Martensville Continues to Appeal to New Businesses Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville continues to be an appealing location for new businesses. With new developments underway and a five year tax incentive program in place, many businesses looking to settle their roots find that the community of approximately 10,000 is the perfect place to establish their endeavor.

One of the newest businesses to do this is The Scrub Auto & Pet Spa. This will be the first business located within Martensville’s newest industrial development, located south of Main Street off of 10th Avenue South.

This development will offer opportunity to a range of businesses, and according to The Scrub owner/operator Randy Penner, was the perfect location for their business.

Having moved to Warman with his family approximately one year ago, Penner immediately fell in love with the communities of Warman and Martensville and was proud to call the area his home. Seeing that there was plenty of business opportunity within the two communities, Penner and an associate wanted to bring something to the area that they felt residents would appreciate. “We thought that this was something that the area needs. The Scrub Auto & Pet Spa will be designed to accommodate everyone. With an eight bay wand wash, a two bay pet wash, an automatic touchless bay and an outdoor RV bay, no matter what kind of vehicle or pet you have, you can be sure it will soon be sparkling clean. “I am really picky when it comes to car washes and there is nothing worse than going into a car wash and finding that it hasn’t been cleaned up after the last person. Having to navigate through mud and walk through dirt defeats the purpose of cleaning your vehicle. We are going to be very thorough when it comes to making sure it is clean and very user friendly,” Penner added. The RV wash was added due to it being the first of its kind for the area. “When you drive around, you see that many people have campers parked in their yards and end up having to wash them in their driveways. We wanted to give them a nice, clean area to take them and ensure that they are cleaned properly.” Along with RV’s, the outdoor bay will also be available for large trucks & semi’s to utilize as well.

Last week, digging for the underground water holding tank began, which was a requirement for the car wash due to excess water use. In order to avoid overwhelming the sewer system during peak hours, water will be held within the tank during the day, and released overnight.

Being the first to develop in the area, Penner stated that they are working hard to set the standard for other businesses. “We are very excited to be the first ones in the area and are really looking forward to seeing the finished product. “We viewed many completed carwash projects from general contractors and found Janzen Steel Buildings to have a superior finish inside and out.

Their office staff and project management has been first class which made it easy to shake hands and move forward.” After visiting a car wash convention in Toronto, Penner and his associate knew that they wanted to bring a top quality option to local residents. The automatic car wash at The Scrub will provide a highly targeted washing system that not only cleans better, but does it in less time at only 3.5 minutes, with other car washes taking approximately 8-10 minutes. The advanced technology will allow the wash to adjust to each individual vehicle. “We did a lot of research for automated touchless wash so we could bring the most advanced equipment into our facility. Due to wanting the best for us and our customers, the equipment won’t be available for install until summer 2019.”

Planning to have the wand wash and pet wash options available late this year, Penner is confident that residents are going to love the new addition to the community. “We are happy to be able to provide something to the communities that have been so good to us. Martensville has been amazing to work with and the people and the sense of community are amazing. The MCRP would like to thank all of the community members who volunteered, as well as Brainsport and New Balance for providing door prizes for the event.

The MCRP also hosts the 3on3 hockey tournament that began on August 26 and runs to September 15. They had 32 teams registered this year with over 350 participants from Novice to Midget. They have decided to change up their annual casino night this year. They are hosting an 80’s retro cabaret on November 3rd at the Northridge Center. The MCRP has raised over $150,000.00 to date.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

It was a wild few weeks in the CFL as the league no longer has an undefeated team and the Montreal Alouettes pulled out a win with yet another quarterback.

Week 10 saw the RedBlacks stomp the Blue Bombers 44-21, the Toronto Argonauts narrowly beat the Lions 24-23, Montreal lost another one 40-24 to the Eskimos, and the Calgary Stampeders took their first loss of the season at the hands of the Saskatchewan Roughriders 40-27.

