Marauders In Midst of Playoffs

The Marauders are in the middle of provincial playdowns and two of the teams have advanced past the first round. The Midget A team faced Star City in the first round and defeated them 2-1 and 6-3. Warman defeated the Battlefords in the 2-game series to face Kindersley. Martensville was taking on Carrot River in the second round and were down in the series two points. They faced them again on Saturday in a close match with Martensville taking on the early lead.

Late in the second, penalties plagued the Marauders and the Loggers tied it at one. The third period saw some great scoring chances for both teams but once again, the Logger power play capitalized and gave Carrot River the 2-1 lead. The Marauders pulled their goalie late in the third but failed to tie the game so Carrot River advances to the third round.

The Bantam A team advanced past the first round defeating Muenster 7-2 and 9-3. They hosted the Battlefords in the second round on Saturday. Battleford took the first game.

The Marauders travel to Battleford on Saturday, March 3 for game two. Warman defeated Meadow Lake and Battleford beat Cudworth to move on to the second round.

The Peewee A team is facing their rivals the Warman Wildcats in the first round of the provincials. Their first match up was on Friday as Warman hosted the Marauders. The Marauders took the first game of the series 3-2. The Marauders host next Sunday at 3:00pm for game two of the series.

Atom A Villains Travel to Edmonton for Tournament

Kleiboer Receives Award Nomination

Levi Kleiboer, a 19 year old defenseman, is currently playing with the Battleford Northstars for the 2017-18 season and is in his third season with the team.

He was recently nominated for the SJHL Top Defenseman Award.

Kleiboer has had a stellar year with the Stars who are at the top of their division. He also had the privilege of being chosen to play on the Western Canadian Junior A Team and travelled to Nova Scotia where they brought home the gold over Team USA. Kleiboer has 39 points in 41 games and 5 points in his last six games played.

He is up against Josh MacDougall of Nipawin and Clayton Eisler of Melville for the award. The teams are all gearing up for playoffs as they finish off the last two weeks of the regular season.

North Battleford Hosts Winter Games

The City of North Battleford hosted the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games from February 18 - 24, 2018. The Saskatchewan Winter Games are an opportunity to "Celebrate Winter's Best", which was the theme of the games. The event showcased 1,800 of the province's top young athletes competing in 17 different sports. Martensville sent 18 athletes to represent the Prairie Central District. The Opening Torch Relay, sponsored by Sask Energy, took place on February 18. Former games alumni acted as torch bearers. The games wrapped up on February 24 with the Saskatoon Athletes placing first in the medal count with 108 medals. Prairie Central came fourth with 58.

Female Hockey in Warman

Warman Minor Hockey is pleased to begin the process of developing and hosting a full scale regional female hockey program.

Based on the governance changes for female hockey in 2018-19, Warman Minor Hockey will kick off the season with teams in the Peewee, Bantam and Midget divisions. Expectations are that the Midget and Bantam team(s) will participate in the NSFHL, while Peewee team(s) will participate in the SMHA league.

Player Registration will commence in Spring 2018 and will be open to all local and regional players that are interested in playing Female Hockey. Team sizes, quantities and tiers will be dependent on the amount of players registered for the coming season.

Future years will continue to see Warman Minor Hockey grow the Female Hockey program to include non-local members in the Atom, Novice and Initiation age divisions. These additions will follow the Warman Minor Hockey development model that is utilized within the association.

In the event that local registration is sufficient to host a female team within a younger age group for 2018-19, consideration will then be given to start on a local basis, in advance of the regional program. Local teams would be given consideration under the SMHA grid system.

Warman Minor Hockey would like to thank the neighbouring associations for their support in creating a regional program for female hockey.

The 2018 Winter Olympics have come to a close in PyeongChang, South Korea and the Canadians walked away with more medals than ever before. Canadian athletes placed third in medal standings with 29 total medals including 11 gold, 8 silver, and 10 bronze which can be taken as an amazing feat for the country. However, of those 11 gold medals, none of them came from Canadian staples hockey and curling.

Four years ago the men’s curling, women’s curling, men’s hockey and women’s hockey all came home with gold medals and this year in Korea those four teams finished with a total of two medals, a silver in women’s hockey and a bronze in men’s hockey.

