What’s Happening at the Old Hardware Store?

Curiosity and excitement have been building in Martensville as many residents have noticed the movement taking place at the old Hardware store located across from Tim Hortons. In the past weeks, noticeable improvements have been made to the exterior of the building, piquing the interest of those passing by. What we can’t see is the improvements being done on the inside of the building to reflect a boutique like feel.

On March 1st, the public can officially have a look at the newest business addition to the community.

ClassC Artisans Boutique will be hosting a grand opening celebration that day, and will be open to the public at 10am. That evening, from 7pm-9pm will consist of an opportunity to peruse the goods offered within and to enjoy some refreshments while you shop.

ClassC Artisans Boutique will offer a wide array of handmade goods from over 60 local vendors ranging from food items, clothing, woodwork, pet items, jewelry, household items, artwork and much more. “We will have something for everyone available; men, women, kids, babies, seniors, pets, you name it!”

The concept behind this business stems from owner/operator Chantelle Smith, who has always dreamed of having her own store. Smith, who has been sewing since she was a child, often attended tradeshows and craft sales to display her product and from there, thought that the idea of having a store that could provide the variety these shows did could be extremely beneficial to the community. Vendors pay a small rental fee to Smith and in return, their goods are displayed within the business. Customers then come in and can purchase items, request custom orders and get more information on vendors through Smith. Once a week, Smith will provide an updated report to vendors of what is selling and then they can restock as required. “The vendors don’t have to actually be there. Everything is done through me and I communicate with the vendors on what is needed, or provide the information for the custom orders and once the orders are fulfilled, they bring them to the store for the customer. It is a concept like no other, they rent the space from me and they keep all of their sales.

It is a great opportunity for these small businesses to earn a little extra income,” Smith explained. Vendors are not duplicated, so each individual brings something unique to the business, offering a wide assortment of handmade goods for customers. In addition, the business will also provide custom embroidery and vinyl with industrial machines available on site.

Throughout the summer months, Smith will also be offering additional tables in the outdoor space available.

“It will be open to other vendors, not just the ones located within the store.

We will have everything from baking, vegetables and other handmade goods,” added Smith.

A resident of Hepburn and a mother to three young boys, Smith knows that life is going to be getting busier; however, the excitement of being able to pursue her passion in business creates a noticeable glow within Smith when discussing ClassC Artisans Boutique.

Hours of operation will be from 10am-7pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 10am-9pm on Thursday and 10am-5pm on Sunday; closed on Monday. City Council Update for February

Although work is moving along at Martensville City Hall, there is still work to be done and until complete, Council continues to meet at the Canalta Hotel Banquet Room, with hopes to return to City Hall by the end of March.

On Tuesday, February 13th, during the monthly Committee of the Whole meeting, the first order of business was to present Steve Smith with a memento to thank him for his 40 years of service to the Martensville Fire Department. Following the presentation, Staff Sergeant Eyre and Sergeant Cisecki updated Council on stats from 2017 compared to previous years. Council had questions regarding the decline in Impaired Driving charges, which the two representatives from the RCMP could be related to the government’s work to increase the penalties for drunk driving, which has deterred people from getting behind the wheel after drinking, or that it means they need to be doing more check stops.

Dillon Shewchuk, Community Economic Development Manager for the City of Martensville, presented information to Council regarding a survey that was done this past November on Transportation Network Companies and Ride Sharing in Martensville. The Saskatchewan government announced their plans to allow companies such as Uber and Lyft to operate within the province last year, and the City of Martensville has since been working to gather information and work towards having the opportunity to offer these services in the community. Through the survey, residents communicated that they are looking for options for transportation and that they felt positively about the addition of this kind of service, with some having experienced it in other cities. Shewchuk provided a draft bylaw, which outlined rules and guidelines for the potential service and looked to Council for feedback. In favor of the idea, but looking for more information, Shewchuk will now communicate with SGI regarding the legislation and process and bring back more information to Council at a later date.

February 20, 2018 City Council Meeting

At the February 20th Council meeting, City of Martensville administration provided department updates to Council.

RECREATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE: Recreation Director Dave Bosch noted that the City of Martensville would not be offering a Summer Fun Program this year, and instead, the YMCA would be offering a Summer Fun Camp through a satellite program.

WATER & SEWER: Some residents in Martensville have experienced service water line freeze-ups, which City crews have been working on. The area of 3rd Street South has seen several freeze-ups and the crews have been scheduling and installing drip lines for residents affected by this. Other water updates include the repair of a leaking

hydrant on 1st Street N and 6th Avenue N. A Precautionary Drinking Water Advisory was issued on February 5th due to the nature of the repairs and was cancelled on February 8th.

ROADWAYS: This month, crews were busy grading and hauling snow from the roadways. Once the hauling of snow is complete, larger sized street blades will be installed on the equipment, which will increase visibility and driver awareness on arterial and collector roadways. More details on snow removal procedures can be found at www.martensville.ca.

The traffic lights located at 3rd St. N and Centennial Drive are currently operating on a ‘timing’ default mode while new parts are awaiting installation. In the meantime, this will cause longer wait times at the lights.

PLANNING: Building Permit summary to date is as follows: Single Family Dwellings 3 Multiple Family Dwellings 0 Residential Additions (decks, garages, etc.) 13 Commercial/Industrial 3 Institutional 0 Other (HHB, Disc. Uses, etc.) 8 Total Development Permits Issued – 27 Total Value Added – $1.15M

FUTURE LAND USE PLANNING: The City of Martensville has sent a formal application to the Province for consideration. Background work in the West Sector Plan is underway and background information on the South East Sector Plan is in the hands of the consultant. Landowners within the Sector Plan areas will be receiving letters requesting low level access to their properties as part of the background studies.

BUDGET 2018

The focus point of the February 20th meeting was the City of Martensville 2018 budget. “As the city continues to grow, there is definitely no shortage of projects. City administration has been working diligently to prepare a budget that is fiscally responsible while still planning for the future. Reflecting this work, operational spending will see a 0% increase for 2018,” Mayor Kent Muench noted via Facebook. More information on the budget can be found on page 7.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

VMS Olympic Activity Challenge with Warman Elementary School

On Monday, February 5th we were challenged to a Physical Activity Challenge

by Warman Elementary School. Kindergarten to Grade 4 students were asked to track the amount of time they are physically active outside the school day for the two weeks leading up to the break.

A big thank you to everyone who turned in their Activity Tracking Sheet. Our K-4’s had a grand total of 1090 hours of Physical Activity which is outstanding!!! When we average it out between our K-4 students, it means that our students averaged about 3.12 hours of physical activity these past 2 weeks.

For those keeping score, Warman had 1305 hours during that same span, but also had more students participating so it was pretty even overall. The big winners here are our students for getting physically active outside of school hours!

Geransky Brothers Construction has been a part of Martensville since 1975 when Ed & Irvin Geransky started the business. In 1977, Dennis Geransky joined his brothers and is currently the proud owner & CEO. Keeping in line with the name, Geransky Brothers, Dennis’ sons Ryan and Corey came into the business to work alongside their father as owners. Ryan, who is the Vice President and Corey, who is the Operations Manager, are both proud to be a part of this local business, as they grew up in Martensville and have seen it become the thriving city that it is today. This family business was one of the first foundation companies within the Saskatoon area and has seen exceptional growth since its inception.

Their former location at 531 Centennial Drive North was the perfect fit for numerous years; however, as Martensville continued to grow, so did the needs of the local residents and businesses. This growth made their decision to build a larger location further down the street at 931 Centennial Drive North in 2010 an easy one to make. This location where they are located today was initially purchased by the company and used to store material and equipment; however, proved to be the perfect spot to construct their larger shop where they have journeyman mechanics, apprentices, a shop assistant and a parts department. Proudly SGI certified, each year the company does safety inspections on all trucks and trailers, ensuring everything is running at optimal performance.