The Saskatchewan offence could have made it a lot worse but they were only able to cap off one drive with a TD and ended up with 6 field goals. The Riders got their TD’s from an interception return and a fumble recovery. The Stamps Bo Levi Mitchel threw for 275 yards and 4 TD’s in his first loss of the season. Mitchel came back in week 11 looking to rebound from the loss and he did exactly that, throwing for a career high 452 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Stamps got back to their winning ways with a 39-26 win against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats upset the Eskimos 25-24 with a last second field goal to improve to 4-5 on the season.

The Montreal Alouettes got just their second win of the season as they beat the Toronto Argonauts 25-22. The Als were without QB Johnny Manziel for a second straight week as he is out with a concussion. Rookie quarterback Antonio Pipkin threw for 303 starts in his first career win.

The final game of the week had Saskatchewan win their second in a row with a 24-21 win over the BC Lions. The win puts the Riders just one win away from a tie for 2nd in the CFL’s West Division. After a 3-1 record in week 10 and a 2-2 record in week 11 my picks are 27-15 in the 2018 season. My picks for week 12 (Labour Day Classics!!) are Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Hamilton.

Slo-Pitch League Hosts Year-End Tournament

Martensville Slo-Pitch held their league year end tournament August 17-19. Throughout the summer months, varying teams from different divisions play each night from Sunday to Thursday. Teams came together one last time to have some fun and battle it out to see who would come out on top. In the end, the Jays took home the Division A Championship, with the Mound Pounders taking the Division B title, Da Beers winning Division C and Sports getting the Division D win.

Martensville Slo-Pitch organizers would like to thank all of the teams and volunteers that make this league possible and also to the executive for their time and hard work.

The Maddog tackle and fall teams are underway for this season. The Maddogs have hit the field in preparation for their Jamboree that is approaching. Training camp officially started on August 20 for the Peewee and Bantam tackle teams. The Peewee head coach is Travis Urschel while Grant Currie is at the helm for the Bantam team. Both teams are preparing for their first games at the Football Jamborees on August 30 and September 5. The teams will be playing most of their games at the new SMF Field. The Jamboree is a series of mini games that gives each team an opportunity to play all the teams they will be facing in the upcoming season. Their season starts the week of September 9 with their first home game on September 22 which is the annual Homecoming.

The flag teams also held their registration. Dave Dumont the flag representative is busy organizing teams and finding coaches. Dumont is happy with the numbers with over 60 kids registering for the 2018 season. The Bantam team ran a mini jamboree for the flag players on August 20, where the older players put the younger kids through some drills. It’s great to see the older players become involved with teaching the younger ones. There was a family BBQ for all Maddog players and parents following the practices.

Mark your calendars for the Maddog Homecoming on September 22 when the Roughriders and some Roughrider cheerleaders will visit Martensville Football field. This year Rock 102 will also be coming. There will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids and appearances from the Hilltops, Huskies and some Blades.

Games start at 1:00 when the Peewees hit the field. The Flag kids will play at 2:30 with the Bantams following at 3:30. Come out and enjoy the fun day and cheer on your Maddogs.

Curves Martensville is doing their part to bring awareness to Diabetes in Canada.

Throughout the month of August Curves has been collecting gently used items that will be donated to the Curves Clothesline for Diabetes drive at the end of the month. Anyone that donates a 10lb bag of items, or makes a $30 donation they can enroll for free, and receive a ballot in a draw to win a beautiful floral arrangement from SAS Home and Floral Boutique.

During the month of August, Curves has also been sharing some facts about the disease that according to the Canadian Diabetes Association, is the contributing factor in approximately 41,500 Canadians each year. By joining Curves, you can help reverse the effects of Type 2 Diabetes by making aggressive lifestyle changes that include strength training and aerobic activity.

As of August 27th, Curves has collected 1537 pounds for the Diabetes Clothesline Drive. That number continues to grow each day as they work to beat last years total of 2400 pounds.