The woman’s hockey team lost in a heartbreaking shootout to the Americans in the gold medal games while the men lost in the semi-finals to Germany in a stunning upset.

They would then beat the Czech Republic in the bronze medal game to take home third place. Both Canadian Curling clubs failed to medal in Korea. The women’s team struggled throughout the games and missed playoffs completely while the men lost in the bronze medal game to Switzerland. Despite the lack of gold in our countries main sports, Canada still managed a personal best in medals and the future has never looked brighter for Canadian Olympians and they look to make

a strong outing in Beijing 2022.

In the NHL it was trade deadline day on Monday and a number of big deals went down, but even before the deadline some major moves were being made. On Sunday the Boston Bruins added even more depth to their line-up with the acquisition of Rick Nash from the New York Rangers. In return the Rangers received a 2018 1st round pick, forwards Ryan Spooner and Matt Beleskey, as well as defenceman Ryan Lindgren and a 7th round pick in 2019. The other big trade before the deadline was the Montreal Canadians shipping veteran Thomas Plakenec to the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the deadline some of the bigger deals included Blues forward Paul Stastny going to the Jets for two draft picks and a prospect. Former Saber Evander Kane went to San Jose, also for two picks and a prospect. The Oilers traded away Patrick Maroon to New Jersey for a 2019 3rd round pick and a prospect. The biggest trade of deadline day was made between the Rangers and Lightning as Tampa received Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh and forward J.T. Miller. In return New York got two draft picks, Vladislav Namestnikov, and a pair of young prospects. After the deadline two of the best teams in the league, Boston and Tampa Bay, have bolstered their roster in hopes of a deep Stanley Cup run.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures. This hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Watch for Icy Pathways!

Parks & Rec asks residents to please use caution when out on the leisure trail system.

Erratic thawing and freezing weather conditions are making parts of our trail system very icy. Crews are out sanding and/or removing icy sections as much as possible.

Keeping our Pets Safe During Extreme Cold If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws.

At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

The City of Martensville has received numerous complaints about snowmobiles being driven through city streets, parks, municipal reserves and drainage systems. The parks, drainage ways were built for residents to use for walking, x-country skiing, tobogganing, and other outdoor winter activities. The safety of those utilizing these areas is becoming a concern. Driving snowmobiles on city streets also creates a traffic hazard.

Snowmobilers are asked to abide by local bylaws including: • Entering and exiting the City utilizing the most direct street route between their residence and city limits.

• Not operating a snowmobile in excess of 20km/hr • Operating only between 7AM and 10PM • Not operating a snowmobile in any park, public or municipal reserve • Not operating a snowmobile on Centennial Drive other than to cross or obtain fuel.

Conjunctivitis Found in House Finches Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation in Saskatoon has posted several notices to area residents of an outbreak of conjunctivitis, an eye disease, in House Finches, a bird common to the area. Although it has been seen in numerous House Finches, the disease can easily be passed along to other birds, and can cause severe declines in bird populations. The disease does not pose any health risk to humans.

There have been numerous finches brought in that have been affected by the disease, which causes swollen eyes, lethargy and causes them to have an inability to see, rendering them helpless to predators and unable to eat.

If you see a bird with these symptoms at your feeder, Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation recommends that you remove the feeders, wash them thoroughly and keep them down for approximately one week. If you manage to catch the bird, they ask that you contact them at info@livingskywildliferehabilitation.org or (306)2810554.

Spring Runoff Expected To Be Below Normal

The Water Security Agency (WSA) released the preliminary spring runoff outlook for 2018.

With the dry conditions in the summer and fall of 2017 combined with below normal winter precipitation so far, a below normal spring runoff is expected across southern Saskatchewan this year.

Conditions are near normal across northern areas of the province. Meadow Lake and the Upper Churchill River Basin is the exception with this region receiving extremely high rainfall in 2017 which created a wetter than normal landscape at freeze-up. This area is expected to experience normal to slightly above normal spring runoff in 2018.

The summer of 2017 saw extremely low rainfall across a large portion of southern Saskatchewan with record dry conditions in some locations. These conditions continued into the fall where precipitation was also below normal. As a result, soil moisture conditions were dry at freeze-up and significant wetland storage was available in many areas.

