the truck were quite low, so Fire Chief Dar Lariviere decided to speak to their Town Council and suggested donating the truck to a country that might not ever have the opportunity otherwise. The idea was approved, and Lariviere delivered the truck to the MFD on October 14th. Lariviere explained that although the truck still has a lot of life left in it, there are restrictions in Canada in place for how long fire equipment can be used. “For insurance reasons we can’t use it here, but we knew that it could be put to good use somewhere else. We have donated to Firefighters Without Borders before and when the idea was suggested, it was a unanimous yes throughout the department. The places that receive the donations don’t have the same support from their government that we do when it comes to fire apparatus, so donations can make a world of difference to them,” Lariviere said.

This fire truck marks the first one donated in Saskatchewan to FWBC, and with the truck having been purchased brand new in 1974 and having only 9,000 miles on it, it is sure to be a life changing addition to many people. Lariviere, who didn’t realize that this was the first Saskatchewan donated truck, said that his department was excited to find out, and has plans to continue to donate in the future. “You take care of your own, plain and simple. It doesn’t matter where the firefighters are in the world,” he said. Having seen the benefits that donations such as this one can make first hand while in the Air Force; Lariviere explained that although the truck can no longer be used in Canada, the receiving community will get years of use out of it. “These people won’t be carrying buckets to extinguish a fire now, they will actually have a truck to use, and we are just thankful that there is an organization like this in place that can help us get rid of old equipment and put it to good use elsewhere.”

Now comes the next step of the process – transporting the truck. Typically, all donations are sent by truck to Vancouver; however, as Hydamacka noted, “this is a lot different than a box of jackets in the back of a semi.” Currently, there are tentative plans in place for someone to come pick up the truck, drive it to Montana and then have the truck sent to Guatemala. “This is a life changing and lifesaving donation. It could literally be going to a department that doesn’t have a firetruck. A lot of these people don’t have gear or equipment to work with, so every donation is a big deal for them to receive. Each year Diabetes Canada hosts Diabetes Awareness Month in November with a Blue Circle Campaign at Pharmasave and PharmaChoice locations across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This campaign is set in place to raise money for children with diabetes and their families to attend D-camps, where they learn from specialists how to better manage their diabetes. The blue circle symbol, developed by the International Diabetes Federation, is used to signify the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic.

The Martensville Pharmasave will once again be participating in this campaign, which will kick-off on November 1st. Shoppers will have the option to purchase a blue circle at the checkout counter.

D-Camps are a week long opportunity for children that are living with diabetes and consist of typical camp activities such as swimming, watersports, archery, etc. but also focus on numerous diabetes management aspects. The camp has a pediatric endocrinologist, medical residents, diabetes educators, diabetic nurses, dieticians and camp counsellors that are living with diabetes themselves. “The whole camp structure is to support the kids and to teach them how to live with diabetes. It’s a very real learning experience for them, and parents tell us that their kids come back from camp far more confident in how they manage their diabetes,” Faith Rowland of Diabetes Canada explained. In addition to the children’s camp, Diabetes Canada also offers a Family Camp, which is also a week long program that the entire family can participate in. Families can come to camp and learn about diabetes management, meet other families living with diabetes, share their experiences and leave feeling more confident in their abilities as a family to manage diabetes. There is also a Learning Development Camp for children that have aged out of camp and can attend camp to learn how to be camp counsellors.

Approximately 80 children attend camp each year, and 15 families attend the Family Camp. Parents pay for approximately 20% of the costs and the rest is supplemented by donations and events like the Blue Circle Campaign. Families that are unable to cover the 20% have the option of applying for help through Diabetes Canada. “Certainly what research has shown us is that a child that is confident in their diabetes management, and confident in themselves as a ‘normal kid’, even though they have diabetes, are far more likely to have less complications going into the future and that’s what we are trying to achieve,” Rowland said.

Legalized Pot More Of a Future Problem

So marijuana became legal in Canada last week.

It likely hasn’t changed your life much. Most people (an estimated 85 per cent) have either never smoked pot or smoked only on an experimental. As such, most of you are unlikely to be impacted by federal and provincial laws and rules governing marijuana as a legal substance.

Strict laws and rules may be disincentive enough to keep non-users from becoming users.

