Molly Dunville has experienced more in her two and a half years of life than many people do throughout their entire lifetime. The youngest daughter of Martensville residents Kristin and Ian Dunville, and little sister to Lily and Ella, Molly spent her first 11 months as a happy, healthy baby, then the family was told devastating news. Molly was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in November of 2016 after her loving parents began noticing some changes in their smiley daughter.

It was at that time that the Dunville’s saw that Molly was regressing in her walking and began to slow down. Molly was also avoiding putting any weight on her legs and had an unexplained fever. The family made numerous trips to walk-in clinics and then to the emergency room at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. It was here that an MRI was performed to rule out an infection in her hip joint. The results of the MRI changed everything, as it was here that a tumor was revealed to be on Molly’s right kidney in her adrenal gland. “Upon further testing, it was discovered that the tumor had metastasized to spots on her arms, legs, facial bones and in her bone marrow.”

Science Fun at the Library Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Library hosted the Saskatchewan Science Centre Go Science program on August 10th. This educational opportunity brought Kelsey Paton and Vivian Heinrichs, University students hired by the Saskatchewan Science Centre in to teach children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 how fun science can be. This is the second time that the Martensville Library has had the free to attend program come to the community. This year, the program was titled ‘Geeking Out’, which was in relation to the TD Summer Reading Club theme.

“The kids had three hours to learn about different science related topics and had the opportunity to do some hands on building and experimenting as part of the program,” Librarian Marla Skomar commented. A total of 36 children attended and had the chance to construct their own ‘robots’ out of materials that can be found in most households including; a plastic cup, felt markers, a battery, insulated wire and tape. The robots had legs made out of the markers, and using electrical currents, the kids made their robots move and draw pictures on paper.

Kids also had the chance to learn about buildings and worked together to create structures. The stability of their structures was tested by shooting a Nerf gun at them and by using a leaf blower to see how well they were built. “The kids had a wonderful time and it was a great learning opportunity for them. The Martensville Library was able to provide this program to the community through funding assistance from the Saskatchewan Community Lottery Grant,” Skomar added.

This particular program was just one of the many summer activities offered at the local library. The popular TD Summer Reading Club currently has over 500 children registered and families and children are invited to come to the library at any time to make a weekly craft, play I-Spy, grab a board game or Lego and play at the tables, vote in the weekly ‘Would You Rather’ poll and enter prize draws for tracking their summer reading minutes.

Additionally, there is a summer Lego Club that takes place Tuesday mornings from 10:30am-11:30am and Summer Story Time on Wednesday Mornings at 10:15am.

The Martensville Library will also be bringing Code Mobile to the city on August 16th from 10:00am-11:30am to demonstrate some programmable robots and Makey Makey, a tool that uses electrical circuits to turn everyday items into part of the keyboard. On August 22nd, Code Mobile will return from 1:30pm-3:30pm for a Scratch Beginner Coding Workshop

for ages 10+.

Skomar notes that this is a registered program, so invites those interested to call the Library for more details and to register.

There is always plenty of opportunity at the library for all ages.

Currently, they are accepting registrations for all Fall Programs.

There were just three games in the CFL on its 9th week and it all started with an upset. Travis Lulay led the BC Lions over the Edmonton Eskimos 31-23 on Thursday. The Eskies came out hot and were up 20-10 at the half with BC’s only touchdown coming from a punt return. It was the leg strength of Lions kicker Ty Long that made the difference as he finished with three field goals (including a 51-yarder) and a pair of punt singles. Scoring a total of 11-points was the difference the Lions needed to take down the streaking Eskimos who had won their last three games. The win improves BC’s record to 3-4 while Edmonton fell to 5-3.

The second game of the week saw the Winnipeg Blue Bombers improve to 5-3 with a 29-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Two Bomber TD’s in a span of three minutes gave Winnipeg a quick lead in the first quarter and they never looked back. Hamilton would put some pressure on with an early 4th quarter TD to make it 23-26 but a Justin Medlock field goal with just over a minute to play put the game out of reach for the Ti-Cats.

The third and final game of the week was an absolute airshow with Ottawa QB Trevor Harris throwing for an insane 487 yards on 44 completions. His counterpart Johnny Manziel did better than his first game but was still shaky in completing 16 passes for 168 yards but he didn’t throw any interceptions (better than the four he threw last week).