The runoff potential could change as there is potentially another 8-10 weeks of winter remaining. However, with dry fall conditions and below average winter precipitation to date, it would take well above average precipitation in February, March and April to produce an above average spring runoff within southern areas of the province.

After spring 2017, most surface water lakes and reservoirs were full or near full; however after extremely low rainfall throughout the summer and fall of 2017, many are now at below average levels.

Some agricultural water supply issues began to emerge in late summer 2017, primarily in the south central areas of the province. With below or well below normal runoff expected, it is anticipated that these water supply shortages will intensify and expand across southern Saskatchewan. This could create some water supply issues for municipalities and irrigators if conditions remain dry into the summer months.

As conditions change and get closer to spring runoff, WSA will issue another updated forecast in March.

Another Long Walk Submitted by Dean Johnston

“Hey, you remember that time we walked halfway across Spain?” / “Yeah, that sounds familiar.” / “Wanna do it again?” / “Um, sure, why not?” And there you have the riveting story of how we ended up back in Spain hiking 800 kilometres for the second time. The Caminos de Santiago, of which there are roughly twenty, are ancient Catholic pilgrimages leading to the final resting place of biblical apostle, St. James (Santiago in Spanish). They all start at different points around Europe, but all finish in Santiago de Compostela in Western Spain. While still a rite of passage for devout Catholics, they have also become increasingly popular with adventurers, backpackers and intrepid walkers.

There is no such thing as a “typical” Camino pilgrim, as these daunting tracks attract people of all ages, walks of life and levels of physical condition, as well as possibly the widest variety of practical hats you’ll find anywhere.

Back in 2012 we hiked the Camino Francés, which is far and away the most popular Camino route. In September 2017, almost exactly five years later, we decided it was high time to plunge into the Camino lifestyle once again. This time around we opted to combine two routes. The Camino del Norte starts near the popular beach city of San Sebastián and runs west along the beautiful Atlantic coast. Then the Camino Primitivo heads inland offering difficult mountainous terrain but also sensational mountain views.

Ultimately, both of these routes lived up to their billing. Incredible scenery, a bevy of new Camino friends, and an entirely different regional culture made our second go-round every bit as enjoyable as the first. If you are interested in a much more detailed account of what hiking a Camino entails, or how to best deal with unisex bathrooms while subsisting mainly on a diet of salami, cheese and stale white bread, I would advise delving into the depths of my travel blog or checking out the book I wrote about our first pilgrimage. For now, though, in the interests of space and time I will focus on comparing and contrasting our two different treks.

Similarities Both hikes were of a similar distance (really long) and resulted in a similar number of blisters (quite a few). Once again, we made a lot of great friends, almost all of whom, once again, optimistically expected to lose a bunch of weight but eventually left disappointed thanks to a carb-heavy diet and daily celebratory cervezas. Since the entire hike took place in Spain again there was, obviously, no shortage of odd little Spanish men to be found, and snoring clearly remains a national pastime.

Differences The Francés route is entirely inland and comparatively flat. Both the Norte and the Primitivo feature far more hills and a much higher degree of difficulty. Proximity to the ocean meant both unique scenery and more rain, and most towns were popular beach destinations. Which meant that we - as filthy, tired hikers trudging slowly through, only stopping for ice cream or beer - were certainly the outsiders among crowds of beach-lovers on holiday. Meanwhile, most of the towns on the Francés, especially the smaller ones, exist almost entirely to service Camino pilgrims so our threadbare clothing and exhausted expressions seemed far less out of place in those locales. Plus, the northern routes only get about one-tenth as many pilgrims as the Francés, making us a less familiar sight in general. Unrelated to the routes themselves, this time around we were carrying an iPhone fitted with a Spanish sim card, providing both the convenience of online maps and the ability to stay in touch with our fellow pilgrims regardless of varying paces, plans and unscheduled wine-tasting stops.

The erratic coastal terrain of this Camino actually forced us to use a few methods of conveyance other than just our bruised and battered feet, including a handful of ferries, a five-minute train ride, and one bizarre subway car hanging from a bridge. Plus, after somehow avoiding bed bugs completely the first time around, we made their itchy, disgusting acquaintance twice this time.

