Be Wary of Foxtails When it Comes to Your Furry Companions Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

This time of year, pet owners are reminded to watch out for foxtails. These plants have a barbed seed head that can be extremely dangerous for animals and can work their way through the body causing extreme damage, and in some cases they can cause death if not treated quickly.

If a dog or cat is exposed to these weeds, the barbed head can burrow into the body, and move to other areas of their system, including major organs such as the brain, lungs and heart. Once burrowed, these seeds continue to move forward and due to the barb-like spines, cannot be removed easily.

Foxtails can attach anywhere on the skin, and are often removed from around the ears and between the toes; however, they can be found in many other areas including, eyes, mouth, nose and paws. Often, once a foxtail has embedded, pets will frequently lick and chew the area that is irritated. If they get embedded in the ear, owners can watch for head shaking, scratching and crying and if a foxtail has found its way into a pet’s eye, you will likely see blinking, squinting, redness and/or tearing. There is risk of permanent blindness or the loss of the eye so a visit to the vet is required to avoid this emergent situation.

If a pet eats a foxtail; whether by accident or on purpose, often their throat will become irritated and once that happens, most pets will begin to frantically eat grass or objects they would not normally eat. This can make the problem worse, as more grass awns or more irritating material scratches or attaches to the already irritated mouth or throat. Pets may also be hacking, coughing, sneezing or vomiting. There are times when an owner may see the awns of foxtail caught between the teeth, on the roof of the mouth, or near the tonsils. In most cases, the awns get caught in the tonsils, or the crypts that the tonsils sit in. In this case, sedation is required to see them and to remove them. If they are not removed, they can cause pain, abscess and migrate to deeper tissues that are harder and more dangerous to reach.

Following walks and runs, you can check over your pet to ensure no bristles are stuck to their fur. Brush your dog looking closely for foxtail awns. Check their face, ears, mouth and gums and remove them before they have a chance to embed themselves within the skin. Regular grooming can help make spotting the foxtails easier. Check your dog’s paw pads for foxtails especially between the toes, and if they are easy to get to, use a tweezers to remove them. If they are too deeply embedded, and the area is red and swollen, call your veterinarian immediately. The majority of incidents involving pets and foxtails occur in July and August with a few cases in September and October.

If you see an area that is full of foxtails, it is best to keep your furry loved one away from it. If you have fox tails within your yard, try to maintain them the best you can, even if you do not own a pet, as the seeds can detach and travel long distances.

There are an abundance of foxtails in the province; abandoned lots, fence lines, parks, and backyards, making it impossible to prevent all cases. However, recognizing the signs so that you can catch and treat cases early, will lead to a quicker and more complete recovery for your pet.

Annual 3 on 3 Hockey Tournament Sells Out in Record Time Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) has been a driving force within our community when it comes to hosting numerous successful events throughout the year. Despite COVID-19 forcing them to make some modifications to one of their most popular events – the 3 on 3 hockey tournament – they saw the event sell out in record time this year.

The 3 on 3 hockey tournament will be taking place over a three week period from August 30th to September 20th at the Martensville Sports Centre.

Each player is guaranteed seven games and will be sent home with a souvenir T-shirt. Divisions will include Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Bantam and 15+.

“We definitely had to make some adjustments to deal with COVID-19, which include limiting the amount of people that can come in and watch, as well as creating bubbles within the divisions to limit the amount of contact for those participating. The good news is, our group was ready and willing to do those things and we are exciting to be bringing the 3 on 3 tournament back to Martensville,” MCRP Chairperson, Jesse Reis said.

With the required changes in place, the tournament has grown in divisions, and Reis stated that this will be the largest event yet, serving over 400 kids.

“That number may seem big, but each bubble that

we created is limited to approximately 50 kids that will play against each other and be in contact with each other. We wanted to make sure first and foremost, that our players and coaches were safe. We made the adjustments and have it set up where we can ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

Reis added that the tournament, which sold out prior to July, is an opportunity for kids to get out and play some hockey and to prepare for the regular hockey season.