Manziel was able to show his mobility a little more this week as he rushed for 36 yards on three attempts. One of which ended with him getting thumped at the goal line while trying to score a touchdown. He got up under his own power but was very shaky and many people were unsure if he should continue to play but he did anyway and seemed to be fine after the game. The Alouettes fell to Harris and the RedBlacks 24-17 and slipped to a dismal 1-7 on the year while Ottawa stays first in the East with a 5-3 record. After a perfect week previously, I now have my first losing week as my picks went 1-2 in week nine making my record 22-12 on the season. My picks for week 10 are Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, and Calgary.

Public Hearing Held for Proposed Condo Development in Lake Vista Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The August Committee of the Whole meeting was held Tuesday, August 14th and began with a public hearing for a North Ridge Developments condo project in Lake Vista. The proposal consists of 12 bungalow style homes with attached garages. It was recommended that each unit have its own bins for refuse, with space to be provided to store the bins on non-pick up days within the attached garage. As per the Fire Department review, break away bollards will be required in the space between this project and future projects for fire truck access. According to Planning Manager Bonnie Gorelitza, this proposal aligns with several objectives contained within the City of Martensville Official Community Plan, including; providing land for future residential development and supporting the development of affordable housing. Council appeared to be in favour of the project and will bring the topic to the August 21st Regular Council meeting for approval.

Next was an update from RCMP Staff Sgt Rob Eyre, who provided up to date comparisons on statistics from 2016, 2017 and 2018. Overall, the total calls for service have declined from last year, with a decrease in provincial traffic offences, assaults, and thefts under $5000, but he also noted they are short staffed until they replace Sgt. Chris Cisecki.

Leah Bloomquist, the City of Martensville Director of Corporate Services requested some direction from Council regarding a proposed investment policy for the City. The City currently has various funds in reserves for specific uses. These funds are not used in day-today operations, but are located in a regular banking account at the same interest rate. This policy would allow the city to explore opportunities to earn more interest on those funds that are not part of the daily requirements. Bloomquist recommended that Council approve the proposed investment policy at a future Council meeting, following public notice.

Dillon Shewchuk, Community Economic Development Manager, then presented a monthly update to Council, noting that one of the biggest tasks recently has been evaluating the proposals for a Functional Plan for Seniors Housing and Care. “In total 7 proposals were submitted and came from across Western Canada expressing interest in this project. It is anticipated a recommendations for selection of a consultant will come to a future council meeting,” Shewchuk said.

Planning has been taking place for the 2nd Annual SREDA Regional Run, which will be taking place September 15th.

adrenal gland removed. In September of 2017, it was announced that all metastatic disease was gone and the toddler had beaten cancer. For nine months, life began to regain normalcy; Kristin and Ian returned to work, Molly was attending daycare and the family celebrated her second birthday.

As part of her recovery, Molly was required to receive MRI and MIBG scans every three months to ensure her small body remained cancer free. In May of 2018 Kristin and Ian noticed that Molly had a bruise under her eye that did not appear to be healing. Her regular scans were scheduled for June, so until that time, they continued to monitor her for signs of sickness; however, other than the bruise, their daughter seemed fine.

Life once again changed for the young family on June 18th of this year, as Molly’s oncologist confirmed that Molly had relapsed. “Because this was a relapse, her treatment plan would be much more intense than our first time around,” Kristin Dunville explained. Molly will be required to complete five cycles of chemotherapy in Saskatoon, with each cycle lasting five days. There is a two week recovery time in between each treatment. “We have currently finished three cycles. After her second cycle, we travelled to Calgary to harvest her stem cells, which will be used down the road when she receives high dose chemotherapy that will destroy all of her bone marrow.

They collected 300 million stem cells and they are frozen and waiting for Molly when she needs them,” Kristin added.

After Molly completes her fifth round of chemotherapy, the family will travel to Calgary once again where she will receive a cycle of high dose chemo that will destroy the cancer cells, along with the healthy cells. Upon completion, the frozen stem cells will be returned to her body and she will be required to spend the next two months in the hospital, giving her body time to build the immune system back up. “Basically she is completely immune compromised and she will be kept in isolation. Ian and I will be moving to Calgary to be with her and our older two girls will stay in Martensville with family,” said Kristin.

