Beat the Winter Blues with Winter FunFest Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This year marks the 5th year for the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA) Globe Walk and this year’s theme is “Going for Gold”. The purpose of this annual event is to help encourage those that are 50+ to get active throughout the winter months.

In the past, SCOA has rented space within the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP); however, they were unable to do rent space this year, so the City of Martensville has decided to jump on board with the program and offer the space for free for anyone participating in the Globe Walk. In addition, Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator, has stepped up to become the Team Captain for all those participating.

The role of the Team Captain is to encourage older adults to get involved and track all activity within your team before submitting it to SCOA. “We really feel like this program is a huge benefit to older adults being more active and honestly, it has taken off better than I could have ever imagined,” Reddekopp said. With a goal in mind of getting 50 members involved, Reddekopp surpassed her goal and the team is currently sitting at 80 members.

“I am feeling extremely inspired by these older adults. It is amazing to see them embracing the program and getting more active. Hopefully it’s not just here, but in their homes and in their community as well,” Reddekopp added.

The program began this January and will run until April 30th and with it being an Olympic year, the goal is to “earn” medals. Counting steps can help to earn medals for your team, with 1 to 99 miles bringing in a “bronze medal”, 100 to 199 earns a “silver medal” and 200 or more wins a “gold medal” for Team Canada. “It has been really interesting here because there are a few older adults that are almost competing against one another and really pushing each other by comparing how many laps they did. There’s a little bit of friendly competition taking place which keeps them motivated and having fun.” After doing a tally for the beginning of the month, the Martensville team has already earned two ‘medals’ and is quickly on track to earning more and the team continues to grow in size. “It is really exciting and we are ‘Going for Gold’! We want to keep everyone motivated and keep providing different ideas of things they can do to keep active and living a healthier lifestyle.”

The free walk for team members takes place each Tuesday from 1pm to 2pm. If you are not already on a team and would like to participate, sign up is available at the MAP. Other popular walking times available is the Seniors Walking which takes place Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1pm to 4pm for $2.75.

As many of us wait patiently for warmer weather and walking without the fear of falling, the City of Martensville Recreation Department is busy working on a way to help the community beat their winter blues! The annual Winter FunFest is quickly approaching and there will be something provided for everyone.

This family friendly event will take place on February 3rd from 2:00pm to 6:30pm at the North Ridge Community Centre and in the surrounding areas outside. A wide range of all ages activities will be available such as; inflatables, slap shot hockey, bean bag toss, soap carving, balloon fun, clowns, skating, hot dog roast, scavenger hunt, street hockey, sleigh rides, and much more. The event will end with the ever-popular bonfire and fireworks, beginning at 6:00pm.

A new addition this year will be Schlocky, which will be located outside within Kinsmen Park. This is available due to the hard work of employees for the City of Martensville who handmade a schlocky surface. “It is a variation of an outside mini hockey game but you use something similar to a ringette stick. We had seen it done in other communities and

decided that we wanted to do it,” City of Martensville Program Coordinator, Karly Russin said. Other new additions will include an axe throwing demonstration and Singing with Sylvia, an interactive musical experience for kids.

Winter FunFest will include both indoor and outdoor activities, so everyone can come and enjoy themselves.

“There is something for everyone to do.

The little ones can come play in the toddler area and older kids can go outside and play. We wanted to provide as many fun winter activities as we could,” Russin added.

The event, which is held with the support of sponsorship, is one of the biggest events of the year held by the City of Martensville. No admission fee is required; however donations will be accepted and all proceeds will go towards Martensville KidSport.

Russin added that they are still looking for volunteers to help run the various events that are offered throughout the event. If you are interested in volunteering a portion of your time, contact Russin at specialevents@ martensville.ca.

