Play Inspired by Love of Music and Sports Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville resident Todd Devonshire has already achieved much success in life. As a teacher, Devonshire spends most days molding the minds of eager students; however, in his spare time, Devonshire has been working hard to accomplish other dreams that he had set in place.

In 2012, Devonshire’s dream of being a published author came to light with his book ‘Rink Burgers’, a memoir set in Big River, SK that shares with readers the many levels of hockey and how impactful it can be on one’s life.

More recently, Devonshire is excited to unite his love of music and sports in the play ‘Monday Night’, a story about December 8, 1980 - the night that John Lennon was killed.

The play will feature nine characters and three intertwining stories about a reporter that was at the hospital that night, musicians that emulate The Beatles and about Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford; the Monday Night Football announcers who shared the news will millions of viewers. “Music and sports for me are the one-two punch, which is what really attracted ABOVE: Todd Devonshire (Live Five) me to this piece. You have these two worlds of football and music colliding for one of the most dramatic moments in our history,” Devonshire explains.

‘Monday Night’ was created by Devonshire during a playwriting competition in which those participating had 24 hours to write a play. Having created a portion of the play during the competition, Devonshire was awarded with third place and inspired by the success, decided to continue working on his creation. Last year, Devonshire’s play was chosen by Live Five Independent Theatre in Saskatoon for a spot reserved for Saskatchewan playwrights.

“I have always said that there are dates in history where we just remember where we were at the time we heard the news; whether it be 9/11, when JFK was assassinated, or when Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal. I think a lot of people remember where they were, watching Monday Night Football, when they announced the unspeakable tragedy that John Lennon had been killed in New York City,” Devonshire said.

With that in mind, Devonshire wanted to tell the story of how that historical announcement came to be. From 1980 to the current day, the method and speed in which information is passed along has changed immensely. Then, the news took hours to spread, whereas nowadays, it takes minutes. “There is an aspect of history to the play; but it is also a very human element story. The Beatles and Lennon were instrumental to changes that took place in the world and that night we lost something powerful.

I wanted to do a historical piece that shows that one person can really change the world and when we lose hope of that, we all lose. I think what I really want people to come away with, is that no matter how insignificant you might seem, or how small one action may seem, one person can really change the world and Lennon did that for millions.”

Performances of ‘Monday Night’ will take place January 10th-13th and January 17th-20th at Live Five Theatre in Saskatoon.

TRAFFIC Vehicle In Ditch Results in DUI Charge November 27, 2018 at 11:50 p.m. Police were on patrols when they located a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 12 near Lutheran Road. Police found that the 35 year old female passenger of the vehicle from Regina was intoxicated. She was lodged in police cells until the following morning. There were no charges or injuries.

Vehicle Travelling Southbound in Northbound Lane November 30, 2018 at 10:40 p.m. Police received a complaint of a vehicle travelling southbound in the northbound lane of Highway 11 near Osler. The vehicle was described as a small car with dim lights. Police made patrols of the area and did not locate the car.

Police did locate a truck that was travelling in the wrong direction on the highway.

Police spoke with the 75 year old male from Rosthern who was driving the truck. The male was lost and attempting

to find his way home.

There were no charges.

PROPERTY Stolen Vehicle Found November 26, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Police received a complaint of a possible stolen vehicle parked on a property in the RM of Corman Park. Police attended the scene and found that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Saskatoon previously.

The vehicle was towed back to Saskatoon for further investigation by Saskatoon Police service.

Stolen Trailer Found on Rural Road November 26, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. Police received a complaint of an abandoned trailer on a rural road in the RM of Corman Park. Police attended the scene and found that the trailer had previously been reported stolen out of North Battleford. The trailer was towed to Saskatoon for further investigation by the Forensic Identification section.

December 2, 2018 at 12:50 p.m. Police received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle in Langham. Police attended the scene and found that the vehicle had previously been reported stolen from Lloydminster. The vehicle was towed to Saskatoon for investigation by the Forensic Identification section.

