Martensville Messenger Partners with KidSport

The Martensville Messenger is proud to announce the debut of our new ‘Donate to KidSport’ option available at www.martensvillemessenger.ca. We are excited to partner up with this amazing program to help provide the chance for youth in Martensville to participate in organized sports; an opportunity they might not otherwise have.

KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that helps children aged 18 and under with confidential financial assistance in order for them to participate in local sporting options. Although Martensville is under the Warman & District KidSport chapter, all money that is raised in Martensville is utilized within the community to aid local children.

For years, KidSport has been an integral part of this community, providing thousands of dollars in funds each year to local youth and sporting organizations. In 2017, a total of 26 kids, ranging in age from 3 to 17 and a whopping $12,288.85 was donated within the community. Money is raised through donations and various events that are held each year in support of KidSport such as; Play and Skate with Santa, Variety Night and Winter Fun Fest. Without this, many children would miss the chance to create lasting friendships and learn skills that they can take with them throughout their lifetime.

The partnership between the Martensville Messenger and the local KidSport chapter was something that was discussed in 2017, as a way to provide individuals with the option to make a donation in a convenient way.

Donations can be made in honour of someone, for an occasion, or just because an individual feels like giving back to their community. They can be made in a range of increments through PayPal, with a credit card or a VISA debit card. Donators will have the option to remain anonymous, or they can enter their information in order to receive a tax receipt for donations over $20. At the end of each year, the Martensville Messenger will include a section in the newspaper dubbed “A Sporting Chance”, where we will feature donations that have been made throughout the year, excluding any anonymous ones.

Angie Reddekopp, Program Coordinator for the City of Martensville, sees the need for these funds firsthand as numerous requests for financial assistance are submitted regularly. “Kids being involved in team activities and sports really does benefit them overall, so we are always looking at new ways to raise funding for KidSport,” Reddekopp stated.

Saskatchewan Police Being Trained to Recognize Impairment From Drugs Think a Police Officer Can't Tell if You're Driving Stoned? Think Again!

“I drive better when I’m high!” “They’ll never catch me!” - “Pffft. That will never hold up in court!” Sound familiar?

There are plenty of misconceptions floating around regarding marijuana use and driving. The truth is that it’s illegal and will continue to be illegal in Saskatchewan to drive while impaired – whether by drugs or alcohol – even once marijuana use becomes legal in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018.

Think about it: people don’t smoke marijuana so they can feel the exact same. It is an impairing substance that alters your perception – and it increases your chances of being in a crash. “To put it simply, impaired is impaired,” said Penny McCune, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “Any substance that alters your thinking will impact your ability to drive safely. If you smoke marijuana, you should not get behind the wheel until you’re sure the effects have fully worn off.”

Smoking marijuana affects judgment, reaction time, motor coordination and ability to make decisions. It can also cause paranoia, drowsiness, distorted perception and a sense of disorientation – all of which could cause you to lose control at the wheel. Mixing drugs and alcohol increases impairment even more.

If you think police won’t be able to tell if you’re driving while high, think again. Weaving within a lane, following a vehicle too closely, making unsafe turns – these can all be indications that a driver is high. Marijuana can also be detected by odor and by the driver’s physical appearance – including dilated pupils, poor balance and co-ordination.

If the police suspect that a driver is impaired by a drug or alcohol or a combination of both, they can make a demand that the driver take a standardized field sobriety test at roadside. If the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that a driver is impaired by a drug, they can make a demand that the driver submit to an evaluation conducted by a Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE).

“Drug Recognition Evaluators undergo extensive training and use a rigorous, scientific 12-step procedure in performing the evaluation,” said Cpl. Brian Ferguson, Provincial DRE Training Coordinator. “The evaluation must show impairment, signs and symptoms consistent with one or more drug categories, and the evaluator's findings must be supported by the toxicology.”

More and more police in Saskatchewan are being trained to recognize signs of impairment from drugs.

There are currently 74 DRE-certified officers in the province, with 20 to 40 new officers trained each year. But will these tests hold up in court? Absolutely.

Drug recognition evaluations have been accepted by Canadian courts as legally binding evidence in impaired driving cases for many years.

So, don’t drive high. It’s not worth it and you’re going to get caught.

Impaired drivers in Saskatchewan face some of the toughest administrative sanctions in the country, with immediate licence suspensions and vehicle seizures at roadside. Upon conviction, further penalties imposed by the courts may include fines, jail time and long-term driving restrictions.

Follow these tips to keep you and yours safe: • Be a Good Wingman – don't let impaired friends drive.

• Don’t drive high – weed increases your chances of getting into a collision and when combined with alcohol, impairment increases significantly.

• Plan a safe ride home – impaired driving is 100% preventable.