Federal Government Jeopardizing Economic Development

Summer is always a great time to get back to our communities, reach out to constituents and gather feedback on how we can work together to build a better province.

Whether it is fighting the carbon tax or fixing Canada’s flawed equalization program, your Saskatchewan Party government will always stand with the people of this great province.

Right now we need to bring attention to a troublesome piece of legislation for our natural resource sector.

The federal government’s Bill C-69 has pulled the plug on Energy East; a $15 billion pipeline project that would create jobs and unlock more economic growth in Canada.

By considering changes like upstream and downstream emissions for pipeline projects, Bill C-69 will cause delays, add more costs, and undermine the future investment we need in Canada’s energy sector.

Former TransCanada CEO Hal Kvisle refers to Bill C-69 as “an absolutely devastating piece of legislation” and went on to say “I don’t believe any competent pipeline company would submit an application if Bill C-69 comes into force.” Our government’s focus is improving competitiveness, by opposing a carbon tax and building increased pipeline capacity for our oil exports. We will not support a bill that delivers another body blow to our energy industry. $110 Million Investment in Parks

With harvest now in full swing and many students and families preparing for back to school, this is getting to be a busy time in households across Saskatchewan. I sincerely hope you have had an opportunity to enjoy some recreation and relaxation this summer.

Saskatchewan’s provincial parks continue to be an important destination for many of us, attracting visitors and bringing economic benefits to the entire province. Saskatchewan is investing more than $11 million for various parks improvements this year, increasing our total investment to nearly $110 million since 2008. $8.4 Billion Investment in Highways

Highways have been another focus of our government with a variety of safety improvement and enhancement projects currently underway. Our province has invested more than $8.4 billion in highways and infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 13,000 kilometres of highways. $770 Million Investment in Housing

Shovels have also been hitting the ground on important housing projects this summer as we continue to support those in greatest housing need. Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $770 million to develop or repair almost 16,000 housing units across our province.

73% Increase in Child Care Spaces

Our government recently allocated the remaining licensed child care centre spaces as part of the CanadaSaskatchewan Early Learning and Child Care Agreement. Signed earlier this year, the agreement includes the development of 1,015 licensed child care centre spaces and 1,500 licensed group and family child care home spaces.

Nearly 7,000 new spaces have been allocated across the province since 2007 –a 73% increase– for a total of more than 17,000 licensed child care spaces in Saskatchewan. Even at a time of fiscal restraint, our government continues to support the priorities of Saskatchewan people through major investments in health care, education, social services, and the protection of people and property.

Today our plan to reduce the province’s reliance on resource revenue, control and carefully manage spending, and achieve a balanced budget by 2019-20 is on track. Together we will keep Saskatchewan growing strong now and into the future.

Ag, Highways Minister Guaranteed Success

David Marit will be a successful Saskatchewan Party government agriculture minister. This assessment has very little to do with the quality of this individual appointed agriculture minister earlier this month or his track record as a politician as a former Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) president or as Wood River MLA and highways minister.

Admittedly, Marit seems to be a quality individual and was a capable highways minister - notwithstanding, the outstanding mess he inherited as a result of the $1.9-billion Regina bypass, but why he will be a good agriculture minister has little to do with that.

Nor will it have much to do with how he contrasts to his predecessors in the portfolio - Bob Bjornerud (the Sask.

Party’s first agriculture minister) and Lyle Stewart (who had to leave the portfolio because of his on-going battle with cancer).

Both were outstanding ministers and even better people. Marit might be their equal, but his success in the portfolio will have little to do with his personal character or ability.

Similarly, Estevan MLA Lori Carr is likely to be a rather successful minister of highways. Again, this has next to nothing to do with any contrast she offers compared with Marit, her predecessor. Nor does it really have anything to do with the obligatory hype you hear lavished on a new cabinet appointee.

