Finalists Announced For 2018 WMBEXA Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

ABOVE: Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jaimie Malmgren announced the finalists for the 2018 Warman Martensville Business Excellence Awards.

Representatives from numerous businesses along with community leaders were present at the live finalist announcement for the 2018 Warman Martensville Business Excellence Awards (WMBEXA) on Thursday, March 15th. The event took place at Twinses Restaurant in Warman and approximately 40 people were in attendance.

The excitement in the room was evident as those in attendance waited to hear who the five finalists were for the categories; Community Involvement, Customer Service, New Business, Non-Profit of the Year and Business of the Year. Before making the announcement, Jaimie Malmgren, the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) Executive Director, invited Jessica Reimer, Community Investment Specialist with Affinity Credit Union up to say a few words. Reimer noted that Affinity Credit Union, the presenting sponsor for WMBEXA, “is proud to sponsor events like this that celebrate achievements of local business and economic development.” Reimer continued to state that, “together we are building stronger, more vibrant communities and that is definitely something to celebrate.”

From there, Malmgren stated that this year there was a record number of nominations submitted, which led to a record number of applications sent in to be reviewed by a panel of anonymous judges. “Given the calibre of businesses represented, our judges didn’t have an easy task, as some of the final tallies came within half a percentage point difference,” explained Malmgren. It was then time to reveal the finalists for the five categories.

Customer Service finalists included: Paws Republic, ACT AV, Nourish Natural Health Food Store, Concrete Edge, and Finelite Photography and Design.

Community Involvement Finalists are: Warman Physiotherapy and Wellness, Pharmasave, Warman Home Centre, Dahlia Salon and Spa and Affinity Credit Union.

New Business of the Year finalists are: Fit Prairie Girl, Crossword Puzzle Answers Hawthorne and Wool, Santosha Yoga, Salon Beautiful and Bravo Dance Company.

Business of the Year finalists are: Creative Wood Interiors Inc., SAS Home and Floral Boutique, Wrench Fitness, Dancers Edge and Clark’s Crossing Gazette.

The finalists for the newly added Non-Profit category include: Warman Community Collective Garden, Martensville Community Recreation Project, Warman Community Association, Warman Sport and Cultural Village and Martensville Information & Visitor Centre.

Winners for each category will be announced at the third annual WMBEXA gala, taking place May 4th at the Brian King Centre in Warman.

Elise Hildebrandt, the PSCC Chair, was excited to introduce a new way to announce the finalists this year, and said that “each year we want to try something different. This year is a bit more personal and presents yet another fantastic opportunity to network with other businesses within our region. We want to build these connections between businesses.” Hildebrandt also wanted to mention the numerous sponsors, businesses and the Board of Directors for their role in the annual gala. “We couldn’t do this without everyone’s participation and it is so much fun to see who comes forward each year. Please don’t stop, continue being a part of it, as there is something so special about being able to connect in your region.”

The City of Martensville is beginning to experience water line freeze-ups. If you experience a waterline freeze-up, or any other interruption in service, please call (306) 931-2166 to report your issue. If this happens outside of regular business hours, please follow the prompts to be transferred to the emergency after-hours contact.

Snowmobile Regulations- Traffic Bylaw

The City of Martensville has received numerous complaints about snowmobiles being driven through city streets, parks, municipal reserves and drainage systems. The parks, drainage ways were built for residents to use for walking, x-country skiing, tobogganing, and other outdoor winter activities. The safety of those utilizing these areas is becoming a concern. Driving snowmobiles on city streets also creates a traffic hazard. Snowmobilers are asked to abide by local bylaws including: • Entering and exiting the City utilizing the most direct street route between their residence and city limits.

• Not operating a snowmobile in excess of 20km/hr • Operating only between 7AM and 10PM • Not operating a snowmobile in any park, public or municipal reserve • Not operating a snowmobile on Centennial Drive other than to cross or obtain fuel.

Martensville Residents Experience Frozen Water Lines

The City of Martensville recently issued a public service announcement regarding water line freeze ups occurring among Martensville residents. When this happens, it can cause an interruption in your service and can lead to damage to your pipes and to your home if the pipes burst. “A number of factors can contribute to the freezing of water lines. This year has been particularly troublesome for waterline freeze-ups due to the repeated cycles of freezing and thawing, which drives the frost line deeper. This freeze – thaw cycling as well as lack of snow, which acts as insulation, have made shallow waterlines susceptible to freezing,” Matt Gruza, City of Martensville Acting Director of Infrastructure, explained.