Curling at VMS

Grades 3-6 students had two days of curling instruction as Curling Canada’s Rocks and Rings program passed through VMS this past Tuesday and Friday. Students were shown some proper techniques for holding brooms and throwing rocks and then had opportunity to try their hand at a true winter sport. Grade 7 and 8 students are currently getting a taste of the real thing at Martensville’s Curling Rink and finding that it’s not as easy as it looks. Much fun is being had by all.

Schools Receive Donation for Playground Fund Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Members of the group previously known as The Indoor Playground recently made a donation to the Lake Vista and Ecole Holy Mary playground funds. The group, who worked to bring a location to Martensville where parents and caregivers could go with children ages 0 to 5 one morning each week. This location provided a place not only for the children to make new friends together, but a place for adults to interact with one another as well.

Indoor Playground decided to shut down in the spring of 2015 after the Martensville Athletic Pavilion was constructed and began offering Toddler Time each day.

“It was so similar to our program that we decided we didn’t need two of the same programs, so we donated the toys we had to the MAP for their Toddler Time,” Indoor Playground past President Charlene Herbers explained.

Upon their end, the Indoor Playground had remaining funds in their bank account, which they used to donate to various organizations within the community. The group decided to donate the last remaining amount of $2,216.91 to the playground funds for Lake Vista and Ecole Holy Mary. “The playgrounds at the new schools was the perfect place to donate the remainder of our funds because our playground was for kids. What better place to donate to than another place for kids,” Herbers said.

Christmas Tree Collection Site Winter FunFest 2018, February 3rd A Christmas Tree Collection Site has been set up next to the North Ridge Centennial Community Centre where collected trees will be part of the bonfire and fireworks display during Winter FunFest.

Keeping our Pets Safe During Extreme Cold If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws. At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

Parking the Wrong Way- Traffic Bylaw The Bylaw Department regulates and enforces the City’s Traffic Bylaw. Vehicles parking on the wrong side of the road is a violation that has been occurring on a more frequent basis.

The Martensville Traffic Bylaw 17-2015 states: 3e(vii) No person shall park a vehicle on any street to the left of centre (wrong way).

Enforcement of this bylaw will be increased in response to resident complaints. The penalty for parking the wrong way is $120. Please be a responsible and safe driver.

Parking on the wrong side of the road is an unsafe practice, it is also against the law.

He was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. He was released on documents for an upcoming court date on Impaired driving charges.

Police received a complaint of a hit and run to a vehicle on the 100 block of Railway Street West in Warman. The caller reported that someone hit their vehicle while parked outside of a business in Warman. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

No Charges Laid in Harassment Complaint

January 15, 2018 at 3:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of harassment in Warman. The caller reported that a 59 year old male from Warman was harassing the caller over social media.

Both parties were spoken to regarding this behavior.

They agreed to stop. There were no charges.

Police Provide Ride to Safe Location

January 20, 2018 at 4:14 p.m. Police received a complaint of a female sitting in the centre median of Highway 12 near Martensville.

Police attended the scene and spoke with the 51 year old female from Buffalo Narrows, who advised she was waiting for a ride. She was given a ride to a safer location. There were no charges.

Tide Pod Challenge

There have been numerous dangerous online challenges throughout the years, but the most recent trend has proven to be extremely dangerous. The “Tide Pod Challenge” includes teenagers putting the laundry detergent pods in their mouths as part of a dare, with some biting into the pods. In recent years, the packaging for the pods has been given numerous safety features after small children and those suffering from dementia ingested the brightly coloured pods after mistaking them for candy. Ingesting the pods can lead to severe sickness including diarrhea, coughing, vomiting, lung problems and in some cases even death. The company has taken advantage of social media and launched posts via Twitter featuring New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski to help spread the word that pods are not for eating.