Being a local company, Geransky Brothers Construction prides themselves on providing jobs for residents of Martensville and surrounding areas and currently employs approximately 45 employees, with many of them residing in the local municipalities. A large portion of their employees have been employed with the company for ten or more years.

Although the company offers the same services as they did in 1975, since that time, they have become far more diversified in the options they provide to their customers. “We are still doing residential foundations, but we do a far bigger variety today compared to when the company first started,” explained Ryan.

Community is an important thing to the Geransky family, as Martensville has been both their home and the location for their business, so they believe in giving back where they can. Most recently, the company was involved in the construction of the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark. Geransky Bros. was hired to work alongside New Line Skateparks on the concrete for the park. “Kyle’s Brother Riel Syrenne reached out to us and gave us the opportunity to look at the project. We felt it was a great opportunity and we were thankful to be a part of it. The skatepark involved some really unique concrete work, different from what we typically do. It is always nice to be able to give back to the community, and before we would see kids looking for places to skateboard or BMX and now there is a really nice facility for them that was much needed,” Ryan Geransky said.

Ryan commented, “there have been a lot of changes in Martensville over the years and it is crazy to see how different it is from when Corey and I were kids. It is so exciting to see the new businesses and new neighborhoods being added and with the construction of the overpass, who knows what is to come!”

Building on 2017 Success: Infrastructure and Facilities Focus of 2018 Budget

Maintaining and investing in infrastructure and facilities that ensure Martensville continues to be a great place in which to live, work, and invest will be the focus of the budget in 2018. City Council approved the 2018 Budget at the February 20th Council Meeting.

“Continuing to manage operational expenses and identifying the wants and needs of the community have been the focus of our budget meetings over the past number of months,” says Mayor Kent Muench. “As the City moves into 2018 projects, we continue to prioritize the needs of the City and ensure we have the financial sustainability to meet those needs, while minimizing the impact on residents and ensuring their hard-earned dollars are well-spent.”

Projects for 2018 related to infrastructure and planning include the completion of the Southeast Sector Plan, and the annexation of lands surrounding the City. Council has also committed $527,000 to roadways. “This is an effort to work towards an annual roadways maintenance budget of $600,000 to ensure the City’s infrastructure is maintained and at optimum service levels, which we know is important to our residents,” says Muench.

The City’s work to connect the City’s 7+ kilometers of paved pathways leading to Kinsmen Park will continue, and the life span of the aging Sports Centre will be assessed.

In the coming months, the City will set the mill rate based on final assessment values from the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency, and the results of the provincial budget in April. To be diligent, the City has budgeted for a 2% increase in total mill rate revenue.

There will be no changes to the residential base tax levy, garbage and recycling fees, or the wastewater treatment levy. However, in keeping with Council’s commitment to a future recreation facility, deemed a high priority by residents in the Recreation and Parks Master Plan, the recreation facility levy of $25.00 will be increased to $100.00 per property. Overall, the average home owner will see an increase to their municipal property taxes of approximately $102.50 per year or $8.54 per month in 2018.

The City hopes 2018 is another successful year. In 2017 major work was done to ensure needed infrastructure was in place including roadway upgrades from 10th Avenue to 16th Avenue to Main Street, including the City’s first traffic circle, and paving and curbing of Main Street along Lake Vista. “With the two new schools opening last fall, these were high priority projects,” says Muench. “Improved roadways along the Lake Vista area will also open more opportunities for commercial development in the area, enhance residential development, and will be an asset for future growth in the east part of our City.”

Another exciting project was the construction and opening of the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark. “This partnership between the Syrenne family and the City of Martensville has resulted in a wonderful addition to Kinsmen Park,” says Muench. “We know it will be valued by our youth, and we look forward to celebrating the grand opening this summer and to continuing serving the great residents of Martensville in 2018!”

How is Martensville Funded?

The City of Martensville collects the majority of its revenue through property taxes, with other revenue streams helping to fund infrastructure, programs, and services offered. Another significant source of revenue is government grant funding at 21.35%, however this funding has been declining in recent years. Revenues from fees and services comprise 17.93% of the City’s revenue stream. Examples include recreation programming user fees, garbage & recycling program fees, facility rental fees and others. The City continues to look for alternative funding opportunities to ensure we can maintain and grow all that the City offers.