To help prevent this issue from happening, Gruza states that the “best prevention for frozen waterlines is proper construction and installation which conform to applicable building codes. Unfortunately some homes were built before our current building codes were adopted and they may be prone to waterline freeze-ups under certain conditions.” For residents that will be away for an extended period of time, Gruza also added that “it can be helpful to keep one tap in their home running at a very slow trickle. This moving water can be enough to prevent a freeze-up.”

This year, there has been an influx in calls regarding frozen water lines and the City advises that residents with existing drip lines installed are requested to contact Public Works at (306) 291-2266 or (306) 931-2308 to arrange an appointment to have the dripline in your home inspected, turned on and adjusted. This can help prevent water line freeze-ups.

For residents without a drip line that experience a waterline freeze-up, or any other interruption to their service, contact (306) 931-2166. If it is an after-hours emergency, you will be prompted on who to contact.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Parks & Rec asks residents to please use caution when out on the leisure trail system.

Erratic thawing and freezing weather conditions are making parts of our trail system very icy. Crews are out sanding and/or removing icy sections as much as possible.

Thaw Safely: Tips to Protect Your Home in the Spring Melt

Mother Nature’s latest wallop has left huge piles of snow in its wake.

Managing the white stuff as it melts will help to keep your home safe.

Managing snow around your property and checking on a few key pieces of equipment in your home will help with keeping melt water running smoothly:

• Rake remaining snow off your roof.

• Check your eavestroughs and gutters for signs of ice dams and/or remove debris that could slow the flow of water.

• Shovel snow away from the foundation of your home.

• Check the grading in the yard to see that it is sloping away from the foundation, allowing melt water to lead away from your home.

• Extend your downspouts away from the home by at least two meters.

• Check your backwater prevention valve on the main line of your sewer, if your home has one – is it in working condition?

• Check on your sump pump and pit to make sure everything is in good condition and ready for melt water.

• Check your basement regularly for signs of water.

When it comes to water damage, be sure to check with your SGI CANADA insurance broker to see if you have coverage for overland flooding. Sewer back up and flood coverage is optional, so for peace of mind, check on what you opted for in your policy.

Following these steps should make your home spring melt ready. If your home does experience flooding or other damage, contact your SGI CANADA insurance broker as soon as reasonably possible to file a claim. One of our adjusters will contact you to make an appointment to come out and assess the damage. In cases of water damage, tips include: Clean up as soon as possible. Seek professional advice on how to clean up and take whatever reasonable steps you can to minimize the extent of the damage. Don’t throw anything out. Store damaged items in a reasonably safe place so the adjuster can see them when he or she arrives. Have any appliances (including furnaces) that have come in contact with water checked by a qualified electrician, dealer or service person before you use them. Do not touch any electrical systems or panels until you know it is safe to do so, especially in wet or damp conditions. Move damaged belongings to a dry area with good ventilation. You should keep track of cleaning expenses as they are considered part of the insurance claim.

SGI CANADA also encourages customers to take photographs or video of their damaged property to give to their adjuster.

Scott Roofing is currently heading into their third season since inception, and things show no signs of slowing down. Scott Landru, the owner/operator of Scott Roofing, had previously worked for Helgason Roofing until the owner retired and from there, decided that he wanted to give business ownership a go. He basically took that business and remodeled it into the business that we have today,” Landru’s wife Leslie explained.

Gov’t Needs More Options on Carbon Tax

This is in no way an endorsement of the federal Liberal government’s carbon tax. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the debate more than a decade ago over the demise of the Canadian Wheat Board. Similarly, the then Jean ChretienPaul Martin federal Liberal government failed to absorb just how much of an effect it was having on those who made their living from a specific sector.

While many took philosophical offense to a stateowned agency dictating their marketing decisions, the problem was the practical reality that today’s farmers were already nimbly marketing non-board grains, pulse crops and oilseeds. But today’s carbon tax debate is actually more nuanced. Some in the oil industry are actually supportive of carbon pricing. Heck, even the Sask. Party government passed 2010 legislation to that effect. The problem in both debates, however, has been hyper-partisanship with little or no acknowledgement of other issues that may have been in play.

