Prairie Sky Chamber Working to Unite Communities Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

In November of 2017, the Martensville and Warman Chambers of Commerce amalgamated into the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) and have since been working consistently to unite the two communities. Most recently, approximately 30 businesses between the two cities participated in the first annual Warman & Martensville Summer Sidewalk Sale. This event took place June 22nd and 23rd and offered retail stores and restaurants the chance to provide some storefront specials to local residents.

Since the amalgamation, the Chamber has seen great success and by uniting, is now the fifth largest Chamber of Commerce within Saskatchewan. “We have definitely noticed that our platform as a Chamber has risen considerably. Our voices are louder, we are attracting more interest from businesses, political figures and with the expanded borders, we have expanded the expertise in our membership, allowing us to bring in more speakers,” Executive Director of PSCC Jaimie Malmgren explained. “The Chamber works hard to advocate for our businesses and as a result of the amalgamation, we now represent close to 200 businesses in our region, making our voices louder and stronger.” In addition to advocacy, the Chamber’s role is to build community and bring people together and this amalgamation has led to more diversification within the membership and expanded the networking borders for businesses. “Both of these are hugely beneficial to business owners,” added Malmgren.

Recently, changes took place within the board structure of the PSCC as Chair Elise Hildebrandt’s term came to an end and Vice Chair Tracey Fesiuk of Martensville Plumbing and Heating moved into the interim position until the October 2018 AGM is held. Director Stephen Nicholson of The W Law Group then moved into the interim Vice Chair position. Hildebrandt was involved with the Warman Chamber of Commerce for many years, initially as a Director prior to moving into her position as President. “Elise played a large role in bringing the Warman & Martensville Business Excellence Awards to our region and was instrumental in the amalgamation of the two Chambers of Commerce.

Her energetic demeanor is contagious and will be missed. I was honoured to work under her leadership,” Malmgren stated.

Fesiuk, who took over as PSCC Chair on June 11th, is looking forward to the opportunity to see the Chamber continue to grow. Having been a member of the Warman Chamber of Commerce for years, and a key component to the creation of the Martensville Chamber of Commerce, Fesiuk has seen the benefits of having a Chamber in both communities, and even more of a benefit of having a united business force within the cities. “I am excited to have this opportunity and hope to continue to see the two cities unite and have the businesses and communities working together,” said Fesiuk. With a goal to continue to encourage regional economic growth, Fesiuk noted how important it is to consistently advocate for the local businesses. “When people are supporting local businesses, they support local families, local employers, and businesses that give back to the community. These local businesses are the ones that sponsor the local teams, donate a scholarship to a graduate or give back to the community in a number of other ways. That is what keeps a community going,” Fesiuk explained. Fesiuk continued that, “Although the communities are so close, there is a lot that we don’t know about each place. The goal is to build within the region as our competition isn’t necessarily with one another, but more so Saskatoon. We want to try to keep people in this area and we have enough to offer them here, all within a close convenient distance.”

With numerous events planned throughout the year to continue to have the two cities working together, the PSCC is looking for business representatives that may be interested in joining the Chamber Membership and Board of Directors. “We are always looking for new people to come in and get involved. With new people, we get different ideas and talents, which is always an added bonus,” Fesiuk explained.

Some of the events that the Chamber hosts, or helps organizing throughout the year include: the Martensville Community Expo, the Warman Martensville Business Excellence Awards (WMBEXA), Small Business Christmas Party, the Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, the Warman Open for Business Exhibition (WOBE), and others. Monthly events include Business before Nine – a breakfast networking event, Business After Hours – an after work networking opportunity where businesses can attend, or sponsor and present information about themselves to other business representatives, luncheons, meetings and more. “We wanted to be able to provide a timeframe that would work for everyone, we try to offer as many different options as possible. It is a great way to get people engaged and to come out and network with one another and learn something new about other local businesses,” Fesiuk added.