Section 57(1) of the Traffic Safety Act refers: Operate an unregistered trailer or semi-trailer. The fine for this infraction is $ 175.00

Be Safe This Holiday Season

The City of Martensville and the Martensville Fire Department would like to remind you to have a safe and merry holiday season. Here are some tips to ensure safety around the home and out on the road.

Placing, decorating and disposing of a Christmas tree: • The tree should be placed at least three feet from any heat source like fireplaces, radiators, candles and heat vents.

• Tree decoration light strings should be approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), discarded if damaged, and never left on when leaving home or going to sleep.

• Trees should also be disposed of quickly after celebrating the holidays.

Smoke detectors: • Remember to check your home’s smoke detectors during the holidays and test them monthly.

• Everyone in your home should understand a smoke detectors sound and know they are to exit a building quickly and calmly before calling the fire department.

Home safety: • Remember to check around the house to ensure electrical cords are not stripped or exposed, not overloaded and not covered with carpeting or other flammable materials.

• Never leave open flames such as candles or fireplaces unattended.

• Never leave cooking pots or pans unattended on the stove or in the oven when preparing Christmas dinner.

Road Safety: • Be sure to check the weather and the province’s Highway Hotline before getting on the road.

• Make sure your car is in good mechanical condition, preferably with snow tires, and plan ahead to ensure you have enough gas.

• If you do get stuck in an isolated area, don’t try and walk out. Stay with the vehicle.

• Always travel with an emergency kit in your vehicle.

The Tampa Bay Lightning currently sit at the top of the NHL standings but just one point behind them is the league’s top Canadian team. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a goal scoring machine this year with the likes of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Kasperi Kapanen all having 10 or more goals this season and defenceman Morgan Rielly close with nine. Mitch Marner may be benefiting the most from the offseason acquisition of Tavares.

Marner has a whopping 32 assists on the season so far, good for second most in the NHL. The Leafs have 38 points thanks to a 19-8-0 record and sit second overall in the league.

Next up for Canadian teams is the Winnipeg Jets, and they aren’t that far behind.

The Jets are being led but their young star Patrik Laine who scored 18 goals in November and currently leads the league with 21 goals. The Jets are tied for 6th in the overall league standings with a 16-8-2 record (34 points). The team they are tied with just happens to be another Canadian team. The Calgary Flames have been hot so far this year thanks to Matthew Tkachuk who has 12 goals and 17 points. While he isn’t the Flames leading scorer, it takes some of the weight off the shoulders of the top line. That is exactly what the line of Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, and Elias Lindholm have combined for 88 points (37 goals, 51 assists). Calgary is at the Top of the Pacific Division and rank tied for 6th in the league with a 16-9-2 record (34 points). After that, it is a bit of a drop off for Canadian teams.

The Montreal Canadiens are currently 16th in the league with 29 points. Montreal has leaned on their star goaltender Carey Price a little too much. When Price is on, so are the Canadiens, when he is off, the team is flat out not good.

The Edmonton Oilers are another team that is relying heavily on their goaltender.

Cam Talbot has not been good this year according to his 5-9-1 record along with a 3.29 Goals Against Average and .889 save percentage. In comes 30 year old Finnish goalie Mikko Koskinen with a 6’7” frame and one last shot at the NHL. Koskinen has now replaced Talbot and has an 8-2-1 record, 2.16 GAA and .928 SV% with two shutouts. If he can keep those numbers up, the Oilers have a shot at playoffs. Edmonton has 28 points to go with a 13-11-2 record, currently 19th in the league.

Just one point behind them are the 12-12-3 Ottawa Senators. The Sens are not great but they are still doing better than most had predicted after a brutal offseason and the beginning of a rebuild. Goaltender Craig Anderson has held his own while facing the most shots of any goalie in the NHL (853) but with his backup only managing a 1-1-0 record, Anderson is taking a lot of shots and he is going to wear out without a decent backup.

The lowly Vancouver Canucks are at the bottom of the Canadian teams and pretty close to the bottom of the league at 26th overall. The Canucks were riding the energy of rookie Phenom Elias Petterson who leads rookies with 22 points (13 goals, 9 assists). That energy seems to have ran out as Vancouver is 1-8-1 in their last 10 games. The rest of the year is probably going to be the same for the Canucks, but on the bright side, they do have a likely Calder Trophy winner as the league’s top rookie.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and watervalves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures.

This hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

- Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

- Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal - In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared off of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

Royals Hold Annual Awards Banquet Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

It was another great year for the MHS Royals Football team as they finished their 11th season. The team had a great season and advanced to the provincial playoffs as they defeated Esterhazy in the first round to make it to a semi-final.

The team’s Awards Banquet took place on November 28 at the MHS Theater. The MC for the evening was coach Lyle Evanisky. Della Muench and her Home Economics students provided a delicious roast beef meal for players, parents and coaches. The roast beef was donated by Country Style BBQ.

After supper Coach Evanisky got the award presentations underway. He first thanked the coaches for their commitment in educating, motivating and preparing the players every week after putting in countless hours.

The MVP this year was awarded to Kody Gutek. Coach Evanisky commented on how coachable he was. “Kody took every word to heart and motivated all the players”. “He showed respect for both his teammates and his opponents”.

Coach Evanisky highlighted the graduating players who committed to the program. These athletes were James Swallow, Tynan Guenther and Brady Ayotte. He commented on how the success of a team is defined by their seniors and their dedication to the team. The players in turn had some inspirational words to say to all of the coaching staff. Quarterback Tynan Guenther commented how Coach Evanisky was so dedicated to the team and made them all better. “He made me a better player and leader of the team”, commented Guenther. The players also commented on how special it was to make a provincial semi-final and attributed that to the hard work of the coaches.

The evening was capped off with a highlight video of the players, prepared by Coach Kobussen, focusing on the memorable events throughout the season.

Coach Evanisky ended with some inspirational comments about the team. He thanked the coaches for their commitment to every practice. He commented on his great coaching staff as each player got individual attention at their perspective positions and as a result, the team showed more development and success. The rookies progressed and he commented on how it was a luxury to have 36 on the roster this year. “When you have that many, it keeps the starters on their toes to keep their respective positions”. This year’s coaching staff was Jack Kobussen, Aaron Oscevski, Shayne Hayward, Vince Riley, Brett Senger, Tynan Pylypow, Joel Hluchaniuk, and thanked Myles Loeffler, Della Muench and Teresa Koop-Hunter for their behind the scenes work. Della is stepping down this year after 11 years of helping manage the football team. Evanisky thanked her for all of her work and contributions to keep things running. Evanisky also thanked the executive parents for all the hours they volunteered and for their fundraising efforts that help keep the team running.

The executive this year was Joni Ayotte, Tara Young, Tasha Gutek, Bonnie Cote, and Ruth Guenther. Another highlight was the building of the spotter’s booth by Lyle Wilson and Venture Construction. It made the concession so much easier. Patti Rowley, the “Voice of the Royals”, was also thanked during the evening for announcing every home game.

SPORTS

Evanisky addressed the players and their commitment. He thanked the players for not questioning the coaches and for putting in hard work as that’s what’s needed to make a great team. He encouraged the athletes to make themselves better in the offseason. “This will help the team to move forward next season”, commented Evanisky. “We were a good team this year and next year we will be great”. “Next season we will be bigger, stronger, and faster to bring home that provincial title”. Great season Royals!

Chamber Launches ‘Love What’s Local’ Initiative Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce is excited to be launching their new ‘Love What’s Local’ initiative, which is set in place to remind residents within Martensville, Warman and the surrounding region to support local. Members of the local business community were invited to attend a business breakfast to discuss the initiative on Wednesday, November 26th. PSCC Executive Director Jaimie Malmgren took this opportunity to explain what the ‘Love What’s Local’ campaign is all about.