Jamaica Travel Advisory

On January 18th, the Jamaican government declared a state of emergency in St. James Parish due to a high level of violent crimes taking place, believed to be caused by gang activity. Military forces have been deployed in an effort to monitor the violent activity in the affected areas, which includes the popular travel destination Montego Bay. In light of this announcement, the Canadian government has issued a travel warning. The travel warning states, “If you are staying at a resort in the affected area, restrict your movements beyond resort security perimeters. If you do travel outside these perimeters, use transportation arranged or provided by the resort.” They also advise to use organized tour operators for any excursions and travel to and from the airport and that if you are in the affected area to be extremely vigilant.

Saskatoon Search and Rescue Launches Project Lifesaver

A new program may assist in increasing safety for people who are at risk to wander. Saskatoon Search and Rescue (SSAR), with financial assistance from the Saskatoon Police Service Foundation and support from the Saskatoon Police Service, is launching Project Lifesaver Saskatoon.

For many years SSAR has utilized volunteers to provide search and rescue efforts and assistance to organizations such as the Saskatoon Police Service, the Saskatoon Emergency Measures Organization, and the RCMP. Over the past four years, almost ¾ of their activations have involved individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism or other cognitive disorders that are known to cause wandering.

Project Lifesaver is a program that may help to reduce those numbers. A participant in the Project Lifesaver program wears a wristband that emits an individualized radio-frequency signal. In the event that a participant wanders, SSAR members who are trained as Electronic Search Specialists enter the frequency into a receiver and can use the signal to search for, and locate, the missing person.

Initial funding for the project came from fundraising initiatives conducted by the Saskatoon Police Service Foundation. The Foundation is an incorporated, not-for-profit, community-led organization. It is dedicated to raising funds to support projects that contribute to community safety. Additional funding came from Crossword Puzzle Answers D a k o t a Sudoku Answers D u n e s Community Development Corporation, SaskTel and the SaskTel TelCare program, as well as individual donations.

University of Saskatchewan names vice-provost of Indigenous engagement

The understanding and knowledge gained through the inclusion of Indigenous content and experiences at the U of S will help create better and more respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and aid in building a stronger community overall. It will also give all people the opportunity to explore new ways of thinking and learning that aren’t present in traditional Western teaching.

With that in mind, the University of Saskatchewan

has brought back alumna Jacqueline Ottmann, who is Anishinaabe (Saulteaux) and a member of Saskatchewan’s Fishing Lake First Nation, to serve as the university’s first vice-provost, Indigenous engagement.

Ottmann came to the U of S from the University of Calgary’s Werklund School of Education, where she was the director of Indigenous education initiatives, an associate professor and co-chair of U of C Indigenous strategy.

Ottmann said the new role with the U of S was an opportunity not only to return to the campus where she completed her master’s and PhD programs, but also a chance to help shape her alma mater as it places more and more emphasis on the importance of reconciliation, Indigenization and community collaboration.

“I really feel that this position does send a message to Indigenous communities— not only within Saskatchewan but across the nation and indeed internationally,” she said.

“Indigenization is important to the U of S, and the university is being responsive to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and is respectful of the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

“That is a very strong stance, and I think this position will help to affirm and solidify that important message for Indigenous people.”

Ottmann said she looks forward to working with U of S senior leadership to discuss initiatives for the campus as a whole as well as collaborating with individual colleges and departments, and that diving into her new position in the midst of the university planning process offers a unique opportunity to ensure Indigenous voices and perspectives are fully acknowledged.

“We are extremely excited to bring back Dr. Ottmann to take a senior leadership role in focusing on Indigenous scholarship and student success on campus while also helping us engage and connect with the community,” said U of S Presi-

New Premier Faces Challenges Of Wall’s Predecessor

One might not think there are many similarities between Saskatchewan’s last two premiers. Politically speaking, the views of the NDP’s Lorne Calvert and the Saskatchewan Party’s Brad Wall couldn’t be much more different.

However, there are a couple similarities: Both have well-earned reputations as pretty nice guys and both had a fond affection for tinkering with engines. Wall’s preference was for the restoration of classic muscle cars and Calvert’s passion was for restoring old buses. (To each his own, one supposes.) That fond affection for adding life to old vehicles is a talent both seemed to transpose into political life.

