VHS Students Host Seniors Group Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

On Tuesday, December 10th, seniors from the New Horizon’s Centre in Martensville were invited to Venture Heights Elementary School for a chance to take a sneak peek at the Grade 5-8 dress rehearsal of ‘Madagascar’. Prior to the performance, the seniors had a chance to enjoy some tea/coffee and cookies in the library while students from Grade 1 read them stories, or in some cases, the seniors had a chance to read a story to a student. The idea behind this came from a group of students called the Connections Team, which is a Student Reconciliation Team. This group hosted the seniors and provided a warm welcome to the school, as well as a steady offering of a fresh cup of coffee and tea. “These students are working on building community and showing that we appreciate our seniors,” VHS Home Ec. Teacher, Julie Kobussen, explained. This is the first time the school has invited the local seniors group to attend a performance at the school, and Kobussen noted that, “Through reconciliation, we have been talking about First Nations way of knowing different world views and how in many cultures, seniors are valued more. We wanted to invite them into the school in some way and thought that this would be a great first step. The students have been very excited about today, as have I and I am really proud of them for getting involved in community.”

Family Christmas Celebration at Valley Manor

Valley Manor hosted their Third Annual Family Christmas Celebration this past week. Over 400 students, staff, Mom’s and dad’s and grandparents and friends and neighbors got together to share some food, fun and festivities. The two hour event saw kids of all ages participate in everything from cookie decorating to face painting and family games. École Holy Mary Catholic School Choir Performs at TCU The École Holy Mary Catholic School choir performed at the Noon Festival of Carols at TCU Place on Tuesday, December 10th. The performance was featured on Shaw TV. SNOW AND ICE CONTROL PROGRAM – What You Need to Know

The program aims to facilitate the handling of emergencies by Police, Fire, and Ambulance services during the winter months, reduce the hazards of icy conditions to motorists and pedestrians, and minimize the economic losses to the community and industry resulting from unsatisfactory winter driving conditions. Information on general program procedures and the City’s Priority Map is available online at Martensville.ca, but here are a few ways you can help our crews keep our streets as clear and safe as possible: - Do not shovel, blow, or push snow from private property onto the street – this causes snow ridges on your driveway when our plow cleans your street. - Do not plow or pile snow on streets – this can block access to manholes and water valves and be a safety hazard. - Clear your driveways in advance of the city’s snow clearing operations - this helps our operators clear your street more efficiently. - Do not park your vehicle in an area where it could obstruct snow removal procedures this hinders our operations and could result in a snow ridge blocking your vehicle in place. - Do not leave large piles of snow at the corners of driveways – this snow can be caught by a raised snow-gate blade and topple over into your driveway or the street. -Prevent snow from piling up on the front of your driveway by moving it near your tree/ lawn areas behind your walkway. -Watch for posted areas for Snow Removal- In case of snow and snow removal, crews need to have roads cleared of all vehicles on posted streets. If you are going out of the City over the holidays, please have your vehicles off City streets. Vehicles left on the street per the traffic bylaw are ticketed and towed (to a non-posted area). -Stay Clear of Sanding Trucks- Crews apply a mixture of salt and sand on our streets and intersections to ensure safer driving conditions. If you are near or behind the sanding truck you are reminded to stay back 15m to allow the truck to disperse materials and to prevent materials from potentially hitting your vehicle. Our crews strive to delivery excellent services, however sometimes weather can be unpredictable, and snow and ice control activities may vary. Every reasonable effort will be made to remove snow and ice and create safe driving and walking conditions in a timely manner.

Information on Coyotes Around Urban Areas

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are several things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

• Do not approach, allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed. • Clean up fallen fruit • Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash If the coyote is acting unusual (approaching people, limping, staggering or acting confused) do not approach, contact City Hall, or the regional Conservation Office or the RCMP outside regular business hours. Please Watch for Signage around our Parks and pathways. We will continue to monitor activity going forward.