The purpose of the initiative is not only to encourage residents to support their local businesses, but also to empower local business owners by challenging their thinking and helping them to understand different ways to keep their customers wanting to come back. Ways of doing this include ensuring that you are providing a service or product that is desirable within the region, offering a personalized shopping experience and ensuring that they listen to what the community is looking for from their local businesses. “We want to empower local businesses by challenging their thinking and encouraging them to tell their story, because stories have a way of cutting through the noise and make an impact on people,” Malmgren explained. By sharing stories about these local businesses, Malmgren believes it will help create relationships and to connect people without tasking them with something to do. With the ‘Love What’s Local’ initiative, the PSCC created a newsletter to share some of the stories about local businesses.

“A successful shop local initiative is not something one person or organization can do alone. Our ‘Love What’s Local’ movement needs all of us to each do our part to spread the word about the importance of supporting our local businesses,” Malmgren said.

Using a metaphor comparing money circulating throughout the local economy to that of blood flowing throughout the circulation system within a body, Malmgren explained the importance of supporting locally. “When you spend money locally, it gets passed along three to four times within the community. When money is spent outside of the region it is

We Need Canada to Return to Small Town Values

Maybe all Canadians need to think of their national community in the same way rural Saskatchewan think of people in their community, but by the same token, maybe people in rural Saskatchewan need to acknowledge their communities are just citizens in the larger Canadian community.

Such thoughts cross one’s mind in light of two big national stories. The first is the struggle in the oil sector. It is caused by the price differential between light and heavy crude oil and the reality that the United States is Western Canada’s only viable customer because of the lack of pipelines to move crude oil to ocean ports.

The second is the planned closure of Oshawa’s GMC plant, putting 2,500 direct employees (and possibly thousands of parts contractors) out of work. There was perhaps a time in this country when there would be more empathy from other parts of the country for those in trouble.

We saw that empathy in federal bailouts in the 1980s and 1990s for farmers and as recently as the 2009 bailout for the auto industry. It may be that there is public fatigue with such bailouts. Clearly, the agricultural bailouts weren’t especially effective at saving family farms. And there was certainly politics attached to them.

We know that in the middle of the 1986 provincial election campaign, Progressive Conservative premier Grant Devine made the infamous call to then PC Prime Minister Brian Mulroney asking for help - not just because farmers needed it but also because he needed it, politically.

Three decades later, what would be interesting to know is how many of those Saskatchewan farmers that benefitted from the ensuing bailout are still farming.

Similarly, it was just a decade ago when then Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed to provide Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors with a massive bailout.

The federal and Ontario government are still owed $3.5 billion from that bailout, yet we are now seeing the planned plant shutdown in the New Year. However, the problem goes well beyond the fatigue with ineffective bailouts that seem to be the problem.

It may be the uber-partisanship - partisanship that seems fueled by the social media that makes it rather easy to never challenge your own views or thinking - that is a cause. Certainly, there seems little doubt that people seem angrier.

Former Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall observed in a National Post article he penned that people are angrier, noting that oil patch executives are calling Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s inaction on the problems in the oil sector “treasonous.”

Given that this is not about a direct federal government policy in question like the National Energy Program (NEP) brought in by his father Pierre Trudeau, this is a rather amazing accusation. This is not to say that the federal government and some easterners have little or no understanding of how tough things are out here.

There is simply no doubt that western oil sales is being badly hurt by the lack of pipelines to deliver oil to alternatives customers, but maybe it’s here where we need to think about how we, as a nation, need to come together as a community. These are real problems in the western oil sector just as there are real problems in the eastern auto sector. These problems are only made worse when we don’t see ourselves as neighbours and also part of the community.

In rural communities, when you saw a neighbour in trouble you don’t stop to assess the person’s politics or which side of the tracks he or she lives on. There is only the desire to help. We need to get back to that as a nation. We need to be a community again.

MLA Report With Nancy Heppner Projected Deficit Lower Than Expected

Two years ago, our government prepared a 3-year plan to balance the budget while keeping our investment climate competitive and ensuring long-term economic strength. While we still face challenges, our province is well-positioned to weather them and emerge even stronger.

The mid-year budget update shows that Saskatchewan’s plan to get back to a balanced budget remains on track for next year. Our financial and economic outlook have both improved with this year’s projected deficit $17 million lower than expected.

While we are on course, there is still work to do. We continue to manage spending carefully, invest in priorities for Saskatchewan people, shift from our reliance on volatile resource revenue and help keep our economy strong.