Funds raised from this event will be used toward the construction of a new multipurpose recreation facility in Martensville.

A location for the recreational facility was announced on Wednesday, August 19th and more information about this can be found on page 4.

Help Keep Our City Clean, a Reminder in Respect to Boulevard and Lane Maintenance

Residents and Customers are requested to carry out transactions electronically such as online banking, preauthorized payments or TIPPS. Cheques may also be dropped off in the drop slot at City Hall.

After Hour Water and Sewer Emergencies - should still be directed through the Emergency line at City Hall, (306) 931-2166, ext.1.

Protective Services - There are no changes in duty or status to Protective Services such as the RCMP, Martensville Fire Department, and Ambulance Service.

Water and Sewer - These services remain unimpacted and unchanged, including water quality testing. Meter reading will continue to take place under the Read/Estimate schedule; however, staff will not be doing reads of meters located inside of homes or occupied buildings. In these cases, estimates will be taken or reads can be provided into City Hall. In respect to water and sewer emergencies, city staff may not be able to enter resident homes at this time and private contractors should be considered.

Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule - Normally the Read/Estimate Schedule that takes place from October-April would be completed and the entire City would have water meter reads completed by City of Martensville Meter Readers. However due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Water Meter Read/Estimate schedule continues to be extended into foreseeable future Garbage and Recycling - Services remain in place and on schedule with no anticipated service delays at this time. Organics collection has also commenced.

Road Maintenance - will continue as required and is not expected to change at this time.

Playgrounds and Sports Fields - Playgrounds are currently open. The Spray Park is open.

Sports Fields have reopened but users should continue to follow activity guidelines as may be provided under the Provincial Re-Open plan.

Trails and passive park spaces remain open for use, but we continue to urge residents to incorporate safe practices.

Utility and Property Tax Updates - The City has implemented a number of measures to assist property owners and businesses during the pandemic, currently in place: • • • •

Official Location Announced For Martensville’s New Multi-Purpose Recreation Facility Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Six years ago a group of community members decided that they wanted to come together to help create the possibility of another much-needed ice surface in Martensville.

What has been accomplished since then is nothing short of incredible.

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) have held countless fundraisers over the years and gained a lot of ground when it comes to making this dream a reality. On Wednesday, August 19th, their goal moved one step closer towards the finish line when the location for the new multi-purpose recreational centre was announced.

The new addition to Martensville will be located across the overpass on the other side of Highway 12. This location will be a part of a new development planned for Martensville called Trilogy Ranch, a 680 acre subdivision, which will be created in partnership between North Prairie Developments (NPD) and Canwest Commercial and Land Corporation (CCLC). The land that will be used for the recreation centre consists of five acres gifted to the City of Martensville.

“I think the nice thing about this location is that it is accessible not just for Martensville, who really needs it, but for the people in the surrounding areas as well. To have a facility of that stature out there once it is fully completed will serve not just our community, but our province as a whole,” MCRP Chairperson Jesse Reis said.

For the MCRP, this was a huge step, as they were a big part of getting the wheels in motion with community support. “This project has been a collective effort from so many people; the City of Martensville, Council, businesses, community members, and everyone that supports our events. It is huge in a couple ways for us because it brings us one step closer to the ultimate goal and we can see the reality of it, but also, as we go out to get support from businesses and community members, there is something tangible that they can see now. I think that will be huge for us going forward,” Reis added.

Since 2014, the MCRP has raised over $350,000 that will all be used towards the construction of the new recreation facility. Reis said, “All of the events that we have held push for a larger goal of the rink, but coming together as a community is what I am most proud of and now that we are one step closer, it is that much more exciting. The more opportunities that we have for people coming out here; the better it is for business, for growth and it just makes this great place even greater.”