Which may simply be the law of averages but, nonetheless, led to us spending a good deal of both time and money in coin-operated laundromats.

Besides these minor oddities, however, the overall experience was fairly comparable.

Our second journey may have felt somewhat less momentous, probably due to increased familiarity and fewer surprises. I did wear a different shirt, though, which put a fun new twist on the proceedings. Still merino wool, of course, but with a different pattern, so…

Massive Amounts of Donations Come in for Local Cowboy Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Ray Kneeland, the owner/operator of the OK Corral located North of Martensville on Range Road 3051, is a familiar face within the local communities. Throughout the years, Kneeland has held numerous fundraisers to help raise money for TeleMiracle and through these has donated over $400,000 for the cause. The OK Corral has been raising money for TeleMiracle since its 1995 trail ride. Since then, Ray has added other methods of raising money such as; gymkhanas, dine and dances, high school rodeos, silent auctions, steak nights, trail rides and pledges, selling raffle tickets, concessions, collecting bottles, selling chocolate and more in order to raise funds for the major Saskatchewan event each year.

Kneeland, who grew up on a cattle farm in Stettler, Alberta, first purchased the 40 acres of land where OK Corral is located in 1983 and has since shared his “cowboy” way of life with the surrounding communities.

In late 2017, Kneeland was diagnosed with prostate cancer and as of January, he began an eight week radiation treatment plan which has left him unable to continue doing the job he loves; cattle hoof trimming. Ray has been making a living with this since 1969, and being self-employed, he currently has no income coming in. With this in mind, Bobbie Tarasoff decided to create a crowdfunding page to help Kneeland out during this time. “The reason I am doing this is because I believe it’s our turn to help out a cowboy in need. Ray has helped so many in their time of need. If we could help Ray get through this next few months of radiation and pray that he is back up on his feet very soon doing what he loves to do, he will appreciate it more than you know,” Tarasoff commented. As of Tuesday, February 27th,

Kneeland’s years of commitment to TeleMiracle have not gone unnoticed and during TeleMiracle 2017, host Beverly Mahood asked Kneeland why he keeps doing this each year, commenting that he is an unbelievable soul. Kneeland’s response was, “Well shucks, it’s just about helping people out that really need it. It’s just what a guy should be doing.” In 2013, Kneeland was presented with the Hal Rogers Fellow Award by the Kin Canada Foundation for all of his dedication to TeleMiracle. The Hal Rogers Fellow Award is the highest award that is offered by Kin Canada and was established to recognize Canadians by their leadership, accomplishments and community endeavors, similar to that of Kin Canada founder Hal Rogers. Other recipients of this award include; Wayne Gretzky, Celine Dion, Pinball Clemmons and Bob McGrath.

Rail Backlog Again Causing Headaches

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but we appear to be back to 2013 when it comes to moving grains, pulses and oilseeds by rail. According to one report, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways two weeks ago only supplied 49 per cent of hopper cars ordered -34 per cent for CN and 69 per cent for CP.

It’s been another brutal Canadian winter when trains don’t move as well as they should - especially, through the Rockies. However, an even bigger problem is the spike in oil and wheat prices. The West Texas Intermediate price for oil has increased six per cent since November while wheat prices have increased eight per cent on Chicago Futures exchange.

We again have reason to suspect the railways are giving priority to moving oil over other commodities. And that’s a big problem because it seems we lost sight of the problem since the near crisis situation of 2013.

To this, we can blame our politicians, but maybe we all should blame ourselves a bit as well. “In all fairness, everything was going so well,” said Vicki Dutton, a Payton-area farmer and member of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers’ Board. “When things are going so easily, do you ever worry about the future? “I don’t know if we lost sight of the future, but I think farmers are every bit as guilty as government.”

To that end, credit new Saskatchewan Party leader and Premier Scott Moe for at least trying to refocus government attention to this problem. True to his leadership run commitment, Moe has appointed former economy minister Jeremy Harrison to head the new Ministry of Export and Trade Development. It may sound a little more than lip service to a largely federal problem that the provincial government has demonstrated it can`t fix.

Given the failure of former economy minister Bill Boyd to address these issues back in 2013 when he had the co-operation of a Conservative government and local agriculture minister in Gerry Ritz, there seems to be some validity to that.