• Remember – it is illegal to operate any kind of motor vehicle while impaired by any substance. Police are trained to check for and recognize drug impairment.

How to Prevent Foxtails in Furry Family Members

There are always numerous risks to watch for when it comes to our furry family the teeth, on the roof of the mouth, or near the tonsils. In most cases, the awns get caught in members, and this time of year, pet owners are reminded to watch out for foxtails. Young Entrepreneur Donates For Breast Cancer Research

During the summer months, it is not uncommon to see our local young budding entrepreneurs working hard to provide lemonade and treats to passersby to earn some extra income. By offering a lemonade stand, it helps to teach children the value of a dollar, to build work ethic, encourage socialization, among many other benefits.

Local residents may have noticed one such stand near Dallas Martens Park as youngsters Lydia (6) and Landon (3) have been out working hard to raise money. All money raised is not going into their pockets, but instead being used to raise money in support of breast cancer research. Originally, the lemonade stand was arranged as a fun activity for the children; however, Lydia then suggested that they donate the money to a good cause. This is not the first time such generosity was demonstrated as at the age of 4, Lydia donated 10’’ of hair to breast cancer. In October of this year, Lydia plans to once again donate hair. “When I asked what we should do with the money, she replied to give it to someone in need. I asked if she would like to use it for when we cut her hair again and she said yes,” their mother Naomi Bregenser stated. Lydia plans to donate her hair during the breast cancer marathon being held October 26th at the Centre Mall.

Although young, the children have seen firsthand the effects of cancer and have experienced loss of their own through family and friends. Breast cancer hits home for the children, as their own grandmother was diagnosed in 2013. Thankfully it was caught early, and she is now cancer free. “It sounds like an easy process, but it wasn’t and now every year when I hear the marathon on the radio and all the stories that come from it, I remember a time when it was our family in those situations, which is why we have chosen to try to give back and help out a little bit. Lydia knows it is for her Grandma when she was sick, but I’m not sure to what extent she realizes how much of a difference she makes. Who knows where we would be at today if we didn’t have the knowledge and research that has been put into this disease and these fundraisers are what makes all of that possible,” Naomi added.

The first lemonade stand was held on July 21st, with plans to hold another one in August. “Since the lemonade stand in July, Landon has been asking to do another,” Bregenser said. In 2016, when Lydia first donated her hair, a whopping total of $1960 was raised through lemonade stands, thanks to generous friends, family and co-workers, Bregenser explained and the hope is to be able to raise as much as possible once again.

“Hopefully it works out again this year, but even if it doesn’t, every little bit helps!”

2018 Clubroot Survey The Ministry of Agriculture’s Clubroot Survey will help the province better understand the distribution and severity of clubroot in Saskatchewan. Dickie Dees Hits The Streets of Martensville

A familiar sound to many will soon be heard throughout the streets of Martensville as Dickie Dees prepares for their arrival. Owner Joshua Turner is looking forward to providing Martensville residents with tasty ice cold treats in an old fashioned format. Already serving up the communities of Dundurn, Warman, Delisle and Saskatoon, the move to Martensville was delayed slightly due to amendments being required in the City’s Business Licensing Bylaw. Prior to Turner’s request, the bylaw did not include licensing options for self-propelled units such as a bicycle. These changes were approved during the July 17th Council meeting, and Turner wasted no time at all looking for riders that were interested in representing the famous franchise.

Initially, Turner plans to have one to two bikes on the streets of Martensville to begin introducing the community to the old way of hearing those Dickee Dee bike bells as they roll through neighborhoods. “It’s going to take a little bit to reintroduce people to getting used to us coming around their neighborhoods at 6 or 7 pm after supper and they are going to be able to listen for those bells and hear their Dickie Dee rider coming up the street,” Turner said.

The idea behind the business came as an accident for Turner, who runs JT’s Tasty Treats Beach Café at Blackstrap Provincial Park.

Coming upon a retro ice cream bike as a promotional item for the café, Turner decided to stock up with some ice cream and took the bike out for a ride in the evening after work. “I started doing it and I would go out and make two to three hundred dollars in a couple of hours. After that, I began to think, if I can do that with one bike, then what if I had ten or twenty,” explained Turner. From there, JT’s Tasty Treats took to the streets. The concept took off like wildfire as many people remembered the ice cream bicycles from years past and were excited to see their return.

It wasn’t long before representatives from Dickie Dee saw the popularity of JT’s Tasty Treats through various marketing projects and contacted Turner. “They also saw how much ice cream we were purchasing through their wholesaler and contacted us directly. We put through a deal to work to take over the Dickie Dee name. We wanted to refresh the familiar name and give it a bit of a face lift and breathe some fresh air into an old brand that had been shelved for a while,” said Turner. Not realizing the effect that having the Dickie Dee name

would have on people, Turner didn’t expect to see huge results. “I knew there would be some value in the name, but at the same time, I kind of thought that people just associated any bike with that name – like Kleenex, or Ski-Doo. Since we have been working with Dickie Dees and brought back that nostalgic name, it has been through the roof.” With ongoing requests from communities to bring bikes in, Turner and his team have a hard time keeping up with everywhere their presence is requested.