Investing in Martensville is not a new thing for North Prairie Developments (NPD), as they have been a big part of Martensville’s development for over 20 years, contributing to some of the major areas within the city such as Black Iron Crossing, McCormack Ranch, Sunset Ridge and others. According to John Williams, President of NPD and President/ CEO of CCLC, when they first began developing in Martensville, the population was only 3,500, a far cry from the approximate 10,000 plus that it currently sits at.

Trilogy Ranch has been in the works for the past seven years, and is now ready to move to the next level. “The City of Martensville was looking for a site for the recreation centre and recreation mixes really well with retail. We have 83 acres of retail land in that subdivision so it will be a great mix and work very well for everyone,” Williams said. The space that is being donated to the City of Martensville will take into account for all phases of the new recreational facility; planning for the future additions that will be taking place, as well as parking.

The new subdivision will include the 80 acres set aside for retail and recreation, along with 600 acres for residential, which in time, will house over 10,000 people. Although there are still a number of approvals that are required before their development begins, Williams is excited that Martensville will be moving forward with the recreation facility.

Additionally, Williams looks forward to the economic input that this development will have for the region. “We are looking at about a billion and a half dollars of economic input, not to mention that there will be approximately 500 new jobs for the retail and hospitality sector over the long term. In the spirit of P4G and regional cooperation in the area, the economic spinoff will be very significant,” Williams added.

Martensville Mayor Kent Muench acknowledged the contribution of the MCRP and their years of dedication to this project. “I don’t know if they realized when they picked the name ‘Martensville Community Recreation Project”, that this really is a community

project and needed so many people to make this happen. This is a game changing opportunity to bolster amateur sport and further Martensville’s vision moving forward,” Muench said.

Muench added that without this donation of land from NPD and CLDC, they would not be where they are today with this project, noting that this is the largest gift that the community has ever received. “This goes to show that they are in for the long term.

They don’t have to give this to the community, but by their incredible donation, it shows that this is going to be a great neighborhood and that they are looking at helping to create a Martensville that is not just bigger, but definitely better and I think that is something residents of current Martensville can find comforting,” Muench stated.

The demands on the current sports centre are something that many local families are familiar with, so this new addition to the community will be a much needed relief to the sports organizations within the area. “This is not just a Martensville thing. Having that location central for the region, providing great access, plus the plan for the neighborhood being a large area, with commercial space around it; it becomes a great regional draw,” Muench said. “It is a great feeling that we have accomplished this. We are just little Martensville, but having all of these people come together to create something so amazing, that’s the thing I am most proud of.”

Local Doctor Receives Award Through Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Wheatland Regional Library Provides Perfect Trees For SK Online Workshop

In November of 2014, Martensville Collective Health and Wellness opened its doors up to the community and since then, has been a staple within the city providing care to local residents, as well as those from surrounding areas.

Recently Dr. Allison Adamus was awarded the ‘My Family Doc Rocks’ award from the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians (SCFP) after a patient submitted a nomination. On the SCFP website, the state that a family doctor-patient relationship is often times the most trusted in health care. “It is a relationship that both the doctor and patient have been nurturing since a patient’s first visit and often the patients first encounter with the health care system. We know patients count on family doctors and value these relationships.” They also add that a patient’s family physician often acts as the central hub for managing your health and provide a higher level of continuity of care.

Since opening her practice in Martensville, Dr. Adamus has spent much time advocating for increased health services in the community and has brought additional doctors and health care options to the city.

Recently, Dr. Adamus took on the role of Area Division Lead with the Saskatchewan Health Authority for the Saskatoon North Network. “She has been getting to know more about the services and physicians that make up this network.

Although this work has primarily been focused on pandemic planning to date, she is excited to start diving deeper into the network, working with and further developing the health care team to serve her area,” the SCFP website states.

With many of our usual activities still impacted

by COVID-19, the Wheatland Regional Library has been looking for unique ways to provide information and activities to the public. The most recent opportunity is an online workshop called – Perfect Trees for SK, which is presented by Communities in Bloom.

This online workshop will take place Tuesday, August 25 online via Zoom from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and the deadline to register is Friday, August 21st.

