City of Martensville School’s Out! Program Provides Fun Option During Break Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

As February break nears, parents may be looking for options to keep their children busy during the days and thanks to the City of Martensville, there is an opportunity to keep kids active, despite the cold weather!

Kicking off the February break will be “Family Fun Day” on February 19th at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP) from 1pm-6pm. This marks the third year this event has been held. Court #1 will feature family badminton and basketball, while Court #2 will have laser tag available and Court #3 will be the toddler play area.

“We want to be able to provide a nice option for people to get out of the house and do something together as a family on Family Day. There is something for everyone to do,” Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator said.

After receiving requests from parents looking for something to occupy their children on days when there is no school, the City of Martensville is now hosting a ‘School’s Out!’ program at the MAP from Tuesday, February 20 to Friday, February 23. Each day will feature a different theme and runs from 10am-12pm for Grades 1-4 and from 1pm-3pm for Grades 5-8 and will cost only $5/day, which includes a full day pass to the MAP. “This program is a good alternative to sitting around over the break. That’s the basic intent of it. It is not intended to be a babysitting service, but instead, something to get the kids moving and having a blast,” Reddekopp noted.

Reddekopp also added that this program would be perfect for those running a daycare, as the younger kids could partake in Toddler Time, while the older kids can participate in the School’s Out! Program.

A “kick off” to this program was held on January 31st, and saw a great response from both parents and their children. The program themes throughout the February break were designed by Ryan Desjardins, a Prairie Spirit School Division substitute teacher who has been contracted by the City of Martensville to run the School’s Out! programming. “Being a substitute teacher, Ryan has the same days off from teaching as the kids do from school, so it works out perfectly. He has experience working with kids and planning fun learning options as well,” Reddekopp added. Each day will consist of its own theme; however, all days will consist of activities to get the kids moving and thinking. “We have had a cold blast lately, so people are staying inside and not getting out and about. This is the perfect chance for them to do that,” Reddekopp stated.

For those interested in this program, you are required to pre-register, so Desjardin can prepare in advance for each child.

You can register by contacting the MAP at (306) 683-5576. The program will continue throughout the winter, and possibly into the spring months.

In addition, the City of Martensville will also be offering additional public skating and shinny times throughout the February break. Times can be found by visiting www.martensvilleschedules. ca/public_skate_shinny.

Martensville Globe Walk Update

The City of Martensville, in partnership with Saskatoon Council on Aging is hosting the 5th annual Globe Walk, with this year’s theme being “Going for Gold”. The purpose of this annual event is to help encourage those that are 50+ to get active throughout the winter months.

Currently, there are 89 members in the Martensville Globe Walk team and they have walked 3430 miles throughout the month of January, earning Team Canada 17 Gold Medals and 1 Bronze Medal. The program will run until April 30th.

Original Member of MFD Retires After 40 Years of Service Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

At the February 13th City of Martensville Committee of the Whole meeting, Council took a moment to show their gratitude to longstanding Martensville Fire Department member and one of the MFD’s original founders Steve Smith. Smith, who is the last remaining original member of the MFD will be retiring after 40 years of service to Martensville and surrounding areas. In 1977, Smith and a small group of local residents saw a need for a Fire Department within the community and started off with a small garage and one truck. Since that time, the MFD has seen tremendous growth within the community.

After welcoming all in attendance, Mayor Muench spoke about Smith’s presence on the fire department, and thanked him for the 40 years of service he provided. “I know residents of Martensville appreciate that you are there and I know the ones that have had to call on you very much appreciate the professionalism and compassion that you all have in those stressful situations. You have made Martensville a better place and I know you have left a great legacy for the other members in the community,” said Mayor Kent Muench.

Smith spoke about how the population of Martensville was 750 people when his family first moved here before thanking his family for supporting him throughout his 40 years of service. “Things came around and we weren’t just a fire department, we were a community organization. We were there if anyone needed a hand and it was just fantastic.

I wish the fire department the best in whatever way they go and I am glad to have been a part of it,” Smith stated.

Martensville Fire Chief Kurtis Dyck then spoke and thanked Smith for his service, commenting that throughout the many years of service, Smith, along with the other original members did much fundraising to continue to build the fire department to what it is today.

“It is people like Steve that make this community great and make our department great,” Dyck said.

Numerous members of Smith’s family were in attendance to show their support to the man who helped make Martensville a safer place for all to live.