“She’s very competent and deserving of this honour to serve in Executive Council, on behalf of not just the people of Estevan but on behalf of the people of the province and we look forward to serving with her,” Premier Scott Moe told reporters after promoting the Estevan MLA from the backbench.

This might be the case, but individual talents have little to do with why modern-day cabinet ministers do well.

Simply put, Carr and Marit will most likely be successful because it’s very important to the Sask. Party that certain portfolios like agriculture and highways be seen as successful.

Today’s lesson is about how governing parties need to appeal to their base and how they assign certain ministers in certain portfolios to do just that. Individual cabinet talent?

Yes, it’s still important, but the simple reality is that the need for regional representation and gender balance in the relatively small pool of caucus MLAs from which a premier must choose ministers is as important.

With all due respect to Carr, who said she was “really excited” and the Moe’s selection “came as a bit of surprise”, her appointment likely had little to do with any outstanding skill set she may have. Asked about her priorities, she responded that “nothing specifically as a priority, other than safety is so important.”

This is not to belittle her appointment, but to reflect the reality that cabinet ministers are not expected to have a grand vision or intense knowledge of the multi-hundredmillion-dollar business they are tasked to head. Rather, they are expected to be good, solid people that make good choices that don’t embarrass the government. And they are expected to follow the lead of government.

What that often means is justifying under-spending in certain portfolios and overseeing healthy budgets in other areas.

It just so happens that agriculture and highways are critical to the Sask. Party’s rural base. As such, regardless of who has been minister, ministers running these portfolios under the Sask. Party government have received substantial program and funding support.

There will be bumps along the way. Carr will hear the obligatory complaints about the roads. Marit will hear detailed, learned complaints about how the ag portfolio is run, but it is in the Sask. Party government’s political interests to ensure these two are very successful in their respective portfolios. On-going funding in ag and highways should ensure the two new ministers do rather well.

Regional Race Gearing Up For Second Year Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The second annual SREDA Regional Race will be taking place on Saturday, September 15th. The purpose of this event is to help bring residents of Saskatoon, Martensville and Warman together and to highlight the two communities that are so close to Saskatoon.

Planned in partnership between the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA), the cities of Martensville and Warman and the Rural Municipality of Corman Park, the event will begin in Martensville with a warm up, and end in Warman with a brunch. For only $25, registration includes brunch, a race t-shirt, a swag bag and a shuttle back to Martensville.

“This isn’t a fundraiser or a money making project, it’s just an opportunity for people to get out for the day and get the communities together,” Alex Fallon, the presidents and Chief Executive Officer at SREDA, explained.

Due to the success of last year’s race, organizers were excited to be able to provide this event once again.

“Last year we had a goal of fifty participants and we ended up having approximately 100 people come out, and we are expecting even more this year. The Regional Race is more than a run, it is really more of a community event to get people out from Saskatoon and give them a chance to see Warman and Martensville and to have people from Martensville and Warman come out and get to know each other and recognize how close we are all to each other,” Fallon said.

Those participating are invited to walk or run a 10 kilometre course between the two communities, beginning in Martensville’s Kinsmen Park, and ending in Warman’s Prairie Oasis Park. With kid’s activities, a community BBQ, health and wellness education, comedic entertainment and more, this event offers something for all ages. Volunteers

from both communities will help with set up, directing participants along the route and run the community BBQ.

The event will begin at 8:30 am with the warm up and the race will commence at 9:30 am, where participants can run, walk or jog a planned 10K course between Martensville and Warman, ending with a community BBQ that is open to everyone. “Even if you aren’t participating in the event, we invite you to come out and encourage and cheer on the participants and celebrate the cities and towns in the Saskatoon region,” Fallon added.

For those interested in participating, you can register for $2.00 at www.picatic.com/regionalrun. “This is definitely something that we hope to grow and we hope it is going to be even bigger this year than last year. You really do get a different perspective when you are jogging slowly through the communities and taking it all in,” Fallon said.

It is not a timed event, so families are invited to bring everyone out to take part in the community event.