This is for anyone thinking of planting trees this fall, or next spring and participation will be limited to 25.

Wheatland Regional Library residents will be given priority.

Trees can provide us with fruit, they can also protect against wind and erosions, and help conserve moisture. Our extreme cold, heat, insects, drought, and winds all pose a challenge to trees but they are an important part of our communities, gardens and farms.

Decency in Politics Begins With Us

There is likely no question I get asked more often than this one: What ever happened to decency in politics? If nothing else, some four decades of close contact with a lot of politicians offers a fair bit of perspective on this matter.

My assessment? The current politicians are pretty good. Certainly, they’re no worse than what we’ve had in the past. One might even argue there’s been no time in recent political history when we have seen so many of our political leaders rise to the occasion.

Of course, many will take umbrage with this.

They will point to the shuttered economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and certainly bring up the WE scandal in Ottawa that was, unquestionably, a ridiculous blunder that should not be tolerated by taxpayers.

Or; depending on their political persuasion; they might point to the Saskatchewan Party government’s bungled school re-opening policy. This appears to be a case of not providing the leadership required, dumping the tough divisions on local school divisions with limited resources and little authority.

Clearly, mistakes are also a reality. Given that it’s our tax dollars that have to pay to fix these mistakes; we surely have the right to complain and criticize. But it’s how some of us react to these mistakes made by politicians - or even things that politicians do that aren’t really mistakes that speaks to the real problem of decency.

The first problem with some in the public is a complete and total loss of perspective. There are always reasons to criticize politicians, but the outrage we are seeing from some is completely disproportional.

Heck, the WE scandal isn’t even the worst we have seen from federal Liberals when compared with the Sponsorship scandal that cost much more and rightly ousted the Liberals from power for a decade.

In this province, we have seen a government caucus set up a secret scheme to convert communication expense allowances into cash that was handed over to MLAs - a scheme that resulted in 20 convictions of Progressive Conservative MLAs and staff.

But if social meeting posting or the unhinged rants from supposed professional media personalities were to be believed, you’d think we now have the most corrupt politicians ever. To make matters worse, some people see biased social media or thinly veiled partisans in the mainstream media as their only source of information. This lack of objective news sources only irresponsibility feed the outrage against politicians with whom they don’t generally agree. It is here where lines are being crossed.

Indecency isn’t the reasonable and criticism of government policy. It is now and has been vile and potentially dangerous behaviour and; sadly - we may be seeing more of that.

Recently, Regina police charged a man with leaving threatening voicemails against Moe last week.

Whatever you thing of Moe as a person (and, frankly, he seems a rather decent one) he clearly doesn’t deserve this; but the sad reality is Moe is not the only politician to be victimized by this abuse. A favour target in federal politics is federal Infrastructure and Communities Minister Catherine McKenna who has been the frequent target of abuse.

Most recently, the Ottawa police hate crimes unit is investigating after a man screamed obscenities outside her constituency office. That the man felt the need to post his 90 seconds of vile outrage on social media says much.

Then there are the charges against Manitoban Corey Hurren, who rammed his truck through the gates of Rideau Hall while allegedly carrying a four loaded firearm and uttering threats against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

It’s indecency now in the realm of madness and far and away greater problem right now seems to be some people rather than the politicians themselves.

Safe Schools Plan: More Resources, More Information, More Time And More Testing

Today, the government announced it will be providing more resources, more information, more time and more testing to ensure a safe return to school.

“Over the past few weeks, our government has been listening to concerns about our students returning to school while we are still managing our way through the COVID-19 pandemic,” Premier Scott Moe said. “Today, we are acting by providing more information, more time, more testing and more resources to ensure a safe return to school in September.”