Once the little fighter has recovered from the stem cell transplant, she will then receive immunotherapy, a therapy that uses medication to aide a patient’s immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. “It works by giving her body antibodies that are made to target immature neuroblastoma cells. This process will be done over four months, and we are hoping it can be done in Saskatoon, although to date, it hasn’t been done here. If we can’t do it here, we will head back to Calgary during the therapy.”

The ‘Molly Dunville’ GoFundMe page was created as a way to help the family cover the costs during Molly’s treatment. The additional help will allow the parents to focus on their family during this time, and as requested by the Dunville family, any funds that exceed what is required, will be donated to Neuroblastoma research. In addition to the fundraising page, a family friendly dinner fundraiser will be held Wednesday, September 19th at the North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville.

More information will be released at a later date.

“This has been a difficult road to travel for our family. Prior to November 2016, I never thought about childhood cancer, I certainly didn’t hear much about it and I never imagined we would be living this nightmare. We have learned to take one day at a time, stay present in the moment and not let our fears overcome us. We often use the phrase ‘be brave’ because that’s what we are all doing in our own way,” Kristin stated. On September 9th, the Smallavailable But Mighty Gold Walk 2018 will be taking place in Saskatoon. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of childhood cancers in Saskatchewan. Organized by a group of pediatric oncology families, the walk will take place in the L’Ecole Canadienne-Francaise Pavillon Gustave-Dubois by L’Association Jeunesse Fransaskoise, located at 2320 Louise Avenue. “My hope is that no other parent would have to watch their child suffer from this horrible disease.

Politicians Need Wise Moderation

This very hot summer seems a good time to discuss moderation in politics. Like the weather, our politics has also become overheated. This is not to say that politicians shouldn’t have strong values and beliefs because the formula for success is never about standing for nothing.

Lest there be any doubt of this, consider the wheel spinning we are now seeing in the Justin Trudeau-led federal Liberal government, but, ironically, what’s lacking in the Trudeau government is pretty much the same thing troubling conservative-minded federal and provincial parties and the provincial and federal NDP right now.

It isn’t just that the right has gone too far to the right or the left has moved too far to the left. This may be the reality, but that’s just a symptom of forgetting the fundamental need for wisdom, reason and balance and thinking they can win by exclusively appealing to their own base.

At the end of the day, it’s simply a matter of politicians understanding the value of moderation. You may have your own ideology, but you are elected to address the needs of the people that elected you.

Let us consider this is practical teams, beginning with the Saskatchewan NDP and its leader Ryan Meili.

Recently, crackerjack young reporters Alex MacPherson of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and David Fraser of the Regina Leader-Post did an excellent analysis of why Meili seems to be getting so little traction. Their piece notes Meili’s emphasis on issues of interest to him but, seemingly, of less interest to voters at large. “With a few exceptions such as the Global Transportation Hub boondoggle, the NDP has adopted a scattershot approach, dropping one issue for another rather than banging the same drum long enough for people to notice,” the reporters noted. “Rather than bringing up standard political hot potatoes like health, education and the economy, Meili and his caucus have concentrated on niche issues that, while not insignificant, aren’t big problems for the Saskatchewan Party government.”

While domestic violence, the opioid crisis and environmental concerns are all important issues, MacPherson and Fraser rightly noted they “don’t resonate well in rural areas and small urban centres, which is exactly where the NDP needs to win votes to have a chance of winning — or even making gains — in the 2020 general election.” Issues of gender and equality may meet the approval of the younger urban base of the federal and provincial NDP. However, they won’t provide a moderate balance that will entice broad-base support from people concerned about the debt and deficits, jobs, health care and the economy.

That said it might very well be a reaction to conservatives, who seem to be taking their cue from U.S. President Donald Trump, ideologues on social media or right-wing talk radio where people love hearing themselves and only themselves.

The result of this is conservatives hammering away on issues like the so-called refugee crisis that doesn’t seem to be all that much of a crisis. Whether it’s former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s freelancing or the U.S. tariff issue or conservatives unwillingness to stand with the federal government on Saudi Arabia’s human rights response, conservatives are opting for easy criticisms of Trudeau and forgetting their responsibilities to their own voters. Even here in Saskatchewan we see a conservativeminded Scott Moe government potentially headed for trouble because it’s spending disproportional time on easy issues like the carbon tax and Trans Mountain pipeline.