2018 Budget Highlights

Water & Sewer • The $75.00 base tax amount will continue for 2018 to fund a reserve for future waste water treatment. • In May the City will again receive a large rate increase from SaskWater of 9.25%, which we will be passing on to our utility accounts. The City continues discussions with SaskWater and other partners to look for alternative options for the future.

Emergency & Protective Services RCMP • The RCMP detachment will remain at the current staffing level for 2018. This is the equivalent of 8 full time members.

Fire Department & Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) • The Fire Department will be evaluating staffing needs in 2018 and the option of hiring a full-time department member.

Infrastructure & Planning Land Development & Land Use Planning • The Southeast Sector Plan will be completed. • Annexation of lands surrounding the City of Martensville is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2018.

Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance • As per the Pavement Assessment and Pavement Management Plan approved in 2017, Council has committed $527,000 to roadways in 2018.

This is an effort to work towards an annual roadways maintenance budget of $600,000 to ensure the City’s infrastructure is maintained and at optimum service levels.

Recreation & Community Services • We will build and complete a pathway along 10th Avenue South behind the McCormack Ranch area to connect the City’s over 7km of paved pathways leading to Kinsmen Park. • The City will be conducting a facility assessment study of the Sports Centre to determine the life span and aging infrastructure needs.

• Mocon Baseball Fields will undergo landscaping improvements as well as tree planting in 2018.

Trial Has Made for Tough Conversations

Premier Scott Moe is right: Saskatchewan is in need of some tough conversations in the wake of the Gerald Stanley not guilty verdict. He is also being rather politically courageous for showing a willing to take the lead on these very tough conversations.

The fallout from the trial into killing of Red Pheasant First Nation resident Colten Boushie has clearly rekindled a lot of rural emotions about property and safety in rural settings far removed from policing.

As of the writing of this column, more than $100,000 had been raised for Stanley’s defense costs through a Go-Fund Me page. “There was no respect for him or his property,” Mark Pashovitz, who donated $1,000 to the fund, told the Canadian Press. “It could have been me.” Pashovitz, who also farms in the Biggar area about 30 kilometres from where the incident occurred, described Stanley as “a victim of a situation that was totally out of his control.”

Obviously, emotions are still raw. Obviously, people have a right to their opinions … and the right to donate money to whatever cause they choose. But the hard conversation Moe is talking about is about not letting one’s emotions and dictate situations to the point where they get out of hand.

Some anonymous donors to Go Fund Me page have signed their contributions “one less thief” or have made the contributions in the name of politicians like Justin Trudeau or Saskatchewan NDP leadership hopeful Ryan Meili. How is this mature or helpful? Meanwhile, another Facebook page with the unhelpful title “Farmers with Firearms” has popped up.

One of the tough conversations that Moe is clearly talking about is working our way through rural fears without resorting to another incident that leaves someone dead. There has to be a conversation about the use of firearms. Notwithstanding what some think the Stanley verdict was all about, the Canadian Criminal Code does not allow using a gun for defence of property.

In fact, it would be difficult to make the case of using a gun for personal safety, which is likely why Stanley’s lawyer chose not to make that argument in court. If it is a matter of policing, that’s another tough conversation that begins with dollar signs.

One can make the argument that larger and increasingly more isolated farming operations have made policing costs in rural Saskatchewan unaffordable.

However, it’s been pointed out some rural policing costs for some work out to $43 per person per year - a fraction of the $380 Regina residents pay for policing on their annual tax bill.

Do we need a tough conversation on what we pay for rural policing work? Should rural residents be contributing to reserve policing, if that is the solution? This enters another dicey area of both long-standing tensions between rural Saskatchewan and reserves.

Racism has clearly reared its ugly heard in the aftermath of the Boushie trial. Moe made it clear that intolerant hate-filled comments “have never been and are not acceptable” but also acknowledged that racism “does exist not just within our borders.” Sometimes, the toughest conversation you have is the one that comes after a long, hard look in the mirror.

