Kinette Club Keeping Busy Since Inception

Martensville and District Kinette Club hosted a Charter Night on October 19th to swear in its 23 active members. With many volunteer opportunities and fundraising events already underway we are kicking off this year in high gear and we are so excited. These ladies have been busy volunteering at various functions and businesses, handing out pizza at Venture Heights School and track meet and Halloween helpers earlier this Fall. We love bringing our families along and playing bingo with the residents at Diamond House nursing home in Warman.

Fundraising is a huge part of our club especially at the start as we need funds so we can give back to the community's greatest needs and the Telemiracle Foundation.

Working bingo's is just one way we have been fundraising, we also have Booze Survivor going on umtil December 6th with Make-A-Wish Saskatchewan. You will see us at the Small Business Christmas party on December 7th, helping out the Kinsmen and the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce.

Mark your calendars for February 8th as we will be hosting a fun night with Dueling Piano's at the Brian King Center in Warman. Tickets are on sale for only $55 which includes dinner. Contact any Kinette member or call Jodi at 306-361-9575 for tickets.

Martensville MR MIKES Looks Forward to Another Year of Giving Back to the Community

From November 12th to December 31st, local residents are encouraged to get involved with the MR MIKES Deeds Well Done Campaign, which will see restaurants from across the country each donate $500 towards a local registered charity. In total the franchise will donate $22,000 across Canada through Deeds Well Done.

This campaign has been taking place since 2013, and once the MR MIKES location opened in Martensville in 2016, they became a part of the initiative. Danielle Robson, one of the owners of the Martensville MR MIKES, is excited to once again be taking part in the campaign, as it is a great way to give back to the community. “As a business owner, it is important for us to give back throughout the entire year, but this is such a nice thing to do to end the year. It is a nice little extra boost for a local charity and we like to be able to give back to our community,” Robson said.

In previous years, the Martensville location has donated to charities such as KidSport and Bloom, as well as collected donations for the Martensville Free Pantry.

With donations being accepted until December 31st, Robson encourages guests to either nominate a charity in the restaurant or go online to nominate. “For everyone that nominates, they get a $25 gift card to MR MIKES, so not only can you nominate a deserving charity, but you can enjoy a great meal as well,” added Robson.

Volunteers Needed To Support Local Housing The Martensville Housing Authority is looking for volunteers to serve on its Board of Directors.

The Authority delivers rental housing programs on behalf of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, a Government of Saskatchewan Crown Corporation. The clients of these programs are households with low or moderate incomes, including families, seniors, and people with disabilities.

The Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring the efficient and fair delivery of housing programs and administration of property within its jurisdiction. Board members are not expected to attend to administrative or maintenance tasks personally.

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions.

Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street.

- Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and water valves and be a safety hazard.

- Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently.

- Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place.

- Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street.

-Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway.

-Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area).

-Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks- Crews apply a mixture of salt and sand on our streets and intersections to ensure safer driving conditions. If you are near or behind the sanding truck you are reminded to stay back 15m to allow the truck to disperse materials and to prevent materials from potentially hitting your vehicle.

Our crews strive to deliver excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are several things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

Giving Tree Brings Out the Holiday Spirit

Those shopping at Canadian Tire may have noticed that the Giving Tree is back once again. This has been an annual tradition in Martensville since 2016, inspired by local resident Margaret Nicholls, who had seen the idea at a yoga studio in Ontario. The inception of the Giving Tree began as an assignment in yoga teacher training as a way to give back to your community. Nicholls found that the support for the Giving Tree was so incredible; it was something she wanted to continue to do each year.

The Giving Tree is filled with ornaments that include the name, gender and age of a child.

People are invited to choose an ornament off of the tree and return a gift for that child under the tree

Introduction Of A New Strategy Looks To Reduce Fatalities And Serious Injuries In The Workplace

On December 2nd, a new approach to preventing fatalities and serious workplace injuries that looks at high-risk industries and the tasks within those industries was introduced.

The three-year Fatalities and Serious Injuries Strategy is the product of WorkSafe Saskatchewan, which is a partnership between the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety.