Week two in the CFL was filled with absolute blow-outs starting with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa RedBlacks. Headed into the week there was some concern that Ottawa QB Trevor Harris wouldn’t play because of injury but come game time he was ready to go. After the teams traded interception returns for touchdowns in the second quarter the RedBlack ran away with the game and left the Riders in the dust. Chris Streveler now has a 1-1 record as a starter after last week’s 56-10 rout of the Alouettes and now has six TD passes in his first two career starts.

Later on Friday night Hamilton QB Jeremiah Masoli out-duelled Edmonton’s Mike Reilly in a surprising 38-21 win for the Tiger-Cats. On Saturday it was yet another blowout as the Toronto Argonauts lost Ricky Ray in the second quarter. He was carted off the field in a stretcher but reports have said he has full feeling in his extremities and has no concussion like symptoms. Calgary QB Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 343 yards and three TD’s on his way to a huge 41-7 win over Toronto. My picks after two weeks are 6-2, with my winners for week three being Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Saskatchewan.

The NHL season may be over but awards season was in full swing last week in Las Vegas. The Hart Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player went to Taylor Hall of the New Jersey Devils who had a career year with 93-points (39 goals, 54 assists). The Ted Lindsay as Best Player voted on by the players went to Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers who had the most points in the NHL for a second straight year (108 points, 41 goals, 67 assists). The Norris Trophy for the League’s best Defenceman went to Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning who set a personal best averaging almost 26 minutes of ice time a game while scoring 17 goals and finishing with a plus-32 rating. Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender. Rinne had 42 wins this season and was tied for first with eight shutouts. The award for Rookie of the Year (Calder Memorial Trophy) went to New York Islanders young gun Mathew Barzal. Summer Water Conservation Tips

Summer can bring a rise in water consumption and your water bill. Here are some tips to help conserve water during the heat.

• Water your lawn deeply, but not more than once a week. During periods of extended rain, water even less frequently.

• Water new lawns every other day until the grass reaches 5 cm; then water less frequently.

• Set a tuna can in each of your sprinkler zones and time how long it takes to fill it with water. That’s how long you should run your sprinkler once a week if your lawn is dry.

• Use drip irrigation and/or sprinkler systems that are timed to turn on and off automatically. Remember to turn them off if it’s raining.

• Don’t water your lawn during the hottest time of the day. Instead, water early in the morning or in the evening. Don’t water when it’s rainy or windy.

• Check the sprinkler position to make sure you don’t waste water by watering the street, sidewalks or driveway.

• Xeriscape Landscaping – Group plants according to their watering needs.

Plant water-saving plants, trees and shrubs. Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil.

All of this can save 10-35 litres of water per minute.

• When mowing your lawn, only cut the top 1/3 of the grass and leave clippings behind. They will help the soil retain moisture and provide natural fertilizer.

• Wash your car at the car wash. Washing at home with a hose for ten minutes uses 300 litres of water and sends soap, oil and other chemicals to the river through storm drains. At a car wash, run-off is captured and disposed of properly.

• Use a broom when cleaning your driveway or walkway. Washing with a hose uses almost 200 litres of water.

Commencing August 1, 2018 penalties will be added to all outstanding accounts at 1% per month. Property taxes can be paid by debit, cheque, cash or online banking.

Payments may also be placed in the mail slot at City Hall afterhours or weekends.

Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw Due to damage to City property and failure to remedy damages; the City has created the Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw. The City Traffic Control and Waste Bylaws have also been rewritten to set the provisions to access private property through City land.

Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw 2-2016 Permit required Any person or businesses that will be driving a vehicle or equipment over city open space to access private property are now required to apply for a permit prior to gaining access.

Section 6 (2) No person shall carry on the following activities in an open space area without a permit: (a) leave or store personal property; (b) set up a temporary shelter, tarp, canopy or other such device; (c) drive or arrange for a vehicle or equipment to be driven through an open space area; Traffic Bylaw – Dumping of Materials Dumping of material onto city streets is not permitted, any material must be placed on the owner’s property unless permission is granted by the Director of Infrastructure and Planning or designate. Any person or any business who will be conducting work on or around city streets must setup a safe temporary traffic control zone.