It is true that many farmers have quite successfully marketed their grain since the CWB demise, but with problems moving grain by rail, on-going struggle with grain, oilseed and pulse prices sometimes caused by tariffs imposed elsewhere, problems remain. Proponents of the CWB go as far as insisting its demise has left agriculture with one less tool to directly or indirectly deal with these problems especially the problem of grain movement. This is debatable.

But given farmers’ recent demands for implementation of Bill C-49 to get the grain cars moving, there remains a review that there’s a time and place for government intervention.

Again, the same elements are not play with the carbon tax. And with it in the works, the Sask. Party government would be remiss if it didn’t express its opposition to legitimate concerns. According to Premier Scott Moe, it will cost Saskatchewan people $4 billion in the next five years, but simply opting out of a policy implemented by a duly elected federal government is not as easy an option as the Sask. Party government suggests.

Last week, Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna told Moe’s government: “To be clear, we cannot accept your request not to price carbon in Saskatchewan.

Among other reasons, it would be patently unfair for one jurisdiction to avoid participating in this important national effort to support clean growth and cut pollution.”

The letter comes in response to Environment Minister Dustin Duncan saying this province wouldn’t sign on, but still wanted $62 million for signing on. As for Saskatchewan’s claim that its own “Prairie Resilience: A Made-in-Saskatchewan Climate Change Strategy”, McKenna noted the provincial plan offers no carbon pricing solution and lowers the threshold of what is considered a “heavy emitter” from 50,000 tonnes of emissions to 25,000 tonnes.

With an economy so reliant on agriculture, oil and mining and with the bulk of electrical power being generation by coal-fired plants, there is no question Saskatchewan needs to ensure the issues of industry are considered, but does that mean the province has no obligation to ensure heavy emitters are reducing GHG? Is there nothing to be discussed or negotiated that could still benefit Saskatchewan people?

Last week, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale argued about how GHG absorbing carbon sinks on farms will offset those per tonne emission charges. He also noted money could go to lower farm property taxes or other programs that could make agriculture more viable. Yet Moe and company see this a matter that can only now be dealt with in court?

The Manitoba government recently signed on to the climate strategy because it viewed a constitutional challenge of the federal law as throwing good money after bad. That leaves Saskatchewan as the lone holdout with no options …. other than actually sitting down with the feds. Negotiating should always be a viable option.

It’s down to crunch time in the NHL where teams are clinching and teams are being eliminated from playoff contention. The Nashville Predators were the first team to punch their ticket to the post season. This is their 4th consecutive playoff berth and the 11th time they’ve made it in their last 14 seasons. The Preds currently have the best record in the league at 47-14-10 (104 points) and show no signs of fatigue as they hold a 9-0-1 record in their last 10 games. The Tampa Bay lightning are the only other team to clinch a playoff spot as they too broke the 100 point plateau with a 49-19-4 record (102 points). On the other end three teams now officially have no shot of making the playoffs. Vancouver, Buffalo and Arizona have been eliminated from the postseason with 59, 58 and 57 points respectively. The Calgary Flames are still on the outside looking in and it isn’t looking very good. With less than 10 games remaining in the season the Flames are four points back of Los Angeles for the second Wild card spot and have been less than stellar lately with a 3-6-1 record in their last 10 including a 4-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday.

The Flames are going to have to get hot in a hurry and hope some teams play spoiler if they hope to keep their playoff hopes alive. Other Canadian teams with playoff hopes are the Winnipeg Jets who are sitting pretty with the third best record in the West (96 points) and the Toronto Maple Leafs who sit third in the East with 93 points. Both teams have the potential for deep playoff runs in 2018.

I don’t talk about basketball very often but the playoffs are also approaching in the NBA and Canada’s only team has the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Toronto Raptors have a 52-18 record and have already clinched a spot in the playoffs. The Raps recently snapped an 11-game win streak after a heartbreaking loss from what seemed to be obvious blown calls.

None the less Toronto still has the third best record in the league and have some of the best odds of taking home the Finals Trophy.