Thank you Steve for all that you have done for this community. We all appreciate your service.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays please have your vehicles off City streets.

Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a nonposted area).

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Keeping our Pets Safe During Extreme Cold If your pet spends time outdoors during cold winter days, consider these guidelines and several signs to watch for to ensure your pet is comfortable and safe.

Temperature Guidelines - Certain breeds of ‘sled dogs’ can remain outside for hours, not all dogs fare as well in cold and snow - Cold temperatures should not become a problem for most dogs until it falls below -7°C at which point cold adverse dogs might begin to be uncomfortable - If you have a small breed dog, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old or sick dogs, special attention should be provided if the temperature is below 0°C. - The dangerous weather threshold for outdoor play is -10°C to -15°C no matter the type of breed of dog you have - Once temperatures get below -6°C, health problems like hypothermia and frostbite are possible - Cats should not be left outside Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Winter - Provide a shelter for your dog if it is outdoors for part of the day for any reason. Ensure the shelter is dry, draft free, and large enough for them to move comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. Have the floor elevated and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

- Ensure your dog has access to unfrozen water and fresh food.

- Be with your pet outdoors and watch for signs if your animal is getting uncomfortable. Observe if your dog is shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws.

At this point, it is time to head indoors.

- Extreme signs of discomfort and coldness include frostbite on the tips of the ears or discolored paws.

- Consider protecting your pet against the cold temperature by bundling them up in dog jackets or booties.

- Do not leave a pet in a cold vehicle

Public Advisory Fraudulent Bank Notes

The Saskatoon Police Service wishes to advise the public and businesses after receiving a number of reports of fraudulent bills being passed.

Since the beginning of January this year, a total of 72 fraudulent bills have been turned into Police, in the denominations of $5, $20, $50 and $100. The transparent strip on the fraudulent bills have all been altered. Some bills include the transparent strip from a real $5 denomination.

The small numbers printed within the large transparent strip on a legitimate bank note will match the denomination of the bill.

An image of some of the fraudulent bills is below. A second image, from the Bank of Canada, is available on the Saskatoon Police Facebook page outlining the security features that all polymer bank notes should have.

Police are advising the public and businesses to check to make sure bank notes in their possession are legitimate.

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. A 36 year-old Martensville woman who was headed north on 10th Avenue was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for Proceeding from Stop Sign Before Safe to do so.

It is something that none of us look forward to paying for; however, when disaster strikes, it is something that we are all glad to have. Jaycee Turtle, the Branch Manager at Lakeview Insurance in Martensville is all too familiar with this.

Turtle is no stranger to the world of insurance, as she has been involved with the business since her parents bought the local insurance company back in 1998. At the time, they named it Martensville Agencies, and the business was based out of a small house on a big lot for numerous years. The business brought Lakeview Insurance in as a partner in 2008, which was another family brokerage based out of Winnipeg being ran by a father and his two sons.

In 2011, the lot was sold and the current building at 117 Centennial Drive North was constructed. “It was a big deal at the time as it was one of the first big construction projects on the north end of Centennial Drive. We were so excited to be able to move into the new office space and work on growing our business and although we did plan for growth, we are growing even faster than we originally anticipated,” Turtle said. In 2013, the company officially changed its name to Lakeview Insurance, which was the same name as all of the other offices located in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. “We have a lot of people and a lot of experience at our disposal, which is nice. All we need to do is make a phone call and we can get access to a lot of markets when you have a bigger brokerage to work with,” added Turtle.

At Lakeview Insurance, there are all of the common insurance requirements available; personal and commercial auto, home, tenant packs, mobile homes, seasonal, farm, commercial, bonding for contractors and motor sales, and more. Additionally, Lakeview Insurance has two notaries on staff that will provide the service free to anyone that has a policy within their office, and for those that don’t have a policy, it is a mere $5 fee per signature.

They also have photocopying and fax services available.

One thing that they are unable to offer however is passport photos.

In the past few years, they have worked hard to implement new programs that can better benefit their clients. One example of this is the ‘Elite Hobby Farm Program’, which is not provided by any other brokerage.

This is a policy that is specifically tailored to people living on acreages, but do not farm on the property. “We have worked really hard over the past few years to get this program implemented in our area because it is such a prevalent type of home scenario. It is unique to us and we are proud to be able to provide it to our clients. It is a really good package with awesome coverage and reasonable rates,” Turtle explained.