Section 4 (f) Any person or company responsible for construction, construction equipment, or material within the highway/street must setup a safe temporary work traffic control zone.

At the request of the Director of Infrastructure and Planning or designate a written work zone traffic control plan may be required prior to approval for installation and setup.

Celebrating Canada Day in Martensville Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Canada Day in Martensville is upon us once again. This will be the tenth year that the Martensville Information & Visitor Centre (MIVC), formerly known as the Martensville Community Access Centre, has organized this event. Each year, the board for the MIVC, along with volunteers, put in countless hours of work ensuring that Canada Day has something to offer everyone. This year however, that workload was doubled, as no volunteers stepped up to join the Canada Day Committee.

Lack of volunteers hasn’t stopped those at the MIVC from digging in their heels and planning a fun-filled day for the community. This year will be similar to previous years; however, instead of beginning the event in the morning, they will instead begin at 3pm. “We have had difficulty getting volunteers and people out earlier in the past, so we wanted to give it a different try this year. We will still have all of the favorites, but won’t be adding anything new,” Kristee Lynn Adrian of the MIVC said.

Some of the items and activities that families can look forward to include cake and ice cream, bouncy castles, a history display, cinema under the stars, fireworks and more.

Other popular items being offered include an art exhibit, brain injury booth, a toddler area, entertainment, a concession, BBQ and of course the famous donut-on-a-string game. Each year, families look forward to ‘Cinema under the Stars’, and this year is sure to be another great family friendly movie! The day is free to attend, and although donations are welcome, they are not required.

Events such as this can’t take place without July 1st, 2018 @North Ridge Centennial Community Centre the help of volunteers, and the MIVC is seeking help for Canada Day. “We need everything from set up, clean up and everything in between.

Volunteers can choose their time slot and the area that they wish to offer their services.

Any time is appreciated; even an hour of their time can make a huge difference,” Adrian explained.

Families are invited to volunteer together, and are encouraged to bring their little ones along to take part in the fun!

If you are unable to contribute your time this year, the MIVC is always looking for people to join their Canada Day Committee. Meetings typically take place once a month and volunteers are not required to be here on Canada Day to help. “We always need help preparing and getting ready before the event. We work on people’s strengths and build from there,” Adrian noted.

Through the years, Adrian states that the MIVC has seen Canada Day in Martensville change and evolve, and although they would love to be able to make the event bigger and better each and every year, without volunteers and funding, it is unfortunately not an option.

Being a non-profit, the MIVC runs through grants and sponsorship, which Adrian notes has seen a decline this year. “Funding is always a struggle and this year we can especially feel it, not just with our events, but with the operating funds at the Centre as well. We have been looking for different avenues to work either with partnerships in the community, sponsorships, and other things,” said Adrian. With a shortfall in funding, the MIVC has been required to cancel some of the programming that was previously offered.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The City of Martensville will once again be offering their ‘School’s Out!’ program at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion.

The program will run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from July 10 to August 16, with different activities planned for each week. Grades 1-4 are invited to take part in the fun from 9am12pm and Grades 4-6 from 1pm4pm.

Sask. Party Aren’t Winning on Rural Pop. Growth

There are ample reasons why rural Saskatchewan will overwhelmingly support the Saskatchewan Party when the next election rolls around in 2020. Sometimes, voting patterns can be a matter of habit. Politicians are aware of this and it becomes the old adage in sales that it is far less expensive to maintain an old customer than attract a new one. So it’s likely that Sask. Party rural candidates will be successful because they have been successful.

Notwithstanding that 11 of their 30 rural MLAs are still in their first term, rural Sask. Party MLAs average about nine years in office. Such familiarity is exceedingly helpful at the polls, but obviously more critical to long runs in elected office is belonging to a party whose philosophy and policies are favourable to your electorate.