“Dickie Dee was such a familiar thing for so many people growing up and so many people remember it fondly. Now those people have kids and grandkids and this allows them to introduce them to that memory.

It makes us all feel like kids again and we are so excited to be able to continue those memories for our kids and grandkids.” Utilizing bicycles from the 70’s and 80’s, it is important to Turner to continue that nostalgia, although finding parts can sometimes prove difficult.

Ice cream lovers are also invited to contact JT’s Tasty Treats to request a Dickie Dee bike to attend any event they may be hosting with 10+ people such as birthday parties, slo-pitch tournaments, fundraisers and more. “We would be happy to show up at your event and bring some extra excitement to it!”

With service in Martensville planned to begin following the long weekend, make sure you keep your eyes and ears open for a Dickie Dee rider. With one rider already in place, Turner is still accepting resumes for a second rider in Martensville. Water Security Agency Urges Saskatchewan Residents to be Cautious of Doorstep “Water Testing” Kits

The Water Security Agency (WSA) wishes to draw public attention to the business practices of private companies leaving “water testing kits” on people’s doorsteps.

Recently, some residents across the province have been receiving these kits, which include a bottle and instructions for water testing.

The instructions for taking a water sample are incorrect and the bottle provided does not appear to be sterilized. Residents should be cautious if they are encouraged to purchase water purification kits at the doorstep.

Public confidence in Saskatchewan’s drinking water systems is a core priority for WSA. WSA partners with municipalities across Saskatchewan to ensure drinking water is safe, in accordance with national drinking water standards.

Rigorous and ongoing testing requirements are a condition of WSA’s permits of water systems.

Take Precautions Against West Nile Virus

Saskatchewan residents are reminded to protect themselves against mosquito bites, as the peak season for West Nile Virus (WNV) approaches. There is increased risk of West Nile Virus in late July and August when the mosquitoes that carry the virus (Culex tarsalis) are most active and present in higher numbers.

Currently, the risk is highest in southern Saskatchewan where positive pools of mosquitoes have been found for the past two weeks. Most people who become infected with West Nile Virus experience no symptoms or have mild illness (fever, headaches, body aches).

“A small number of people develop a more serious illness called West Nile Virus neuroinvasive disease,” the province’s Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab said. “If you develop serious symptoms like a persistent fever, confusion, neck stiffness or an unusually severe headache, seek medical attention immediately.”

Mosquitoes are most active on warm evenings and between dusk and dawn. Take precautions against getting bitten. Use mosquito repellent, cover up and reduce the time spent outside when mosquitoes are most likely to bite. Maintain door and window screens so they fit tightly and are free of holes. Reduce mosquito habitat around your home and yard (such as standing water, old tires and other items that can collect water, bushes, shrubs, lawn overgrowth and debris).

So far this season, there has been one positive West Nile Virus lab test. A positive lab test does not necessarily indicate a current WNV infection.

West Nile Virus was first identified in Saskatchewan in 2002. Significant outbreaks of WNV infection in humans occurred in 2003 and 2007. Between 2003 and 2017, there were 158 cases of WNV neuroinvasive disease; 17 resulted in death.

Let us be clear that it is a good thing that the RCMP is not laying criminal charges in the Global Transportation Hub (GTH) fiasco.

Certainly, it is a great thing for the Saskatchewan Party government, whose credibility would have taken a serious hit if it headed into the 2020 election under the cloud of criminal court cases. But consider for a moment how bad such a circumstance would have been for democracy, itself.

Such a scandal would have affected the political fortunes of the Sask. Party, as was the case for the Progressive Conservatives in the early 1990s after their own caucus communication fraud scandal that produced 16 criminal convictions of MLAs and staff.

Setting aside judgment whether the old PCs deserved this fate (they went into hiatus and most of their members converted to the newly formed Sask. Party), this scandal disrupted the political balance in the province for nearly two decades.

What was essentially a two-party system in Saskatchewan between the NDP left and the alternative became a one-party system as that alternative transitioned from the PCs to the Liberals to the Sask. Party after the 1997 merger.

Of course, it’s far less likely even GTH criminal charges would have killed the mighty Sask. Party in the same way.

Nevertheless, had the RCMP found reason for charges, there can be no doubt that it would have taken an even greater political toll on the Sask. Party than this mess already has.