Martensville Hockey Team Organizing Fundrasier to Help Raise Money For Local Family Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

A Martensville hockey team is coming together to help a local family in need this holiday season. On January 2nd, families from the Martensville Initiation Sharks will be going door to door in Martensville for a bottle drive, with proceeds going to the Kortmeyer family. On September 24th, after working out at the gym, Bobby Kortmeyer began to experience chest pains, along with shortness of breath. Having some concerns, Bobby decided to visit his doctor, who could not see anything obviously wrong, but decided to do an x-ray of his chest. The results showed a large black mass above Bobby’s heart, and he was immediately rushed to the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. At this point, it was still unknown exactly what the problem was. After other testing, the Kortmeyer family was told devastating news. The black mass was a 6 inch tumor that had manifested itself around his aorta and other areas of the heart and lungs, making it impossible to operate on. After three biopsies, it was determined to be Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. At only 38 years old and the father of four young children, Bobby is currently unable to work as he receives treatment to work at shrinking the tumor. Each year, the Initiation Sharks hold a team fundraiser, which they decided this year will be used to help ease the financial burden that the family is currently facing. “For the bottle drive, we are hoping to hit all homes in Martensville, which depends on the weather. Our goal is to raise as much money as we can to help this family out,” Chantelle Higgins, a mother of one of the players, explained. “When we found out what was happening, Bobby was already undergoing treatment and as a team, we all knew that we wanted to do something to help. It is a really tough situation, and any kind of support can go a long way,” Higgins added. Those that wish to contribute can also visit any SARCAN location in Saskatchewan and use the code ‘Martensville Initiation Sharks’ at the Drop n Go station to contribute to this cause. Moe’s Ideas Need Further Reflection

One gets the burning desire in Western Canada, and particularly in rural Saskatchewan, to send Ottawa a loud message it can’t ignore. One can even understand the need to hit Ottawa and/or the federal Liberals where it hurts the most; but in our zeal to send a loud message to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, maybe it would be smart to slow down a bit and put some thought towards how we should approach matters. The last thing we need to do is something that actually hurts ourselves. That would seem the wise approach for Premier Scott Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government as it floats out the notions of this province having its own tax collection system and immigration policies. Perhaps they don’t sound like the worst ideas a government has ever come up with. This government’s stated goal of the Moe government to grow the province by 100,000 jobs and to 1.4 million people (roughly adding 225,538 people) by 2030. Meeting these lofty and noble goals will require policy nimbleness. After all, the lion’s share of the 170,000 additional people in Saskatchewan in the past 14 years have been due to new Canadians; the result of a solid immigration investment program put in place by the former NDP government and wisely kept and nurtured by the current Sask. Party government. For this reason, one gets why the provincial government would want more control on how it developments its immigration attraction policies and given that there is a precedent for what Moe is proposing, getting more control from Ottawa make that much more sense. "We have the template in Quebec that we can replicate here in Saskatchewan," Moe told reporters. "Essentially what the province of Quebec has." Quebec has managed to get special dispensation from the federal government so that it can put forward its own plans for immigration that are based on economic, family and humanitarian considerations. Perhaps on a similar vein, Moe also spoke of his idea in the "very preliminary" stage for the province to collect its own income tax; an idea similar to the one that United Conservative Party Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is now contemplating. Maybe it’s about here where we should reflect on whether these good ideas are in our best interests or something we just do to make a costly point. As a political strategy, neither collecting our own taxes nor having significantly more control over our own immigration hits Ottawa very hard. Or at least, it certainly wouldn’t have the same impact as Alberta suggesting of opting out of the Canada Pension Plan in favour of an Alberta program similar to the Quebec Pension Plan. (Although that notion has a whole series of other areas of potential pitfalls for this or any other government venturing into the dangers of running its own investment fund.) What it would most certainly do, however, is burden Saskatchewan taxpayers with having to fill out two tax forms like they do in Quebec. It would also burden taxpayers with setting up a whole other bureaucracy when governments are trying to find ways to cut costs and red tape. Similarly, monitoring more immigration and investment would also require additional provincial resources. And more monitoring would clearly be needed. Just take a look at some of the problems at Regina’s Global Transportation Hub with the Global Trade and Exhibition Centre, where Chinese investors are making serious allegations about what’s happened to their investment. It could get messy, with the government caught in the line of fire. It’s great to consider new ideas and talk about more autonomy, but we do need to take a serious look at whether these notions are really and truly in our best interests.