Admittedly, this is a party that actually promised very little that was new compared to former premier Brad Wall’s last general election campaign in 2016. Nor did Moe promise much while securing the Sask. Party leadership in January. However, issues like reducing the education property taxes on agricultural land or general support of agriculture and oil and mining that drive the rural economy are all part of a Sask. Party narrative that resonates well in rural Saskatchewan. So does opposition to the federal Liberal government carbon tax that has been Premier Scott Moe’s foremost issue.

Finally, it’s helpful that the Sask. Party’s campaign platforms, government policies and free-

enterprise philosophy contrasts so much with its only real political rival, the NDP. With little Liberal or Progressive Conservative presence in this province, the Sask. Party pretty much has that rural vote cornered.

Add all this up and one can expect rural Saskatchewan to deliver Moe and the Sask. Party another majority government in 2020. In fact, the government has pretty much assured this by deciding not to reduce the number of seats in Saskatchewan legislature. To do so would have meant having to reduce the current 30 rural seats because of rural de-population; however, there is huge irony here. For all of the Sask. Party’s success in rural Saskatchewan, it’s failed in this area most historical critical to rural Saskatchewan.

Earlier this month, the government released Statistics Canada figures revealing a record Saskatchewan population of 1,117,240 - 1,488 more people in the first three months of this year, 11,691 more people in the past year and 157,806 more Saskatchewan people in the last decade.

That’s 48 consecutive quarters of growth in Saskatchewan, the “longest period of sustained growth since quarterly records were first published in 1971” noted Economy Minister Jeremy Harrison. This is surely a grand achievement for a province that’s defined itself by losing people to other provinces, but here’s the thing; it’s not really rural Saskatchewan that’s benefitted by the province’s population boom.

Stats Canada numbers also show that from July 2007 to July 2017, Saskatoon’s census metropolitan area population increased by 79,058 to 323,809 and Regina’s increased by 50,379 to 253,220. That pretty much means 80 per cent of Saskatchewan’s growth has been in the two major cities, alone. With much of the remainder of that growth in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and other smaller cities, we haven’t seen the turnaround in rural Saskatchewan we’ve seen elsewhere and don’t expect one anytime soon.

Net interprovincial migration (those moving into Saskatchewan from other provinces compared with those moving out) was a minus 2,526 in the first quarter of 2018.

From 2014 to 2017, Saskatchewan saw net interprovincial losses of 2,552, 4,897, 5,451 and 9,397, respectively. These are people leaving rural Saskatchewan for Alberta and elsewhere. Obviously, one can’t fault the Sask. Party for not turning around something no government could turn around, but it is a reminder that not even the Sask. Party has been able to turnaround this reality.

Saskatchewan Students Hit The Hardest Due To Recent Budget Cuts

Increased needs, higher expectations on the schools, and recent yearly cutbacks in funding, have left our education system in crisis. Cutbacks in education are negatively impacting student learning. I believe it is very important for all children to receive a high-quality education, as they will soon be our future leaders in various aspects of society. Decreasing the funding for education will interfere with the opportunity for every child to reach their full potential.

In the 2017-2018 budget, the funding allocated to education was cut by 54 million dollars. This follows the significant cuts already made to education over the past few years. There are about 4500 more students in Saskatchewan classrooms this year and 188 fewer teachers and support workers to educate them. As a result, the pupil/ teacher ratio is greater, class sizes are increased, and a less effective education system exists. This makes it extremely difficult for teachers to collaborate one-on-one with their students. With the increased number of students with special needs, it is necessary that there be support staff to effectively facilitate inclusion. If anything, the support structure should be increased, not decreased. With the broad diversity of students’ needs, it would seem more logical to increase the budget, opposed to decreasing it.

This would help lessen the relentless pressure placed upon the teacher and improve the quality of Saskatchewan’s provincial education system.

The Saskatchewan Government may have made these cuts in hopes of saving some money while lowering taxes. The recent recession has also had an impact on the province’s budget, but we must continue to focus on reclaiming the funding that was once designated. Scott Moe, our new premier, said, "It's critical that the funding be restored immediately. We know that a number of support staff, while they're not front-line teachers, they’re important to student learning and achievement." After determining that the funding cut was the wrong move to make, the government has allocated 30 million dollars back into education. However, the remaining 24 million-dollar deficit will impinge on major cutbacks for teaching staff, librarians,

support staff and resources.

