Information on Coyotes

Property Tax Information- Due July 31st, 2022

Coyotes have been spotted in areas around Martensville. There are several things you can do if you have an encounter with a coyote and discourage them from coming near more populated areas.

-Tax Notices were mailed out on April 29th. If anyone has not received their notice, they should contact City Hall. Ensure all contact information is up to date.

- Taxes are due July 31st, 2022 to avoid interest charges.

• Do not approach, allow coyote to escape by identifying and maintaining escape routes • Never feed the animals • Do not turn your back or run • Act assertive, yell and wave your arms (act big, bad and loud) • Keep pets away to avoid creating additional stress for the animal • Ensure household garbage is securely stored in garbage bins, store bird seed, compost and pet food so it cannot be accessed.

• Clean-up any fallen fruit or discarded food items or litter.

• Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also attract coyotes • Do not allow your pets to roam freely, and keep dogs on leash

Ways to Pay - Taxes can be paid by cash, cheque, or debit at City Hall.

Summer Water Conservation Tips

-Water your lawn deeply, but not more than once a week. During periods of extended rain, water even less frequently.

-Water new lawns every other day until the grass reaches 5 cm; then water less frequently.

Saskatchewan’s current public health orders have been lifted, effective February 28, 2022.

-Set a tuna can in each of your sprinkler zones and time how long it takes to fill it with water.

That’s how long you should run your sprinkler once a week if your lawn is dry.

-Don’t water your lawn during the hottest time of the day. Instead, water early in the morning or in the evening. Don’t water when it’s rainy or windy.

-Check the sprinkler position to make sure you don’t waste water by watering the street, sidewalks or driveway.

-Xeriscape Landscaping – Group plants according to their watering needs. Plant water-saving plants, trees and shrubs. Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. All of this can save 10-35 litres of water per minute.

-When mowing your lawn, only cut the top 1/3 of the grass and leave clippings behind. They will help the soil retain moisture and provide natural fertilizer.

-Wash your car at the car wash. Washing at home with a hose for ten minutes uses 300 litres of water and sends soap, oil and other chemicals to the river through storm drains. At a car wash, run-off is captured and disposed of properly.

-Use a broom when cleaning your driveway or walkway. Washing with a hose uses almost 200 litres of water.

Martensville Officially Opens $325,000 Pump Track Skateboarders, inline skaters, BMX bikers & scooter riders to use new recreation facility

On Thursday, August 4th, the City of Martensville invited residents from Martensville and the surrounding area to attend the official grand opening of the Martensville Pump Track, located in Kinsmen Park, adjacent to the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark.

For those that aren’t familiar with what a pump track is, it is a course that contains a circuit of rollers, banked turns and features that are ridden by “pumping” with your arms and legs to propel yourself rather than pedaling or pushing. The pump track offers a place for all types of wheels, including; bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, wheelchairs, and basically anything with wheels; and all skill types to utilize while also teaching balance and coordination.

With funding provided through the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP) in 2020, and working together with Progressive Bike Ramps, Canadian Ramp Company, Velosolutions, along with input from the community, the pump track was open to the public as of August 2021. Under the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP), the Government of Saskatchewan invested $325,000 toward Martensville’s pump track project. MEEP also provided $575,000 towards other Kinsmen Park infrastructure such as outdoor rink and pathway paving and adding lights to a baseball diamond at Mocon Fields.

The grand opening event took place from 11:00am - 3:00pm and offered a wide variety of fun options for those attending including a bouncy castle for the kids to enjoy, a DJ on site, as well as a food truck.

At 12:15pm, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place with Martensville-Warman MLA Terry Jenson in attendance, as well as Honourable Randy Weekes, MLA (Biggar-Sask Valley).

“We are excited to officially open and welcome users, guests, and the public to our new pump track. It has already been a popular amenity and a growing sport that adds to the strong and diverse recreational base we have here in Martensville. This is one more reason for residents and visitors to visit Kinsmen Park,” said Martensville Mayor Kent Muench in a press release from the City of Martensville.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support these Martensville recreation projects by investing a total of $900,000 in provincial funding through MEEP. This included the new track for skateboarders, inline skaters, BMX bikers and scooter riders, along with other Kinsmen Park infrastructure, which makes Martensville an even more attractive community for families to live, work, raise a family and start a business in this new decade – and beyond,” said Martensville-Warman MLA Terry Jenson, on behalf of Saskatchewan’s Government Relations Minister Don McMorris.

Recently, the pump track was closed to the public as landscaping was taking place, which included the installation of rubberized surfacing around the perimeter of the asphalt track that will transition into grass. Prior to that, lights were installed surrounding the pump track.