After two and half years and some 7,500 man-hours of RCMP investigation, we can be now confident that there is no reason to suspect criminality. That has to be a good thing. But does that mean this whole sorry GTH affair is now over and we should never know what really happened? No. Not by a long shot. Maybe the “judicial” inquiry now being demanded by the NDP is not needed.

One would think such legal matters (with the exception of civil suits that may still possibly emerge out of the myriad of pending land acquisition transactions lawsuits) have been dispensed with.

But consider all the other things the RCMP has likely discovered during its two and a half years of investigation - noncriminal matters of questionable ethics, conflicts of interest and downright government incompetence - that the public deserves to know about but doesn’t yet know about.

Although the GTH anticipated $10 million in land sales in the 2017-18, it made no such sales that fiscal year and only $231,000 in land leases. Total GTH debt is now $40 million, including a $28-million loan from the Royal Bank of Canada. Debut interest is now $845,000 - $200,000 more in 2017-18 than the $635,000 in the previous fiscal year. And this supposed inland port actually only has 12 clients - many of which are government entities ordered to locate there.

Moreover, the GTH’s very existence has clearly impacted other costly decisions - namely, the routing of now $1.9-billion Regina by-pass that has become arguably an even bigger fiasco. Now, Justice and GTH Minister Don Morgan are talking about unloading the whole mess.

“In retrospect, it’s probably not a business the government should have been involved in,” Morgan said.

But why did it become such a mess? The public is owed this explanation.

In fairness to the opposition’s own politically driven call for a “judicial inquiry”, it repeatedly demanded politicians and bureaucrats come to legislative committees to explain what went wrong.

Government MLAs blocked this each and every time - sometimes using the under-investigation excuse. Well, there is no longer a police investigation to use as an excuse, should be required to explain their actions. And we should have an in depth Provincial Auditor forensic audit advancing her initial damning finding in her June 2016 report. This would seem to be the very minimum that is now required.

Week eight in the CFL marked the first career start for two young quarterbacks with very different stories that ended up with very different outcomes. The first QB to make his first CFL start was Toronto Argonauts pivot, McLeod Bethel-Thompson. No one really had any idea who this guy was except for a back-up quarterback who hadn’t seen much playing time.

As for the other QB making his first CFL start, he was drafted first overall in the NFL after winning the Heisman Trophy as most outstanding player in college football back in 2012. They called him Johnny Football thinking he would be the next greatest thing to hit the NFL but he tanked and is now trying his luck in the CFL.

Which QB had the better start to their CFL career? McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

The 30-year old had a rough start but fought back from a 24-point deficit to lead the Argos to a 42-41 win over the Ottawa RedBlacks. Bethel-Thompson threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns (three in the 4th quarter) including the game winner with just one second left in the game.

Johnny Manziel on the other hand would not fare as well. Manziel threw four interceptions including one on his very first pass attempt of the game. He would be pulled after the 3rd quarter after throwing for 104 yards and no touchdowns as the Alouettes got destroyed 50-11 by the Ti-Cats.

Other games in the CFL saw Zach Collaros return to the field for the Saskatchewan Roughriders only to fall short against the Edmonton Eskimos 26-19.

The Calgary Stampeders kept their winning ways going with a 27-18 victory over the BC Lions on Saturday. Bo Levi Mitchell completed 19 passes for a whopping 370 yards as the Stamps improved to 7-0 on the season.

Argos QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson ruined a perfect week for picks but I was still 3-1 on the week improving my record to 21-10 in 2018. My winners for week nine in the CFL are Edmonton, Hamilton, and Ottawa.

Former Sask 5 Giants Earn a Spot At Westerns Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

Former Sask 5 Giants Adlai Muench, Logan Campbell and Brody Braaten play on the AAA Midget Giants team out of Saskatoon.

They went 4 – 0 in the Provincials tournament that was held in Saskatoon July 27 29. They lost in the final to the Saskatoon Cubs coming in second and earned a spot at Westerns in North Shore, British Columbia.

Ninth Annual KCRA Rodeo Brings Hundreds From Around the Province

The ninth annual Martensville Sunridge RV KCRA Rodeo was held this past weekend at the OK Corral, north of Martensville. This ever popular event brought hundreds of participants and spectators from all across Saskatchewan.

Held August 4th and 5th, the weekend consisted of two – one day rodeos and a wide variety of events such as; bull riding, roping, barrels, steer wrestling and more.

With a Roping Jackpot held Friday and live music by Jett Run on Saturday, the event had something for everyone!

There are several events scheduled at the OK Corral throughout August and September including the SBRA Dual Approved Double Header taking place August 17th, followed by the annual TeleMiracle Gymkhana Dine & Dance on August 18th. This event will kick off the annual TeleMiracle Trail Ride, which will take place from August 19th to August 26th. On September 15th, the OK Corral Breast Cancer Gymkhana will be held, which is always a popular event.