Some big trade news out of the NHL this week as Taylor Hall was traded to the Arizona Coyotes along with forward Blake Speers. In return the New Jersey Devils are getting three great young prospects, a conditional 2020 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2021 third-round draft pick. Rumors started spreading about Hall when he was healthy scratched on Friday’s game against Colorado but it still wasn’t clear on where he was going. It wasn’t until Monday afternoon that the trade to Arizona was confirmed. The Devils had high hopes this season with the additions of P.K. Subban, Wayne Simmonds, and first-overall pick Jack Hughes over the summer but things were not clicking as they are currently dead last in their division and ahead of only the Detroit Red Wings in the overall standings. It is a big boost for Hall as he is now on a team that is at the top of the Pacific Division and was already a playoff contender. The addition of a former Heart Trophy winner puts the Coyotes into the discussion of not just a playoff contender but a possible Stanley Cup favourite. Getting to the Canadian teams now it is the Winnipeg Jets that are the best in the country and have a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games. Winnipeg is 6th in the League overall and 3rd in the Central Division with a 20-11-2 record (42 points). Up next are the Edmonton Oilers who are struggling with only three wins in their last 10 games. Edmonton is lighting up the scoresheet on the power play (10 PP goals in their last eight games) but is struggling to score goals 5-on-5, or at least enough goals to win as the goaltending duo of Mikko Koskinen and Mike Smith have given up 37 in this last 10-game stretch. The Oilers are still a comfortable 11th overall in the league and 2nd in the Pacific Division with a record of 19-13-4 (42 points). Hot on their heels though are the Calgary Flames who just had their seven-game win streak snapped over the weekend against Carolina. Calgary rebounded after a six-game winless drought to get them back to an 18-13-4 record (40 points) that puts them 4th in the Pacific and 13th in the league. The Montreal Canadians ended their eight-game slide and have now won four of their last six. Montreal has a 15-12-6 record (36 points) which has them 19th overall and just out of a playoff spot at 4th in the Atlantic Division. Tied with the Canadians are the Toronto Maple Leafs who have won three of their last four games but just don’t look as dominant as they have in the past. Toronto is 5th in the Atlantic and 20th overall with a record of 16-14-4 (36 points). The Vancouver Canucks have the exact same record as the Leafs so they sit at 21st overall and 5th in the Pacific Division. Nothing much has changed with the Canucks this past week as they are 4-6 in their last ten games. Nothing has changed for the Ottawa Senators either, they are still bad, winning just three of their last 10 games and are just three spots up from the bottom of the league and are 7th in their division.

Local Curler Prepares For Provincials Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Amy Remeshylo is a member of the Martensville Curling Club and has been an avid curler for the past ten years. Beginning in the Junior League in Martensville, Remeshylo has become a familiar face on the ice and has been curling competitively for the past five years. With both sides of her family big fans of the sport, Remeshylo says it was natural for her to be a curler as well. “I was hesitant about trying curling when I was younger, but I’ve learned to love many of the aspects of it, including the strategy, emphasis on personal improvement, competition and strong connections to teammates, family and even opponents,” Remeshylo said. As with other sports, dedication is a huge part of self-improvement, which is why Remeshylo practices at least once a week with her team, and spends many hours on the ice between games every week in Saskatoon with her Junior team, a family team that plays once a week in Martensville and regular weekend bonspiels. Remeshylo and her team, which consists of Second Marlyse Steckler, Third Kelsey Sommerfeld, and Lead Rebecca Fitzsimmons, qualified for the U21 Provincials earlier this month, which will take place at the Sutherland Curling Club in Saskatoon from December 27-January 1. Although this is the first year that the four ladies have played on a team together, they are far from strangers to one another. Remeshylo has played alongside Steckler for the past three years and with Fitzsimmons in previous years. Although Remeshylo and Sommerfeld have not played as teammates previously, they have known each other as opponents for years. In order to qualify for provincials, two triple-knockout Qualification Bonspiels are held (Q-spiels), where a team must lose three games to be out of the competition. “There are three draws; A, B and C; and teams that lose a game drop down to the lower draw. The C has two qualifiers that come out of it, and the A and B both have one qualifier, for a total of four qualifying teams from each Q-spiel. We qualified out of the first Q-spiel, so we did not have to compete in the second,” Remeshylo explained. Congratulations to Team Remeshylo and good luck in Provincials!