Our education system is in definite need of adequate funding. In order to maintain a high standard of education, it is necessary that the government reconsider their budget cutbacks. We want our students to be well prepared and the most equipped they can be, in order to overcome the challenges that they will face. They deserve the best quality of education that we can give them. After all, our students are our future!

The Joys of Hut-to-Hut Hiking Submitted by Dean Johnston

Hiking is good for the soul. Whether a short couplehour jaunt from the hotel or an epic month-long journey, one thing we always look for in a destination is the ability to get out and wander. And, while there are many spectacular day hikes around, there is something about a multi-day trek that simply feels different. More adventurous. The wonderful feeling of accomplishment that comes with reaching your next destination entirely on foot. Yet, in many places it is also possible to combine this adventure and scenery with a roof over your head every night, a place to eat, and bed to sleep in. While these routes go by a variety of names around the world, the most common description is “hut-to-hut hiking”.

Hiking to a new location each day, where you will find cabins, hotels or refuges and enough amenities to both simplify your packing and carrying - no need for tents, stoves, camping gear or any food other than snacks - and to significantly reduce the impact of inclement weather. Hiking in rain or snow is never ideal, but it is miles better than the ordeal of camping in it.

Spain’s Caminos de Santiago are the most obvious examples of this type of trek, but I have already written plenty about them in the past, plus they are really more pilgrimage walks than wilderness treks. But we have enjoyed many other distant rambles around the world, and here are a few of the very best:

The “W”, Torres Del Paine National Park, Chile - Located deep in southern Patagonia, this iconic trekking experience takes you on a five-day journey through a wide variety of mountain, forest and lake terrain. The big highlights are the three “torres” looming over a placid mountain lake and, even though “paine” actually means “blue” in a regional native language, the more obvious translation also seems quite fitting when scrambling up, over and down the various areas of rock and scree. There are refugios providing beds and meals at each stop along the way, and overpriced empanadas are never far away.

The Atlas Mountains, Morocco - This iconic Moroccan mountain range is divided into three distinct regions - High, Middle and Anti - each with their own unique look and feel. Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, is very popular with both those looking to summit and others who are more interested in taking photos of it from below. Numerous small, rustic guesthouses in the area provide a compelling look into Moroccan mountain culture, and if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to sleep on a decorative floor mat directly above a herd of sheep, here’s your chance.

The West Highland Way, Scotland - One the best of many long-distance treks available in the United Kingdom, it runs from Glasgow to the foothills of Ben Nevis, the highest “peak” in Britain at just 1,350 metres above sea level. Despite the absence of soaring mountain scenery, however, the rugged Scottish highlands still provide plenty to gaze at in awe, and the hefty deep-fried “full Scottish breakfasts” can make even the gentlest morning climb feel a bit like Everest.

Mount Mulanje, Malawi - Three days and two nights up, across and back down this impressive stone monolith just a couple hours south of the picturesque shores of famous Lake Malawi. Primitive huts, knowledgeable local guides, sweeping views, and supremely average carrot soup. Need I say more?

The Himalayas, Nepal - My personal favourite trekking destination, and nowhere else really comes close (so far). On multiple visits we have tackled the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp, and each one can make a case for our best trek of all time.

Topping our current to-do list is the relatively new Manaslu Circuit. Inexpensive trekking, friendly people, “teahouses” to sleep in every night, and unfathomable views every step of the way - whichever route you choose, Nepal is truly unbeatable as a trekking destination.

Honourable Mention: The Lycian Way (Turkey). The Southwest Coast Path (England) - There is just something incomparable about committing multiple days to a strenuous physical undertaking, and escaping from the distractions and realities of urban life to travel under your own power. We have trekked all over the world, in a wide variety of terrains and climates and circumstances, and almost all of these journeys now reside among our most memorable travel experiences. And if there is a bed and a beer waiting at the end of each day, well, all the better.