But maybe the economy ministry is finally past its distractions that in recent years have ranged from the Global Transportation Hub controversy to fights with Alberta over licence plates at construction job sites and stocking of local craft beer on their liquor shelves. And let`s also note Harrison may actually be rather wellsuited to this role. As a former economy minister - and as a former Conservative MP who knows his way around Ottawa - much of his political career has been dedicated to these very issues.

It also helps that Harrison seems to very much like focussing on the details - things like fixing local problems such as rail crossings and sidings to ensure they can be just as big a hindrance. Unfortunately, fixing the seemingly littler problems may do little to solve the bigger problems … or for that matter, new trade problems that pop up every day.

For example, prior to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s trade mission to India, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart urged the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau address India`s pending 40to 50-per-cent tariffs on Canadian pulse crops be addressed. Unfortunately, Trudeau`s trade mission seems to be yielding more controversy than results.

That said, it`s not all bad news for the pulse industry, with the recent successful Saskatchewan bid

by Regina-based AGT Foods and Ingredients for the federal government`s $950-million federal Innovation Superclusters Initiative. Pulse growers need all the help they can get in an increasingly tougher world market.

Dutton noted former Soviet satellite countries like Kazakhstan are emerging as major players in the world pulse market industry. So it`s more important than ever that we do all we can to ensure our producers have a rail system that allows them to get product to market.

Series of Vehicle Accidents Result in Fines February 19, 2018 at 12:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident on Highway 11 near Osler. Police attended the scene and found that a female youth failed to stop at the yield sign and was struck by a south bound vehicle driven by a 53 year old male from Prince Albert. Two occupants of the south bound vehicle were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The female youth was issued a ticket. Both vehicles required towing from the scene.

February 19, 2018 at 5:20 p.m.

Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident on Range Road 3062 near Saskatoon. Police attended the scene and issued a ticket to a 44 year old female from Saskatoon for driving without due care and attention. Both vehicles required towing from the scene. There were no injuries.

February 20, 2018 at 9:58 p.m.

Police received a complaint of a single vehicle accident on Highway 16 near Borden.

Police attended the scene

and found that the 37 year old male driving the vehicle from Saskatoon was possibly intoxicated. He was arrested and taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample.

He was released on documents for an upcoming court date on impaired driving charges.

There were no injuiries.

Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident on Highway 11 south of Warman.

Police attended the scene.

Police received a complaint of a vehicle and pedestrian accident on Highway 12 north of Martensville. Police attended the scene and found that an 18 year old male from Warman was struck. He succumbed to his injuries.

Premier Announces PST Exemption On Agriculture, Life And Health Insurance

Premier Scott Moe announced Monday, February 26th, that he has fulfilled his commitment to reinstate the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) exemption for agriculture, life and health insurance premiums, effective today.

“Our government will help families and small businesses save money, invest and help our province grow,” Moe said. “Part of that commitment is to exempt agriculture, life and health insurance from PST.”

The exemption covers agriculture, which includes crop, livestock and hail insurance premiums as well as individual and group life and health insurance premiums.

Health includes disability, accident and sickness insurance.

The exemption is retroactive to August 1, 2017, the date PST was applied to insurance.

The change has an impact of $65 million on revenue forecast for 201718 and a $120 million impact on revenue forecast for 2018-19.

Moe said the financial impact can be accommodated within the government’s three-year plan to balance the budget by 2019-20.

“Our fiscal plan remains on track, even with this reinstatement of the PST exemption on crop, life and health insurance,” Moe said.

The Ministry of Finance will work with the insurance industry to determine the best way to refund individuals and businesses that have paid PST on agriculture, life and health insurance premiums. More information about how the refunds will be administered will be available by April 10.

Ministry Of Health Announces Long-Term Care Resident And Family Surveys

As part of its commitment to improve quality of long-term care in Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Health is asking residents and their families more directly how long-term care is performing across the province.

In 2017, the Ministry of Health and the former health regions (now the Saskatchewan Health Authority) concluded the first Resident and Family Experience Survey. This survey provides a first-hand account of the satisfaction of residents who live in special-care homes, as well as hearing from their families. More than 2,700 residents and 2,400 family members responded to the survey. The results show that 88 per cent of residents and 83 per cent of family members are generally satisfied with their long-care homes.