As is the case with alcohol, you have to be 19 years old. While debate during the Saskatchewan Party leadership did discuss increasing the legal age to 25 years, it was decided it should be the same as the current legal drinking age in this province.

The question is: Will those 18 years and under be more enticed to use marijuana in the future because of last week’s legalization? (More on that in a moment.)

First, though, consider the disincentives there are for non-user to ever become a user. There are no stores yet open in Saskatchewan, but there will be only 51 stores opened in this province. That may seem a lot, but it pales in comparison with the province's 700 retail outlets, all the bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs licensed to sell booze and even the charity or special occasion permits.

If you want booze, it’s really just around the corner. That won’t be the case for pot. Once you purchase your marijuana (no more than 30 grams at a time or you face a $200 fine) you must take it straight home. Neither you nor any passengers can smoke it in a vehicle. You can smoke in your home, but only if it’s your home. If it’s a condo, apartment building or a rental property, it’s up to board, management or property owner.

In Saskatchewan, smoking in outdoor community parks, sidewalks, playgrounds, daycares, theatres (in-door or outdoor) are all out. Of course, there is the great outdoors, although that is limited as well.

While smoking marijuana will be allowed in campers, tents or around the campfire (confined to your campsite), it won’t be allowed elsewhere in provincial and federal parks. Interestingly, such smoking provincial parks are subject to seasonal fire bans, but while all of the above might be more of a deterrent to non-users, will it really be a deterrent to already heavy-to-moderate users?

There are an estimated 4.6 million such users in Canada and their habits are likely to be encouraged by the fact that they no longer face the prospects of a criminal record, but here’s another way to look at it: If such users are already willing to risk fines and criminal records, what really changed last week for them? Well, one thing that’s changed is the risk of prosecution, which has been changing for a considerable time, anyway.

According to government statistics, marijuanarelated crimes have been on a five-year decline, falling 11 per cent in Canada and 17 per cent in Saskatchewan in 2016. Unfortunately that’s not the end of this story.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) very much fears an increase in cannabis-impaired drivers (although they acknowledge alcohol impairment will be a far bigger worry), and then there is the issue of the next generation growing up with marijuana now legal and more socially acceptable.

Yes, it remains illegal for those under 19 years to smoke marijuana, but how effectively does a legal drinking age work when it comes to stopping underage drinkers? There are ample studies suggesting that marijuana use does affect developing younger brains, so what impact legalized pot use may have on the younger generation is a legitimate issue.

Maybe it’s less about what’s happening now than how last week’s legalization might impact people down the road.

Police received 175 calls for service from October 15, 2018 to October 22, 2018.

Complaints of Impaired Drivers in Martensville Results in Charges October 18, 2018 at 5:25 a.m. Police received a complaint of a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller reported that they suspected the driver had consumed alcohol. Police attended the scene and arrested the 30 year old female driver of the vehicle from Saskatoon. She was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. She was released a short time later on document for an upcoming court date on Impaired driving charges. There were no injuries.

October 21, 2018 at 12:05 a.m. Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Lutheran Road south of Martensville. Police attended the scene and spoke with the 36 year old male driver of the vehicle. It appeared as though he had consumed alcohol. He was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. He was released a short time later on Impaired driving charges.

There were no injuires.

PROPERTY Youths Warned of Dangerous Activities October 16, 2018 at 4:20 p.m. Police received a complaint of youth’s

starting and putting out fires behind Glenview Cove in Martensville.

Police attended and spoke with the two male youth’s and warned them of the dangers of their activities. Their parents were also notified. There were no charges or injuries.

Theft of Utility Trailer on Main Street Reported October 17, 2018 at 9:05 a.m. Police received a complaint of theft of a utility trailer on the 600 block of Main Street in Martensville. The caller reported that they had their trailer parked in the back of their property when it went missing. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

PEOPLE Complaint of Ringing Residents Doorbell October 16, 2018 at 9:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of someone ringing the door bell at residences on the 700 block of 3rd Street south in Martensville and running away. The caller was concerned that the people may cause more damage to property.

Police made patrols of the area, but did not locate any suspicious people in the area. There were no charges.

Hitch Hiker Reported near Martensville October 17, 2018 at 7:35 p.m. Police received a complaint of a hitch hiker on Highway 12 near Martensville.