The coverage is available for small sized acreages, or acreages with a large amount of land, as long as the primary income is made off of the property.

Another option unique to our local brokerage is the ‘Launch’ Marine Program for boats. For all boats that are ten years and newer, this policy provides good rates, great coverage and guaranteed replacement costs on boats, which Turtle says is hard to come by in marine programs. “You aren’t going to find this in any other office in Saskatchewan, or in Western Canada at all. It includes similar things you would find on other marine policies, but it is better coverage, your limits are higher and the rates are competitive.” On other marine policies, much of the wording is more so geared towards oceans and ocean water vessels, whereas, this policy is worded to accommodate boaters that transport their boat to the water and then bring it home to be stored within the garage or a boat house instead of being moored, or staying within a marina.

As a local business, Turtle says they are proud to be able to provide job opportunities for residents of Martensville and surrounding areas, often hiring people out of high school and providing them with a career option. “We love that people can find that career path locally and find a business that they love and a company that they want to work for and build their career on that. It’s exciting,” Turtle commented. Currently at Lakeview Insurance there are seven full time employees, two part time employees and three producers that work from home offices. Having this range of employees offers clients the opportunity to come into the office, or communicate via phone, email, text and even through home and business visits.

Turtle also noted that they encourage clients to provide feedback, good or bad. “We love to know if certain companies or adjusters are doing a great job and we love to know it they aren’t. We can’t fix something if we aren’t aware that it needs fixing,” said Turtle. In addition, clients are also encouraged to ask questions if they are unsure of something within their policy. “We would way rather have that conversation before something happens and be preemptive. The policies can be confusing, so if you are unsure, call us, or come into the office and we will be happy to help you go through it.”

Moe Gets Down to Business

And now for the business at hand….New Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe strikes you as a getdown-to business type. That’s likely a good thing, because he really doesn’t have much time to mess around when it comes to the business of running government.

The recent leadership campaign is now history.

People have said their congratulations. Even the introductions are over. The time has come for Moe to get down to the brass tacks and it appears that he is doing just that.

Last week after Moe’s first cabinet meeting in which he got to sit at the head of the table, the new premier announced “immediate mid-school year funding of $7.5 million” that “will allow school divisions to hire in-school professionals immediately.” It was part of Moe’s Saskatchewan Party leadership promise to restore $30-million in education funding to hire 400 in-school education professionals and to address other school priorities in the coming 2018-19 budget year.

Yes, it doesn’t make up for the full $50 million taken out of last year’s budget. Essentially, only $7 million of that will be restored and education will start 2018-19 with $20 million less than it had in 2016-17, but the fact of the matter is that these are the cards that Moe has been dealt as he takes over the premier’s office.

The challenge for him is to work his way through the array of problems he now faces - no easy task, given that he only has so much money to work with in a province that’s growing but also still recovering from its economic downturn.

Also, straying too far from the course set by former premier Brad Wall - which includes the 2017-18 austerity plans to bring the balance to budget by 2020-21 - is politically problematic for Moe. So the first order of business is get some old business in order as effectively as he possibly could.

Moe was afforded the opportunity to do just that in his first speech to an influential and non-partisan audience — those running our cities, towns and villages attending the 113th Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA). His message to them was equally to the point - expect a “tight” 2018-19 budget that has now pushed back to April 10.

When it comes to the revenue-sharing pool determined by a single percentage point of the now sixper-cent provincial sales tax, Moe said urban communities should only expect $241 million or $16 million less that year. (This, however, was largely based on the downturn in economic performance that resulted in less sales tax revenue.)

Moe also made it known that more discussion would be needed in regard to grants-in-lieu that specific communities get from SaskEnergy and SaskPower. The reduction in grants-in-lieu in last year’s budget came without warning and caught urban communities by surprise. “We need a permanent solution to grants-inlieu,” Moe said Monday. “We are looking to make it a fair program for all municipalities.” Again, this isn’t what SUMA delegates wanted to hear, but maybe Moe's more straight-forward approach will be welcomed.

This is not to suggest that Scott Moe is anywhere close to be being able to replace Brad Wall - something he has acknowledged many times. He even made a joke to SUMA delegates, telling them they will finally get to hear a Saskatchewan premier with a little charisma, but let us acknowledge that maybe one of Wall’s less endearing qualities was to float trial balloons at gatherings like SUMA that never quite seemed to come to fruition.