“Safety needs to be a priority in every workplace and across all industries,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “Workplace injuries and fatalities are absolutely unacceptable and leave a devastating impact on loved ones.

I’m pleased that we have been able to work together with a number of stakeholders to develop a strategy with concrete actions that will help to reduce the number of workplace fatalities and injuries.”

The strategy will focus on priority industries and occupations, where the greatest number of injuries to workers are reported. Approximately 2,400 Saskatchewan workers are seriously injured each year and from 2010-2018 the WCB reported 354 fatalities for workers who died on, or as a result of their job.

The three-year strategy outlines targets to reducing the number of injuries and the actions that will be taken to achieve these numbers. The four injury priority areas are asbestos exposure, work related motor vehicle crashes, firefighter cancer exposure and falls from heights.

“Workplace safety is everyone’s responsibility and this strategy looks to build on the work that is already taking place to reduce serious injuries and fatalities,” WCB Board Chairperson Gord Dobrowolsky said. “If we are to be successful, we need to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders so workers go home safely each day.”

Chamber of Commerce Adds New Categories to Annual Awards Gala Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) is preparing to host their fifth annual Warman Martensville and Region Business Excellence Awards (WMBEXA), which will be held on Saturday, May 2nd at the Brian King Centre in Warman. Each year, approximately 360 key community and business leaders from the area attend the event to celebrate business within the region.

The PSCC Board is always looking for ways to build upon the event and listens to feedback provided by the business community. One of the changes being made to WMBEXA for 2020 is the addition of two new categories, bringing the total to seven awards, which include; Community Involvement, Community Service, New Business, Non-Profit of the Year, Large Business of the Year, Employer of the Year and Small Business of the Year. The addition of the two awards was not only based on feedback and celebrating the fifth year of WMBEXA, but also a way to grow the awards and engage with a broader range of awards within the area.

“One of the things that we were hearing from the business community was that it would be nice to have a category geared towards our small businesses in the region that have one to five employees. Some of the smaller businesses may have been feeling a little bit intimidated with our Business of the Year category previously, so this is a way for us to engage with some of them,” Jaimie Malmgren, PSCC Executive Director explained.

Another addition was the Employer of the Year award, which gives recognition to the extraordinary employers that we have in the region. “We often hear from a lot of different people that work in local businesses that they would like to recognize the businesses that do employ people locally and do great things in the area. It is a great way to have employee attraction as well to be able to say that you won Employer of the Year,” Malmgren noted.

Nominations for each category opened on November 25th and will stay open until December 13th. Members of the PSCC will be dropping off nomination notifications during the week of December 16th. Applications will be available in January, and businesses will have 4 to 5 weeks to submit an application. In mid-March, the finalists for each category will be announced.

An added bonus to businesses this year comes from Firebird Business Consulting out of Warman. Malmgren stated that the PSCC was approached by the business, who offered to provide up to four hours of complimentary business consulting to all businesses that submit an application. “This is a win-win situation for everyone; but the big winners are the businesses that will be able to receive some guidance and professional advice from business consultants and as a region, if we can have really successful and strong businesses, it benefits everyone.”

“The WMBEXA event is a big one for us. We are proud to bring the business community together and we hope to get residents involved in the nomination process by nominating their favorite business, or a business that they feel are doing great things within the region. We want to get people thinking about the businesses that they love and it aligns nicely with our “Love What’s Local’ initiative.”

Lake Vista School Community Gives Back For the Holidays Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

This past October, staff and students from Lake Vista Elementary School took part in a ‘Feelings Matter’ campaign, which encouraged them to do something nice for another person each day. Following this initiative, the LVS Student Leadership Team decided that they wanted to continue fostering the caring culture that was growing in the school community.

From there, they brainstormed some ideas that would keep the momentum going and students came up with the idea of gathering gifts for underprivileged children. LVS Teacher Meagen Giannios did some research and came across Samaritan’s Purse and found Lindsay Nemanishen, the local representative for Operation Christmas Child. “Lindsay came to our school and spoke to the SLT about Operation Christmas Child and shared stories about the children who have received gifts in the past. She shared with us that there are children from developing countries such as Nicaragua, Gambia, and Sierra Leone who are living in poverty, living in villages with no power, or running water. Some of these children don’t get to go to school, or have toys to play with,” Giannios said.