With debt, dwindling jobs and a lack of services are there no other pressing concerns in Saskatchewan?

The easy path is seldom the right one. Doug Ford will not solve Ontario’s high power bills and massive debt with a buck-a-beer policy. We need to see a return to balance - to reasoned, intelligent moderation that voters really want.

MLA Report With Nancy Heppner Growing Support for Saskatchewan's Carbon Tax Position

After two years of telling us that a carbon tax would not affect Canada’s competitiveness and hurt our economy, the federal government has finally admitted that it will. The Trudeau government recently announced that they will now reduce the amount of tax companies are required to pay on their greenhouse gas emissions.

This new, watered-down carbon tax scheme is still a carbon tax that does nothing for the environment, reduces jobs, and takes money from families.

In March of 2016, the Prime Minister said he would be willing to work on climate change with Canada’s premiers “in the spirit of co-operation and collaboration”. A few months later, his government announced that they would be imposing a carbon tax on every province in Canada. Today, two or perhaps three provinces are actually in compliance with the federal carbon-pricing plan; Ontario has now joined Saskatchewan in challenging Trudeau’s carbon tax in court; and a number of the remaining provinces and territories will not be in compliance.

We accept that climate change is happening, and humans are contributing to the warming of our planet. We’re fighting the carbon tax because a carbon tax doesn’t work. No jurisdiction in the world has imposed a carbon tax and seen a reduction in greenhouse gases because of that tax.

A made-in-Ottawa carbon tax will impact Saskatchewan’s economy to the tune of $1.8 billion annually while only marginally reducing carbon emissions. It is our intent to fight this tax with every means at our disposal.

Our court challenge has moved forward with the filing of our constitutional argument. It is our position that under the Canadian constitution, provinces are sovereign in their assigned areas of jurisdiction. Therefore, the federal carbon tax is constitutionally illegitimate because it applies only in provinces that have not exercised their own jurisdiction in a way that the federal government thinks they should.

It is our position that the federal government has no constitutional authority to second guess provincial decisions with respect to matters within provincial jurisdiction, yet that is exactly what the federal government is attempting to do by imposing a carbon tax only in certain provinces, like Saskatchewan, based on their evaluation of provincial climate change and carbon pricing policies.

A new poll by The Angus Reid Institute shows overwhelming support for Saskatchewan’s court challenge of the Trudeau carbon tax. 88% of Saskatchewan people – and 72% of all Canadians – support our government taking the federal carbon tax issue to court. Unsurprisingly, the move to challenge federal jurisdiction receives near unanimous support here in Saskatchewan.

Meanwhile, Ryan Meili and the Saskatchewan NDP remain completely out of touch and out of step with the people of our province. Content to wave the white flag and let Justin Trudeau force his ineffective tax on Saskatchewan, the NDP are actually calling our court challenge a “pointless crusade”.

We have always said that the provinces should decide for themselves what works best when it comes to addressing climate change. The federal government would be well advised to take a step back, reassess, and reconsider its one-size-fits-all carbon tax. It’s time to give the provinces the freedom to develop climate change policies that actually work, without a federal carbon tax.

Motorists Require Alternate Routes as Work on Overpass Continues Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

As of August 11th, those leaving Martensville will be required to take an alternate route if their typical course included the Main Street exit onto Highway 12. For the next 30 or so days, this intersection will be closed as crews continue work on the overpass.

During the closure, construction will be taking place on access ramps onto the overpass bridge from Main Street. The cross walk at Centennial Drive and Main Street will continue to be open throughout the closure for pedestrians and traffic lights will be modified to accommodate traffic for a 3-way stop.

Alternate exit options are available, with signage recommending that motorists utilize the exit from Highway 305 north on Centennial Drive. Other options include Lutheran Road and Township Road 384 – east on Main Street – to Highway 11. It is recommended that motorists plan for additional time when commuting in order to account for additional traffic on the alternate routes.

Entry into Martensville will continue at the 4th Street off-ramp, which began being utilized earlier this summer.

Travel on Highway 12 throughout the construction area will be single lane in both north and south directions, with speed restrictions in place. “Opening one lane of Highway 12 traffic in each direction at Martensville was an exciting milestone for the Project and it allows remaining ramps and roads to be completed away from the travelling public,” Peter Kiewit Sons ULC, the contractors in charge of the project, noted in their monthly update.