For Calvert, the knack for fixing cranky old engines perhaps served him well when he was able to add another six years to the life of the then almost ten-yearold NDP government after being elected Premier and NDP leader in January 2001. It’s a great skill to have and should be quickly adopted by whoever takes over his office after this Saturday’s vote. In political terms, Calvert may have seemed more of the tinkering type.

Calvert inherited a government that was not only in a coalition situation, but also one that was just emerging out of Channel Lake natural gas land acquisition scandal into an even bigger scandal we now know as Spudco.

Massaging the political egos of not only his own NDP caucus members but also the two Liberals he needed in keep this coalition together was no easy feat. Nor was it especially easy to work his way through some tough budgets in the early years of his mandate.

Calvert did manage to hold that coalition until he managed to win a clear NDP majority government in 2003.

He was then awarded with a turnaround in the economy in 2004. One of the ways he was able to do this was finding a way to work through the scandals. His decision to assign career civil servant and his then-deputy minister Dan Perrins to do an objective report on Spudco (the report that led to the demotion of then-economy minister Eldon Lautermilch) was clearly a wise move.

By contrast, Wall was labeled as a master pitchman who seemed pre-occupied with the bigger picture and the aesthetics of running a government.

But while some of Wall’s best political moments were instinctive ones, it was his attention-to-detail that likely developed those instincts. His 2010 decision to stand in defense of the attempted takeover of Potash Corp. by Australian/South African conglomerate BHP Billiton was truly a Saskatchewan moment.

Similarly, his appeal to Saskatchewan people on Facebook to stop racist remarks after Red Pheasant resident Colten Boushie was killed on the farmyard of Gerald Stanley, now charged with murder, speaks volumes to Wall’s instincts to do the right thing.

Wall is not immediately thought of as a detailminded person, but his mastery of government issues was often underrated. Among the most successful government initiatives during his years were those in which he and his government set goals (i.e. targets to reduce surgical wait times).

Perhaps this is why out-going Saskatchewan Premier doesn’t develop his masterful control of caucus and cabinet that - at least until the eruption of the Global Transportation Hub land acquisition issue - generally kept scandal its distance. However, the challenges Wall successor faces may actually be most similar to those of Wall’s predecessor. Like Lorne Calvert, the new premier will inherit a 10-year-old government.

Older governments tend to weaken with age, due to the loss of experienced members and due to the history that is accumulated. The Premier’s job is ceaseless tinkering - dealing with a never-ending array of problems and issues.

Saskatchewan’s new premier should take a lesson from both predecessors on the art of tinkering.

On Wednesday, January 17th, the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) hosted a luncheon featuring the current five candidates vying for the position of Saskatchewan’s Premiere. The new Premiere will be announced on January 27th, so this opportunity provided those attending with a chance to hear each of the candidate’s platforms and voice their questions and concerns to the five candidates. Candidates include; Ken Cheveldayoff, Gordon Wyant, Scott Moe, Tina Beaudry-Mellor and Alanna Koch.

The hour long lunch, which was held at the Legends Centre in Warman, was moderated by PSCC Director James Dietrich who presented the candidates with preselected questions submitted by the audience.

Numerous topics were discussed including; health care, education, government, PST exemption on insurance, carbon tax, infrastructure, and more.

MLA Report From Nancy Heppner Opposition to Federal Carbon Tax

Every province in Canada has now imposed some version of the Trudeau carbon tax – every province except Saskatchewan.

Our made-in-Saskatchewan climate change plan will seriously address the challenge of climate change without a carbon tax. The NDP said we should "check with the feds" to see if that's OK.

We don't work for the federal government. We work for the people of Saskatchewan. The NDP may want the Trudeau carbon tax in Saskatchewan, but we're going to stand up for this province.