According to Giannios, the students didn’t need to hear anymore and immediately began hanging posters around the school, building red and green Operation Christmas Child boxes and handing out pamphlets to get everyone involved.

“We asked if each class in the school could pack one box for one child. Our school goal was to pack 16 Christmas shoe boxes full of toys, school supplies and hygiene products. By Friday, November 28th, we had 60 jammed packed boxes,” Giannios stated.

The deadline for the fundraiser was Monday, December 2nd and from there, all boxes were counted and sent to Calgary for processing.

“Students and their families went above and beyond our school goal, and pulled together to really do something amazing. Not only did we accomplish our school goal, but with the holiday season quickly approaching, we got an opportunity to do what really matters; to reflect on what we can do for others and show that we care. I’m so proud of the students, families and staff that make up Lake Vista Public School.”

Early Start From Stop Sign Leads to Martensville Accident At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of Main Street and 10th Avenue where members of Martensville’s Fire Department (MFD) were also on scene. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of the accident. Rail Strikes Reveals Problems In Need Of Fixing

Now that the railways are running again, perhaps now is a good time to turn our attention to problems spilling out from the week-long CN strike.

Many of those problems are directly related to the vital nature of CN and CP rail services, but maybe now is also a pretty good time to start understanding the source of the problems that caused the strike in the first place.

Understanding both would surely go a long ways towards understanding the problems we all share in this country.

It has to begin with everyone understanding how big a problem a rail strike actually is. As per observations made in this space a week ago, November was not a good time for the 5,650 hopper cars per week to be standing idle. It’s not a particular great crop in quality, but there’s a lot of it and it has to be moved.

As of this month, the weekly grain car allotment is expected to be reduced to 4,150 cars a week and is expected to stay at that level until March.

A tough winter with shipping delays would be devastating, so the focus clearly needs to be finding ways to head off anticipated problems in the moving grain, oil and other products vital to the Western economy.

One thing that would seem to be in order is essential services legislation for the CN/CP duopoly that is our Canadian rail system. Premier Scott Moe and others were making the case for such measures, arguing that our economy could not afford another minute of a CN shutdown.

The problem, however, is that the longstanding issue of freight costs would not be eased by essential services legislation. It’s not unduly suspicious to think this would, very quickly, become an excuse for the rail companies to up their rates.

Certainly, the issue between CN Rail and the Teamsters Canada involving public safety, conductors and others working excessively long hours to deal with backlogs and car shortages, would require more hiring to deal with such an issue.

That, of course, would mean higher costs passed on to farmers. Having essential services legislation would take away the employer/union ability to work out a better solution.

The same thing can be said for back-to-work legislation that cannot be passed quickly because of the practical delays in recalling the House of Commons.

This begs the question whether it was simply better to have allowed the CN strike play out as it did by using public and political pressure to force both sides to force an equitable settlement at the bargaining table.

Unfortunately, it does seem to be increasingly difficult to bridge such differences in a world where it’s getting tougher to see the problem from someone else’s perspective, even when that problem is shared.

One gets why many might not have much sympathy for well-paid, unionized rail workers when your own livelihood has so few guarantees. It’s simply been tough on farmers this year and it creates the kind of mental health stress we don’t talk enough about.

Certainly, it’s not something that city people much think about and when you add the notion of the trains not running, it only adds to the stress, but for as easy as it is to be mad at striking workers - and the railways, in general - there is at least one reason to sympathize.

If anyone can relate to the complaints and concerns of those 3,200 teamsters - the stress, hardships, pressure and dangers of long hours in the cab of big machinery - it’s surely farmers. Maybe we will do better at solving our problems if we recognize that others may share them.