In fact, after last year’s serious budget cuts, it seems unlikely anyone is in the mood for any games of any sort. So maybe it can be argued that Moe’s get-rightdown-to-business approach is pretty much what’s needed.

Martensville Hosts Playoffs Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The MAP was busy this weekend as MHS hosted the junior girls and boys basketball playoffs. The MHS girls played in the bronze medal game against Waldheim. Waldheim brought home the medals as the MHS girls had difficulty breaking the full court press. In the gold medal game it was Langham facing VCA. Langham won the gold defeating VCA 42-28. VCA were not dropping the shots as Langhams’ #12 Hannah M. shot for 19 points.

In the boys section, the bronze game saw Osler defeating Waldheim 70-69 in a game that went back and forth until the finish that came down to the last shot of the game for the win. Osler forced some turnovers late in the fourth and capitalized with three consecutive three point shots to take the lead.

Waldheim answered back scoring some free throws to regain the lead but Osler made a buzzer beater at the end to win the bronze. The gold medal game saw VCA face Clavet, with Clavet bringing home the 52-51 win in another tight exciting game. VCA was held to only eight points in the fourth but scored some key shots at the line late in the fourth to tighten the score. Clavets’ #16 Travis P. tallied 25 points with one of those coming in the last seconds of the game to help his team capture the gold.

Local Gymnasts Display Talent

Ten athletes from Martensville’s Tumblers Gymnastics participated in the 2018 Marian Classic hosted February 9-11 by Marian Gymnastic Club in Saskatoon. Personal bests were achieved by many of the Tumblers competitors. All athletes competed in four events – vault, beam, bars and floor. The Junior Olympic (JO) three athletes are on their way to qualifying for Provincials in May. Each athlete at this level must meet the standard set by Gym Sask twice in the competitive season to be eligible for Provincials.

All the JO three Tumblers achieved or surpassed that score at their first competition this year. Two of these gymnasts placed in individual events and one finished in the top ten overall for the session. The JO 1 competitors were awarded one gold and two bronze medals overall. Athletes in the JO 2 session finished ABOVE: The MHS Junior Girls Team with two gold and one silver medal overall. The Olympics are underway in PyeongChang, South Korea and some unfamiliar flags were paraded through the opening ceremonies. Due to the Russian doping scandal there was no team allowed to compete under the Russian flag so 169 athletes will compete in neutral colours under the Olympic flag and will be called the Olympic Athletes from Russia. So far the group has a team silver medal in Figure Skating and a bronze in Short Track Speed Skating. The other irregular flag was the Unified team from Korea. The flag showed both North and South Korea together in one solid colour, in unison. The Unified Korean team has yet to get a medal but even competing together is a big step in the politics between the two countries. As for Canada we have seven medals and currently sit in 4th place in the medal standings with two golds, four silver, and one bronze. Canada’s gold’s have come in team Figure Skating and Moguls.

In the NHL it is not looking very good for Canadian teams in the playoffs.

Just three of the seven Canadian teams have a shot at making the playoffs this year. The Winnipeg Jets are the best team north of the border with a 32-15-9 record, just two points behind Nashville for first in the Central Division. Toronto is second among Canadian teams with a 33-19-5 record, good for third in the Atlantic. The Calgary Flames are Canada’s third chance at a playoff berth. Calgary is currently third in the Pacific Division but below them is a gang of teams hungry for a bite of the playoff picture. Six teams in the West are all within four points of the final playoff spot and it will be a battle right to the end.

Another very successful Ladies’ Bonspiel was held in Martensville on February 9-11 with the theme this year being “Rock of Ages”. There were 14 teams entered that kept the rink “rocking” on the weekend as some curlers took their costumes and spirit out on the ice. The Bonspiel consisted of three events with each team guaranteed three games. The banquet Saturday night was served by The Ceasar Mill in Martensville. The ladies were treated to a delicious lasagna meal.

Heather Burnett, the Ladies’ representative and her committee, did a great job hosting this event again this year. They would like to especially thank Martensville Pharmacy and Snipz Hair Design & Spa who were major sponsors. There were also many

sponsors from Martensville, Warman and Saskatoon. “Without our sponsors, we would not be as successful as we are when holding our Ladies Bonspiel,” commented Burnett.

“We thank all who donated generously.”