Police Team Up With Partner Agencies in Search For Missing Woman and Son

On Monday, July 25, 2022, Saskatoon Police put out a notice requesting public assistance in locating a missing 48-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son; Dawn Walker and Vincent Jansen.

Walker was last seen at a business on the 300 block of Owen Manor in Saskatoon on July 22 and the two were reported missing on July 24th. On July 25, at approximately 9:00am, Walker’s red Ford F150, along with some personal belongings were found at Chief Whitecap Park, located south of Saskatoon.

Dawn Walker is described as 5’5” tall, medium build, blond hair, brown eyes. Vincent Jansen is described as 4’2” tall, slim build, brown hair and brown eyes.

Police and volunteers have searched the area in and around Chief Whitecap Park, as well as the South Saskatchewan River adjacent to the park, utilizing the Public Safety Unit and the Air Support Unit, along with partner agencies. Crews have already searched the river from the park downstream to the weir and have plans to begin searching further downstream. Despite this area being searched, police noted during a Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) news conference on Tuesday, August 2nd that although crews have searched the area, it does not mean 100 per cent that Dawn and Vincent are not there, commenting on how the river changes constantly.

During the same news conference, Okanese First Nation Chief Richard Stonechild requested that the public check their properties for anything out of the ordinary.

Police have also put out a notice requesting anyone with video/dash-cam footage that might assist in the investigation, specifically requesting any relevant surveillance of the Chief Whitecap Park between 6:30pm Friday, July 22nd and 9:00am on Saturday, July 23rd. Anyone with possible video surveillance is asked to email police.info@ police.saskatoon.sk.ca and anyone with knowledge regarding the whereabouts of Dawn Walker or her son Vincent Jansen is asked to contact the Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police are also looking through Walker’s cellphone records and banking history in hopes of finding information that will help in the investigation.

Andrew Jansen, the father of Vincent has launched a website with photos and information about his son, which includes a link to a GoFundMe page to help raise money to be used towards a $10,000 reward for information leading to finding Vinnie and his safe return home (reward may possibly increase depending on amount of funds raised), as well as to be used to help fund the search efforts in locating Vinnie. If Vinnie is found, the remaining balance will go towards support efforts in finding other missing children. As of Wednesday evening, the total sat at approximately $44,000 of the $100,000 goal. MCRP Gearing Up For Annual 3 on 3 Hockey Tournament Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) is preparing to once again host one of their biggest events of the year. The 3 on 3 Hockey Tournament will be taking place from August 28 to September 18 at the Martensville Sports Centre.

Currently, the event is full, with only one goalie spot needed for the U11 division and a Open Spots goalie needed for the 15+ Available: division; however, players 1 -U11 Goalie are still able to register to 1 - 15+ Goalie the wait list, as well as a spare player list. A total of 320 spots are available for this popular event each year, with the majority filling up quickly.

The cost to participate is $195 per players, with a guaranteed seven games played and all participants will be receiving a souvenir T-shirt sponsored by BN Metals.

This event is one of the fundraisers organized by the MCRP to help raise money to go towards the future multipurpose recreation facility that will be constructed in Trilogy Ranch. It will be located on the west side of Highway 12, and will consist of a 680-acre residential and commercial development.

Skate Martensville’s skating season has started with registration opening on Tuesday, August 2nd.

Martensville Host to Numerous Curling Heavy Hitters This September Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Something big is coming to Martensville this September! From September 1-5, some of the biggest names in curling will be participating in the 2022 Men’s & Women’s International, which will be taking place at the Martensville Curling Rink.

Curling fans can expect to see familiar faces such as; Jennifer Jones, Silvana Tirinzoni; the reigning 3x world champ from Switzerland; Mike McEwen, John Epping, and many more International and Canadian teams including local favorites Colton Flasch and Steve Laycock.

The event is being organized by Curling Stadium Saskatchewan, which consists of James Gordon of Prairie Ice and the Head Ice Tech for the Martensville Curling Club and Gerry Geurts of CurlingZone.com.

“We are aiming for a field of up to 40 teams; with 20 men’s and 20 women’s teams. We are currently about half full with a lot of well-known teams in the lineup,” Gordon said.

All games will be available via live-stream for free on multiple platforms, with YouTube being the primary platform. Gordon explained that one game from every draw will also be available via CBC Gem, the streaming platform for CBC. “Based on our stats from last season, we are expecting over 500,000 people to watch this event over the weekend, with a goal of hitting one million total views,” Gordon added.

The option for streaming games live is made possible through contributions from Sasktel, who is the title sponsor at both Sasktel Curling Stadium Martensville and Sasktel Curling Stadium Swift Current.