The Trudeau government has now released a 236-page draft bill to impose its federal carbon tax on provinces that don’t have one. Saskatchewan Justice is reviewing the draft federal legislation.

We continue to believe that the federal proposal to impose a carbon tax backstop on top of provincial climate change plans is a significant overreach by the Government of Canada and is open to Constitutional challenge.

If the Trudeau government decides to try and impose a carbon tax on Saskatchewan families and businesses, our government will continue our fight to prevent that from happening, including taking court action if necessary.

Creating a Climate for Strong Economic Growth

Ten years ago, our newly-elected Saskatchewan Party government set out to reverse years of decline under the NDP by creating one of the strongest investment climates in Canada.

During a decade of our plan in action, Saskatchewan has added over 60,000 more jobs and maintained among the strongest job and wage growth in all of Canada.

This period of exceptional growth has benefited our province in a variety of ways, including new and exciting opportunities to build careers and contribute to our communities.

We know that there have been challenges for our province’s economy and that has put pressure on businesses, jobs, families, and the province’s finances. We will continue to help diversify our economy by supporting growth in value-added production, innovation and technology.

Our government has also passed amendments to The Income Tax Act, extending the lower 2 per cent tax rate to small business income. This is going to provide greater incentive to hire more workers and invest in new capital. These changes build on our 2011 decision to reduce the small business tax rate from 4.5% to 2%, saving small businesses over half a billion dollars by the end of 2017.

Saskatchewan’s economy continues to show signs of momentum with 5,000 new jobs in December and 17% growth in building permits over the past year.

Saskatchewan’s 12 per cent corporate income tax rate continues to be competitive and among the lowest in the country, further enhancing our province’s significant advantages when attracting new investment and jobs.

Saskatchewan residents will also continue to benefit from lower provincial Personal Income Tax rates this year, which dropped half a percentage point effective July 1, 2017.

Saskatchewan Personal Income Tax rates will drop by another half point on July 1, 2019.

An RBC Economics Provincial Outlook also projects Saskatchewan to lead the country with economic growth of 2.7 per cent for both 2018 and 2019. With a strengthening economy and our population continuing to grow, Saskatchewan is beginning a second decade of growth.

SPORTS Albrecht Shines at Showcase

Martensville’s Carson Albrecht is currently playing Junior A hockey for the Melfort Mustangs of the SJHL. Regina hosted a two day showcase of the Saskatchewan and Manitoba junior hockey leagues on January 15 and 16 and Albrecht was one of six Mustangs chosen to play at the event. Even though he was held off the scoreboard, he showed his ability to cycle the puck and had many opportunities to put the puck in the net. This was the first time this showcase was hosted with the goal being to expose talent from Saskatchewan and Manitoba for scouts all across North America. This showcased the players that could potentially be NCAA prospects. There were 60 players chosen from each league, the SJHL and MJHL to participate in the two day event.

Albrecht has secured the center position with the Mustangs and has 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points so far this season. The Mustangs are in a race for top spot in the SJHL league. They are currently in third with a 28-8-4-1 record. Nipawin currently holds first place with 69 points, Battleford second with 62 and Melfort third with 61. Levi Kleiboer of Martensville is currently playing with the Battleford Northstars and was also chosen to participate in the showcase.

“The experience was great,” commented Albrecht about the showcase event. “It was a great opportunity to play in front of so many scouts and I got to know some of the guys I play against a little better.” He is confident on Melfort’s chances to be on top of the league with the high skill level on his team. It will be a battle in the playoffs.

Skip Amy Remeshylo and her team of Marlyse Steckler, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, and Morgan Speiser qualified this past weekend in Langham at the regional playdowns for the Saskatchewan Winter Games. They faced the Lewis rink of Langham and defeated them in two games in the double knockout format.