Our government’s plan is to triple the growth of Saskatchewan’s technology sector by 2030. This includes: • Aggressively pursuing new measures to retain and attract large-scale tech employers in Saskatchewan to anchor the province’s technology ecosystem; • Ensuring investors are aware and accessing Saskatchewan’s “Patent Box” incentive which reduces the corporate tax rate to six per cent for income taxes generated through the commercialization of innovation in Saskatchewan; • Supporting the Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive (STSI). Introduced in 2018, the STSI has addressed a need for capital investment in emerging startups in Saskatchewan. As of April 2019, 26 companies and 83 investors have been approved for tax credits that have triggered over $3 million in private investment; • Supporting the Made-in-Saskatchewan Technology (MIST) program to allow companies access to public sector partners to test and refine their technologies and serve as a launching pad towards new sales and customers; and • Positioning government as a test-bed and platform for the adoption of Saskatchewan-based technology to create made-in-Saskatchewan solutions to public sector challenges. This will assist technology entrepreneurs in our province to land their first major customer, validate their technology and • commercialize their innovation – creating new businesses and jobs.

With the first two months of the season in the books, most NHL teams are rounding into what they might look like for the rest of the season. I will run down the Canadian teams, but first I have to highlight how good the Boston Bruins have been so far. I know they are certainly not most Canadians favourite team but when they are this hot you have to mention them.

The Bruins have only lost 3 games in regulation this year and sit at the top of the league with a record of 19-3-5 (43 points). Brad Marchand (43 points) and David Pastrnak (42 points) are currently 3rd and 4th in league scoring and Pastrnak already has an absurd 25 goals. The Bruins have always been a good team in the past and did make it to the Stanley Cup Finals last year, but they look even more dangerous this season.

As for Canadian teams (and as a Flames fan it kills me to say this but) the Edmonton Oilers may have finally figured it out. They are 5th overall in the league and are at the top of the Pacific Division with a 17-9-3 record. Edmonton is being led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who have a combined 101 points (McDavid 51, Draisaitl 50) and are sitting 1st and 2nd in the scoring race. Things do dramatically drop off after that for the Oilers as Zack Kassian is third in team scoring with 19 points. If the Oilers big names can stay healthy throughout the season and playoffs, Edmonton has a real shot at hoisting Lord Stanley.

In second place out of the Canadian teams the Winnipeg Jets are 10th overall in the league with a 16-10-1 record. The Jets lost 4 of their core defenceman over the summer and seem to have handled things decently. They may not be the powerhouse they were last season but they are 3rd in the Central Division and should be a playoff team.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are next on the list after a very disappointing start to their season that resulted in the firing of head coach Mike Babcock. The Leafs were 9-10-4 and had lost 6-in a row before they booted Babcock. Since then they have gone 4-1 under new coach Sheldon Keefe. Toronto has also been missing Mitch Marner who sustained an ankle injury in mid-November but he is set to make his return sometime this week and will be a huge boost to the Leafs who are currently 17th in the league and 4th in the Atlantic Division.

Tied with those Leafs at 13-11-4 are the Vancouver Canucks who are being led by their young guns. Twenty-one year old Elias Petterson leads the team with 31 points while rookie defenceman Quinn Hughes has been lighting it up with 23 points in 27 games this season. The Canucks are currently one point out of a playoff spot, placing 18th overall and 5th in the Pacific Division.

Keeping things in the Pacific Division the Calgary Flames are also just one point out of the playoffs with a 13-12-4 record. The Flames went through some drama last week as head coach Bill Peters resigned from his position and is no longer a part of the organization after reports of him using racial slurs what brought to attention. This was all happening while Calgary was in the midst of a 6-game losing streak that has since ended.

Geoff Ward has been named the Interim head coach for now.

Keeping down the list we hit the Montreal Canadians who just have not been good. Usually when the Canadians are bad they can rely on Carey Price to steal them a few wins but that has not been the case this season. Price is 10-9-3 this year which doesn’t look too bad but last week he allowed 16 goals in just three games and has a 3.19 Goals Against Average and a .898 Save Percentage. Montreal missed the playoffs when Price was hot, if he continues this play, they may be looking at winning the draft lottery in the summer of 2020. Lastly we come to the Ottawa Senators who (let’s face it) nobody assumed would have a bounce back year. They are in a tough rebuilding phase right now that still needs time.