Given some of the social media postings surrounding this case, maybe it’s time as Moe suggests, to acknowledge that we do have a racism problem. That said, any decent conversation must be two-way.

While many of us still don’t recognize the underlying issues that have led to First Nations struggles, there is little doubt First Nations leadership has failed to address crime and other social issues in their own communities. A lot of people need to look in the mirror, these days. We need to have these conversations.

Be Weary of Common Scams Targeting Canadians Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

There are always numerous scams going around trying to convince people to provide money, which is why it is important to be aware of these types of scams. Whether it be a phone call, an email, a text, scammers use any means necessary to try to contact people with fraudulent information. Often, the methods used can be convincing and using a scare tactic, these scammers persuade others into providing personal information, leading to a loss of money, or identity theft.

Phishing scams, used via email are one of the most popular methods being used these days. Often these scams use “brand spoofing” to convince recipients that it is a legitimate business contacting them, asking for users to submit personal, financial or password data. If you are suspicious of an email, look closer, often there are misspelled words, or the email address in which it came from is strange. In cases such as these, ensure that you do not provide any personal information, and report your suspicions.

In 2017, 710 Canadians lost over $17 million to scammers pretending to be in love. With these particular scams, individuals have false romantic intentions towards a victim, wanting to gain their trust and affection for the purpose of obtaining their money or access to bank accounts and credit cards. Most of these scams originate from online dating sites or via social media. Always be cautious when communicating with someone that you have never met and do not share personal information and never send money or accept money, which can be them looking for you to unknowingly launder money.

There are several methods used which involve fraudsters using scare tactics over the phone to persuade victims to send money, often referencing money owing to the government, a loan payment being overdue or convincing victims that a family member is in danger. In cases where scammers tell victims they owe money, they often threaten to have them arrested if the debt is not paid. A common fraud being used currently contacts victims via phone call, text or email, claiming to be from Canada Revenue Agency. In these cases, either the scammer uses a threatening tone stating that money is owed, or instead, provides information about a “refund” being available. If you are contacted and wish to verify a call or email, it is recommended that you contact CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281 or by logging into the CRA website using the My Account service.

Other phone calls consist of scammers telling victims that their computer is in need of updating, or has a virus, requesting that they provide access into the computer, or ask for credit card information. This particular scam can also consist of a pop-up on message on the computer stating that a virus has been detected with a phone number to call.

In January, a popular scam has resurfaced within Canada. The “one ring scam” consists of a phone call from somewhere overseas and curious victims that return the call end up with excessive fees added to their phone bills, some costing hundreds of dollars per minute. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises against returning any missed calls from numbers that are unfamiliar and to watch phone bills for irregularities.

If you are a victim of fraud, immediately contact your financial institution and credit card companies to report any suspicious activity so your accounts can be suspended.

If you sent money to a scammer, contact the source of the money transfer, whether it be via E-transfer, cheque, or wire service. If caught in time, they may be able to cancel it. It is important to report any incidents of fraud that you encounter so others can be aware and help to prevent others from being scammed. These can be reported through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.

Laughs could be heard throughout North Ridge Community Centre the night of February 17th as the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club hosted their third annual ‘Chicken & Chuckles’ event. This year the popular event featured three Saskatchewan comedians; Clayton Kroeker, Myles Morrison and Jody Peters.

The crowd had tears rolling down the faces throughout the evening.

Kroeker, who is a local radio show host, opened up the evening as MC and kicked things off with a bang, with the audience hanging on every word. Kroeker then introduced Morrison to the stage, where he had many couples in the crowd reacting to his hilarious stories of marriage and growing older. Lastly, Peters was invited to the stage and had the entire room laughing out loud with jokes that any resident from Saskatchewan could relate to.