Every lady was treated to a door prize. There were so many that helped out but Burnett would especially like to thank Joanne Wood, Karen Gruza, Cara Zuchewich, and Kristin Smith with their help hosting the event. The ice was also in great shape thanks to Wes and Chris Guenther.

The finals of each event took place on Sunday at 2:00 P.M. with the Kristin Smith team winning the A Event. The B Event winners were the Hardcastle rink while Team Remeshylo brought home the C Event. The club is hosting an open Spiel on March 10-11.

LVS Celebrates the 100th Day of School

Excitement was in the air as 2R and 2K celebrated the 100th day of school on Monday February 12th. Some students got into character by coming dressed as a centenarian. Students participated in 18 activity centers with the help of parent volunteers.

Our parent volunteers were crucial for the successful flow from center to center. Surveys taken found that the students thought the Spiral graph and the stringing of 100 fruit loops were a hit among all the groups. Many students remarked this was the “best day of school yet.” A big thank you as well goes out to Mrs. Zacharias for coming to take pictures and to Mrs. Friesen who volunteered her time.

On Thursday, the University of Saskatchewan awarded Kaitlin Lockert (right) and Madison Markiewicz (left) with Chancellors’ Scholarships valued at $30,000 ($7500/ year over four years) each! Audience Left in Awe Following Anne Frank Production Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The annual Martensville High School theatrical production once again saw three nights of a sold out audience and those attending witnessed an amazing show. This year’s performance was ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’, the story about 13 year old Anne Frank, who along with numerous others, spent two years hiding from the Nazi’s in Amsterdam during World War II. The production is based on the writing of Frank, who documented her experience throughout their time in hiding within her personal diary, gifted to her by her father.

The stage was accurately designed to depict the small loft in which Anne, her sister ABOVE: Anne Frank, played by Grace Flegel and Peter Van Daan, portrayed by Connor Hamelin, share a tender moment as they turn to each other for comfort during their time in hiding.

Margot, their parents Otto and Edith, Mr. Hermann Van Daan, his wife Petronella and son (Submitted by Mike Kaweski) Peter along with Mr. Jan Dussel lived throughout the two years. Those not in the current spotlight stayed true to their character, interacting (Edith Frank), Avery Smith (Margot Frank) and Dylan Berk (Jan Dussel). TOP: Steven Baldwin silently amongst each other, adding to the integrity of the day to day life the characters were (Hermann Van Daan), Katherine Daku (Petronella Van Daan) and facing; whether in conversation with one another, Connor Hamelin (Peter Van Daan). The cast consisted of ten students from MHS, who each took careful time and consideration in their portrayal of the characters.

Grace Flegel, who played the young Frank, displayed a wide range of emotion and took the audience on a journey of a 13 year old girl who brought life into the dreary circumstances they were forced into and from there to the age of 15, where Anne shows much maturity and tenderness. Anne’s father Otto, who was represented by Brendan Butler, was often the calming voice of reason within the close quarters in which the eight people lived for those long years. Edith Frank (Cassidy Funk) and Margot Frank (Avery Smith), both brought a quiet, supportive sweetness to the stage, often seen in the kitchen ensuring everyone was fed fairly during times where food was running low. Funk did a fantastic job portraying a women struggling as a mother to build a relationship with her teenage daughter under such extraordinary stress. Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, played by Steven Baldwin and Katherine Daku often created awkward moments among the rest of their housemates as they bickered back and forth, while their quiet withdrawn son Peter, (Connor Hamelin) often 18023DA0 kept to himself, wanting only to spend time in his room 18023DA1 with his cat before building a bond with Anne, who at one point questions to herself if she has replaced the cat.

An additional member of the household comes in Jan Dussel, played by Dylan Berk, who Anne was forced to share her room with. Dussel was often irritable, but had moments of rationality and humour. The only news from the outside world came from Mr. Victor Kraler (Noah Fehr) and Miep Gies (Greta Strueby), who would bring supplies for the eight in hiding.

The entire play is based on excerpts from Anne’s diary, which is returned to her father, the only survivor of the eight after the loft is taken by Nazi soldiers and all residents are taken to various concentration camps.

For those that have had the opportunity to take part in one of these incredible productions, it is clear the amount of work that goes into each performance, not only by the cast, but by all involved behind the scenes. The students of the Commercial Cooking 20 class taught by Della Muench, put much care into each dessert available at the performances, providing decadent options for all attending.

With thought already going into next year’s production, one thing is for certain, the teachers and students at MHS are not short on talent.