Police attended the scene and located the male from Rosthern. The male had outstanding warrants. A safe ride was arranged for him back to his home. There were no charges.

Section 35(5) of the Traffic Safety Act refers: allow other person to use your drivers licence. The fine for this infraction is $150.00.

COFFEE WITH A COP Warman RCMP are advising residents of Warman and Martensville that “Coffee with a Cop” is at McDonald’s Restaurants.

Warman October 31st, 2018 @ 10:00 o’clock RCMP members will be at Warman McDonalds Restaurant for a chance to ask questions and to get to know the police officers in your city.

Royals Take First Playoff Game

The MHS Royals ended their regular season with a 4 and 2 record securing them a home playoff game Saturday when the Kindersley Kobras came to town. The weather finally cooperated as fans were treated to a beautiful afternoon and a Royals win. The Royals defeated the Kobras 35-7.

Gutek was first to get the Royals on the board with a handoff from QB Tynan Guenther. They added the 2-point convert to make it an early 8-0 lead. In the last play of the first quarter, Guenther connected with Kyler Fraser in a 40-yard pass and run for the major and a 14-0 lead. Early in the second, Guenther found Cote for a 30-yard completion which set up another Gutek touchdown. This would be called back on a holding call against the Royals. The Royals were plagued with many penalties, but they were fortunate this did not hamper their ability to keep the lead through the whole game.

The defense kept the Kobras off the scoreboard until the third quarter making it 14-7. At 9:20 in the fourth, Guenther completed a 25-yard pass to Fraser who ran 25 yards for the major. They completed a two point convert to make it a 22-7 game. Shortly after the Kobra punt was blocked and Josh Dyck recovered for the Royals on the Kobra 3-yard line.

They would take advantage of the turnover when Connor Hamelin took the handoff and found the endzone making it 28-7. The defense blocked two punts during the game. The Royals would add to their lead late in the game when back-up quarterback Aiden Kliewor executed a QB sneak to make the final 35-7 for the Royals.

This win advanced the Royals into a provincial playoff against Esterhazy this Saturday in Esterhazy. The winner of this game with take on the winners of Lumsden and Melfort. GO ROYALS!

MHS Girls V-ball Take Bronze Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The MHS girls hosted an 8-team tournament on the weekend at the MAP. Hanley, Warman, Delisle, VCA, Asquith, Clavet, and Kerrobert played in the tournament.

Martensville finished the round robin third in their pool. They beat Asquith to go on to the semi-final against Kerrobert. Kerrobert took both sets and advanced to the final against Hanley. Martensville played VCA in the bronze medal game and took both sets to become bronze medalists. The Girls will travel to Macklin this weekend, and Prince Albert the following weekend as they gear up for regional playoffs on November 9 in Warman.

Just two weeks left in the CFL and there is still quite a bit to be decided as week 19 didn’t solve anything.

In the West, the Stampeders, Riders, and Lions have clinched a spot in the postseason. In the East, Ottawa and Hamilton are locked in but it will come down to the final weeks until placement is figured out.

Last week started out with two great games on Friday. The Ottawa RedBlacks are now in sole possession of first in the East after a 4th quarter TD put them up 35-31 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. These two will play again next week in what will surely be a thriller between the top two teams in the East. The BC Lions clinched a playoff spot with a win over the Edmonton Eskimos. The Lions put up 21 points in the 3rd quarter on route to a 42-32 win. On Saturday, the two top teams in the West faced off in Calgary, and the two worst teams in the league battled in Toronto.

In the battle of the basement, the Toronto Argonauts snuck out a 26-22 win over Montreal in a game that was strictly for pride. Then the Calgary Stampeders continued to not play well and suffered their fourth loss (second in a row) of the season, this time to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Stamps have not looked themselves for the past 3 weeks and have still yet to clinch the top spot in the West with 2 games remaining. The Riders are the only team that has a chance at taking over top spot in the West. Saskatchewan has just one game remaining and needs a win and two Calgary losses in order to take first in the West and with the way Calgary has been lately, it is very possible.

My picks went 2-2 last week putting my record to 48-25 on the year with just two weeks left in the season. My week 20 winners are Winnipeg, Hamilton, Saskatchewan, and Toronto.