With ticket sales up approximately 10 percent from last year, a total of 254 people attended, many of which have attended the previous year’s events as well. All funds raised from this event will be donated to Kinsmen TeleMiracle 42, which the Kinsmen will be attending on March 3rd and 4th in Regina. “Overall, it was a fantastic event and we want to thank the residents that came out to support your local Kinsmen as well as TeleMiracle 42. Also, a special thank you to the MCRP for all of their volunteers helping out, as well as to Great West Brewing, Blaine Lake Liquor and Variety and Provincial Vodka for their support and prizes,” Arnie Deschner of the Martensville & District Kinsmen stated.

Following the comedians, Deschner announced winners of door prizes, raffle prizes and 50/50 before Jason White donated his talents to DJ and had the dance floor hopping.

The Kinsmen Club are now focusing on TeleMiracle, with the Martensville group providing all of the transportation services for the event. “We transport all of the stars, crew and Kin volunteers back and forth from their hotels to the event centre,” Deschner added.

The local Kinsmen also do all of the donated food pick-ups and deliver back to the event centre to feed all of the volunteers.

Riders Busy in Off-Season

There has been a lot of action going on behind the scenes in Riderville for general Manager and coach Chris Jones and his staff. In Early January, the Riders picked up free agent runningback, Jerome Messam. Messam was signed to the Riders back in 2014 but in 2015 he was traded to Calgary in return for kicker Tyler Crapigna.

He is excited to get back to Regina and see how he can contribute this season. He was named the most outstanding Canadian in 2016 rushing for 1000 yards.

They also signed 3 nationals, runningback Johnny Augustine, defensive back Adam Laurensse, and defensive lineman, Cory Robinson. Augustine comes from the University of Guelph where he registered over 2900 yards rushing. Laurensse comes from the University of Calgary where he tallied 125 tackles and 16 interceptions.

Robinson also comes from the Dinos where he registered 86 tackles and 14 QB sacks.

There were eight Riders that signed contract extensions with the Riders.

Offensive Lineman and Regina native Dan Clark, signed a two year extension with the green and white. Also, on the list were receivers Devon Bailey, Duron Carter, Caleb Holley as well as Offensive Linemen Brendon Labatte and Thaddeus Coleman.

Quarterback Brandon Bridge also agreed to an extension. The Riders acquired Charleston Hughes from the Hamilton Tigercats. Hughes had 11 sacks in 2017, and will add more depth to the defensive end position. Willie Jefferson also resigned with the Riders at the defensive end spot. Jefferson signed with the Washington Redskins in 2016 but the Riders picked him up when he was released in 2017. He was named West Division and CFL all star in 2017.

The Riders released linebacker Willie Knox Junior who is going to pursue his NFL career. Tampa Bay signed him to a free agent contract. Jones is hoping to put together another winning season for the Riders in 2018. Their first preseason game is May 27 in Edmonton. Calgary comes to Mosaic on June 8 for week three of the preseason.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Well after 11 days in PyeongChang the Canadians are sitting in third place in the medal standings with 17 total medals including 6 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze. Only Germany (20 medals) and Norway (28 medals) have more and that is mainly because of Germany’s dominance in Speed Skating and Norway being a powerhouse for skiing.

Figure skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir also received Gold on Monday in the Ice Dance finals. Canada has lots of medal hopefuls to come such as Curling and Hockey as Canada has been dominant in those sports over the years.

In the NHL the Vegas Golden Knights are still clinging to the best record in the league at 39-15-4, just one point ahead of the Tampa Bay Lighting. As for Canadian teams the Winnipeg Jets sit just 3 points back of the Golden Knights for top spot in the NHL and currently lead their division by 2 points over the Nashville Predators. The Toronto Maple Leafs have the second best record for Canadian teams as they sit sixth overall and third in their division with 77 points. The only other Canadian team with a real shot at playoffs are the Calgary Flames and the team now has to count on their back-up goalie 25-year-old David Rittich as Mike Smith went down with a groin injury last week against the New York Islanders. Rittich has been solid in the back-up role and holds a 6-3-2 record but will need to stay sharp if the Flames want to stay in third place in the Pacific division away from the battle for a Wild Card spot. As for the rest of the Canadian teams it has become more of a battle for the best draft pick as they have been all but eliminated from playoff contention.