Saskatchewan’s triple-A credit rating was recently confirmed by Moody’s Investors Service. It is worth noting that when ratings from the three major agencies are combined, our province has the second-highest credit rating in Canada.

Saskatchewan is also forecast to have the third-lowest net debt-to-GDP ratio in the country.

Job Numbers Up But Economy Under Threat

Saskatchewan is also seeing its strongest job growth in four years with 2,500 new jobs in October and nearly 10,000 new jobs since last year. While our economy and finances are improving, we still have the threat of a damaging federal carbon tax, continued sanctions from the United States on our steel and uranium industries, and a deeply discounted price for our oil caused by a lack of pipelines.

Two years have now passed since the Trudeau government rejected the previously approved Northern Gateway pipeline project and since then announced the approval of the Trans Mountain expansion. Fast-forward to today and we have no progress, no pipelines, a regulatory environment that is full of uncertainty, and an oil differential crisis.

Your Saskatchewan Party government will keep standing up for Saskatchewan workers and jobs by calling on the federal government to build Trans Mountain and withdraw Bill C-69 so we can get Canada’s pipelines built and Saskatchewan’s resources to market.

Expanding Trade with India

Last week Premier Moe travelled to India to help grow market access for our exports, highlight Saskatchewan’s attractive investment climate, and advance our post-secondary linkages with India – all of which are key to strengthening our economy and the province’s finances.

India is one of our province’s most important trading partners and holds enormous potential for growth. India’s economy and population are booming and Saskatchewan has what India needs to support that growth. Saskatchewan is a world leading producer of sustainable food, fuel and fertilizer, which gives us the unique ability to work with India to enhance its food and energy security.

Over the past decade, Saskatchewan has exported more than $11 billion worth of goods to India, including $1.15 billion in 2017, more than any other Canadian province or territory. Saskatchewan was India’s largest supplier of lentils and peas. Potash and uranium are other important exports. Approximately 4,550 Saskatchewan jobs rely on exports to India.

At a time when Saskatchewan is on track to achieve a balanced budget in 2019-20, our government’s focus is to continue our work to grow the economy and province, providing the quality programs and services Saskatchewan people expect and deserve.

City Working to Establish Senior Housing in Martensville Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

On Wednesday, November 28th, Dillon Shewchuk, the City of Martensville Community/Economic Development Manager and D. James Leier with Preferred Development Strategies hosted an information session regarding Senior Housing and Care in Martensville.

The event was held at the New Horizon’s Senior Centre and brought out approximately 30 local individuals that had much interest in the topic.

Currently, Martensville is far below the province’s average for seniors living in the community, has very few options for affordable housing and offers no care units to those requiring them. Today, according to information from the provincial health statistics, the community of 10,000 has approximately 445 residents that are 65 and over.

With a large number of young families moving to Martensville, it also brings with it more parents and grandparents wishing to move closer to their family. Also, Shewchuk noted that as resident’s age, it is important to provide housing options for them, so they are able to stay within the community.

Shewchuk discussed the positive impact that providing affordable senior housing and care would have for the community such as; opportunities for growth, economic spin-off, new resources for housing, and more.

The City of Martensville is working with Preferred Choice Development Strategies to develop a functional plan for senior housing, which will include data collection, assessing the current and future needs of local residents and creating a business plan to attract investors. “In the end, what we are going to have is a document that will define what housing and care should look like in Martensville,” Shewchuk said.

Leier then spoke regarding the population growth that Martensville has seen in recent years, and noted that, “projections based on current trends could have the city growing to between 17,000 and 25,000 people in the next two decades.”

Provincially, those aged 65+ make up approximately 15.5% of the population compared to Martensville, where those 65+ consist of 4.6% of the population. “If Martensville happened to have a similar population age distribution on the senior’s front of 65+ to that of Saskatchewan, then really, there would be another 1052 more seniors here. Compared to the level it is at right now, that would almost triple it. When you think of what the potential is for senior housing in town, there is a significant opportunity,” Leier explained.