“Without their support we wouldn’t have the streaming available that lets us put on big events like this. Their partnership played a major role in making the streaming possible in both Martensville and Swift Current beginning in the 2021/22 curling season.”

Both Curling Stadiums feature four to six permanent cameras on each sheet of ice, with streaming available for everything from major events, down to leagues and corporate events. “In only our second year of business, we are already in nine facilities worldwide; four in Canada, four in the USA and one in Scotland, with more to come.”

Full event packages are now on sale for $40 and can be ordered by emailing CurlingStadiumSask@gmail.com. VIP table packages, which include six full event passes, along with prime seating upstairs are available for $500 and day passes will be available for $10 once the draw has been released. Another option will be a $5 admission to attend the final draw of each day.

Additionally, this September, there will be a CurlSask U20 Junior event – Sask Cup #1, which takes place September 9-11, a Sask Curling Tour Mixed Doubles event from September 16-18, and CurlSask U18 from September 23-25. All of these events will be live-streamed as well.

According to Gordon, they are looking for sponsors to come on board to help support these major events, as it costs a considerable amount of money in prize purses to bring big names to these events. “Having sponsors in place helps make it possible to grow the events and help put Martensville on the map as being a major event destination for curlers and fans.”

Government Increases Seniors Income Plan Benefits

Federal Fertilizer Restrictions Out of Touch

There is no doubt that there have been times when provincial governments have used Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Federal Liberal government as a political punching bag. It's a formula that’s always worked well in places like Saskatchewan that has historically tended to send more opposition Members of Parliament to Ottawa than government MPs. There’s always been a market for peddling notions of Western alienation, which is likely a reason why Premier Scott Moe is now holding his sometimes-by-invitation “economic sovereignty” meetings this summer.

Certainly, there have been times when Moe has pushed the Western alienation/separation button a wee bit too hard - partly to ward off political considerations to his right, but also partly because it always works, but there’s also been times when Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government seem completely justified in their frustrations with Ottawa.

The recent federal government announcement on limiting fertilizer use as the latest attempt to fight global warming is one of those times.

The federal Liberal government plan is to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizers as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent. Suffice to say, this is not going over well.

“We’re really concerned with this arbitrary goal,” said Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit, echoing concerns from his counterparts across the country at a recent meeting in Saskatoon.

Other agriculture ministers noted the lack of flexibility and consultation with producing provinces. As one alternative, they made the infinitely reasonable request that any federal requirements for emissions reductions from fertilizer be weighed by how much food is produced in relation to the fertilizer used.

“The world is looking for Canada to increase production and be a solution to global food shortages,” said Alberta Agriculture Minister Nate Horner. “The Federal government needs to display that they understand this.” The war in Ukraine threatens food shortages in Africa, meaning it may be to us in Canada to help ward off famine on that continent.

This is an immediate crisis on top of an ever-increasing food demand in a world where the population grows. At the very least, we will see less world sunflower production from Ukraine, meaning an increasing world demand for our canola.

Similarly, we are also seeing world shortages for pulses like chickpeas and especially lentils. If this is the alternative protein needed to slow down cattle production scientists cite as a major source of GHG emissions, shouldn’t we be thinking about ways Canada could serve the world?

For that matter, has Ottawa seriously examined how added crop production through fertilizer absorbs more carbon and reduces GHGs? This is something Western farmers seem to get more than federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, who somehow thinks farmers support her government’s targets.

“I’m meeting with many farmers in the field. I know how much they care for the environment and how much they invest in new practices and new technologies to reduce their emissions as much as possible,” Bibeau said. “The idea is to produce the most sustainable food in the world.”

Which farm groups is she meeting with? Is she hearing from the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan and Western Canadian Wheat Growers who have made it abundantly clear they believe reduced crop output hurts both farm families and Canadian families buying groceries?

And we are not talking about the prices we are paying for tropical fruits or avocados shipped north in the winter at considerable environmental costs. We are talking about dietary staples like bread, pasta, cooking oil and chickpeas.

With the carbon tax to hit $170 per tonne by 2030, it’s already unbearable for farmers. Add this new penalty for fertilizers and it spells disaster for not only farmers here but also for the rest of the world. Evidently, the federal Liberal government doesn’t get this either.

For the second year in a row, the maximum monthly benefit provided through the Seniors Income Plan (SIP) will increase by $30 per month.

"Our government is following through on our commitment to make life more affordable for Saskatchewan seniors," Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky said. "This investment in the Seniors Income Plan will help seniors across the province participate in their communities while living more comfortably and securely."

The maximum SIP benefit will increase from $300 per month to $330 per month for singles and from $265 per month to $295 per month for each pensioner in a married, two-pensioner household, for a total of $590 per month.