The girls will represent the Prairie Central zone at the games on the February break in North Battleford. Amy curls out of the Martensville Curling Club on Thursdays in the Open League and Mondays in the Junior League. The team, coached by Brian Steckler, curls together on Sundays in the Under 18 League in Saskatoon.

The MHS Junior girls' basketball team have had a busy week. They hosted Dalmeny in a home game Wednesday winning a close one 40-38. Malyssa Sader was top scorer with 12 points. The team hosted a six team tournament on January 19. Hepburn, Langham, Perdue, Warman and VCA were among the participants.

Martensville faced Perdue in their first game and won 53-13. They battled hard in their second game against VCA closing the gap in the third quarter but VCA took the win 48-27. Langham and VCA earned a berth to the final with VCA bringing home the gold in a very close 4039 win, with VCA scoring with only seconds left in the game. Warman took third place in the tournament with Martensville finishing fourth.

In order to continue to provide weekly local news to Martensville and surrounding areas, the Martensville Messenger has decided to make a few changes to our distribution. As of February 1, 2018, we will no longer be providing door-to-door delivery of our publication and instead will have papers conveniently available for pick-up at numerous local businesses within the community; Co-Op Grocery store & gas station, Corner Store, New Horizons Senior Centre, Chateau Villa, Golden Sunset Villa, 7-11, fast food establishments to name a few. We will also have our Digital Issue available every Wednesday afternoon at www. martensvillemessenger.ca. The Digital Issue is free to view and is available prior to distribution of our print copy. Through our Digital Issue, you will be able to click on advertisements that piqued your interest and have a direct link to the advertiser’s website or social media page.

The reason for this change is strictly based on the fact that this is a time that people can access all of their information straight from their phones, tablets, desktop computers, etc. and in order to continue to provide up-to-date news, we feel that this change will be beneficial to all in the long run. This was not an easy decision for Jocelyn and I, and we have had many conversations on what the best option is; however, in the end, for us to continue to do what we love to do so much and provide a LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER, this is the decision we have come to.

Many newspapers throughout the country have seen their demise in the past year, and this is something that we will work to avoid as having a local community newspaper is important to us.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

The NHL’s newest franchise is the best team in the league and the Colorado Avalanche are on a nine-game win streak. Those are two headlines no one thought would be true at the beginning of the 2017-18 season. After Colorado had one of the worst seasons in league history last year, they seem to have turned things around this year. Nathan MacKinnon is leading the Av’s with 59 points this season (second most in the NHL) and 18 points on Colorado’s current nine-game win streak.

The streak has vaulted the Avalanche in to the final Wild Card spot in the West, and while there is still a lot of time left in the season, Colorado is no longer the laughing stock of the league. The other big headline is that the Vegas Golden Knights have jumped over the power house Tampa Bay Lightning for the best record in the league (for the time being) at 31-11-4. It’s never expected that a new franchise will even be able to compete in its first few seasons but the Golden Knights have caught on quickly and are looking to be a Stanley cup contender. Vegas is being led by young players like Jonathan Marchessault (43 points) and James Neal (32 points) as well as strong goaltending from veteran Marc-Andre Fleury after returning from injury. The Boston Bruins have also been on a roll lately, getting at least a point in their last 16 games (12-0-4). All those points have them sitting comfortably in second place in the Atlantic Division behind the Lightning. North of the border there is not a whole lot going on. The Calgary Flames had their seven-game win streak come to an end at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets last Saturday during a thrilling shootout finish on Hockey Day in Canada. The Flames still sit third in the Pacific and, along with the Jets, are the Canadian hopefuls for a playoff berth in the west. Toronto is the only Canadian team in the East with real hopes of making the playoffs as they sit third in the Atlantic Division.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are going to the Super Bowl once again. This will be Brady’s 8th appearance in the big game as he looks for his sixth title ring. The Pats had to come back from a 20-10 deficit in the fourth to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and book their ticket to the Martensville & District Kinsmen Super Bowl.