Concerns shared by residents and family members are considered as opportunities for improvement. Survey results at the facility level were shared with the Saskatchewan Health Authority so they could plan quality improvement work that corresponds to specific facility concerns. The transition to a single health authority has provided an opportunity to change the way long-term care reporting is done.

These surveys will complement the annual Long-Term Care CEO tours. Officials from the new Saskatchewan Health Authority will continue to visit long-term care facilities and report back results. Starting in 2018-19, the ministry will conduct the Resident and Family Experience Survey every two years.

“Since the launch of the CEO Tours in 2013, we’ve learned a lot, which has helped us to make improvements to benefit residents,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “The Resident and Family Experience Surveys give us the opportunity to harness a greater degree of feedback from residents and their families.”

Fraud Advisory - CRA/Gift card scam

The Saskatoon Police Service is advising the public of a recent increase in complaints regarding the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam.

Police have recently received a few complaints of people advising they have received phone calls using threatening and aggressive language to frighten and bully the complainants into paying fictitious debt. The caller, claiming to be a CRA representative, demands payment in gift cards. The victim is then instructed to provide the authorization codes from the gift cards to the suspect. In some cases, the caller has been told there is a warrant for their arrest. In two reports, the victims were defrauded.

The SPS would like to remind the public that the CRA does not communicate with taxpayers this way, nor does it request payment via gift cards of any kind.

Saskatchewan Residents Hit Hard This Flu Season Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Every year it seems that there are numerous people around us that get hit hard with a flu bug of some kind; however, this year has proven to be one of the hardest hits for Saskatchewan residents and authorities are concerned that it isn’t over just yet.

According to the Government of Saskatchewan, there have been 121 new lab-confirmed cases of influenza for the week ending February 17, 2018 and 2422 confirmed cases since September 1st, which is up from the 1901 confirmed cases that were reported from September 1st, 2016 to April 15, 2017. Since September 1, 2017, there have been 11 reported deaths caused by influenza within the province and 34 ICU admissions.

Influenza symptoms include, but are not limited to: fever, chills, cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea.

Throughout November 2017 to January 20, more cases of the A-strain of influenza were reported amongst residents; however, since the end of February, the number of reported cases of the B-strain has been on the rise. For the week of February11-17, a total number of 88 cases of the B-strain were confirmed, with only 33 cases of the A-strain being reported.

Those being hit hardest by influenza are the working age residents ranging from ages 20-64, with 65+ seniors following. These numbers differ from last year, when the working age residents were the least affected between preschool aged (under 5), school aged (5-19) and seniors.

Although there are still cases of both influenza strains still being reported, Saskatchewan health authorities believe that within three weeks, those numbers will begin to dissipate.

School’s Out Program Proves to Be Popular Addition at MAP Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

During the February break, the City of Martensville offered their new School’s Out! program at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion. This program was developed to provide children with activities on days when there is no school running. The program was something that the residents within the community were looking for, as parents were looking for an option that could provide some physical activity for their children during school breaks.

The City hosted a “kick off” to the program on January 31st and saw great response from the community; however, they could not have predicted how immense the response would be for the February break. Predicting approximately 20 children per day, when the pre-registrations began coming in, it was astonishing to see the numbers doubling. “The turnout was amazing and we weren’t quite expecting that. Each day, we had between 30 and 40 kids, and had to bring in Karly, our assistant to help with the program because there were too many kids for one person,” Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator said. Some had to be turned away prior to the program, as there was no space available for more additions. The program ran from Tuesday, February 20th to Thursday, February 22nd, with a different theme being offered each day.

A drop-in School’s Out day will be held March 12th, which does not require pre-registration; however for the Easter break, Reddekopp noted that parents will be required to register their children beforehand. “It is a new program and people are just learning about it, but we really want to stress the need for parents to pre-register so we can ensure that we have the supplies that we ABOVE: Children participate in a science experiment at the MAP on Thursday, February 22nd, as part of the need on hand,” Reddekopp explained. The School’s Out program new School’s Out! Program. Jocelyn Ottenbreit/MM scheduled for the first week of April will run similarly to the past week, with various themes provided for each day. There will be limited space available so be sure to register early.