SIP provides financial assistance to seniors who receive little or no income, other than the federal Old Age Security pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement. SIP is a monthly benefit paid to seniors, who receive different levels of support depending on the amount of their pension, taxable income or living arrangement. The benefit is higher for seniors with lower incomes.

The Government of Saskatchewan committed more than $34 million this year to SIP, which supports approximately 14,500 seniors across the province. SIP benefits will increase by a maximum of $30 per month again in 2023-24. This marks the seventh increase government has made to SIP since 2008. Maximum monthly SIP benefits will increase by $30 per month again in 2023-24, for a total maximum monthly benefit of $360.

But their staying power lasts a lot longer than your commute. Rest assured, your genius TikTok dance or photos of your delicious lunch can wait until you arrive at your destination.

Scrolling through and posting to your social media channels is not a priority when you’re driving. In fact, it’s not even an option.

Offenders face a $580 ticket and four demerits for either: • holding, using, manipulating or viewing a handheld cellphone, or • driving without due care and attention.

Repeat offences within one year result in significantly higher ticket costs ($1,400 for a second ticket; $2,100 for a third), and sevenday vehicle impoundments. No Instagram reel could possibly be worth that.

The penalties are stiff because distracted driving is an all-too-common safety hazard on our roads and highways.

Over the past five years (2017-2021), an average of 780 people were injured each year in collisions caused by driver distraction and inattention on Saskatchewan roads. That’s one out of every five auto vehicle injuries.

Distracted driving also results in an average of 21.6 fatalities per year.

Eliminate distractions before you start driving. Respond to texts, check your notifications, make sure your passengers (young children, pets) are safely secured so you can solely focus on driving once you’re in motion.

“A distracted driver is a threat to everyone on the road,” said Barbara Cross, Chief Operating Officer of SGI Auto Fund. “Traffic lights, pedestrians, speed limits and other drivers are just a few of the factors drivers need to be aware of when driving. When your attention is elsewhere, these can be missed.”

Distracted driving is the focus of August’s Traffic Safety Spotlight. Police across Saskatchewan will be looking for drivers using their cellphones or distracted in other ways.

Youth Take Part in Popular Community Event at Martensville Baptist Church Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Youth with Martensville Baptist Church hit the streets of Martensville on Wednesday, August 3rd to take part in one of the group favorites – ‘Bigger or Better’, a game in which the youth is split into groups and challenged with bringing back the best item by going house to house and trading items to see who can end up with the best trade at the end of the night.

This has been taking place for the past seven years, with one year hiatus due to the COVID restrictions.

Youth from grades 6 to 12 are split into groups and each provided with a paper clip. Going door-to-door, they ask residents to trade up from the paper clip.

“Once the resident agrees, they will come up with something a bit bigger or better than the paper clip which the group starts with. After about an hour of walking around and trading up, groups return to the church with their final item(s),” organizer Tim Rauser explained.

After returning to the church, groups are then judged on their items in three categories, which include biggest item, most unique and the best item to be displayed in the youth room.

“In past years, we have seen youth come back with a large plasma tv, antique Singer sewing machine, full set of cordless Dewalt tools, kitchen chairs and an old gaming console,” Rauser said.

The groups began at the Martensville Baptist Church and then spread out from 3rd Street and Main Street and go as far as the time limit allowed. In past years, groups have driven as far as Reimer Road; however, Rauser noted that most of the activity takes place within walking distance of the church.

A total of 65 youth participated in this event, with a couch as the biggest prize brought back, a car buffing kit as the most unique and an air hockey table as the best item that will be used in the church youth room.

In addition to this event, one of the biggest summer events will be taking place this month with Kids Week happening the week of August 22nd during the evenings. This event has not taken place for the past two years due to the pandemic, so everyone is looking forward to it being back in place. Kids Week is for kids in Kindergarten to Grade 5 and will take place from 6:30pm-8:30pm. It includes games, songs, Bible stories, activities, special guests, snacks and prizes.

Mellowdy Studios, owned and operated by brothers Brad and Danny Downing, have been teaching in Martensville for 16 years.

“We teach all ages and skill levels for guitar, drums, voice, bass, ukulele, and theory/songwriting.

Lessons are taught out of our home studios located in Martensville,” said Brad Downing.

Half hour weekly lessons run from the start of September to the end of June and cost $87/month.

Times are available Monday-Friday between 3:309:30pm and are booked on a first come first serve basis.

“We offer a year end recital for all students as well as recording projects with our more advanced students. We’ve had several students go on to start bands, tour, release albums and play local shows. It’s very rewarding seeing the progress each student makes every year.”