More Resources

The province will allocate $40 million from the $200 million provincial COVID-19 contingency fund for additional costs related to ensuring the safety of students and staff through the pandemic. The $40 million in new funding for education will be allocated as follows: • $20 million will be available to school divisions on an application basis for pandemic-related costs including staffing and sanitation supplies; • $10 million will be available to enhance non-classroom options like distance learning to help ensure immunocompromised and medically fragile students have continuous access to learning across school divisions, available on an application basis; and • $10 million will be allocated to the Ministry of Education to centrally procure masks, PPE and other supplies for school divisions.

This $40 million in additional funding will match and complement the $40 million school divisions realized in savings, making a total of $80 million available to school divisions for a safe return to school. The application process will be communicated with all school divisions on Tuesday, August 18.

More Information

In order to provide parents and students with information about what a return to individual schools will look like, school-specific operation plans are currently being finalized and will be posted online and communicated to parents and students no later than August 26.

School divisions have been working within the provincial guidelines and public health guidance provided through the Safe Schools Plan to implement initiatives like block scheduling, cohorting, and considerations for alternating school days. Under the new funding made available to divisions, additional staff to reduce class sizes in exceptional circumstances will be considered.

School divisions are currently preparing plans for submission to the Ministry of Education this week for considerations of altering operations of high density schools, primarily in collegiate settings, under Level 3 of the Safe Schools Plan.

More Time

Students will now be rescheduled to return to class on the Tuesday after Labour Day, September 8. Students were set to return to class between September 1 and 3.

This extra time will provide teachers and staff two to four additional days to be in the schools to get training on the new protocols, properly reconfigure classrooms, and where possible hold virtual meetings with parents to discuss the new school procedures.

The terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement currently held with the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation will be honoured. Instructional hours will not be extended, meaning depending on the school division, there will be two to four fewer instructional days this school year.

More Testing

The province is working toward daily testing capacity of 4,000 tests by the beginning of September, and will continue to offer universal testing for anyone who wants to be tested. Regina and Saskatoon will also introduce drivethrough testing sites which will require only a health card, not a referral.

All teachers and school staff are being encouraged to seek testing prior to returning to school and at frequent points throughout the school year. Priority access to testing will be established for teachers and school staff in the coming days, with referrals available through 811.

Targeted school testing is a key focus of the expanded testing plans, with plans including targeted monitoring, testing of students with parental consent, and priority testing for teachers and school staff. Participating schools will be selected based on a number of factors, such as number of students in the school and if the community is experiencing a recent surge of new cases. In school public health visits for routine childhood vaccinations will now include COVID-19 testing, where parental consent is granted.

As part of the August 26 school specific plans, parents will be provided with detailed information that includes instructions about what to do if a child tests positive, and what a classroom and school would do to follow up and protect others.

Local Author Celebrates Turning 60 With a Year of New Experiences Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Local author Dianne Young states that she has never been the type of person that is interested in becoming the absolute best at one thing; but instead trying 100 different things and being mediocre at them all. It is this kind of thinking that inspired Young’s newest book “60 THINGS: A Year To Remember”.

In order to celebrate turning 60, Young wanted to do something unique. “When I started thinking about turning 60, I knew I wanted to do something special because it seemed like I should, but I couldn’t decide on what to do. From there, I got the idea of doing 60 things.

It was only five things a month and I knew they didn’t have to all be big expensive things, just things that I had never done before. I am so glad I did it because I had such a great year,” said Young.

Some of the items on the list were thought of by Young herself, others were suggested by friends, and some were spur of the moment decisions. “Shaving my head was the first thing I did. I had always wanted to do it and thought I would start things off with a bang. There are definitely some things that I plan to continue with, like taking harp lessons and learning to speak German.”

Although some of the things she chose were terrifying; such as the tandem parachute jump and going to the nudist camp; Young has no regrets. “When opportunity knocks, put a robe on and answer the door! Try stuff that you have never done before and don’t limit yourself. For me, the nudist camp was the one I was most nervous about, but it was awesome. I was going to go back again this year, but because of COVID, I had to cancel.”

This book marks the eighth book that Young has had published; however, it is the first one that she self-published.
